- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter one. How it happened that Mastro Cherry carpenter found
- 0:06Speaker 1: a piece of wood that wept and laughed like a child.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Centuries ago there lived a king. My little readers will
- 0:14Speaker 1: say immediately, no, children, you are mistaken. Once upon a
- 0:19Speaker 1: time there was a piece of wood. It was not
- 0:22Speaker 1: an expensive piece of wood, far from it, just a
- 0:27Speaker 1: common block of firewood, one of those thick, solid logs
- 0:31Speaker 1: that are put on the fire in the winter to
- 0:34Speaker 1: make cold rooms cozy and warm. I do not know
- 0:38Speaker 1: how this really happened, yet the fact remains that one
- 0:42Speaker 1: fine day this piece of wood found itself in the
- 0:45Speaker 1: shop of an old carpenter. His name was Mastro Antonio,
- 0:50Speaker 1: but everybody called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of
- 0:54Speaker 1: his nose was so round and red and shiny that
- 0:58Speaker 1: it looked like a ripe cherry. As soon as he
- 1:01Speaker 1: saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Rubbing his hands together happily, he mumbled half to himself,
- 1:10Speaker 1: this has come in the nick of time. I shall
- 1:13Speaker 1: use it to make the leg of a table. He
- 1:16Speaker 1: grasped the hatchet quickly to peel off the bark and
- 1:19Speaker 1: shape the wood. But as he was about to give
- 1:23Speaker 1: it the first blow. He stood still with arm uplifted,
- 1:27Speaker 1: for he had heard a wee little voice say, in
- 1:30Speaker 1: a beseeching tone, please be careful, do not hit me
- 1:35Speaker 1: so hard. With a look of surprise shone on Mastro
- 1:39Speaker 1: Cherry's face, his funny face became funnier still. He turned
- 1:45Speaker 1: frightened eyes about the room to find out where that
- 1:48Speaker 1: wee little voice had come from, And he saw no one.
- 1:53Speaker 1: He looked under the bench, no one. He peeped inside
- 1:57Speaker 1: the closet, no one. He sir among the shavings, no one.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He opened the door to look up and down the street,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and still no one. Oh, I see, he said, laughing
- 2:10Speaker 1: and scratching his wig. It can easily be seen that
- 2:13Speaker 1: I only thought I heard the tiny voice say the words, well,
- 2:18Speaker 1: well to work. Once more, he struck a most solemn
- 2:21Speaker 1: blow upon the piece of wood. Oh oh, you hurt,
- 2:25Speaker 1: cried the same far away little voice. Mastro Cherry groomed dumb,
- 2:31Speaker 1: his eyes popped out of his head, his mouth wide open,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and his tongue hung down on his chin. As soon
- 2:39Speaker 1: as he regained the use of his senses, he said,
- 2:42Speaker 1: trembling and stuttering from fright where did that voice come
- 2:47Speaker 1: from when there is no one around? Might it be
- 2:50Speaker 1: that this piece of wood has learned to weep and
- 2:53Speaker 1: cry like a child? I can hardly believe it. Here
- 2:57Speaker 1: it is a piece of common fire, good only to
- 3:01Speaker 1: burn in the stove, the same as any other. Yet
- 3:05Speaker 1: might someone be hidden in it? If so, the worse
- 3:09Speaker 1: for him. I'll fix him with these words. He grabbed
- 3:13Speaker 1: the log with both hands and started to knock it
- 3:16Speaker 1: about unmercifully. He threw it to the floor, against the
- 3:21Speaker 1: walls of the room, and even up to the ceiling.
- 3:24Speaker 1: He listened for the tiny voice to moan and cry.
- 3:28Speaker 1: He waited two minutes nothing, five minutes nothing, ten minutes nothing.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Oh I see, he said, trying bravely to laugh and
- 3:39Speaker 1: ruffling up his wig with his hand. It can easily
- 3:42Speaker 1: be seen. I only imagined I heard the tiny voice. Well, well,
- 3:47Speaker 1: to work once more. The poor fellow was scared half
- 3:50Speaker 1: to death, so he tried to sing a gay song
- 3:53Speaker 1: in order to gain courage. He set aside the hatchet
- 3:57Speaker 1: and picked up the plane to make the wood smooth
- 4:00Speaker 1: and even. But as he drew it to and fro,
- 4:03Speaker 1: he heard the same tiny voice. This time it giggled
- 4:07Speaker 1: as it spoke. Ha ha, stop it, stop it, ha ha.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You tickle my stomach this time, poor mastro Cherry fell
- 4:17Speaker 1: as if shot. When he opened his eyes, he found
- 4:20Speaker 1: himself sitting on the floor. His face had changed fright,
- 4:25Speaker 1: had turned even the tip of his nose from red
- 4:28Speaker 1: to deepest purple. End of Chapter one.
