- 1:04now it's Tom for today's episode of Pat Novak for Hire. Give envelope to
- 1:11John Saint John pat Novak. Higher sure, I'm Pat Novak for hire.
- 1:37H That's what the sign out in front of my office said, Pat Novak
- 1:56for Hire. Down on the water front of San Francisco. You don't get
- 2:00for being subtle. If you want to make a living down here, you've
- 2:02got to get your hand in the till anyway you can. You robbed Peter
- 2:07to pay Paul and then you put it on the cup. Oh. I
- 2:10rent the boats and fell a few white lies at the price is right.
- 2:14It's a happy life if you don't mind looking up at a headstone, because
- 2:16sooner or later you draw trouble a size too big. I found that out
- 2:22Tuesday night. It was ringing, when the street was as deserted as a
- 2:24warm bottle of beer. Must have been about eleven o'clock when I came out
- 2:29of the office and started down the waterfront. As I got me at the
- 2:32corner, I stopped, an old man stepped out of the darkness and started
- 2:37across the street. It was a short trip because a car started up down
- 2:40the street, and the old man couldn't have made it with a pocket full
- 2:43of ass. I started over to him. The car slowed down from it
- 2:51and turned the corner and disappeared. As it passed under the streetlight. I
- 2:53caught a glimpse of the license plate in a dull, surprised way, the
- 2:57way you'd grab a feather out of an eagle's wing. I got over the
- 3:00old man and rolled him on his back. He didn't seem to be in
- 3:02pain. With an old man with a fighting look of a small boy in
- 3:06a storm who was beating hard as I cussed his head. Please, can
- 3:12you please see me? Not the big order, mister, I must stop
- 3:17to If you've got any good coats, you better get him off your chest
- 3:21fast in my pocket, inside my pocket, you please put your head.
- 3:28Yeah, you're two envelopes, what about him? One is smuggy, so
- 3:34you you have the other one. So far's the other one? Please keep
- 3:40sealed and you will give it to John Saint John, John Saint John.
- 3:46Yeah, where does he live? Don't understand? It's not I want to
- 3:54tell you one. Mm hmm, you dog, that's turning. He was
- 4:02right on that one. I didn't understand a planing sift. He slipped out
- 4:05of my arms and stopped paying taxes. I dragged him over the side and
- 4:10I went through his stuff. There was nothing there, no identification, just
- 4:13a card was an address out on Hayte Street. I opened the envelope and
- 4:17three hundred dollars tumbled into my breast pocket. The other one was sealed.
- 4:21There was no name on it, but up in the corner there was some
- 4:25kind of marking. It looked like two crosses spliced together. There wasn'tything I
- 4:30could do for him except pray and I owe some back dues. So I
- 4:33went back to my office and call police headquarters. I told him where the
- 4:36old man was, and then I checked in the phone book. There was
- 4:41no John Saint John listed, but it wasn't going to be easy to find
- 4:45him, and I only had two leads, that license number and the address
- 4:47on h Street. So I look at the only honest guy I know,
- 4:51a next doctor in a boozer by the name of Jack o'madigan. A good
- 4:55guy, but to him, a hangover is the price of being sober.
- 4:58I finally found him singing Mason Street Bar today, Little rams it ever fit
- 5:08on? Hey, Jacko, I want to talk to you, Ah,
- 5:10Patsy, I'm just in time for the counterpoint. I'm singing this song,
- 5:15a little sentimental thing from my childhood, or a little keep I got a
- 5:18problem. You will always have a problem, Patsy, because you can't keep
- 5:21out of trouble. You know that, don't you? You have no self
- 5:26control? All right, Jacko, If you have no more self control than
- 5:29a bucket of mercury dumped on a marble staircase, all right, Now,
- 5:31shall we check the bright talk. I just saw a guy get killed.
- 5:34Oh you are like some violent disordering nature, some large but unprofitable storm.
