Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / From Ford Tauruses to Track Titans: The AutoInterests Origin Story (Jason Kennedy)
Transcript
- 0:00Break fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from
- 0:04all over the auto sphere, from wrench turners and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of petrol heads that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:27There are so many choices these days to help you get on track and picking the
- 0:31right one for you isn't always easy.
- 0:33Inter Auto Interests, a professional motorsports event management business
- 0:37specializing in high performance driver education, setting itself
- 0:40apart from the rest of the pack.
- 0:42That's right, Brad.
- 0:42And their origin story closely parallels that of GTMs.
- 0:47And so we're really excited to have Jason Kennedy, president of Auto Interests, on
- 0:52this episode of Brake Fix to explain how this all works and how it all fits in.
- 0:56And as always, I'm your host, Brad.
- 0:58And I'm Eric.
- 0:59So let's roll.
- 1:00So welcome to break fix Jason.
- 1:02Thanks for having me.
- 1:03Glad to be here.
- 1:04Let's kick it off with your superhero, super secret origin story.
- 1:08Tell us all about the who, what, where, and when of auto interests.
- 1:13Well, it dates back to about 2004 and we started with no intentions of doing
- 1:20what we're doing today as the, uh, Ford Taurus car club of all things.
- 1:25This all started when the president of the club got this.
- 1:28Amazing idea to take everybody to a race track, Gingerman
- 1:32Raceway in South Haven, Michigan.
- 1:35And I'd never even heard of a road course before.
- 1:37I'd been drag racing and some stuff like that, but I was never really a,
- 1:42Like F1 fan or anything like that.
- 1:44I just never paid attention to it.
- 1:45And I didn't really even know what a road course was, let
- 1:48alone one that I could drive on.
- 1:50The guy's name was Bob Gerbe and he was a really good mentor to me.
- 1:54He booked this event.
- 1:55And so, and a bunch of us went, we had no idea what we were doing with
- 1:59our, uh, Stock Ford Tauruses and a couple of the guys had SHOs that we
- 2:03all had to drool over and all that.
- 2:06So we went and we had a great time and like I said, we had
- 2:09no idea what we were doing.
- 2:10So we burned out brakes and ruined tires and we're doing all kinds of things in
- 2:15the The paddock at the track and in the parking lot at the auto parts store.
- 2:19And, you know, it was just a nonstop weekend of car work,
- 2:23but it was a great time.
- 2:24And that was the start of it.
- 2:26And, um, Bob had some, some challenging family issues and things like that.
- 2:31And unfortunately couldn't organize those events anymore.
- 2:34So in talking to him, I got the dumb idea that I was going to do
- 2:37it because I loved it so much.
- 2:39So.
- 2:39I thought, okay, well then I'll put these events together.
- 2:42So we did, and we kept it going, and then we were going to Gingerman,
- 2:46you know, a couple times a year.
- 2:48And then we kept looking, oh, what other tracks can we go to,
- 2:50and stepping it up a little bit.
- 2:52Never in my mind was this ever going to be a serious business or anything like that.
- 2:57For me, I just did it because, well, I wanted free track time.
- 3:01And, uh, you know, over the years we had a good time with it, but Then
- 3:05everybody started getting older and being responsible and having kids and
- 3:10families and all those boring things.
- 3:11And the group was kind of slowly dying off a little bit.
- 3:15And we thought, well, we really need to branch out because doing
- 3:19these as the Ford Taurus club really isn't all that marketable,
- 3:22especially since at that point, barely any of us had a Taurus anymore.
- 3:26Um, I had switched to a Mustang and there was.
- 3:29All kinds of other things, you know, just
- 3:32smart, smart move there.
- 3:33Smart move.
- 3:34Yeah, it was, it was a little more purposeful for what I was doing, but
- 3:38we decided, you know, we really need to transition this, the auto interest name
- 3:42and brand had been thought of at that time that we were starting to realize we needed
- 3:46to change our name for the track events.
- 3:49And we had this brilliant idea of me and probably half a dozen
- 3:53other friends that we're going to be like the next Jalopnik, right?
- 3:56We're going to.
- 3:57Start this blog.
- 3:58And we're going to do all this stuff.
- 3:59Cause we all had plenty of opinions about cars and went to all the
- 4:02auto shows and everything else.
- 4:04Well, generating that kind of content, keeping up with that proved
- 4:07to be more challenging than, than anybody was going to keep up with.
- 4:11This sounds awfully familiar, but please, please continue.
- 4:14I
- 4:15feel like we're listening to our
- 4:16origins.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:17It's like our obituary, but anyway, that's cool.
- 4:21That's funny.
- 4:22So, you know, then we thought, well, we already made this website.
- 4:26We already have this.
- 4:26And we hadn't, we had just started to, to kind of put a
- 4:31little bit of content together.
- 4:32Hadn't really even told anybody it existed without, well, let's
- 4:36just use this name for the events.
- 4:38So, okay, well, that's what happened.
- 4:41And, and we did that.
- 4:42And then it wasn't really until about 2011, 2012, somewhere in there that,
- 4:48you know, by that time we were going to three or four different tracks and,
- 4:51you know, I'm thinking, okay, you know what, maybe we can make a go of this.
- 4:54And I kept adding another weekend, another weekend, another weekend, year after
- 4:59year, and now here we are doing close to 35 event dates a year in a season.
- 5:03And we're busy, you know, Basically, every weekend you can be in the Rust Belt.
- 5:08I mean, at this point, we're the third largest E.
- 5:11E.
- 5:11organization in the country.
- 5:13And, you know, I realize PCA at a national level, and some of the clubs do more than
- 5:18us, but in terms of independent chapters and all of that, it's really interesting.
- 5:22It's a truly grassroots story, and it just came out of You know, a club of a bunch
- 5:27of guys wanting to have a good time with their cars, and that's where we came from.
- 5:32So are you
- 5:32guys
- 5:33headquartered out
- 5:34of Michigan, then,
- 5:35or somewhere else?
- 5:36No, actually, we're headquartered out of Canton, Ohio.
- 5:39That's where I'm from.
- 5:40That's where a lot of our instructors are from.
- 5:43We've kind of got a pretty strong Epicenter of the group, our customer
- 5:48service person, Andrea and her husband, Mario, they're here now.
- 5:51They're actually we're from the Detroit area, but they moved
- 5:54down here a couple of years ago.
