- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26This morning scripture comes from Ephesians chapter 4 verses
- 0:3017 through 32. So I tell you this and insist on
- 0:37on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles
- 0:41do in the futility of their thinking.
- 0:44They are darkened in their misunder, in their
- 0:46understanding, and separated from the life of God because of
- 0:50the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their
- 0:53hearts. Having lost all sensitivity,
- 0:56they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge
- 1:00in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
- 1:04That, however, is not the way of life.
- 1:06You learned when you heard about Christ and and were taught in
- 1:11Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
- 1:16You were taught with regard to your former way of life, to put
- 1:19off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful
- 1:23desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to
- 1:27put on the new self created to be like God in true
- 1:31righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put
- 1:35off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for
- 1:38we are all members of 1 body. In your anger, do not sin, do
- 1:44not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not
- 1:47give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing
- 1:52must steal no longer, but must work doing something useful with
- 1:56their own hands that they may have something to share with
- 1:59those in need. Do not let any unwholesome talk
- 2:03come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building
- 2:07others up accordance to their needs according to their needs.
- 2:11Sorry that it may benefit those who listen and do not grieve the
- 2:16Holy Spirit of God with whom you were sealed for the day of
- 2:20redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage
- 2:24and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
- 2:29Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other
- 2:33just as in Christ God forgave you.
- 2:38This is the Word of God for the people of God.
- 2:40Thanks be to God. Good morning everyone, I like to
- 2:50consider US1 big happy family. Can't laugh at that.
- 2:56Please don't laugh at that. With my own family and
- 3:02especially with my in laws and my nieces and nephews, I'm known
- 3:05as the Funkel the fun uncle. But this morning I will probably
- 3:12be that uncle that at holiday dinners brings up both religion
- 3:16and politics. And I hope that afterwards you
- 3:20would still love me and invite me to those family dinners.
- 3:27You know, I'm sure on your minds this could go many a ways.
- 3:31Very few of those ways you may think are good.
- 3:34But I wanted to focus in on what God had prepared for us this
- 3:42morning. I heard even Pastor Rolando just
- 3:45a couple weeks ago preach about how all nations will bow to the
- 3:49Lord and that even when God had his people, the Israelites,
- 3:54Abraham was blessed to bless the other nations.
- 3:58And so after this morning, you may have other questions or
- 4:01things that you feel like could be discussed in regards to our
- 4:05faith and politics. And you are welcome to e-mail
- 4:08myself or Pastor Scott and we'll try and cover as much as we can
- 4:11on the podcast. But I didn't want to add things
- 4:14just for the sake of talking about them because I do not want
- 4:19to be up here as Jeremy this morning.
- 4:24Praise be to God on that one. But if we are going to discuss
- 4:29politics in a series about denying ourselves, we first need
- 4:35to be honest about ourselves and to know ourselves a little bit
- 4:39better. And so I'm going to set a
- 4:42foundation for us this morning, and I want you to be hyper aware
- 4:47of your feelings and reactions as I start us off the words I
- 4:55have to say. The Democratic Party, top to
- 4:59bottom Congress, House Representatives, presidential
- 5:03candidates are incapable, incompetent and unqualified.
- 5:10Now, this may be that's what I was anticipating.
- 5:15Just wait, Tina. The Republican Party, top to
- 5:21bottom Congress, House of Representatives, presidential
- 5:24candidates equally incapable, incompetent and unqualified.
- 5:36We need laughter this morning, everybody.
- 5:40And that is not that there aren't good people in both
- 5:45parties with good intentions. Doesn't mean that there aren't
- 5:49bad people with bad intentions. Or maybe started off with good
- 5:54and then power got a hold of them.
- 5:56Doesn't mean that we don't have Christian brothers and sisters
- 6:01in both parties. But if your expectation is for
- 6:07them to save us from all our problems, they are incapable,
- 6:12incompetent and unqualified. If you have put your hope in a
- 6:18party or a specific leader of the party to save us, you have
- 6:22made an idol and will be let down if you think they can.
- 6:28You may have forgotten why we even vote in the first place.
- 6:34We understand democracy, not sovereignty.
- 6:40We elect our leaders. Democracy has been good for
- 6:43people because it seems to cause the least damage, not because it
- 6:47necessarily yields the best results.
- 6:51Fallen humans have done a lot of damage in history when given
- 6:56sovereign power, but God is neither fallen nor human.
- 7:03Thank goodness we can thank God's sovereign rule for
- 7:07bringing us life and every blessing that flows from it.
- 7:11God allows us the freedom to love Him or not.
- 7:17He gives us the freedom to love one another or not.
