- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the table at a dance competition?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Exactly what are the judges looking for anyway?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: This is Making the Impact, a dance competition podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Each week we'll cover a different topic related to the world of competitive dance from the perspective of the judges behind the table.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Hello listeners and welcome to our season 4 wrap-up episode.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness, I am so sad it is here and the season is over already.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Of course, this is Courtney Ortiz.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: I'm your host of Making Impact, and like always, I'm here with my wonderful, fabulous co-host who I couldn't do this without Leslie Miller.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Courtney, we have made it.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I know, it just always feels like it flies by.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Like while it's happening, it's just, you know, we plot along, we have the guests, we have the topics, we, you know, make it all happen, and then by the time it's over, it's like, well, where did it all go?
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: It goes by so, so, so fast, and it's been such a great season.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I've had such a uh lovely time of recording with you.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: And I know we've been like from a distance for most of the season recording this time around.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: From a distance.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We have been at a distance, but you know, technology allows us to be close even when we're far away.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And we've met some amazing guests this season.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I'm so happy with all of the people who have come on and contributed to this podcast.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I just couldn't be more grateful for everybody sharing their experiences and their insight into this competition world.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: It's so awesome that we have so many supporters and people wanting to contribute to our podcast.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: So shout out to every guest who has joined us, IDA judges, and a lot of new guests, a lot of really fantastic professionals and leaders in the industry have joined us on our studio spotlights, on our spotlight features, on some of our hottest episodes and topics ever.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: We are so grateful for all of you, and this podcast wouldn't be possible without our guests joining us in these roundtable chats.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So thank you all so much.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's been such a great season, and uh we are sad that it's over, but we have season five coming your way, y'all.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Uh after our summer hiatus, which speaking of our summer, Leslie, what do you have going on this summer?
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: I know that uh it's gonna be a busy one for you, it sounds like it's gonna be so busy.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: I can't stand it.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And of course, currently, while we are recording this wrap-up episode, I'm sick because my body was like, it's it's done.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: The season's done.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: You can you can be sick now, but I really can't, body, because I have things happening.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So, firstly, I am moving from Queens, New York, where I have lived for 14 years.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Moving to Montclair, New Jersey with my boyfriend.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So super stoked about that.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's a lovely suburban, idyllic town, like where I have seen myself living in my in my dreams.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So I'm super excited to move there.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And Queens will miss you so Queens will.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, listen, I'll miss Queens.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: It was it was a very good 14 years.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Very sad to leave my apartment here.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And, you know, but uh as New Yorkers do and as performers do, we move, you know, and I've been very lucky to stay in one place for so long.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: But, you know, all of my friends are scattered around the country, so I will just be scattered across two more rivers over there.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So that's one exciting thing.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: But the other exciting thing is in June, I am officially part of the New York City Dance Alliance family.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Yay! Yay! I'm gonna be the assistant general manager for NYCDA.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I will go out on a few weekends as director for um for some of their conventions.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So I'm super stoked to be a part of that legacy.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And, you know, if we have we have a lot of listeners who attend NYCDA.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And as you as you know, if you attend, they are just a leader in the convention industry and a legacy in the dance industry overall.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm really, really excited for this opportunity.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And it will also allow me to continue to, you know, do the podcast and bring another perspective um to the table for this as well.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So I'm I really can't wait to get started with them.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, Leslie, I am so excited for you.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I'm so proud of you.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: This is such a huge big step in your career.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And I just it couldn't have gone to a more deserving, hardworking person.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: I truly told you, like when you got the interview, I could just feel that this was going to happen for you.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And you've put so much work into, you know, being who you are in the industry, and you've really earned this.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I truly believe that they couldn't have picked a better person.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So I'm so proud.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And and dear listener, Courtney is a friend you should always have in your corner.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I hope everybody has a Courtney because Courtney is always looking out for me, and she is the reason I have this job because she sent me the posting.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Courtney was like, You need to apply for this.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: You would be good at this.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And she does this for me all the time.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm usually like, Thank you.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And I just I send it away and I'm like, cool, I'm I'm good.