Latest / Foul Territory / Arte Moreno era is OVER! Stan Kroenke buys Angels, Fans boo Ketel Marte, M’s rock bottom, 3HR Bregman

- 0:03Speaker 1: This is big FT breaking news. Stan Kroenke, who owns
- 0:08Speaker 1: a ton of teams, now owns another one. It's the Angels.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Artie Moreno is out of baseball. Yes, it will be
- 0:15Speaker 1: official in the first quarter of 2027 if it goes
- 0:18Speaker 1: through the necessary approvals. Artie owned the team for 23 years.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Kroenke owns the Nuggets. He owns the Avs. He owns
- 0:25Speaker 1: the LA Rams. He helped develop SoFi Stadium out there.
- 0:28Speaker 1: He owns a piece of Arsenal. I mean, he owns
- 0:31Speaker 1: a lot of sports teams. And Angels fans for a
- 0:34Speaker 1: couple decades, AJ, were in anybody but Artie mode. And
- 0:38Speaker 1: your wish has been granted. We didn't even get a
- 0:40Speaker 1: little teaser, a little warning on this one. Artie put
- 0:42Speaker 1: the team up for sale years ago and then swiped
- 0:44Speaker 1: it back. This was not a very public process. They
- 0:47Speaker 1: kept this very under wraps.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Can I just ask a question? We had Ken on.
- 0:51Speaker 2: How come Ken didn't know about this? I'm mad at Ken.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Oh, that's where you're going to start.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm going to yell at Ken for this for not
- 0:57Speaker 2: knowing that this was going to– not even getting a
- 0:59Speaker 2: phone call.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Nobody knew about this. Nobody reported this.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I know, but Ken's supposed to be our senior insider.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Ken, do better.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But, I mean, this came out of nowhere. It was amazing.
- 1:09Speaker 2: And Angels fans, rejoice. It's rejoice time. If you're an
- 1:12Speaker 2: Angels fan, the Artie Moreno experience is done. And if
- 1:16Speaker 2: you look at the teams he owns– They've had a
- 1:18Speaker 2: long history of success, and I would think Stan Kroenke
- 1:22Speaker 2: wants to bring that to the Angels. So maybe they'll
- 1:25Speaker 2: make some adjustments and actually try to start winning instead
- 1:28Speaker 2: of just saying, we have Mike Trout, the fans will
- 1:30Speaker 2: show up.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Or a word of advice, Kratz, you should say that
- 1:33Speaker 1: winning is important to fans and it's not like fifth
- 1:36Speaker 1: or sixth on the list or whatever that quote was
- 1:39Speaker 1: from earlier in the season that most people tried to
- 1:41Speaker 1: wipe out of their head. Remember the anonymous survey? You
- 1:46Speaker 1: don't remember that?
- 1:47Speaker 3: What? That was the fans that said that. The fans
- 1:50Speaker 3: said winning is not that important. That's what Artie told us.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So how could that be wrong?
- 1:57Speaker 1: The survey says, family feud. Angels fans don't care about winning. Joking.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Angels fans care about winning. This should be like a
- 2:05Speaker 1: holiday in Orange County. I'm serious. Like, guys, I'm not
- 2:09Speaker 1: going to sugarcoat it because I never sugarcoated it in
- 2:12Speaker 1: the last four years of this show. This is not
- 2:14Speaker 1: a good owner. You can get into the nitty-gritty details,
- 2:17Speaker 1: but overall, this has been a supremely unsuccessful franchise to
- 2:22Speaker 1: the highest degree. You had Otani. You had Trout. You
- 2:25Speaker 1: haven't touched the playoffs in a while. Most years are
- 2:27Speaker 1: completely non-competitive. Kratz, you spent a little bit of time
- 2:31Speaker 1: in that organization. They're so far behind, and the reasoning
- 2:35Speaker 1: most of the time was pretty simple. Artie said no.
- 2:39Speaker 1: You just can't do that. And it's not even like
- 2:41Speaker 1: they're the lowest spending team in baseball. But some of
- 2:44Speaker 1: the basics that every other major league club had was
- 2:47Speaker 1: not given to Angels players over time. Or it just
- 2:49Speaker 1: was chaotic. One-year contracts for managers, a different coach for,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you know, Logan Ohapi we talked about the other day.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Different catching coaches, different pitching coaches. GM always feeling like
- 3:00Speaker 1: he's a phone call away from being let go. Just
- 3:03Speaker 1: so much BS for so many years. And you just
- 3:07Speaker 1: look over to the Dodgers and They're going through some
- 3:10Speaker 1: shadiness with the federal investigation, but in terms of how
- 3:13Speaker 1: their operation is run, you could not be more different.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Spot on. Spot on. I think part of this is
- 3:26Speaker 3: his inability or unwillingness to spend in the minor leagues.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Nobody's going to fault him. He's paying $ 400 million to
- 3:34Speaker 3: who was the best player in the game, Mike Trout.
- 3:37Speaker 3: He went out and spent a ton of money on
- 3:39Speaker 3: Anthony Rendon. He went out and spent money on plenty
- 3:43Speaker 3: of really good players that didn't pan out, and we
- 3:46Speaker 3: can question all that, but the core basics of a
- 3:50Speaker 3: big league team to have success year in and year
- 3:53Speaker 3: out when you have two of the best players in
- 3:55Speaker 3: the game was not there. It was not there, and
- 3:59Speaker 3: it was because this owner, Artie Moreno, wanted to be
- 4:05Speaker 3: part of a process that he wasn't good at and
- 4:08Speaker 3: wouldn't rescind responsibility to that.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Way too many policies and issues and what we had
- 4:18Speaker 1: the air conditioning that Kikuchi called out last year.
- 4:24Speaker 3: He doesn't wait room.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm not saying that unless there's a problem.
- 4:28Speaker 3: The weight room at spring training was a tent. Other organizations,
- 4:33Speaker 3: they come in to try to help and fix them.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You get a, hey, we need to do this in
- 4:38Speaker 3: the minor leagues. Nah, we're just not going to put
- 4:40Speaker 3: money in the minor leagues. They have less coaches at
- 4:44Speaker 3: each level in the minor leagues. There's so many things
- 4:48Speaker 3: that are like tiny little investments that go a long way,
- 4:54Speaker 3: not willing to go about it, not willing to get
- 4:57Speaker 3: out of the way.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We're not talking about, oh, he didn't invest billions of dollars.
- 5:00Speaker 1: These would be like the nitpicking items. Like, hey, every
- 5:05Speaker 1: team has this. Can we do this?
- 5:07Speaker 3: No.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Rejected. The name of the book someday for Artie Moreno's
- 5:11Speaker 1: tenure is going to be The Weight Room Was a Tent.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And then you're going to open the page and the
- 5:16Speaker 1: first page is going to say, but it was actually
- 5:18Speaker 1: cooler in there than the weight room.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Like, this is true. This isn't like, oh, he sold it,
- 5:28Speaker 1: now let's go. We've been talking about this for a
- 5:31Speaker 1: long time, and it sucks for Angels fans because they
- 5:34Speaker 1: get to watch a star player here in their A.J.,
- 5:36Speaker 1: but they never actually put a winning product together for
- 5:39Speaker 1: a long time, and there's no reason why they shouldn't
- 5:43Speaker 1: be good.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I feel bad.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Like the Jay Cuda tweet said, I was in the
- 5:47Speaker 2: playoffs more recently than Mike Trout was, and that is
- 5:49Speaker 2: sad for Mike Trout.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It's sad for Angel fans. I know Angel fans don't
- 5:53Speaker 2: like me very much, but it's sad. It is sad
- 5:55Speaker 2: for Angel fans. And it's sad for Mike Trout, the
- 5:58Speaker 2: fact that he hasn't had a legitimate chance to make
- 6:00Speaker 2: a deep run in the postseason. I think Angel fans
- 6:03Speaker 2: should be excited because anybody that buys a company, doesn't
- 6:07Speaker 2: matter what your company that you're buying, you want to
- 6:09Speaker 2: go in and be like, well, I see added value here.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I see I can add value here. What am I
- 6:14Speaker 2: adding to this? Not just, I'm going to sink some
- 6:16Speaker 2: money into it and hope it works. Like there's so
- 6:18Speaker 2: much value.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Added value investment in the Angels because of the deficiencies
- 6:25Speaker 3: that Artie Moreno was leaving throughout this organization that you're
- 6:30Speaker 3: just going to automatically see just a boop, boop, boop.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Like just with effort, you're going to see incremental increases
- 6:38Speaker 3: in this organization.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Number one winner in this, of course, is fans, right?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Fans have been beyond pissed for a long time. close
- 6:50Speaker 1: to the top should be Mike Trout, AJ. I mean,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I know he's late stage of career, but things can
- 6:56Speaker 1: change pretty quickly, right? Some of those, some of those
- 6:59Speaker 1: rejections become a yes. Hey, can we sign a manager
- 7:02Speaker 1: to multiple years? Can we spend more on baseball apps?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Can we spend more on team facilities, et cetera? Like
- 7:09Speaker 1: that can get turned around instantly. Cronky is going to
- 7:12Speaker 1: show up and probably do that for the jump. I'm
- 7:14Speaker 1: not going to act like I know a ton about him.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I know the name I've seen him or obviously in
- 7:17Speaker 1: headlines for, all of the teams he's involved with. But
- 7:22Speaker 1: at the end of the day, fans care about wins
- 7:23Speaker 1: and losses. And the guy who's taking over is much
- 7:26Speaker 1: more successful in his ventures.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Kroenke owns the Rams, won a Super Bowl recently, owns
- 7:31Speaker 2: the Nuggets, won an NBA championship recently, owns the Avalanche,
- 7:35Speaker 2: won a Stanley Cup somewhat recently. And last but not least,
- 7:39Speaker 2: he owns the Arsenal of the Premier League. And they're
- 7:42Speaker 2: pretty good. And I think they won the Premier League
- 7:44Speaker 2: last year. So Usually he puts together a team that's
- 7:47Speaker 2: trying to win. He's not exactly trying to go out
- 7:50Speaker 2: there and just do nothing. He wants to win and
- 7:52Speaker 2: he's been pretty effective at it.
