- 0:06Hello, What's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10I specialize in failing naturally.
- 0:14Well, don't know what your least favorite scary movie The
- 0:17podcasts are We talking about? The good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:20the absurd. And all of our favorite and
- 0:22least favorite scary movies, because we believe every horror
- 0:25movie rightfully has is fanbase. Even if we don't always get it,
- 0:28My name is Travis, my name is Jesse, and today we are diving
- 0:32into some more recent horror 2023's Infinity Pool.
- 0:37But legacy writer director Brandon Cronenberg, son of.
- 0:43Yes, you guessed it. That Cronenberg.
- 0:46You're gonna say Brandon Lee Cronenberg, son.
- 0:50Just for me, Cronenberg, son. Yeah, because that's the energy
- 0:57that you need to approach with this movie, right?
- 0:59Absolutely. I hope Papa's proud.
- 1:02Yeah, me too. Man.
- 1:03I'm surprised we haven't talked about like more Cronenberg the
- 1:07elder Cronenberg before. The fly a fuck we have.
- 1:11Never mind, Okay, almost a year ago.
- 1:13Exactly, Okay. So first announcements, our
- 1:19schedule came out late because we were celebrating the start of
- 1:21Halloween season. Duh.
- 1:23Yeah, but we did have it made-up for quite a while, so.
- 1:27You know, there is that. But that means that, surprise,
- 1:29we had our tube Here not to be bonus episode this week and it
- 1:32actually kicked off September for us.
- 1:34That's right. So you're covering the resort,
- 1:36which thematically ties into this movie, though not
- 1:39intentionally in any way, shape or form.
- 1:41I just am feeling Island Horror lately.
- 1:44Yeah, we have actually watched at least three this past week,
- 1:48so. Yes, if you haven't seen
- 1:49influence around Shutter yet, would recommend absolutely.
- 1:52It's a good time. But it's I like, I had that vibe
- 1:56in my head and I was like. We're gonna watch the Resort for
- 1:58two here not to be. So go ahead and check that out,
- 2:02get our thoughts on that, and decide to check out the movie
- 2:05for yourself and form your own opinion on it.
- 2:07Yes, please do. Then message us on social media
- 2:10and telling us how you feel about it.
- 2:11Yes, please do. Yeah.
- 2:13Cuz I really wanna hear. I wanna hear all sides of it.
- 2:15If you've seen the resort, please let us know, cuz I'm
- 2:17curious to hear what other people have to think about that.
- 2:19One, yes. All right.
- 2:21But before we get to this week's episode, do you want to share
- 2:24some poll results? I sure do.
- 2:26Travie Whabi, Yes, Yes. OK, so we did our episode on 28
- 2:31Days Later last week. So this time we did a choose
- 2:35your character. We wanted to know.
- 2:38I and I hope everybody like just the like, loading screen, the
- 2:41idol, like, yeah, my scene where everybody's just like standing
- 2:44up. And squatting a little bit,
- 2:45Yeah, whenever I did that, I shared the little Smash Bros
- 2:49character selects. It's my jam right there.
- 2:52So yeah, we just wanted to know out of 28 Days later, who would
- 2:56you be out of the protagonists that we get?
- 2:59So your options were James or is it James or Jim?
- 3:06I think he goes by Jim. Jim, yes.
- 3:08But I feel like James is probably his legal name.
- 3:10Yeah. OK, Jim.
- 3:11Jimothy, Jimothy, Selena, Frank, or Hannah?
- 3:15So on Instagram, 67% were Jim, 22 were Selena, eleven were
- 3:22Frank, and zero were Hannah. And then over on Twitter, 17
- 3:27were Jim, Fifty were Selena, 17 were Frank, 16 were Hannah.
- 3:34Realistically, I would probably be Canada.
- 3:37Like, I want to be badass like Selena, but I feel like I'd have
- 3:40to build up to that. But I do think I'd want to do
- 3:42the whole like, hey, we all do need each other, but also we
- 3:44need to be pragmatic to survive. Yeah, I I feel like, like I said
- 3:53the last time, I, you know, maybe a Frank, I don't know,
- 3:56just try and like, have a good time.
- 3:57Yeah. You know, be nice.
- 3:59Off road cab. That's your chance to do it
- 4:02right there. The apocalypse.
- 4:04Just fucking ramp that shit. By the way, I don't know if
- 4:08we'll continue to do polls on Twitter because I just saw
- 4:13recently that they're going to only let verify people vote on
- 4:16those. I know they announced that a
- 4:18while back and it didn't go into effect on the previous date.
- 4:22So I wonder if that's, yeah, we're also just Speaking of
- 4:26Twitter because they are going to start.
- 4:29Stealing information for AI purposes?
- 4:34Not only that. If you like our trailers and you
- 4:36like Travis's artwork, you're going to need to just look for
- 4:38that on our other social media accounts, because we don't want.
- 4:43His work to be claimed by Twitter.
- 4:45Yeah, I just. And I don't want our voices.
- 4:47And I don't want our voices for AI purposes.
- 4:49But definitely don't want that. So yeah, they announced that at
- 4:53like the end of September, if you post an image or anything on
- 4:57Twitter, you are giving them the licensing, like the ability to
- 5:02use that and claim it and use it for their own purpose.
- 5:05So I don't like that. Yeah, I'm gonna do that.
- 5:08So I'm getting more and more fed up with Twitter, and I'm
- 5:11honestly, yeah, just considering stopping with it entirely.
- 5:14Yeah, So I it's it's getting concerning.
- 5:18And yeah, we've already joined some other social media apps
- 5:22that'll give you that fix with, you know, some not shitty
- 5:24people. And I have to get back into
- 5:26Discord again, some way. I can join some of the groups
- 5:30that I like, like Mutant Fam and the Pod Latham Lead 'em Pod like
- 5:33any of the Yeah. Or we can have our own discord
- 5:36too. You know what I mean.
- 5:37Oh my God. I can't handle modding a disc
- 5:39word. Well, yeah, OK, so I just can't.
- 5:42Maybe down the line. I don't know.
- 5:44All right. Anyway, that's it.
- 5:46Are we ready to talk about s s titties?
- 5:50Titties. SST titties SST.
- 5:53CTS. Yep, Yep.
- 5:54Let's do it. OK, Infinity pool premiered.
- 5:59January 21st, 2023 at Sundance Film Festival with a ride
- 6:03released a week later. Really.
- 6:06Yeah, what the fuck? How did that happen?
- 6:08I don't know because I saw like Sundance Film Festival in
- 6:11January and I was like, I feel like we watched this in January.
- 6:14That was correct. Yeah.
- 6:15Don't they, like, usually do that stuff that way they dance?
- 6:19Yeah. Well, they do that for, like,
- 6:21studios to buy the movies to distribute, Right.
- 6:25That's what I always thought, I guess.
- 6:26I don't know. I don't obviously submit things
- 6:29to festivals. He said Fuck you, I'm a
- 6:33Cronenberg, yeah. I'm just here to show off.
- 6:36You all have heard of mine, Betty.
- 6:39Betty We watched it on Hulu, which is currently the only
- 6:44streaming service it is on, but you can also rent it from Red
- 6:46Box Prime, Voodoo, Google Player, YouTube written and
- 6:50directed by Brandon Cronenberg, music by Tim Hecker, and special
- 6:54effects makeup by 13 Finger Effects.
- 6:57Good job on their part. Sorry if you can hear Zoe
- 7:00meowing in the background, but she thinks that anytime we're
- 7:04recording that means that it's dinner time.
- 7:06Well, she's she throws a fit because she can't be with us and
- 7:09I don't. She just doesn't care for that.
- 7:12Yeah, it's it's a mixture of closed doors.
- 7:14And yeah, she hates closed doors, and she hates not having
- 7:16food in her bowl. And right now, there's both.
- 7:19OK, starring Alexander Skarsgard is James Foster.
- 7:23Cleopatra Coleman is M Foster. Mia Goth is Gabby Bauer.
- 7:28Jaleel Lesper is Alden Bauer. And Thomas Crashman is Detective
- 7:32Thresh. All right, Travis, time for our
- 7:35favorite game. Budget Oh, but.
- 7:39Dad, isn't it so nice to do that together instead of going rogue
- 7:42and doing it on your own? Yeah, sometimes Rogue is.
- 7:44Fun, especially whenever you're unhinged.
- 7:47But yeah, OK, I think I have a feeling that this is, like,
- 7:56barely budget. OK, so there wasn't actually a
- 8:01budget listener on IMDb or Wikipedia, according to another
- 8:05source. It is a $4.5 million budget.
- 8:10Wow, that's really low. Yeah, honestly.
- 8:13Opening box office of 2.5 million and a worldwide gross of
- 8:165.2 million. Wow, I can't believe it barely
- 8:19made any money. I know, it was like that was a
- 8:21wide release, right? Yeah, I'm pretty sure, huh?
- 8:24But I also it's one of those weird ones that I could see not
- 8:28staying and think because I. I want to say it maybe it was
- 8:31this one that my mom said she wanted to go see and it was out
- 8:34of theaters, like within a week where she was at.
- 8:37That does happen. That happened with us, with Bo
- 8:39is afraid. Yeah, which, like, that's like,
- 8:42we're in a major city for Kentucky.
- 8:48So like, we get those weird releases for longer, usually.
- 8:51So that one was weird with Bo was afraid, Yeah.
- 8:54But yeah, where my mom's at, it's a little bit less weird for
- 8:57stuff to just disappear like that, especially.
- 9:00A movie like this? Yeah.
- 9:02Oh God, this one. Is so fucking weird.
- 9:05I pulled 3 movies from this year and because I know we previously
- 9:09covered something else from 20230 Scream 6 Screevy.
- 9:13Yes. Well, not only that, we did
- 9:15something else too, didn't we? No, I guess it was it.
- 9:19I know it was at least that. So I wanted to pull movies that
- 9:22we haven't spoken of, that we haven't seen yet.
- 9:25OK, because I'm pretty sure with Scream six I also put like.
- 9:29Evil Dead Rise in Infinity pool. I was trying to pull movies we
- 9:32had seen. So this is movies we haven't
- 9:34seen. OK, first one being the
- 9:37boogeyman. Oh yeah.
- 9:40That was released June 2nd, 2023 that had a budget of $35 million
- 9:45in a worldwide gross of $67,000,000 and has a 6.0 out of
- 9:5110 on IMDb. That's the Stephen King one,
- 9:53right? Yes, OK.
- 9:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:56Second, the Last Voyage of the Demeter, which you will find out
- 10:01in a moment, definitely flopped to the box office.
- 10:04But from everybody that we know that has seen it, they said it's
- 10:07really good and you should check it out as soon as you have a
- 10:09chance to watch it. That's what I've heard.
- 10:12And then I went online and I saw other people discussing it.
- 10:14A lot of people like it. And then there is a crowd of
- 10:16people that are like it was actually kind of, yeah, you
- 10:19know, like, I'm not personally drawn to those types of movies.
- 10:24It's vampire shit I don't typically like.
- 10:28I'm just not like a big person on like the monster type movies
- 10:30like that. Yeah, but that released August
- 10:3511th, 2023 budget of $45,000,000 in a worldwide gross of
- 10:3919,000,000. Oh man, that's a bad one.
- 10:42Shit. But it has a 6.2 out of 10 on
- 10:45IMDb. Yeah, I mean hearing good things
- 10:47about it. And the third movie is Insidious
- 10:51the Red Door. Listen, y'all this might be an
- 10:54unpopular opinion. I just don't give a shit about
- 10:56the Insidious movies. I don't either.
- 10:58I've tried. I've tried.
- 11:01I there are moments of them that are tense but like it's a lot to
- 11:06sit through a movie and just. I will always remember watching
- 11:11the first one though. I was alone in my dorm room and
- 11:15I had the whites out and that ending of the first Insidious is
- 11:19super effective and it's creepy and it leaves you feeling
- 11:23scared. Or it did me at least.
- 11:25And you know, like. Other than that, I just don't
- 11:28really care for it though. Like and I like Rose Byrne and
- 11:31Patrick Wilson. Like I feel like I should.
- 11:34I like spooky stuff. I like dream realms.
- 11:37Yeah, I like James Wan, but like.
- 11:39Insidious just didn't do it for me.
- 11:41This is a Jim Patrick Wilson's directorial debut.
- 11:45Yeah, and the premise of it seemed interesting enough.
- 11:48So I think I really feel like you don't have to watch the
- 11:50whole series to care about this newest one either.
- 11:53This could be completely inaccurate, but I feel like he
- 11:55told like a better version of the story with The Conjuring.
- 12:01So that released June 7th, July 7th, 2023.
- 12:05Budget of $16,000,000 and a worldwide gross of $188,000,000.
- 12:11Because we're in the minority of not caring about Insidious.
- 12:15I had no idea did that well. Yeah, wow.
- 12:18Yeah, that's one of those, like non horror people will be like,
- 12:21Oh yeah, Insidious movies, they're awesome people.
- 12:24People try and talk to me about him all the time and I'm like, I
- 12:26just, I don't care. Isn't weird that they call the
- 12:28demon like the lipstick demon? Lipstick face?
- 12:31Yeah, why just? This guy?
- 12:32Just call it Darth Maul. Darth Maul is what it is.
- 12:35Like Where do you get the lipstick from?
- 12:37It's just face paint. Like face paint demon.
- 12:39Like, do you realize how much lipstick you would waste like.
- 12:42Putting all of that over your face.
- 12:43Like over your whole face. Was that dubbed by fans or is
- 12:46that what I think? That's one of those, like kind
- 12:49of how the shark in Jaws isn't formally called Bruce.
- 12:52It's just what everybody started calling it.
- 12:54Yeah, that's what. That's what they named it on
- 12:56set. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 12:57Like that's not like the movie saying.
- 12:59That's what the name. I see what you're saying.
- 13:01OK. Yeah.
- 13:02Yeah yeah, it has a 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 13:06OK. So about the maybes I picked for
- 13:09this week? Don't have A tag line.
- 13:10This doesn't have A tag line either.
- 13:12No. What the fuck?
- 13:14Guys? Come on.
- 13:15Infinity. This one.
- 13:17Come on. OK, we got.
- 13:19We gotta do it. We gotta.
- 13:20Come up with one hang. Enough with the resort, but I
- 13:23knew that this would break you having two in a row.
- 13:26This is a major release. Come on.
- 13:31Well, whatever. OK, I guess, Like, honestly, the
- 13:34poster for this is a it's striking enough.
- 13:37Like you see Skarsgard in the pool of what?
- 13:40Maybe blood, I guess. I don't know.
- 13:43Like what? Like you don't know until you
- 13:46watch the movie. Yeah.
- 13:47Like it It it grabs you. I'll give them that.
- 13:50I I'm also very sparse on the fun facts.
- 13:52I have a couple of pieces of information though.
- 13:55Well, Cronenberg is being very discreet with all of the stuff.
- 14:00So principal photography took place across five weeks starting
- 14:05September 6th, 2021. They shot 12 days in.
- 14:09I'm sorry if I mispronounced this, Sinbenak, Croatia.
- 14:13And then the rest was shot in Budapest, Hungary.
- 14:18And yeah, so he wrote this screenplay with the intention of
- 14:22directing it, which I thought was common but maybe isn't.
- 14:26If you're a writer, director, but I don't, I don't know.
- 14:30He's also very new. This is his second feature film.
