- 0:22Speaker 1: us one day at the time, much problems to the side.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Is you yourself, free your mind Chicken it we ki keep.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to another episode of Kicking at Wikiki, Life,
- 0:44Speaker 1: love and all that of the ship. I am your host,
- 0:47Speaker 1: Kiki Chanel Award win it Off the lifestyle Blogger and
- 0:50Speaker 1: certified Mindset and Personal Growth Coach. Today we are talking
- 0:54Speaker 1: about something that is very important but we tend to overlook.
- 1:00Speaker 1: That is how to create a positive tone when it
- 1:05Speaker 1: comes to communication. The importance of having the correct tone
- 1:10Speaker 1: when when you're communicating with somebody is pivotal on how
- 1:15Speaker 1: it is received or reposed because the way that we
- 1:20Speaker 1: say things can be very off putting or it can
- 1:24Speaker 1: be purposeful in a positive way. Effective communication is a
- 1:29Speaker 1: cornerstone for building positive relationships personal, business, situational. You know,
- 1:38Speaker 1: every day encounters with strangers, social interaction on social media
- 1:44Speaker 1: is all about tone. And sometimes I'm not listen. I'm
- 1:48Speaker 1: gonna go ahead and let y'all know that I'm not
- 1:50Speaker 1: really big on telephones. I'm not I did that when
- 1:53Speaker 1: I was younger, stayed on the phone for hours and hours,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and I just ain't got that time. But when it
- 1:59Speaker 1: comes to deciphering or trying to decipher what someone is
- 2:03Speaker 1: saying through a text message, then yeah, we let's have
- 2:06Speaker 1: a conversation, because sometimes tone can be misinterpreted when it
- 2:12Speaker 1: comes to text messaging. I've done it several times, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm not proud to say that I got in my
- 2:20Speaker 1: feelings when I should have should not have, and may
- 2:25Speaker 1: other people feel a certain way when that was not
- 2:27Speaker 1: my intention. So one of the most critical elements of
- 2:33Speaker 1: communication is tone, the way our words are conveyed, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: I want to talk about seven different points to help
- 2:45Speaker 1: you create a positive tone when it comes to communication.
- 2:50Speaker 1: The first I want to talk about is enhancing clarity
- 2:53Speaker 1: and understanding. Be intentional about the message that's supposed to
- 2:58Speaker 1: be understood. People can't read minds, and neither can you.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So when you're communicating with somebody, I need I'm gonna
- 3:08Speaker 1: say not you, us, I need us when we are
- 3:11Speaker 1: trying to have a positive and purposeful conversation where each
- 3:17Speaker 1: party is heard. Because some people like to listen to
- 3:22Speaker 1: respond and not comprehend. So be intentional about the message
- 3:29Speaker 1: that is supposed to be understood. For example, if it's
- 3:33Speaker 1: time to have a serious conversation and you're being sarcastic
- 3:36Speaker 1: or you're being humorous about it, you may make the
- 3:39Speaker 1: other person who just needs to vent or talk or
- 3:43Speaker 1: be heard or whatever the case may be, feel depleted
- 3:49Speaker 1: or worse than what they came or like their voice
- 3:54Speaker 1: doesn't matter. So we don't want anyone to feel like
- 4:00Speaker 1: standing or misunderstood or taken for granted their joke to you,
- 4:05Speaker 1: so or us, we don't want anyone to feel like
- 4:08Speaker 1: that with us. So enhancing clarity and understanding is one
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the most important points when it comes to communication
- 4:17Speaker 1: with a positive tone, and that keeps us from having
- 4:22Speaker 1: to repeat ourselves from feelings frustrated, are feeling like the
- 4:30Speaker 1: conversation was a waste of time. Have you, guys, ever
- 4:33Speaker 1: had a conversation with someone and you feel drained afterwards
- 4:38Speaker 1: because you have fought tooth and nail to make them
- 4:43Speaker 1: understand your point of view and they were just so
- 4:46Speaker 1: closed off to it, and maybe because the intentions were
- 4:50Speaker 1: not set at the start of the conversation. I feel
- 4:54Speaker 1: like when we are at a place where we havehealed
- 4:59Speaker 1: ourselves enough personal trauma, childhood trauma and all the things
- 5:03Speaker 1: that we can set the stage for a positive conversation.