- 7:56Speaker 1: You know, Artie Moreno in 2022 put the team up
- 8:00Speaker 1: for sale and then he, he brought it back in
- 8:03Speaker 1: and people were like, no, um, he did do an
- 8:06Speaker 1: interview in 2023 with sports illustrate and he said his
- 8:10Speaker 1: decision to, um, put the angels up for sale and
- 8:14Speaker 1: then take them back. I'm trying to find where it was.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It was, let's see, pull the plug on any potential
- 8:20Speaker 1: deal five months later when he announced he would retain
- 8:23Speaker 1: ownership of the team.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Now what's the number? What's the number?
- 8:28Speaker 1: We don't know the number yet. You're watching this now.
- 8:30Speaker 1: By the time we do our next segment on it,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you'll get the number. Although Bob Nightingale said record breaking
- 8:34Speaker 1: number and also Forbes had them valued at $ 2. 8 billion.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So it would have to be above where are the,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Where was the Padres?
- 8:43Speaker 3: 3.89 or 3.9? No, no.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Was it that high, the Padres?
- 8:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I mean, we're doing this breaking news as we go here,
- 8:53Speaker 1: so everybody bear with us.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, double check for me, but.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure. You're right, 3.9 billion. So if it
- 9:02Speaker 1: is record-breaking, we're talking probably four plus. Now, it might
- 9:07Speaker 1: not be. Maybe he's talking record-breaking for the Angels or
- 9:09Speaker 1: some other kind of record, but that would be.
- 9:13Speaker 2: But the franchise values are going down. Listen to the owners.
- 9:17Speaker 2: The franchise values are going down, guys. Stop. Stop sending
- 9:21Speaker 2: a false narrative. They're all going down. The franchise values
- 9:25Speaker 2: are all going down.
- 9:27Speaker 1: None of the teams can afford anything.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Wait, but did you see? What was it? Oh, some
- 9:33Speaker 1: people were saying, oh, well, the Padres, that's an outlier sale. Again,
- 9:37Speaker 1: let's see what the number ends up being. But I
- 9:39Speaker 1: bet you it's a good number. We didn't even have.
- 9:41Speaker 3: A formal bidding process. Stop following owner's burner's account, Scott.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Stop following owner's second and third Twitter burner accounts.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's hard for me to tell when it says owner
- 9:55Speaker 1: burner account underscore 2389. Nope.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Shakin said more than 3.9.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So, hey, Forbes 2.8. It's a little higher. Now, this
- 10:11Speaker 1: is where things, you know, they try and look at
- 10:13Speaker 1: revenue and other numbers and crunch it. It doesn't matter.
- 10:16Speaker 1: The market tells you how much this asset's worth.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I want to own a team so bad. Can someone
- 10:21Speaker 2: get me in touch with someone that can help me
- 10:23Speaker 2: own a team?
- 10:24Speaker 1: That's a different video that we'll do one day. A
- 10:27Speaker 1: different segment. But this is groundbreaking. We are going to
- 10:32Speaker 1: cover more of this when we get more details. John
- 10:34Speaker 1: Vizelak has an interesting little opportunity to stay on and
- 10:38Speaker 1: work for someone who is more competent in terms of
- 10:41Speaker 1: running a franchise. That is helpful.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Maybe this is why Kurt Suzuki only signed a one-year
- 10:45Speaker 2: deal because he knew they were being sold and just
- 10:47Speaker 2: didn't tell anybody.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. There were rumors that some owners were loading up
- 10:56Speaker 1: to sell right after the lockout. This actually gives you
- 11:00Speaker 1: a little bit of insurance, right? Because if you're an
- 11:02Speaker 1: owner and you sell after the lockout and there's a
- 11:05Speaker 1: salary cap, your team is automatically going to be worth
- 11:07Speaker 1: more because you're going to bring costs down of player salaries.
- 11:10Speaker 1: That's a fact, right? In this case, if you're Artie Moreno,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you got a deal that's so good, you're like, screw it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I don't need to be involved with this. And actually,
- 11:17Speaker 1: when it comes to a lockout in a CBA, the
- 11:19Speaker 1: more new owners you bring in, the more no votes
- 11:22Speaker 1: you're going to get to continue a work stoppage. Think
- 11:25Speaker 1: about that. That's next level thinking right there. You're a
- 11:27Speaker 1: new owner. You're voting a little bit differently from Artie Moreno.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And I did a lot of research on the last
- 11:33Speaker 1: time we had a lockout, plus the last time we
- 11:34Speaker 1: had the COVID situation and all of that. And Artie
- 11:37Speaker 1: certainly was down to just chill for a while. I
- 11:39Speaker 1: don't think the new owners are going to be like that.
- 11:40Speaker 1: They're going to want to play ball. That's a good
- 11:42Speaker 1: thing for all of us. Much more on this as
- 11:46Speaker 1: we learn more. But we'll be right back. Kratz, I
- 11:50Speaker 1: think what people are seeing on the screen and what
- 11:52Speaker 1: we'll explain to the podcast audio crowd right now is
- 11:55Speaker 1: how I'm a little summer action with Fabletics. And then
- 11:58Speaker 1: you take us into fall and a little more layering.
- 12:01Speaker 3: And here in the east, I'm still going to go
- 12:03Speaker 3: to the shore in the fall. I love the shore
- 12:05Speaker 3: in September. You come in from the beach. You throw
- 12:08Speaker 3: on a sweatshirt like this. It's light. It's breathable. But
- 12:11Speaker 3: you know what? It is so comfortable.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And for me, I... Love working out, but also I'm
- 12:17Speaker 1: getting more into tennis, paddle, a little bit of pickleball,
- 12:20Speaker 1: all that. I want lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and affordable. Let's
- 12:25Speaker 1: talk about that. The discounts for Fabletics are massive when
- 12:29Speaker 1: you sign up as a VIP. Shop now at fabletics.com
- 12:32Speaker 1: slash foul to get 70% to 80% off everything. When
- 12:36Speaker 1: you sign up as a new VIP, take a quick
- 12:38Speaker 1: style quiz. Be sure to select foul when prompted to

- 12:43Speaker 1: don't wait. Again, that's fabletics.com slash foul for 70% to 80%
- 12:48Speaker 1: off everything as a new VIP. Incredible catch last night.
- 12:52Speaker 1: That was special from Colton Couser. And the timing and
- 12:56Speaker 1: the clutchness.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It was.
- 12:59Speaker 2: It's not quite Dwayne-wise in Burley's perfect game, but it
- 13:02Speaker 2: was pretty close. I mean, how can you ever compare
- 13:09Speaker 2: the two? Well, no, I'm saying it was pretty awesome, though.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Hey, read that.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Jake McCarthy's bid for a walk-off homer when an estimated
- 13:21Speaker 3: 425 feet but ended up in Colton Couser's glove to
- 13:24Speaker 3: end the game. It's the longest distance of a game-ending
- 13:27Speaker 3: robbery of a potential walk-off home run in Major League
- 13:31Speaker 3: Baseball's wildcard era since 1995. Like, that's... We're talking over
- 13:38Speaker 3: 20 years. No, I'm sorry, 30 years. I did my
- 13:41Speaker 3: math wrong. 31 years. Like, I don't understand how– yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 3: that is catch of the year. Has to be catch
- 13:50Speaker 3: of the year. Especially if they were going to make
- 13:53Speaker 3: it in the playoffs.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Yeah, OptiStats helping us out. I mean, that is a direct–
- 13:58Speaker 1: this goes over the wall, game over. That's a war.
- 14:02Speaker 1: That's a defensive run save. That's two defensive runs saved
- 14:05Speaker 1: right there.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Boom. His defensive run save just went up by two automatically.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I don't know what Stats said, but I'm counting it. So,
- 14:11Speaker 2: Colton Cousins, congratulations. You just got two extra– Whatever that
- 14:14Speaker 2: pays you, two extra million dollars for those two runs
- 14:16Speaker 2: you saved. And if they do make the playoffs, should
- 14:20Speaker 2: be more runs saved.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You won the game.
- 14:26Speaker 3: That's a win. That's a game saved. How about that?
- 14:29Speaker 3: How about that stat?
- 14:30Speaker 2: That's a war. That's a war right there.
- 14:32Speaker 3: That's a war.
- 14:40Speaker 1: We're charging the mound on Cattell Marte apology. postgame really here, right?
- 14:46Speaker 1: The aftermath of what he said to fans or the media,
- 14:50Speaker 1: what he said to his team. Let's first start with Quetel.
- 14:54Speaker 1: We got a quick clip here. We'll get to some
- 14:55Speaker 1: longer clips, including Tori Lavello's reaction. But let's start with
- 14:59Speaker 1: Quetel Marte and a quick apology note.
- 15:03Speaker 5: All right, so that's the quick clip of Them asking
- 15:14Speaker 5: him if he had an apology or anything to say
- 15:17Speaker 5: to fans, and he just shook his head no.
- 15:19Speaker 1: There was some dissension online if he understood the question.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And whether he did or didn't, he did try to
- 15:27Speaker 1: clear things up post-game. He said, I didn't really quite
- 15:31Speaker 1: understand the word that was used at that moment. I'm
- 15:33Speaker 1: never going to stop loving my fans. Let's start with
- 15:37Speaker 1: the headliner here, AJ. He was booed. by an Arizona crowd.
- 15:41Speaker 1: That's usually pretty chill and nice. He was booed heavily.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Tori Lovello, his manager was not surprised, but concerned given
- 15:49Speaker 1: how he is a sensitive guy.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Okay. I mean, you want to know how not to
- 15:56Speaker 2: get booed, show up to the games and be there
- 16:00Speaker 2: for your team and be there for your teammate. I mean, what, what, what,
- 16:03Speaker 2: what I'm, I don't even know what to say about
- 16:06Speaker 2: this anymore because it's all been said. Nobody knows what
- 16:09Speaker 2: really happened. There's been so many bits and pieces. By
- 16:13Speaker 2: the way, you know who asked that question? It was
- 16:15Speaker 2: our old friend Derek. Remember Derek? We used to have
- 16:16Speaker 2: Derek on from, I forget what show he does out
- 16:19Speaker 2: in Arizona. But he's the one that asked the question.
- 16:22Speaker 2: He said, do you have any message for the fans?
- 16:25Speaker 2: And Cattell Marte was like, no. Now, you can argue
- 16:28Speaker 2: whatever you want to argue as far as the translation is.