- 14:32So that's true. Yeah, I wanna.
- 14:34I still haven't seen Possessor. I really, really wanna watch
- 14:37that. But he wrote this.
- 14:40It was a combination of a scifi story he was working on about
- 14:43killing clones, and then also some, like, unpleasant
- 14:47experiences that he had on vacations.
- 14:51Really. Yeah, huh.
- 14:53Do you think, Do you think he feels like he has to, like,
- 14:56follow his dad's lead and make weird horror movies?
- 15:02I don't know if he feels like, I mean, maybe there's some
- 15:04pressure there, like just from, you know, the name Cronenberg
- 15:09automatically you think body horror.
- 15:12Mmhmm. And that also is probably like,
- 15:14he grew up around that kind of stuff and he's just like, yeah,
- 15:17weird shit, let's do it. That's true.
- 15:19Yeah, because both of his movies involve body horror for sure.
- 15:23I mean, yeah, I haven't seen possessor, but I know enough
- 15:25about it till like, no. Yeah, so that's that's all I
- 15:29have for fun facts. I didn't even like get fun
- 15:32information about like casting. Usually there's something, but
- 15:35it's just like Ohh scars. Carp was announced and Goth was
- 15:38announced. Well, this is a fun fact that
- 15:42isn't relevant to any of this. It's just I like to mention it
- 15:45because I think it's funny. John Carpenter, I guess.
- 15:49I had a falling out with his dad and he talks about how far up
- 15:54his own ass he is all the time because he takes himself way too
- 15:58seriously. He he buys his own hype.
- 16:01He smells his own farts. If you will, if you yes, and I
- 16:05think I don't know, there's some information about Cronenberg, a
- 16:08different Cronenberg. But you know, I mean, I I just
- 16:11like talking about when I break in.
- 16:12Wait, but you said John Carpenter had a falling out.
- 16:17Oh, with. The elder Cronenberg?
- 16:20Yes. OK, OK.
- 16:22He had some fallout with his dad, and I thought you meant
- 16:24John Carpenter's dad. No, no, no, no.
- 16:27I. Was like, yeah, no.
- 16:28Like, yeah, sometimes dads do think too highly of themselves
- 16:31and you have to cut them off. Like, I was like, but how does
- 16:33that tie into this David Cronenberg?
- 16:36Yeah, yeah, no, he like, they were tight for a little bit.
- 16:39They had. There was like a whole thing
- 16:40that they were doing where all of these historical horror
- 16:44directors would get together and hang out.
- 16:47That's. Fun.
- 16:48Yeah. Well then it stopped being fun.
- 16:49Apparently whenever, you know the alter, Cronenberg got up his
- 16:53own butt hole and John Carpenter is very much a curmudgeon, as we
- 16:57talked about the other day. Oh my God.
- 16:58But in the best possible way. Yeah, like he's the type of
- 17:01curmudgeon that you want to get like whiskey meat with him and
- 17:05just kind of like bitch about kids these days.
- 17:07Honestly, this is on like another podcast that I saw that,
- 17:10like he was on a podcast and they were talking about
- 17:12Cronenberg. He's like, ah yeah, fuck that
- 17:13guy is. It's great.
- 17:15It's super entertaining. Look it up if you can.
- 17:16It's on YouTube, okay. Well, there we go.
- 17:19All right, so we're ready to talk about good, bad, ugly, and
- 17:23absurd. All right.
- 17:24I'm sure we have a lot of that. Yes, yes, yes.
- 17:28OK. Charles looks good with you,
- 17:30Okay. The first thing I had written
- 17:31down. I think Alexander Skarsgard does
- 17:35a great job of selling confused desperation.
- 17:38He looks like a shivering Chihuahua for the first half of
- 17:41the movie and also portions of the last half too.
- 17:46It's he. He's great in this movie, I
- 17:48think. He really is.
- 17:49He sells all of the things that his character goes through
- 17:52because his character goes through a lot.
- 17:54The Skarsgard family is really good at making their faces look
- 17:58different, like throughout a single movie or like.
- 18:01How is that one man dude like whenever he is filling himself
- 18:06and is? Spitting the cherries.
- 18:10Spitting the cherries. Yeah, I remember.
- 18:12It's the day after they've killed the Yeah, there was our
- 18:15owner. That's when he's filling himself
- 18:16with those, OK, yeah, no. I'm thinking like whenever he is
- 18:21like beating the shit out of himself and he slicks his hair
- 18:24back and then he starts doing like a.
- 18:26Little piece of shit, yeah, he's doing almost like Matthew
- 18:28McConaughey on Wolf of Wall Street, except it's like.
- 18:31Weirder cuz he's like, yeah, yeah, everybody's like, whoa, I
- 18:37like that. But he's really feeling himself.
- 18:39And then whenever he did that, yeah, he looks different, but I
- 18:42don't know, he goes through a lot and he has to play different
- 18:45versions of himself constantly because there are double s and
- 18:49he does a great job with it. Yeah, I think that the the ECHI
- 18:54I think is what it was. The ECHI masks that they have
- 18:57are super uncomfortable. They whenever they those are
- 19:02brought on to the scene, it just kind of adds like another layer
- 19:05of horror. Whoever designed this such great
- 19:07job. If you haven't watched this
- 19:09tryptophobia trigger warning, it was a fucking jump scare for me.
- 19:12The one mask every time it jumped up just holes everywhere.
- 19:16It's pretty bad. It's like how the movie like.
- 19:19That's the second cut in the movie.
- 19:21Yeah. And I just love the concept of
- 19:26this movie. I like the idea of being able to
- 19:30double yourself and have that, pay the consequences.
- 19:34And I like the. I just like how, like there's so
- 19:38much potential with that concept.
- 19:40And this movie goes in a way that I wasn't really
- 19:45anticipating, and I like the way it went.
- 19:48But even if I didn't like this movie, I still think that I
- 19:51would like have a good enough time just because of what all is
- 19:55going on. I'm going to piggyback off of
- 19:58that for my good because obviously I agree the
- 20:01performance in this are all stellar.
- 20:03There's not a weak performance in it.
- 20:06I like that it didn't take the expected turn.
- 20:10And I feel like they kind of even wink, wink, nudge, nudge at
- 20:12the audience about that, where they have the one character say,
- 20:14hey, do you worry that they got the wrong person?
- 20:18Because that's a terrifying concept.
- 20:20But I love that we didn't go in that direction.
- 20:22Instead, we have a bunch of rich assholes like, willing to pay
- 20:27the fine, You know what I mean? And that's a concept that we
- 20:30talked about in grad school, where, like, if you're going to
- 20:32have, like, a reward system or a consequence system, then it
- 20:36needs to be effective because it it needs to be something like if
- 20:42it's a reward, it needs to tie to the behavior you're
- 20:44rewarding. And if it's a consequence, it
- 20:46needs to be steep enough to actually have an impact.
- 20:49And I've read stories online of people being like, Oh yeah, no,
- 20:51my rich friends just consider parking tickets, like the cost
- 20:56of parking somewhere. Like, they don't care.
- 20:58It's not going to make them stop parking in a handicap spot or
- 21:00whatever because they're willing to pay the fine.
- 21:02It's not a big enough hit to them.
- 21:05And I like that. That's the route that we take
- 21:07with this movie. And there's a lot more that I'll
- 21:09probably talk about as we go through in terms of like how we
- 21:12treat criminals and different cultures and stuff like that.
- 21:17There's a lot of really rich commentary in this very fucked
- 21:20up movie. Yeah.
- 21:21And I think it's it's really just interesting to dissect.
- 21:25Yeah, what's your bad? OK, so I agree with you.
- 21:30I do like that they cut that and they went with like a whole
- 21:34other direction with it. I like that they got up front
- 21:37with it, but. I do feel like there were missed
- 21:41opportunities with the concept. See, there was parts of me that
- 21:45was thinking, OK, we could really explore how fucked up it
- 21:49is to witness seeing you being killed over and over again and
- 21:57like see how that impacts the character.
- 22:00I mean, I guess we kind of do see that in a way, but like
- 22:03really, we don't really dive into it.
- 22:05We just kind of see the things happen.
- 22:08And we don't really dive into the effects of it.
- 22:11What I would have liked to have happened was with each doubling
- 22:15event, it breaks a little bit of you, the original, down more and
- 22:21more each time. So as you continue, you can
- 22:25continue to do that, but the more you do it, the less you you
- 22:29become. So I understand you're not fully
- 22:33familiar with all of the Harry Potter lore, but you're
- 22:35essentially describing Voldemort.
- 22:37Is that what really happened? Continue Ohh.
- 22:39OK. I just, I just again, no finish
- 22:44your thoughts and then I'll share my thoughts.
- 22:45Well, OK, so like because there were parts where something like
- 22:48this would happen. So whenever he starts doing the
- 22:51the ECU route and he starts to trip and he starts to see things
- 22:55and you see like parts of the mask.
- 22:57I was starting to like think it would be cool if that's what
- 23:02they actually looked like after the fact, but they just aren't
- 23:05capable of seeing it. But like, whenever he does the
- 23:08hosynogenic stuff, he can actually get like a glimpse of
- 23:11what people are actually looking like.
- 23:13Like, physically they're breaking down.
- 23:14But also like, there's just like parts of themselves that could
- 23:17be deteriorating too. OK, I like that thought.
- 23:21That's what I like. I would have liked exploring
- 23:23stuff like that, but instead what we end up getting is like,
- 23:28OK, so then he kills, he does something bad and they kill
- 23:33another version of him. And then rinse and repeat like
- 23:37multiple times throughout the movie.
- 23:38And then like, that's it. And I get what you're saying and
- 23:42I get that that's a legitimate criticism that a lot of people
- 23:45have about this movie. But for me, I like that we got a
- 23:49different take on it. I love that we got the story
- 23:53that we got because I like just rich assholes enjoying being
- 23:56rich assholes. I think that's and like
- 24:00ultimately none of it fucking matters to them.
- 24:04And that being what breaks in at the end.
- 24:06I love that and I think that's great.
- 24:09Again, I fully understand the people that wanted it to be more
- 24:13about, like the ethics of cloning a ship of Theseus as a
- 24:16human being, if you will. Like I get it, But I just feel
- 24:21like we've seen it before, and I'm so glad that we got this
- 24:23story instead. I mean, I I like what we got
- 24:27too. I just, I don't know.
- 24:28I I would have liked to at least explore certain things.
- 24:32Like you don't have to fully go like fully into like, I don't
- 24:35know, I just don't feel like we ever linger on any of the
- 24:38consequences of it. And I think there are hints of
- 24:41that, like the cloning process doing something to people
- 24:44because, like, M is horrified watching the clone of James get
- 24:51murdered. Yeah.
- 24:52Like she's horrified at it. And she doesn't understand why
- 24:54he's not more horrified. And, you know, they talk about
- 24:57like the cloning process making you different.
- 25:00So I mean, there's hints of that there.
- 25:01It's just not the main point of the story.
- 25:03Yeah, I guess there are hints of it.
- 25:06OK, well that was my bad. So what's yours?
- 25:09My bad is probably. I guess my bad would just be, I
- 25:18don't know, I I want, I want a little bit more of the group
- 25:25dynamics. I guess the the double club, if
- 25:28you will. That's what I called him in my
- 25:31notes. I had to think about for a
- 25:33second. Was like, oh, OK, yeah, yeah.
- 25:34Because, like, I like, I was really excited when I saw Amanda
- 25:37Brigale because she's, she plays Rita in Handmaid's Tale.
- 25:41Which one was she? She is the the not blonde one in
- 25:46this city. Yeah.
- 25:47So you've got Mia, Goff and Becks and Jennifer.
- 25:50She's Jennifer and the non blonde one.
- 25:53OK, And she's a really good actress and it's fun seeing her
- 25:56in this role instead of, you know, servant role in an
- 26:00impressive society. So.
- 26:02Yeah. Here she's the Privileged, yeah.
- 26:05Yeah, It's, it's nice seeing that side of her.
- 26:07I just wish we'd gotten a little bit more of the rest of them
- 26:11because, you know, like the dynamic, like the toxic group
- 26:15dynamic of them as a whole, I think would have, like, better
- 26:19benefited instead of it just being like Mia Goth is the head
- 26:22bitch in charge and everybody else is going along with her.
- 26:25Yeah, really, that's what it is. And they're like, clearly
- 26:27they've all been friends for years.
- 26:30So like it just, I don't know. It would have been nice to see
- 26:32that a little bit more, Yeah. Not necessarily a ton more,
- 26:36because that's not the main point of the story, but just a
- 26:38little bit. Just a little bit to the point
- 26:40where like, I would want to include the other characters in
- 26:43my list of stars. Yeah, but yeah, you can't really
- 26:47'cause yeah, they aren't really explored.
- 26:49Yeah, they get a few lines each, but.
- 26:52That's, yeah, the focus is on those other people, mostly even
- 26:55like Alden or Alden. He's like Mia Goth's husband.
- 26:59But like, you don't really get a super big portion of him.
- 27:03Like, he's just kind of there, you know?
- 27:06You're the Walmart celebrities. Yeah, his Christoff Tango
- 27:13instead of Christoff Waltz. Ah yeah, a little bit.
- 27:19I can see that one, all I see it in his face and then obviously
- 27:22they have like similar accents. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:26Not 100%. I'm not saying all Europeans
- 27:28sound the same. Obviously that's not true.
- 27:30But like, they're facial features.
- 27:32He's just a lot taller than Christoph Waltz.
- 27:33Was that mean a goth's actual accident?
- 27:35Isn't she actually Scottish? No, she's she's Scottish.
- 27:40No, she's not. She's Argentinian and British.
- 27:42Oh, OK, yeah. Like she's.
- 27:44And her mother is actually like, no, she's got, she's got a lot
- 27:48of ethnicities mixed in there, and she grew up several
- 27:52different places, but the main ones that I'm remembering off
- 27:54the top of my head are Argentinian and British.
- 27:57So yeah, her voice actually is like that, OK, She just she's
- 28:01pretty good at putting on accents for Ty W at the very
- 28:04least. She does a good Southern accent.
- 28:06Yeah, I'll. Tell you that much?
- 28:08OK, ugly. I mean, the whole act of having
- 28:12to be forced to watch a version of yourself be killed is
- 28:18terrifying. That concept is crazy to me,
- 28:22especially when the double. Fully believes that they're the
- 28:26person. They don't have any idea that
- 28:29there's like another one of them.
- 28:31What if you catch a glimpse of yourself out in the audience?
- 28:33Like, we didn't get to see that, but like, what if they made eye
- 28:36contact because they're clearly there, Yeah.
- 28:39Like, it's very upsetting, that whole idea.
- 28:42Like just like I'm putting myself in that perspective and
- 28:46it's just a terrible thing to like, have to experience seeing
- 28:49yourself die and also just the whole.
- 28:53Fact that they are fucking around with a lot of people's
- 28:57lives and just not having any care about it, Yes.
- 29:03Like, they're this country is their playground.
- 29:07Exactly. It's like, they're they're rich
- 29:09tourists and the local customs don't matter to them.
- 29:13And they're constantly like saying, oh, it's barbaric.
- 29:15And I feel like there's a lot I could say like, honestly, is our
- 29:20justice system 100% sound? Do we treat prisoners well?
- 29:24Do we treat people that have served their time and have left
- 29:28jail? Well, we don't.
- 29:29Can you buy yourself out of prison if you're wishing to?