- 5:55And it kind of works out really nicely because we're triangulated right between
- 6:00Nelson ledges, middle Highland pit race.
- 6:02They're all about the same distance.
- 6:03And lucky me, I was just born here.
- 6:06So that's, I don't know how that worked out that way, but it did.
- 6:10So of those three, which one do you call home?
- 6:12I'd probably have to say Nelson, just because that's where we started.
- 6:16That's the, in my mind of those, that's the real grassroots track.
- 6:19You know, that's one with the most history.
- 6:21Nelson was the second track I ever drove on.
- 6:24Oddly enough, I drove six hours to Gingerman to drive that one first and
- 6:29then later found out Nelson existed and I'd have to call Nelson home for sure.
- 6:33You guys do 35 events a year all over the East Coast and the Midwest.
- 6:36Which would you consider is your favorite now that you have all this experience?
- 6:40That's really a tough one.
- 6:41I mean, speaking as an event organizer, I'd have to say Pit Race just because
- 6:46they've built up their amenities.
- 6:47Very, very nicely.
- 6:49They've got, you know, great paddock space.
- 6:51Everything's paved, great power, uh, air conditioned bathrooms, you know,
- 6:55a nice big air conditioned classroom, beautiful new garages, you know,
- 7:00from that perspective, that's great.
- 7:01But from the actual driving experience standpoint, pit race is certainly
- 7:05a contender on the track itself.
- 7:07It's brand new asphalt.
- 7:08They did a 1.
- 7:082 mile edition of the South track just a few years ago,
- 7:12which still feels like yesterday.
- 7:15It's a really challenging track to drive.
- 7:17You know, there's always a classic, uh, mid Ohio too.
- 7:20And I'm, I'm kind of one of the weirdos that likes mid Ohio and the wet.
- 7:25I enjoy the rain line at mid Ohio.
- 7:27So is there such thing as a
- 7:29rain
- 7:29line?
- 7:30Really?
- 7:31Well, in Mid Ohio there is for sure.
- 7:33Not at all tracks really, but in Mid Ohio there is for sure.
- 7:37And that really comes from there's just, there's so much sealer on that track that
- 7:41it's really like an ice skating rink.
- 7:43I mean, it is, it's really bad if you hit that sealer when it's wet, it's just
- 7:48like hitting black ice on the street.
- 7:50I have to agree with you.
- 7:51Pit race is definitely in my top five.
- 7:53I love going there ever since we started going there.
- 7:56Uh, you know, everybody's like, when are we going back to pit?
- 7:58If you tell me we're going to pit, everybody's packing up and getting
- 8:01ready to go, but I I'm with you.
- 8:03I'm an odd ball as well.
- 8:04Mid Ohio is still like my number one and road Atlanta is a close second to that.
- 8:09They're just such technical, fantastic tracks with a long history,
- 8:13especially Their prominence and IMSA and Trans Am and things like that.
- 8:17So fantastic.
- 8:18So we're, we're, we're hitting all the marks here for sure.
- 8:20Let's go back to talking about auto interests a little bit.
- 8:23And, you know, you guys have been around for a while now, but you know, a lot
- 8:27of us here on the East coast, We're starting to see more and more names come
- 8:31up, you know, thanks to relationships with people like HPD E Junkie and
- 8:35other groups where, you know, your logo is starting to pop up more and more.
- 8:39You know, we want to ingratiate everybody to auto interests, especially, you
- 8:43know, again, here on the East Coast.
- 8:45So what makes you guys different than the names we're familiar with?
- 8:49Sure.
- 8:49And that's a great question.
- 8:50We get that question a lot.
- 8:52And, you know, I think the grassroots nature that we really came up in.
- 8:56Helped us build our differentiators.
- 8:58You know, number one is I don't think you're going to find another
- 9:01organization that's truly focused more on beginner learning and being
- 9:05welcoming to new people into the sport.
- 9:08We've gotten really, really good at getting first time drivers on the track.
- 9:12We had over 700 first timers drive with us last year that had
- 9:16never been on a track before.
- 9:17And the repeat customer rate is through the roof.
- 9:20That tells me everything we need to know, but.
- 9:22We've worked really hard to build an instruction program and groom instructors,
- 9:27you know, to, to do a quality job.
- 9:29We don't want the instructors that are there for free track time.
- 9:32We want the ones that are really interested in getting people into
- 9:36the sport, keeping them safe, and most importantly, having them.
- 9:39Letting them have a good time.
- 9:40You know, that's what it's all about.
- 9:42If you come to the track and you just can't figure out the line or
- 9:45you can't figure out some technical portion of it, that's no fun.
- 9:48So we find the instructors that are going to make sure that it is a good
- 9:52time that you are able to get the hang of it and you can go at your own pace.
- 9:57There's no pressure.
- 9:58In that context, we add technology tools to make that even better.
- 10:02So, you know, everybody tries to find good instructors, but to me, it's more
- 10:06about the systematic approach of how you manage the educational process.
- 10:11So we have a system we call Trackside and we have a learning module within that.
- 10:17And we have an 88 point driving curriculum that when you work with one of our driving
- 10:21instructors, they're checking off every single one of those individual criteria.
- 10:27And they're leaving you notes in there.
- 10:28They're telling you, you know, you've mastered this one.
- 10:31You're at 50 percent on this one.
- 10:33Uh, it leaves you with a report card at the end of the day of very specific
- 10:36things for you to work on and also to communicate to the next instructor that
- 10:41you have, where you stand, you know, from the learning perspective, that's
- 10:45definitely a big differentiator for us because not only philosophically
- 10:49and culturally, do we have.
- 10:51The superior instructors in my opinion, but we also build a system to support
- 10:55all of that and we layer that on top of what we call an HPD points system.
- 11:01So we're the only players in the game where you earn points
- 11:04for every event you sign up for.
- 11:06So if you've ever been to.
- 11:08A Dunkin Donuts or a Starbucks or whatever, based on what you
- 11:11spend there, you get stars or points or whatever they call it.
- 11:14We have a system that works the exact same way.
- 11:17So every time you sign up for an event, you get points.
- 11:20You can redeem those for coupons for discounts later.
- 11:23The icing on the cake is, as you master driving skills when you work
- 11:26with one of our instructors, you get additional bonus HPDE points.