- 5:41You keep whirling in circles, Patsy. If you ever go more than ten
- 5:44feet in one direction, it's because some woman is nine feet away. Then
- 5:47it begins all over again. Are you all through? Yes? Get to
- 5:53the point. That's another of your troubles. You never get to the point.
- 5:57I just saw a guy killed ten minutes ago. How would I introduced
- 6:00me? Are you selling an eyewitness account? Some old guy got killed down
- 6:03on the embarca Daryl and checked out fifteen feet away from him. Who killed
- 6:06him? I don't know. Why do you care? Professional jealousy? Some
- 6:12car came out of nowhere and clicked him. You sure it wasn't an accident?
- 6:15Yeah, just like the Berlin blockade when you stopped needing me, Jacko,
- 6:17I told you a guy got chilled. He was murdered right in front
- 6:18of me. I gotta find a guy called John, Saint John. How
- 6:23Saint John? John? Saint John. I don't feel like bad villa night,
- 6:26Jacko. The old man gave me three hundred dollars to deliver a letter,
- 6:28and I made him a promise. Well, you can break it now
- 6:30with only the slightest swiss. I got the license number of the car.
- 6:33I want you to hop down and look it up, and then check it
- 6:35headquarters to see if the guy's got a record when you I don't like policemen.
- 6:40They depressed me. Check it. I gotta go out to Hayte Street.
- 6:43What kind of neighborhood is it out there? Well, not exactly a
- 6:46neighborhood. It's more like an architectural afterthought, a lingering defense against the early
- 6:51California bear. All right, all right, no speeches. Just check on
- 6:55that license plate. Huh. Now, if I'm not at my place,
- 6:58try this address. Yes, it's always very interesting this time of night.
- 7:01Good night lover. Jocko was right about the neighborhood. When I left him,
- 7:17I doubled by my place and left the envelope. I put it inside
- 7:19another envelope and statched behind some books, and then I hit it out to
- 7:24looked up John Saint John. Oh. It must have been about midnight when
- 7:27I got there, and it was a kind of a neighborhood where a for
- 7:29rent sign reads like a ransom note. I found a place, though it
- 7:32was an old rooming house, a third floor apartment. I knocked at the
- 7:35door. When she opened it, I knew it was time to wire home
- 7:39for money. All blonde, blister with lots of fahrenheit. He stood bailinging
- 7:44against the door, smil looking at music. You had gold plated muscle.
- 7:47It gave you a weak feeling. Where your dinner out of bay and her
- 7:50voice came right out of the oven. Yeah, you had kind of lady.
- 7:55Yeah, I'm looking for a guy named John Saint John. Oh,
- 7:59why was it coming in? Then? My cop with sure for a spider
- 8:03You're nice and chilly, spider man. My name is the note you want
- 8:09to write it down. I'm Paton Novak. I'm looking for a guy named
- 8:13John Saint John. You seem to be running a temperature on the subject.
- 8:16Yeah, the couch you'll do. I'll bet you carry a rainy nurse pocket.
- 8:22All right, now, let's get out of the woods. Angel.
- 8:24I'm looking for a guy. I know you're wearing out a pair. I
- 8:26don't know what John sings. John. A dead man was carrying around your
- 8:28address. He was as Yeah, an old guy about sixty. He got
- 8:33killed crossing the street. You should have had a boys got in. I
- 8:35don't know anything about it, mister Novac, despite occasional temptation, I don't
- 8:39like sixty your own name. Well, he was looking around your address.
- 8:41Why, I don't know. Maybe he admired me from the fall, like
- 8:45the sunset or something. No, he stopped admiring sunsets about twenty years ago.
- 8:48I see, what are you? The avenging ange. He gave me
- 8:50a sealed envelope, and you were supposed to give it to a man named
- 8:54John thing John. That's right. He gave me three hundred bucks to ease
- 8:56the pain. I forged that you don't look like the chair. It was
- 9:01a nice little guy. So I'm gonna find his boy. Maybe I can
- 9:03help you. You've got a clear fast track. Let's so you go.