- 7:21And that seems to be where we mess up us.
- 7:26We are the problem. We have used our freedom to
- 7:30cause massive harm through our clumsy trial and error of human
- 7:35history. Most nations have learned to
- 7:37take sovereign rule out of human hands because it has been too
- 7:41dangerous. Democracy is a concession to
- 7:46human weakness. The only place sovereignty can
- 7:49be trusted is in the hands of God, and God generously used it
- 7:54to make a way for all of us. Had God put that to a vote, we
- 8:00would have probably messed that up.
- 8:04God is the undisputed ruler of the universe, and as it turns
- 8:08out, he is benevolent, loving, patient, merciful, and just.
- 8:16What a relief. the United States government cannot save people
- 8:23and the Church cannot even save people.
- 8:28Salvation is found and no one else, for there is no other name
- 8:33under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.
- 8:39That name is Jesus Christ. Now that Christ is the
- 8:43cornerstone, we can pray and get started.
- 8:49Lord, we long for Your promises of heaven, where there is no
- 8:58more crying, no more pain, no more death.
- 9:03You have called us to bring heaven down to earth.
- 9:07Lord, would we remember that there is no more crying when we
- 9:12walk with You and receive peace beyond understanding.
- 9:16There is no more pain when You heal us inside and out.
- 9:21No more death because Your Son conquered death on the cross and
- 9:26offered us life. Would we be Your vessels in this
- 9:30world, knowing that what we strive in bringing heaven down
- 9:35to earth is only completed in you?
- 9:38Would your spirit of wisdom and truth guide this time, not I?
- 9:44Amen. For those of you that don't
- 9:49know, our college students have been going to the Passion
- 9:54Conference for the past few years, which is a conference for
- 10:00college kids to go worship. We have between 40 and 55,000
- 10:05college kids come together and worship and it's usually in
- 10:08Atlanta but sometimes in Dallas. And we have a tradition, an
- 10:14unintentional tradition, but one of our traditions is to use
- 10:18Airbnb for our housing. For those that do not know, you
- 10:24may be familiar with AB and BA Bed and Breakfast, right?
- 10:27An Airbnb is an Internet platform so you can stay at
- 10:30people's houses. We like it, it's cheaper, we can
- 10:34all be together. And the unintended tradition is
- 10:39how something always goes wrong every single year.
- 10:45The first year, I believe it was the first year we are an hour
- 10:48outside of Atlanta, an hour before we arrive and we get a
- 10:52phone call that our Airbnb had been broken into, things had
- 10:57been stolen, and it was no longer safe for us to stay in
- 11:01that Airbnb. And so we had to seek another
- 11:05location that looked good but was crumbling apart at the
- 11:08foundation and a mess outside. And that's just kind of how it
- 11:12goes. Other times they get cancelled
- 11:14on us for other various reasons or we arrive and it's not quite
- 11:18as advertised. Now I've been using Airbnb since
- 11:23it started because I was a foolish young man that was broke
- 11:28and just wanted to travel and so I would stay on people's couches
- 11:32for $11.00. You can't do that on Airbnb
- 11:35anymore, but you know, do that where they'd have a tent set up
- 11:38in their backyard and charge me 15 bucks.
- 11:41And you learn to have healthy expectations for the Airbnb that
- 11:48you are going to. We have had the various issues
- 11:53on our different trips and now it's come to a point where we
- 11:57kind of expect them as we go down.
- 11:59And the Lord has provided 1:00 every single year.
- 12:05But things can be small to big in regards to how things at the
- 12:10Airbnb are compared to their advertisement.
- 12:14I think this year we had like a dirty pillowcase and there's
- 12:18always like a property manager that you can stay in contact
- 12:20with and try and get help with. Sometimes they don't have enough
- 12:23bedding for the beds. It can increase to not having
- 12:30enough breakfast, right? B&B, half of that is breakfast
- 12:33and four granola bars is not enough for 10 college kids over
- 12:373 mornings. I don't know what they were
- 12:41thinking, but if things were to escalate, it would be worse if
- 12:46there was no mattress right the first B in BNB or that the air
- 12:51conditioning was not working in the heat of Dallas.
- 12:56We we find ourselves when we get together trying to navigate this
- 13:01as a team with the college kids and usually they're very good
- 13:05about everything. Very rarely do we have any big
- 13:08issues or disagreements about the Airbnb when we are together,
- 13:14but I was as I was preparing for this.
- 13:16God provided me this image and I will let you decide what is what
- 13:22has actually happened to us at our Airbnb's moving forward or
- 13:26not, and see if you can catch maybe some of the differences.
