Latest / Oral Surgery Answers with Dr. Juan Lopez / Dental Implants vs. Dentures: What You’ll Wish You Knew Later
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If the only difference between dentures and implants were the price, I'll tell you a lot more people to get denture, but that's not the difference.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: The difference shows up every time you eat.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: It's in the roof of your mouth.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And over time it's happening in the bone underneath the denture, even though you cannot see it.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: So none of these will appear on the price quote.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: That's a reality.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: So I'm Dr.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Juan G.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Lopez, I'm an URL and maxillo patient surgeon in South Florida, and I had this conversation across the desk more times than I can even imagine.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: And it's a very typical question for a lot of patients.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're looking for a denture because it's cheaper or it's thousand less than implants, here's what I want you to compare before you make that decision.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Let's start where it shows first, which is dinner time.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: When you go to a restaurant and you're wearing dentures, the first thing you see at the menu is what can you eat?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Because with dentures, you won't choose the steak.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: You already know you want a steak, but you cannot have it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So it's the fish again.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You're not even thinking about the prices.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You know that you got a denture and you won't be able to eat a steak.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So again, it's the fish.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, this happens every meal.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: It limits the menu of that patient for the rest of the life.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: But you know, most people don't realize this before they engage into denture.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you, it's not only steak, it's corn on the cup, it's an apple that you have to slice it because you cannot have it whole, or it's sticky foods.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And why is sticky foods?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Because a sticky food will actually lift the denture in one side and you will have something rocking all the time.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The real reason is because the denture sits on the gun.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: It's held there by suction and by adhesive.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So when you push down hard on one side, the other side lifts.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: What are you biting into?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: The denture will hold as well as the suction underneath.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Now, with implants, you can eat anything and everything.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: There's nothing to lift, and that's because the post is in the bone.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Now there's something else about an upper denture that nobody wants you about.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And it has nothing to do with chewing.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: A denture covers the roof of your mouth.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: It has to because that's the way it works, where the suction comes from.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: That's the surface that you have to deal in every meal.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Now you're in a lot of it's under plastic.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So the food would taste flatter.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Hot and cold feel different.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And you know, patients tell me the first thing they noticed wasn't the chewing at all.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Nothing case the way it was supposed to be.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: That gets frustrated.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Some people get used to it, but some people never do.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: The other thing that we think about when we talk about dentures is Sam.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Speech.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Now you have a thick denture in your mouth, and your tongue needs the roof of your mouth to get some certain sounds.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But now you have plastic and it's heavier, it's a quarter heavier down than the tongue spec.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So your speech is different.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: With an implant supported upper denture, you know, it doesn't have to cover the palate.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: It doesn't rely on suction.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: The roof of your mouth stays uncovered.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And that's important because you can taste your food.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And if nobody puts that on a quote either, well, it's for the rest of your life.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: So eating is the first massive difference that you will notice between dentures and implants.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Now, under every tooth there is bone.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It's called the alveolar bone.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Once you lose the tooth, that bone is gonna reabsorb, it's gonna get smaller, and per se is gonna have a denture that is gonna be very rocky, ill-fitting, that you have to replace every two years or every three years.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And it's not because the tube is or the denture is changing, it's because the ridge is changing.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: There is no bone anymore.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: The bone is signaling that you don't have any function when the tube was removed and it tends to disappear.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: That's called a process called reabsorption.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: At the beginning, you won't happen to notice, but then once the denture starts getting rock or stands getting loose, you think it's the denture, but it's not.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It's basically the bone.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: You get more adhesive to have better suction, or you have to change your denture.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And that denture has to adapt to a smaller ridge.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: A denture speeds up ribsorption because all the time it's resting on the ridge, and that exerts pressure on that ridge.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So you're in a cycle.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: The more you use a denture, the more the bone is gonna disappear, the more the dentures get looser, and the more you're gonna use a diet.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: While an implant is the opposite situation, the post goes into the bone and the bone attaches to the post.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: So now you have a root, which is the pose, and in front you have a tooth that is gonna act as a natural tooth.