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stay in my like comfort zone.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: But this time, this time I applied and it paid off.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: So thank you for thank you for that and for your kind words.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And and yeah, I'm really, I'm really excited.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna be a really cool new experience, new chapter.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And one of my one of the things that I learned in college, the motto is good luck is preparation meeting opportunity.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't just fall into your lap.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: You have to be prepared, you have to be in the right place at the right time, and that is good luck.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So I think all of those things combined for me in this in this thing.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: So that's why I'm gonna be busy.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Because so I'll see some of you at NYCDA Nationals uh in July, because I will be there.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So say hello if you see me.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, I love that.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, everyone, be sure to be on the lookout for Leslie at NYCDA.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And I selfishly am sad you're leaving New York City and uh selfishly sad that you have a full-time job now because that means I don't get to see you as often.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Or obviously, to all of our listeners out there, Leslie is not going anywhere on the podcast.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: She is going to make it work and still we're gonna figure out our schedule.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be shifting around when we record to make sure that she is always right by my side as much as possible into season five and beyond for the podcast.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: So, yes, I'm sad that I won't get to see you as often, but she'll be right over the rope.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: She'll be right over there, and you'll come to Montclair.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: It's cute there.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Y'all should all come to Montclair.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I hear it's cute.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to visit.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm so, I'm so thrilled for you.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: And yes, it sounds like you're gonna have a busy summer moving and jumping into a new position and role.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: So congrats on that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: For my summer, my summer's always crazy.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: I always prioritize summer teaching and traveling, guest teaching and doing guest choreography at studios around the country in the summer.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And but I'm changing things up this summer.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I'm actually really excited because I'm getting back on the stage for the first time since the pandemic.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Huge.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I can't say what that is yet because I do not know, based on the the air date of this recording, if the announcement has been officially made into the Broadway world, but uh but I am very, very excited and honored for the opportunity to be hitting the stage again.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: And uh I'll give a little like insider tip.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: It's a show that I've done a million times.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: It's been with me my entire career, and it'll also be my first opportunity that I will be swinging a show, and I'm extremely nervous about that.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're gonna have to do a swing episode.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: So that but you'll have your first experience this summer.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: We'll bring on some veteran swings next season to talk about what that experience is like because I mean I've only ever swung a Looney Tunes show where I was Daffy, Tweety, and Taz every other day.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So it's not gonna be the same as that, I don't think.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I I mean it hey, you know, I think it swinging in general, I think is going to be like, you know, a similar experience for money because you have to know so much in your head.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: I literally, when I got the job, I immediately was saying in my head, I wish there was a we've done a swing episode so I could go listen to all the tips and tricks so I could walk into this job better prepared.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: But I definitely think after my experience this summer that I'm prioritizing that in a season five episode.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And I already know the perfect person that I'm going to have on the episode, one of my the fiercest swings on Broadway.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: So yes, that is uh what my summer is looking like, and that's only for a very short period of my summer, and then after that, I'm hitting the ground running and then going back into the teaching and traveling and all of that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So I can't wait.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a very busy summer, but I'm so, so, so grateful for the opportunities and I'm really thrilled to get back on stage.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's gonna be that's gonna be epic.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited for you, and yeah, it's it's the it's the right show to do that with, I think.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I know I just can't tell y'all.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: We have secrets over here.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Secrets, but and when I'm allowed to announce it, I'll let y'all know.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: All right, stay tuned.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: But what's not a secret is some of our cool stuff coming up for season five.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: So, what is not a secret is we want to share our making the impact winners from the final events of this season.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: We have a bunch more to talk about.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, and I'm sure you've heard us all season long with our Making the Impact winners that is selected by your IDA judges at an IDA affiliated competition event.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And this goes to that one dance that the judges cannot stop thinking about by the end of the weekend.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: It can be awarded to a solo through production, any age or level dance.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And this is a dance that maybe had amazing technique or beautiful execution, awesome performance or fantastic choreography.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Whatever it is, the judges wanted to recognize it at the event with a physical award.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: And one of the perks is getting a shout-out live on the podcast.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna kick things off with our final Making the Impact Award winners from this competition season.