- 29:32Yes, like, like I, you know, and they're not all Americans.
- 29:37Several of them are Americans or living in America.
- 29:42So I'm not like trying to generalize this.
- 29:44I'm just speaking from, like, our perspective.
- 29:45Our perspective, Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:47But like, they're acting like there's so much superior when
- 29:51it's not necessarily like the truth.
- 29:56They just have money. Yeah, like they have money.
- 29:58And they have, like, their perspective of what they think
- 30:00is normal and right. And they think, oh, they have
- 30:03this way of doing it. And obviously they're
- 30:05Barbarians, which does a gross term to use when you're in
- 30:09another country with, you know, people of a different, like,
- 30:14ethnicity and race of you. But it's appropriate to use with
- 30:18the Skarsgard? Absolutely yes.
- 30:21Both of them are Barbarians. But yeah, yeah, I absolutely
- 30:26agree with what you're saying. Is that you're ugly too?
- 30:29So those are uglies. And since you've touched upon
- 30:32them, I'm gonna touch upon a different ugly, which is that
- 30:35Alexander Skarsgard's character is such a fucking pretentious
- 30:38little sad boy, and I hate him. Yeah, everything about his
- 30:41character. It's like toxic masculinity,
- 30:44like, you know, you you see the tigers like, oh man, it should
- 30:47be subservient, blah blah blah. Men don't cry, can't wear pink.
- 30:51Or wait, is he buying into the? I guess he's like, they get him
- 30:54there. He is the other side of that at
- 30:56the beginning of this, like, he is like, he's like, I should be
- 31:01great. I should be fantastic.
- 31:03I'm an artist. Nobody understands me.
- 31:06My wife hates me. I wanna be a strongman.
- 31:09Like he's just he is insufferable.
- 31:13He has all of these ideas of what he should be and what he
- 31:16wants to be, but he's got no like acceptance of different
- 31:21types of ways of being, and he's also got no motivation to go and
- 31:25just fucking do something for himself.
- 31:27Well, look, OK, I I see what you're saying, but I also see
- 31:31kind of his perspective. He's in a bit of a shitty
- 31:34situation and you can you have the right to socle a little bit
- 31:37with that he his wife. It doesn't sound like she didn't
- 31:42hates him, she. Is married.
- 31:44She hates her too. I don't know.
- 31:46Maybe. I don't know what We don't
- 31:47really dive into that. But like, it was a hate
- 31:50marriage. Like, she admits fully that she
- 31:55married him because, like, in spite of her dad.
- 31:58Yeah. And he wrote a book and it
- 32:01didn't go so well. And that, like, affected him.
- 32:04Like, I don't know. Like I don't realize.
- 32:06It's a shitty situation. I don't necessarily fault him
- 32:08for like being in his feelings for like that type of situation
- 32:12and he's going to the resort to try and get inspiration and
- 32:14she's pressuring him like, but he hasn't done anything in six
- 32:19years. Yeah, I know.
- 32:21But like he's living off of his wife's money, then acting so put
- 32:24upon by the fact that he relies on his wife's money.
- 32:27I don't know. I think there are I.
- 32:28Don't think there's anything bad about it.
- 32:29I think there is a version of this where he writes like he's
- 32:33struggling as an author and his wife's reports him, and it's not
- 32:36toxic. But their mindsets, both of
- 32:39them. I'm not saying that like she's
- 32:41in the right here, but both of them have such a toxic mindset
- 32:46and a toxic approach to it, and he clearly just wants to be
- 32:50idolized and he doesn't want to have to do the work to earn
- 32:54that. I think he just got like he
- 32:57heard. He finally heard something good.
- 33:00About his work. And he wanted to like, you know,
- 33:04surround himself with that because it sounds like he has a
- 33:06lot of negatives in his life. I don't necessarily fault him
- 33:09for wanting to hear the good things like somebody
- 33:13appreciating what he does like. It sounds like people shout all
- 33:16over what he did and that really does hurt you when you put
- 33:19yourself out there like that creatively when people just
- 33:22absolutely dump on you. And then your wife's also kind
- 33:24of like you know just she's there like as like support
- 33:28financially. But.
- 33:29I. Given their dynamic of what
- 33:31we've seen, I doubt she's been much like support and, like,
- 33:34emotionally. And I don't disagree with that.
- 33:37But also like, he's he's not sympathetic enough to me because
- 33:41it doesn't seem like he actually wants to do, Like, he's not
- 33:46trying to write his. It's been six years and he
- 33:48doesn't even have an idea for another novel.
- 33:50And his suggestion was to go on vacation to a resort where you
- 33:53can't even leave the resort strip.
- 33:55Yeah. And then he complaints about the
- 33:56artificiality of it all and like it.
- 34:00To me, it just seems very much like he is too comfortable being
- 34:05mediocre. And he I.
- 34:08Don't think he's comfortable being mediocre.
- 34:10No, he is. He's found a place that he's
- 34:11comfortable with it and he like, he wants to be like, Oh well, I
- 34:15want to be a writer. I need to go find inspiration.
- 34:17Will you pay for a vacation for me?
- 34:18Like he acts like that's not what he's going for, but really
- 34:22like he is complaining about things, but he's not doing
- 34:26anything to fix it. He wants to stay in the same
- 34:29place that he's in because he's getting everything he wants
- 34:32besides, like the things that you have to actually work for,
- 34:35and he's not working for any of it.
- 34:37I don't see it that way. Well, he's a fucking sad boy and
- 34:41sad boys exist in the world and I can't handle him.
- 34:45He's a very ugly care. I do not feel sympathetic for
- 34:47him. I agree that he gets into like a
- 34:49bad place and he lets people like manipulate him, but like, I
- 34:52don't, I don't think. I'm not discounting his like,
- 34:55I'm not saying that the way he's treated is correct and that I
- 34:57don't feel bad that he's being attacked by this group of high
- 35:01school level bullies, but at the same time, like him, as a
- 35:06person, I wouldn't want to spend anytime with him.
- 35:08I don't. I don't think it's fair to like
- 35:10make that judgment considering we don't really get to see
- 35:13enough of it. We see him.
- 35:16We see it from him getting the compliment and her asking about
- 35:21him like actually doing something and then that's it.
- 35:27We don't get enough context. We get the context that he's in
- 35:30a loveless marriage and that he doesn't have a job and he hasn't
- 35:34written a book in six years. That's all we know.
- 35:38Yeah. So what's he been doing in those
- 35:39six years? I don't know exactly.
- 35:41Like I'm going off of the context that we have.
- 35:45And I feel like it's very intentional because a lot of
- 35:47this movie is about him being a failure and him being sad and
- 35:52him not wanting to admit that any of this, that he might have
- 35:56any role in any of it, him not wanting to admit his
- 36:00shortcomings, that's a big part of why they target him.
- 36:06OK, I they see him as weak because what I thought like
- 36:10because he is, he's a weak little sad boy.
- 36:13OK, for the sake of the episode, I think we're just gonna have to
- 36:16agree to disagree on this one. Oh, yeah, No, I absolutely
- 36:18agree. I'm just, I I mean, agree to
- 36:20disagree. Yeah.
- 36:21I just, you know that's I I cannot stand him as a character.
- 36:25OK, that's fair. That's totally fair.
- 36:28OK, so absurd. Then I think it's hilarious that
- 36:32every time he does the the death, he is given ashes of his
- 36:38former self. The first time that he's given
- 36:40an at, like the the fact that they give him ashes after the
- 36:43first one, like I don't know, I find that kind of funny.
- 36:46And then like by the end of it he just like he's packing 3 urns
- 36:50with him to the airport, wrapping him up in his jeans.
- 36:52Yeah, like you keep him safe. Like, it's like, sentimental to
- 36:55him. And I was like, that was me.
- 36:58The whole scene of him hyping himself up to beat the shit off
- 37:02himself and then pee on himself is pretty fucking absurd, yeah.
- 37:07And then? Here I just have the dog.
- 37:11Oh my God. The dog is so fucking absurd.
- 37:13It's how long did they have that double of him?
- 37:17Because it clearly had to break him down to a certain point to
- 37:20get him behaving like that. That's I have seen theories and
- 37:25it makes sense that that is the one that he beats up because we
- 37:29never see him kill that one and it has scars on its face.
- 37:33Exactly, yeah, because he fucked it up.
- 37:35And they all did, actually. They all kind of probably
- 37:37tortured it. And that's how they broke it
- 37:38down to being like that, OK? All right, those are my absurds,
- 37:43OK? My absurd.
- 37:45They keep talking about how it's a substantial cost.
- 37:48I want to know how rich some of these people will really are.
- 37:51Cuz it's not that like architects don't make good
- 37:54money, but like is he really making that good money that they
- 37:57can phone themselves this many times?
- 38:00He's retired to Yeah, they. Also mentioned that it's a poor
- 38:03country, so like a little money here goes a long way there.
- 38:07I guess that's true. It just, I don't know, it's a
- 38:12little, I want it, I want more context.
- 38:14Yeah, to that, you know, I mean the whole fucking, the whole
- 38:20thing is just absurd. It's absurd.
- 38:22All of it. The whole cloning thing is crazy
- 38:24too, like the fact that, like whenever he puts like the
- 38:26mouthpiece in his mouth, I want. I want more context for the
- 38:29cloning process. Like, why?
- 38:31Why is it like that? Because it almost looks like
- 38:32he's getting into like a tub of silicone, and they're making
- 38:37the, the, the impression of them so they can they're they make a
- 38:41mole. You know what I mean?
- 38:42Yeah, like a. Yeah, Yeah.
- 38:43Well, I think. I think that is what they're
- 38:45doing, isn't it? But it's just, I don't know.
- 38:47The whole thing is just so they clearly get into his brain too,
- 38:50to get his memories and stuff. Yeah, he's like tripping hard
- 38:53whenever he's going through the process.
- 38:56Yeah. But yeah, I think like the whole
- 38:58concept, obviously, like the whole movie gets a little bit
- 39:00absurd, but it's really good. Maybe.
- 39:04Honestly, like, I mean, I think that this is a fair one to say
- 39:07the movie Infinity Pool is the absurd for this, yes.
- 39:10Because it's just an absurd movie all the way through.
- 39:14All right. So what are you rating it?
- 39:17This is a tough one for me to rate cuz I remember coming out
- 39:21of the theater I was very conflicted.
- 39:24But yeah, I think on 2nd watch I enjoyed it more this time
- 39:28around. I was gonna say you seem a lot
- 39:29more favorable than you did when we were talking about it on the
- 39:31way home. Yeah, well, because I like, I
- 39:34said, like I was hoping that we would explore different things,
- 39:37but we didn't this time. I was just along for the ride.
- 39:40Yeah. Also, this is one of those
- 39:42movies that was hyped up as like, Oh my God, you're not
- 39:44gonna believe what's gonna happen.
- 39:46It's just so out there. It's so absurd.
- 39:48And then you watch and like, Oh well, it's a little bit more
- 39:50tame than everybody build it up to be, but.
- 39:52They going in with like better expectations.
- 39:55I think it's firmly like had a like 7.57 point five.
- 40:00Yeah. All right.
- 40:00I might give it an 8. OK.
- 40:03So we're starting off with a 7.75, all right.
- 40:06That's pretty strong. Yeah, pretty fair.
- 40:08So we start off with the darkness that both times
- 40:10watching this made me wonder if I just like, can't see very
- 40:14well. Yeah, but it's actually a dark
- 40:16hotel room. And Emma's like, why did you say
- 40:20that? And he's like, say what?
- 40:21And she's like, I can't feed myself with wet sand brain
- 40:25death. Just like, this was your idea.
- 40:27Why are you complaining about being here?
- 40:29He's like, I said, we should go get breakfast.
- 40:32And she pulls open the curtains and she's annoyed.
- 40:35He I guess he was like a dreaming or something, just like
- 40:38speaking from his dreams. What a obnoxious thing.
- 40:42What an obnoxious way to talk in your sleep.
- 40:44You're supposed to Babble when you're talking in your sleep.
- 40:47Like that time that you kept asking for the square thing, and
- 40:51I was like, do you mean a towel? You said I need that square
- 40:55thing. And I was like, what square
- 40:56thing? And you're like that square
- 40:58thing that dries you off. And I was like a towel.
- 41:00And you're like, no, I know what a towel is, Jesse.
- 41:03You wanted an extra blanket. That's what you wanted,
- 41:06obviously. But you weren't talking about
- 41:08white sand brain Dif. I personally prefer the time
- 41:12that I saved you from the sumo's.
- 41:14Yeah, that was great that, you know, that was a good dream.
- 41:19I was a hero. Like my little sister one time
- 41:22dreamt that a dragon ate her wedding cake.
- 41:24Like she just sat up because we shared a room.
- 41:27She goes dragon ate my wedding cake and she laid back down.
- 41:30That was it. That's it.
- 41:31That's for all dream. OK, so yeah, then we get very
- 41:36upsetting masks. Very upsetting masks.
- 41:40This is the start of the umbramock.
- 41:43Which is the summoning. It's a LA token tradition before
- 41:47the rainy season starts and you can buy the Eki Mass for sale at
- 41:51the gift shop. James is very disenchanted with
- 41:54this place, like his wife is like, hey, let's go on a boat
- 41:57tour and then go to this Chinese place in town and he goes,
- 42:00that's not a real town. I can't stand another dinner
- 42:03here. He's like, I can't believe they
- 42:05have like a fucking Chinese restaurant.
- 42:07He's. Like, sure, sure, Chinese.
- 42:09Yeah. So she goes.
- 42:10And then he stays on the beach. Yeah, and then while he.
- 42:13He's there. This four Wheeler kind of goes
- 42:15on a rampage and is running over people's things, trying to run
- 42:18over people. And Mia got this like it's a
- 42:21demonstration. They hate tourists here.
- 42:23Hey, do you want to go to this Chinese restaurant that you
- 42:26hate? He's like.
- 42:27Sure, he said. Sure, because she's like, you're
- 42:29James Foster. I'm obsessed with your book.
- 42:31Yes. Yes.
- 42:32So he's like, yeah, obviously we'll go to this restaurant that
- 42:35I said I hated and M is not in any way shape or form like.
- 42:41Disillusioned, but like, she's like, I see exactly what
- 42:44happened. You were flattered.
- 42:45So you agreed to do something that you wouldn't have done for
- 42:48me. That he shot on.
- 42:49Yeah, beforehand. Yeah.
- 42:51So yeah, it cuts them at the Chinese restaurant having dinner
- 42:54together. The name of his book is called
- 42:57the variable sheath. It's about a urologist, I think.
- 43:03I don't even did they talk about?
- 43:05Later. Yeah, when she's reading the
- 43:06review. Ohh, really?
- 43:08Yeah. I don't know.
- 43:09I don't know. I would.
- 43:10I'd like to know exactly what the synopsis is.
- 43:13For the product. But so they're like they're
- 43:15introducing themselves. Alban is her husband.
- 43:19Yeah, I had written down a journalist question mark.
- 43:22Yeah, No. So now that he's retired from,
- 43:24like, architecture, he publishes a journal called Glass Pane.
- 43:28That's it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:29And Gabby is a commercial actress.
- 43:31She specializes in feeling naturally same.
- 43:34Gabby same. I like this too because like
- 43:38naturally people are like what? And she's like Ohh.
- 43:40Let me demonstrate. Yeah, you're talking about like
- 43:42the the like infomercials where it's like you need.