- 16:32Speaker 2: But if you don't understand the question, for me, I'm saying, wait,
- 16:34Speaker 2: can you repeat that question? Or you look at the
- 16:36Speaker 2: translator and say, can you repeat the question? And you
- 16:40Speaker 2: say no, guess what? You're going to get booed by
- 16:43Speaker 2: the fans if you say you don't have a message
- 16:45Speaker 2: for the fans.
- 16:47Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 16:49Speaker 2: And I think Quetel Marte is one hell of a player, okay?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Someone's giving him bad advice somewhere along the way, whether
- 16:54Speaker 2: it's his agent, his friends, whoever. Someone is giving him
- 16:58Speaker 2: bad advice because when he went up to that stage,
- 17:01Speaker 2: he should have been as remorseful as humanly possible. And
- 17:04Speaker 2: everyone online is saying his body language wasn't remorseful. His
- 17:07Speaker 2: body language was just kind of like, why am I here? Okay,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I can't answer that, but I know this. I can
- 17:12Speaker 2: only speak for myself. And if I was put in
- 17:14Speaker 2: this situation and I missed a game and this isn't
- 17:17Speaker 2: the first time, I just haven't shown up to a game.
- 17:21Speaker 2: And I get called out on it and I have
- 17:23Speaker 2: to talk about it. And I'm really sorry for doing it.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I mean, I am so sorry. I cannot believe I
- 17:31Speaker 2: did this. I won't let it happen again. And honestly,
- 17:34Speaker 2: there just wasn't that remorse. Is that the right word?
- 17:38Speaker 2: There wasn't that sorrowfulness. I don't know what the word,
- 17:41Speaker 2: the proper terminology is. But just people that were there
- 17:44Speaker 2: just said it was kind of like it was almost
- 17:46Speaker 2: like the Marshawn Lynch. I'm just here so I don't
- 17:48Speaker 2: get fined.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And now what I want to know is what did
- 17:50Speaker 2: he say to his teammates? Which, of course, everyone's going
- 17:52Speaker 2: to say it stays in house. But was he remorseful
- 17:55Speaker 2: when he talked to his teammates? Because after the game,
- 17:57Speaker 2: his teammates were like, yeah, he's back. Cool. Right. And
- 17:59Speaker 2: they were all cheering for him. So what did he
- 18:01Speaker 2: say to his teammates? That's probably more important, I guess,
- 18:04Speaker 2: than what he says to the media. But still, I'm
- 18:06Speaker 2: just imagining me. And that's all I can do. I'm
- 18:08Speaker 2: not Cattell Marte. I can't speak for Cattell Marte. But
- 18:11Speaker 2: if I'm in this situation and I missed multiple games
- 18:14Speaker 2: over years just not showing up and I'm really sorry,
- 18:17Speaker 2: I'm almost to tears. I'm thinking like, gosh, man, I
- 18:20Speaker 2: just messed up my whole chance to stay with the Diamondbacks.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I love this team. I want to be here. We
- 18:26Speaker 2: went to run to the World Series a couple years ago.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I just, again, I'm not him. I can't speak for him.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I'm just talking about how I would have handled it.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Carter Jensen slept in this year, made Salve start in
- 18:37Speaker 2: his place. Like you saw that post-game interview. Like, it was–
- 18:44Speaker 2: he was definitely remorseful. Like, you feel bad about it.
- 18:47Speaker 2: And it's hard when a guy sits up there that
- 18:50Speaker 2: we don't know. We don't know him at all.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I don't know Cattell Marte other than watching his prolific
- 18:55Speaker 3: offense and one of the best second basemen in the game.
- 18:59Speaker 3: But when you read his body language, it tells me
- 19:03Speaker 3: that he doesn't necessarily– think this was that big of
- 19:08Speaker 3: a deal. Or if he does think it's a big deal,
- 19:10Speaker 3: he doesn't know how to handle it and show that emotion.
- 19:14Speaker 3: But the people that see this all the time, I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 3: you're talking about a guy who missed a game back
- 19:17Speaker 3: in 2003, allegedly. I don't know if that's 100% confirmed,
- 19:21Speaker 3: but it seems like it is. It is. It is.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I think there's still seven of the same teammates. They've
- 19:29Speaker 3: seen this act. The beauty of baseball that people never
- 19:31Speaker 3: get to see that players get to see is the
- 19:35Speaker 3: fact that who you are really comes to light in
- 19:39Speaker 3: the 162 games you play, 183 days you play them in,
- 19:44Speaker 3: plus spring training. Who you are, you cannot pull the
- 19:50Speaker 3: blinds over people you can't for a few weeks maybe
- 19:53Speaker 3: even a few months but the ups and downs of
- 19:55Speaker 3: the season the emotions the mental fortitude the whatever your
- 20:00Speaker 3: life is going on while you're playing a game that
- 20:02Speaker 3: you're trying to play at the highest level and you
- 20:05Speaker 3: live with these guys you see them more than you
- 20:07Speaker 3: see your family and These players already know who he is.
- 20:10Speaker 3: So whatever the apology is, they know who he was
- 20:15Speaker 3: before this. They know this is possible.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Okay, do you guys want the booing or Tori Lovello?
- 20:23Speaker 1: Let's do the booing first.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:25Speaker 2: It wasn't that bad, I didn't think.
- 20:27Speaker 3: No, go booing.
- 20:28Speaker 2: We can go booing.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Booing, and then we'll hear from the D-backs manager. I
- 20:46Speaker 1: want to clarify, AJ, I'm going to go against you
- 20:50Speaker 1: on this one.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Ready?
- 20:51Speaker 1: You were just in New York, you born in New York, you.
- 20:55Speaker 1: In New York, they would call that nothing. In Arizona,
- 20:57Speaker 1: that's pretty heavy booing. I've been to Arizona many times.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I'm telling you, it's a more chill crowd. I'm not
- 21:02Speaker 1: saying it's not a devoted crowd. They're just a little
- 21:04Speaker 1: bit nicer. It's not the East Coast roughness.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Listen, as somebody that's been booed plenty of times, I
- 21:10Speaker 2: know what booing is, okay? So don't give me that, Scott.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I've been booed in 29, actually 30 of 30 stadiums probably,
- 21:17Speaker 2: which is fine, okay? There were some cheers in there.
- 21:21Speaker 2: That wasn't a full-fledged, we hate you, we're mad at you.
- 21:24Speaker 2: That was a, we want you to get better booing,
- 21:27Speaker 2: and the hardcore Diamondback fans were probably the ones. But
- 21:30Speaker 2: there was also, they showed some signs of, we love you, Cattell.
- 21:33Speaker 2: We support you, Cattell.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Fine, right?
- 21:35Speaker 2: But that wasn't like a New York City, man, we
- 21:38Speaker 2: hate your guts. We're going to boo the crap out
- 21:40Speaker 2: of you on the field.
- 21:42Speaker 3: It wasn't hateful, but I was watching the Phillies broadcast
- 21:45Speaker 3: just for that at-bat. I wanted to see, and I
- 21:48Speaker 3: turned the Phillies broadcast on, and Tom McCarthy was like,
- 21:51Speaker 3: you know what, there's definitely some cheers in there, but
- 21:53Speaker 3: you can hear the boos. And Ben Davis was like, hmm,
- 21:57Speaker 3: sounds like quite a few more boos than cheers. So,
- 22:00Speaker 3: I don't know. It's a tough place to play at home.
- 22:05Speaker 3: It's tough to be booed at home. Like, you don't
- 22:06Speaker 3: want to be booed at home.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and there were some people in the crowd that
- 22:10Speaker 1: probably were.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Not that big of a deal, Kratz. It's not that big.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Of a deal.
- 22:16Speaker 1: He's not going to feed off it though, AJ.
- 22:18Speaker 3: No, that's the thing. That's the thing.
- 22:21Speaker 2: That's the difference.
- 22:22Speaker 1: 100%.
- 22:22Speaker 2: That's why he had to have the press conference after.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Because if they would have all gave him a standing ovation,
- 22:28Speaker 2: I don't think he would have said anything after the game.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But because he got booed, somebody got to him and said, hey,
- 22:34Speaker 2: you need to say a statement. And then his hat
- 22:36Speaker 2: was great, by the way. Do you think he planned
- 22:38Speaker 2: that hat that he had on? That was another step
- 22:41Speaker 2: to this. Are you kidding me? That's the hat you
- 22:43Speaker 2: chose today to wear?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Can someone read that for us? We showed it for
- 22:49Speaker 1: a glimpse on the screen. Let's do it again.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's something about the bridges I burn,
- 22:57Speaker 3: I hope it lights the way.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, bridges I burn, I hope light the way. Wow,
- 23:04Speaker 2: that's a choice today. That was a choice.
- 23:06Speaker 3: It matches his shirt, so yes, he planned it. He
- 23:13Speaker 3: was definitely– and you talk about booing. AJ said it. Like,
- 23:17Speaker 3: I've even heard you say it on the show. Like,
- 23:19Speaker 3: I kind of fed off the booing a little bit.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And I've heard it from other people. The person I
- 23:25Speaker 3: played with that got booed more than anybody that I
- 23:29Speaker 3: ever played with for an entire season was Ryan Braun.
- 23:32Speaker 3: He got booed almost everywhere we went, obviously because of
- 23:36Speaker 3: the different things that went on in his career. He
- 23:38Speaker 3: was also a really good player too. And he was like, honestly,
- 23:44Speaker 3: the boos. And he's a sensitive guy, too. But the boos,
- 23:49Speaker 3: they kind of help a little bit. And he would
- 23:51Speaker 3: crush the Cubs. The Cubs fans would boo him ridiculously.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And he would crush the Cubs. So, I see it.
- 24:00Speaker 3: I got booed, like, for two at-bats in Cincinnati one time.
- 24:02Speaker 3: That's it.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Different makeup, though. Different player.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Braun, then. Kittel, I'm telling you. Also, the people in
- 24:10Speaker 1: the crowd that were cheering, maybe they were on a
- 24:11Speaker 1: two-week vacation, and they start cheering, and they're like, hey,
- 24:15Speaker 1: I would maybe stop. What happened? He skipped a couple weeks. Oh,
- 24:21Speaker 1: did not know that.
- 24:22Speaker 3: It's like a microcosm.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Scott, he was hurt. He had a bad knee. Don't
- 24:26Speaker 2: say that. That's not true.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Well, it came out.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. Yes, Gretz?
