Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Taba K Rambles where a couple of
- 0:22friends review Korean dramas and we are back with another 2021
- 0:26drama. I didn't realize this I was
- 0:28going to have three reviews in a row from 2021, but here we are.
- 0:32I have a couple of friends with me.
- 0:34Today I am joined by Becky from Don't Sue Rebecca on TikTok
- 0:39slash drama Detours podcast. How are you, Becky?
- 0:42I'm doing well. How are you?
- 0:44I am doing well. Thank you for being here.
- 0:46And we are joined by Liliana from the Tea in Soju podcast.
- 0:51How are you, Liliana? I'm doing well.
- 0:54Thank you. So excited to record this one
- 0:56with you guys. I know we're going to be talking
- 0:58about our beloved summer, which we have managed to rewatch and
- 1:04and get in our system in the summer time, which was really
- 1:08nice, really sweet. What have you guys been watching
- 1:12lately? Besides you know our beloved
- 1:14summer on and off? Well, I finished up The Prisoner
- 1:18of Beauty, loved it. I called it.
- 1:21It's going to be one of my top dramas for 2025.
- 1:25Like I I will say it right now. I also right before we sat down
- 1:31to record, I finished up Feud which is the Bai Lu Xianchi.
- 1:36Dramas that not so good. No.
- 1:40No, no, I wouldn't like. Oh no, no, Becky, it's not your
- 1:44thing, but Shancher and historicals aren't your thing
- 1:47anyways. I think if people just go in and
- 1:50think this is going to be like your straight up romance story,
- 1:54that's not what it's about. Think about the name.
- 1:57It's called Feud for a reason. There's a lot of
- 2:00misunderstanding, but it's actually done fairly well.
- 2:04And once everything kind of comes together, I, I feel like
- 2:08this is one of those where the second-half, they're stronger
- 2:11than the first. Half.
- 2:13People don't like that. No, they don't.
- 2:15They don't. I liked it.
- 2:18Is it going to be a top drama for me?
- 2:20Absolutely not. But I still think it was an OK
- 2:24kind of drama. And then I think I'm just
- 2:26watching Our Unwritten Soul, which is the K drama with Pat
- 2:31Boy Young. And yeah, I think I'll say
- 2:34those. I've got a few more, but I think
- 2:36those are the three. Well, now that two of them are
- 2:39finished, I'll have to start looking for some new stuff to
- 2:43sort of fill the gap, which we'll have because we'll have a
- 2:47dream within a dream starting. And I'm like, I'm ready for the
- 2:50Yinning. I'm ready for the.
- 2:52Yinning, it's his year, it's his year.
- 2:55It's loaded. Oh, and I'm so glad he's having
- 2:57it because he absolutely deserves it.
- 3:01Becky, what do you, what do you got going on so.
- 3:03Liliana influenced me to start The Prisoner of Beauty and Kid
- 3:09you not destroyed my sleep schedule.
- 3:11But I'm not mad. I just like I have to figure
- 3:16that out because the first night I started watching that drama, I
- 3:20think I stayed up till 3:00 in the morning, had watched 8
- 3:24episodes straight and then I had work the next day.
- 3:28It was a Sunday and I was like, why did I do this to myself?
- 3:34But I love it. I adore it.
- 3:36But I definitely it's not my normal genre and I'm having a
- 3:40really, really fun time with it. The other one I'm watching is
- 3:44Our Unwritten Soul and I love that one too.
- 3:47It's so good. It's almost ending soon, but
- 3:50just a very like healing drama. And then I was talking before.
- 3:54It's not really a drama, but I need everybody.
- 3:58You don't understand. I will vouch for this movie K
- 4:02Pop demon hunters was so good. It was so good to a point it
- 4:06exceeded my expectations. But also like just the the
- 4:10writing, the style, like it just had the perfect amount of like
- 4:13if you watch K dramas and like them, you'll love this because
- 4:16they just have they can I say a small it's not even a spoiler,
- 4:21but it's just to get the people to watch it.
- 4:23They even put the business proposal song in the movie.
- 4:29So Easter eggs doing like a. Slow MO song.
- 4:32Well, yeah, because the male lead a business proposal is the
- 4:36voice actor for the guy in the movie.
- 4:39So it's really good and I just need more people to watch it.
- 4:43So that's my little promo. You guys should watch it.
- 4:46So we got really good plugs for Prisoner of Beauty and K Pop
- 4:51Demon Hunters, which is a kids movie on Netflix, not a kids
- 4:56movie. Netflix has categorized it as
- 4:59kids. Listen, I don't even care if you
- 5:02like pneumonia or like Into the Spider verse, it's very well
- 5:07done so. Yeah nothing, nothing is not
- 5:10well done. Just saying y'all are strung out
- 5:13over a kids movie. OK, Anyway, so we are going to
- 5:16talk about Our Beloved Summer, which is a very nice, chill
- 5:21slice of life show. And I wanted to cover it because
- 5:26towards the beginning of the year when I was developing the
- 5:29lineup for season 6 of Tibock, I was like, damn, I really feel
- 5:32like we're watching our Beloved summer for some odd reason.
- 5:36I was like, oh, I'll just make it so that I watch it in the
- 5:39summertime even though this was released in the winter time.
- 5:42And I still feel like it was a good decision.
- 5:44So we're going to get into it though.
- 5:47But before we do, if this is your first time listening, go

- 6:33Thank you for being patients and supporting the show.
- 6:36All right, without further ado, we're going to do non spoiler
- 6:39and spoiler section for our beloved summer.
- 6:42Starting off with the My Drama List synopsis, which reads years
- 6:46after filming A viral documentary in high school.
- 6:48Two bickering ex lovers get pulled back in front of the
- 6:51camera and into each other's lives.
- 6:54Chei Wung seems naive and a free spirited man, but he wants to
- 6:58have something for the first time in his life.
- 7:00For that, he shows what he holds in his mind.
- 7:03Kukung SU aimed to become the top student at her school, but
- 7:06she is now an adult who lives fiercely, adapting to her
- 7:09reality. I don't even know what those
- 7:11like sentences are. They're basically just like
- 7:15working adults. He's a professional artist and
- 7:18they get pulled back in to do a documentary again, a follow up
- 7:22doc. The show is inspired by the
- 7:25webtoon Our Beloved Summer, which is by E Na in and Hong
- 7:31Kong Chao, which is a prequel story that depicts their high
- 7:34school days 10 years before the dramas timeline.
- 7:37It says here it's a different perspective from their past,
- 7:40including how they first met, grew in each other and fell in
- 7:42love with each other. The webtoon has a story that
- 7:44doesn't show up in a drama sequel.
- 7:47Again, I don't know what that storyline is or what what that
- 7:51characterization might be looking like that's different in
- 7:54the webtoon. Our Beloved Summer aired from
- 7:57December 2021 to January 2022 and it is 16 episodes long,
- 8:03directed by Kim Yun Din who also directed Tell Me That You Love
- 8:07Me and That is it. That is all that the direct.
- 8:11Really. Yes.
- 8:13I didn't know that is. Shocking.
- 8:15Yeah. That is shocking to me.
- 8:18Beautiful. I know I was like, whoa, the
- 8:22writer Inan and she has written Mellow movie and that's it.
- 8:28Like those are the only two things that this screenwriter
- 8:31has written. Is our beloved Summer and Mellow
- 8:34movie also starring Che Wu Sheik?
- 8:36Have you guys seen Mellow movie? I know that me and Liliana have
- 8:40seen a portion. I didn't want to cry.
- 8:46OK, OK. But also I was seeing a lot of
- 8:49mixed reviews. Like, I remember like saying,
- 8:52oh, I want to check this out. And like one of my friends wrote
- 8:55a paragraph and was like, listen, I really liked it.
- 8:57But honestly, it was, you know, and they just were telling me I
- 9:00wouldn't like it. And I was like, OK, I won't
- 9:03watch it. Did you guys like finish?
- 9:05It so I'm about halfway through it.
- 9:07And then So what happened was we were going to watch and review
- 9:11it for Liliana's podcast. Yeah, Tien sold you.
- 9:16And I think you came to me like a week before we were going to
- 9:20do the review, Liliana. And you were like, hey, how's it
- 9:24going? What's your watch looking like?