- 9:05I tell you I don't know John Jing John, but I'll do this.
- 9:07Yeah. I know you're gonna be big hearted and offer to take that letter
- 9:09just in case you ever meet someone named John. Saint John, you brought
- 9:13al on your crystal ball. You're hands shaking, baby. Maybe it's the
- 9:16wind. You need a handrail, friend, Yeah, what do you plan?
- 9:24I'm open minded the bottom m hm. You're a nice spider man.
- 9:31Yeah, the wind is getting a little worse, isn't it. Yeah,
- 9:37you should actually pist. I'm not. When I walked in, I could
- 9:41see you had both arms broken. Did you pay the rent this month?
- 9:45Keep the kettle on? How long to be a moment? Hello? Lake?
- 9:50If we're early, just give us some magazine. No, come on
- 9:52in, just enough for some bread. You're right, you're only gone for
- 9:56a moment. Or your friends out because they locked a manhole before they left
- 10:01home. Yeah, that's a pretty name. It don't rhyme with anything,
- 10:07but it's pretty, I Joe. Yeah, that's all right. Let's have
- 10:09the letter. Novak. You've got a hold of a bad rumor fellow,
- 10:11the one I got scored. Let's have it. I don't want to strain
- 10:15your mind, junior, but try to understand I don't have a letter at
- 10:16him again. Go on home, mister. You're not gonna get anything out
- 10:20of me. He's just a small tip. Now, if you're a good
- 10:20boy, I'll give you a nickel for your front and two. All right,
- 10:24jo hold him up? Yeah, he's gonna hold him up. Oh,
- 10:33i'd mind that. You know enough? All right? Baby, don't
- 10:41look so sorry. You can't have everything. It's easy to sleep if he
- 10:54got the White friends. When those two gun ups were through, I hit
- 10:56the floor and made rif fanlink and look like an INSU victim. I didn't
- 11:01like the floor, but it was in better shape than my face. I
- 11:03don't know how long I was there, but it must have been a couple
- 11:07of hours. I rode over once and tried to get up, but it
- 11:09was like trying to barbecue a cake of ice. It was a sick,
- 11:11sweet smell in a ROOMA I tried to place it, but my nose was
- 11:16out on strike, so I went to sleep again. The next thing I
- 11:18knew, it sounded like New Year's Eve. Here you go up on the
- 11:26couch. What's the matter Nothing, If you're you're a kitchen stove, the
- 11:31room's full of gas. Would open the window if you're going to turn on
- 11:35the gas. Some of my playmates, I guess, well, you went
- 11:41at the apartment, So I tried here. Yeah, what time is it?
- 11:45Two o'clock? Who got the queen idea of the gash chamber? The
- 11:48girlfriend who was love at first sight? I see, it's go home to
- 11:52bed. I'm getting used to floors. That old man started a ball name
- 11:56Jacko, but I mentioned John saying John of this girl's banker and brought him
- 12:00the gunsils. Did she get the letters? I left it at home.
- 12:03You're getting smart? Yeah, three hundred dollars worth. They looked at my
- 12:07dog. You couldn't have used it where you were going. Yeah, I've
- 12:11checked on that hit and run car. It's listed under the name of Sydney
- 12:15Bronson. Has he got a record? No, everybody's the beginner. Let's
- 12:20go home. Oh, it'll be there, but you'll get uced to it.
- 12:22Wait till I wash my hand. Yeah, go ahead, patch Yeah,
- 12:28what did you do if it looks like when she's a lively kink?
- 12:31Yeah? Why what's the matter because she's not anymore? Yeah? Those gunzels
- 12:39playing rough? She's kind of pretty. What did she do besides sending out
- 12:43vibrations? I don't know, but she knew what about John Saint John?
- 12:46Hey, she picked up a bait like a hungry bass And so look at
- 12:50that ring? How'd you get around to that and singing on it? The
- 12:54same one that's on that envelope splice crosses. Let's go home, Patchy.