- 24:32Speaker 3: No, no, I was just going to say, isn't that
- 24:34Speaker 3: a microcosm of what The Diamondbacks have done for his
- 24:37Speaker 3: entire career, essentially, what is coming out. Like, I know
- 24:41Speaker 3: we probably shouldn't be cheering right now, but I know
- 24:43Speaker 3: we shouldn't be enabling him. But they've created this monster,
- 24:47Speaker 3: in my opinion.
- 24:50Speaker 1: And the thing is, you know, it came out yesterday
- 24:52Speaker 1: that he missed a game in 23. So every year
- 24:55Speaker 1: since 23, he has missed time unexcused, right? 2023, the
- 25:00Speaker 1: story was there was a rainout. Wait, real quick. There
- 25:03Speaker 1: was a rainout. Then the next day he thought it
- 25:05Speaker 1: was going to be another rain out. So he just
- 25:06Speaker 1: didn't show up. And they were like, bro, we got
- 25:08Speaker 1: a game. Didn't go.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Like, can you imagine? I would be.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Pissed if I was literally doing that.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Can you imagine if you didn't show up for a
- 25:16Speaker 2: game and you did it every year? Every year. He's
- 25:19Speaker 2: done this for four years in a row. Can you
- 25:20Speaker 2: imagine just not showing up? First of all, I would
- 25:23Speaker 2: be absolutely insane in my brain. I would be like,
- 25:26Speaker 2: what am I doing? Why am I not at the field?
- 25:28Speaker 2: My team is on. I remember 2005. we had a
- 25:31Speaker 2: rain out and the team had to fly to Boston
- 25:33Speaker 2: for a makeup game. And it was the day my
- 25:35Speaker 2: daughter was born and I'm watching it in the delivery room.
- 25:39Speaker 2: It was on ESPN. I'm watching the game as I'm
- 25:41Speaker 2: sitting in the delivery room. And I'm like, why am
- 25:43Speaker 2: I not there? And I actually had a real excuse
- 25:45Speaker 2: not be there.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But I'm like, what am I? Oh my gosh. I'm
- 25:48Speaker 2: watching my teammates. I'm not there. I can't even imagine
- 25:51Speaker 2: just sitting in the hotel and being like, Yeah, you
- 25:54Speaker 2: guys got this. I'm just going to chill here. I
- 25:56Speaker 2: thought I was going to get a rain out. You
- 25:58Speaker 2: can't get a taxi to the stadium an hour before
- 26:01Speaker 2: the game and at least show up. That's where this
- 26:04Speaker 2: gets really weird to me.
- 26:06Speaker 3: It is thinking about missing a game and all these
- 26:10Speaker 3: articles I've read, all this stuff ever since it came out.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I'm not sure what day it was, but I had
- 26:14Speaker 3: the recurring dream nightmare that I used to have when
- 26:19Speaker 3: I was playing. It was that I didn't get up
- 26:22Speaker 3: in time. Not get up in time. I didn't get
- 26:24Speaker 3: ready in time to make it out to warm up
- 26:26Speaker 3: the pitcher. I had the different color socks on. My
- 26:30Speaker 3: cleats were like the wrong color. So I was changing
- 26:33Speaker 3: and I'm late for the game. When you go to
- 26:36Speaker 3: the field late at a different time, it's like for me,
- 26:41Speaker 3: it makes my hands sweat now. And I've been out
- 26:43Speaker 3: for six years. It doesn't compute in my brain that
- 26:47Speaker 3: somebody could miss a game And just be like, see
- 26:53Speaker 3: you guys tomorrow. I remember the days.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I remember the days when they had like the Little
- 26:59Speaker 2: League days where they would show up at like 5 o'clock.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I couldn't even do that. I was so nervous that
- 27:05Speaker 2: I was going to mess something up that I would
- 27:07Speaker 2: still get there.
- 27:08Speaker 3: You know, like the clubhouse is closed.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I'm like, fine. I'm just going to sit in the
- 27:11Speaker 2: back then in a chair and just sit there just
- 27:13Speaker 2: so I know I'm there. I was so nervous of
- 27:16Speaker 2: missing like a day game after a night game. I mean,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I would set my alarm. I'd go Michael style and
- 27:22Speaker 2: set like 20 alarms. I'd have them still make the
- 27:24Speaker 2: wake-up call. I'd set the alarm in my hotel room.
- 27:26Speaker 2: It was like, man, I got to make sure that
- 27:28Speaker 2: I'm up. This is like, maybe we're spending too much
- 27:31Speaker 2: time on this, but you are a hundred percent right.
- 27:34Speaker 2: You're I don't, when we would have.
- 27:35Speaker 3: The late show up days that Joe Maddon talks about
- 27:38Speaker 3: when he comes on our show, my wife would just
- 27:40Speaker 3: be like, it would probably be 1230. I'd usually leave
- 27:43Speaker 3: it like 1215 ish, maybe 1230 comes like 1245 one o'clock.
- 27:48Speaker 3: My wife would look over and she'd be like, do
- 27:50Speaker 3: you just want to go to the field? Like, you're
- 27:53Speaker 3: almost not, not even like present where you're at if
- 27:57Speaker 3: you're out of the schedule. And this dude was just,
- 28:00Speaker 3: he was just sitting in the hotel room, thought we
- 28:02Speaker 3: were going to have a rain out. I'm doing other stuff. Yeah.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Everybody agrees with what you guys are saying. I mean,
- 28:09Speaker 1: there's disagreeing every day on segments that we do. I've
- 28:12Speaker 1: barely seen any comments that have gone the other way
- 28:15Speaker 1: on this one. The biggest disagreement you're going to get
- 28:16Speaker 1: in this entire segment on comments later on is, was
- 28:19Speaker 1: he talking Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, No.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Different Michael.
- 28:27Speaker 1: With the alarm clocks. I don't remember any stories about
- 28:29Speaker 1: Michael Jordan and his alarm clocks. Don't worry about it.
- 28:32Speaker 1: It's an inside thing. Don't worry about it. I do
- 28:34Speaker 1: want to get to Tori Lavella.
- 28:35Speaker 2: It's the person who works for us anyways.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Yes. Tori Lavella, Diamondbacks manager.
- 28:41Speaker 3: I don't.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I don't.
- 28:46Speaker 4: The other times it's happened, I ask for it to
- 28:48Speaker 4: never happen again. And it's something that is a work
- 28:54Speaker 4: in progress. And I think he told you he's human
- 28:55Speaker 4: and he's not perfect. And we all have bad moments
- 28:58Speaker 4: and bad days and things that we regret. For him
- 29:00Speaker 4: to come up here and tell you guys that, I
- 29:02Speaker 4: know it wasn't easy.
- 29:04Speaker 1: And this is as much.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Progress as I've seen him make in communicating with you
- 29:07Speaker 4: guys and with me as well. We talked about personality
- 29:13Speaker 4: traits and different things like that, whereas normally he doesn't
- 29:16Speaker 4: want to even talk about personality traits. fastball middle homer
- 29:20Speaker 4: that's all i want to think about okay but he's
- 29:23Speaker 4: he's doing a nice job of really digging in and
- 29:24Speaker 4: finding a little bit about himself and that's why i'm
- 29:26Speaker 4: proud of him so he's not giving you any verbal
- 29:29Speaker 4: reassurances that this will never happen again he has he
- 29:32Speaker 4: has he has yeah okay he's not confident 100 that
- 29:36Speaker 4: that will hold i mean i might walk over walk
- 29:40Speaker 4: out of this room and hit my train even though
- 29:41Speaker 4: there's no train track even though there's no guarantee right
- 29:43Speaker 4: i it's kind of a kind of a weak answer
- 29:46Speaker 4: but i want to believe what.
- 29:48Speaker 3: He says to me honesty honesty pca just won the
- 29:53Speaker 3: mvp this past weekend Torrey Lovell should just win the
- 29:57Speaker 3: manager of the year award just for that honesty and
- 30:00Speaker 3: the fact that he has to deal with all of
- 30:02Speaker 3: this stuff. And, oh, yeah, his team's still trying to
- 30:05Speaker 3: make the playoffs too. Okay, here's– again, I came up
- 30:11Speaker 3: in a different era, Kratz. I came up in 1998.
- 30:14Speaker 3: My first manager was Tom Kelly. There was a player
- 30:18Speaker 3: we had in– this was 2000 at the end of
- 30:20Speaker 3: the year. There was a player that we had on
- 30:22Speaker 3: the Twins at that time. It was the last game
- 30:24Speaker 3: of the year. It was a day game.
- 30:25Speaker 2: He knew he wasn't playing and he showed up late
- 30:28Speaker 2: and Tom Kelly had a meeting saying, I don't know
- 30:30Speaker 2: if I'm going to be back or whatever. It was
- 30:31Speaker 2: a meeting at the end of the 2000 season. There
- 30:35Speaker 2: was this player and I'm not going to name him
- 30:36Speaker 2: because he's a prominent player that showed up late for that.
- 30:40Speaker 2: He walked in in the middle of the meeting. Now
- 30:42Speaker 2: it was like a one o'clock game and he showed
- 30:43Speaker 2: up at like 1130. Knew he wasn't playing last game
- 30:46Speaker 2: of the year. This guy had done a lot of things.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Guess what happened to him? They shipped his ass out
- 30:52Speaker 2: like before the next season started why because tom kelly
- 30:56Speaker 2: was like you're late dude like sorry it's the last
- 30:59Speaker 2: day of the year you're one of the veterans on
- 31:00Speaker 2: this team you can't have that happen again okay it's
- 31:04Speaker 2: a different mentality now because i i just i think
- 31:07Speaker 2: about this if i would have done this and i
- 31:09Speaker 2: was i don't care who i was on the twins
- 31:12Speaker 2: with tom kelly and i know it's a different era
- 31:14Speaker 2: i would have had a meeting with the manager tom
- 31:17Speaker 2: kelly would have said i don't care who you are
- 31:19Speaker 2: pack your stuff. We'll figure out where you're going. Well,
- 31:22Speaker 2: whatever we have to do to get you out of here.