- 11:30added to your account every time you master skills.
- 11:33So we put our money where our mouth is in terms of the
- 11:35education and the instruction.
- 11:37That's really, really interesting.
- 11:38And that's extremely unique.
- 11:40Let's set some expectations for the newbies.
- 11:42Since you concentrate on the newbies a lot, let's talk about the DE program
- 11:47in the classroom, because a lot of people think that you just show up
- 11:51to the track and you get in a car and you're going to do some laps.
- 11:54And Brad and I are both coaches and we know that isn't the truth, right?
- 11:58We spend most of our weekend.
- 11:59In the right seat, trying to, you know, get the safest way
- 12:02around the track and all that.
- 12:03But there's also a classroom aspect of it.
- 12:05And every organization has a different way of approaching DE, the education side
- 12:11of, you know, high performance driving.
- 12:13So what are the expectations for a new student?
- 12:16Details that they may not pick up until they get there their
- 12:18first time.
- 12:19So there's many.
- 12:20Dimensions of that question.
- 12:22So in terms of just what to expect in the classroom, one thing that we've done, um,
- 12:26you're going to find a theme here that we're big believers in technology and,
- 12:30and using that to support what we do.
- 12:32So we have something we call a classroom cart, and it's about a eight foot long
- 12:37cart that a big giant screen pops up out of, and it's all self contained
- 12:42as a full AB set up in a sound system.
- 12:45Mixer, everything else.
- 12:47And we built that because most of the tracks we go to have
- 12:52virtually zero infrastructure for a classroom environment.
- 12:55Of course, pit race is an exception to that.
- 12:57Summit point is an exception to that, but even there, like at summit point with the
- 13:01different circuits, it's inconsistent of what resources you get on each circuit.
- 13:05So we said, you know what?
- 13:07We need to build something to be self contained to maintain the quality
- 13:10level, regardless of where we're at.
- 13:12We have a full database and bank of videos.
- 13:15We have in car video.
- 13:16We have drone footage.
- 13:18Uh, we have all kinds of different things to support the learning process.
- 13:21Of course, we have PowerPoints and things of that nature that help you
- 13:25bisect a corner and explain where.
- 13:28The apex is and we're turning and turn out are all these things.
- 13:31So we realize that different people learn different ways and, you know, for
- 13:35the visual learners or people that need to see video or graphic support for
- 13:40things, we bring all of that with us.
- 13:42That's the first thing in the classroom.
- 13:44Now concerning what a brand new driver would experience when they come to one of
- 13:48our events, you know, the very first thing they're doing after the general driver's
- 13:52meeting is they're in the classroom.
- 13:54So for first time drivers.
- 13:56The way we set it up is the first classroom is meant to
- 14:00be very, very digestible.
- 14:02What we mean by that is we're basically just going to tell you,
- 14:06look, here are the safety protocols, make sure they understand the flags,
- 14:10and then we're going to tell them, you know, look for your flaggers.
- 14:13Learn the lay of the land, uh, and we actually pace that very first session.
- 14:17So there's a pace car in it.
- 14:19Uh, we just want them to understand where to be on the track, where the pit
- 14:22in is, where the pit out is, uh, where all the staff corner worker stations
- 14:27are, and all that sort of thing.
- 14:28So we, we try to ease into it.
- 14:30So we don't want anybody just going.
- 14:32Gung ho out there that doesn't know where they're going, doesn't know what
- 14:35they're doing, and those types of things.
- 14:37Obviously, that's a huge safety issue.
- 14:39So, we do a total of three classroom sessions.
- 14:42The second and third classroom session get more into vehicle dynamics,
- 14:46technicals of the particular track that we're at, and things of that nature.
- 14:50So, we ease into those things throughout the day.
- 14:53And then the intent is that each session on track, you're building a little
- 14:57bit more speed each time gradually as your instructor is comfortable with.
- 15:03And then we layer on top of that at venues that supported, uh, car control.
- 15:07So we have car control drills that we've specifically designed
- 15:11to basically accelerate the understanding of handling dynamic.
- 15:15We want you to get sideways or understeer, oversteer, all those different things.
- 15:20We want that to happen in the car control area before it
- 15:22happens to you on the track.
- 15:23So you know exactly how your vehicle is going to behave in those situations.
- 15:27So what's the progression like for returning drivers to auto interests?
- 15:32And I don't know if you use colors for your groups, do you
- 15:35use letters for your groups?
- 15:36How do you move from beginner to novice to intermediate?
- 15:40We'll use those designators, those labels for now.
- 15:43What's that like?
- 15:44Fun fact about me is I'm largely colorblind.
- 15:47You'll find that very purposely throughout our program, things
- 15:51are color coded, but they're also either using words or numbers.
- 15:56So that if there's anybody else that's colorblind, that that's not an issue,
- 16:01which I'll sidetrack a little bit.
- 16:03Somebody once didn't stop for a red flag because they told
- 16:05me they saw an orange flag.
- 16:07And as we know, there is no orange flag.
- 16:11it's worse when the red one looks green, right?
- 16:13That that's a bigger problem.
- 16:14Yeah, that's bad news, but yeah, anyway, back to the run
- 16:18groups and the progression.
- 16:19So our very first run group, there's two of them and I'll
- 16:23explain why there's a first timer.
- 16:26Which is pretty self explanatory.
- 16:27It's I've never been on a track before.
- 16:29It's my first time doing anything like this.
- 16:31Then we have what's called acclimation and acclimation is simply a half day
- 16:37version of the first timer program.
- 16:39If you think this is something that you want to do, but you know, you're not
- 16:42quite sure if it makes sense to spend the money or the full day commitment to
- 16:47all of the sessions for an entire day.
- 16:49You can basically do a half day program where you get two on track sessions and
- 16:53you get three classrooms and you get the car control and then you can decide,
- 16:57Hey, is this the right thing for me?
- 16:59Those are the two, you know, beginner level groups that we
- 17:02run first timer and acclimation.
- 17:04So then after that we get to novice.
- 17:08So our novice group is assumed to have experience.
- 17:11And that's something we really have to train our instructors on because
- 17:14if they've trained with other organizations to them, sometimes
- 17:17novice means that they're completely.
- 17:19Brand new.
- 17:20That's not the case with us.
- 17:21A novice means you've had some experience and linking that back to the technology
- 17:26in our online system, you have to be approved for a run group level.
