- 0:23You've heard it in church. You've seen it online. Maybe even said it yourself.
- 0:28You know, it sounds biblical. But is it?
- 0:31Welcome to Jesus Never Said That, a special series from Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 0:36I'm Angel Santana. Today, we're gonna go beyond the quotes, cliches,
- 0:40and assumptions to discover what God's word actually says.
- 0:44So grab your Bible, bring your questions, because Have Faith,
- 0:47Let It Begin starts right now.
- 0:55Welcome to Half-Faith, Let It Begin. This is Ariel Santana.
- 0:59Can you believe I'm seven years old already? I'm old enough now to introduce my dad.
- 1:05Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 1:10Two thousand came and the spark was lit.
- 1:45He walks the road.
- 2:14Walks the road been used in Christian artwork. It's been printed on cards.
- 2:19It's become one of the most recognizable images of biblical peace.
- 2:25And if I asked a room full of people, where does the Bible say the lion will lie down with the lamb?
- 2:32Somebody would probably answer Isaiah.
- 2:36And they'd be close Because Isaiah absolutely contains a beautiful prophecy
- 2:43involving animals that would normally be enemies living together in peace.
- 2:50Here's the surprise. The Bible never actually says the lion will lie down with the lamb.
- 2:57So what does it say?
- 3:00Well, grab your Bible. Here's what Isaiah 11 says.
- 3:04Before we read it, here's today's heart check. How often do I remember what
- 3:09I think the Bible says instead of checking what it actually says?
- 3:14That's really what this series, entire series of 10 episodes that we're trying
- 3:19to do. this is episode eight, by the way, has been about.
- 3:22Sometimes we're not intentionally twisting scripture. We've simply heard something
- 3:27so many times that our brain fills in the blanks.
- 3:31Someone quotes it. We hear it in a sermon. We see it online.
- 3:36We repeat it and somebody else repeats it. And eventually we stop checking.
- 3:41So here's a habit I want us to develop. Whenever somebody says,
- 3:46the Bible says, including me, don't be afraid to ask where.
- 3:52That's not disrespectful. That's not biblical.
- 3:57That's not a biblical. What's the word I'm looking for?
- 4:01Criticism. No, it's biblical curiosity. So as I'm in school,
- 4:06I'm hearing these phrases and I'm starting to ask questions and I'm that by
- 4:10opening the Bible and I read it myself, that's when I realized some of these
- 4:14things are not actually in the Bible.
- 4:16What Isaiah, now getting back to Isaiah, is actually saying,
- 4:20let's take a look at it. Isaiah 11, verse six.
- 4:24The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat,
- 4:30the calf and the lion and the yearling together, and a little child will lead them. Wait a minute.
- 4:38Read that first part again. The wolf will live with the lamb,
- 4:44not the lion will lie down with the lamb.
- 4:48The wolf is paired with the lamb, the leopard with the goat.
- 4:52And the lion doesn't or does appear actually in the passage.
- 4:57So the lion does appear in the passage, but alongside the calf and the yearling.
- 5:02So the lion didn't disappear. somewhere along the way, our collective memory
- 5:07simply rearranged the animals. And honestly, I understand why.
- 5:11A lion and a lamb make a powerful image.
- 5:14One represents strength, and the other, vulnerability.
- 5:18One predator, one prey.
- 5:20And throughout scripture, both lions and lambs carry powerful imagery.
- 5:24So over time, that pairing became deeply embedded in Christian culture.
- 5:30But it still isn't what Isaiah 11, 6 actually says.
- 5:35But don't miss the bigger message. Now, here's where I don't want us to make a mistake.
- 5:41We could end the episode right here and say, gotcha, it's a wolf, not a lion, ha ha ha, no.
- 5:48But then we'd be missing something far more important than identifying the correct animal.
- 5:54Because Isaiah wasn't giving us a zoology quiz. He was giving us a vision of hope.
- 6:01Go back to the beginning of Isaiah 11, verse 1 says, a shoot will come from, let's start over.
- 6:09A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse from his roots and branch will bear fruit.
- 6:17Christians have historically understood this passage as pointing toward the
- 6:21coming Messiah from the line of David.
- 6:25Isaiah is describing a ruler characterized by righteousness,
- 6:29justice, faithfulness, and the spirit of the Lord.
- 6:34Then comes the extraordinary picture of creation, transformed.
