- 0:13Twenty five million people.
- 0:16That is how many visitors came through Oklahoma City last year,
- 0:20according to a recent Visit OKC economic impact report.
- 0:24And, uh, they spent two point nine billion dollars while they were here.
- 0:30Wow.
- 0:31Two point nine billion?
- 0:34That is, uh, that is a lot of hotel rooms and barbecue.
- 0:38It really is.
- 0:40But here is the hole in that headline.
- 0:43If you are actually working those front desk shifts or serving those tables,
- 0:48hospitality wages in the metro are still pretty much stuck between fourteen and
- 0:53sixteen dollars an hour.
- 0:55Meanwhile, average rent in Oklahoma City is sitting right around eleven hundred and
- 1:01fifty dollars a month.
- 1:04Yeah, do the math on that.
- 1:06Fourteen bucks an hour before taxes?
- 1:08You are spending well over half your paycheck just to keep a roof over your head.
- 1:13It, it does not add up.
- 1:15It doesn't!
- 1:16And, you know, there is all this talk right now about State Question 832,
- 1:21which is a state minimum wage proposal that would raise the baseline to ten dollars
- 1:25and fifty cents an hour in 2026.
- 1:28But, look, waiting on a ballot measure to slowly kick in does not pay this month's
- 1:34rent.
- 1:35Man, I, I remember back when I was doing early morning radio,
- 1:39working four hour split shifts at pre dawn hours, juggling two other part time gigs
- 1:44just to survive.
- 1:46You cannot wait on state legislation when your electric bill is due next Tuesday.
- 1:51You need, uh, you need cash flow today.
- 1:54Exactly.
- 1:56Which is why you have to bypass the black hole of online job portals right now.
- 2:01The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, or OESC, is running direct walk in
- 2:07hiring events at local workforce centers across the city.
- 2:10Wait, so like, actual real people hiring on the spot?
- 2:15Not just dropping a resume into an algorithm?
- 2:18Actual humans!
- 2:20Right now, OESC has walk in events featuring Walmart fulfillment roles starting at
- 2:26seventeen fifty an hour.
- 2:27Plus, American Fidelity over on North Western Avenue is doing direct recruitment for
- 2:33customer support openings starting at eighteen fifty an hour.
- 2:37Eighteen fifty an hour with actual stability.
- 2:41That is a massive jump over a fourteen dollar shift job.
- 2:45Huge.
- 2:46And the play here is simple.
- 2:48Grab two forms of government ID, update a one page resume, and walk into an OESC
- 2:54recruitment session this week.
- 2:56You can literally lock in a same week interview slot without waiting weeks for an
- 3:01email reply.
- 3:02Okay, so getting to eighteen fifty an hour solves the immediate emergency.
- 3:07But how do you push past that toward twenty four or twenty five bucks an hour
- 3:12without spending four years in college getting a massive degree?
- 3:16You use fast track career certifications.
- 3:19Right here in town, Metro Tech at their Springlake Campus on Springlake Drive offers
- 3:24short term technical training.
- 3:26We are talking eight week programs in things like Clinical Phlebotomy or getting
- 3:31your Commercial Driver License, your CDL.
- 3:34Eight weeks?
- 3:36That is, er, that is basically two months.
- 3:39But what does tuition cost?
- 3:42Because if you are earning sixteen an hour, paying thousands upfront is pretty much
- 3:47out of the question.
- 3:49This is the best part.
- 3:50Through the Central Oklahoma Workforce Innovation Board, or COWIB,
- 3:55there is federal WIOA grant funding available.
- 3:59If you are an adult worker earning under eighteen dollars an hour,
- 4:03COWIB can cover one hundred percent of your tuition.
- 4:06Zero out of pocket cost.
- 4:08No student debt.
- 4:10Wait, serious?
- 4:12Free tuition?
- 4:14Why is nobody screaming this from the rooftops?
- 4:17I know!
- 4:18It is a totally underused resource.
- 4:21You get trained in eight weeks, jump into an industry paying twenty four plus an
- 4:26hour, and COWIB picks up the tab.
- 4:30Man, that is huge.
- 4:31Now, while you are in those eight weeks, you still need immediate cash coming in.
- 4:38What is the smartest move for quick weekend income around OKC?
- 4:43Targeted delivery gig work, specifically Walmart Spark in high volume metro zones.
- 4:49On peak weekend windows, drivers are averaging twenty two to twenty six dollars an
- 4:54hour.
- 4:55Okay, but a quick word of warning on side gig money from my old hustle days.
- 5:00Never, ever drop side hustle earnings into your primary checking account.
- 5:05Route that Spark money straight into a totally separate account for rent and bills.
- 5:09If it sits in your daily account, it just vanishes into morning coffee and
- 5:14groceries.
- 5:15That is such a solid rule.
- 5:17Separate the cash streams.
- 5:19And to make sure your household budget stays completely stable while you upskill,
- 5:24tap into local community support.
- 5:26The Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City offers LIHEAP utility assistance to
- 5:32keep your light bill down.
- 5:33And the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City on North Classen Boulevard provides
- 5:37completely free one on one financial coaching.
- 5:41So you stack the direct hire job today, use COWIB to get free Metro Tech training,
- 5:47run a disciplined weekend gig, and lock down your bills with local resources.
- 5:51That is the blueprint.
- 5:53You don't have to wait on the economy to fix itself when you have concrete steps you
- 5:58can take this week.
- 6:01Amen to that.
- 6:02Let us go get it done.