- 43:47The the milk opener. And you're like, what the fuck
- 43:50are you talking about? Just open the milk and it's
- 43:52like, no, this is so much easier, yeah, or people just
- 43:56can't do it. Or like the Snuggie commercials
- 43:58where people are like how do I cover myself with this blanket,
- 44:02get tangled up in a. Yeah, it was like.
- 44:05So that's what she does, and she like, demonstrates it.
- 44:08And it is kind of believable because you're watching her try
- 44:10cut this bread and you're like, shit.
- 44:11How tough is that bread? It's effective, I want to say.
- 44:14That I'm like, yeah, I do need a bun chopper.
- 44:16You're correct. Abby, I want the bunch Hopper.
- 44:19I would applaud at the restaurant there.
- 44:21I would clap at that. Oh, James's description of
- 44:27himself because they're all sharing their, like, backgrounds
- 44:29and stuff. He's a writer.
- 44:31His first book was published 6 years ago.
- 44:34He hasn't published the second one yet.
- 44:36And they're like, oh, what do you do for money?
- 44:39And his wife goes, oh, he married ranch.
- 44:43Yeah. She loves to just, like, bring
- 44:45it up. Oh yeah, Marry.
- 44:47Well, she seems resentful that it seems like he is kind of
- 44:52using her for money, and he seems uncomfortable that maybe
- 44:56at one point they were actually in love and clearly they hate
- 44:59each other now. Like, I think it was just like a
- 45:02passion thing at first. Yeah, like, really?
- 45:05I mean, as she admits later, she married him because she wanted
- 45:08to piss off her dad. Yep.
- 45:16Yeah, like her dad was right. Maybe that's why she's upset
- 45:12with him for not writing more, because she's like, well, you're
- 45:14not even a writer anymore, So what good are?
- 45:17He is just like using her. Yeah, and she's using him.
- 45:20They're using each other. They're both shitty people.
- 45:23The next day, M and James are like walking.
- 45:26She's like, we shouldn't be doing this.
- 45:28We're not supposed to leave the resort.
- 45:29They said that very clearly. And he goes, well, Alvin and
- 45:32Gabby come here every year and they say they've done this, so
- 45:35I'm just gonna trust them. We're just gonna go for it.
- 45:38And so they're borrowing a car from somebody named Mr. Thresh
- 45:41who works at the resort, and they go driving, and they go
- 45:45driving for a while. Wait, do we ever see what Mr.
- 45:48Thresh looks like? Like just the back of his head.
- 45:51Okay, because I have a theory that he could be a double.
- 45:55He's related to the detective. I don't think that's why they
- 45:58would say he's related. No.
- 46:00Like, it's his. His name is Dro Thresh.
- 46:02I know. He has, like, an actual credit
- 46:04and everything. Oh, OK Yeah.
- 46:05Like he's a different actor. OK, OK.
- 46:07Yeah, alright. Wouldn't that be interesting?
- 46:08And just like a double for like. OK, well we need help over here
- 46:11at the resort. OK, I'll, I'll call myself.
- 46:13Whatever. So yeah, they end up pulling up
- 46:18at this beach. It's kind of deserted, but it
- 46:20also has like things like busted up cars, which should be a sign.
- 46:25Yeah, clearly they've taken people here before.
- 46:27Yeah, and Em's like this doesn't feel right, but you know it's OK
- 46:32cuz then they're eating all the sausages.
- 46:34And why is this dude cooking sausages whenever everybody's
- 46:39so? Full and he just keeps cooking.
- 46:40He's like, I turn it out so good and then he's like, maybe we'll
- 46:43cook you, we'll eat you, get em, can eat your balls.
- 46:47Finally, if she hasn't already, yeah.
- 46:50And then he says, why did you? Mary James and this is where
- 46:54she's like, ought to piss off my dad, cuz he said never marry an
- 46:56author. So I married the first bad
- 47:00writer that spilled coffee on me.
- 47:03I don't think she said bad, but I think it's implied.
- 47:05Broke. Yeah, Is what she says.
- 47:07Yeah, not even better. Like just straight up, like
- 47:11telling like how it is. Like, yeah, I just married the
- 47:14first fucking artist so that I could find or author.
- 47:17Well, and the timeline on this because later James says that
- 47:20they've been together for 10 years.
- 47:21So if his first book was published 6 years ago, like did
- 47:25it take him? Four years to write that.
- 47:28And I was taking him six years to He doesn't even have an idea
- 47:30for his second book. Yeah, which?
- 47:32Not every author is Stephen King or RL Stein, or even our friend
- 47:37Robert Atone that, like, just turn publish multiple books a
- 47:41year. Yeah, this guy likens himself
- 47:43more to a Who is the dude that did Game of Thrones?
- 47:47Oh, George R Martin. Yeah, the guy that's, like been
- 47:49writing the same book. Five years to write a chapter
- 47:53and everybody's worried he's gonna die before you can finish
- 47:55the series. This is him.
- 47:57Yeah, so basically they're they're all kind of like that
- 48:02uncomfortable couple day where you don't really know people and
- 48:05you're like, oh, OK, so you guys are dysfunctional and now we're
- 48:07trapped with you on a beach. Yeah, except this doesn't seem
- 48:10to bother them. Yeah, they they revel in the
- 48:13discomfort. James goes off to pee and.
- 48:16There's a surprise handy from Gabby.
- 48:19No word spoken. No word spoken.
- 48:22He looks incredibly ashamed. He it sounded like a painful
- 48:27cum. Yeah, like it was like and then
- 48:32you actually see the splooge. Yeah, it just like hits rocks.
- 48:37In the most upsetting way, it's just like.
- 48:42Even his cum look sad hit it. It didn't.
- 48:46There was not much like it didn't shoot it just like it
- 48:49just dribbled out. It's like like dude, it's not
- 48:53supposed to. Yeah, it's your pee went further
- 48:55than that. Like, and here's the thing.
- 48:58So on 2nd Watch, we know exactly what they're doing.
- 49:00They've sought him out because they think he's gonna be easy to
- 49:03break. Yeah, and like earlier, Gabby
- 49:06makes her remark when she talks about like, failing.
- 49:08Naturally, she said. Each failure.
- 49:11Has a physical, is like a physical and mental puzzle.
- 49:15So she's very, you know, like planting these seeds of like,
- 49:19oh, failing at something can break a person down.
- 49:21And now she's like exerting this control over him.
- 49:24She's very much mind fucking him in the same way Sean Combs mind
- 49:29fucks Jonah Hill and get him to the rig.
- 49:34I mean, she mind fucks him by just straight up fucking them
- 49:37throughout the entire movie. It's like, yeah, how's that
- 49:38fucking doing? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:40Well, you jerked me off and like, you had sex with me many
- 49:43times, so it went pretty OK. Yeah.
- 49:45So I was OK with it. God, man.
- 49:48So Alvin is too drunk to drive, so James offers you, To which I
- 49:54reply, I feel like he's probably just as drunk as Alvin.
- 49:57Ohh yeah, definitely. I don't know.
- 49:58I think that that's sobered him. Up.
- 49:59Back to the resort? No, probably not.
- 50:03And then the headlights start dimming, but I feel like my.
- 50:06Head cannon is that the headlights weren't actually
- 50:08failing. He was just like drunk and tired
- 50:10and he was like like snoozing at the wheel.
- 50:13Yeah, he's definitely doing that because, I mean, they're working
- 50:15perfectly fine after he. Yeah.
- 50:17Like we see, like the shots of him driving and his headlights
- 50:20are fine, but then, like, when it's from his perspective, it
- 50:22looks like they're dimming. Yeah.
- 50:24So I think he's just like. Not enough?
- 50:27Yeah, definitely that. I mean, it kind of makes sense
- 50:29for that to be the thing, yeah. Yeah, and then we have a full I
- 50:32know what you did last summer, because he hits somebody,
- 50:35actually kills him. So he's a little bit better than
- 50:38Ray. True.
- 50:39He's he's a more effective killer.
- 50:41Yeah. Mia got this ready.
- 50:45Mia got This is less intimidating than the blonde
- 50:48dude from I know what she did last summer where she's not like
- 50:51straight up intimidating people. She's like, she's kind of doing
- 50:54it a smart. Way.
- 50:55Yeah. Like she's like no.
- 50:57Because when you go here, she's like the police will rape you.
- 51:01They will murder you. Nobody will care.
- 51:04We will go back to the resort tonight.
- 51:06I will deal with Mr. Thrush in the morning.
- 51:09End of discussion. And you can't really argue that.
- 51:12Yeah, like, yeah, I don't really want all that stuff to happen to
- 51:14me. So OK, let's just go back.
- 51:17This is very much one of those nightmare scenarios where
- 51:19you're, like I said, yes to a spontaneous thing and now I'm
- 51:23guilty of manslaughter. What do I do?
- 51:26Is this real? Yeah.
- 51:27Well, that's one of those things because like after this you get
- 51:30a shot of James and he just is in disbelief.
- 51:34And this is like where I'm saying like he sells that face,
- 51:37so. Well, good.
- 51:39Yeah. Like, he's like huddled in on
- 51:40himself. Yeah.
- 51:41Like I said, he's like. Even though he's 7 feet tall,
- 51:44he's like a tiny shivering Chihuahua.
- 51:46Yeah. And like they are locked out of
- 51:49the resort and they make up some lie about how they got lost
- 51:53coming back from the disco, disco, The disco.
- 51:55Yeah, I. Only only Jaleel could have sold
- 51:59that lie in the way he did. I feel like anybody else saying
- 52:02the disco. It would have seemed
- 52:03disingenuous. But from him, I'm like, I
- 52:04believe you go to discos, man. I would have bought a little bit
- 52:07more if you had the caller. Just like way more flared out.
- 52:10Like, you know, most disco people do, but it's enough to
- 52:13get in. Yeah, they get in.
- 52:15And as they're walking to the rooms, James just pukes
- 52:19everywhere. Finally lets it all out.
- 52:21Yeah, and he has the worst hangover moment in the history
- 52:25of hangovers because he wakes up to pounding at the door.
- 52:29And he was like, man, what a lot of drinking I did.
- 52:32And definitely no vehicular slaughter, right?
- 52:36And then he answers the door and it's the police.
- 52:41So they take him down to the station.
- 52:44As soon as they get to the station, him and Emer separated
- 52:47and he is taken to this room and he has to put on this plain
- 52:49white gown. And I'm emphasizing plain white
- 52:51gown. And I'll explain that in a
- 52:52little bit. OK.
- 52:54So Detective Thresh comes in and he's like, before we start
- 52:57recording, I need you to agree to say that my uncle did not
- 52:59loan you his vehicle because he would get in a lot of trouble
- 53:02for that. And James is like, is that gonna
- 53:04make any difference for me? He goes absolutely none at all.
- 53:07Like, you're fucked either way. You're fucked.
- 53:10But you're rich, so you're not that fucked.
- 53:11Yeah, I would have been. Fuck yeah, man.
- 53:14You did it. Yeah, you're double somebody
- 53:18named Shresh. I don't know.
- 53:19Could have been you. Well, and I mean for him,
- 53:22technically it it's like a very technical truth because the car
- 53:27wasn't rented to him. That's true.
- 53:30It was rented to the Bowers. Yeah, well, they've fucked him
- 53:33over there. Like, OK, well yeah, I've talked
- 53:35to the Bowers and they claim that you stole the vehicle, you
- 53:40hit the person, and your wife has confirmed all of this.
- 53:44Because M said that, do you believe that she actually would
- 53:47have done that to him? Do you think that they, like,
- 53:49are fucking with him here, like trying to get him to admit this,
- 53:52or did she actually do that? I could see it as them fucking
- 53:56with him, but I could also see it like and they paid thresh to
- 54:00say this because clearly they can pay him to do anything.
- 54:02Yeah, but I could also see M doing it in like a very
- 54:06reasonable like hey, here's the situation as it happened.
- 54:09Like it was a total accident. We wanted to call the police but
- 54:11we were advised not to. Da da da da.
- 54:14Like, I could see that. And of course that nuance isn't
- 54:16going to get relayed to the cops because for all of their
- 54:20problems in their relationship, this moment, like, really seems
- 54:23to kind of sober her up and bring her back to that place of,
- 54:25like, I care about this person and I want to, yeah, make sure
- 54:28he's OK. But at the same time like if she
- 54:31sold him out and like why like? I don't think again, I don't
- 54:34think it's a selling out. I think it's like a hey, this is
- 54:37the situation as it happened, like, she seems very so that's
- 54:41like corroborating the whole thing that he stole the vehicle.
- 54:45And you know, like is responsible solely for all of
- 54:49this. I don't know, it's pretty
- 54:51shitty. But he says that the law in Los
- 54:55Olka is that the eldest son is to kill him to preserve family
- 55:00honor. However, they have this whole
- 55:02act. Basically, it's a deal with the
- 55:04tourism board that for a sum of money.
- 55:08You can have a double created. Now, the thing about the double
- 55:10is it has to be absolutely perfect and it has to have all
- 55:12of your memories. It has to fully believe that you
- 55:14committed the crime you're accused of, otherwise not really
- 55:17meeting the standards of the law.
- 55:19So he signs an agreement to do this, and then we take him to a
- 55:26bunch of people and gowns that start undressing him, putting
- 55:31little glovey things on him. The little mouth opener.
- 55:35The ball. Yeah, the little cap.
- 55:38Swim cap type thing. They're just getting him already
- 55:42and they lead him to this like, gooey shower stall.
- 55:48Yeah, that's how I described it. And it fills up with red goo.
- 55:51And then he starts having all these delusions of Gabby naked.
- 55:56Yeah, right. That's weird.
- 55:57Yeah. Like, where is that coming from?
- 55:59What are they doing in your brain?
- 56:00Like, that's just maybe his fantasies.
- 56:03I. Don't.
- 56:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:05So. We get this.
- 56:07I really like this shot after it's over.
- 56:09It just shows his pulse and his throat.
- 56:11Yeah, like I was like, that's a an effective shot for what it
- 56:16is. So Em is gently waking him up,
- 56:19making sure he's OK and saying, like they said the double came
- 56:22out perfectly, you know, are you like, are you OK?
- 56:26And he's got a headache. They take him down to see the
- 56:30double. And they tell him that they have
- 56:33to witness the execution. It's part of the the law with
- 56:37it. And like the double wakes up and
- 56:40he starts like panicking and freaking out.
- 56:42It shows them at the execution. He's in a his devil's in a white
- 56:46robe with like this embroidering at the top and the tummy part is
- 56:51cut out. Yeah, but, like, purposefully
- 56:54made because, like, it's hemmed. Like, the cut is hemmed.
- 56:57Yeah, I mean, it's for them that just he can.
- 57:00That's your target right there. Stab right there.
- 57:02Yeah, and the kid that they hire to be Myro Myron's, that's the
- 57:06name of the farmer he killed. Myro Myron.
- 57:09Wow, good, good name. To be his eldest son is so good
- 57:13at doing an evil smile. Yes, he is in this moment and
- 57:17then later on. In the movie, he's a creepy kid.
- 57:20This kid probably end up killing people eventually, I think.
- 57:23I feel like they gave him contacts or something to make
- 57:25his eyes look even darker than they were, because it almost
- 57:27seems like all people, yeah. Yeah.