- 9:25And I was like, oh, I'm like in episode 4 out of 10, you know,
- 9:29basically halfway why? And she goes, yeah, I'm not
- 9:32feeling this like, we need to switch here.
- 9:34And I was like, OK. We need to do something else.
- 9:37We need to do something else. So it was initially going to be
- 9:40fully, you know, watched. And I probably will go back to
- 9:43it. I still have notes on it.
- 9:45But yeah, I can totally see how this was written by the same
- 9:51screenwriter. Yeah, there's definitely stuff.
- 9:54I still have notes on it, so I intend to like go back and I
- 10:01have really good notes on it. So do I.
- 10:03I don't know, maybe, maybe we'll do a mellow movie, you know,
- 10:08review at some point. But anyway, same screenwriter,
- 10:10you know, and our beloved summer stars Taylor Chic.
- 10:14As I said, he plays Cheung and he has been it doesn't seem like
- 10:18it, but he's been in quite a bit. 17 TV shows, 15 movies
- 10:22movies like Secretly Greatly Trained to Pusan from 2016,
- 10:26which there is a full deep dive review on the tip out feed if
- 10:30you want to scroll back because I covered that during spooky
- 10:32season last year. He's been an Okja, the Princess
- 10:35and the matchmaker. The witch part won the
- 10:38Subversion from 2018, which I really really enjoyed.
- 10:43I still need to go back and watch part.
- 10:44I freaking love that movie. And that is where he first
- 10:47worked with King Dami, his Co star in Our Beloved Summer.
- 10:51So this is a reunion for them. Chewishik has also been in
- 10:56Parasite, the Oscar winning Parasite.
- 10:58He's been in Divine Fury, Time to Hunt, Wonderland and then for
- 11:01television. I really remember him from
- 11:04Rooftop Prince from 2012 and then most recently he's been in
- 11:08A Killer Paradox from 2024 which there is a review upon the tea
- 11:14and soju feed. Is that a drama trio one?
- 11:19I can't remember but. It is.
- 11:21It is a drama. Trio, yes.
- 11:23So we watched that one. We were not 100 on that one.
- 11:27And then Mellow movie, obviously, like we just said, he
- 11:30stars in that one as well. It seems like he's got another
- 11:33drama that's going to drop this year in 2025 called Would You
- 11:36Marry Me? Fingers crossed.
- 11:38That's good. It sounds like a romance.
- 11:40I don't know. Yeah.
- 11:43Do you guys like Chowashi? How do you feel about him?
- 11:46I love him, I think he is so talented and I've been wanting
- 11:50to check out his most recent projects, but every time I just
- 11:54people are like, I don't think it's for you and I'm like, you
- 11:57know what, good to know. And I just don't watch him.
- 12:00It's like killer Paradox. I remember I like had on my
- 12:03list. I was so excited and then it
- 12:05came out and you know. You're not going to like it.
- 12:07I'll tell you right now, you're not going to.
- 12:08Like it, I know well, that's the thing people binge watch it and
- 12:11then they just talk about the full thing like no spoiler
- 12:15warnings, no nothing. And I just saw like something
- 12:17about it and I said, oh, this isn't for me actually I will not
- 12:21be supporting but. I think he's a very.
- 12:23Talented man. And I specifically, like I said,
- 12:26I love the witch subversion so much.
- 12:28I actually had a moment where I was getting like everyone to
- 12:32watch it. I was like, hey.
- 12:33Breaching the good word of. Like the Witcher logging into my
- 12:37my Vicky, making them watch the movie and him and his Co star
- 12:44Kim Daumi. They're just phenomenal
- 12:46together. So like this project and you
- 12:49know, our beloved summer like them working together is just it
- 12:52was so exciting to see. But I, I do want to check out
- 12:55more of his projects. I'll probably will check out the
- 12:57one you mentioned that's coming up, but lately I just haven't
- 13:00been appealing to me personally. I I really like him, but one of
- 13:07the things that I appreciate the most about him, it's the fact of
- 13:11how how diverse his projects are because he has this softest
- 13:16face, like he very babyface, a soft face.
- 13:20And then he plays a character like he did in the witch and
- 13:23you're like damn, like the man can really.
- 13:27He plays a great psycho character, but he also does a
- 13:31great golden retriever kind of character.
- 13:34So he's got range, which I can really, really appreciate in an
- 13:38actor, I think. Yeah, he's my favorite soft boy.
- 13:42I love Time was Chic and I was really excited to watch him
- 13:46again in our beloved summer. Kim Dummy is his Co star.
- 13:49She plays Kukung Sue. She has not been like noticeably
- 13:53hasn't been in that many things TV shows for four television
- 13:58shows period, including Ethan one class that was the first
- 14:01thing she ever did for television 9 Puzzles recently
- 14:05this year. And then it looks like she's got
- 14:07another project coming out this year called Memories of #100 on
- 14:12JTBC. So it's not not a Netflix, not
- 14:15on Disney Plus, you know, regular network.
- 14:18And then we've got 6 movies from her, including the witch Part 1,
- 14:22the subversion, like I said, the Witch Part 2, it looks like she
- 14:25makes an appearance in that one, The great Flood and Soulmate.
- 14:28So yeah, kind of a newer face in K drama land.
- 14:32But she's been in some bangers like Eaten one class which did
- 14:36gangbusters and is really well known.
- 14:39There's other people in this cast as well that is kind of
- 14:42like, oh, the second male lead is played by Kim Sung Toll and
- 14:45like this person's played by so and so.
- 14:47And we can go on until, you know, we got the whole cast
- 14:50down. But those are our main 2 in our
- 14:53beloved summer. So at this point, we're going to
- 14:56ask, what did you think of our beloved summer?
- 14:58How did you maybe, you know, think about it on this rewatch
- 15:02or coming in to do this podcast? I think I enjoyed it.
- 15:09It's really nice to actually watch it in summertime because I
- 15:11feel like it's such a beautiful vibe.
- 15:14I still think this is one of the best directed K dramas that I've
- 15:19ever watched. It's just stunning to watch.
- 15:22The scenes that I like remembered are just as good.
- 15:26I like watching it a second time.
- 15:28Their chemistry, the character development, their relationship,
- 15:32I enjoyed all of those aspects. I will say the only thing or one
- 15:38of the only things that I didn't really care for on a reward, I
- 15:41didn't really care for the rest of the cast.
- 15:44Like I, I think it's because I had I already knew the story.
- 15:50So rewatching it again, I was like, it doesn't that part of
- 15:54the story doesn't really activate me that much anymore.
- 15:58But you know, with our main couple, I still loved watching
- 16:02them and then a story and I had forgotten how the story kind of
- 16:06develops anyways. I remembered like little key
- 16:09moments, but overall I still enjoyed it as a rewatch.
- 16:14But like I said, I didn't navigate towards the secondary
- 16:19cast as much as I did the first time around.
- 16:22Right, Becky? Listen, I I love this drama so
- 16:27much, almost too much and I just have such an attachment to the
- 16:32characters, the storyline, the directing, the pacing.
- 16:35However, I think there is such a thing as watching a show too
- 16:40many times to when it comes to re watching it, you're like, I
- 16:45don't care about these characters or like, you know, I
- 16:48don't, you know, And I think I, I got to that point because I
- 16:53have watched the show. I don't even know how many times
- 16:57at this point really. It's like it's, it's a comfort
- 16:59drama. So I would put it, I think
- 17:02maybe, maybe I'm exaggerate maybe like four or five times.
- 17:05Oh wow. OK.
- 17:06So well, that's so I think it was a little lackluster for me
- 17:09this time just because it's such a comfort show to me.
- 17:14But I think I had watched it too recently to like really kind of
- 17:19see it from different perspectives.
- 17:20Although, you know, I do just adore this show, the music.
- 17:25Oh my God it was nostalgic. The OST is hearing unassailable.
- 17:30Unassailable OST like top five this.
- 17:34Yeah, listening to V sing again, I was just like, as he's coming
- 17:38out of the village, I'm just like, this is the perfect time
- 17:41for me to be doing this right now.