- 13:31It would be really interesting if my friend Alden, upon arrival
- 13:35to his room, said I can't sleep if it's not painted blue, right?
- 13:42So if you could call up the manager and let them know they
- 13:45need to repaint this room before we go to sleep tonight, I would
- 13:48really appreciate that. And then we have Elizabeth
- 13:51Boswell. I only sleep on medium firm
- 13:54mattresses, not medium mattresses, right, With a memory
- 13:59foam pillow. We have certain expectations,
- 14:04and sometimes there's a difference between an issue and
- 14:06a preference. And some of those things like
- 14:10the granola bars, we can go to Walmart and we can refill.
- 14:14I don't expect the manager to actually show up and provide
- 14:18that. Now, if Elizabeth is unsatisfied
- 14:20with the mattress, who would waste the breath in calling the
- 14:24manager to say we need a new medium firm mattress?
- 14:28Nobody, right? But if there's no mattress at
- 14:31all, I would at least go out to Walmart, get an air mattress,
- 14:34maybe even offer to sleep on it myself so that we have the
- 14:40basics that are needed as we get through our trip to passion can
- 14:47need more water. How do I navigate these issues
- 14:58when all of us in the Airbnb are equally invested right?
- 15:02We all pay the same amount to stay here.
- 15:12How have we navigated things within our political climate as
- 15:17of recent? Maybe we've spoken poorly
- 15:20towards others that we know or have never even met over
- 15:25political issues. There's a big difference between
- 15:28speaking poorly of the injustices done by someone and
- 15:34how we speak towards them. It's easy to put a face to our
- 15:39problems, but we need to be reminded, Scripture tells us.
- 15:45For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but
- 15:49against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world,
- 15:54against mighty powers in this Dark World, and against evil
- 15:57spirits in the heavenly places. If Alden and I were to get into
- 16:03a fistfight because he wanted a room painted blue, that might be
- 16:07a little over the top. Now words over him not having a
- 16:11mattress at all, Maybe that's more of a reasonable
- 16:14conversation, but I would be in agreement with him that he
- 16:17should have a place to sleep. It's not our fault.
- 16:22Sometimes we feel like when we can't hold back our tongue
- 16:25right, we may just chop up scripture and just use the
- 16:29beginning of James 38 where it says but no human being
- 16:34contained the tongue. Now if we continue on it is a
- 16:38restless evil full of deadly poison.
- 16:41With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we
- 16:45curse human beings who have been made in God's likeness.
- 16:50Out of the same mouth. Come praise and cursing.
- 16:53My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
- 16:56Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
- 17:02Now Pastor, this is cute and all, but all my political
- 17:05beliefs are based off of scripture.
- 17:08It's not my wisdom but God's. Farther down in James chapter 3
- 17:13it says in verse 313, if you are wise and understand God's ways,
- 17:19prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the
- 17:24humility that comes with wisdom. It does not say if you are wise
- 17:32and understand God's ways, prove it by quoting more scripture
- 17:35than the opposition, humbling them before your knowledge of
- 17:39God's word. Though we wish it would.
- 17:45This tactic is used inside and outside of the church.
- 17:50I was called by a friend about a month ago because whenever
- 17:54there's political arguments and Jesus gets mentioned, some
- 17:58people like to call their friendly neighborhood pastor and
- 18:01try and get him to back them up. And so he called complaining
- 18:05about his father, who's a confessed professed Catholic,
- 18:09and said he eats with Nazis. Jesus wouldn't eat with Nazis,
- 18:16right? I was like, I don't know how to
- 18:21tell you that Jesus would definitely eat with Nazis.
- 18:25They're not going to have the influence over him.
- 18:27He's influencing them, right? He meets with the sinners, but
- 18:32for in our time and age, when we think of the Pharisees and
- 18:35Sadducees, how could he possibly meet with those sinners?
- 18:39He came down for the sick, not for the well.
- 18:45And so I had to break it to him. And, and we see from time to
- 18:49time that people inside the faith, outside of the faith,
- 18:52want to use scripture to push our point, even if we don't
- 18:56believe in the scriptures ourselves.
- 18:59One of one of these fun examples that came to mind this week was
- 19:03that if we want to use scripture to form all of the things we
- 19:08could debate. I'm trying to find a bipartisan
- 19:12issue here. So if you disagree with me
- 19:13again, we can talk afterwards. If we're called to bring heaven
- 19:18down to earth, and heaven is described as having gold streets
- 19:22as the Main St. in heaven, should we not put our money
- 19:27towards having gold main streets in every town of our nation if
- 19:31we want it to be more like heaven, right?