- 57:31So he comes in, he's enjoying doubling or enjoying stabbing
- 57:34him. And I think it's important we
- 57:35see this shot multiple times throughout the movie because he
- 57:38gets into that red goo, right? And like we see, you know, just
- 57:42red goo coming off of him. But like this moment we see the
- 57:45kid is like stabbing him and his hand is covered in blood and we
- 57:48have a few shots later of like, blood covered hands.
- 57:51Yeah, And it's like a recurring visual element that they have
- 57:55that I think like ties it all in together.
- 57:57The murder, the doublings, Retrobutes and all.
- 58:00Of that, yeah, I could see that, Yeah, yeah.
- 58:03And then, like, it pans to the audience and sees them there.
- 58:06Everybody else is like, enjoying it, cheering Amazon.
- 58:11She is terror like she's shocked.
- 58:13She's watching her husband get murdered.
- 58:16Yeah. And.
- 58:17And like the double is pleading to M to help him.
- 58:21Yeah, yeah, that's what's the most terrifying thing.
- 58:23Like I wonder if I don't think he can see any of them.
- 58:27Like, I mean he should be able to cuz they're right there, but
- 58:29I don't think he makes he sees them at all.
- 58:32I assume it's like in an American.
- 58:35Execution chamber where it's like 2 way glass.
- 58:38I thought it was more like the light is shone, like shone on
- 58:41them. It's a dark room and it gets
- 58:42kind of blinding him. You can't really see that far
- 58:44out. That makes sense and it slowly
- 58:47zooms in on the real James's face and then he kind of like
- 58:51gets a smile. He kind of likes watching.
- 58:53Himself die. They get back to the room and M
- 58:56is packing and she's like, we need to go.
- 58:58The shuttle leaves in 15 minutes and James like, I can't find my
- 59:01passport. It's normally right in my
- 59:02backpack. And she's like, but we have to
- 59:04go. We have to go.
- 59:05We have to go. And it cuts to them sometime
- 59:08later laying there, she was clearly worn herself out.
- 59:12And he's like, I can, I understand if you want to leave
- 59:16without me. I can hang behind.
- 59:19And she's like, I don't understand how you can just be
- 59:21so OK with what you just saw. Yeah, she's like, that was.
- 59:25Disgusting. She's like, it's really fucked
- 59:27up that you were just so fine watching yourself get murdered.
- 59:31He's like, I'm gonna go down to the lobby and extend the room.
- 59:35No. Well, he says he's gonna go down
- 59:36there to see if they can help him find his passport.
- 59:39Yeah, So he goes down there and sneakily, yeah, extends his stay
- 59:42there for another week. Yeah, and while doing that,
- 59:47Gabby's down there, she approaches and he's like, OK,
- 59:50look, I know what we did. It's a little bit fucked up, but
- 59:54have a group of other people that have been through the same
- 59:56thing and we would like for you to come hang out.
- 59:58That way we can kind of explain things for you.
- 1:00:01Yeah, she explains their experience first, which is that
- 1:00:03their first year that they came by, that came to this country,
- 1:00:08they were in a nearby hotel. And this is when Alvin was still
- 1:00:11an architect and they he was helping oversee them install an
- 1:00:16Infinity pool that he had designed.
- 1:00:19See always. That's.
- 1:00:20I think it's funny that that's where the name comes from.
- 1:00:22But I mean, they're basically like another Infinity pool.
- 1:00:25Yeah, exactly. Like they get into this pool to
- 1:00:27double themselves infinitely in perpetuum.
- 1:00:30Yes. So something happened with the
- 1:00:34equipment and some glass panes fell on a joke killing two
- 1:00:39workers. And because it was his design,
- 1:00:41he ended up being held accountable.
- 1:00:43And so, yeah. And so that's when they had
- 1:00:46their first doubling experience. And she said something about it
- 1:00:49changes you. I can see it in your eyes that
- 1:00:51you, you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:00:54So at the Double Club, we meet Charles, Jennifer, Doctor Modin
- 1:00:58and Becks. And they say that the once the
- 1:01:01tokens learned that you have the money to do this, they're going
- 1:01:05to start like getting you for even little things.
- 1:01:08Yeah, and Dr. Modin is writing a paper about the doubling
- 1:01:13process. So he starts asking James
- 1:01:16questions like, do you worry if they got the wrong person?
- 1:01:18He's like, yeah, what the hell with them like?
- 1:01:20Yeah, Which like you said, it's really cool that they tackled
- 1:01:23that right there. Like, OK, you're kind of taking
- 1:01:25that thought off. People said.
- 1:01:26So that way you don't, yeah, worry about that anymore.
- 1:01:28Yeah. So that way, you know, we're not
- 1:01:29focusing on that for the rest of the movie.
- 1:01:31You just enjoy the debauchery for what it is.
- 1:01:35So he goes to get some some water and Gabby comes in and she
- 1:01:40says just trust me. And then we see the group is
- 1:01:43like cutting up and shooting and Charles says that I hey, I hear
- 1:01:46you have a passport problem. I've got a soninlaw that could
- 1:01:50probably take care of that for you, but I need you to help me
- 1:01:52with a mission and basically the resort owner of the resort that
- 1:01:57Alban and Gabby were hired for however many years ago when they
- 1:02:02had their first doubling experience.
- 1:02:05He recently received a medal and they're like, we can't ignore a
- 1:02:08slight like this for too longer. It makes us look weak.
- 1:02:10We need to go steal the metal, yes?
- 1:02:12So first they break into the gift shop and steal the masks,
- 1:02:15which I just think is also one of those things.
- 1:02:17Like they're all rich enough that they could have bought the
- 1:02:18fucking masks, and then breaking in and stealing them as part of
- 1:02:21their whole debauchery. Exactly, yeah.
- 1:02:23I like this shot of them in the car with the masks, though,
- 1:02:26because that's terrifying. I will never not be freaked out
- 1:02:29by somebody wearing a mask. I'm like slowly turning.
- 1:02:32Yeah, it kind of remind me of the strangers a little bit.
- 1:02:34That's but I thought something about me at Goth, in that mass
- 1:02:37she was wearing was very much a doll face.
- 1:02:39Yes, exactly. That's what I was thinking of
- 1:02:41too, yeah. So they get to the mansion and
- 1:02:44they round up all the people in there, including some naked
- 1:02:46people that were fucking yes. And they're just like going
- 1:02:52through, looking through their stuff.
- 1:02:54They find the metal they steal that Gabby holds up a gun to
- 1:02:58some of their heads and is like basically challenging James to a
- 1:03:02game of chicken. Yeah, she's like, have you ever
- 1:03:04fired a gun before? And he's like staying in
- 1:03:07character. He doesn't want to talk with the
- 1:03:09mask. She's abandoned her mask at this
- 1:03:10point. She's showing them her face.
- 1:03:12None of them gives a shit. Yeah, so she's, like, tempting
- 1:03:15him to shoot. He refuses.
- 1:03:17She pretends like she's going to.
- 1:03:19And then Alban comes in and there's somebody that they
- 1:03:23missed. Yeah, there's like a guard
- 1:03:25that's like hidden off to the side and he pops out and he
- 1:03:29starts blasting and there's like a little shoot off and Alvin
- 1:03:32gets shot in the leg. Yeah, so then they're like
- 1:03:35rushing through this festival that's happening in town, and I
- 1:03:38guess James's hotel room is the closest one.
- 1:03:40So they go in there and it's like, what the fuck?
- 1:03:43They still have the masks on as they're like doing that.
- 1:03:45Nobody is like like, OK, I guess like people bought them and they
- 1:03:49just. Got hurt having fun around
- 1:03:51there. I don't know, like I would be
- 1:03:52concerned seeing the chaos. That's like following them as
- 1:03:56they escort ALB into the room. And yeah, they take it back to
- 1:03:59James's room and like, why James's room of all people?
- 1:04:02I like to fuck with him because she gets back into her room.
- 1:04:04She's like, what the fuck is happening?
- 1:04:06Yeah. Then we cut to a shot of them
- 1:04:09all together in the cell, and we're meant to think that
- 1:04:11they're waiting for their doubling process.
- 1:04:14But this time around I was paying attention.
- 1:04:15They're already wearing their execution robes.
- 1:04:18They've got the little embroidery at the top.
- 1:04:20They're not wearing the same plain white robes that James had
- 1:04:23it as intake. Shit, I never.
- 1:04:25It's such a small detail and if you're not paying attention for
- 1:04:28it, you wouldn't really catch it.
- 1:04:29But because I remembered that this was a fake out because what
- 1:04:31they do is the detective comes in and they're all just like
- 1:04:34joking around complaining about how slow the service is though
- 1:04:36done. He's like, you guys think that
- 1:04:37this is just your playground and you can do whatever you want,
- 1:04:39but I feel like making an example of you takes them all
- 1:04:42into this other room, chains them up to blocks and is about
- 1:04:45to execute them. James breaks free from his guard
- 1:04:48and is like trying to fight back, but he ultimately gets his
- 1:04:51throat slit. They all get their throats slit,
- 1:04:53but then we cut to the audience and it's all of them get like
- 1:04:56plotting. Yes, applauding their double s
- 1:04:58performances. I mean, honestly, like if I were
- 1:05:01James and be like, man, I'm fucking proud.
- 1:05:03Like I actually stood up and fought them off a little bit.
- 1:05:05The rest of them just kind of sat there and got their throats
- 1:05:07slit, like they just went out on a whimper.
- 1:05:12But yeah, so it's clear that this is none of their first, or
- 1:05:17probably even second rodeos. And James has given another urn.
- 1:05:19They all have too good a time with it.
- 1:05:23Yeah. And then he sees them.
- 1:05:25He's like, what's wrong? And she's like, I'm leaving, I
- 1:05:30guess you can stay here while you and he's like, but I don't
- 1:05:32have my passport. And she goes, I don't know
- 1:05:35what's going on with you, but I've learned that I've already
- 1:05:38paid for you to stay here for another week.
- 1:05:40So when you get your passport situated, I'll be at home
- 1:05:43waiting for you. I can't be here anymore.
- 1:05:45Yeah, I don't know what's going on with you.
- 1:05:47He's like, all right, go crying back to daddy then.
- 1:05:50And that maybe if he'd literally said anything else, she would
- 1:05:53have been willing to stay and talk.
- 1:05:55But that was clearly the sticking point.
- 1:05:57She's like, all right, bye. And then he goes, no way.
- 1:06:00Wait, she? Was like, fuck, shit, I said
- 1:06:03wait, now look weak. Yeah, so James is outside in his
- 1:06:08ECHI mask smoking a cigar. I.
- 1:06:10Love that imagery. Is there a hole big enough in
- 1:06:13the mouth of the mask for him to actually go puff on that cigar?
- 1:06:16Is it just an aesthetic? I'm not mad either way.
- 1:06:19No, I I was thinking that myself when I was watching that last
- 1:06:23night. But like, it's just too cool to
- 1:06:25not do so. Yeah, just whatever, man.
- 1:06:27Let it roll, Gabby says that she can undo the weakness that Evan
- 1:06:32stilled in him. Yeah, she's like, yeah, feeding
- 1:06:36them like shit. They're like trying.
- 1:06:38Yeah, you're a man. You can, you know, do this right
- 1:06:40here. You just how you should be.
- 1:06:41She's the opposite end of toxic masculinity, which is like those
- 1:06:46women that will, like kind of reinforce that idea.
- 1:06:48Like, yeah, you're a big, strong provider.
- 1:06:50I'll be at home taking care of the house and the kids and you
- 1:06:54do what you need it. Like she's that other end of it.
- 1:06:56Like feeding it. Failing successfully, Ohh.
- 1:07:02She explains the ECKY gate, which is a root drug.
- 1:07:05It is a hallucinogenic and an aphrodisiac.
- 1:07:08So they breathe in some drugs and have an orgy.
- 1:07:13And guess what? Because James is who James is.
- 1:07:16He is a bottom in every scenario.
- 1:07:19It's so OK. It gets wild.
- 1:07:22Like, it starts off with them having sex.
- 1:07:24And the funniest imagery from that is like him kneeling at the
- 1:07:28edge of the bed, just like jerking off.
- 1:07:30Like yeah, what? The fuck is happening?
- 1:07:31That's Alban. That's Alban.
- 1:07:33Yeah, I thought that was James. No, it's when Gabby is on top of
- 1:07:36James. Oh.
- 1:07:36OK, because, like, it's funny how it just transitions into an
- 1:07:39orgy. I just thought that that was
- 1:07:41James just like crouching down the bed just down there.
- 1:07:43Like doing that while she's laying on the bed.
- 1:07:45We get We get woman and man, man and man, woman and woman.
- 1:07:49We get all the combinations here.
- 1:07:51We get twos and threes and fours.
- 1:07:52We get everybody together. We get a naked mask ritual with
- 1:07:55me and goth walking through. I don't know.
- 1:07:57It's disturbing. It is, yeah.
- 1:08:01And they're all wearing the upsetting masks the entire time.
- 1:08:03Yeah, it's the masks that are disturbing.
- 1:08:05I mean, whatever. If you haven't, orgy with
- 1:08:07consenting adults is your business, but the mask thing is
- 1:08:10what is is upsetting to me to watch.
- 1:08:13Yeah, yeah. That's because there's Masks are
- 1:08:15scary. To me, yeah, this is kind of
- 1:08:17what I was thinking about before, Like where, like that's
- 1:08:20where I thought maybe they were kind of looking like that.
- 1:08:22Like, maybe that's where the masks got their inspiration
- 1:08:24from, is from like all these people that got doubled.
- 1:08:26So I don't know. What a fucking happens here.
- 1:08:30Yeah, there's a lot of like things coming out of nipples
- 1:08:34and. Yeah.
- 1:08:35Oh my God, that's the most upsetting part.
- 1:08:38Like the nipples grow and then like, they're like sucking the
- 1:08:41things out of their nipples. Like what is this?
- 1:08:44Ohh man, I've never been so upset by a nipple.
- 1:08:47God, thank you for reminding me that, by the way, like I was
- 1:08:51ready. Like I That was a long pass in
- 1:08:53my memory, but now I have to think about it again.
- 1:08:56Nope. If I have to remember the
- 1:08:57nipple. If you remember the nipple.
- 1:08:59Terrible. And again, James, just on the
- 1:09:01bottom for everything, yeah. All right.
- 1:09:05So now the next morning, yeah. And the guy?
- 1:09:10Yeah, there's a guy eating his, looking really annoyed, and
- 1:09:14cherries keep laying on his table.
- 1:09:15And then we cut over to an incredibly greasy, gooey James.
- 1:09:19He's got his hair slicked back like a real piece of shit, yes,
- 1:09:23and he's shirtless, wearing that metal, and he's dipping his
- 1:09:26fingers in this jar of Marashino cherries, getting cherry juice
- 1:09:29all over his face and chest. And then he's spitting the
- 1:09:33cherries at this table. Very upsetting.
- 1:09:35Display This is the mean kid table in high school.
- 1:09:38That's like throwing spitballs at the nerds.
- 1:09:41That's what they are. This is what the mean kids grew
- 1:09:44out to be. That guy's like, fuck it, I'm
- 1:09:45leaving. Yeah, just like, get up and
- 1:09:47leave. Like totally.
- 1:09:48Well, cuz I kid was at the nerd table in high school.
- 1:09:51He knows. Like you just leave?
- 1:09:53Yeah. He's like, I'm a successful
- 1:09:55engineer. I can afford this resort.