- 5:09Speaker 1: My friends and I do this, My siblings and I
- 5:11Speaker 1: do this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but most
- 5:15Speaker 1: often than not, the person that you're having a conversation
- 5:18Speaker 1: with if you say, listen, I think that we need
- 5:20Speaker 1: to have a serious conversation about X y Z. I
- 5:23Speaker 1: didn't like the way it made me feel when we
- 5:25Speaker 1: talked about this, or I could tell by the look
- 5:28Speaker 1: on your face that you didn't like the way that
- 5:30Speaker 1: I said a certain thing. So let's just lead with love,
- 5:34Speaker 1: listen to understand and hear and see where the conversation goes.
- 5:42Speaker 1: If you don't have people in your life that can
- 5:43Speaker 1: tell tell you these things and be an adult about it,
- 5:49Speaker 1: it's time to re evaluate your circle seriously, because don't
- 5:54Speaker 1: nobody have got time for that. Life is too short
- 5:58Speaker 1: and we have to be so careful and intentional. And
- 6:05Speaker 1: y'all probably gonna get tired of hearing that word, because
- 6:07Speaker 1: intentional is one of my favorite words right now, because
- 6:10Speaker 1: everything has a purpose for me at this moment in time.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I'm forty seven years old, and if it don't make
- 6:18Speaker 1: sense to me, it don't make sense. Why are you here?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Why are we wasting time? If we're not gonna listen
- 6:26Speaker 1: to understand and hear each other, what's the point of
- 6:29Speaker 1: having a conversation. And I wanted to talk about communication
- 6:33Speaker 1: because as a podcast host, it is important to know
- 6:39Speaker 1: how to communicate with guests so that you are clear
- 6:42Speaker 1: on the message that your guest is trying to convey
- 6:45Speaker 1: to the audience, on the conversation that you guys have
- 6:48Speaker 1: for the audience can gain some type of value in
- 6:52Speaker 1: the conversation, because otherwise, what's the point. And I've learned
- 6:57Speaker 1: so much about being a host. Didn't know that I
- 6:59Speaker 1: loved it, but I do. I love love meeting new people,
- 7:03Speaker 1: talking to different people, hearing their stories, and giving people
- 7:07Speaker 1: a voice on my platform. So communication is something that
- 7:10Speaker 1: is near and dear to my heart. And I take
- 7:13Speaker 1: pride in being a good communicator. Some people may not
- 7:16Speaker 1: say that, but majority of the people in my life
- 7:19Speaker 1: will say that I am a good listener and I'm
- 7:22Speaker 1: a good communicator. Yeah, I may have faults because I'm
- 7:26Speaker 1: passionate about certain things, so I can get a little
- 7:28Speaker 1: over zealous at times, especially when I feel like I'm
- 7:33Speaker 1: communicating to a brick wall. So Number one again was
- 7:39Speaker 1: enhance clarity and understanding. Knowing how to have the correct
- 7:45Speaker 1: tone in the communication will enhance the clarity and understanding
- 7:50Speaker 1: of the overall conversation. Number two, it builds trust and credibility.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Using an appropriate tone can build trust and established credibility,
- 7:59Speaker 1: which your audience with the person that you're having a
- 8:02Speaker 1: conversation with, or anybody that's listening. Because people are always listening,
- 8:06Speaker 1: they always watching, and they always listening. They remember how
- 8:09Speaker 1: you made them feel, and they don't remember what you
- 8:11Speaker 1: said and how you said it. I have a teacher
- 8:15Speaker 1: that I had in the third grade and she says
- 8:18Speaker 1: something to me that has stuck with me for all
- 8:21Speaker 1: of my life. She said, Nakipa, do not let anyone
- 8:27Speaker 1: make you feel that you are not good enough. Shout
- 8:29Speaker 1: out to miss Emma Williams, and I appreciate you for
- 8:33Speaker 1: pointing into my life at such an early age. The
- 8:35Speaker 1: things that we say to people matter, y'all. The things
- 8:38Speaker 1: that we say to people, they matter. They stick with people,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and it can tear people down and build them up.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So knowing how to use the right tone in communication,
- 8:48Speaker 1: it builds trust and it builds credibility. It also gives
- 8:53Speaker 1: off a sense of confidence and it tells the people.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It tells the person that you're speaking with that you
- 9:00Speaker 1: you are respectful in that you demand respect, You are professional,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and you are here to get the job done in
- 9:08Speaker 1: your personal life. It lets the person know that listen,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I am present, I am in the moment, I am
- 9:14Speaker 1: here with you. I am a safe space for you
- 9:16Speaker 1: at this moment in time. Open up your heart to
- 9:19Speaker 1: me with your words, and I am here for you.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It makes others more likely to engage positively with you
- 9:28Speaker 1: when you know how to effectively communicate with the right tone.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Number three, it conveys emotion and intent. There's the word intention.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Tone is powerful. It helps people express their emotions and intentions.