- 31:24Speaker 2: And it would have been gone. There wouldn't have been a,
- 31:26Speaker 2: I don't know if this is going to happen again,
- 31:27Speaker 2: like Tori and I respect the hell out of Tori
- 31:29Speaker 2: Lavello for having to deal with this and the way
- 31:31Speaker 2: he's handled this. But I just look back and, and
- 31:33Speaker 2: it would have been such a different conversation in times
- 31:36Speaker 2: of change. I get it, but can we have that
- 31:39Speaker 2: conversation again? Or is it just completely off limits as
- 31:42Speaker 2: far as don't do this again? If you do it again,
- 31:45Speaker 2: and I know he's the 10, five guy and you
- 31:47Speaker 2: can't trade them and, all this stuff. But can you
- 31:50Speaker 2: not just say, don't let this happen again. If it
- 31:53Speaker 2: happens again, we're going to ship you to wherever we're
- 31:55Speaker 2: going to have to ship you to get rid of you.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I don't, I don't get, I don't get why this happens.
- 32:00Speaker 2: It happens. We cover it. It happens. It happens. It
- 32:02Speaker 2: happens again. He needs to answer the questions. And by
- 32:05Speaker 2: Tori saying he's taking the right step, to start to
- 32:08Speaker 2: answer the questions. Why didn't he have to answer the
- 32:10Speaker 2: question in 2023? Why didn't he have to answer the
- 32:12Speaker 2: question in 2024? Why didn't he have to answer the
- 32:15Speaker 2: question in 2025? It takes four years of this to
- 32:17Speaker 2: finally have to answer the question. I'm not being insensitive.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I'm sorry if people think that I am. I'm trying
- 32:22Speaker 2: not to be. I'm just trying to have a real
- 32:24Speaker 2: conversation about how I know it would be in the
- 32:26Speaker 2: clubhouse because the guys like you mentioned, EK, that were
- 32:29Speaker 2: there when they went to the World Series are looking
- 32:31Speaker 2: at him going, huh, this happens every year. Why does
- 32:33Speaker 2: he get to get away with it?
- 32:36Speaker 1: The game has changed. Do you know why? No, no, no,
- 32:40Speaker 1: not that. I know that. I agree with you on that.
- 32:42Speaker 1: The game has changed in this individual case. His no
- 32:45Speaker 1: trade clause is activated. Leverage changes. They can't just ship
- 32:49Speaker 1: him wherever they want anymore. They can call him and
- 32:51Speaker 1: he can continue to tell them no. Also, wait, hold up. 23, 24,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and 25, 2025. He no shows. But after the 2025 season,
- 33:01Speaker 1: they try pretty aggressively to trade him, right? They don't. Now,
- 33:06Speaker 1: no trade clause activated. is in play for him. I
- 33:10Speaker 1: don't know if you need to hide it as much
- 33:11Speaker 1: as an organization. It's happened four times. You want to
- 33:14Speaker 1: try and keep some things in-house. It wasn't public about
- 33:18Speaker 1: the 2023 situation. You think every team knows everything about
- 33:21Speaker 1: every player. They don't. Some teams actually do terrible homework.
- 33:24Speaker 1: That's why a lot of them are firing scouts and
- 33:26Speaker 1: all kinds of people. Some make a lot of phone calls.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Some make barely any. A player is a number. There
- 33:32Speaker 1: was a chance that Some things stay in house, don't
- 33:36Speaker 1: seem as big of a deal, and his trade value
- 33:38Speaker 1: is a little bit higher. It doesn't matter now. They
- 33:41Speaker 1: didn't trade him. And if he doesn't want to go
- 33:43Speaker 1: anywhere for the length of this contract and there's many
- 33:45Speaker 1: years left, he doesn't have to go anywhere. That's got
- 33:47Speaker 1: to be part of it, right? You're sitting there in
- 33:48Speaker 1: the offseason, and you're the Diamondbacks front office, and you're like, hey, guys,
- 33:51Speaker 1: last chance here. He no-shows every year. So what are
- 33:54Speaker 1: we going to do? Now this time he does it again,
- 33:56Speaker 1: and they don't have leverage. They're like, all right, we're
- 33:58Speaker 1: not going to cover for him the same way.
- 34:00Speaker 3: What are we going to do? April 2nd, 2025. They
- 34:04Speaker 3: re-upped his contract. They gave him another extension on his contract.
- 34:09Speaker 3: So that was during all this. And I remember getting
- 34:11Speaker 3: lambasted on Twitter for asking the question, well, is there
- 34:16Speaker 3: a reason they want to get rid of him? Are
- 34:18Speaker 3: there things behind this? And it just kind of went
- 34:21Speaker 3: nowhere because rarely do you trade this type of player
- 34:25Speaker 3: when the Dimebacks are spending money. Are they the Dodgers? No,
- 34:28Speaker 3: nobody's the Dodgers, but they're spending money. They went out
- 34:31Speaker 3: and made moves to want to win to get rid
- 34:34Speaker 3: of a player like this. And it was always like, well,
- 34:36Speaker 3: you know, they're going to get rid of this guy,
- 34:37Speaker 3: but it's not, you know, they don't want to just
- 34:40Speaker 3: get rid of his salary. They want to put it
- 34:42Speaker 3: into other things. Like there was a reason. And clearly
- 34:44Speaker 3: we were right. There was a reason this entire time.
- 34:47Speaker 3: They would have loved to have gotten commensurate value for
- 34:52Speaker 3: what he brings to their team and then alleviate all
- 34:56Speaker 3: the other crap that he brings.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Yeah. You're looking at this case in the offseason like,
- 35:01Speaker 1: why are they trying so hard to trade him? Well,
- 35:03Speaker 1: there you go.
- 35:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Let's step aside. We're going to get to the slumpy
- 35:08Speaker 1: Mariners and a bad loss for them last night. Also,
- 35:14Speaker 1: Snake's Territory. Snakes lost, by the way. Padres won. So
- 35:17Speaker 1: that race is really good between those two teams for
- 35:20Speaker 1: the third wildcard. Snakes territory covered the Cattell Marte case.
- 35:23Speaker 1: If you want more on it, go click subscribe or
- 35:27Speaker 1: hit the QR code to follow the show. Hey, Jacob
- 35:30Speaker 1: DeGrom actually has his worst career ERA, at least heading
- 35:33Speaker 1: into last night, I remember seeing. So he shoved seven innings,
- 35:37Speaker 1: one hit, no runs, no walks, eight strikeouts for Texas.
- 35:42Speaker 1: In a win, yes, Texas is still Very much involved
- 35:46Speaker 1: in a wild card or a division.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Ticket to Grom's so good.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Not as good this year, though.
- 35:55Speaker 3: You want to face him in the playoffs? I don't.
- 35:57Speaker 1: No.
- 35:58Speaker 2: He's still pretty good.
- 35:59Speaker 3: 38, 37. I got to look it up.
- 36:06Speaker 2: He's still pretty good, Scott. He's not as good as
- 36:08Speaker 2: he was back when he was winning the Cy Youngs,
- 36:09Speaker 2: but he's still.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Pretty darn good.
- 36:13Speaker 1: He's going to pitch a playoff game.
- 36:15Speaker 3: If they get in.
- 36:16Speaker 2: If they get in.
- 36:18Speaker 3: If you watch an A's game right now, that is
- 36:21Speaker 3: a different. If you missed a month to three weeks
- 36:24Speaker 3: of A's baseball, you didn't miss many wins. But that
- 36:27Speaker 3: lineup is totally different. I mean, you turn it on
- 36:31Speaker 3: and you're like, where did they all go? Like, we
- 36:35Speaker 3: loved watching this lineup.
- 36:38Speaker 1: They're all out.
- 36:39Speaker 3: All out.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Kurtz, Rucker, Wilson.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Wilson.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Langoliers.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Langoliers.
- 36:48Speaker 3: One, two, three, four in your lineup. Gone. Devastated. And
- 36:52Speaker 3: you still have to play your games in a minor
- 36:53Speaker 3: league park. Terrible.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I know you guys covered this with guests, with segments.
- 36:59Speaker 1: There was one or two while I was out. That
- 37:02Speaker 1: many young position players getting hurt with season-ending injuries. Come on.
- 37:08Speaker 1: We know what's the problem here.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Or even double down. Or even double down, the Rays
- 37:13Speaker 3: are winning this year. The Rays are winning this year
- 37:15Speaker 3: with probably a worse team than they had rostered last year,
- 37:18Speaker 3: and they moved back into a big league park. Just
- 37:21Speaker 3: throwing it out there.
- 37:25Speaker 1: That's the problem.
- 37:28Speaker 3: But, hey, it'll work. We're moving into Vegas.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I'm going to Vegas this weekend. I can't wait to
- 37:34Speaker 2: see the stadium. Do you think they'll give me a tour?
- 37:36Speaker 3: Take a picture.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Think if I call John Fisher, he'll give me a tour?
- 37:40Speaker 3: Just break in.
- 37:41Speaker 1: He gives a tour to the press. I actually think
- 37:43Speaker 1: he would give you a tour because he's trying to
- 37:45Speaker 1: be in the press a little bit more. Yeah. I
- 37:47Speaker 1: do think he would give you a tour if he's
- 37:49Speaker 1: in town.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Should I call him?
- 37:50Speaker 1: Not even joking.
- 37:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 1: If you have his number, call him.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I don't. I don't.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Text him then. DM him on Twitter.
- 37:59Speaker 1: He doesn't have any of that.
- 38:00Speaker 2: He doesn't. They don't respond.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Remember?
- 38:01Speaker 2: They don't reply.
- 38:04Speaker 1: SeatGeek time. Let's look ahead at the next couple days. Actually,
- 38:07Speaker 1: first of all, Will Smith is... is expected to be
- 38:10Speaker 1: activated today for the Dodgers. Maybe that gives them a
- 38:12Speaker 1: little boost on offense. On Wednesday, I know it's Tuesday,
- 38:17Speaker 1: the Miz is back pitching in the evening against the
- 38:21Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs. And that series has Logan Henderson and Kevin
- 38:25Speaker 1: Gossman on Thursday. Another Kate Anderson start on Thursday. Thursday afternoon,
- 38:30Speaker 1: Jose Soriano against Tanner Bybee, Guardians and Blue Jays, both
- 38:34Speaker 1: in the wildcard situation. What else do we like?