- 12:58The police should be here. Yeah, even I know she's dead, Come
- 13:01on, we better go on your way. Out the doors. John,
- 13:05I'll try it sideways because I think it's a block. I don't know,
- 13:07Vac. You look pale. It's my color scheme. What do you carry?
- 13:09Helman? None? He looks peaceful. Yeah, I'll be quiet.
- 13:15You'll wake her up. I'll tip you always cut her throat before she goes
- 13:20to sleep. At leish you no, Vac, I don't know. It's
- 13:24a whole cozy here for a bunch of perfect strangers. I don't know every
- 13:26dead girl in town. Helman, you'll have to check. You didn't still
- 13:28right? Can't you know? Vac. That's all you'll need down the headquarters.
- 13:31Come on, get out of a haze. Helman. You don't know
- 13:33who's dead yet, but you're gonna bok somebody. Yeah, what are you
- 13:35doing up here? At praising the joint? I came up to find a
- 13:37guy named John, Saint John. He doesn't look like a guy named John
- 13:39Saint John. He was my lead. I came up here to smell out
- 13:41a rat. He had a half nelson. Only when two dentals walked in.
- 13:45They came up to fix the cash meter, and I think you stay
- 13:48out of it. I make every ye foot now if you're smut your fingerprint
- 13:50this place, Helman. These boys were cute. They've been in somebody's jail.
- 13:54I'll handle my job. You stick the murder and go a long way
- 13:56to pin this on me, Heilman, I can go a long way,
- 13:58no vac that what you've got to We'll get a call in the middle of
- 14:01the night. Come up here and find you standing over a dead girl's right,
- 14:03and you want me to sprinkle powder all over? Back up and take
- 14:05a better look, Novak hold if he was fine, Helmet, and if
- 14:07you'll take a good look, you'll know why you haven't got anything to give
- 14:09the the ah up a slow eating a fat hand. You're gonna need help
- 14:13none on this one. You need help to find the street. Come on
- 14:15back to center, Helmet. Even with both hands, you couldn't care forget
- 14:18it, So take the mette to like a good boy. I'm gonna walk
- 14:22out and let the two of you tour of the town. I'm gonna book
- 14:26one or both of you on a murder chart. All right, book jocko
- 14:28here then I love you in a generous mood. You got a stringer in
- 14:31Helman. Somebody's gotta find John Saint John, who's going to find Jocko.
- 14:35Stop worrying O, bit yell, you haven't got the right siass heart Novak,
- 14:39you'll let him die on the vine. Helman. Sometimes you're guilty of
- 14:43unexpected wisdom. I know it's reflakes at you, but it's consoling anyway.
- 14:46I want you, Novak, I want you bad. I'll take this guy's
- 14:50a down payment, but I'm going to close out with you. Remember that
- 14:52I will. All right, come on, mister, wait a minute,
- 14:56Petch. You're not going to let him lug me off like this? Else
- 15:00can I do? A guy likes you. But it was a bum curve
- 15:13to throw Jocko. But somebody had the biggest out of a hole. Jacko
- 15:16wasn't the boy. He can't shovel dirt with a bar rag Well. I
- 15:20had no idea where to start. There were two murders, and they were
- 15:22both tied up with this John, Saint John. He didn't look like a
- 15:26good guy to know. And there was that insignia too, the one on
- 15:28the letter and the one on the girl's ring. Sure it could be a
- 15:31coincidence, but that's what they said about Bluebeard. The only thing I could
- 15:35do was open that letter, So I went back to the apartment. I
- 15:39didn't have to turn on the light. They were running in pairs tonight.