- 9:44Speaker 1: What do you aim to expire, console, persuade, or whatever
- 9:49Speaker 1: the situation may be. Using the correct tone helps to
- 9:54Speaker 1: enhance the experience and make a more impactful meaning for
- 9:58Speaker 1: your message. And number four, it helps to resolve conflict.
- 10:04Speaker 1: O my job, I talk to people ten hours a day.
- 10:08Speaker 1: My tone when they call sets the stage for that conversation.
- 10:14Speaker 1: If they call me and I don't feel like I
- 10:16Speaker 1: want to. If they hear in my voice that I
- 10:18Speaker 1: don't want to be bothered, or I'm just there for
- 10:21Speaker 1: a paycheck or whatever, guess what's gonna happen. They either
- 10:24Speaker 1: go treat me as such a hang up and call back.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It doesn't hurt anything to be pleasant, to have a
- 10:31Speaker 1: calm tone, to have great energy so that people can
- 10:38Speaker 1: adapt that because energy is contagious, y'all. So when we
- 10:42Speaker 1: effectively communicate, we can resolve conflicts before they even become conflicts,
- 10:50Speaker 1: because most people just looking for someone to listen and
- 10:53Speaker 1: understand and see where they're coming from and not try
- 10:56Speaker 1: to rush them or make them feel like their situation
- 10:59Speaker 1: is not important. I've been there, done that doesn't feel good.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I try my best now to put myself in situations
- 11:08Speaker 1: so that I can lead with compassion and empathy as
- 11:10Speaker 1: a human being. Kindness don't hurt anybody. Practice that. So
- 11:19Speaker 1: number five, it increases engagement and responsiveness. People respond to
- 11:23Speaker 1: people who they want to talk to. If you are cold,
- 11:28Speaker 1: are harsh, are mean? Do you think somebody want to
- 11:32Speaker 1: have a conversation with you? Nine times out of ten
- 11:34Speaker 1: you got somebody in the room rolling their eyes at you,
- 11:37Speaker 1: playing on their phone, messing with their nails, or looking
- 11:40Speaker 1: sideways or looking at you with the stink look like,
- 11:43Speaker 1: would you hurry up and sit down because I don't
- 11:45Speaker 1: want to hear nothing that you say. You're a mean
- 11:47Speaker 1: and I don't respect you, and no one likes you,
- 11:51Speaker 1: so we're done with this conversation. A tone that is
- 11:55Speaker 1: encouraging and positive can actively cause people to participate and
- 12:05Speaker 1: respond in the things that you're saying. A motivating and
- 12:11Speaker 1: inclusive tone will inspire others to contribute and participate. We
- 12:17Speaker 1: have all had this one teacher that was monotone that
- 12:20Speaker 1: was boring that we just did not want to go
- 12:24Speaker 1: to their class. We remember those teachers because we didn't
- 12:28Speaker 1: like the way that teacher made us feel when we
- 12:30Speaker 1: went in the environment. We also have those teachers that
- 12:34Speaker 1: was live and vibrant and inclusive and they just loved
- 12:39Speaker 1: what they did and it showed in the way that
- 12:42Speaker 1: they conveyed the message or the lessons that they were
- 12:45Speaker 1: teaching us that day. We remember those conversations. We remember
- 12:48Speaker 1: those teachers as well. Same thing with tone and communication,
- 12:52Speaker 1: people will always remember how you made them feel. Making
- 12:55Speaker 1: sure that people are engaging openly or give them the
- 13:00Speaker 1: opportunity to engage openly with your pleasantries. It creates a
- 13:06Speaker 1: great experience for everyone involved. Number six is it supports
- 13:13Speaker 1: relationship building. Having the right tone when you're talking to
- 13:17Speaker 1: your people matters. We don't know what we will face
- 13:23Speaker 1: when we leave our homes. We don't know what people
- 13:25Speaker 1: have faced when they are at home, what they escaped
- 13:29Speaker 1: when they come to work or school or whatever. So
- 13:34Speaker 1: show respect and empathy toward people, whether it's in a
- 13:38Speaker 1: personal relationship, friendship, for first professional relationship, or what have.