- 19:35See how we can quickly use and grab what we like to push the
- 19:38point across that we would prefer.
- 19:42If we are not humbled by the wisdom God has provided, you do
- 19:47not understand it. If God has agreed with every
- 19:51political opinion you have, it isn't the God of the Bible.
- 19:58If you are humbled by the wisdom of God, that means that
- 20:01sometimes we see something in scripture we do not like or
- 20:05understand how it is best for our world, and we trust it.
- 20:10Above our own understanding, I want us to sit and think of the
- 20:15last time we've read a scripture that went against our desires
- 20:20for the world and we didn't try to twist the interpretation to
- 20:24make it go our way, and we submitted to the wisdom of God.
- 20:41Many of us may be upset at the idea of a Pride month in June,
- 20:48yet we find ourselves celebrating it year round.
- 20:55I voted correctly. I have the correct answer to
- 20:59each issue if you give me enough context because I am morally
- 21:03righteous. Should we not let down our pride
- 21:09and submit to the wisdom of God, not seeking to be right in an
- 21:14argument, but seeking to walk in the truth?
- 21:19James continues in verse 17. But the wisdom from above is
- 21:24first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle
- 21:28at all times, and willing to yield to others.
- 21:33It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds.
- 21:36It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
- 21:41And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and
- 21:45reap the harvest of righteousness.
- 21:51And I'm not ignorant to how we may be feeling in this room.
- 21:57You may sense yourself trying to figure out each and every
- 22:00metaphor connection while I was talking about the Airbnb's.
- 22:05Trying to figure out which side of the political aisle I might
- 22:08subvertently be pushing. Hoping for one of two things.
- 22:14That I was secretly pushing the agenda of your party and you
- 22:17could rest assured knowing you were on the right side.
- 22:22Or if you could find that I was secretly pushing the other
- 22:25party, then you don't have to listen to whatever follows and
- 22:29can turn off your hearing, or more conveniently, your hearing
- 22:33aids if that applies to you. Parties can change, opinions can
- 22:39change, but the truth of the scripture I read has not.
- 22:43So I'm going to reread James 317 through 18.
- 22:48But the wisdom from above is, first of all, pure.
- 22:52It is also peace, loving, gentle at all times, and willing to
- 22:57yield to others. It is full of mercy and the
- 23:01fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is
- 23:05always sincere. And those who are peacemakers
- 23:10will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
- 23:16But the wisdom from above is, first of all, pure.
- 23:22Do we love peace or do we like a little drama?
- 23:29Not too much though, just enough to keep things interesting.
- 23:34Are we gentle at all times or only gentle with those who agree
- 23:39with us? Are we willing to yield to
- 23:44others? The question isn't even that we
- 23:47must yield to others. Wisdom is that we are willing to
- 23:53yield to others. One of the hardest things about
- 23:57following the Lord and these political climates with tensions
- 24:02so high, is that people are losing relationships with
- 24:06friends and family members over their political differences.
- 24:10Once you've picked a side, it's hard to even submit to God's
- 24:14wisdom on one particular issue because it could mean that
- 24:18people within a political party will be upset and disappointed
- 24:22that you don't fully agree with the party's agenda.
- 24:26Who will we pick as our priority, our friends of the
- 24:30world or the Lord? In James chapter 4 it says,
- 24:37excuse me, starting in verse 4. Therefore, if anyone chooses to
- 24:42be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
- 24:47Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously
- 24:51longs for the Spirit he has caused to dwell within us, but
- 24:55He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says God
- 24:59opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.
- 25:05Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and He will
- 25:09flee from you. Come near to God and He will
- 25:13come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners,
- 25:17and purify your hearts, you double minded.
- 25:21Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning
- 25:26and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the
- 25:31Lord and He will lift you up. Now, Pastor, you've gotten a
- 25:36little off course. And we were much more invested
- 25:39in that Airbnb story. My apologies.
- 25:48One of the issues we had with Airbnb was that it got cancelled
- 25:53on us once again couple weeks out.
- 25:56This was a couple years ago and the property manager called me
- 26:00on my cell phone and he's like, I'm the property manager for
- 26:05your Airbnb at the end of the month.
- 26:07And I was like, OK, what's wrong and how can we fix it?
- 26:10And he was caught off guard. And I was like, I know, I know
- 26:14something was going to go wrong. It's OK.
- 26:16Just tell me what the plan is moving forward.
- 26:19And he was so taken aback that I didn't curse him out that he
- 26:25ended up sharing his whole life story.
