- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for joining me on this adventure,
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: and welcome to Podcast 19 of the Street Smart Naturalist,
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Ode to My Naturalist,
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: April 10,
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: 2025.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Hello from Marjorie, the wife, often referred to in David's writing.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: In honor of David's birthday week,
- 0:59I offered to write a newsletter and give readers some insight
- 1:03into the man behind
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: the street smart naturalist.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Back to normal next week.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Someone recently said to me, gosh, David must be fun to live with.
- 1:12This was during a walk when he spotted a hawk perched on a rock
- 1:16cliff 75 feet above us.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: The rest of us barely saw the rock, much less the bird.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, living with a supernaturalist is fun.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: He expands my world beyond my literal myopic range.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: The bird spotting knack is most notable.
- 1:32Whether at highway speeds,
- 1:33on a walk,
- 1:34or on a beach,
- 1:35you can count on David to notice a bird.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: In the car,
- 1:38he will often just say a number to indicate that he is adding
- 1:41this one to the count
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: of how many red-tailed hawks he has seen that day.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: On a walk,
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I am usually busy watching where I put my feet,
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: fiddling with a contact lens,
- 1:51or catching my breath while David merrily saunters with his
- 1:54eyes to the sky.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: His visual acuity also works well in wilder spots,
- 1:59such as the time we were hiking on Mount Baker and he saw a
- 2:02marmot several hundred
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: feet away in the middle of a field of boulders.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: When I am out with him,
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: it is remarkable when I spot something first and often merits a hearty,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: nice work from him.
- 2:14Actually,
- 2:15it's remarkable even if I spot something that David is pointing to.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: One aspect of David is that he retains only certain information.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: The facts that stick in his brain include rock names and ages,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: desert plant names,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: vital statistics about the Denny Reed grade,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: sports trivia from the 1970s,
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: highlights of bike races,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: our anniversary date,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: and many embarrassing stories about friends.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: He is also not embarrassed about poking fun at himself.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Facts that do not stick include names and uses of medicines,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: where to place commas,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: names of musicians and artists,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: and distinguishing features of different types of shoes and clothing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: To me, this illustrates the beauty and diversity of paying attention.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: We notice what we care about, what we have learned to name.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: My friend Catherine put it eloquently.
- 3:06Until you learn to see something,
- 3:07it is invisible or exists in a mass of sameness.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Once you can give a name or make another connection,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: you can notice and pick your item out of the crowd.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: If you have been reading David's newsletter,
- 3:19you know he is curious about many things and loves to find out
- 3:23more about those things.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Writing the newsletter has sharpened his noticing.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Gotta have some content every week, so gotta look for ideas.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The everyday and the unusual are equally viable topics.
- 3:36You may recall the joys of repeat travel or the March 20th CSI
- 3:40crime scene investigation,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: the everyday and the unusual,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: both probed for connections and answers.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: As I am often present at the events that lead to newsletters,
- 3:51I can tell you of David's genuine excitement at seeing dead
- 3:54animals and sympathy
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: for their plight as he moved them off the road to rest in peace.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Again,
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: I was minding my own business,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: trying not to trip,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: and then got swept into the curiosity about the events.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Luckily, I would rather talk about spiders than many other topics.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: An insight into his process.
- 4:12There is no notebook of pre-written newsletters automated to
- 4:15drop at 5.59am every Thursday.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: That is really him,
- 4:19writing something new every week and being ready to push send
- 4:22at dawn every Thursday.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Actually, I'm just guessing it's dawn.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I am asleep at that hour.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: One last example on the art of paying attention.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: We were walking on a trail in the desert a few weeks ago.
- 4:34David looked down and spotted a sewing needle among the cactus
- 4:38debris on the side
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: of a trail,
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: literally finding a needle in a needle stack,
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: as my brother remarked.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Like I said, super naturalist, super fun.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Wow, Marjorie, thanks.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Once again,
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: this is David B.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Williams,
- 4:54author and voice of the Street Smart Naturalist Explorations of
- 4:58the Urban Kind,

- 5:02natural world around Seattle,
