- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today we are talking about the rules that are unwritten.
- 0:34That rule us. Sounds kind of crazy, right?
- 0:37We have rules that are unwritten, meaning we are
- 0:40unaware of them, but they rule us regularly.
- 0:43They they really drive us and they are the force behind our
- 0:46decisions. But yes, that is true.
- 0:49And you know, we have talked before about concepts about this
- 0:54in many different ways, but these are these are kind of
- 0:56tricky because these are things that we live by that we don't
- 1:01actually know our rules until they show up.
- 1:04So an example of something silly might be how you load the
- 1:08dishwasher. So you have an unconscious rule
- 1:12that says every time you open the bottom, pull out of the
- 1:15dishwasher, the plates have to go in a certain spot in a
- 1:19certain direction and the silverware has to go in a
- 1:23certain spot in a certain direction.
- 1:25And you have all of these different aspects of rules that
- 1:30are protocol for the dishwasher. Well, what happens when somebody
- 1:34else comes in your house and they're helping you clean up and
- 1:37they don't do it the way you do it, or even people in your house
- 1:41don't do it the way you do it. And you get irritated and you
- 1:44find that you are getting irritated and you use language
- 1:47like they're not loading the dishwasher the right way.
- 1:52That is a key for an unwritten rule because as far as I know,
- 1:56the dishwasher did not come with a manual that said how to load
- 1:59it properly in the directions of certain things.
- 2:02It might have said explained how to use The Jets, but it did not
- 2:05explain other aspects of it. So there would be a unwritten
- 2:10rule that's being driven. And for me, let me explain to
- 2:14you why I used that one because I definitely have an unwritten
- 2:17rule about how to load the dishwasher, just like how to do
- 2:20laundry, just like how to make a bed.
- 2:22I have lots of rules around things when it comes to order.
- 2:27Now, those things I was, I would, I was honestly never
- 2:32aware of them until I had other people in my life.
- 2:35And then it became an issue because you're not doing it the
- 2:38right way. And then the questions would
- 2:41always be, well, why is it the right way?
- 2:42It's just your way. That doesn't mean it's the right
- 2:44way. And those are valid points, and
- 2:49my reaction to those used to be much more unresourceful than
- 2:52they are now. But the point is these this game
- 2:57of rules is not just about the dishwasher.
- 2:59Now. I used it as a silly example to
- 3:01make everybody laugh. However, there are parts of this
- 3:05that come up all the time in our world.
- 3:08And what's so imperative and so important that we pay attention
- 3:12to is these show up in our work life, they show up in our
- 3:16relationships, they show up in everything that we do.
- 3:20And if we're not conscious of what we are thinking about and
- 3:23what our unwritten rules are, we will forever be taken advantage
- 3:27of in our own consciousness by the stuff that we haven't worked
- 3:32through. So when you start to have
- 3:34conflict with other people, you have to ask yourself, am I
- 3:39running into a rule that I didn't know anything about?
- 3:41Is there something here that I need to check in with myself
- 3:45about? And that's what this is really
- 3:46about today. When conflict arises, when
- 3:50things show up, when you have these elements of your life that
- 3:56are present, you have to always come back to what is my role in
- 4:00this and how is my reaction and how is my belief and how is my
- 4:06tonality, how is my structure dictating an outcome here that
- 4:11I'm clearly not happy with and I'm not enjoying?
- 4:14Because obviously if I'm in conflict, well, this is
- 4:17something I have to look at. Now, on the flip side of this,
- 4:20this works in the positive too. Like you have all these things
- 4:25that go on behind the scenes. And it could be that, you know,
- 4:28you don't know all these little things that make you happy and
- 4:30then someone does them and you're like, oh, this makes me
- 4:32so happy. But it's not something you ever
- 4:35realized about yourself. And it there's just a little
- 4:39tiny piece of it that says, oh, yeah, that's wonderful.
- 4:42And then now you have awareness of it.
- 4:44It's now gone from something that you were unaware of to
- 4:47something that you are aware of and you know.
- 4:49When you know better, you can do better.
- 4:52As Maya Angelou says, when you know better, you can do better.
- 4:56But if you don't know, you're just going to be subjected to
- 5:00the existence that's unconscious and probably not cultivated in a
- 5:06way that you would particularly like.
- 5:08So today I'm going to ask you to look for the rules.
- 5:12What are your unwritten rules? What are the things that you do
- 5:15not know about that you want to bring into your consciousness so
- 5:19that you can cultivate them, that you can fix them, that you
- 5:22can grow them or shrink them and make them something that is a
- 5:26useful tool as opposed to something that is a nuisance
- 5:29tool? I hope you guys have a very
- 5:32blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:35Bye.
