Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hey a miss, and I'm the front woman of a
- 0:14Speaker 1: pedal core band, to Horizon, and we have just released
- 0:19Speaker 1: our new single, Sober, which is a little bit. I
- 0:23Speaker 1: feel like it has a little bit of everything for
- 0:24Speaker 1: anybody that likes heavy music. It's got your medical elements
- 0:28Speaker 1: but also some pop and prague.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Why not, why not?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Indeed, mess thanks for joining us today, Thanks for having me,
- 0:34Speaker 3: oh pleasures as you say, tries, and have just released
- 0:37Speaker 3: your second single of the year with Sober, so exciting
- 0:40Speaker 3: times in the band. We haven't heard from you for
- 0:41Speaker 3: a bit and then you come back and we've got
- 0:43Speaker 3: bang bang.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It's good to see.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we were quiet in the background, working away and
- 0:48Speaker 1: a lot of things. We were really just working on
- 0:50Speaker 1: leveling up everything really a songwriting, tech, visuals, branding, everything,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and that took a couple of years to play and write,
- 0:58Speaker 1: produce and plan, marketing and all that strategized.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So here we are, here, we are nice now.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Sober it seems to be a lot Karma is the
- 1:07Speaker 3: right pubabic word for it for what we've come to
- 1:10Speaker 3: expect from your music, So run us through the track
- 1:12Speaker 3: from a musical point of view and what you're going
- 1:14Speaker 3: for with it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Honestly, like Luke has a really good way of writing.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He's a very talented guitarist but also very talented songwriter,
- 1:24Speaker 1: as much as he doesn't like to think that. That's
- 1:27Speaker 1: as musicians, we can't think we're good because otherwise we
- 1:30Speaker 1: are not going to work hard and not improve, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: we got to think we're terrible.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Good point.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so he did a really good job of Lake
- 1:38Speaker 1: just as soon as we wrote. This was written with
- 1:41Speaker 1: a bunch of other tracks, right, and this one was
- 1:43Speaker 1: we wanted to do something a little bit different with it,
- 1:46Speaker 1: like that is a little bit quieter and it's got
- 1:48Speaker 1: moments but then wait till the ridge that takes you
- 1:51Speaker 1: away and then he gets the screams. So musically it
- 1:55Speaker 1: was just about, honestly, whatever felt right in the moment,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and we never really have like a set direction and
- 2:01Speaker 1: must be this, this and this just what feels right now.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Fava follows on lyrically from your previous single Bloom, So
- 2:08Speaker 3: to get the full picture first, tell us more about
- 2:10Speaker 3: Bloom and the meeting behind that song.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Absolutely so Sober is actually also the acting debut for
- 2:18Speaker 1: Ben Fasis. He's playing the role of Sam So in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the first single Bloom, we talked about a story. It's
- 2:26Speaker 1: going to be a concept. It's going to be a
- 2:28Speaker 1: story between a couple, Luna and Samson. We call him Sam.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's a sneaky reference to Pokemon, Sun and Moon to
- 2:34Speaker 1: be honest. Yeah, but we wanted to talk about something
- 2:38Speaker 1: that a lot of people in our crew have experienced also,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like wider in general, is fertility issues. And the best
- 2:46Speaker 1: way we thought we could kind of talk about it
- 2:48Speaker 1: is by depersonalizing it from us and from other people
- 2:51Speaker 1: and making it about a story. So Bloom saw Luna
- 2:56Speaker 1: and Sam go through the pregnancy loss and it was
- 2:59Speaker 1: just like shock and grief in that moment. Sober takes
- 3:04Speaker 1: to you onto the second chapter where they start unraveling,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and it can happen to a lot of couples. I mean,
- 3:11Speaker 1: everybody deals with grief differently, but we use addiction as
- 3:15Speaker 1: a metaphor in particular with Sober for the grief and
- 3:19Speaker 1: the push and pull and how one can unravel. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: it is a reality for some people then that when
- 3:26Speaker 1: you are hit with such cataclysmic things that happen to you,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you can just reach out for comforting things and rely
- 3:35Speaker 1: on groping mechanisms sometimes, So it was kind of a
- 3:37Speaker 1: two pronged approach, like definitely wanted to talk about addiction,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but also talk about using that as a metaphor, talk
- 3:44Speaker 1: about how the grief can be and how like couples
- 3:46Speaker 1: can unravel.