- 15:43He was sitting there on the couch, proud of a pair of long silk
- 15:45legs and smiling like a guy who knows he's got a million bucks in the
- 15:48bank. She was blonde to a little more lemon juice maybe, but blonde
- 15:52anyway. She was nice and comfortable, and I got the ideas he'd just
- 15:56signed the lease. Good evening, How do you do? Went very well
- 16:02so far? A fly remarkless Novak. No, I'm just bringing up the
- 16:04date your girlfriend's dead. Yeah, yeah, the guest jets out in the
- 16:07kitchen it is I think that's supposed to be mysterious. You clear it up.
- 16:11Then find a name for yourself and the reason why you picked up my
- 16:14furniture. Oh do you mind living here? I just want to know your
- 16:18name before I throw you out in the hall. It's Novack. I'll bet
- 16:19you're rowfully slow when it comes to throwing somebody out in the hall. Now,
- 16:22if they can bounce as well as I figure you can when you do
- 16:25throw me out, throw the letter out too, all right. Now I've
- 16:27already had a dress rehearse an sways. No, at least I know where
- 16:30you stand. By the way, why are you standing? Can you sit
- 16:36down? Who's John Saint John? Don't be rid drumbant, mister news.
- 16:42Who is he? If you want that later you know him, don't shout.
- 16:45I'd like you better. I don't mean your vote. Who's John Saint
- 16:48John? I don't know him. You want that letter because your collect stamps
- 16:51I want? You'll have to take my word. I don't know John Saint
- 16:53John's worth breaking your heart over. Look, there's a good guy down and
- 16:57a clink sweating on a murder rapt for me, So I want John Saint
- 17:00John. You've got nice friends? Who Sidney Bunch? It started with a
- 17:04waterfront corpse. The leftovers belonged to an old guy that was hit by a
- 17:07car. The car is registered in the name of Sidney Bunceon, mister Novac,
- 17:11you seemed so intense. It's a picky. The waste is on random
- 17:14speculation. Now look, I told you, lady, I got a friend
- 17:17of the judg lyild is a nice race. One of you are nicest.
- 17:22Yeah, they're a pretty thing. Patsy, let's don't get food in the
- 17:26wrapper. Anybody ever brief you on trouble, Y'll have to see that far
- 17:33away, someone who's had to focus. Pat scene, No, you're pretty
- 17:40patsy. You don't think you have a better sale. I'm a juttle car
- 17:44now, vack. I'd just like to break your ribs. Yeah, I
- 17:48can get a brace. Come here, Eh, what's on your mind?
- 17:55What you're gonna say when you find out about this gun? Huh? That's
- 17:57right, sweetheart, And my finger isn't hollow. Back up and take a
- 18:00look at the gun you got to that person. That's right. You'll ruin
- 18:04my confidence. I'll give you a testimonial in the meantime. I want the
- 18:07letter. You go after everything the same way I want the letters in the
- 18:12desk. Come on right here in the time. I'm aorry here lady,
- 18:19all right, come on, let's throw my arms now that's your version?
- 18:26Tell me? Was that I was something in the house and I beat it?
- 18:37Yeah? You ruined my confidence. You're lucky going home. You want
- 18:42to change your mind about that letter? No, it's yourself. I'll be
- 18:47gun, okay. Yeah, I can't help you on John, thank song.
- 18:52I wouldn't worry about that, fellow, Sidney Bronson. Why because I'm
- 18:56Sidney Bronson, so you do. I let that one sink in for a
- 19:12minute, but it got about as far as my brain and ran out of
- 19:15gas. She wasn't driving at murdered car, otherwise she wouldn't get that Talkie
- 19:18began to look like a big back, well fed, double crossed, and
- 19:21John Saint John was holding up his end. I had to find out what
- 19:25was in that letter, so I made tracks for the bookcase. All I
- 19:26could do was browse because the letter was gone. Whoever took it didn't even
- 19:30leave a tip. I thought of the girl, but that didn't make sense,
- 19:33and I thought of John Saint John. That made a lot of sense.