- 38:38Speaker 3: Hunter Brown.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I mean, the White Sox, Astros, still.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 38:43Speaker 1: So, Hunter Brown and Luis Castillo is on Thursday.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Need it. Astros are– don't look now. The Astros are
- 38:52Speaker 3: in the playoffs again. There's that. And they have their
- 38:57Speaker 3: number one. I mean, I think he's– the last time
- 39:00Speaker 3: I watched him throw, he's still working back. But he's
- 39:03Speaker 3: their guy. I mean, you have Jordan, who's struggling right now,
- 39:06Speaker 3: and they're still holding their spot. So– My Astros are
- 39:10Speaker 3: in the playoffs again. No GM, but Astros are in
- 39:14Speaker 3: the playoffs. True.
- 39:19Speaker 4: True.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Listen, the Brewers-Cubs is the headliner, more than likely. But,
- 39:25Speaker 2: I mean, the next couple of days, Seattle at Boston
- 39:28Speaker 2: is nice. White Sox at Astros is nice. There's some
- 39:32Speaker 2: good matchups as far as playoff, not only seeding goes,
- 39:36Speaker 2: but also just playoff implications. That's what's crazy is how
- 39:39Speaker 2: many good matchups. I know we're at the beginning of September,
- 39:42Speaker 2: but it's still like Blue Jays-Guardians. That's a huge series
- 39:46Speaker 2: coming up.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Huge. And by the way, can we bury the Twins
- 39:53Speaker 2: and the Tigers or is it too early for that?
- 39:55Speaker 1: Tigers for sure. Twins, where are we at with?
- 39:59Speaker 2: 66 and 72.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Well, that used to mean something to me, but sub
- 40:05Speaker 1: 500 records have changed. All right, let's go to the
- 40:10Speaker 1: board here real quick. So we have three and a half. Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I mean, no.
- 40:17Speaker 1: In today's AOI card, no. I mean, the crazy thing is,
- 40:21Speaker 1: I don't want to get too deep into this, but
- 40:24Speaker 1: Seattle's five and a half back. If we're burying the Twins,
- 40:27Speaker 1: are we burying the Mariners? Maybe we're doing that in
- 40:29Speaker 1: the next segment, a little teaser.
- 40:31Speaker 2: I thought we did that a while ago.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Well, we're about to do it again, so load up.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Of course, the code for you over at SeatGeek, 10%
- 40:39Speaker 1: off MLB tickets, promo code TERRITORY10, giving you plenty of
- 40:41Speaker 1: reasons why you should still catch some games. And green
- 40:45Speaker 1: dot good, red dot not great. Go find the seat
- 40:48Speaker 1: that suits you. Wow. What a game it was between
- 41:02Speaker 1: the Mariners and the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Back
- 41:04Speaker 1: and forth, high scoring. Trevor's story becomes the big man
- 41:09Speaker 1: in that game with clutch knocks. And AJ, he missed
- 41:12Speaker 1: a lot of time for Boston. He wasn't performing well
- 41:16Speaker 1: in his rehab games. And then he comes up and
- 41:17Speaker 1: he's like, no big deal. I'm going to be clutch
- 41:19Speaker 1: and take down a Mariners team that is at this
- 41:23Speaker 1: point on life support when it comes to their postseason hopes.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and Roman Anthony had some big at-bats in this
- 41:29Speaker 2: game too. Let's not forget Roman Anthony, who was also
- 41:31Speaker 2: a welcome back. But, wow, it was a great game.
- 41:34Speaker 2: It was an incredible game. If you didn't watch it,
- 41:35Speaker 2: I mean, Peyton totally pitched all right. They got off
- 41:37Speaker 2: to a lead, and then all of a sudden the
- 41:39Speaker 2: Mariners stormed back. Cal Raleigh hit his 20th home or whatever. Boom, boom, boom.
- 41:42Speaker 2: All this stuff happened. And then the eighth inning happens.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Trevor Story gets the double off the wall, scores two.
- 41:48Speaker 2: And if you didn't see the ninth inning, they're down
- 41:51Speaker 2: by one. First of all, I think the Mariners had
- 41:53Speaker 2: a runner on third and no outs. Oh, yeah. In
- 41:56Speaker 2: the ninth inning. It didn't get the run home, which
- 41:59Speaker 2: was a huge deal. They didn't score. And then it
- 42:02Speaker 2: goes to the– didn't it? No, it didn't. They tied it.
- 42:05Speaker 2: The Mariners– or the Red Sox tied it on a ball. Listen,
- 42:08Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez is an unbelievable center fielder. And I know
- 42:11Speaker 2: he said he had to go for this ball, but
- 42:14Speaker 2: you just can't– it can't get by you. I'm sorry.
- 42:17Speaker 2: I love Julio. I think he's an unbelievable center fielder.
- 42:19Speaker 2: But in that moment, you have a one-run lead. You
- 42:22Speaker 2: got to make them get more than one hit to
- 42:24Speaker 2: score a run. And I know my instincts told me
- 42:26Speaker 2: to go for it and being in between, I feel
- 42:28Speaker 2: like it's not an option. So I went for it.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Couldn't get it. Unfortunately ended up costing a run.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 2: But you also have to know there's a part of
- 42:36Speaker 2: you as a player when they say no doubles, right?
- 42:39Speaker 2: That means the ball cannot get past you. So no
- 42:41Speaker 2: matter what happens, if you're diving, you better 1 million
- 42:43Speaker 2: percent either catch it or throw your body in front
- 42:46Speaker 2: of it. Make sure it doesn't get by you. So
- 42:48Speaker 2: it was a mistake. Those things happen in the moment.
- 42:50Speaker 2: The game happens fast, but, man, what a huge time
- 42:52Speaker 2: for it for the Mariners.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Nice. I mean, that is a quintessential back-and-forth game the
- 42:59Speaker 3: entire time. One game may or may not swing a season,
- 43:04Speaker 3: but because the Mariners win that game, maybe they still
- 43:07Speaker 3: don't make the playoffs. But to me, losing that game,
- 43:10Speaker 3: you had Munoz out on the mound. You gave up
- 43:13Speaker 3: a single. He ended up dominating the rest of the
- 43:16Speaker 3: ninth inning. It would have kind of just been a
- 43:18Speaker 3: one-hit loss. One hit, meh, nothing inning, and they would
- 43:21Speaker 3: have won. I mean, just back-breaking. Cal hits a dinger,
- 43:26Speaker 3: and the Red Sox seem to figure out how to
- 43:30Speaker 3: win these games this year. And that could be devastating
- 43:34Speaker 3: for whoever they play in the playoffs. Mm-hmm.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Bazzardo's had some tough moments.
- 43:41Speaker 2: And did you see Anthony's score on the shallow-ish fly
- 43:44Speaker 2: ball to Randy with the great slide and whoever it
- 43:46Speaker 2: was telling him to get down on the inside, and
- 43:48Speaker 2: he slides around Cal. Randy didn't throw him out. I mean,
- 43:52Speaker 2: there was a lot that happened in that game. Then
- 43:54Speaker 2: Chapman comes out and mows through him in the 10th,
- 43:57Speaker 2: which I found interesting because they tried to bunt. I
- 44:02Speaker 2: think it was that game. Didn't they try to bunt?
- 44:04Speaker 2: They bid. They bunted him over to third in the
- 44:06Speaker 2: top of the 10th. They bunted him over, and then
- 44:09Speaker 2: they had Young hitting. The key to bunting is you're
- 44:14Speaker 2: not bunting for the guy hitting. You have to know
- 44:16Speaker 2: who's behind you. You bunt for the guy behind you.
- 44:19Speaker 2: And they had a lefty, Cole Young, the rookie up,
- 44:21Speaker 2: and he punched out. Like, that's tough, man. Sorry, you're
- 44:25Speaker 2: facing a role as Chapman. He's throwing 100 from the
- 44:27Speaker 2: left side over here, and then he's throwing that slider,
- 44:30Speaker 2: breaking away. He throws you 100 up and in. Like,
- 44:33Speaker 2: that's a tough at bat, man. I'm sorry, Chapman. That's
- 44:36Speaker 2: why teams on the road don't bunt because even if
- 44:39Speaker 2: you score that one run, it doesn't do a lot
- 44:41Speaker 2: because the other team starts with the guy on second.
- 44:43Speaker 2: And what did the Red Sox do? They bunted the
- 44:45Speaker 2: guy over, walk, walk, and then the hit– I mean,
- 44:49Speaker 2: to win it. So by– was it– I forget who
- 44:51Speaker 2: even got the hit at this point. Raffaella maybe?
- 44:54Speaker 3: The walk-off.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, who was it?
- 44:57Speaker 3: No, Trevor.
- 44:57Speaker 1: It was Trevor Story.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry, yeah. Trevor Story with the walk-off, right? But
- 45:01Speaker 2: they walked, walked to get to him, and they had
- 45:03Speaker 2: Cooper Criswell, who's a sinker guy– Story gets it up
- 45:06Speaker 2: in the air, hits it almost off the wancer to
- 45:08Speaker 2: win it. So, you know, when you bunt in the
- 45:11Speaker 2: top of the tent, which most teams don't do, you've
- 45:13Speaker 2: got to remember who's behind you. And I'm sure that
- 45:15Speaker 2: came from– because it was a full sacrifice bunt. You've
- 45:18Speaker 2: got to know Young's sitting behind you. And you know what?
- 45:20Speaker 2: There's a pretty good chance he's going to punch out
- 45:22Speaker 2: off of freaking a Roldis Chapman throwing a 100 with
- 45:25Speaker 2: a slider.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I know we're not really like usually breaking the game down,
- 45:29Speaker 3: but I couldn't agree more with you, AJ. But do
- 45:31Speaker 3: you think in that moment Robles was told to bunt?
- 45:34Speaker 3: Because there's been some missteps by Dan Wilson. He had
- 45:39Speaker 3: to have been.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Man.