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: It makes you feel better, you don't have to remove it, and you will have the same exactly taste when you have your teeth.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: So that's why that's the main reason I tell everybody if you're gonna replace a tooth, replace it because the bone is gonna start to disappear.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: And although it's in the back, let's say it's a tooth in the back, and you think, well, it's not important, it's not aesthetics, the bone disappears or reabsorbed.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So if you're trying to make a decision about implants and you want to know what actually left to work in your job, there's a link in the description to set an assessment in South Florida.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Besides all these major things, there's a lot of smaller things that nobody mentions until you're living into a denture.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: The adhesive.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Just imagine every morning gluing your denture so it stays put.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Every time you're trying to figure out, okay, I have to put more adhesive in this area because otherwise it will move.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And I have important dinners or I have important lunch.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I don't want that denture to get loose.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And this is for the rest of your life.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So you have to think about it.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Hygiene.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: A lot of people are very concerned about hygiene.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Dentures will get food underneath, and when the food gets underneath, bacteria will grow.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Bad breath is what is gonna happen.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: It's called allitosis.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: One of the things patients get quite frustrated about.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: They clean the denture, but every time you eat, you have food inside.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: That's something that is very concerning for the patient.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Also, and now at this time, aesthetics are an important thing.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: When you have a denture, you look older.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: The distance between the nose and the chin will get diminished.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: The lips go inward, and you're adding at least 10 years to your face.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: The face is changing.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Now, a lot of people choose a denture because it costs less upfront.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And for maybe for a lot of people, that isn't a preference, it's just the real situation.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: They also think, okay, it doesn't require surgery, dentures will be faster to have than implants, or I have a medical condition that doesn't allow me to have surgery.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It's not true.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: But although a denture can be made in weeks and implants take longer because the bone has to attach to the post, it's worth it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And there are major differences in what life is with dentures versus implants.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: The thing is that most people never think about it or never think what will I actually look with a denture.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: They only look at what is cheaper.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: If we're choosing iPhones, big cars, let's choose for our help.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And remember, dentures and implants, they don't do the same job.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Implants replace the teeth.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Implants give you aesthetics, while dentures will cover the space where a tube used to be.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Now there's another thing that I want to let you know.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Let's think, okay, I lose 30 teeth or 32 teeth, I have to place 32 implants.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Not really.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You can place a strategic implant in the mouth where you can do bridges.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: It will serve two purposes.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: One purpose is to maintain the rich, the bone, and you can have natural teeth again.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: You can have teeth that don't have to come out at night.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: So with two quotes in front of you, the question shouldn't be which one costs less.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: That's where I'm going.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: You already know which one costs less.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: The question is what I will be eating in 10 years, or how my bone is gonna be in 10 years.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Think about it.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: In 10 years, you're gonna be wearing a denture, the bone is gonna get reabsorbed, and every time you go to have dinner, you're gonna think about it.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Now, if a denture is getting looser because you're already in a denture, remember it's not the denture that's wearing out, it's the rich that is getting smaller and smaller and smaller.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Having a denture change your social life.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Having a denture gets you the inability or the prejudice not to go and have dinner with your friends.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Because you think, okay, the denture is gonna get loose.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: I cannot eat but blenderized food, I cannot have but soup.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Remember, a denture covers the space while an implant replaces the tooth.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Two different products and they provide very different life experience.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Now, before anybody puts an implant in you, there are four things I wanna check first.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And one of them comes up far more often than the rest.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: If you've been quoted for implants, that's the one I want you to know about before using anything.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: And I did a whole video on that list.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Start there.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Research yourself.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Think on how you're gonna be in the future.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: And if nobody has explained the difference between or the way I'm explaining to you, you know, hit subscribe.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: That's what this channel is for.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And if you're in South Florida, there's a link in the description to set a consultation, including those that being told no, you don't have bone, you cannot have implants.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Not true.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: There's always something to do.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And I wanna encourage you to come for a consultation so we can plan on having you a better life.