- 11:18SPEAKER_01: We are so excited to be able to give this award out, sponsored by the podcast, and they will be continuing on at IDA affiliated competitions into the 2024 season.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: So be on the lookout.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: And also stay tuned for a fun announcement towards the end of this episode for all of our Making the Impact Award winners.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: It's been a big season.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Like we said, season four was a hit.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: We have so many uh new listeners that have discovered our podcast throughout the season that we want to share some of our stats.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: But some of the things that we did add into the season uh that was new for season four, the first thing was our platinum premium subscription.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't joined our platinum premium, we would love for you to join us there for only$5 a month, or you can join for yearly access.

- 12:12SPEAKER_01: And our Platinum Premium members get exclusive access to have their questions answered as a priority on each episode.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: So it's been a huge hit.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: We love doing our QA's live.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: We I always have an IDA judge joining me on that chat to help answer questions.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: And all of we have over 70 subscribers that are helping support our podcast in Platinum Premium subscription, which we are so grateful for.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: And I actually want to give a shout out to one of our most recent Platinum Premium members who wanted a shout-out live on the air.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: So shout out to Heather Miller, a dance mom from Elite Fine Arts Academy in Murdoch, Florida.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for your support and being a platinum premium subscriber.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: We are definitely going to be doing more perks into season five of Platinum Premium subscription.

- 13:08SPEAKER_00: We love to talk about stats here on Making the Impact.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: And really, I don't know, it feels like math to me, but at the same time, I just like to know.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: I like to know that people like us.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: And stats help people and figure that out.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: People love us.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And just in season four alone, we've had over a hundred and fifty thousand listeners.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Wowza.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Just this season.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Remember when we were in a magazine?
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Like that's crazy.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's so crazy.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: I can't believe it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: It's framed on my wall.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I'm so proud of it.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: It's just such an awesome achievement.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And but I, you know, you kind of wonder like, did that I don't know that the magazine, you know, God bless the magazine.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: We are grateful to be in Podcast Magazine, but I don't know that that propelled us into 150,000 listens because who's getting Podcast Magazine besides podcasters?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: However, I think what it has propelled us into 150,000 listens and our total downloads since we launched in season one is over 350,000.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: And I think what has done it is word of mouth.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, and our Facebook group.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Honestly, every time somebody tags IDA or making the impact on Facebook in anything, especially in other forums.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I've noticed that when someone tags IDA or the or the Facebook group in a dance teacher forum or a studio owner forum or a dance mom forum, next thing you know, we have like a hundred requests to join our podcast group on Facebook.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: And a lot of those people, when they're answering the question, say, I didn't even know about this podcast.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to start listening.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: So I, like you said, word of mouth.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you to everyone who has been inviting members into the podcast group who have been sharing our podcast on social media with others to listen.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: That is really how we get the word out.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And we are so grateful for everyone's support and tuning in week after week and subscribing to the pod.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: We have officially hit over 100 episodes.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: We had 42 episodes this season, plus nine special uh platinum premium episodes for members only.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And this coming season, we're gonna have 40 more episodes.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: We're not we're not stopping.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: We're we're keeping this going alive.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, we started this in 2019 before the pandemic.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And we really didn't know like what was gonna turn out, what what was gonna come out of this podcast, you know?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: And like we we powered through during the pandemic, which honestly grateful for the pod because it gave us something to do during the pandemic.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I'm gonna just like pat ourselves on the back for a split second because I feel like there's a lot of pod people that start podcasts and then they just peter out.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: They have a few, yeah, they just disappear.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Like they're so excited, they advertise, they do a few episodes, and then I think they really see like how hard it is to make a podcast possible and how consistent you have to be.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: We have been so consistent, we've been very clear when we're taking a hiatus, right?