- 19:36Things didn't look rosy for me or JACKO. I was about to buy
- 19:38a file and bake a cake when the phone ended. Yeah, hello know
- 19:42that, Oh hellman the corner. I got a report on that dead girl.
- 19:45He got at twelve thirty. That's pretty close. What's he got to
- 19:48stop watching? Fifteen minutes? Either way? Those fingerprints panned out too.
- 19:52Yeah, a couple of Las strong on men. Well that's new for La.
- 19:56You got to call out. We already picked him up your favorite name.
- 19:59Welcome danglers. I could make a joke. I already got one.
- 20:03It set up with a privy gallop life of twelve thirty. That means I
- 20:04killed a girl. Nobody's arguing. I got some more news. Yeah,
- 20:11I'm out of seal rock. You got the figure for it. We just
- 20:14found an envelope floating around the water. It's one of yours. You better
- 20:18come on out to find an envelope. So much all the envelope turns out
- 20:21to be in some guy's pocket, come on out. Well, I don't
- 20:33emember one thing. Whoever took that envelope out of my place got popular.
- 20:37It was getting late, so I grabbed the cabin rode out to the beach.
- 20:38When I got there, Helman was standing down near the water. He
- 20:41had Jacko with him. The surf was rolling in and Jacko wasn't much better.
- 20:45Hell no, I had jackohas jail right. Thanks for coming, Novak,
- 20:49you're sweet. Where's the envelope? Yeah? Yeah, the same one
- 20:53that makes you look good. There was a letter in here. Did you
- 20:56take that with a guy's money? Helman? You got all there is.
- 21:00This guy on the beach is a third one. It's my opinion. The
- 21:03kiswel sorbyself. We're running out of people. Who is the guy named Walder
- 21:07Avery? Is this stuff? Yeah? What's left? Well? The splice
- 21:11cross really gets around. It keeps bobbing up here. It is on the
- 21:15guy's fountain pen. I'm gonna run this guy through the Morgan and I'm gonna
- 21:18look you up Novak. Yeah, sure, we want you down with us.
- 21:22Night right, Patchy, I'll introduce you to all the best people.
- 21:26Good night's lover. It was close to five, so I tagged by my
- 21:37place for some sleep. I tossed around like a fish on a living room
- 21:41rug. Hellman called about nine to throw more dust in my eyes. He
- 21:45said one of the airlines had a passenger to Portland named Walder Avery. Just
- 21:48to make it tough, the guy made the twelve o'clock plane and got off
- 21:51at Portland. I had left Field all to myself. I got dressed and
- 21:55looked up Sidney Bronson's number. There was no answer, so I went over.
- 21:59The place was lit, and I looked up the janitor. He wasn't
- 22:00gonna let me in, but it turned out his wife had a birthday coming
- 22:03up. Sydney's apartment was real high powered. I don't know where she got
- 22:07the dough, but I knew I wasn't gonna find a tin cup and pencil,
- 22:11But I found it was lots better a card with that same insignia that
- 22:14splice crossed. The card said Belcrest Sanitarium, and down in the corner there
- 22:18was a guy's name, doctor Amol Shoney, psychiatrist Vienna without the walls.
- 22:23The belcrests Sanitarium was down near San Carlos. So I borrowed a new nash
- 22:27from a guy I know and hit it down that way. Everything was fine,
- 22:30and until I got in the front door, they didn't even let me
- 22:33register. I woke up on a couch in Schoenegg's office. Was dark outside.
- 22:51In my left arm was throbbing like a love story in a woman's magazine.
- 22:53The radiator sitting next to me was Sydney, you're a deep sleeper.