- 3:49Speaker 3: As well as been as acting debut and sober. Ben
- 3:52Speaker 3: also does your vocals with you on the song? Is
- 3:55Speaker 3: that normal for you guys to have that?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Honestly, the last few years we've just been like
- 3:59Speaker 1: writing a bunch of songs, and now if there's a
- 4:01Speaker 1: song without Ben's vocals, I'm like, adamake it. He's a
- 4:06Speaker 1: very talented vocalist and he adds beautiful dimension and it'd
- 4:09Speaker 1: be very silly of us to use him.
- 4:12Speaker 3: It's actually good, Like I hope this comes across the
- 4:14Speaker 3: right way because it's intended to be a compliment. But
- 4:17Speaker 3: when I read that he wants doing vocals as well,
- 4:20Speaker 3: I listened back through the song again to see if
- 4:22Speaker 3: I could pick up on it, And it's not an obvious
- 4:24Speaker 3: distinction between the two voices.
- 4:26Speaker 2: They work in.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Really wall together, which I think is great because sometimes
- 4:28Speaker 3: the contrast could be too much.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Do you guys just work well together?
- 4:32Speaker 1: Oh? Thank you? So much. That's something we definitely noticed
- 4:35Speaker 1: because even Luke's got a very similar voice to Ben
- 4:37Speaker 1: and he used to do the singing a bit live
- 4:39Speaker 1: as well, and we our voices blended really well. And
- 4:42Speaker 1: I mean they're bromance. They've been friends for like, I
- 4:45Speaker 1: don't know, a decade. So yeah, so yeah, I love that.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Thank you, Aye.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Now, Bloy and Sober are both taken from your debut EP,
- 4:54Speaker 3: melli Aura, which comes out on September now nineteenth. Now,
- 4:58Speaker 3: I did a bit of research before we had a chat,
- 4:59Speaker 3: and Meliora is Latin for better or the pursuit of
- 5:03Speaker 3: better things.
- 5:03Speaker 2: So is that an underlying theme across the EP?
- 5:06Speaker 1: It is absolutely that Meliura is taken from add Meliora
- 5:09Speaker 1: towards better things and it is a theme. And say, look,
- 5:13Speaker 1: this EP does have a happy ending, So I'll spoil
- 5:15Speaker 1: that because I feel like we definitely need that in
- 5:19Speaker 1: particularly if somebody is going through these things, I don't
- 5:21Speaker 1: want them to just think like it's just all going
- 5:22Speaker 1: to be sad and do with gloom and like, especially
- 5:25Speaker 1: for people in the Rainbow community, they rely on fertility
- 5:28Speaker 1: treatments and things like that can be like a complete
- 5:32Speaker 1: ending of like the dream to have a family. So
- 5:36Speaker 1: the Meliora will take everybody through. Each song is like
- 5:40Speaker 1: a different aspect of how that grief and how you
- 5:43Speaker 1: come back together.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's a very deep concept and it's it's
- 5:49Speaker 3: a very be very difficult subject to broach because it's
- 5:52Speaker 3: not done that often. Like but in the writing process,
- 5:55Speaker 3: did you have to did you have to be careful.
- 5:58Speaker 2: What you said or what you didn't say, or how
- 6:00Speaker 2: you worded things.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Or I think one of the things is that it
- 6:05Speaker 1: is not talked about, which makes it really hard to
- 6:07Speaker 1: bring up or even ask people. And a lot of
- 6:09Speaker 1: the times people that have friends are supporting somebody going
- 6:14Speaker 1: through these challenges, they don't know where to start or
- 6:16Speaker 1: how to ask. So one of the things we did
- 6:19Speaker 1: was I wrote with the band an article with Ramana
- 6:23Speaker 1: magazine about five ways how you can support somebody through
- 6:26Speaker 1: fertility challenges and things like that. So we want to
- 6:29Speaker 1: throughout this unraveling of the EP, you will hear from
- 6:34Speaker 1: different voices and you will get resources and as well
- 6:37Speaker 1: as like context and how to practically help people through it.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And conceptually, no, it's just like it's just whatever feels
- 6:44Speaker 1: right obviously is what we kind of go with and
- 6:48Speaker 1: we try and keep things honest.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, good good.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Then it seems like Thries and have been around forever,
- 6:55Speaker 3: like you guys have been a part of the scene
- 6:56Speaker 3: since I moved to Bristol six years ago. Scenes like
- 6:59Speaker 3: that been anyway, But it's hard to believe this is
- 7:02Speaker 3: going to be your debut EP.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I know. Well one of the things that we were like,
- 7:06Speaker 1: we have released an EP before, which was kind of
- 7:09Speaker 1: a collection of singles, and there had been some other
- 7:11Speaker 1: music that was out. But at the same time, pandemic
- 7:14Speaker 1: happened and lineups changed because of the pandemic and obviously
- 7:19Speaker 1: people not having access to income anymore, which I completely understand.