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Every we always launch exactly when we're supposed to.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: I think that's what really makes a successful podcast.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: And then also having really hot topics that we talk about here on the pod that draws people in.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Well, and making sure that we're listening to our listeners because we don't we don't do this for us.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Courtney and I could sit here and talk all day just between the two of us.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: We really could, and we do like our off time, we're talking about this kind of stuff too.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: But we're doing this for people who want to know more and want the information.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: And but but we want to know what you want to know.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: We don't know what you want to know.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: You have to tell us, and people have.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: And that's you know, we've listened.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, we've delivered.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, in season five, you know, we're bringing you more things that you want to know about.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: So when you when you listen to this wrap-up episode, start thinking in your brain, well, what what what do I want to know for next season?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Because season five launches in September.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: We need season five launches in September, and we want to know what episodes you want to hear on the podcast.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So if you have topics that you want to hear tackled in season five, then shoot us a message during our summer hiatus and let us know because we're gonna probably mapping, be mapping out our uh full season schedule in August.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So you have two months to prep and prepare and send those topic requests our way.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, and maybe one of those topics will turn out to be the most listened to episode ever, because we have a few of those that we want to share with you.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Yes, in season four, the most listened to episode of season four was episode 127, Competition Trends: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Everyone loved that one.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Loved it.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: I think that one was one of the ones that got shared a lot, like among studios and among moms and dad, you know, parents and everything, because it really came directly from the judges.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: You know, that's that's what we started out doing was feedback from the judges, you know, to your ears.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And that's that's one of the things we specialize in.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: That's why people tune into our podcast.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: So and I love talking about competition trends because they're gonna change, right?
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: They're always gonna change throughout the years.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: The competition trends that we would have talked about in season one would have been a completely different episode if we had that trends episode in season one to our trends episode in season four.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: So I think that we're going to do these types of episodes every season now because y'all love them so much.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And if you haven't had a chance to listen to our 2023 wrap-up episode that just launched last week, I would highly encourage you to listen to that because there's a lot of great takeaways from our judges from the competition season this year.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And we also want to let you guys know our top three most listened to episodes of all time.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Man, I'm not surprised about any of these.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Uh the the number three most listened to episode of all time is from season three.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: It's episode 87, Stage Presence, Why Performance Matters.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Number two most listened to episode of all time, season three, episode 100.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: The top 10 studio habits judges see at competition.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: And drum roll, please.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Brrrrrrr.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: The number one most listened to episode ever.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Season one, episode four, lyrical versus contemporary.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Ooh, everyone, that's a hit, y'all.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: I will say that ep uh our most listened to number two and three are not far behind that episode.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: So uh who knows what will happen by season five to be the most listened to episode of all time, but that's still winning.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And it's been around for the longest.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: So that's probably why as well.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Episode four.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, we were just like that that was recorded in August, probably of 2019.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And we knew we had to give y'all like the hottest topic ever right off, right off the bat, because we wanted to draw you in.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: We hooked them.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Listen, there's a method to our madness, and this is it.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: We knew what we knew what the people needed.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And it's clear, obviously, like, you know, people are still asking the question weekly, monthly, daily what what is this lyrical?
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Is it contemporary?
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Where should I put this?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: We'll listen to that episode and we'll tell you.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, please do.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Please listen before next season, y'all.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: I promise.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Because there's so many times I still to this day as a judge say this is not lyrical, this is not contemporary.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Please know the difference.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: You'll learn so much from that episode.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: And we've even been hinting at maybe doing another one just to kind of like get more off our chest about it.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: I I would love to and get some more, you know, some more perspectives from different judges.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So yeah, stay tuned, folks.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: All right, Leslie, what was your favorite episode of season four?