- 45:43Speaker 3: He had no at-bats up to that point. He'd come
- 45:45Speaker 3: in for defense because he came in for Taylor Ward,
- 45:48Speaker 3: and they want him to bunt in that case. I
- 45:52Speaker 3: just feel like there's so many things. You don't always
- 45:56Speaker 3: have to bunt, and you don't always not bunt. But
- 45:59Speaker 3: in that case, you're setting Cole Young up for– Like,
- 46:02Speaker 3: that's a grind. That's a grind for 30-year-old A.J. Pruszynski,
- 46:08Speaker 3: let alone, you know, first season Cole Young facing Aroldis
- 46:13Speaker 3: Chapman from the left side. Sorry, like, to me, they
- 46:16Speaker 3: played into the Red Sox hands right there. Ultimately, the
- 46:19Speaker 3: game came down to making that play in center field earlier,
- 46:23Speaker 3: and they would have never had that situation, but I
- 46:27Speaker 3: couldn't agree more with you. Like, It feels like there's
- 46:30Speaker 3: been some missteps from Dan Wilson. And if that was
- 46:34Speaker 3: called by him again, I think it's a misstep.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I mean, this has to be the most underwhelming performance
- 46:46Speaker 1: of the year from a team, right? This season, I'm
- 46:48Speaker 1: saying the Mariners, not this game. I'm saying the season
- 46:51Speaker 1: for Seattle, not this game. They've lost five games in
- 46:53Speaker 1: a row. The Seattle Mariners were a, Heavy favorite to
- 46:58Speaker 1: win the American League West. They're 10 games under. 500.
- 47:03Speaker 2: They were one decision from having Munoz in the game
- 47:05Speaker 2: from going to their first World Series last year, possibly. Remember,
- 47:08Speaker 2: they didn't bring in Munoz in the Game 7 of
- 47:11Speaker 2: the ALCS? And then everyone's like, oh, they'll be back
- 47:14Speaker 2: next year. And then they re-sign Naylor, and everyone's like,
- 47:16Speaker 2: they'll be back. And it just hasn't happened. Something hasn't
- 47:19Speaker 2: happened this year. I don't know what it is. I
- 47:21Speaker 2: don't know who's to blame for that. That's one of
- 47:23Speaker 2: the mysteries of baseball. How do you fix something that
- 47:25Speaker 2: you don't know how to fix?
- 47:28Speaker 3: Are the Mets more disappointing?
- 47:34Speaker 1: Honestly, no. I think the Mariners are more disappointing. I
- 47:36Speaker 1: thought the Mets were much more of like, oh, this
- 47:42Speaker 1: might work, but it might not. Seattle was like, oh yeah,
- 47:44Speaker 1: they're going to be good. They got their rotation intact.
- 47:46Speaker 1: They added a little bit to the offense. They added
- 47:49Speaker 1: a little bit to the bullpen, right? Guys like Ferrer
- 47:51Speaker 1: and Brendan Donovan. I mean, Cal Raleigh, a you know,
- 47:56Speaker 1: after the season he had, you're not expecting the same thing,
- 47:58Speaker 1: but I mean, it's been one of the biggest drop-offs
- 48:00Speaker 1: that you'd have from one season to the next. And
- 48:02Speaker 1: I don't want to overlook this part. And this is
- 48:04Speaker 1: the highlight from the game last night. Julio Rodriguez is
- 48:08Speaker 1: a league average hitter this year. OPS plus is a hundred.
- 48:11Speaker 1: He's one Oh three.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 48:14Speaker 1: If you look at his batting average and his on
- 48:15Speaker 1: base percentage since his rookie season in 2022, it has
- 48:19Speaker 1: gone down every single season. Every year it has gone
- 48:23Speaker 1: down more. We're at two 44 batting, 3 0 5
- 48:27Speaker 1: on base. That is not good, right? He's signed and
- 48:31Speaker 1: paid to be a superstar. He has not been a
- 48:32Speaker 1: superstar this year. He's given you a little burst in
- 48:34Speaker 1: the first half. He has not been a superstar player.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Here are the numbers for you. A two war. That's
- 48:39Speaker 1: not a superstar player. That's not the Julio they're expecting
- 48:42Speaker 1: from him. That plus what's gone on with Cal and
- 48:45Speaker 1: some other factors leads to what we're looking at.
- 48:50Speaker 3: So we can put two, two categories, the Mets as
- 48:52Speaker 3: an organization and, Failed this year, players, front office, all
- 48:57Speaker 3: that stuff. Failed in their attempt. To me, I think
- 49:01Speaker 3: the Mariners players, the most disappointing outcome for the entire
- 49:06Speaker 3: team playing-wise.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair. Right, the roster construction for
- 49:11Speaker 1: the Mets was more of an issue. On this case,
- 49:13Speaker 1: it's more of disappointing seasons. Yeah, coaching could definitely be
- 49:17Speaker 1: blamed here, but it's a hole. mix of mess for
- 49:22Speaker 1: the Mariners. And I don't, I don't know. I don't
- 49:24Speaker 1: think they're going to be able to dig out of this.
- 49:25Speaker 1: They're going to have to go on a crazy run.
- 49:26Speaker 1: They have the softest schedule in baseball, according to opponents
- 49:30Speaker 1: winning percentage, but that's cool. If it's a few games,
- 49:35Speaker 1: five and a half, five and a half, we're in September.
- 49:41Speaker 2: And you've got to jump more than one team. You've
- 49:42Speaker 2: got to jump multiple teams. That's the other problem. It's
- 49:45Speaker 2: not just one team. You're chasing two or three teams.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Blue Jays, Orioles, right? They're ahead of them. I mean,
- 49:52Speaker 2: that's where it gets hard to catch is when you
- 49:55Speaker 2: have to jump multiple teams. And, look, I mean, it's
- 49:58Speaker 2: just been one of those years where nothing has gone
- 50:00Speaker 2: right and you don't know how to fix it.
- 50:01Speaker 3: It sucks. Fifth worst road record in baseball. Historically, the
- 50:07Speaker 3: Mariners can't figure out how to play on the road. Travel–
- 50:11Speaker 3: Everybody will say, but we're talking about the same story.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Trevor's story last night. I had to. It was
- 50:19Speaker 1: right in my face. I had to. It was for Kratzer.
- 50:23Speaker 1: I knew Kratzer would like that. Thank you. Okay, on
- 50:25Speaker 1: the end of this, is there a team that needs
- 50:28Speaker 1: a hug more than Seattle? No. And Peyton totally delivered.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Did you see him tag out Domkin's own? No.
- 50:38Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Did you see this?
- 50:43Speaker 3: This guy's created a cult following. I'm not sure if
- 50:47Speaker 3: this was the fifth or sixth inning. Yeah, it was
- 50:50Speaker 3: like a comebacker, and he just ran over to Ken's zone.
- 50:53Speaker 3: I mean, big old bear arms, completely out and ready
- 50:57Speaker 3: to hug him. But it was the fifth or sixth inning,
- 51:00Speaker 3: and he had a two-strike count on the batter. I'm
- 51:04Speaker 3: not sure if it was baseload or what it was,
- 51:06Speaker 3: but he was in a jam, and... fenway was standing
- 51:10Speaker 3: up they were they were they were into it like
- 51:13Speaker 3: this guy has he's got a different he's got a
- 51:16Speaker 3: different following in in new england than than some of the.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Other guys oh he is awesome he's really fun to
- 51:24Speaker 1: cover to listen to on interviews all that actually we
- 51:26Speaker 1: have a clip maybe we'll run it tomorrow from our
- 51:28Speaker 1: monster territory show where he ranks mustaches with robbie hyde
- 51:31Speaker 1: from our monster territory show he's just he's a gem
- 51:33Speaker 1: one other quick note wilson contreras hamstring injury bothering him
- 51:36Speaker 1: for a while injured list Hopefully he gets himself back
- 51:39Speaker 1: on track because he has been overall their best player
- 51:43Speaker 1: from front to back this season.
- 51:45Speaker 3: Right?
- 51:45Speaker 1: Am I missing anyone?
- 51:47Speaker 2: Offensive player. And by the way, you know what he did?
- 51:50Speaker 2: They kind of waited until after the Yankees series to
- 51:52Speaker 2: IL him because I think they wanted to see how
- 51:55Speaker 2: that series went. And if they would have won three
- 51:57Speaker 2: out of four and got really close to the Yankees,
- 51:59Speaker 2: they probably would have just held off on this. But
- 52:01Speaker 2: now that they're kind of at a position where they're
- 52:03Speaker 2: more than likely not going to catch the Yankees, they're like, oh,
- 52:05Speaker 2: let's get a break and let's get you ready. For
- 52:08Speaker 2: when we have to play the Yankees in the wildcard series.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Yep.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Cause yeah, it's going to be Yankees, Red Sox in
- 52:15Speaker 1: the Bronx. And then the winner probably what plays the race.
- 52:17Speaker 1: So you just get rid of all the ALEs teams
- 52:19Speaker 1: in five minutes, but that's a different conversation.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Love those White Sox. Yes. Make it to play.
- 52:26Speaker 3: They have to play JV teams to make it to the,
- 52:30Speaker 3: to make the American league championship series.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Hey, it's been a long couple of years in White
- 52:34Speaker 2: Sox land. Crats don't poop on our parade. hey, hey,
- 52:38Speaker 2: you got to win big league games in the playoffs.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Let's leave it at that. Like, we're having fun with it.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Big league games in the playoffs are the real deal, okay? Listen,
- 52:48Speaker 2: they're playing the Astros right now. They lost last night.
- 52:50Speaker 2: They got a couple more against the Astros. That's who
- 52:52Speaker 2: they would match up with, you know, somewhat in a
- 52:55Speaker 2: playoff series right now. That team can do some things.
- 52:58Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I know they're only around 500. That team has–
- 53:01Speaker 2: if Hunter Brown's right, that team can do some stuff.
- 53:03Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Hey, we got some reactions from Yankees players. Yesterday in
- 53:09Speaker 1: stories about the Will Fleming comments, we covered that story yesterday,
- 53:13Speaker 1: and now he wanted the Red Sox to throw at
- 53:17Speaker 1: Austin Wells and fight Jazz Chisholm and all that, right?
- 53:21Speaker 1: Jazz said it was unprofessional, and he won't remember who
- 53:23Speaker 1: he is tomorrow. Aaron Judge said that he needs to
- 53:27Speaker 1: clean that up and was not too happy with what
- 53:28Speaker 1: he said. And then here's Carlos Rodon on the situation
- 53:31Speaker 1: with the stolen bases. Rodon said, this is not the
- 53:34Speaker 1: pat on your back league, and we're not going to
- 53:36Speaker 1: be nice to you. Everyone's coming to take the food
- 53:38Speaker 1: off your table and they're coming to take your money.
- 53:40Speaker 1: That's how this game is played. There are no nice
- 53:44Speaker 1: guys basically just saying, Hey, like six run lead. Sorry
- 53:47Speaker 1: about it guys. We're not letting this thing get to three,
- 53:50Speaker 1: which easily can happen. And then having to use our
- 53:52Speaker 1: closer or it's not like there's never been a six
- 53:55Speaker 1: run comeback before.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Someone just did it. Someone just scored. The reds just
- 53:58Speaker 2: scored seven in the ninth the other day. It just happened.