- 22:59I think I got help. What happened in my arm? Hypodermic You only
- 23:04need one arm anyway. In your case, I need a spare. Who
- 23:07did it? Doctor Shoning? He's a darling boy. Where is he out
- 23:11on the phone trying to figure out what to do with you? What's that
- 23:15making me a patient? That's one way of putting it. You made things
- 23:18easy. We were coming to you for the letter. You want to turn
- 23:22it over again. We were on our way when you stumbled in. You're
- 23:23wrong, I said, somebody's giving you a fast pitch. That letter was
- 23:26gone when you were up at my place. I don't want to bum rip,
- 23:29Patsy. I want that letter. You're trailing a field angel. I
- 23:30told you the letter's gone. My guy the name of Waller Ravery took it
- 23:33out of my place. Wall Aravery, that's right, and somebody thanked him.
- 23:37They found him this morning, making like a dead seal. Well her
- 23:40Avery left for Portland's last night. Oh Peah, sweetheart, you better read
- 23:42up on your friends. Yeah, thanks, Patsy. I told you you
- 23:49had more shots. What's the difference and none? I suppose? Why don't
- 23:53you mix this a drink while I talked to mister Novak, I'll be right
- 23:56with you and miss Novako, one of my best patients is because I like
- 24:02your needles. You better go easy on that drink. He is you'll get
- 24:07drunk and run somebody down. And when you did that guy in the waterfront.
- 24:08Oh a book gays. You should be proud. That's a good,
- 24:14sensible final emotion. Thank you, my dear. He's to mister Novak.
- 24:21Sorry, there's no degreeing for you, mister Novak, and you probably will
- 24:23me. Huh, forget it, Emil. I talked to mister Novak before
- 24:26you came in. He thinks you're a heel. He does so I can
- 24:30stand it. He told me about water Avery. I'm be sorry about that.
- 24:34Walter got that letter. You killed him and took it. I was
- 24:37supposed to buner around and you got rid of me too. That's a bump
- 24:41joke. Amo, you're getting hysterical laughter. Amo, you put one of
- 24:45your boys on that plane, only Novak air. The w wash too fast,
- 24:48I did. Nobody has to bring you up to Dake Sydney. You've
- 24:51been hanging on Polong free right over. Must as well tell you now you
- 24:56are true. I can't the whole bunker look at it and true scary amles.
- 25:02What's the matter with me? What's the matter with me? Give my
- 25:07hand now, Jack, you just had a bad drink. You wouldn't do
- 25:10that. I'm full of surprises. You got a stemmard full of poison.
- 25:12You got a stoma full of poison. Fifteen second table that I want you
- 25:18to Three had the gun, I would It's happened kind of fast. Four
- 25:29of us. What's the moise. Yeah, I'll get your pillow. I'd
- 25:40rather have your ma. You get mercy, not love baby. Thanks for
- 25:45small favors. I know that's so good. That was the three and two
- 25:52pitch. Yeah, I had it coming up. I'll tell you about John,
- 25:56say Joe, I know there was no sense, that's right. It
- 26:00was the name of the group those Splice Crosses found out a little late.
- 26:07Only that way w I found out about you. Yeah, I had a
- 26:14funny bunch about you. A name found out a little late. I know
- 26:21now that day is that help? John? Saint John was the name of
- 26:49an organization buying and selling government information. That old man tried to tell me,
- 26:53but he checked out too fast. I began to figure something like that
- 26:57when those Splice Crosses showing up. Shoenig killed the old man in Sydney's car.
- 27:03He couldn't stop because I was around. The two girls and Walter Avery
- 27:07were both in on the deal. Shoenik knew who I was when he saw
- 27:11me go into my office. He tailed me to my place and left Avery
- 27:15there to look for the letter. He killed that girl up in the rooming
- 27:18house, and the found out she didn't have the letter. When Avery showed
- 27:22up, he took it away from him and threw him to the fish SHOONI
- 27:26was trying to shake Sydney by sending her up to my place after he had
- 27:30the letter. The scheme went heywire when I showed up at the sanitarium.
- 27:34He was trying to work himself out of that one when the payoff came.
- 27:40John Saint John all right. From the start. Jacko said he was either
- 27:44dead or in the state pen, because anybody with a name like John Saint
- 27:47John would have killed his parents as soon as he got old enough to find
- 27:49out about It worked out all right. They found the letter out at Schoenig's
- 27:55place. There were some plans for guided missiles and a few other trifles.