- 1:09:57I shouldn't be getting bullied anymore.
- 1:09:59Yeah. James is being a real ass here,
- 1:10:01for sure. Yeah, everybody's just cheering
- 1:10:03him on, laughing about. He's sniffing his own farts,
- 1:10:05he's enjoyed himself way too much and they're all encouraging
- 1:10:10it because it's all part of their mean girl game.
- 1:10:13Yeah, and then the guy is before saying, like, I can help you get
- 1:10:16your passport, he tells him. Oh yeah.
- 1:10:18I'm hearing now that Thrush is actually preventing you from
- 1:10:21getting your passport. So we need to teach him a
- 1:10:24lesson. Guess what?
- 1:10:26He's got heart problems. He's got a treatment at the
- 1:10:28hospital tonight. I said we pay him a little
- 1:10:31visit. James.
- 1:10:32Is that logic pan out? Do you think attacking the
- 1:10:36detective that supposedly is holding up your departure from
- 1:10:38this country is going to help you get out of the country
- 1:10:40faster? Whatever.
- 1:10:41James isn't smart. He's here for a good time.
- 1:10:42Now he's like, I'm here for like 6 years, A good time and a long
- 1:10:46time. Yes, exactly.
- 1:10:48And so they get to the hospital and they put James on lookout
- 1:10:51duty, which he should have been immediately suspicious of,
- 1:10:53because if this is supposed to be his payback, revenge mission,
- 1:10:57why is he on lookout? That's a good point.
- 1:11:00And also like. He's no good out there, cuz a
- 1:11:03van drives by and tries to run him over and he just dodges.
- 1:11:05He doesn't tell with them. He doesn't warn people.
- 1:11:07I would hardly even say he dodges, I say.
- 1:11:09He kind of like sways out of the way because he is so fucking
- 1:11:12drunk. He gives it like a little
- 1:11:14shimmy. Yeah, he's like, so they bring
- 1:11:20out somebody and they roll him into a van and they take him
- 1:11:25back to the hotel room and they bring him out bag headed and
- 1:11:28they're like, all right, James, do you think show them your
- 1:11:31strings? It starts like strutting around
- 1:11:33in circles around them. Yeah, like, whoa, I like that.
- 1:11:37Yeah, keep it going. And he starts their reactions.
- 1:11:41So they're all, like, just being very casual, like somebody's
- 1:11:46drinking a drink, somebody's eating a bowl of cereal.
- 1:11:49Um, one of the. I think Becks has, like, her
- 1:11:51phone out and was recording the whole thing.
- 1:11:53Yeah. It feels almost like in It's
- 1:11:56Always Sunny when they're at their high school reunion and
- 1:11:58they're doing the dance. Oh, yeah.
- 1:12:00Like it feels like the dream sequence or it feels like
- 1:12:02they're all cheering him on. Yeah.
- 1:12:04Yeah. As he's like, doing all this.
- 1:12:05And Alvin joins in pissing on him.
- 1:12:07And then they. And then, uh, Gabby struts over
- 1:12:11to the body and removes the bag. And it's just another shivering
- 1:12:15double of James. Yeah.
- 1:12:18Before this, he's also taken more of the drug from before.
- 1:12:21So he's tripping hard again. Yeah.
- 1:12:23And then like he gets to see that, oh, he just be and pissed
- 1:12:27all over himself and that freaks him out.
- 1:12:29So he runs away and goes back to his room.
- 1:12:32And then from his room he hears some singing outside, so he goes
- 1:12:36to look and they're out there serenading him with their masks
- 1:12:40on. And then Gabby's now at the
- 1:12:42door. Hanging on the door, giving him
- 1:12:44shit. Like, come on James, don't be
- 1:12:46weak. You look so unattractive.
- 1:12:47No, At first she's like, it was just a joke, Jamesy.
- 1:12:51Yeah, like just a joke. We're just having a bit of fun.
- 1:12:54She's like, do you want me to bring the double here and you
- 1:12:56can both fuck me at once? Hot.
- 1:13:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't tell me James wouldn't get
- 1:13:04off on fucking somebody else with.
- 1:13:05Himself for a second. He's like, I just pissed on
- 1:13:10myself. Like, am I gonna have to fuck
- 1:13:12with the one that he's like, did I just discover that I'm into
- 1:13:14that? Yeah, this is like this is too
- 1:13:16much. This is getting too, yeah.
- 1:13:19And then he's like not answering her.
- 1:13:21She goes, you're being weak and it's pathetic.
- 1:13:25And so then we see him grab his passport that he hid under the
- 1:13:28sink. That was whenever that happened
- 1:13:31in the theater. Flat twisted this movie.
- 1:13:33I was like, oh shit, like cuz I first was like, oh man, he
- 1:13:36forgot his passport. That sucks.
- 1:13:37But now I'm like, oh this guy just fucking worn it this entire
- 1:13:40time. Yeah, it's fucking crazy, he
- 1:13:42wanted an excuse to say. And again, because he's a little
- 1:13:45sad boy, he can just tell his wife like, hey, I'm finally
- 1:13:48starting to feel excited being here.
- 1:13:50I'm starting to get a tingling of inspiration, even though this
- 1:13:54is all fucked up. Can we stay a little bit longer
- 1:13:56while I process this? And maybe that's what I'm
- 1:13:59saying. Like he instead of saying that
- 1:14:01he takes a cowards route and hides his passport.
- 1:14:04Yeah, no. The way that he goes about that,
- 1:14:06like I everything posts the beginning of this movie, I'm
- 1:14:10against him. He's fucking sucks.
- 1:14:11But like, he knew the answer to that.
- 1:14:13He knew that she wouldn't support that.
- 1:14:15So he's like, OK, I'm gonna just hide it So he gets on the
- 1:14:18airport shuttle and his best disguise, which is a hat, a hat
- 1:14:23and sunglasses. Sunglasses.
- 1:14:24Which, to be fair, that's like, he's a big fan of Joe Goldberg
- 1:14:28on you. That's some magic disguise hat.
- 1:14:30That's the typical celebrity disguise, though.
- 1:14:33You go in public, you're an actor.
- 1:14:34Hat. Sunglasses.
- 1:14:36You're golden. So he thinks he's safe on the
- 1:14:38shuttle, and then a car pulls up and it's his buddies.
- 1:14:44Oh my God. OK, they basically forced the
- 1:14:46shuttle to pull to the side of the road and Gabby is saying
- 1:14:51please, James E please come out. No, it's it's OK.
- 1:14:56She gives him a chance to come out and then she says members of
- 1:14:59the bus send James out. I'm going to start shooting you.
- 1:15:02He's a she. There was a lot of insultances
- 1:15:06that he had sell his own mother from meat.
- 1:15:08We're you're completely skipping over the whole thing of her
- 1:15:12being. I'm wondering what the direction
- 1:15:14was for her here, because the way that she's saying all this
- 1:15:18stuff is so over the top. It's like James E like, I love
- 1:15:26how unhinged she is, though. It's super unhinged.
- 1:15:30She's been so cool and collected this whole time and now she's
- 1:15:32very much. She feels like Honey Bunny at
- 1:15:35the beginning of Pulp Fiction, where she's like, I'll shoot
- 1:15:37every last motherfucking I wanna.
- 1:15:39Y'all, it's way more like over the top.
- 1:15:42It's it's almost like absurdly so, like, I don't know.
- 1:15:44It's it's more unhinged. I feel like it's such a leap
- 1:15:49that it. Comes across as jarring.
- 1:15:51Personally, I don't. I know a lot of people love
- 1:15:54this, like people love this part of her here, but I think it's
- 1:15:57just way too over the top for her.
- 1:15:59I like it because now we know there's absolutely no, no lies
- 1:16:04going on and then you know what I mean?
- 1:16:05And she's just letting loose. Whenever he finally comes out,
- 1:16:09whenever, like her reaction to it, it's just so crazy.
- 1:16:12I don't know like I. I I thought it was too much.
- 1:16:15I liked it. Personally, it's fucking
- 1:16:17annoying. Like it it would be enough to
- 1:16:19Get Me Out the way that she is with it.
- 1:16:22But like, yeah, no, I it's it's a lot.
- 1:16:25And then we have what I call the shame parade.
- 1:16:28Oh my God. And I listen.
- 1:16:30Me and Goth spread on the hood of a car.
- 1:16:32Drinking her wine is a. Bucket of chicken?
- 1:16:36Yeah, bucket of chicken. Yeah, just marching James along
- 1:16:39in front of them while she just reads off and well, she's
- 1:16:41insult. Yeah, she's insulting him,
- 1:16:43calling him a little sucky baby, saying that she never even read
- 1:16:46his book, and then she pulls out a review she had in her purse
- 1:16:50and starts reading it. Probably the harshest review,
- 1:16:53yeah. It's so bad.
- 1:16:55This person just absolutely shits all over James.
- 1:16:58Well, and like, here's the thing, because we we all rude
- 1:17:01reviews on here because we want to get a different perspective,
- 1:17:03but we always make an effort to not pick one that just shits on
- 1:17:07it and necessarily like we want to get an actual perspective on
- 1:17:11it. Yeah, I mean, which, again, I've
- 1:17:15said that I think James is a pretentious, fucking sad boy.
- 1:17:18But the things in the review that he's reading don't really
- 1:17:22explain why they don't like the book.
- 1:17:24I mean, if you're a critic, yeah, I don't think you need to
- 1:17:26go into the details of, like your theory on how he got it
- 1:17:29published because he's married to like a well known publisher.
- 1:17:34Like, that's kind of going too far.
- 1:17:36But whatever, Like it cuts him to his core.
- 1:17:39You can tell that this right here actually has an impact on
- 1:17:41James. Yeah, but then she drops her
- 1:17:43wine and something she, the way she like, completely stops
- 1:17:49paying any attention to James and she goes, I opened my wine.
- 1:17:52Like I don't know why, but I loved that moment cuz like I
- 1:17:56feel like that's how I react sometimes when I drop.
- 1:17:58So I'm like, Oh no. Yeah.
- 1:18:02So he takes it as this opportunity to wrestle the gun
- 1:18:06away from her, but he fells. And then he just, like, runs off
- 1:18:09to the woods, Yeah. And he gets shot in the leg.
- 1:18:12Yeah, 'cause he's running, she's.
- 1:18:13Blind popping into the woods and miraculously hits him in the
- 1:18:16leg. James keeps walking and he finds
- 1:18:20a farm. While he's there, he gets help.
- 1:18:23And then as he's recovering in the bed, the eldest son of Myra
- 1:18:30Myron pops up and comes over and strangles him.
- 1:18:33Except now he's seeing his wife and doing it and he's
- 1:18:36hallucinating. All of the double club are
- 1:18:39around him. And this isn't real, right?
- 1:18:42None of this is real, I don't think.
- 1:18:43I think it's just him dreaming. Yeah, I think he is actually in
- 1:18:46the farm, but I don't think that the little boys there.
- 1:18:49Or and even then like that, like twins.
- 1:18:52Everything like that could be not him, but what are the odds?
- 1:18:56I know, yeah. Either way.
- 1:18:57So he wakes up and then walks outside and all of his friends
- 1:19:01are there and they're dressed in their black tie clothing like a
- 1:19:06big events coming. And basically, Gabby says that
- 1:19:11they're on a mission of mercy to shed his larval mind and find
- 1:19:15the real creature inside of him. Deep.
- 1:19:20They're like they're trying to help him as a phrase it.
- 1:19:24So they say that to do that he must sacrifice the dog, which is
- 1:19:30a double of him that they have broken.
- 1:19:34OK, I'm. I'm Whenever that happened, I
- 1:19:36was just happy that it wasn't an actual dog.
- 1:19:39Yeah, right, like. Because when they say you gotta
- 1:19:41sacrifice the dog, I'm like, Oh no, what the fuck?
- 1:19:43Please. But then it's just him on a
- 1:19:46collar, yeah, And he's like walking on all fours.
- 1:19:49Like, they've got him totally submissive and he refuses.
- 1:19:51Yeah, they give him a gun. He takes a gun.
- 1:19:53No, they give him a knife. Yeah, he just throws the knife
- 1:19:56away, but then the dog quote, UN quote, it's just the packs him.
- 1:20:01So he ends up beating it to death and this is where we get
- 1:20:04more of that, like red handed imagery.
- 1:20:06Yeah cuz he beats it so hard that he caves a skull in like he
- 1:20:12goes primal and then after he finishes that Gabby comforts him
- 1:20:18and then she just takes her tit, puts it down and just lets him
- 1:20:22suck on. No.
- 1:20:23She rubs some of the blood on her booby first.
- 1:20:25First, yes, some blood on the booby.
- 1:20:27And then he starts just sucking on it.
- 1:20:30I want that band. I want that band's album Blood
- 1:20:34on the booby, blood on the booby.
- 1:20:36Yeah, Can you imagine the tshirt possibilities for their merch
- 1:20:41table? I feel like the single for that
- 1:20:43album's gotta be called Jamesy. Yeah, James is a sucky baby.
- 1:20:47Yeah, That's it. Yeah.
- 1:20:49Yeah. So we cut to James, cleaned up
- 1:20:54hair. Still slicked back, though,
- 1:20:55because he's transformed into a real piece of shit.
- 1:20:58Well, he's he did the thing that they said.
- 1:21:00It's the true James. He calls him, apologizes, says
- 1:21:03he's coming home. He's got his three earrings in
- 1:21:06his suitcase. Go third earn now.
- 1:21:08Yep, Yep. I like that they still took it
- 1:21:10to get cremated after the fact, yeah.
- 1:21:12I mean, you know, he did the deed he deserves the.
- 1:21:15Yeah, the like, you know what souvenir you guys stole this
- 1:21:20double. Like you guys weren't supposed
- 1:21:22to have this one. Like, yeah, well, we killed it
- 1:21:23anyway, so, well, they. Bribed the detective for it.
- 1:21:26Did they? I thought that they actually
- 1:21:27kidnapped. No, they said that they, like,
- 1:21:29bribed the detective to get another double, OK.
- 1:21:33Yeah, so they're all on the shuttle together, and I love how
- 1:21:36casual and non made-up they are because they've all been dressed
- 1:21:39so nicely, so put together. But like, Gabby's got like a
- 1:21:43messy bun on and like, she's just wearing a crocheted sweater
- 1:21:47and they're like, oh, what are you doing?
- 1:21:48She goes, oh, well, Alvin has to go back to work, so I'll
- 1:21:51probably rearrange the hat like they're yeah, I do it for fun.
- 1:21:53Like, Oh my God, I do that too. Yeah.
- 1:21:55They're just like having such boring conversations, and James
- 1:21:58is almost like disassociating listening to it.
- 1:22:01Is like breaking his brain to see them post vacation mode.
- 1:22:05Yeah, like he like, he can't go back to that.
- 1:22:09And then Alvin and Gabby, as they're leaving, saying it's
- 1:22:12really nice to meet you. Hope we see you here next year.
- 1:22:15And it's like, are they actually friends?
- 1:22:16Did that? Like, is he really part of their
- 1:22:18club? Are they gonna fuck with them
- 1:22:20some more? I can't tell with them.
- 1:22:22I think it's all meaningless. I think they think so.