- 26:28I, I forget the exact night, but I ended up being in the car on
- 26:31the phone with him for like 40 minutes as he shared his whole
- 26:35history of growing up in the church.
- 26:36And then stepping away from the church, feeling like God's
- 26:39calling him back into it. And how whenever he's hosting
- 26:42people that go to the Passion Conference, they are holy and
- 26:47set apart from those of the world.
- 26:50And so my, my willingness to yield, I wasn't saying, OK, I'll
- 26:55go find another one. Like, no, you're going to fix
- 26:57this. And I'm going to try my best to
- 27:02extend the love and grace of our Lord in the process of it.
- 27:07I believe you can be discontent with how things are run.
- 27:11Continue to seek correction without anger and hatred
- 27:15stirring in your heart. We will never be fully content
- 27:21with an Airbnb or with our country.
- 27:25It will never have all of our preferences and it would be
- 27:29silly to put so much weight and tie so much importance to a
- 27:35place that is temporary, just like an Airbnb, to change the
- 27:42bedding softness and paint colour and all of these things
- 27:46for a place we're going to stay in for three nights when it is
- 27:50not our home. And I'm always excited to go
- 27:54home after Passion. I'm getting very old.
- 27:59I take my own pillows. I take a little bit of home.
- 28:02Right. You're seeing the connection to
- 28:05the Airbnb. But it's always worth it to go
- 28:10to Passion because there is a reason why we go to Passion.
- 28:15The heartbeat verse of the Passion Conference ever since
- 28:18its inception almost 30 years ago is Isaiah 26.
- 28:23Eight. Yes, Lord, walking in the way of
- 28:27your laws, we wait for you. Your name and renown are the
- 28:32desire of our hearts. Reminds me of Paul when he says
- 28:37to live is Christ and to die is gain.
- 28:42We're called to be Christ in this lifetime.
- 28:44That we would walk in his ways and we would not seek the
- 28:49lifting of our name and renowned, but that the desire of
- 28:54our hearts would be for his name and renowned.
- 28:59And as we wait for the Lord, I'm going to save that for the
- 29:08podcast Discernment, Discernment.
- 29:13It may not be everyone's heart right outside of the church
- 29:17especially, but also inside of the church to put His ways
- 29:21before our own. But as believers, it should be
- 29:25even if we are in exile from the land that has promised us, just
- 29:29like the Israelites, we still have a responsibility in the
- 29:33exile. And I will leave you with this
- 29:37message from God to the Israelites while they were in
- 29:40exile from Jeremiah 29 that I believe still is important for
- 29:49us today. This is what the Lord of
- 29:53Heaven's armies, the God of Israel, says to all the captives
- 29:57he has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem.
- 30:02Build homes and plan to stay. Plant gardens and eat the food
- 30:07they produce. Marry and have children, then
- 30:11find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren.
- 30:15Multiply, do not dwindle away, and work for the peace and
- 30:21prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile.
- 30:25Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your
- 30:29welfare. This is what the Lord of
- 30:32Heaven's armies, the God of Israel, says.
- 30:37Do not let your prophets and fortune tellers who are with you
- 30:40in the land of Babylon trick you.
- 30:42Do not listen to their dreams because they are telling you
- 30:46lies in my name. I have not sent them, says the
- 30:50Lord. This is what the Lord says.
- 30:54You will be in Babylon for 70 years, but then I will come and
- 30:58do for all the good things I have promised you, and I will
- 31:01bring you home again, for I know the plans I have for you, says
- 31:07the Lord. They are plans for good and not
- 31:10for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
- 31:15In those days. When you pray, I will listen.
- 31:20If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find
- 31:23me. I will be found by you, says the
- 31:27Lord. I will end your captivity and
- 31:30restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the
- 31:33nations where I sent you and bring you home again to your own
- 31:38land. We have a lot of dreams and
- 31:43fortunes and things sold as the end all be all.
- 31:50It's not of God. Would we be good stewards of the
- 31:55time and the place that He has entrusted us with and the work
- 32:00that He is doing in the world until He comes back again?
- 32:05Let us pray. Lord, would Your Spirit guide us
- 32:13as we are in exile until You call us home?
- 32:17Lord, we know that You desire for us to bring heaven to earth.
- 32:26Would You show us what that looks like, not only our
- 32:31participation in our democratic system, but how we can bring
- 32:37heaven to earth to our neighbors, to our loved ones, to
- 32:42our community, knowing that it can only be completed in you.
- 32:50We thank you and praise you for this time together in your
- 32:54house. Would we be 1 body submitted
- 33:00before you for your name and your renown.
- 33:06We ask this all in the Holy name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