- 28:02Helen asked only one question, how come Shoany didn't kill me before I could
- 28:06talk to the girl. That's always that way with the guy who commits murder.
- 28:10Either he goes too far or he doesn't go far enough. The arm
- 29:08Pausis Radio Service has just brought you pat Novak for Hire, starring Jack Webb.
- 29:15At Novak is produced by William V. Russol. Jock O Madighan is
- 29:18played by Fudor Owen. Inspector Herman is played by Raymond Burke. Music was
- 29:22composed and conductors by Lasso Wesson. Leave with us again next week when over
- 29:26most of these same stations, we don't bring you at Novak Ohio at Novak
- 29:36for Hire was previously released by ABC, the American Broadcasting Company for listeners in
- 29:41the United States and rebroadcast for our men and women overseas. This is the
- 29:45United States arm PAUSES Radio Service, the Voice of Information and Education. Welcome
- 30:45back. Well, Uh, this episode I think showed a little bit of
- 30:49variety. First, there was the early stage at which Jocko came in,
- 30:56and this episode Novak is a lot less mercenary focused, and you do kind
- 31:02of see the better warmer side of Novak in this episode, even though he
- 31:07is, you know, still pretty typical in the ending, a little bit
- 31:11a typical just because Hellman wasn't there. So I do appreciate that the little
- 31:15ways they mixed it up. Well. We have an email from Joel regarding
- 31:21this series. He says, I continue to struggle with this program. Every
- 31:25episode is a carbon copy of every other, and Novak gets beaten so many
- 31:30times for a tough guy. You have to wonder was this show a success?
- 31:37Good question, and it does kind of depend on how you define it.
- 31:41The series was extremely popular in its West Coast run. Indeed, that's
- 31:48something that I was actually able to confirm from a nineteen forty nine Billboard magazine.
- 31:56That's that's why they were even considered bringing this to the nationwide audience was
- 32:04because of its success. I have not been able to find any ratings records.
- 32:09ABC was always a network that really struggled in the ratings department, but
- 32:15also could trust some interesting ideas, such as Pat Novac for hire. I
- 32:20will say that the West Coast version of the show was enough to really get
- 32:27Jack Webb's career off the ground. In fact, he actually was signed by
- 32:31Mutual to do a series that was so much like Pat Novac in its original
- 32:37inception that it led to a threat of a suit by ABC for copyright infringement.
- 32:46By nineteen forty nine, ABC decided to bring Jack Webb back and take
- 32:52the show nationwide. So it had some success, and I think the Mutual
- 32:58Program of Johnny Madera shows the level of that success. After all, as
- 33:04they say, imitation was sincerest form of flattery. This was not a show
- 33:07I think that was ever going to last. And it probably is a bit
- 33:12more in terms of radio programs, a bit more of a cult classic,
- 33:15an acquired taste that not everybody has. And I can definitely appreciate that,
- 33:21and that's why we have programs on six days a week with six different shows.
- 33:25But I appreciate you emailing and your support of the program. All right,
- 33:31some listener comments and feedback from Canada. Keiky Katz says favorite podcast he
- 33:39must hear for anyone who loves old radio. Adam Graham is becoming a great
- 33:45host who does his research and passes on interesting facts on the episodes, their
- 33:49air dates and how society was in that era. Very well planned and organized.
- 33:53And then this from Bear Stearn's excellent podcast, interesting and entertaining material and
- 34:00great quality recordings. Awesome that the shows are in sequence makers of all the
- 34:06show makes the shows all that more enjoyable. Great host, also fantastic work.
- 34:12Thank you well, thank you so much. I do appreciate your con
- 34:15comments and that will do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with
- 34:21the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, and then listen back to us again next Tuesday
- 34:25another episode of Patnovack for Hire. In the meantime, send your comments to