- 17:31So if you go and you create a brand new account on our website, you can
- 17:35only access first timer or acclimation until you submit a driving resume.
- 17:39And get approved for a higher group.
- 17:40So we systematically enforce that to make sure people are in the right place.
- 17:45So then after that, we have novice solo.
- 17:49So that's pretty self explanatory.
- 17:50You're still at a novice pace.
- 17:52You're probably at the upper end of a novice pace on track, but you're safe
- 17:56enough and you have the situational awareness and everything else.
- 17:59That's necessary to not need an instructor with you and you've
- 18:03reached the level of self study.
- 18:04And by the way, all of this links back to our 88 point curriculum.
- 18:08So one of the pet peeves I always had is that our sign offs for
- 18:13run groups were subjective.
- 18:15So somebody would go for a checkride with an instructor and someone
- 18:19would just have to say, well, I think they're good to solo.
- 18:22Well, if you go into your account on our website, we've articulated exactly
- 18:27what that means and exactly which of those 88 skills you need to have
- 18:30mastered before you're moving on to solo.
- 18:33We've really taken a lot of time to build that out and make it very objective.
- 18:37So then after novice solo, you have intermediate and advanced, you know,
- 18:40again, those are of course broken down in the curriculum as well, uh, in the system.
- 18:44So when does the 88 point system stop when you reach intermediate or advanced?
- 18:50Like when do you complete that checklist?
- 18:53There's only 10 or 12 points in advanced, so it stops after advanced
- 18:58essentially, but the bulk of them are in the first timer and novice level.
- 19:02So it's very heavily weighted.
- 19:04There's 60 some that are in the first timer and novice
- 19:07level.
- 19:08And students on track, what's your average run group look like for those, you know,
- 19:13those two lower levels, let's just say.
- 19:15So we have a formula that we use that's 13 cars per mile.
- 19:19That's our maximum run group size.
- 19:20Okay.
- 19:20Thanks.
- 19:21And then, uh, we trim from that for the novice groups.
- 19:25We will take about 10 to 15 percent off for the novice groups,
- 19:29just depending on the track.
- 19:30You were mentioning, you know, the different run groups.
- 19:33You mentioned the first timers, the acclimation, novice,
- 19:36intermediate, uh, advanced.
- 19:38I'm assuming instructors might have their own run group or
- 19:41do they run with advanced?
- 19:42Well, what I'm trying to get at is it sounds like a lot of run groups.
- 19:45How much track time is somebody looking at?
- 19:47You know, on a one day basis, you know, if they come to one of your events.
- 19:50In aggregate, you're going to get two to two and a half hours of hot track time
- 19:55per day, and a large chunk of that does factor in what is usually a 40 to 45
- 20:00minute open session at the end of the day.
- 20:02Um, novices do have to qualify for that, and by that I don't mean a good lap time.
- 20:09I mean, a good safety record and a good situational awareness
- 20:13for the rest of the day.
- 20:14Instructors do have their own run group.
- 20:17There aren't a lot of those during the day though, because the instructors
- 20:20also have the right to drive in any other run group that they want to.
- 20:24But the instructor run group, those handful of sessions, are for the
- 20:27instructors to go at instructor speed if they want to do that.
- 20:30Because when they're driving in the other groups, They've got to
- 20:33hold the pace of those groups.
- 20:35Yeah, and you mentioned the, uh, the open session towards the end of the day.
- 20:38I'm assuming that runs at whatever the rules are of the lowest
- 20:41common denominator in the group.
- 20:43We follow
- 20:44intermediate rules for that.
- 20:45So if you're a novice and you're approved to go in the open group,
- 20:49you might gain a passing zone, but it's not going to be open passing.
- 20:53It's always passing zones.
- 20:54And you guys use point buys, right?
- 20:56Yes, always, always point buys every single run.
- 21:00Gotcha.
- 21:01And
- 21:01the
- 21:01student to instructor ratio, what's that like?
- 21:03Is it one to one?
- 21:04Is it two to one?
- 21:05In the first timer group and acclimation, it's one to one.
- 21:08In the novice group, it's two to one.
- 21:12If you're approved to be a novice driver.
- 21:14Then you'll have an instructor every other session.
- 21:17Since we're talking about coaching, let's dive into that a little bit more.
- 21:20Let's dive into that process.
- 21:21So, you know, a lot of us are now becoming more familiar with auto interests.
- 21:25How do we transition from existing groups like SCCA and NASA and Porsche
- 21:31club that have certification processes to an organization like yours?
- 21:34Is there reciprocity there?
- 21:36Do you accept the certifications that we already have?
- 21:38How does that whole process work?
- 21:40And what are the expectations of a coach Coming on board for
- 21:43the first time at auto interest.
- 21:45So from a coaching standpoint, there's been some industry initiatives
- 21:49to try to standardize that.
- 21:50It's one of those things that we've looked at those and we're not satisfied
- 21:55with where those programs are.
- 21:57You know, it's one of those things.
- 21:58Yes, there's reciprocity.
- 22:00It's kind of informal.
- 22:01You know, there's some groups that we're pretty close.
- 22:03I would say friends with more so than others, you know, specific
- 22:06chapters of certain organizations.
- 22:08You know, we've got a lot of overlap with.
- 22:10like NASA Great Lakes instructors.
- 22:12So there's a lot of these people that we know that that it's not
- 22:15hard to have one of our existing instructors kind of vouch for.
- 22:19When somebody comes in and they've instructed for maybe some PCA region that
- 22:24we've had no contact or experience with, we'll ask them to supply a resume, we'll
- 22:29ask them for references, check on those.
- 22:32I don't think we've ever had an instructor apply that that wasn't at a legitimate
- 22:36level with the Whatever other organization they've instructed with, but we we check
- 22:40those things because we're putting people in cars with people that have never done
- 22:45this before, and they've got to know that the person in that right seat is
- 22:48going to be giving him sound advice.
- 22:51And then from instructor recruitment standpoint, we
- 22:54actually have a 5 step instructor recruitment and mentorship program.
- 22:59So what we do each year is we talk to some of our advanced drivers that maybe
- 23:04have been advanced for, you know, three, four or more years at this point, and
- 23:09we'll find out, do you have the right attitude and desire to do some coaching?
- 23:15And if you do, and we feel like you have the right personality
- 23:18traits for that, then we have an instructor mentorship program.