- 17:43It. Was just, it was so nice to hear
- 17:47those songs again. It made me want to break out
- 17:49like my OST and my record player and just like, but I do love it.
- 17:55I always recommend it. The only thing is, you know, if
- 17:58you are doing a rewatch, it is a slower drama.
- 18:01And I'll never forget because my first time watching this, I
- 18:04remember I was watching it ongoing and I paused it because
- 18:07like there was not really a lot going on and you know, I was
- 18:10busy with life and stuff. Then I went back to it and I'm
- 18:12like, why did I ever pause this drama?
- 18:14But they're all are lulls that make you want to know, like, you
- 18:18know, so if you like fast-paced dramas or you like, this is more
- 18:23of a relaxing comfort drama, and I love it.
- 18:26But for me, yeah, the rewatch, it was still good.
- 18:30It was still good. But that's my little confession.
- 18:33OK, no, it's not much of A confession because I'm, I'm
- 18:35there with you. I ate this drama up the first
- 18:39time that I watched it. I watched it I think as it was
- 18:42airing in 2021 into 2022. It was our second, you know,
- 18:46pandemic holiday season and then into the new year.
- 18:50So I think it caught us at a really good time in our lives
- 18:54where we really, we're slowing down, like as a society.
- 18:58And so I think maybe our attention spans were a little
- 19:01better several years ago than it is now.
- 19:04I kind of want to say I felt that there was a lot that they
- 19:08probably could have cut out on this rewatch and it would have
- 19:11made the drama better. And maybe 16 episodes was too
- 19:15much for what the story is. And I kind of was shocked
- 19:22because several months ago, this was already when I had decided
- 19:25I'm going to do Our Beloved summer.
- 19:26I'm going to rewatch Our Beloved summer.
- 19:28I found out that people didn't like Our beloved summer.
- 19:32What? Yes, I had been reading some
- 19:35discourse in the comments sections is about our beloved
- 19:38summer. It was getting a lot of slander
- 19:39and I was kind of shocked that people didn't like it.
- 19:44And funny enough, the Koreans also didn't like it.
- 19:47So it had really disappointing ratings on domestic television.
- 19:52But it became widely popular internationally due to
- 19:56streaming. So this is another case of the
- 19:58Koreans were watching this. I think it was 3 to 5% average
- 20:02was the viewership. That is not good ratings at all.
- 20:07And I think the finale episode was the most that people had
- 20:11watched it at like. 5.3 percent, 5.9% in Seoul.
- 20:17Nobody watched this. In Korea, this was not.
- 20:19This was ranked like 17th, 19th, 20th like around there for K
- 20:24dramas that were airing to set the scene.
- 20:26The next K drama that became big right after this finished airing
- 20:29was Business Proposal. So you can see like around the
- 20:34same time what people were frenzied around and our beloved
- 20:39summer is a totally different pace.
- 20:42It is really freaking slow. It's a almost like a dreamy,
- 20:47atmospheric slice of life show and I loved it on the rewatch.
- 20:54I still really, really liked it, but not as much as I did the
- 20:58first time. And I found somebody, somebody's
- 21:02comment because you know how you can leave reviews in my drama
- 21:05list? So.
- 21:07On this one I decided to read the first couple.
- 21:10The first one was a good review. The second one said my beloved
- 21:13time dot dot dot wasted. That's I'll be started their
- 21:18review and I was like expand like quickly.
- 21:21I wanted to see what they said because it hit me very
- 21:25positively. I really like this show.
- 21:28I thought it was super nostalgic and you know, to summer refers
- 21:33to like the summer of your life, right?
- 21:36I loved that concept. I loved the second chance
- 21:39romance and I really really enjoyed large swaths of the show
- 21:43even on 2nd watch. This person says I've never been
- 21:47as disappointed in a drama as I was with this one.
- 21:53It started off well with beautiful cinematography and OS
- 21:56TS, fun plot, good actors. That's where it all ends.
- 22:01They said it after the first few episodes it felt monotonous and
- 22:04repetitive. The lovey dovey moments, thought
- 22:08out characters, fun bickering. They were missing depth is what
- 22:12they were saying. At any point, stop me and we can
- 22:15like talk through some of these accusations.
- 22:17I agree on that necessarily, yeah.
- 22:20No, they, I think they went into a lot of it, especially with the
- 22:23flashbacks of how you got to see how each character handled all
- 22:28those emotions and everything that happened to them in the
- 22:31story. Like, I don't, I don't agree
- 22:34with that. It says the trailer seemed
- 22:35fresh, nuanced, promise. All this.
- 22:38Afterwards, everything was dull. Filler is what they said this
- 22:43drama was. The biggest issue was despite
- 22:45all the love professions acute mimmons, I didn't care for the
- 22:48couple very much. After showing us how Yongsu
- 22:50constantly broke up with him whenever she wanted, the
- 22:53immature miscommunications, the imbalances in the relationship,
- 22:56I just didn't want to see them together.
- 22:58So she didn't even root. This person didn't even root for
- 23:01the main couple. See like.
- 23:04The relationship is real though. Couples go through these things.
- 23:08It's realistic as like what is to happen?
- 23:12Liliana, what were you going? To say, well, I was going to say
- 23:17there is when you're thinking about the whole thing of she
- 23:22does just I, I personally, and it hit me way more on this
- 23:26second rewatch. I personally hate couples that
- 23:31are just like, let's break up, let's get back together, let's
- 23:34break up, let's get back together.
- 23:36And the fact that she does just throw a breakup charge
- 23:42constantly and his friend next door is just like just go and
- 23:47apologize. And there's like no real chatter
- 23:51between them, no real like communication in the past in the
- 23:55flashbacks. I feel like there's a little bit
- 23:58more in the, you know, current time.
- 24:02I feel like as they develop, they become better communicators
- 24:08with each other and they tell each other stuff that they
- 24:11didn't know before. And that's when you start to
- 24:14sort of root. I think they, but The thing is,
- 24:17by the end, I feel like they're, they're still a work in progress
- 24:22in a relationship and that that's realistic because a
- 24:26relationship at the end of the day is a constant work in
- 24:29progress. So I feel like saying, you know,
- 24:34yes, they're immature. They were kids.
- 24:37They were like, what, 1617 when they first started dating?
- 24:41Well, they were older than that because they were seniors
- 24:44basically in high school, which means they were 1819 years old,
- 24:49and then they dated for five years, so they were around 25
- 24:53years old. Their brains weren't fully.
- 24:56Developed. Yeah, they still weren't full
- 24:58adults. Yeah, I think they both had like
- 25:02levels of immaturity. And there's definitely a lot of
- 25:05character development that they both had to go through.
- 25:09But now I will agree with Liliana and with like the whole
- 25:13her doing like, if you if you don't say the specific things
- 25:17like I, I don't want to be with you or like, you know, let's
- 25:19break up. And that was a little annoying,
- 25:22especially because I want like you want to root for, but then
- 25:25you see how immature she was in the past.
- 25:27But I mean, everyone grows and learns from their mistakes, so.
- 25:30This person said that it could have been a great healing drama,
- 25:33but instead they felt the opposite, like they were
- 25:36codependent because Teun could only sleep with Yunsu by his
- 25:41side and Yunsu felt empty without him.
- 25:45And I thought that was a really harsh accusation to level
- 25:49against the show. Yeah, the fact that they called
- 25:53them codependent, I was like, OK, look, they had to basically
- 25:58face a lot of things on their own individually and then
- 26:01together. And to me, this person like,
- 26:04really didn't like the first love aspect because they are
- 26:09each other's first love and then they come back.
- 26:11It's a second chance romance type of deal.
- 26:14And they were like, it's OK to not stay with the person that
- 26:17who was your first love. And absolutely that's true.
- 26:20True in real life, true in K drama land.
- 26:22But that's where the magic is, is that they were in the prime
- 26:28of their lives together, making mistakes, being flawed together.
- 26:36And there is that immaturity like we talked about.
- 26:39And then they break up and when they get back together they
- 26:41still have shit that they have to like, get over.
- 26:45Yeah. I would say that the positive of
- 26:48this show is that it is brutally realistic in that sense.