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Courtney, I looked back at my podcast up and I just kept marveling at all the topics that we did and all the guests that we had, and every everything was great.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I I really enjoyed this season.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I think my most, my most, most, most favorite was season this season, uh, episode 116, a look at competitive dance in other countries.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Because I the first of all, the magic that you did to get everybody on the same page and being able to be uh on the Zoom at the same time.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: We had uh Peter Oxford, a guest from Australia, and Jacob Dvorak from the Czech Republic.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And so we're talking about multiple time zones.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: You know, it's a day, it's a different day in Australia.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: It was nuts the fact that we got it all together and just hearing from two vastly different experiences of competitive dance, I thought was just really cool, really informative, and one of the most unique episodes we've ever done.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was definitely tough to make it possible.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: And even me just reaching out to random people in the industry that I don't know across all the whole world, saying, Hey, do you want to be on a podcast?
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Not a lot of people responded.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but uh when I did reach out to Jacob, he said, Absolutely, I'm thrilled.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: I can't believe you discovered our studio, which was thanks to you from finding them on Instagram.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: And then uh Peter Oxford in Australia, it was actually the only Australian competition that responded when I reached out.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: So, and I'm so grateful that he was the one that did because he's been around for so long and it was and he was such a fantastic guest.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: So I loved that episode as well.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm really I know that was one that you were really eager to do, and ever since we did.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Our virtual comp and we saw all the competition dance internationally out there.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: We were like, we gotta talk about this.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I thought it was amazing.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And then my second favorite, I mean, listen, I love them all.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: I love you all dearly.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Podcast episodes of the past.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: But I really enjoyed number 142, diehard dance dads.
- 22:16unknown: Yeah.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: The dance dads are.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And you know what is so cool is that recently I received an Instagram message of a judge, a non-IDA affiliated judge and non-IDA judge.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: They were at another event, but they had to message me because they recognized Kyle, the dance dad from our episode, who is based in Connecticut.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: This judge was judging in Connecticut and they saw Kyle coming out with props.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And like just like recognized him, I think, just from our clips and hearing his voice and everything and put it together.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And they were like, wait, I'm in Connecticut right now.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Wait, I think that's Kyle from the episode.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: So wow.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And I was like, can I please share that with Kyle?
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: And they were like, absolutely.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: But it was just so cool that they recognized him.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's amazing.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, listen, we talk about it all the time.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: The dance world is small, and you might even recognize a dance dad from a dance podcast.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just what we're doing for our industry.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: It just it's so beyond us just talking on this podcast.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Like that, I think that's that was just such a special moment.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure that uh that judge was like fan fangirling in the like sitting in the judge's chair, but then also like he's probably feeling like a superstar for his dancer, being recognized as a prop dad by randoms, you know?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: It's pretty cool.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: That is awesome.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, Courtney, your turn.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: What is your favorite episode of season four?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, I have two because I can't decide.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: And uh, like you said, every episode was fantastic.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: There are so many, so many great ones.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: These these feel very personal to me uh regarding the topic.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: So uh my favor one of my favorites was episode 135, Why Counting Your Music is Essential and Dance.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Because I learned so much listening to our guests on that episode.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And it was really cool to reach out to my college music theory professor at who I haven't talked to in like 10 years and who barely even knew me for one semester at Marymount and said, Hey, I'm doing this podcast.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Do you want to do it?