- 13:43Speaker 1: You Just offer a smile, give a compliment. It don't
- 13:49Speaker 1: cost you nothing. Hey, you have a nice smile. Oh
- 13:53Speaker 1: I like those shoes you're wearing. I love the color
- 13:55Speaker 1: of your hair. That will can can open up a
- 13:59Speaker 1: conversation to have someone vent, to help someone see that
- 14:03Speaker 1: life is not as hard as you think it is.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You just needed a little bit of reassurance from someone
- 14:09Speaker 1: who came into your space. Knowing how to communicate and
- 14:15Speaker 1: have them that correct tongue can strengthen bonds in relationships
- 14:18Speaker 1: and promote a sense of community. I have people that
- 14:24Speaker 1: I've never met in my life, and they are like
- 14:26Speaker 1: sisters and brothers. To me because we have formed this
- 14:29Speaker 1: community where we can communicate with each other effectively and
- 14:33Speaker 1: openly and honestly without judgment. We can be transparent with
- 14:37Speaker 1: each other. When I'm down, I know that they got
- 14:40Speaker 1: me same thing. It's all about the way that I
- 14:45Speaker 1: set the intentions with the communication, and how my tone
- 14:49Speaker 1: delivered the message that I wanted them to receive. There
- 14:52Speaker 1: is life and death in the tongue, So be mindful
- 14:58Speaker 1: of how you make people feel. Be mindyful how you
- 15:00Speaker 1: make yourself feel, because this is just not for having relationships.
- 15:04Speaker 1: The best relationship that one can have is with themselves.
- 15:07Speaker 1: So you set the stage for every other relationship that
- 15:11Speaker 1: you will have moving forward by the way that you
- 15:14Speaker 1: treat yourself. People can tell how you treat yourself by
- 15:18Speaker 1: the way that you walk, by the way that you glanced,
- 15:22Speaker 1: by the way that you dress, by the way that
- 15:24Speaker 1: you stand, by the way that you have looks on
- 15:27Speaker 1: your face, by your smile. I have talked to people
- 15:31Speaker 1: every day, and I can tell the ones who have
- 15:33Speaker 1: a genuine soul about themselves, and I making my business
- 15:38Speaker 1: to tell them, Stay cool, stay who you are, stay
- 15:42Speaker 1: the lovable person that I hear in your voice. You know,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I talked to a couple a couple of months ago
- 15:47Speaker 1: and both of them they one person was talking to
- 15:50Speaker 1: me and the other one was on speakerphone. And by
- 15:53Speaker 1: the end of the conversation, she had winning their kitchen
- 15:55Speaker 1: and picked up the other phone. Yeah, they was on
- 15:57Speaker 1: the landline. It was funny, and I was having a conversation,
- 16:01Speaker 1: a three way conversation with the husband, the wife and myself,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and we just laughed and talked and we had the
- 16:06Speaker 1: most amazing time and we wished each other well. We
- 16:12Speaker 1: laughed and we got on off the phone. But I
- 16:15Speaker 1: remembered that conversation because I'm telling y'all about it now
- 16:18Speaker 1: and it was months ago, So people will remember how
- 16:22Speaker 1: you made them feel. When it comes to effectively communicating
- 16:25Speaker 1: in the tone that you set, a receptive tone goes
- 16:30Speaker 1: a long way, especially when you're talking to someone who
- 16:34Speaker 1: has healed and they ain't about that BS in their lives.
- 16:40Speaker 1: You're not gonna talk to me any kind of way.
- 16:42Speaker 1: So if you think that that's what this is, you
- 16:44Speaker 1: could keep it moving. And number seven, guys, having the
- 16:50Speaker 1: correct tone reflects professionalism and competence. A polished and appropriate
- 16:59Speaker 1: tone tells your counterparts, the coworkers, whatever, that you are competent,
- 17:07Speaker 1: you are confidence, you are a professional, you know what
- 17:09Speaker 1: you're talking about. You deserve to be in this space,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and they are going to listen to what you have
- 17:16Speaker 1: to say because of those things that your tone is
- 17:20Speaker 1: telling them about you. Before you even get into the
- 17:23Speaker 1: importance of your message or your speech, or your listen
- 17:27Speaker 1: or whatever it is, This right here can enhance your
- 17:32Speaker 1: reputation in your professionalism. People will talk about you when
- 17:38Speaker 1: you finish talking about what you're talking about. I have
- 17:41Speaker 1: gone and been speakers at churches in different events, and
- 17:45Speaker 1: I have heard people say your name preceides you. It's
- 17:52Speaker 1: a great feeling. And I'm not bragging. It is what
- 17:55Speaker 1: it is. It didn't happen overnight because I was once broken.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I was once the person believed in theyself, who didn't