- 26:53Did you guys feel like that was, you know, a pro to the show
- 26:57instead of a con? I liked it.
- 27:00I think it's definitely a pro. I could see, see, I, I could see
- 27:06myself a little bit in the relationship.
- 27:09I look, I've been together with my partner since I was 18.
- 27:13I'm now 32. Like we've been together a
- 27:15really long time. The relationship we had when we
- 27:17were, you know, I was 18, he was 21.
- 27:20And the relationship we have now where, you know, we're both in
- 27:25our 30s is very different. We communicate, OK, so much
- 27:30different and I think that's a pro to this show because it does
- 27:34do that to they go, they have. And actually I feel like that
- 27:39breakup worked in their favour because they were forced to sort
- 27:44of go and deal with their stuff. And that's something that I
- 27:47don't usually say. I don't usually like breakups in
- 27:51a show, but in this one, it makes complete sense for them to
- 27:55do that. It is a pro that it is realistic
- 27:58because K dramas don't necessarily all the time have to
- 28:01be, you know, so far fetched that you can't see characters
- 28:06being out there in the real world.
- 28:09And that is the case. Like you could see these
- 28:11characters. This could be a story happening
- 28:14in real life, right? And people aren't going to vibe.
- 28:17Not everybody's going to vibe with that.
- 28:20And I feel like what this commenter is saying is they
- 28:23didn't vibe with the couple. And if you're not going to vibe
- 28:26with the couple, you're not going to make the.
- 28:28Couple say you're not just going to like the.
- 28:29Show they said Yongsu and Eng were kind of boring both in and
- 28:33out of the relationship. I didn't.
- 28:36I didn't ever feel that they had that strong of a connection and
- 28:39I never got why they kept breaking up and getting back
- 28:42together in the 1st place. Overall their relationship just
- 28:45didn't work for me. And yes, they were cute during
- 28:46the end, but it doesn't make up for everything else.
- 28:50I don't think this person's been in a relationship not to.
- 28:54I'm just going to say that no, but this is the thing that like
- 28:57anyone would understand in a relationship.
- 29:00And that's why these dramas, you know when you watch them, it's
- 29:03great to see character development.
- 29:04It's great to see communication, but every relationship has its
- 29:09ups and downs. Sometimes there's
- 29:11miscommunication, sometimes you don't agree with one another.
- 29:14The biggest thing is talking that out, having that
- 29:16communication and having an understanding of what your
- 29:20partner needs and helping them, but also them helping you.
- 29:24You know, that's the biggest thing.
- 29:25I liked our beloved summer. Like, here's my thing.
- 29:30I didn't mean to get you guys upset, like, no.
- 29:32No, I just know this is interesting because it's the
- 29:35first time I've ever heard someone say like that much
- 29:37negative things about this drama.
- 29:38And I just, it's like engraved in my heart.
- 29:41So here's my thing. There are so many dramas where
- 29:44the couple gets together and then they break up for like the
- 29:47last three episodes, right? I think that is the stupidest
- 29:51thing. So I like this drama because we
- 29:55don't have to like we're seeing those flashbacks, but we're also
- 29:59seeing them, them build this whole new relationship, build a
- 30:03better version of themselves and grow with each other, which I
- 30:07adore. And I just, I really think this
- 30:11commenter that's just like, oh, they're boring.
- 30:13They they just relationships can be boring.
- 30:16Call me boring then. Because this is not all
- 30:18exciting. This is literally.
- 30:19Me, I go to work, I come home like, yeah, what do you want?
- 30:24And like, even if it's a show that they're they're looking for
- 30:27excitement, I mean, I'm I'm pretty sure is the tag slice of
- 30:30life or like it's, it's, it's a nice healing.
- 30:33Like, it's just not supposed to be like, riveting.
- 30:37Like is there supposed to be like cheating and like crazy?
- 30:39Slot heavy show. First of all, I am a plot.
- 30:42Person. I am a plot person.
- 30:44This is not a plot heavy show, OK?
- 30:46This is vibes. Yes, this is a lot of vibes.
- 30:49The genres listed in my drama list are romance, life, Youth,
- 30:53Drama. There you go, that's.
- 30:56The tags are lovers, reunited, second chance, romance, high
- 31:00school sweethearts, character development, first love,
- 31:05healing, flashback to pass, love slash, hate, relationship
- 31:09interview, and coming of age. So those are the tags that my
- 31:14drama list has. I think interview was just
- 31:16thrown. In Yeah, I don't.
- 31:18I've never like I need to click on interview and see what other
- 31:21dramas are in. Somebody asked me my favorite
- 31:23type of drama. I go the interview drama.
- 31:26Interview dramas. The interview dramas, Irving.
- 31:29Bro, bro. So if you had to give an
- 31:34elevator pitch to someone who's on the fence about watching our
- 31:38beloved summer, what? What would your pitch be?
- 31:41I think my elevator pitch would be two people, second chance
- 31:46romance because you got to throw that out there straight away.
- 31:49You have to. Like list the tropes.
- 31:50Yeah, second chance romance with two floored people on a Rd. to
- 31:58make themselves better. Something along those lines.
- 32:02Very. Nice, I like that.
- 32:05I feel like mine would be more like trying to rope.
- 32:09So I I does my pitch. You know I OK.
- 32:12You like enemies to lovers, right?
- 32:14Absolutely. What if they already dated
- 32:17before that and then they broke up, Met again, but obviously
- 32:22they're not on the same page anymore.
- 32:23He hates her. She's just trying to, I don't
- 32:26know if I say work with him, that's kind of a spoil anyways,
- 32:29right? So they end up going back into
- 32:32each other's lives and they have all grown significantly from
- 32:35when they dated. And they get to learn about the
- 32:39person that they their first love and how much they've grown
- 32:43and changed and grow and love the new version of them.
- 32:48I like that it's. Beautiful.
- 32:49I love the documentary aspect of the show that was pretty unique
- 32:54when it first came out. And so the concept of the
- 32:57documentary and the thesis, I guess, of the whole show is that
- 33:00it's the ordinary moments, the mundane moments in life that
- 33:05make up our story. And sometimes you have to take a
- 33:08step back and be the documentarian and say, wow,
- 33:12sometimes I can't see it because I'm in the middle of this shit.
- 33:14But like, this is, this is my life.
- 33:17These are the best parts of my life.
- 33:19And it is the everyday moments where I'm going to see my friend
- 33:22who owns a a pub and she's trying to get business going.
- 33:26And it's when I am out here watering my front lawn and my
- 33:32flower beds. And it's when I'm peeling onions
- 33:35for my parents restaurant business and it's soup.
- 33:39Putting up zucchini too too big and putting it in soup.
- 33:45Yes, it's chopping, being in a complete daze, being strung out
- 33:49over the sky and chopping zucchini too large to put in
- 33:52soup, but doing it anyway. Those are the moments that make
- 33:56life interesting and fun, and that's what you remember.
- 33:59And that would be in my documentary too.
- 34:02You know, all of us would have a really boring quote UN quote
- 34:05documentary if they made one about us and the story is there.
- 34:11It's really simple and I like it.
- 34:14Each each episode sometimes has the name of a movie attached to
- 34:18it, which sometimes doesn't have anything to do with the movie
- 34:23that like it's referencing, But that's fine.
- 34:26It's it's all for cute show. It has Swarovski flip phones,
- 34:31subway product placement, I mean all the good stuff.
- 34:35A classic K drop. Classy.
- 34:36It's a classy K drop and it's slow and I think it probably
- 34:41works best when you don't binge the show.
- 34:44Yeah, no, I I feel like it's definitely, it's not, it's not a
- 34:50binge watch because, you know, there's no cliffhangers at the
- 34:53end of every episode that you're like, I need to know what
- 34:55happens next. It's kind of just it's something
- 34:57you watch slow paced. But I want to go back to what
- 35:00you said about if they made our lives documentaries because we
- 35:03spend most of our time watching shows.
- 35:05Literally. So it would literally just be us
- 35:08watching shows that's. It watching TV, yelling at the.
- 35:12Screen. Falling asleep watching your
- 35:14show. Like this, this reminds me this
- 35:19conversation and back to what that commenter was saying about
- 35:22like how boring it is and whatnot.