- 7:23Speaker 1: As we did a reshuffle of I guess as the
- 7:26Speaker 1: final lineup solidified, we wanted to do a soft rebrand
- 7:33Speaker 1: of like who we are now because those songs kind
- 7:34Speaker 1: of if you listen to them and you listen to
- 7:36Speaker 1: what we sound like now, it's like chalk and cheese
- 7:39Speaker 1: in terms of like it's very discombobulating, not so much
- 7:43Speaker 1: not a comment on the quality, but it's like it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: just like, oh my god, wait, is this savent? What's happened?
- 7:49Speaker 1: So we wanted to really make our image more concise
- 7:51Speaker 1: and more intentional. So there's the reason why we've archived
- 7:55Speaker 1: some of the older stuff. And who knows down the
- 7:57Speaker 1: track I might re release it. It was they're still good, Zong,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I still love them.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That's any young Manchas.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You guys have pretty much made a name for yourselves
- 8:07Speaker 3: already used an established band, but this is your first,
- 8:09Speaker 3: as you say, just in rebranding for your sorts as
- 8:12Speaker 3: a body of work. So what sorts of things do
- 8:14Speaker 3: you discuss as a band going into that, Like do
- 8:16Speaker 3: you plan things out or do you leave it to chance?
- 8:19Speaker 1: Oh, never leave anything to chance for me, Nope, not
- 8:21Speaker 1: with my anxiety if I mean, it's just a lot
- 8:26Speaker 1: of it is. And again, like you know what it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: like having worked in the industry for a while, it's
- 8:30Speaker 1: just like, well, you kind of have to have a
- 8:33Speaker 1: clear vision. Some of the things we discussed were like
- 8:35Speaker 1: what you know, what kind of values do you all
- 8:38Speaker 1: individually hold and we hold collectively as a band, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: how can we represent those? So for us to say,
- 8:44Speaker 1: inclusivity is very important, you know, and highlighting things that
- 8:47Speaker 1: people don't talk about or even if they talk about,
- 8:49Speaker 1: if there are still things like mental health and stuff
- 8:51Speaker 1: that still needs to be talked about more. So, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: how do we like make it an inclusive experience and
- 8:59Speaker 1: have people be able to relate or like, for me personally,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I just want to do whatever necess it for me.
- 9:03Speaker 1: When I was like sixteen, you know, where it was
- 9:06Speaker 1: just like, oh this, I understand this. There's somebody else
- 9:09Speaker 1: out in the world who knows what I'm feeling. And
- 9:11Speaker 1: then that was it to help me sort of like
- 9:13Speaker 1: get over a pretty bad period of my life. So yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 1: so that's kind of the discussion branding and stuff wise.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I mean, like it's all about like what kind of colors.
- 9:23Speaker 1: We had a Pinterest board. It was so funny. We
- 9:25Speaker 1: were boys and i Will had like a little Pinterest
- 9:27Speaker 1: styling board the visuals and that's what we that's I
- 9:31Speaker 1: find pinterest Sport's really helpful because you can really like
- 9:34Speaker 1: visualize everything, you can talk about it. But I want
- 9:36Speaker 1: to make sure that when I say this purple, everybody
- 9:39Speaker 1: else knows which purple I'm talking about, a vice versa,
- 9:42Speaker 1: because Luke's really good with like he's got a really
- 9:44Speaker 1: good eye with combining the color with the concept. So yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: and then we gave all of that to our broader people,
- 9:51Speaker 1: being like, this is what we want to do.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I go for it.