- 1:22:25Maybe they went through the same process with the other people
- 1:22:28that they're there with now. Yeah, like kind of like a hazing
- 1:22:31process. So like now, like, OK, next year
- 1:22:34you will be part of the group and then you'll fuck with
- 1:22:36somebody else. Yeah, and you'll feel better for
- 1:22:39it because that's how the cycle of abuse works.
- 1:22:41Yeah, it'll take you a full year to get past this whole thing.
- 1:22:44We'll be we're sure you'll still be here.
- 1:22:46Except for him, because he's just sitting there letting
- 1:22:51everybody board their flights and then they call last boarding
- 1:22:54from the flight to Melbourne and.
- 1:22:57He doesn't get on it and said he goes back to the resort even
- 1:23:00though it's all closed because it's the rainy season and he's
- 1:23:02just sitting out there in the rain.
- 1:23:04Yep, just like sitting on the beach.
- 1:23:06Yep. And then that's it.
- 1:23:09That's it, man. I really like this movie.
- 1:23:14It's one of those that gives you a lot to chew on and a lot of
- 1:23:17different things to take away from, like how you want to
- 1:23:20interpret it and what messaging there is and.
- 1:23:23Yeah, there's probably so many more things that we missed, like
- 1:23:26little cues and hints and stuff. I I think it's just such a good
- 1:23:32baby. I'm actually gonna bump it to an
- 1:23:338.5. Yeah, I was actually thinking
- 1:23:35I'm gonna bump mine into an 8. No, I I really like this movie
- 1:23:39more. After watching it again, it's
- 1:23:43just a more enjoyable ride. After watching it the first
- 1:23:46time, the first time, you're kind of feeling it out and then
- 1:23:48you know what to expect afterwards.
- 1:23:50So going in for a second, watch if you haven't watched it yet
- 1:23:54and you were kind of or watched it again yet for like a second
- 1:23:57viewing and you were kind of iffy on it the first time, I
- 1:24:00definitely recommend giving it another shot because I just
- 1:24:03those expectations and you'll have a good time with this one.
- 1:24:06Yeah, I'm telling you, had a good time with it.
- 1:24:09She started off. She was showing off her tummy.
- 1:24:12She was like sitting up at different parts.
- 1:24:14Yeah, she was playing with some of her toys and she did need to
- 1:24:18go out at 47 minutes. So she didn't need to take a mid
- 1:24:21movie break, which also I think it's important to note the Hulu
- 1:24:25ads. You have like 3 ads within the
- 1:24:27first 45 minutes and then it's like alright, the rest of it, no
- 1:24:31ads, just go like before the 1st double is killed is on, the last
- 1:24:35ad is and then the rest is broken.
- 1:24:38Yeah, hinges are off. You just like, sit and strap in
- 1:24:41for the rest of this ride. Yeah, so I think Talia is gonna
- 1:24:44give this an 8 because that's how many pause she would have if
- 1:24:48she was doubled. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:24:52So she's right there with us? Pretty much.
- 1:24:55So we didn't really watch this one, did she?
- 1:24:56She was in and out, like she was back in the bedroom and then she
- 1:24:59came and sat on my lap and then she went to the kitchen and she
- 1:25:01came back and sat on my lap. So she was like in and out.
- 1:25:04I would say maybe she watched half of it.
- 1:25:06Yes, I I think about half at least.
- 1:25:09Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:10Is there anything you would change?
- 1:25:12Well, I I really don't know if there's anything that I would
- 1:25:16change, OK? Like, it's a weird one.
- 1:25:19Like, there's things that I would like for it to explore,
- 1:25:22but I appreciate that it didn't do that because it ended up
- 1:25:25being a different experience. And I think this is a movie that
- 1:25:28is good. Like, I I prefer stuff like this
- 1:25:31to go against what I'm expecting because I think it's more
- 1:25:35effective that way. I really am curious about like
- 1:25:39exploring that impact a little bit more, like especially like
- 1:25:43what happened to him there at the end, why he didn't decide
- 1:25:47to. I like that it's ambiguous.
- 1:25:49I'm just curious like why did he not go?
- 1:25:53Is there no going back for him from everything that he just had
- 1:25:57happen? Like, can he not return to his
- 1:26:00normal life after experiencing all of that again?
- 1:26:02Yeah, not in the way that the others are, but I think also
- 1:26:05it's because he doesn't have that like partnership with it
- 1:26:08because they've all gone through it all together and he doesn't
- 1:26:10have anybody that he's sharing that experience with and I
- 1:26:13think. That's a big part of his
- 1:26:14relationship with M is that they're just coming from such
- 1:26:17two different backgrounds. Yeah.
- 1:26:19And they're not sharing in their current life in the way that,
- 1:26:23like, a functional relationship would.
- 1:26:27Yeah. And he, like, I think their
- 1:26:29relationship was dying even before this vacation.
- 1:26:31But now he has changed so much. And that's like the final death
- 1:26:35knell for them anyway. I'm surprised that she was
- 1:26:37taking them back, right? Like after everything that she
- 1:26:40wouldn't, She didn't even see the worst of it.
- 1:26:42Yeah, she saw them bring back. A bloody album, Yeah.
- 1:26:48And that was when she drew the line.
- 1:26:50Good for her for drawing it then, because it's like it got
- 1:26:53real ugly there. Yeah.
- 1:26:55I don't know. There's a lot.
- 1:26:56I like this movie and I I there are things that I would would
- 1:27:01like to explore, but I'm glad that they didn't.
- 1:27:04Maybe in a sequel, but I don't know if this is the one that
- 1:27:06needs a sequel either. I feel like this is a perfect
- 1:27:08standalone movie. However, if it were to have a
- 1:27:11sequel, what premise would you want to explode?
- 1:27:13OK, if we were to do a sequel. I think it'd be interesting to
- 1:27:20see maybe M come back looking for him because obviously he
- 1:27:25never returned to Melbourne. Like she finds, like she's
- 1:27:28actually concerned for him now And what's the work on?
- 1:27:31The marriage she's concerned for his say, if nothing else, they
- 1:27:33did spend 10 years of their life together, and she wants to make
- 1:27:36sure he's at least OK because she seems like she would have
- 1:27:39that compassion. Even recognizing their
- 1:27:41relationships over still having compassion for him as a human
- 1:27:44being, she comes back looking for him.
- 1:27:48Something happens where she is doubled.
- 1:27:51I would like to see her be doubled, like that way she could
- 1:27:55maybe start to like experience, maybe with her because she was
- 1:28:00very upset by seeing the process and she was the only one that
- 1:28:04hadn't gone through it. She just got to witness
- 1:28:06everything without actually going through it.
- 1:28:07I would like to see her being able to sit there with that,
- 1:28:11like having done that for like a year or maybe a few months
- 1:28:14because he never returns and she goes looking for him.
- 1:28:17And yeah, it happens to her and she does have the money.
- 1:28:19She can afford to do it, Yeah. And then we can explore those
- 1:28:23things through her. Yeah.
- 1:28:25'Cause maybe she doesn't have the same like inclination as the
- 1:28:28rest of the map did, the doubling process, maybe it
- 1:28:30changes her, but not in the same way it changed the others.
- 1:28:34So I think that would be an interesting Yeah, I think so
- 1:28:36too. Yeah.
- 1:28:37OK, Like one of the clones. Like Alexander, Scarscart has an
- 1:28:42imperfect clone and Spill Scarscart I.
- 1:28:47Think that would be That would be hilarious.
- 1:28:48That would be so good it would be funny.
- 1:28:55OK. She relate to ohh God, who did I
- 1:28:58relate to from this bunch? I think I related to him because
- 1:29:01I would be horrified that all of the things that happened in this
- 1:29:04movie, not one thing about this movie like what I enjoy.
- 1:29:09And she didn't either. Like she was pretty much upset
- 1:29:11the entire time. I would be too.
- 1:29:14I think maybe second to the resort would have been cool like
- 1:29:16she wanted to. I would have liked to have go,
- 1:29:18like go visit a city and go to a Chinese restaurant in town, you
- 1:29:22know? But yeah, I don't know.
- 1:29:24OK, how about you? I think there are a lot of
- 1:29:29little lines that I relate to Gabby with, like I jumped my
- 1:29:35way. Yeah, I specialize.
- 1:29:38I'm failing naturally, Those little moments with her that I'm
- 1:29:41like, I feel some type of way about her.
- 1:29:45I don't. I hope I'm not that much of A
- 1:29:47psychopath, but I do feel like I have kind of a grading laugh
- 1:29:51that people will be like it's a little bit too much.
- 1:29:53No, you don't have anything compared to hers.
- 1:29:55I definitely feel that way when I'm like editing.
- 1:29:58I edit out a lot of my laughter when it's my weekday.
- 1:30:01We're our biggest critics. I like your laugh.
- 1:30:04I love it. OK, new tag on it.
- 1:30:08I have a pitch, OK. Come play with us.
- 1:30:12Forever and ever and ever. I think that's funny if we're
- 1:30:16doing quote, so I also think James is a piss baby would be.
- 1:30:20Sucky baby A sucky baby James is a sucky baby would be a fun one.
- 1:30:25Is you is or is you ain't my sucky baby.
- 1:30:30This one doesn't have, like, an actual tagline.
- 1:30:32Like what would be a serious tagline for this?
- 1:30:35Yeah, I just keep coming up with dumb shit.
- 1:30:38Like you can check out anytime you like, but you can never
- 1:30:41leave. Yeah, you're just like going to
- 1:30:45quotes of like songs and. Other very derivative.
- 1:30:47Right now it's fine. I wonder if you can do something
- 1:30:50with the pool part. Yeah, I was gonna say dive in
- 1:30:53head first. If we're doing quotes, you could
- 1:30:57do doublement. Gone.
- 1:30:58Double the pleasure, double the fun.
- 1:31:02Fail naturally and feel spectacularly.
- 1:31:06Okay. I think that that's pretty good,
- 1:31:09cuz that's signing in some things there.
- 1:31:11Yeah, failing naturally cuz of her.
- 1:31:13And then all of these are him failing.
- 1:31:15Spectacularly. Yeah, you're right.
- 1:31:18Okay. Cool.
- 1:31:19All right. Did you get us an Internet
- 1:31:23review? I did Okay.
- 1:31:25Let me pull that up. Tries way too hard.
- 1:31:29Ends up being silly. OK, I'm upset that I'm giving
- 1:31:32this such a low review. I just felt like it didn't
- 1:31:34really amount to anything except for shock.
- 1:31:36For the sake of shock and weirdness.
- 1:31:37For the sake of weirdness. This movie doesn't really
- 1:31:40accomplish anything that wasn't previously accomplished by
- 1:31:42superior films in similar veins such as Speak No Evil.
- 1:31:45The visuals were admittedly cool and the overall aesthetic of the
- 1:31:48movie was well done, but what was the point?
- 1:31:51It ultimately just amounted to being a very pretentious, try
- 1:31:54hard, extreme film for commercial audiences.
- 1:31:56I felt like it tried very hard to be thought provoking when it
- 1:31:58was really just leaving out details and not really finishing
- 1:32:01anything. It started with.
- 1:32:02On top of that, the ending scenes with Mia Goff freaking
- 1:32:05out were very hard to take seriously.
- 1:32:07I wasn't sure if the director meant for that to be comedic or
- 1:32:09not. I think a little bit.
- 1:32:13Is that it? Yeah.
- 1:32:14OK, I get it. Like, I do feel like this movie.
- 1:32:18I don't really know if they make a clear message or if they're
- 1:32:21even making a message. I think there's a lot of
- 1:32:23commentary here I don't necessarily like.
- 1:32:26I'm not going to pretend that like you're super deep and I'm
- 1:32:28super intellectual for figuring it out.
- 1:32:30I do think it has a lot of messaging that it has.
- 1:32:33I think it leaves a lot of stuff up to interpretation.
- 1:32:36But I can also understand what like, like I said the beginning.
- 1:32:39I get how this movie doesn't hit for everybody.
- 1:32:41It hits extremely well for me. I like that there ultimately is
- 1:32:45no point to everything they put him through.
- 1:32:47Yeah, cuz like this right here. Like, it feels like a movie that
- 1:32:52is meant to have some kind of deep message behind it.
- 1:32:55But like, I think really what happened is he came up with an
- 1:32:58interesting concept. He started writing and then he
- 1:33:00just kind of had fun with it. And yeah, he just put him in
- 1:33:03like all these ridiculous situations and just wanted to
- 1:33:05see what he could do with his characters because like, but
- 1:33:08when you have double s, your possibilities are like opened
- 1:33:12way more. And ultimately, that's what the
- 1:33:15characters themselves are doing. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:33:17Yeah. They're like, we have these
- 1:33:18opportunities. Let's open it up and have fun
- 1:33:20and do whatever fucked up thing we can come up with.
- 1:33:22Yeah, and you know, I think that's fine.
- 1:33:26Like a lot of movies, a lot of movies have meanings in them.
- 1:33:30I'm very superficial whenever it comes to that stuff.
- 1:33:32Like, I just kind of take a lot of things at face value and I
- 1:33:35don't really look for, like the hidden meanings behind a lot of
- 1:33:38things, like scary shit, fun shit.
- 1:33:41Like, I just enjoy the ride. And I think, honestly, I feel
- 1:33:45like that's just kind of what this movie is like.
- 1:33:47He's like, yeah, like rich people suck.
- 1:33:50But like, that's as far as it goes.
- 1:33:52That's the deepness of this movie.
- 1:33:54Let's just have some fun. Yeah, let's take this premise
- 1:33:56and get wild with it. Yeah, like I said again, I get
- 1:34:00why people wanted something different out of it.
- 1:34:01I am very happy with the final product though.
- 1:34:03Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it too, yeah.
- 1:34:05Do we have any listener reviews? Yes, we have a decent amount
- 1:34:08actually. I'm glad.
- 1:34:10I'm glad that we got a lot of love for this movie.
- 1:34:12Well, I hope it's love, yeah. Glad that we got a lot of people
- 1:34:17that have seen it. Tucker just likes in and saying
- 1:34:21accidentally left off the end of the review.
- 1:34:23I'm gonna message we're recording it right now.
- 1:34:25What is it? OK, well, then we'll start off
- 1:34:30with the ones that have completed and we'll go ahead and
- 1:34:33go to Instagram where First off we have cube saves, says I like
- 1:34:39this last one more, but I really like this one a lot.
- 1:34:42OK, which we don't have anything to compare with.
- 1:34:44I've heard some people say that. I'm glad that this was our
- 1:34:48introduction to his direction because I came in with no
- 1:34:53expectations. Yeah, well, I mean coming with a
- 1:34:55little bit because Cronenberg like he there's that.
- 1:34:58It's unfortunate for him because like this is that shit.
- 1:35:01Like, you know, it shouldn't be his reputation too, but it.
- 1:35:04Is I mean well, but also Possessor kind of hit those
- 1:35:08beats from what I could tell. So I kind of figured maybe he
- 1:35:10was following his footsteps. So you know nothing bad about
- 1:35:15it, but really interested in checking out possessor.
- 1:35:19OK then next we have Michael Lee Howard who says I can see how
- 1:35:26Infinity pool could be divisive. I entered without knowing
- 1:35:29anything about the film. I was surprised at each turn as
- 1:35:32it sent me on an adventure. It was an equal part scifi,
- 1:35:35horror and drama taking down a dark and confusing path.
- 1:35:39Our narrator at times feels unreliable, but you also feel
- 1:35:42compassion for his constant confusion.