- 35:25And and specifically about like relationships being boring and
- 35:29whatnot. There's this this is completely
- 35:31off base, but it's also related. There was this series on TikTok
- 35:35about this creator who was making who like he does skits,
- 35:40right? And one of the skits was about
- 35:42this woman who just come home and talk to her husband about
- 35:47what they were going to cook for dinner and how her day was.
- 35:50And it's like the most mundane things ever, right?
- 35:55And tons of you could see the difference like women and even
- 35:59men, but mostly women, all in the comments were just like,
- 36:04this is the dream. This is this is the dream
- 36:07because because you're just coming home to talk about
- 36:09whether it's your partner, whether you know it's your
- 36:12roommate, your whoever you live with, you're just coming home to
- 36:16somebody to talk about your day and whatnot.
- 36:19And isn't that like the most mundane yet wonderful thing?
- 36:24It's practice. And then we do this exactly 365
- 36:27days a year. Yeah.
- 36:29Like, give me a break. Like some of these K dramas.
- 36:32I feel like that was a really harsh like review of it and.
- 36:36That was. They probably should have just
- 36:38dropped it. Some people just don't.
- 36:40They don't drop drama, so they keep going and then they're
- 36:42like, really? They hate watch it.
- 36:44So I don't like hate watching but anyway.
- 36:47No. We're going to give our scores
- 36:49and then we're going to get into the spoiler section, which
- 36:51again, this is a very slice of life, mundane drama.
- 36:54Not much to spoil, but we'll get into it.
- 36:57So how many Hoju bottles would you give our beloved summer?
- 37:04I've been thinking about this just like if it was my first
- 37:09watch I would have probably been like, I don't know, a 4.5 or
- 37:15something along those lines because I loved it so much.
- 37:19But nowadays I feel like it's more like a 3.5 for soju bottles
- 37:28around about that. Probably like a 3.5 I would say
- 37:31for me. Yeah, I would say about the
- 37:34same. I think what Liliana said
- 37:37earlier on just about how like some of the characters you're
- 37:40just like, I don't, I don't like you actually.
- 37:43So just skip their scenes because you're like, I just, you
- 37:46know, so I think that was me and my rewatch.
- 37:50I was just like, I don't think I ever liked this character.
- 37:53So why am I watching a scene with only them in it, you know,
- 37:56and then just kind of skipping through it.
- 37:58But I still love the message of, you know, finding who you are
- 38:03again and having that second chance romance and also creating
- 38:07new memories. But you know, getting to see
- 38:09those flashbacks with the old and seeing how much they've
- 38:11grown as individual people and then seeing them grow together.
- 38:17Absolutely. So I'm going to go on the higher
- 38:20side because it's it's only half of soulju, but I'll give it 4
- 38:24out of five Soulju bottles. That is what I gave it when I
- 38:27initially watched the show and I'll just go ahead and give it
- 38:30the same thing now. I think the things that bothered
- 38:34me back then are probably not the same things that bothered me
- 38:36now. So it's probably going to shake
- 38:39out the same anyway. But it definitely made me
- 38:41nostalgic for a time or a romanticized high school and
- 38:46university years in a way that I have never done in my own life,
- 38:50which is strange to say, but I don't want to.
- 38:54People are like, don't you miss high school?
- 38:55Fuck no, I do not miss high school.
- 38:58I don't miss college. Like I don't miss that time at
- 39:00all. But this show is maybe very
- 39:02sentimental for that time in my life, even though it looks
- 39:06wildly different for these characters.
- 39:09And I think this show captured the essence of youth, the
- 39:12playfulness of it. And these characters are
- 39:16extremely flawed, but it was worth it to see them work
- 39:20through their issues. You know, this show has a lot of
- 39:24like themes of abandonment and, and feelings of inferiority.
- 39:28Like how are you going to get through those feelings and heal
- 39:32through that when you still want to be with the person who that
- 39:35you're like, messing things up with because of these issues?
- 39:38So it's tough. I love that the docu series had
- 39:43the flavor of When Harry Metzali, which is like my
- 39:46favorite ROM com of all time. It does the same thing as When
- 39:49Harry Metzali and I just think it had a beautiful vibe.
- 39:55Beautiful vibe. So 4 out of five soju bottles.
- 40:00And with that, we are going to talk about spoilers for our
- 40:05beloved summer. Excuse me, you know I have no
- 40:09Jingle. Oh, sorry.
- 40:21OK, we're on the other side of spoilers, so we are going to
- 40:24spoil whatever is left of our beloved summer.
- 40:27Like I said, it's pretty pretty simple story set up, but I have
- 40:31here in episode 1, which is titled I know what you did last
- 40:35summer. Now it has nothing to do with
- 40:37the, you know, hook wielding mass murderer like I know what
- 40:41you did last summer does, but we'll get into this nostalgia
- 40:47ridden 2011 that they have going on here, because that's where we
- 40:50start our story and we find out a lot about our two characters.
- 40:53Something that was kind of irking me in a lot of the
- 40:57comments was like people didn't. When I say a lot of the
- 41:00comments, I mean like all over social media and of course
- 41:03riddled through this MDL comment review that I read in the non
- 41:08spoiler section. People didn't understand why Yun
- 41:11SU, like, would break up with him in the past.
- 41:15Like, why even break up? It's been five years.
- 41:18You know, you've gone through ups and downs, you've broken up
- 41:20on and off, you're the on and off couple.
- 41:23And finally you decide to, like, end it.
- 41:25Why? And in Episode 1, like, we get
- 41:28so much of their essence and their characters just when
- 41:33they're doing these flashback sequences.
- 41:35And he says our male lead says what bothers him most is selfish
- 41:40people. And she says to rebut that
- 41:43because they're doing like these interviews, like side by side,
- 41:45it's so messy. So she says people who cause
- 41:49trouble for others, if you want to fail, then go fail on your
- 41:52own. Why do you have to drag others
- 41:54down with you? Which in that moment, she's
- 41:56doing that as like a Barb to him because he's a slacker in
- 42:00school. He's an academic slacker.
- 42:02But this comes into play later because she feels that way about
- 42:06everybody, including herself. She doesn't want to drag others
- 42:10down to her misery, her level, her struggles.
- 42:16She considers it a failure if she has an audience to watch her
- 42:20fail. And so that's literally like
- 42:23you're given kind of the recent right off the bat in these
- 42:28little back and forth that they have in the docu series.
- 42:32And he says, all I want is a peaceful life.
- 42:34Well, if all hell is breaking loose in her life, why would she
- 42:38drag her little boyfriend who's really soft, doesn't like to do
- 42:42any work, doesn't want to have a hard life.
- 42:46He wants to live a peaceful life.
- 42:48Like she's not going to drag that oaf down with her.
- 42:51I, I, you know, I had a lot of grace for her the first time
- 42:56around and I had a little bit less grace for her this second
- 42:59time around. Especially her like antics in
- 43:02the present day. What is what is seen as the
- 43:04present day. I was like, I don't know, she's
- 43:07grown, she should know better. But when she was younger and the
- 43:10reason why they broke up, I totally understood it.
- 43:12How did you guys feel about their breakup?
- 43:15I, I think I didn't mind it. And it's also because they are
- 43:20very, very different characters from each other, right?
- 43:25Their belief systems are very different and their backgrounds
- 43:28are very different and they are kind of reflections of what life
- 43:34has kind of brought them. So it's kind of one of those
- 43:37situations where you're looking at it and I'm thinking, I don't
- 43:43agree with you, but I can see why you're making the decisions
- 43:46that you're making. And that is a very important
- 43:50distinction to make. A lot of people just like throw,
- 43:54oh, but I would have done this and I would have done that, yes.
- 43:57But you don't have the life experience that that character
- 44:01has. So your actions are obviously
- 44:04going to be different. So it's definitely one of those
- 44:06situations where I always think I don't like what you're doing.
- 44:11I don't agree with it, but I can understand why you're doing it.
- 44:15She was struggling. She was truly struggling, and
- 44:18she doesn't want other people to see her struggle.
- 44:22She doesn't want other people to see her failing at what she's
- 44:25doing. So she's.
- 44:27So prideful she is. She's so.