- 54:03Speaker 2: So listen, The rules have changed. There are no rules anymore.
- 54:05Speaker 2: So do whatever you want. And listen, jazz handled this.
- 54:08Speaker 2: He kind of made it into a little bit of
- 54:10Speaker 2: funniness when he said, I won't remember who this guy is,
- 54:12Speaker 2: you know, two days from now. Good for him. And
- 54:14Speaker 2: you know what? We'll film Fleming. Apologize. Good for him.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Let's move on. It was, it was funny for a minute.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Great. Good. Everybody stood up for each other and
- 54:27Speaker 3: hopefully it doesn't happen again. Yeah.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Well, it probably will. Now, we used to talk about
- 54:34Speaker 1: this almost every day on baseball shows, unwritten rules. It
- 54:38Speaker 1: doesn't get talked about as much like AJ mentioned. But
- 54:41Speaker 1: it pops up every now and then.
- 54:43Speaker 3: Nobody's policing it.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but should anybody be policing this? Should anyone be
- 54:47Speaker 1: policing this situation in particular?
- 54:51Speaker 2: Well, no. Do you mean the Jazz Chisholm stealing bases?
- 54:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean, it depends. It's a team-to-team. It's a
- 55:02Speaker 2: whatever manager-to-manager thing. I mean, again, there are no rules anymore.
- 55:06Speaker 2: You cannot have guys bat-flipping and doing all the things
- 55:09Speaker 2: that guys do, and then a guy steals a base
- 55:11Speaker 2: and be like, that's it. That's the line that we're
- 55:14Speaker 2: drawing in the sand is that he stole a base. Well,
- 55:16Speaker 2: what about when the guy hits a home run and
- 55:18Speaker 2: throws his bat? If you're going to let everything go,
- 55:20Speaker 2: you've got to let everything go. You can't get mad
- 55:22Speaker 2: about certain things. Sorry.
- 55:23Speaker 3: It used to be seven– Before five, five after seven
- 55:29Speaker 3: would be you stop running when you're up seven before
- 55:33Speaker 3: the fifth inning or you're up five after the seventh inning.
- 55:38Speaker 3: That used to be what it is because you're out
- 55:39Speaker 3: of slam range plus tax.
- 55:43Speaker 6: With September come the expansion of Major League rosters. And
- 55:47Speaker 6: with that, often some top prospect call-ups. We have two
- 55:52Speaker 6: such call-ups that happened on Tuesday. in the Padres' top
- 55:56Speaker 6: catching prospect, Ethan Salas, and power hitting Mariners prospect, Lazaro Montes.
- 56:02Speaker 6: We'll start with Salas, who ranks 12th on our current
- 56:06Speaker 6: top 100 list, one of the elite catching prospects that
- 56:09Speaker 6: we've seen in the minors over the last couple of years.
- 56:12Speaker 6: His catching defensive chops since the moment he stepped into
- 56:15Speaker 6: pro ball have really been sort of his carrying tool
- 56:18Speaker 6: and selling point, caught a major league spring training game
- 56:22Speaker 6: at 16 years old. There's Serious chops defensively. There's no
- 56:26Speaker 6: questions about his ability to block, receive, frame, and, of course, throw.
- 56:31Speaker 6: The bat, on the other hand, has been a little
- 56:33Speaker 6: bit slower of a development for Salas. After an injury-plagued
- 56:38Speaker 6: 2025 season where he only played 10 games, he bounced
- 56:42Speaker 6: back in a big way in 2026 and has hit 296, 374,
- 56:44Speaker 6: 448 with 10 home runs, and 17 stolen bases across
- 56:45Speaker 6: 96 games, primarily at AA. But since he was promoted
- 56:56Speaker 6: to AAA at the end of July, he's hit 326, 410,
- 57:00Speaker 6: 539 over 24 games with a 13.3% walk rate and
- 57:07Speaker 6: a 9.5% strikeout rate. I think as you've seen him
- 57:10Speaker 6: take such a significant step forward with the bat, Salas
- 57:13Speaker 6: looks like a franchise catcher long-term and probably someone who's
- 57:17Speaker 6: going to be behind the plate for the Padres for
- 57:19Speaker 6: the better part of the next decade. Montes, on the
- 57:22Speaker 6: other hand, is a very different type of player. not
- 57:24Speaker 6: known for his defensive ability in the outfield. He is
- 57:27Speaker 6: a pure slugger and one of the most talented power
- 57:30Speaker 6: hitters that we've seen in the minors over the last
- 57:33Speaker 6: couple of seasons. He ranks second in the minor leagues
- 57:35Speaker 6: at present with 38 home runs. He's hit two 49,
- 57:39Speaker 6: three 69, five 58 over 123 games primarily at double a,
- 57:44Speaker 6: but he's had 44 games over the last couple of
- 57:46Speaker 6: months at the triple a level. He's hit two 74,
- 57:48Speaker 6: three 69, five 71. Um, The strikeouts are a big
- 57:53Speaker 6: concern with Montes. We're talking about a player with higher
- 57:57Speaker 6: end zone whiff rates. Montes ran a 40% overall whiff
- 58:01Speaker 6: rate to date and a 34.7 end zone miss rate
- 58:05Speaker 6: across all levels. Struggles with breaking balls, struggles at times
- 58:09Speaker 6: with velocity, but the contact quality is 80 great.
- 58:12Speaker 1: It is outlier.
- 58:13Speaker 6: It's somebody that when he does make contact, it goes
- 58:16Speaker 6: a long way.
- 58:17Speaker 1: It does damage. It drives and runs.
- 58:19Speaker 6: He offers a little bit of power upside here, especially
- 58:22Speaker 6: if he gets on a run over his early days
- 58:24Speaker 6: in the major leagues. Both of these prospects are probably
- 58:27Speaker 6: players who are going to be long-term fixes for both
- 58:31Speaker 6: of these teams. It's just a matter of how much
- 58:33Speaker 6: they're going to impact the stretch run here in September.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Good stuff from Jeff Ponce, Baseball America. Hot Sheet, by
- 58:40Speaker 1: the way, is about to pop on live on the
- 58:42Speaker 1: Baseball America YouTube channel. Big prospect call-ups over the last
- 58:46Speaker 1: couple days. We're excited about them. And then also Dirt
- 58:49Speaker 1: from the Dugout, one of our shows on the Foul
- 58:51Speaker 1: Territory Network, had a Dave Roberts conversation that you should
- 58:56Speaker 1: check out. So hit the QR code or go over
- 58:58Speaker 1: to their YouTube channel later today if you'd like to
- 59:00Speaker 1: check that out. The content never stops on the FT Network.
- 59:03Speaker 1: And then we'll bring it in here before we say goodbye.
- 59:06Speaker 1: One topic we didn't get to, guys. uh, another three
- 59:09Speaker 1: Homer game for Alex Bregman. I know one was off
- 59:12Speaker 1: a position player, but it's not like he's the only
- 59:14Speaker 1: one that's ever done two Homers plus one off a
- 59:16Speaker 1: position player. Cubs are just hitting Homers in bunches, 17, three,
- 59:21Speaker 1: and they pounded Milwaukee. And actually I would say the
- 59:23Speaker 1: biggest thing I learned from this game, AJ was watching
- 59:26Speaker 1: Kyle Harrison. stuff down, arm angle down, vert, all that stuff.
- 59:30Speaker 1: So you just want to make sure that some of
- 59:32Speaker 1: their youngsters are going to be okay heading into the
- 59:35Speaker 1: stretch run here.
- 59:36Speaker 2: By the way, I love when position players get to pitch.
- 59:39Speaker 2: First of all, it makes me laugh. But Andrew Vaughn pitching,
- 59:42Speaker 2: why have we– I don't know, Crouch, you got to pitch.
- 59:44Speaker 2: I never got to pitch. But why have we gone
- 59:46Speaker 2: to the loop-de-loop? Why can't we just throw like 80
- 59:50Speaker 2: miles an hour and instead we do this loop-de-loop pitch
- 59:53Speaker 2: that everyone– it's like slow pitch softball.
- 59:56Speaker 3: I don't know why they do it. I never did
- 59:59Speaker 3: the loop-de-loop. I did the knuckly McNucklerson. But, no, I
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: don't get it.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm over the position player pitching thing. Have been
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: for a while.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: It happens too much now. It happens too much now.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: That's the thing. It used to be cute when it
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: happened once a year, once every– now it happens like
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: once a week for teams.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: It's crazy. They go right to it. They go right
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: to it. Gary Sanchez closed the game out. They were
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: winning 22 to nothing. Gary Sanchez closed it out.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Can we just make a rule where you can't do it?
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: Period.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: It's just pitchers. And if you have to go to
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: position players, then the game's over. Besides a designated two-way player.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: Because I was on teams where I was the 26th guy,
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: 25th guy when we had 25-man rosters. And if I
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: didn't pitch that last inning, another guy goes out there
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: And then somebody goes down. I guess who's getting sent down?
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: It's either the pitcher or me. So I'm not totally
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: against forever, like, banning it. I just think it does
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: happen way too much. I agree.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Okay. Then at least some rules to try and get
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: it to a little more variety.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: They already did that. They already did that. They made
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: the rules to try to stop it, and it hasn't helped.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: It's actually made it worse. They're actually encouraging it now.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we need stricter rules for it. That sounds like
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: a really good December, January type of segment on FT.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Good show today. We'll bring someone on to talk about
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the Angels sale. That was wild. If you're just joining us,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: we did a nice 10 minutes on it. Baseball America
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: hot sheet is on right now. What?
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: We need Sam Blum to talk about it. He's Mr.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: Angel.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Where the heck is Sam Blum when.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: We need him? Sam's on it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: We can call him tomorrow. And check out this shirt, FoulTerritoryShop.com.
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: Here it is.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: You're done.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: Take us out. Look at this shirt. We need a
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: shirt that says Curacao's.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Yes, the Netherlands.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: WBC shirt. And also a Parley Boost token. Parley Boost
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: token might be in your BetMGM account. Swing for a
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: bigger payout. You can apply it to a bet if
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: it works out. More winnings, gambling problem or concern. There's help.