- 23:22So we have levels one through five of instructors defined.
- 23:27Uh, in our program.
- 23:28So if we bring you in as a level one instructor, that's considered
- 23:32a level one mentorship program.
- 23:34If it's your first year ever instructing, you will have one of
- 23:37our senior instructors shadowing with you the entire step of the way.
- 23:41So you're never instructing on your own for the first time with us.
- 23:45We try to do at least three events where you're shadowed and working
- 23:49with one of the senior instructors.
- 23:51If everything's going well, the student feedback's good and everybody feels
- 23:55good about it, then we'll bump you up to a level two, which linking back
- 23:59to the other run groups, you know, we would consider a solo instructor.
- 24:02Then it kind of goes up from there.
- 24:04Now, the progression beyond that is really more based on your
- 24:07dedication to auto interest.
- 24:08So You know, are you coming to a significant number of events each season?
- 24:13Are you getting good reviews?
- 24:14Things like that.
- 24:15So it switches from, you know, general competency verification to, okay, how
- 24:20committed are you to our organization?
- 24:23Given the current times with COVID and everything, you mentioned in
- 24:26car instruction and everything.
- 24:27How are you all handling the instruction with last year's events and events
- 24:32moving forward this year with, you know, the restrictions and everything
- 24:35of COVID and the fears of getting in the right seat with somebody else
- 24:39in close proximity and all that?
- 24:40That's where we again, lean
- 24:42on our technology.
- 24:43So There's several things we did with our technology platform to manage COVID.
- 24:47One is we have a completely paperless and contactless check in system.
- 24:52So you can sign your waivers, tech forms, and everything digitally ahead of time.
- 24:56And that's all seamless.
- 24:57And at that same time, You're asked a question that you save in your
- 25:01profile that says, are you comfortable with NCAR instruction or would you
- 25:05prefer out of car instruction, or observational instruction we call it.
- 25:09And so you flag that preference in our system.
- 25:13If you do not flag a preference, we will just assume that you are not comfortable
- 25:16with NCAR and respond accordingly.
- 25:19And then we collect that same information from our instructors.
- 25:22So we ask the instructors and we say, Are you comfortable with doing in car
- 25:26instruction or would you prefer to support the observational program?
- 25:30So we very much believe in making that an individual choice.
- 25:34It's a personal responsibility thing.
- 25:36All indicators would say that that HPDE in general is a pretty low
- 25:40risk activity in terms of COVID.
- 25:42You've got Tons of airflow.
- 25:44You know, your windows are down going highway speeds are better around a track.
- 25:48You've got helmets on it's generally considered pretty low risk, but
- 25:52obviously we want to respect people's preferences and concerns and, you know,
- 25:57everybody knows their own personal.
- 25:59Medical and health situation better than anyone else.
- 26:02So that's how I managed that.
- 26:04And we also invested in some FM transmitters.
- 26:07So in our observational instruction, we can maintain communication with a student
- 26:12that is out there on their own, and then we can immediately communicate and
- 26:16correct any issues or anything like that.
- 26:18So when you mentioned FM transmitters, I'm thinking something along the lines
- 26:23of, I want to connect my phone to get my music and it connects to an FM channel.
- 26:26Am I way off base or is there's better technology out there?
- 26:30I'm a boomer.
- 26:30What can I say?
- 26:32Well, we, we tried to make it simple for, for the boomers and everybody.
- 26:37So it literally broadcasts on an FM radio frequency.
- 26:41So, um, it's a device that the instructor has.
- 26:45That's supporting the observational instruction, and they'll find a, an open
- 26:51FM frequency, you know, these aren't obviously powerful enough to build a radio
- 26:56station, but they're powerful enough to go, you know, a few thousand feet to a
- 27:01car that's on the same track as them.
- 27:03So we find a radio station that doesn't have anything in the local area.
- 27:07Uh, we set the transmitter to that, then in your car, you set your radio to that
- 27:12same channel or same frequency, and then we can communicate with you, and it's one
- 27:16way, but, you know, we found that that's sufficient, and the interesting thing
- 27:20was, we looked at that data throughout the course of the 2020 season, and over
- 27:2495 percent of people were okay with in car instruction, so it's It's actually been
- 27:29a pretty small group that we've done the observational with, but in the cases that
- 27:34we've done it, it's, it's worked out fine.
- 27:35And, you know, we've, we've made the best of it.
- 27:38So let's unpack this observational coaching a little bit more because
- 27:42I want to think I'm probably not the only one scratching my head going.
- 27:46When I think observational, I'm thinking standing at a corner, watching a car go by
- 27:50like a flagger, or is this a lead follow?
- 27:53I mean, how do you describe what it is that you do in this observational task?
- 27:57So we've
- 27:58done it as lead followed.
- 27:59I have kind of a trusted set of advisors with this.
- 28:02I don't like to decide these things myself.
- 28:05You know, we're doing a big enough volume of events and things like
- 28:07that, that, you know, I want other people's informed opinions in how
- 28:12we're formulating these policies.
- 28:14So we have a safety steward who has been race control at numerous
- 28:18different tracks for many, many years.
- 28:21Uh, we have co chief instructors, and then we have a cohort of senior
- 28:25instructors that support, you know, our mentorship program and all that.
- 28:29And those are the people that I confer with when developing those procedures.
- 28:32And so we came to the consensus that lead follow was the safest way to
- 28:36do the observational instruction, because then You know, we can
- 28:40get into at least a little bit of passing exercises, things like that.
- 28:43So you can do a little bit of like leapfrog with the
- 28:46instructor back and forth.
- 28:48Um, if the instructor is following behind and they see that, you know, there's a
- 28:51better line to take somewhere, they can communicate and conduct a pass and then.
- 28:57Show the students a line, then they can get back, let the student
- 29:00pass them, you know, let them try it and see how it progresses.
- 29:03I found that to be much more effective than the corner
- 29:05station type of observation.
- 29:07Um, I've actually participated in that.
- 29:10So that's something that I do personally is I, I go to other organizations and
- 29:14instruct and I try to do it with ones that use a variety of methodologies.
- 29:19Um, so that we're honing our craft and staying sharp and that when
- 29:24people are trying to advise me that I have some actual experience
- 29:28hands on with trying these things.