- 44:30Prideful. She's so stubborn.
- 44:33She doesn't want to be vulnerable, you know, she
- 44:35doesn't want to expose, you know, the weakness facade that
- 44:39she's doing and the and her weaknesses.
- 44:41Definitely because she's such a strong character.
- 44:44And you see in the beginning her belief system and how she's
- 44:46like, I'm going to be someone, I'm going to be great.
- 44:49I'm going to, you know, And then as things pan out, she's like,
- 44:54this isn't, I don't want people to see this.
- 44:58Yeah, exactly. And I think it's even more
- 45:01obvious later on. This is like a quote from very
- 45:06much later on. It's from episode 13.
- 45:09But they've gotten together and everything.
- 45:11And she just says, I always have to be more careful at times like
- 45:15these because misery often comes disguised as happiness.
- 45:18And you're thinking, you know, that encapsulates her character,
- 45:23doesn't it? She's like in.
- 45:24Fight or flight all the time. Exactly.
- 45:26Constantly. Constantly and that is very
- 45:30draining on a person to be like that all the time.
- 45:33Now imagine having to bring somebody else into that who
- 45:38isn't like that at all and who is very different from you and
- 45:42just kind of rolls with the punches.
- 45:45So you know, I, I completely understood where she was coming
- 45:50from, even though I don't necessarily agree with her
- 45:53actions or her decisions. And The thing is like a lot of
- 45:56people will argue for well, if she had just explained to him
- 46:01that. Like what's?
- 46:02Happening. Yeah.
- 46:03Just communicate, yes. But that is the whole point.
- 46:07She doesn't want to communicate because she doesn't want to be
- 46:10in that position. She doesn't want him to see that
- 46:13from her. So because she's always been
- 46:16seen as this very smart, intelligent girl who has
- 46:19everything together and everything like, you know, her
- 46:23life is all together. So, you know, what is she going
- 46:27to do? Yeah.
- 46:29So yeah. There was that flashback
- 46:31sequence, which I paid a little more attention to this time
- 46:33around, where I think she had some friends in middle school or
- 46:37high school who would often ask her to go out with them for
- 46:40lunch or go to the convenience store or whatever.
- 46:42And she would always be like, no, no, thank you, it's fine,
- 46:45thank you for inviting me. But no.
- 46:46And they would bring her back stuff, bring her back a little
- 46:49like banana milk or what have you, little snacks that she
- 46:52could have. And she overhears them one day
- 46:54talking shit about her and saying, oh, so she never says
- 46:57yes to to coming with us. And then she never gets us
- 47:01anything, even though we get her snacks and we get her all these
- 47:04things when we go out. And she never gets us anything
- 47:07in return. And there was another girl in
- 47:09that group that was like, yeah, but we never like, she doesn't
- 47:12ask us to bring her anything from these stores.
- 47:14Like we're just doing it of our own volition.
- 47:17But there is this recipe. The concept of reciprocity is
- 47:21brought up here, even in the flashback sequence where she
- 47:25cannot give what is customary or what what is, what is seen as
- 47:30like the bare minimum for other people in society.
- 47:34Like there should be a give and take.
- 47:37And if they bring her something, she should also bring them
- 47:39something the next time. And she doesn't.
- 47:42She's so poor that she can't even do that in middle school
- 47:46and in school. And that plays out in their
- 47:50relationship, too, because he is very giving toward her.
- 47:53He is so sweet toward her, and she never reciprocates in the
- 47:59same way, shape or form. She does it in her own way.
- 48:03Like, they have different love languages, sure, but when she
- 48:06has to kind of like shore up her grandmother got sick and then
- 48:11her uncle's debts are being called in and they like overturn
- 48:15her entire apartment and things are going haywire in her life,
- 48:19she totally can't reciprocate anything that he could have
- 48:24given to her in this time period.
- 48:26She doesn't like to owe people. Yeah.
- 48:30I thought that was a very important scene and I don't know
- 48:33if you guys picked up on any other little things that really,
- 48:37you know, spoke to her character.
- 48:39I think you can see where she's coming from, You know, even the
- 48:44scene when right before they break up, right, And you get to
- 48:48see her practice in the mirror saying to him, I want to break
- 48:54up with you. And it's just like she had to
- 48:57say it so many times in front of the mirror so that she would be
- 49:02able to carry that out, to say it to him without any emotion.
- 49:07And then she turns around and you can see all the emotion kind
- 49:11of hit her at once. And I feel like that's what she
- 49:14is. She hides a lot behind all of
- 49:17these walls that she builds, and it's really, really difficult to
- 49:22get through to her. But he does it in, you know, he
- 49:25kind of just blunders his way through kind of life.
- 49:29Disarms her so easily and he doesn't even realize he's doing
- 49:33it. So it's just kind of what's
- 49:35special about them, Becky. Liliana, when you said that, it
- 49:39just made me realize. So you said she had to practice
- 49:44it so many times in the mirror to say it.
- 49:46Do you know who else practice something so many times to do?
- 49:50Our man, when he was going to spray water and throw salt, they
- 49:53were like he practiced so many times to do this.
- 49:59And I just do. That that's true.
- 50:02That is true, yeah. But she's really pitiful I think
- 50:07in her younger years and also kind of hard to like because she
- 50:12is so gruff. She is so aggressive and her
- 50:16grandmother says being hot tempered is a must when you're
- 50:19poor. Don't let others look down on
- 50:21you. It's armor.
- 50:23It's all armor that she needs to survive because people are even
- 50:29when she wasn't even doing anything.
- 50:32People are like talking shit about her, you know, Just her
- 50:35manner was upsetting to them and pride and keeping what little
- 50:42dignity she had was was everything to her.
- 50:45I thought that was important. And she's so petty.
- 50:48I love that she's petty though. Yeah, I like that she's petty.
- 50:51It's the best part and and then they're both petty to each.
- 50:54Other they are. Petty.
- 50:56It's like a petty off, like I love it.
- 51:00Yeah, I think he is really petty as well.
- 51:03That's that scene. And I think there was a story in
- 51:06episode 3 which is called 10 Things I Hate About You.
- 51:10It's like uncovering. All of the little things that
- 51:12make them horrible, it's one I'm just going to drop that that's
- 51:15one of my all time favorite movies.
- 51:17Just. It is I.
- 51:19It's a good. I love 10 Things I Hate About
- 51:22You. Loved it.
- 51:24I do too, but he's petty as shit because when he was a kid, he
- 51:29was trying to get back at the second male lead, the other own
- 51:32character. He was like, oh, I'll give him
- 51:34shaved ice with Peaches on top because he's allergic to
- 51:37Peaches. Hello.
- 51:39They're both allergic to Peaches and they both get sent to the
- 51:43emergency room. And this like is a huge like,
- 51:48you could say it's a red flag, but it's also just like he is so
- 51:51petty that he's willing. The second male lead says he's
- 51:54so he's a type who's willing to endure his own pain if it means
- 51:58he can make others suffer just as badly, if not worse.
- 52:03And the fact that he himself was also allergic to Peaches and
- 52:07eating shaved ice with Peaches just to get back at this other
- 52:11guy. I mean, honestly, that and
- 52:13that's him as a child. Yeah, he gets so much worse as
- 52:18an adult. He grows.
- 52:20It's like grows. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:24I will say I do appreciate the fact that the pettiness never
- 52:27goes away between them. It's like a constant and I
- 52:31really enjoy that because it makes the relationship fun and
- 52:36it makes their banter really good between each other.
- 52:39Yes. So yeah.
- 52:41Yeah, I like that there's nobody in his drawings.
- 52:44He never draws people. And when they ask him about an
- 52:47episode, when he says, I love things that don't change, but
- 52:50people change or disappear over time.
- 52:53That's why there are no people or time in my works.
- 52:56Which is a very beautiful poetic thought.
- 53:00But it also stems from he was abandoned as a child and he
- 53:05doesn't like impermanence and thickleness of people and the
- 53:09way that he can just be abandoned.
- 53:12And the breakup was really severe for him.
- 53:15But it's because he has abandonment issues.
- 53:18Yeah, and The thing is, a lot of people will crap on our female.
- 53:22She didn't know any of this. Like she don't know, no.
