Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to another episode of Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! So glad to be here. I've been practicing my Swahili, especially after that coffee episode. Lucas: Oh, awesome! So today, since we did coffee last time, I thought we'd cover something similar but different — ordering tea at a café. Luna: Oh, nice! I love tea. So let me guess, 'Nataka chai' means 'I want tea'? Lucas: Exactly! Nataka chai. You've got it. Let's break it down: 'Nataka' means 'I want', and 'chai' is 'tea'. So 'Nataka chai'. Luna: Nataka chai. That's easy. I want tea. Lucas: Perfect. Now, what if you want tea with milk? You'd say 'Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali.' 'Maziwa' is milk. Luna: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Tea with milk, please. I like that. Lucas: And if you want it without sugar? 'Chai bila sukari.' 'Bila' means without. Luna: Chai bila sukari. So 'bila' is without. Got it. What about just ordering one tea? Lucas: Then you'd say 'Chai moja, tafadhali.' 'Moja' means one. So 'Chai moja, tafadhali' — one tea, please. Luna: Chai moja, tafadhali. And of course, 'Asante sana' for thank you very much. Lucas: Exactly. So let's hear them all together. Repeat after me: Nataka chai. Luna: Nataka chai. Lucas: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Luna: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Lucas: Chai bila sukari. Luna: Chai bila sukari. Lucas: Chai moja, tafadhali. Luna: Chai moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Asante sana. Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: Great! Now let's put it in a little scene. Imagine you walk into a café. The server says 'Karibu' — welcome. Luna: Okay, I say 'Asante. Nataka chai.' Lucas: And they ask 'Chai gani?' — what kind of tea? Luna: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Lucas: And they say 'Sukari?' — sugar? Luna: Chai bila sukari. And then 'Asante sana.' Lucas: Perfect! You just ordered tea like a pro. That's really good, Luna. Luna: Thanks! I feel like I could actually do that now. Lucas: And you know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili like Luna just did, a small contribution on buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo genuinely keeps these episodes going. Luna: Yeah, even a couple of dollars a month really helps. It keeps the show ad-free and lets us keep making these little lessons. Lucas: Absolutely. No pressure at all, but if you've gotten something out of it, that's where you can support us. So anyway, let's practice one more time. Nataka chai. Luna: Nataka chai.