- 29:30So let's switch gears a little bit and let's talk about the,
- 29:33now you've got my interest.
- 29:34Like we've heard about all the really cool things that auto interests can do.
- 29:38And I want to come to an event.
- 29:40Where do I go to register?
- 29:41Do I go to MSR?
- 29:43Do I get a club registration or is it on your guys portal?
- 29:46What's the best way to find an event?
- 29:49The best way to find it is auto interest.
- 29:52com and that is with an S, but we do on both domain names in case you
- 29:55forget that part of the reason that we have our differentiator and in our
- 30:00online curriculum and our, you know, technology systems that support a lot
- 30:04of these things I've described is.
- 30:06The other platforms don't do it.
- 30:07So that's why we've built our own.
- 30:09We can do a better job of deeper engaging with participants
- 30:13by using our own platform.
- 30:15You know, we list our events on other platforms, but you can't sign up for
- 30:18them there because we need to collect the right information from the participants
- 30:22and have them directly in our systems to provide the best experience, you know,
- 30:27using all of these tools that we've built.
- 30:29With all these run groups throughout the day, we're looking at maybe an
- 30:32average of 18 to 22 minutes per session.
- 30:35Is that about right?
- 30:35We call them 20 minute sessions, but yeah, that's what they work out to.
- 30:39Every track has a little bit of nuance to that just because they
- 30:43may checkered in different locations and things like that, but they, we
- 30:46try to make them about 20 minutes.
- 30:48So if people are getting about 20 minutes of session, you say about
- 30:51two, two and a half hours a day.
- 30:53But what does that come out to, uh, for track time per dollar?
- 30:57The registration costs at our events directly reflect the,
- 31:01the cost to rent the track.
- 31:02You know, that's a common question we get is, well, why, you know,
- 31:05why is there such a big price difference per day or per weekend?
- 31:08It directly reflects the rental costs.
- 31:10I mean, some of these tracks are exorbitantly expensive to rent.
- 31:14Some of them aren't.
- 31:15But doing the math out in terms of You know, dollars per session, um,
- 31:20that's probably more complicated math than I can do in my head.
- 31:24Well, let's do it this way.
- 31:25What's the average cost per weekend that people would be looking at
- 31:29if they're interested in coming to an auto interest weekend?
- 31:32So per day, you know, on the lower end of the spectrum, you're
- 31:35going to be around 200 a day.
- 31:37Um, on the high end of the spectrum, it can go up to as much as 350,
- 31:41uh, some of the higher end tracks.
- 31:43Uh, the one thing I will say is, uh, we do have early discounts.
- 31:47So the earlier you register, we do things in price tiers.
- 31:51So those tiers are both time centric and based on the
- 31:55number of spots that are sold.
- 31:57So if an event is selling extremely quickly, the tier
- 32:00could advance more quickly.
- 32:02Generally, we hold them to the dates unless.
- 32:05We have a specific situation we have to deal with, but so on our website, you'll
- 32:09see, you know, tier one pricing is from this state to this state and then tier two
- 32:13and three, some of them have four tiers just because we tried to the higher cost
- 32:17tracks, break it down a little bit more, but for us, you know, the big thing that
- 32:21kills us is the weather watchers, right?
- 32:24Like everybody wants to have a bright, sunny weekend.
- 32:27You know, we're on the hook for the track rental costs.
- 32:30You know, regardless, we signed the contracts back in October and November.
- 32:33So we have no idea what's going to happen in, you know,
- 32:36May, June, July, and whenever.
- 32:37Um, so for us, it's kind of one of those things of, we offer the incentive to sign
- 32:41up early because if you commit early, then we feel a lot better about it.
- 32:45Um, that we're making our nugget that we have to get over for that.
- 32:49But actually that feels like a good time to bring up the fact that we do offer
- 32:53something we call HPDE protection plans.
- 32:55So that's something unique to us as well.
- 32:58It does not cover your car, it has nothing to do with, you know, on track
- 33:01insurance, but what it is, is we will cover the cost of lost track time.
- 33:06So, if it rains, if you break something, if you get sick and you can't come to
- 33:11the track, if you have a death in the family, and a variety of other factors,
- 33:15you can buy the HPD protection plan.
- 33:17It usually costs somewhere around 10 percent of the total.
- 33:21Registration costs.
- 33:22It's, it's very similar in price to like travel protection with an
- 33:26airline or something like that.
- 33:27We tried to price it kind of on the lower end of that spectrum, but that's
- 33:31something that as far as I know, no other organization offers and that is extremely
- 33:36unique and the reason we did that is.
- 33:38You know, things happen and we have a history of being fairly generous with
- 33:43what we call courtesy credits, because we do feel bad when those things happen,
- 33:46but, you know, we can't eat all of those.
- 33:49And we try to be generous and as much as we can, but there are times we've been
- 33:54taken advantage of with things like that.
- 33:56So we thought, why don't we put a program together to.
- 34:00Make this a systematic thing with a defined benefit.
- 34:03And then everybody feels good about it.
- 34:05So in anticipation of my first event with auto interest, right?
- 34:09So I've done my registration through, I've set up my profile.
- 34:12I've done all this stuff through the portal and through
- 34:14the website and whatnot.
- 34:15What comes next?
- 34:16Do I tech my car?
- 34:18Do I just wait for a packet to show up via email?
- 34:21What's the next set of tasks that are going to be delivered?
- 34:24There's two ways to find that.
- 34:27There is a pre event guide that's posted on our website that really spells out in
- 34:31granular detail, uh, how all that works, but you'll also receive about one week
- 34:36prior to the event, a pre event email.
- 34:39It's basically all the information that is in the pre event guide, with the exception
- 34:44that if there's any locally specific things going on, you know, at that time
- 34:48with a particular venue, uh, you'll want to watch for that in the pre event email.
- 34:52Generally speaking, the flow of activity at our events is
- 34:56consistent across the board.
- 34:58We try to, you know, make it easy.
- 34:59It's just kind of like, if you look at any franchise like McDonald's,
- 35:03if you come to one event, then you know what to expect at all of them.
- 35:06So we start the day off with a tech inspection.
- 35:09It's generally from 7 to 8 AM.
- 35:11The times vary a little bit per track, just because there's a little bit of.
- 35:15Schedule deviation from time to time, but usually it's 7 to 8 a.
- 35:18m.
- 35:19Tech inspection process is really streamlined.