- 9:56Speaker 3: In another first forturizon, you guys are setting off on
- 9:59Speaker 3: your first head I'd run the shows, pick it off
- 10:01Speaker 3: in Sydney on October the eleven, Melbourne the following night,
- 10:04Speaker 3: and finishing Bristol on October at eight eight.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So what can we expect from me is I'm excited.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Oh man, We've done so much leveling up honestly now
- 10:12Speaker 1: tech it's so exciting. I can't wait to like unfold
- 10:14Speaker 1: it and use the new riak. But in general, expect drama,
- 10:19Speaker 1: like dramatic show because you know, have like the themes
- 10:23Speaker 1: and everything the songs have like lots of layers and stuff.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Expect that because it is going to be fun. It's
- 10:30Speaker 1: gonna be rifee yes, we're gonna have some roofew breakdowns,
- 10:32Speaker 1: but it's also going to be very visceral and raw
- 10:35Speaker 1: and live harmonies with Ben and I. It's really fun.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I love it, and you know it's it's gonna be
- 10:42Speaker 1: a good time and I'm gonna I really want to.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm really excited to make like Pedal Court Live as
- 10:48Speaker 1: our first headline tour, like, I just want to people.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I want people to experience that. I want people to
- 10:54Speaker 1: experience what we experience in the band practice room, which
- 10:56Speaker 1: is a lot of fun and just you know, we're
- 10:59Speaker 1: just a bunch of nerds.
- 11:01Speaker 3: You said this twice now, this term, and when I
- 11:03Speaker 3: first read it, I had no idea. I thought you'd
- 11:05Speaker 3: made a mistake. Actually, but petel core, where does that
- 11:08Speaker 3: come a bit? It's a beautiful name for metal.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Yeah, we were traveling, we did a bunch of inter
- 11:14Speaker 1: state shows and this kind of came up then where
- 11:18Speaker 1: one of the bands of fis Amiga, who I love.
- 11:20Speaker 1: They said like it sounds like, you know, metalcore with
- 11:24Speaker 1: like pop vibes, and I was like, pedal core, it
- 11:27Speaker 1: wasn't me, but it was like they came up with it.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Don't don't let me take credit here. But we were
- 11:31Speaker 1: like we're like, let's this is perfect, let's do it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: That's us. And then as the music evolved there was
- 11:36Speaker 1: like some prog elements coming through, so it's like pop
- 11:39Speaker 1: prog metal core.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I like it. I like that.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Indeed, are you're going to be taking Melbourne alternative metal
- 11:46Speaker 3: band New Million for the three shows? So tell us
- 11:48Speaker 3: you more about them and watchoos Themon's touring partners.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Honestly, they we have been trying to lock something in
- 11:54Speaker 1: together to perform for a little while and we just
- 11:57Speaker 1: kept like clashing with Timeline. So it was like finally
- 12:02Speaker 1: quote a creative other promoters, and they specifically peaked New Million,
- 12:07Speaker 1: which was so amazing because I'm like, oh my god,
- 12:08Speaker 1: We've been trying to like work something out with them,
- 12:10Speaker 1: which is great, really nice bunch of peeps. Great music.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Music connects well with us. I feel that like fans
- 12:18Speaker 1: who are interested in electronic and like metalcore heavy music,
- 12:22Speaker 1: kind of like modern sort of heavy metal, I would
- 12:24Speaker 1: say they're going to really have a good time.
- 12:27Speaker 2: So yeah, nice.
- 12:28Speaker 3: And where is the best place for people to pre
- 12:31Speaker 3: order the EP or keep up with what's Horizon doing?
- 12:34Speaker 1: Absolutely so you can follow us on everything. To Rizon
- 12:37Speaker 1: band is basically everywhere. That's a handle on TikTok to
- 12:42Speaker 1: us an official. That's the only one because it was
- 12:44Speaker 1: the other one was taken. But TikTok is where you
- 12:47Speaker 1: see us be like stilly and more of like our
- 12:50Speaker 1: personalities a lot more than you see on Instagram and things,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and just honestly, any of the social platforms. There's a
- 12:57Speaker 1: linking by it'll take you everywhere, all the tech's and
- 13:00Speaker 1: everything for sale. I'll link there too. I forgot the
- 13:02Speaker 1: other question, so adhd do me?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Thanks so much now the single Sober is out now.
- 13:09Speaker 3: EP Malora is out September ninety. The Tall starts October
- 13:13Speaker 3: the eleventh. So there's lots happening with Horizon, Best of Black,
- 13:15Speaker 3: with it all, and we'll catch you at the Brisbane
- 13:18Speaker 3: show probably.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Yes, I can't wait.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Branch run News well now, well, welcome there. He then