- 53:26Idea. She had no idea this was a thing
- 53:30because like, his mom speaks to her and she says to Yongsu, he
- 53:35took the breakup really, really badly.
- 53:38Like, he took it really badly. And she's like to her, you know,
- 53:44it does affect her as well. It's just in different ways than
- 53:47it affects him. He kind of almost shuts down.
- 53:50And, yeah, whereas she just diverts the energy into
- 53:56something else. And it's just different ways of
- 54:00dealing with pain and with life. And I think that's a thing that
- 54:06this show is actually quite good as well.
- 54:07Is that like showing how people deal with different situations,
- 54:12You know, And this one's quite obvious about that.
- 54:15She's also very selfish. And I feel like that plays into
- 54:20they were together for five years and she never delved into
- 54:25his childhood, never asked about him growing up, maybe poked
- 54:28around in such a way where he would feel comfortable with
- 54:32telling her, hey, I've had nightmares since I was a child
- 54:37about being abandoned in the streets.
- 54:40And I know that whoever I am looking for is not my parents.
- 54:45And, you know, I know that I'm adopted.
- 54:49But also, like, if you look on the other side, it's what we
- 54:52were talking about earlier about being reciprocal.
- 54:56And I think she doesn't poke because she herself does not
- 54:59want to be poked. So I think that's sort of the
- 55:02biggest things about her character.
- 55:04And what it is, is it's not that she doesn't want to know.
- 55:08It's not that she doesn't like him.
- 55:10It's not that she doesn't love him.
- 55:12It's that she herself does not want to talk about her past.
- 55:16And if he talks about it, then there's going to be, you know,
- 55:20or if she digs into his, then there's going to be a want for
- 55:26him to, you know, for her to reciprocate that.
- 55:29And she doesn't want to do it. So I, I think that's what it is
- 55:33about, you know, those characters.
- 55:35And I also feel it was just a couple of episodes where they
- 55:37were going into their each. But especially him, he's very
- 55:42avoidant. He loves to run away from
- 55:44things. Anything that's hard, anything
- 55:46that he doesn't feel like doing, he just ever since he was a
- 55:50child, like they show that flashback scene of him like
- 55:52literally in a tree sitting in a tree to get away from doing a
- 55:56presentation in front of the class.
- 55:58And I think, I think the thing that sticks out to me the most
- 56:01is that he didn't want to deal with the plagiarizing rival
- 56:06artist in like the beginning of the show.
- 56:09And to me, that would be like #1 on my To Do List would be
- 56:12takedown of this dude who's like infringing on my copyright, on
- 56:18my artistic integrity because he's swearing up and down that
- 56:22he originated this style or that he started at 1st and that I
- 56:26copied him. All these lies, all this
- 56:28slander, and I would not let that slide.
- 56:30He was letting it slide. He was.
- 56:32Yeah, I think that really shows. I mean, he's very avoidant, but
- 56:36so. So can she be when they both met
- 56:39at the library because they were trying to avoid each other, Yes.
- 56:43Like, but yeah, I feel that, yeah.
- 56:47I quite liked Speaking of the artist, the plagiarizing artist,
- 56:52that he was going to go to the opening party or something for
- 56:56for that company or that project.
- 56:59And Taun doesn't have a suit. So he goes and enlists NJ, the K
- 57:05pop star to help him buy a suit. And I just love that little
- 57:08shopping trip. I thought it was so cute that he
- 57:11was like, yeah, I got to go do something, don't worry about it.
- 57:13And like on his own goes to get the suit and figure it out and
- 57:17he shows up looking fresh and like hair off of his forehead
- 57:20type of deal. I just liked it.
- 57:23I thought it was so cute that he was like, I need to be a grown
- 57:25up. Yeah, no, he literally, he was
- 57:29like, let's do this. Yeah, exactly.
- 57:33And then just, I think that embarrassment and betrayal that
- 57:36he felt when that artist was there at that same event, and he
- 57:40was like, hey, we're going to be having like that friendly
- 57:42competition and I guess we'll figure it out then.
- 57:44And he's like, what, you're doing this project, too?
- 57:47And it was so rude, so horrible of that other guy.
- 57:52Disrespectful. Disrespectful.
- 57:55But yeah, a couple of those characters.
- 57:58It was Eden Thiok who plays like the leader of that project or
- 58:03whatever. He has had a really good year.
- 58:07He was most recently with Soji sub in that drama Mercy for
- 58:13None. I think he was in that.
- 58:16I still need to watch. That So do I, so do I.
- 58:18He was in love scout, Love scout.
- 58:22Yeah. Like my heart.
- 58:24Artist Nua was played by quack Dong Young, who of course has
- 58:29been in a lot of things. I don't even know it's OK to not
- 58:33be OK. He was like the flasher.
- 58:36He won. The fact that's what you're
- 58:39like, that's the name, that's the title.
- 58:42He was, but that's because I watched it several months ago
- 58:45for the podcast. It was also in Vincenzo.
- 58:49Yes, thank you Vincenzo, which is also we have an episode on in
- 58:53the feed, but a lot of collecting Pokémon kind of deal
- 58:57in this show. She hates being poor.
- 59:00And in episode 6, we get a lot more of that.
- 59:04And I think it was interesting to see how he approached school,
- 59:09which was very important to her. And like, she helps him get in
- 59:12to college even though clearly he's not the student type at
- 59:17all, not the academic that she wants him to be.
- 59:21But, you know, she helped him get in and he helped her loosen
- 59:25up, you know, loosen up in life, be a little less severe to
- 59:29everybody, even though she is like, naturally so abrupt and
- 59:35mean to people. They would, Oh my God.
- 59:37There's like a little scene, I think in episode 6 as well,
- 59:40where flashback scene, he shows up early to her house and she
- 59:46comes out the front door and he's just there looking all like
- 59:49eager and sweet and awkward. And he carries her book bag.
- 59:54Do you like remember that? Yeah.
- 59:56Scene. Oh my God, I don't know.
- 59:58I don't know. Him taking some weight off of
- 1:00:00her book bag as she's wearing it.
- 1:00:02It's just adorable, yeah. It's adorable.
- 1:00:06But he was just so unbothered and everything about everything
- 1:00:10about her was she was bothered by everything.
- 1:00:13True. And he just wanted this stress
- 1:00:15free life, wanted to bask in the sunlight.
- 1:00:16And then she is on the struggle bus.
- 1:00:20I think that was a huge reason why they broke up as well, is
- 1:00:24that she saw him kind of getting things handed to him right in
- 1:00:29school. There was that professor that
- 1:00:30was like, hey, like go on this study abroad trip.
- 1:00:34I'm going to recommend you for it.
- 1:00:36You know, you can level up your art and all this stuff.
- 1:00:39It's going to be really good for you.
- 1:00:40It's a super lucrative opportunity and he was just not
- 1:00:43interested. He was like, leave the
- 1:00:45opportunity for somebody who really wants it.
- 1:00:47He had no no interest in turning his passion for art into any
- 1:00:52kind of vocation, any kind of paying gig.
- 1:00:56And meanwhile, her greatest ambition was to live an ordinary
- 1:01:00life like everybody has, get a job, make enough money to
- 1:01:04support her grandmother. And I think like to to add to
- 1:01:09your point, it shows like because he can fall back on his
- 1:01:14parents, right? He has that could she fall back?
- 1:01:18Whereas she sees school as the only way to get out.
- 1:01:23School is going to be her only option to make something of a
- 1:01:29self. And that's why she takes it so
- 1:01:32seriously, because this is like her one chance.
- 1:01:34Yes, seriously, one only way. Yeah.
- 1:01:37Whereas he he could literally have a cushy life.
- 1:01:41His parents own all of these places like his parents.
- 1:01:46And his parents don't push him to care either.
- 1:01:49His parents are just like, we just want you to be happy.
- 1:01:52They are like, you know, whereas for her, she doesn't have
- 1:01:55anything or anyone to fall back on.
- 1:01:58She has to do it herself. So yeah.