- 35:22If you go on our website into your account and fill out what we call your pre check
- 35:27in, then you can complete the waiver.
- 35:30You can complete your tech form.
- 35:32So when you show up for tech inspection, you're completely contactless and kind
- 35:37of a drive through sort of format.
- 35:38Tech inspectors will have you pop your hood, open your trunk.
- 35:41You know, they'll do a look around for any leaking fluids, check the condition
- 35:44of your tires, things like that.
- 35:46You know, we don't disassemble things from the car in tech inspection.
- 35:50So we'll check everything that we can see.
- 35:53And, uh, we check your helmet to make sure you have a current spec helmet.
- 35:57Uh, once you go through tech inspection, you kind of claim your paddock space.
- 36:01You can claim your paddock space either before or after tech inspection.
- 36:04So if you want to unload before you go through the tech inspection, you
- 36:07can do that, or if you just want to show up at the track, drive through
- 36:10and then go unload, it's, it's up to you how you want to do that.
- 36:13And then we start the day with the driver's meeting.
- 36:15Are coaches self teching or do they go through tech as well?
- 36:19Coaches self tech.
- 36:20We've got all this down, you know, we've got our tech inspection, we got
- 36:23our pre flight checklist, we've gone through all these portals and all this
- 36:26kind of stuff, but you know, the hot ticket these days, the thing that's
- 36:29on everybody's mind is always safety.
- 36:31And so one of the things that has come up in the last few years is
- 36:34this concept of track insurance.
- 36:36And we had four.
- 36:38Folks from locked in on here to explain how all that works
- 36:41and gory detail and whatnot.
- 36:42And we've asked many providers, is it something that you recommend your
- 36:46students invest in or something you get?
- 36:48And then the second side of that question is, is there a provider that you.
- 36:53Position during registration, say, Hey, you know, go check these guys
- 36:57out and get your track insurance.
- 36:58Is it part of registration?
- 37:00You know, a lot of folks are now bundling it in as part of the weekend
- 37:03fees, you know, things like that.
- 37:04So let's talk about your thoughts on track insurance and then how
- 37:07does that work in the greater context of an auto interest weekend?
- 37:11Sure.
- 37:11So the purchase of track insurance is definitely.
- 37:15a very personal risk assessment or risk tolerance type of exercise.
- 37:20So, you know, there's a portion of our drivers that have dedicated track
- 37:24cars and, you know, some of them are very expensive, some aren't.
- 37:28What I generally tell people is if you are driving a car on the track
- 37:33that you need to get to work on Monday, and especially if it's not
- 37:37paid off, buy the track insurance.
- 37:39If you have a dedicated track car and you know, maybe it's a Craigslist
- 37:43Miata or a Facebook marketplace.
- 37:47You know, whatever, you know, inexpensive older car and you can
- 37:51afford to just lose it if something happens, that's a good spot to be in.
- 37:55Honestly, if you can swing a dedicated track car, I'd always recommend it.
- 37:59Definitely not necessary for first timers, but as you progress in your building
- 38:02speed, that's always something I I'd ask people to just at least consider it.
- 38:07Um, it's not a huge deal, but I know that the, the experience definitely
- 38:11changes, but to directly answer the insurance question, those are the
- 38:15considerations that I tell people to think about, um, you know, do I need
- 38:19this car to get to work on Monday?
- 38:20Do I still owe money on it that struggle to financially handle if I couldn't
- 38:25drive it or if it was a loss now?
- 38:29I also don't want to scare people at the same time.
- 38:31Our incident rate on average throughout a season is less than one percent.
- 38:35And by incident rate, I mean something that causes some kind of damage to a car.
- 38:41So it could be driver error.
- 38:43It could be, you know, a light brush of a tire wall.
- 38:47You know, in the vast majority of our incidents, are very minor.
- 38:51We've knock on wood, never ever had to have somebody leave in an
- 38:55ambulance, never had a serious injury.
- 38:57The only exception to leaving an ambulance is we had a guy who had a
- 39:00heart attack, but it had nothing to do with what was going on on track.
- 39:03Uh, so kind of an anomaly, but it was a good thing he was at an event where there
- 39:07was an ambulance that kind of worked out.
- 39:09It's generally a low risk exercise.
- 39:11I mean, I think statistically speaking, you probably have greater risk of
- 39:16having an incident on the street.
- 39:17Just because of all the distracted driving and unknown factors of animals
- 39:22and whatever else is out there, um, you know, I haven't run any official
- 39:26numbers on it, but that's my opinion.
- 39:28And it's also what you make of it.
- 39:30So if in the back of your mind, you know that, you know, Hey, maybe I
- 39:34don't have money on this car, but I don't need to drive it to work Monday,
- 39:37but it still was a lot of money for me, then drive it to reflect that.
- 39:41You know, don't go full bore and, you know, it's something you can control.
- 39:45So that's kind of the main point is you need to take a minute
- 39:48to assess your personal risk tolerance and respond accordingly.
- 39:53So do you recommend people just go discover a track insurance
- 39:56provider on their own, or does auto interest recommended, or again, is
- 40:00it part of the registration process?
- 40:02Yeah, it's, it is not part of the registration process, uh, but we
- 40:06do partner with Hagerty for that.
- 40:08In the rare instances that somebody has had a claim, we've received the
- 40:12feedback that they were very good to work with, like no issue with the
- 40:16claims, you know, and they, they do provide some support to our program.
- 40:20So it's in full disclosure, they do support our program, but we only partner
- 40:25with organizations that we believe in.
- 40:26There's a reason that we chose them.
- 40:29You know, we, we used to partner with other providers.
- 40:31There's a reason that we recommend Hagerty at this point.
- 40:35Makes sense.
- 40:36Yeah.
- 40:36We've talked about a lot of stuff.
- 40:38We've covered a lot of things.
- 40:39There's some really unique pieces of technology, processes,
- 40:43procedures within auto interest.
- 40:44Is there anything else that we're not aware of yet that you want to tell
- 40:48us about, you want to share maybe something that's upcoming new for
- 40:51this season or anything like that?
- 40:53There's a couple of things.
- 40:54So one is our spec Panther series.
- 40:56So if you look at, uh, I think I know what this is.