- 18:01Speaker 1: love their self. So I was just a shell of
- 18:04Speaker 1: a person. But when I realized whose I am and
- 18:12Speaker 1: that that being was put on earth. This being was
- 18:17Speaker 1: put on earth with the purpose to help others, to
- 18:22Speaker 1: encourage others to pour into others. Man listen season eight
- 18:32Speaker 1: of the podcast, and I don't see myself stopping at
- 18:36Speaker 1: any moment. I don't see myself stopping. I love it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I don't care if I only reach one or two people.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I have done my job and I know a lot
- 18:49Speaker 1: of people like numbers and stuff like that, and numbers
- 18:51Speaker 1: are good when you are trying to get sponsorship and
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know, build up community, a content community and things
- 18:57Speaker 1: like that. But you have to put into work. You
- 18:59Speaker 1: have to be in sinstant. You have to offer value,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and you have to let people know that I am
- 19:05Speaker 1: who I am. Every time that you turn on kicking
- 19:08Speaker 1: it with Kiki, this is who you're gonna get. The
- 19:11Speaker 1: little girl from Greensburg, Louisiana who loves to talk and
- 19:15Speaker 1: pour into people in a positive way. The next time
- 19:18Speaker 1: that you are having a conversation with someone, just remember
- 19:22Speaker 1: to set your expectations high so that understanding can be
- 19:30Speaker 1: the overall goal. So that the person that you're having
- 19:34Speaker 1: a conversation with feel seen and heard, that their voice
- 19:38Speaker 1: is safe and you are giving it wings to fly.
- 19:44Speaker 1: And I promise you the relationships you have will grow.
- 19:52Speaker 1: The people who are not supposed to be in your
- 19:53Speaker 1: life will eventually counsel themselves out. Leave with love, lead
- 20:00Speaker 1: with empathy, lead with intention, and just be kind and
- 20:11Speaker 1: any conversation that you have, even if it's a hostile conversation,
- 20:20Speaker 1: it will not be hostile if you do those things
- 20:24Speaker 1: and set your tone so that people can understand yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 1: but yeah, And if you don't know what I just said,
- 20:38Speaker 1: you got the right one today. And I can speak
- 20:44Speaker 1: to someone just like you. Hear me speaking right now,
- 20:48Speaker 1: be very firm on what I'm trying to convey. Not
- 20:51Speaker 1: use a curse word or demeaning word or anything else.
- 20:54Speaker 1: But that person will respect me by the time that
- 20:57Speaker 1: we finish the conversation because of my integrity, because of
- 21:04Speaker 1: my tone, because of the confidence, and because that I
- 21:09Speaker 1: understand that sometimes it is not about me. Sometimes that
- 21:15Speaker 1: person has had a bad day because bad shit just
- 21:18Speaker 1: has happened to them and they don't know how to
- 21:21Speaker 1: let that go or shake it off and move on
- 21:24Speaker 1: to the next thing. Hurt people, hurt people. Do you
- 21:27Speaker 1: know how many people don't have somebody to talk to?
- 21:30Speaker 1: And if you have somebody in your life that you
- 21:32Speaker 1: can talk to and you choose not to talk to them,
- 21:34Speaker 1: shame on you. Shame on you, because at some point
- 21:39Speaker 1: you need to grow up and understand that, yeah, I
- 21:42Speaker 1: may not have had the space to communicate openly and
- 21:45Speaker 1: effectively and honestly and transparent or whatever. As a kid,
- 21:48Speaker 1: my parents didn't let me talk or whatever. You are
- 21:51Speaker 1: grown as hell, your parents are grown. It's time to
- 21:57Speaker 1: move on and let go. People did what they could
- 22:00Speaker 1: do because that's all they saw, or that that's all
- 22:02Speaker 1: they were able to give. It is hard out here, guys.
- 22:07Speaker 1: It is hard, and us contributing to the madness is unnecessary.
- 22:16Speaker 1: So all I want to say in closing, and I
- 22:18Speaker 1: want to thank you for tuning in to another episode
- 22:20Speaker 1: of Kicking that wikiki communication has to happen. We are
- 22:28Speaker 1: not here to go through life alone. And it's okay
- 22:33Speaker 1: to sometimes talk to yourself because sometimes we have to
- 22:35Speaker 1: check ourselves before we wreck ourselves. And I know I
- 22:39Speaker 1: just told my age, but whatever, But just move with intention, man,
- 22:47Speaker 1: move the way that you want to be that you
- 22:49Speaker 1: want people to see you, and everything else will be okay.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Trust God, trust the process, and trust yourself. If you
- 22:59Speaker 1: do those three things, any conversation that you have would
- 23:03Speaker 1: be an effective one. Just set your tone, set the expectations,