- 6:38Animals that should be enemies aren't enemies anymore. Predator and prey exist together.
- 6:45A child can be among them without fear.
- 6:49You know, something has changed.
- 6:51Peace has replaced hostility. That's the bigger message. So what kind of peace?
- 6:59You know, we often think that peace means nothing bad is happening right now.
- 7:04But biblically, peace goes deeper.
- 7:07As I'm learning Hebrew, the Hebrew idea of shalom carries the sense of wholeness, completeness.
- 7:14Well-being, and things being made right.
- 7:18Isaiah is painting a picture of the world no longer ruled by the hostility and
- 7:23destruction we know so well.
- 7:26Think about our world. War, violence, division,
- 7:31families not speaking, communities fighting, people divided by politics,
- 7:38People divided by race. People divided by religion.
- 7:42People who can't even disagree anymore without treating each other like enemies.
- 7:48And then Isaiah gives us this image. Enemies at peace. That's not cute artwork. That's radical.
- 7:57The prince of peace. And who brings this kind of peace? Isaiah points us toward God's promised king.
- 8:05Earlier, in Isaiah 9, verse 6, we hear these famous words.
- 8:12For to us, a child is born. To us, a son is given.
- 8:19And among his titles, Prince of Peace, as Christians, we see the fulfillment of that hope in Jesus.
- 8:26And here's where the prophecy becomes personal.
- 8:30Jesus becomes, well, Jesus doesn't simply promise peace someday.
- 8:35He begins creating peace in us and through us now.
- 8:40Jesus says in Matthew 5, verse 9, Blessed are the peacemakers,
- 8:45for they will be called children of God. Notice, not merely blessed are the people who like peace.
- 8:53But not merely blessed are the people who like peace,
- 8:55peacemakers, people who participate in it, people who bring reconciliation into
- 9:03divided places, Jesus, lion and lamb.
- 9:09And there's another reason I think the lion and the lamb image became so powerful
- 9:13in Christianity because scripture eventually uses both images for Jesus.
- 9:18I mean, in John 1 verse 29, John the Baptist sees Jesus and says,
- 9:23look, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Well, Jesus is the lamb.
- 9:29But then go to Revelation 5.5. Jesus is described as the lion of the tribe of Judah.
- 9:36Lion and lamb. Strength and sacrifice. Victory and humility.
- 9:45Both images ultimately point us toward Christ. So while the lion will lie down
- 9:50with the lamb, Isn't it an actual Bible verse?
- 9:54I'm confused. So while the lion will lie down with the lamb isn't an actual Bible verse,
- 10:01it's understandable why those two images become so powerful together in Christian imaginations.
- 10:12But again, beautifully symbolized, or maybe I should say symbolism,
- 10:17isn't the same thing as quoting scripture accurately. That's the lesson.
- 10:23And as I was reading my material, personal reflection came to me.
- 10:26I actually love this example because it's different from some of the others we've covered.
- 10:32Nobody needs to feel embarrassed for thinking the Bible says this.
- 10:36This isn't about catching people,
- 10:39making a mistake. It's about learning how easily our memories can blend.
- 10:45Scripture, tradition, artwork, sermons, songs, and things we've heard throughout our lives.
- 10:52And eventually, it all starts sounding like one big Bible verse.
- 10:56I've had moments myself where I've thought, I know that's in the Bible there somewhere.
- 11:02Then I look and I realize, wait, that's not actually what it says.
- 11:07And that's okay. The problem isn't realizing we remembered something incorrectly.
- 11:11The problem would be refusing to check.
- 11:15And that's why I keep saying, just open your Bible.
- 11:18Don't just take my word for it. Look, read, fact check if you want to call it
- 11:22that. Ask questions, learn.
- 11:25How are we going to live this out? So how do we take Isaiah's vision of peace and actuality,
- 11:31and live it, right? Well, there's a couple of things. First,
- 11:34become a peacemaker. Is there unnecessary conflict in your life?
- 11:39Maybe there's somebody you've been avoiding. Maybe there's a conversation that needs to happen.
- 11:44Maybe there's an apology that needs to be made. That's number one.
- 11:47Number two, stop feeding division.
- 11:50Before sharing that angry post, before responding to that comment before jumping
- 11:56or joining the argument, ask, am I bringing peace or adding gasoline?