- 41:00The, we, we did kind of a soft launch of it in 2020 COVID kind of messed
- 41:06up our plans for that a little bit, but we're doing a We'll just say
- 41:09a firm launch of it in 2021, and it's the Ford Crown Vic platform.
- 41:15So that Ford called that the Panther platform internally, their name for it.
- 41:20So we have a race series built around that.
- 41:22So we've got about 10 teams already built.
- 41:25So on certain event dates, there is a SpecPanther run group baked into that.
- 41:30And we try to work out the schedule so that nobody is really
- 41:33losing track time over that.
- 41:34You know, so we'll add some extra time on if we have to,
- 41:37or something to make up for it.
- 41:38But yeah, the SpecPanther thing's really fun.
- 41:41I have one of those cars.
- 41:42Um, I mean, they're just, you can't help but love them.
- 41:45The laugh the whole time you're driving it and it's
- 41:49so much better than spec Miata, Eric, I'm telling you,
- 41:52I mean, anything with the V8, right?
- 41:54It's like, come on, are
- 41:55you, are you requiring competition license for that series?
- 41:59Kind of, here's what we're doing for that series.
- 42:01So for 2020, it was basically just our instructors.
- 42:06And then.
- 42:06Um, a handpicked group of, of others that the instructors know.
- 42:11So we're actually putting on a competition school, uh, with Tommy Byrne, if you're
- 42:15familiar with him in May at Nelson Ledges.
- 42:18And so we're going to open up Spec Panther for any intermediate or higher
- 42:22drivers, and they have to either attend that competition school or hold a comp
- 42:28license from another organization.
- 42:30In order to participate in it and then at Nelson and Gingerman, we have
- 42:34really good relationships with both of them from an operation standpoint,
- 42:38we, we actually, our safety steward runs race control at those events.
- 42:43And so we, you know, we hired their corner worker crew, but we also
- 42:47have a fully equipped safety truck and we do our own safety toes and
- 42:51dispatches and all that because we, we try to very tightly integrate.
- 42:55At some of the other tracks like Pit Race or Mid Ohio where they
- 42:58have the fully equipped safety crews, we don't have to do as much.
- 43:02But, you know, again, kind of setting the expectation of what
- 43:06the consistent minimum standard is.
- 43:09You know, that's why we outfitted a safety truck and everything because
- 43:12not every truck has what we feel is the right caliber of equipment.
- 43:16Makes sense.
- 43:17So you said there were a couple things.
- 43:19What else is on the list?
- 43:20Uh, so the other interesting thing is a little less exciting to motorsports
- 43:24people probably, but in the technology world, um, our trackside platform
- 43:28that we've built, uh, we've now taken to market as a standalone product.
- 43:32So, uh, we have some racetracks and sanctioning organizations and
- 43:37things like that that are going to be using that coming up in 2021.
- 43:40So that's something that we're making available for other
- 43:43motorsports organizations to use.
- 43:45Very cool.
- 43:46Well, congratulations on that.
- 43:48Thank you.
- 43:49This is what happens when IT nerds run a DE organization.
- 43:52I'm just going to point it out.
- 43:53Yeah,
- 43:53it is.
- 43:54Yeah, that is exactly what happens.
- 43:58So as we wrap this up, Jason, this has been really informative, probably
- 44:02enlightening for a lot of people, especially in our area that are hearing
- 44:05about auto interest for the first time.
- 44:06First time.
- 44:06I think this is really cool and we're excited to get together with you
- 44:10guys here throughout the 2021 season.
- 44:12So I wanted to give you the opportunity to do your own shout outs to any, your
- 44:15sponsors, any partners, anybody you wanted to thank while you still have the mic.
- 44:20Uh, yeah, I appreciate that.
- 44:22And.
- 44:22I for sure have to send a big thank you to Summit Racing Equipment.
- 44:26They've been a presenting partner of ours for, uh, I think
- 44:30we're in the fourth year now.
- 44:31They give a lot of support to our program.
- 44:33They've been an anchor to our Driving Rewards program, which I think is
- 44:37something I forgot to talk about.
- 44:38So that's another program within our organization where every day of every
- 44:43event, all season long, we pick a safest driver, a most improved driver.
- 44:47And a good sportsmanship award and summit kicks in gift cards
- 44:51and swag for those individuals.
- 44:52So there's three people that win every single day of every event all season.
- 44:57So that's a really cool program.
- 44:58They kick into that.
- 44:59That's also unique to us.
- 45:01Hawk performance breaks.
- 45:03They've been a partner now for a couple of years.
- 45:05And, uh, so they've been very supportive.
- 45:08They're kicking in some swag and some other items.
- 45:10We also have four auto interest drivers at 30 percent discount on all Hawk products.
- 45:16That's a really cool thing.
- 45:17And you know, the last one is a Malco products.
- 45:20So they are based in Barberton, Ohio.
- 45:22They're pretty local to us, but they manufacture a professional
- 45:25line of detailing products.
- 45:27So if you need to get all the rubber chunks and everything off your car.
- 45:32After a day at the track, they've got the stuff to do it.
- 45:35And, um, they've been a really good partner too.
- 45:37So Jason, I can't thank you enough for coming on the show.
- 45:40Like I said, this has been super informative.
- 45:42It's given us an insight into yet another group that's out there in the
- 45:45HPDE world that we didn't realize.
- 45:48That we had so much in common with and that has been around for so long.
- 45:52So for everybody out there, that's listening, if you want more details on
- 45:56auto interests and their program, visit auto interests with an S dot com, or
- 46:02follow them on Facebook and on Instagram at auto interests LLC, or use their
- 46:07online contact us form on their website.
- 46:10So again, Jason, thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 46:12This has been fantastic.
- 46:14Yeah, thank you.
- 46:15And one last thing I'd like to throw in, um, for your listeners
- 46:18too, we are offering a 10 percent discount on our summit point, uh,
- 46:22season opener to your listeners.
- 46:24So if you use the coupon code GTM on auto interest.
- 46:28com for that summit point season opener, April 24th and 25th,
- 46:33that'll give them 10 percent off.
- 46:34Awesome.
- 46:35Well, thank you for that.
- 46:35We really do appreciate it.
- 46:37We hope to see you there.
- 46:38Will you be attending that event?
- 46:40Yeah,
- 46:40I'll be there.
- 46:41Awesome.
- 46:42Well, great.
- 46:42Thank you so much.
- 46:44Thanks guys.