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: And they were like, Yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: So it was really cool to learn from both of our guests, Kaelin Gray and Damien, on that episode.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: And y'all know how much I love counting.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: And I think it was just a necessary episode and an eye-opening episode for so many to maybe start realizing, wow, listen to these people talk about counting.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I had no idea how important it really was.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Let me rethink how I'm approaching my teaching, let me rethink how I approach choreography.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Like I really hope that people walked away feeling that after listening.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Cause I know I did even more than I already did.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I definitely we got some feedback from it.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: And I think that was exactly the feeling was like, ooh, we need to do better.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And we can do better.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: It's like you just have to know, you know, you don't know what you don't know.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: And once you know it, you can't unknow it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Ding ding ding.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: So I think that was a great one.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: And my other favorite was episode 133 transitions, the most important part of a dance routine, because I do agree and believe that they are the most important part.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: I think that everyone is so confused as to why their score isn't high at competition.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: And it's probably due to either the the choreography lacking transitions or the dancer not understanding how to connect the transitional steps and execute the transitional steps properly.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: So our guests were so great.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: Maddie Kurtz is always a fan favorite.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: We had Jonathan McGill, both IDA judges who joined us on that episode.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: And it was just a wonderful discussion.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, from beginning to end, there was so much knowledge being spilled, and just again, another eye-opening chat for our industry.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Good job, season four.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Lots of great stuff in there.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: And you know, let us know your favorite episodes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: We want to hear from you if you're in the Facebook group.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: You know, shout us out.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Let us know, let us know what you liked and what what you want more of because we're here for you.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's tell all of our listeners about what's coming your way in season five and over the summer.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: As you may remember from last year, Leslie and I had the opportunity to bring Making the Impact live to two different events in the summer.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: We attended Spirit of Dance Awards Nationals last year and hosted a live QA, which also featured Sam Quinn and Rob Gibbs, who were our IDA judges, joining us on that chat.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: It was our very first live event ever, and it was really, really cool.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, we had um some really great people show up.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: We had dancers, dance dads, studio owners, teachers joining in and wanting to ask questions with us in person.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: We have we got had the opportunity to meet a lot of fans, and we recorded an episode live, which is like the dream.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: I hope we are able to do more of these.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: We did one at at Diva Dance Competitions National as well last year, which was also a hit.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: But sadly, because we already told you how busy our summer schedules are gonna be, we don't have any time this summer to do that.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: No, and you know what was sad is when we went to Diva, we had like a little tiny, tiny mini vacation, which was also really nice.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: But again, no time.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: There's no there's never any time, Jesse Spano.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: The moms will get that one.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: But anyway, we have some cool stuff happening.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Don't worry.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: We are probably gonna do a fun summer bonus episode.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: And we have a new Making the Impact contest coming up.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I want to briefly tell you about this.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: It's coming and soon and launching this month in June.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: So, how this is gonna work, we're so we're we're so pumped about this.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: If you were the recipient of a Making the Impact Award at an IDA affiliated event this season, then we are going to put all of y'all into a voting contest.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: And the winner of this contest will receive a studio spotlight episode on the podcast in season five.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: How cool is that! So we've had a lot of people register, you're making the impact award.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't had a chance to register your register yours if you were a recipient, be sure to grab the award and scan the QR code on the back of the award.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: If you don't have access to the physical award and you want to register your award to be able to participate in this contest, shoot us an email and I will happily send you the link to register your award so you can be in the running.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: And how this will work is it'll happen on social media where all of the Making the Impact winners will be displayed on our social media accounts and all of our fans are able to vote for the winners.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: The voting will take place for roughly three days, and after that, we will narrow it down based on the amount of votes for each studio to total up to a top 10.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: And then on our end, we will then determine who our top winner is that will receive a studio shout-out and a studio studio spotlight episode on season five.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: So it's a really, really exciting new addition that we're adding to our Making the Impact Awards that we cannot wait to share with you all.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: So get uh get ready to start voting towards the end of this month.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to see who that winner is going to be.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And if you are a longtime listener, you know that we always hold a season cover art contest.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: So this will be our season five cover art contest in which you, the dancer, could be featured.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: So we do this every year.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: This is launching sometime in the summer.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: We can submit your best photo of your dancer to allow the fans and listeners to vote on who is going to grace the cover of our season five artwork.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: We had some beautiful, we've had beautiful dancers every year so far.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So we're looking forward to seeing even more of your beautiful pictures.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned for more information about how to submit for that.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, get those performance photos ready, those action shots ready to send our way.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: And yes, I can't wait to see what the season five cover is gonna look like.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And shout out to all of our past season cover art winners uh who have graced our cover.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: It's been a joy seeing those beautiful dancers week after week pop up on my podcast app.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: And that is pretty much a wrap of for this wrap-up episode of season four.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Season five is launching Thursday, September 7th, is the official launch day of season five of Making the Impact.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: It's hopefully the summer goes by quick because I'm already counting down the days, so we're back in action recording these podcasts together.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: It's it's gonna come at us like out of nowhere.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: So don't worry.