- 1:35:45By the end you get the sense he is the only one in the group
- 1:35:48that has a moral compass. I definitely feel like I need to
- 1:35:51watch this again, but based on my first viewing I would give
- 1:35:54this a 7.75 out of 10. I definitely disagree with how
- 1:35:59you feel about James. I agree with Gabby that he's a
- 1:36:03sucky baby. But yeah, I mean, it is a
- 1:36:06confusing ride. And we do get a lot of it
- 1:36:07through the lens of an unreliable narrator, which I do
- 1:36:10think is kind of a big part of the, like the fuck up itness of
- 1:36:13the editing. Yeah, I kind of get what he's
- 1:36:16saying. It's kind of, I don't know,
- 1:36:18like. I feel bad as a human that he's
- 1:36:20going through this. Yeah, like as a human, I don't
- 1:36:23want other humans to go through this as a person.
- 1:36:25Like I said, I don't want to be friends with James.
- 1:36:27I don't want him in my social circle.
- 1:36:29Yeah. I mean, I guess seeing how he
- 1:36:32acts, yeah, but like, at the end, he's just so fucking
- 1:36:35damaged by the end of it. Yeah, I think he doesn't really
- 1:36:38know who he is anymore. Yeah, but I agree with the 7.75.
- 1:36:43I was lower than that on my first watch.
- 1:36:45I was, I'd say I'd probably had put it out of six maybe, but
- 1:36:49rewatch. I'm back up here at 8:00, so
- 1:36:51definitely do a rewatch. Maybe give it some time or
- 1:36:55however one you want to give. Something like that, let.
- 1:36:58It settle a little bit and then rewatch.
- 1:37:00Yeah. OK And we have the rest of
- 1:37:02Tucker's review here we're going to go into right now.
- 1:37:05All right. So Tucker says if you look in
- 1:37:08the sea Amlith the Beowulf turned into James E Miegos,
- 1:37:11Little Subpup, this is the flick for you.
- 1:37:14Infinity Pole is a harrowing and discussing island side
- 1:37:17deconstruction of the human ego that questions how far a
- 1:37:20mediocre man is willing to go in order to believe that he is
- 1:37:24something more thank you. Featuring stellar performances
- 1:37:28from Skarsgard and modern scream queen Mia Goth, who choose the
- 1:37:32scenery like Theta the Alligator going at Hot Blondes Thank you,
- 1:37:36as well as the crisp, gooey and stomach turning directional
- 1:37:40style of Brandon Cronenberg, Infinity Pool is a mind bending
- 1:37:44dive into the horror that comes with knowing oneself, one that
- 1:37:48leaves audiences wondering who they truly are and who they are
- 1:37:51capable of becoming. Given the right circumstances
- 1:37:54though, it could have delved more into the cloning aspect of
- 1:37:57the story. Thank you.
- 1:37:59One or two scenes that would have called into question who's
- 1:38:02the original and who's the copy would have been great.
- 1:38:05Or maybe an alternate third act where the zombies are set upon
- 1:38:08by a group of angry clones. Regardless, Infinity Pool is an
- 1:38:12existential, dread laden film that echoes the works of the
- 1:38:16Superfly elder Cronenberg and leaves the audience wondering
- 1:38:20what kind of dark Freudian instincts lie beneath the
- 1:38:23surface of who they consider themselves to be.
- 1:38:26Adolf, 10. And then he says, there it is.
- 1:38:28Sorry. I think that this really kind of
- 1:38:31highlights what's great about a movie like this is that people
- 1:38:34are going to have such wildly differing opinions.
- 1:38:36Even if they like the movie, they're going to have different
- 1:38:38interpretations and reasons. They like it, and if they don't
- 1:38:41like it, it might be for reasons that somebody else does like it.
- 1:38:45And I think, honestly, I think that's good art.
- 1:38:49If it makes people talk about it exactly, I agree.
- 1:38:52Yeah, it it it's creating good conversations here.
- 1:38:55So far, nobody's had a wrong take, yeah.
- 1:38:58Well, I mean, that's our whole thing, is that everybody has a
- 1:39:00wrong opinion about horror. I mean, I might disagree with it
- 1:39:02and jokingly say it's wrong, but ultimately you like what you
- 1:39:05like and it doesn't make you not a horror fan for not liking
- 1:39:07something. Yeah, OK, over the Twitter,
- 1:39:11First off we have chat says tied for my fave movie of the year.
- 1:39:15But never never expected the SLO Jack to be that threatening.
- 1:39:19Or OK, hold on, never expected the SLO Jack to be that
- 1:39:24threatening. Or for me, a goth's breast to
- 1:39:27birth whatever drug induced matter that they did.
- 1:39:32Also, where can I get my hands on some of those psychedelics?
- 1:39:36I don't want to take those psychedelics.
- 1:39:39If I see that type of shit coming out of nipples, I don't
- 1:39:43need to see nipples giving birth.
- 1:39:45I respect you, Chad. You know, like I I try to say to
- 1:39:49like. You really have sort of about
- 1:39:50these nipples? Yeah.
- 1:39:52No, no, no, I I just can't. No, no.
- 1:39:54But you know what? I respect you.
- 1:39:56Sound like conservatives after Janet Jackson and Justin
- 1:39:59Timberlake performed at the Super Bowl.
- 1:40:03I'm pro nipple. Throw a nipple absolutely.
- 1:40:06But once it starts to grow and like, give birth, that's
- 1:40:10whenever I draw the line and I back out there.
- 1:40:12Hey man, let nature be nature. OK, Next up Aquile Boobs.
- 1:40:18I like this is a unique type of review and I assume this is his
- 1:40:22reaction to like start of the movie all the way to the end of
- 1:40:26the movie and it's told through a story of 1234567891011 emojis.
- 1:40:32So it starts off, cry laughing, Next up laughing with a little
- 1:40:36sweat at the top. Next up cheese and smile.
- 1:40:39Next up just a little smile. Next up flat face just like
- 1:40:44mouth flat. Next up, crooked frown.
- 1:40:47Next up ooh Next up, Next up, pale.
- 1:40:54Next emoji, dizzy face. Next one dead.
- 1:40:59And then it just says what the fuck?
- 1:41:03You know what? If I read that review about a
- 1:41:05movie, I'd be like, color me intrigued.
- 1:41:08Yeah, honestly, that that could be the tagline too.
- 1:41:11Just put those emojis up there, in that order and then what the
- 1:41:15fuck? OK, Next up Kevy Calf.
- 1:41:19The question of who are we really is never answered.
- 1:41:22In some ways it infuriated me, but it also made me really
- 1:41:25respect them for not spoon feeding, leaving it open-ended,
- 1:41:28and leaving my brain scrambled. Just like the protagonist.
- 1:41:31Brilliant move for this specifically.
- 1:41:35I respect that because like, I want a resolution out of that,
- 1:41:39but I actually really respect them.
- 1:41:42Leaving it open-ended there. Yeah, well, it kind of gives you
- 1:41:45more of a like, cuz I mean, that's the thing too.
- 1:41:48I know, like, we could have explored the like, is he the
- 1:41:51real, the original James, or is he a double?
- 1:41:54Ultimately, we don't know. Ultimately, honestly, he doesn't
- 1:41:57know either. And he's just been through a lot
- 1:41:58and he doesn't even know who he is as a person.
- 1:42:00Without even taking in that existential point of like, am I
- 1:42:04the real me? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:42:06Yeah. And also just like, you know,
- 1:42:08delving into like the way it changes, I think that we're all
- 1:42:11saying the same thing with that. Yeah, we all wanted that.
- 1:42:13But we respect that it didn't go that way because it feels
- 1:42:16obvious. Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 1:42:18I'm like I said, I'm very happy that we got the movie we got
- 1:42:21instead of what it could have very easily been, the very
- 1:42:24predictable route, Mandy says. I had zero idea what this movie
- 1:42:29was going into it, which made it all more satisfying. 100% my
- 1:42:34experience with it. I didn't know anything other
- 1:42:37than like that shot of me. A goth.
- 1:42:38Like laughing with her jawfully unhinged in the trailer.
- 1:42:43That's all I knew. That's all I needed.
- 1:42:45And I this is 1 actually. Normally.
- 1:42:49I mean like the trailer didn't really give anything away for
- 1:42:52this. Like really it was perfect for
- 1:42:54this. Like I kind of got you in tree.
- 1:42:56Well, and it's like one of those, It's kind of like with
- 1:42:58Cabin in the Woods or Barbarian, where you see the trailer and
- 1:43:01you think the movie's going to be about one thing.
- 1:43:04Like you see the trailer and you're like, OK, clearly we're
- 1:43:06going to have issues with cloning.
- 1:43:08Yeah. And that ultimately just kind of
- 1:43:11is like. You know what sets off the
- 1:43:14events? But it's not like the main
- 1:43:15thing. Yeah, Which you know is what a
- 1:43:17trailer should be like. It's enough to like pique your
- 1:43:21curiosity. Yeah, and I fully support going
- 1:43:24into Movies Blind all the time, and this is a perfect movie to
- 1:43:26go in blind to. Yeah, I mean, you can watch the
- 1:43:28trailer, but going in blinds always gonna be better.
- 1:43:31Yeah. And finally, movies for days,
- 1:43:35says a creepy vibe. You swim in season with self
- 1:43:38destruction and dehumanization, complete with scrappy Do it
- 1:43:42yourself. sci-fi tech. A bit like the most dangerous
- 1:43:45game, but more dour and debaucherous.
- 1:43:48My fucking jam. Fuck yeah, yeah, I vibe with all
- 1:43:53that too, man. You know, it's a similar, I like
- 1:43:56that comparison to the Most Dangerous game because they are
- 1:44:00like just fucking with other humans for their own
- 1:44:02entertainment because they're rich and they can Exactly, yeah,
- 1:44:05it's a different way to tell the story and.
- 1:44:08I like that, Yeah. It also kind of gives them,
- 1:44:11like, you know, they do have to pay consequences, literally.
- 1:44:13Like, they're just paying for it.
- 1:44:14But like, it's crazy, man. All right, OK, that's the
- 1:44:19reviews. OK, so a lot more in life for
- 1:44:21this than, hey, I don't think anybody actually didn't like it
- 1:44:24other than the review that you pulled.
- 1:44:26Yeah, I think it just, I think it didn't get enough marketing
- 1:44:30with it like, yeah. We saw a couple of shots of like
- 1:44:35Mia Goth and Alexander Scarsgard being weird at the red carpet,
- 1:44:38which, by the way, SAG, AFTRA and the WGA are still on strike.
- 1:44:42They can't promote their works, you know, in ways such as that,
- 1:44:46yeah, showing pictures of the dog.
- 1:44:48Yeah, so please support. The people, the creative people
- 1:44:53that make movies like this happen.
- 1:44:55Yes, although I feel like this movie right here would have This
- 1:44:59is like a neon one, right? Yes, I feel like neon is very
- 1:45:01much like 824. They're probably like on
- 1:45:04probably. In terms of yeah, made, made
- 1:45:06good things happen, yeah, yeah. But I'd be interested in looking
- 1:45:10that up. I know some studios have been
- 1:45:11like, yeah, you know, it is reasonable that you wanna be
- 1:45:13paid. Neon just seems like another
- 1:45:15version of a 24, basically. Like, yeah, we make weird shit
- 1:45:18to you guys. Like, well, yeah, we're the dog.
- 1:45:20Here, we're gonna be watching another neon movie here shortly.
- 1:45:24And here it goes. West's neon fib is it?
- 1:45:26Yeah. Ash Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:27Yeah, yeah, it's fall time. That means it's time for one of
- 1:45:31my favorite I it's it's not a fall movie, but I associate it
- 1:45:35with fall because we watched it in the fall the first time and
- 1:45:37came out in the fall. Yeah, it's my fall movie now.
- 1:45:40That's fair. But yeah.
- 1:45:43So Nope, it's parking. So I guess that means it's time
- 1:45:46for us to go. Ah, well, first next week.
- 1:45:49Yes. Kiss me fat boy.
- 1:45:52Yeah, yeah, we're talking the IT miniseries.
- 1:45:56We're gonna try and tackle 3 hours of content.
- 1:45:58We've done it before. We can do it again, yeah.
- 1:46:00We do it with Mitsun. Yeah, and we're talking the 1990
- 1:46:05miniseries it with Tim Curry, it actually.
- 1:46:10Amazingly, just came to streaming this month.
- 1:46:14Yeah, what was it all? Was it on TV?
- 1:46:16Yeah. So it's free for people who want
- 1:46:18to watch. It it's free on TV, you can rent
- 1:46:20it for $4 from Prime, which again, you're hitting three
- 1:46:23hours worth of content for that. It's worth it.
- 1:46:25You can buy it for like 6 bucks on Amazon right now.
- 1:46:29You could probably walk into Walmart and find it in the $5
- 1:46:31bin because that's where our copy came from.
- 1:46:33Absolutely, Yeah. So you could do.
- 1:46:34That it's. Amazing.
- 1:46:37You get Tim Curry and John Ritter.
- 1:46:40I don't know if does anything else need to be said to convince
- 1:46:44you to watch it. One more thing, Seth Green.
- 1:46:47Oh shit. Yeah, he's Richie.
- 1:46:50He did it. Yeah.
- 1:46:52OK. Yeah.
- 1:46:53Yep, Yep. So it's a good little cast, good
- 1:46:55little movie. So we're going to be talking
- 1:46:58about that. So watch it and.
- 1:46:59I'm you guys don't even understand because for a long
- 1:47:02time Travis Lee, I don't give a shit about the 1990 it.
- 1:47:05And then he was like, you know what?
- 1:47:06I want to talk about this. I want to talk about 1998 I
- 1:47:08never said I didn't care about. It back in the day, several
- 1:47:12years ago, you're like, I don't think it's that scary.
- 1:47:14No, I've always liked it. No, you didn't, dude.
- 1:47:17I had a copy of it growing up. I remember us talking about
- 1:47:21this. I have watched this with like
- 1:47:23friends all the time. We showed it to, like, Chelsea's
- 1:47:26friend. One time I scared the shit of
- 1:47:27her because she was scared. Clowns.
- 1:47:30No, I've always been terrified of this movie.
- 1:47:32I remember like, when we were watching it, we weren't supposed
- 1:47:34to and one of us, like, walked themselves in the bathroom
- 1:47:39because they were so scared of it, like we were children.
- 1:47:42When we watched it, it made a very early impression on us.
- 1:47:45I'm talking to Stephen King in general.
- 1:47:48Like his adaptations are things that I am not like always big
- 1:47:51on. But no, I've always been a fan
- 1:47:54of the 1998. I know it's cheesy and it's not
- 1:47:57like maybe that's a hold up. I don't know.
- 1:48:00It's been a long time since I've watched it.
- 1:48:01I think it's great. I like, I definitely think it
- 1:48:04benefited from having like a reboot with modern effects
- 1:48:09technology. But I love the 1990 version.
- 1:48:14Yeah, I love it. I'm so excited to talk about it
- 1:48:16and I think they both have like a place, yeah.
- 1:48:20Yeah, Well, Okay, we got a lot of time to talk about that next
- 1:48:24week. Just whatever you wanna do, you
- 1:48:30should watch it. So watch it or not.
- 1:48:27Listen to us talk about it next. It's free right now.
- 1:48:31Okay. So in the meantime, you can find
- 1:48:34us on social media, we're on Facebook at What's Your Least