- 12:03Third, learn to disagree without dehumanization.
- 12:07Dehumanizing. Somebody can disagree with you and still deserve dignity.
- 12:14That's powerful. Somebody can disagree with you and still deserve dignity.
- 12:21And fourth, remember where true peace comes from.
- 12:25Peace isn't pretending problems don't exist. It allows Christ to shape the way
- 12:30we respond to them. So here's your faith challenge.
- 12:34I want you to think about one relationship where there is tension,
- 12:38nothing dangerous, nothing where healthy boundaries need to be ignored.
- 12:43Just somewhere that unnecessary distance, resentment or disagreement.
- 12:48Then I want you to ask God, is there a step toward peace that you want me to take?
- 12:53Maybe it's a phone call. Maybe it's a text. Maybe it's an apology.
- 12:58Maybe it's simply deciding that you don't need to win the argument anymore.
- 13:04And maybe reconciliation isn't impossible.
- 13:08And maybe it isn't possible right now.
- 13:12That's okay. You cannot control another person's response. But you can ask,
- 13:17God, am I doing my part to be a peacemaker?
- 13:20Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for your word. Thank you for...
- 13:25Just being you. And thank you for the fact that we can open scripture,
- 13:28ask questions and learn something, even discover that something we've believed
- 13:34for years wasn't written quite the way we remembered it.
- 13:38Give us humility when it happens. Make us students of the word, your word.
- 13:43Help us not simply repeat what you've heard or what we've heard.
- 13:47Teach us to read, to study, to understand.
- 13:52And Lord, thank you for Isaiah's beautiful vision of peace. Our world desperately needs peace right now.
- 13:58Our communities need peace. And our families need peace.
- 14:02And sometimes, our own hearts need peace.
- 14:06Jesus, Peace of Prince, begin with us.
- 14:10Where there is bitterness, bring healing. Where there is division, bring understanding.
- 14:16Where reconciliation is possible, give us courage to pursue it.
- 14:20And make us peacemakers in the world that has become very good at making enemies.
- 14:25May our lives point toward the day that when you make all things right.
- 14:30In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
- 14:32I'm getting a phone call. They can wait. They can wait.
- 14:38Let's go to the takeaway for today. Does the Bible say, this has probably happened
- 14:42in the first time in every nine years. The lion will lie down with the lamb.
- 14:47Not exactly. Isaiah 11, I lost my turn of thought. 11 verse six says,
- 14:53the wolf will live with the lamb.
- 14:55The lion appears too, but the famous pairing isn't what scripture actually says.
- 15:00But don't miss the bigger message. Isaiah is giving us a breathtaking vision of God's peace.
- 15:07Hostility ends. Enemies live together. Creation is restored.
- 15:12And God promises King reigns in the righteousness.
- 15:18So today's takeaway is this. Don't get so distracted correcting the animals
- 15:23that you miss the promise.
- 15:25God's story is moving toward restoration. And until that day,
- 15:30Jesus calls us to become peacemakers.
- 15:34This has been episode eight of Jesus Never Said That. a special series from
- 15:38Half Faith, Let It Begin. Remember, we have 10 episodes here.
- 15:42We have plenty more to go. And today's episode gives us another reminder that
- 15:47something can communicate a beautiful and biblical idea without actually being a Bible verse.
- 15:53Know the difference, open your Bible, read the context, and don't be afraid
- 15:57to discover something new.
- 16:00Next time on Have Faith, Let It Begin, Jesus Never Said That series,
- 16:04it's episode nine. We're two away from the end.
- 16:06We're tackling a phrase that sounds wonderful. God just wants you to be happy. Really?
- 16:12Does he? Now, God isn't against happiness. Never said that.
- 16:17Joy is all over scripture. But
- 16:20what happens when the thing that makes me happy takes me away from God?
- 16:25What happens when happiness and holiness point in a different direction?
- 16:30Does God want something deeper for us than simply feeling good?
- 16:34We're going in that direction. We're going there in episode nine because it's
- 16:39called God Just Wants You to Be Happy.
- 16:41And trust me, this conversation may challenge the way we think about what it
- 16:46actually means for God to want what's good for us.
- 16:49Next time on Jesus Never Said That.
- 16:52Because remember, it sounds good. It might even sound Christian,
- 16:56but is it actually biblical?
- 16:59Never forget, have faith, let it begin.