- 1:02:01Exactly. I thought it was a little like
- 1:02:04she crumbled when he said she was like, oh, I'm applying for
- 1:02:08jobs. I got to find a job and all this
- 1:02:09stuff and he was like, oh, I thought you'd do something more
- 1:02:13than that. Implying her dreams were pretty
- 1:02:15small, but she had a small mind about what she wanted to make of
- 1:02:19herself and what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.
- 1:02:21And it was just to be like a company woman to get a full time
- 1:02:24gig and not have to worry about money anymore.
- 1:02:27And he was like, oh, that's it. He was a bit judgey.
- 1:02:32He was a bit judgey on this, yeah.
- 1:02:35I do want to say though, what you touched on before saying
- 1:02:39that he helped her loosen up and she kind of helped him to in
- 1:02:44ways to like kind of grow up and start being an adult and stuff.
- 1:02:48But there's a moment I'll never I I just love this moment where
- 1:02:52like you see these flashbacks and he is just like, can we do
- 1:02:58this? Can we do this?
- 1:02:59Can we? And she's like, Nope, I'm busy.
- 1:03:00Nope, I have to do this. No, I'm doing that.
- 1:03:02But then you still see those moments where she takes the time
- 1:03:05to show she cares. And that's when he's like, oh, I
- 1:03:08want to see the cherry blossoms. And she's like, no, I have
- 1:03:10something else to do. And then she sees him sitting
- 1:03:12there and opens her hand and it's just a bunch of cherry
- 1:03:15blossoms falling on it. I.
- 1:03:16Mean she had to go and collect the cherry blossoms she.
- 1:03:18Brought the cherry blossoms to him to give him that experience
- 1:03:22because she was too busy and she had too much to do.
- 1:03:25But she still wanted to make him happy and show that she cares.
- 1:03:28Yeah, I agree. That was a really magical moment
- 1:03:30because she doesn't have a romantic bone in her body.
- 1:03:33Absolutely 9. Like if my boyfriend was like,
- 1:03:38let's go see the cherry blower. He's so sensitive.
- 1:03:41He's such an incredibly feeling individual.
- 1:03:44He's so obviously a creative. Artist.
- 1:03:47He's an artist. Like, he's sitting there by
- 1:03:50Lamplight drawing building exteriors to the tune of
- 1:03:55Christmas Tree by V. Like it is the most, like,
- 1:03:59surreal, dreamy thing you can think of.
- 1:04:03And she's over here, like, going to her marketing agency job
- 1:04:07every day. And she's like, it's pretty,
- 1:04:10it's pretty sucky, but at least it pays the bills, You know,
- 1:04:13They're two very different personalities.
- 1:04:16She's very pragmatic. And he's just not.
- 1:04:21She's like, I'm busy. And he's like, let's go see the
- 1:04:23cherry blossoms. It's the last day to see them
- 1:04:27and it, you know, I, I think if I was her, I would have
- 1:04:30obviously gone to see the cherry blossoms with my Taylor chic
- 1:04:35boyfriend. But you know, it's, she had
- 1:04:38other priorities. Their realities, like Liliana
- 1:04:41said, we're very different. But opposites attract.
- 1:04:45But he did make her feel small and she had a crazy inferiority
- 1:04:48complex that she could not shake in her younger years.
- 1:04:53So I like that she talks about her job, though in episode 6,
- 1:04:58she says it's not demanding enough to challenge me and not
- 1:05:01exactly fun either. So basically saying she's
- 1:05:06unfulfilled working this dull job, which is I think what he
- 1:05:09was getting at when they were younger.
- 1:05:12And she would say, oh, I just need to apply for a job.
- 1:05:14I just need to get a full time job.
- 1:05:16And he was like, that's it. Because it was never going to be
- 1:05:19fulfilling for her, right? It wasn't going to fill her cup
- 1:05:24and that's what he was getting at, but he said it in a really
- 1:05:26mean way. I thought he was like, that's it
- 1:05:29anyway. Her friend though, which I wish
- 1:05:32there was more of. Her friend.
- 1:05:34The pub owner friend. Yeah, she was fun.
- 1:05:37She was. Fun.
- 1:05:37She had a great perspective and she saw right through that
- 1:05:41bitch, she said which this is the female lead quoting her
- 1:05:45friend. She says you said that.
- 1:05:47My eyes looked empty and soulless.
- 1:05:49There was nothing in them. And I was like, oh, have you
- 1:05:54ever had a friend tell you your eyes were soulless?
- 1:05:57That's. Pretty.
- 1:05:57No, and I hope I don't. That is a crazy ass friend.
- 1:06:01And then she's so friends with her.
- 1:06:03And she was talking about the look in his eyes when he was
- 1:06:06doing the art at the exhibition at the opening of that like
- 1:06:10building or whatever the hell, and she was saying his eyes were
- 1:06:13so animated. They were so full of life.
- 1:06:15You could feel all this passion that he had and she was jealous.
- 1:06:20And she says while he was working on improving himself,
- 1:06:23there I was, stagnant and busy making ends meet with the
- 1:06:28soulless eyes of mine. Yep, even I would think I'm
- 1:06:31pathetic. So she was having a little pity
- 1:06:33party, but she was on to something with that.
- 1:06:37Even though he was a bum in their younger years and he had
- 1:06:41no drive, no passion for any money making endeavor, he did
- 1:06:46end up turning his passion into a career and he is incredibly
- 1:06:52fulfilled, passionate about what he does everyday.
- 1:06:57So I thought that that was really a tangible moment where
- 1:07:01she was like, wow, I need to work on myself.
- 1:07:04Yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 1:07:06I love character growth. Yeah, I like that.
- 1:07:11I think at the end of episode 6, which I guess I had a lot of
- 1:07:13notes for, episode 6, he goes to her house and she's a little bit
- 1:07:18drunk. After having this like
- 1:07:19revelation that she's so unfulfilled with her day job.
- 1:07:23He basically asks her how she's doing.
- 1:07:25He's like genuinely like, how are you doing?
- 1:07:28And it makes her cry. Yeah, because.
- 1:07:31She probably doesn't remember the last time somebody else did
- 1:07:34that. And like actually meant it.
- 1:07:38And I feel like that's such a relatable thing to real life,
- 1:07:42isn't it? Because people, a lot of people
- 1:07:45in your life will ask how are you doing, but they don't
- 1:07:47actually mean how are you doing? Like genuinely, how are you
- 1:07:52doing? Tell me.
- 1:07:53And that's a real there's a difference.
- 1:07:55There's definitely a difference. So I think him asking and
- 1:08:00specifically coming from him, it was like, especially after her
- 1:08:05having all of these realizations throughout the episode, she's
- 1:08:08just like, I can sort of break down.
- 1:08:11She feels free enough to sort of break down in front of him.
- 1:08:15And I think that's such a big moment.
- 1:08:17Yeah. She's also drunk.
- 1:08:18True, true. She's also drunk.
- 1:08:21But even saying that, it's still like for her to be able to do
- 1:08:26that, to be even a little bit vulnerable, was really good to
- 1:08:30see, I think. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:08:33I'm going to skip ahead to episode 8, which is the before
- 1:08:38sunset episode. And what happens is there's this
- 1:08:42random sun shower. It's a vacation episode where
- 1:08:45they rent the house in the forest and again random sun
- 1:08:51shower and he shows up to rescue her with an umbrella and they
- 1:08:55finally kiss in the rain. But this you need to like set up
- 1:09:01this kiss scene because this cinnamon.
- 1:09:03Scene OK send them to me. So first of all, I feel like
- 1:09:08they've been building this tension for episodes now.
- 1:09:13And I feel like this is where it all blows up.
- 1:09:16And it is a culmination of ridiculously good acting in this
- 1:09:20scene. And the directing in this is a
- 1:09:24chef's kiss. The fact that they're like kind
- 1:09:28of almost arguing. And they are, you know, they
- 1:09:32kind of step closer. And he, she says to him, do you
- 1:09:36want me to go? And she repeats it a couple of
- 1:09:40times. You're like, do you want me to
- 1:09:41go? And he does not reply.
- 1:09:43Like he just kisses her. And it's the first time.
- 1:09:46Not only that, we see that kiss. We see every single before was
- 1:09:51in a montage and it's so, so unique.
- 1:09:55I had never really seen anything like that.
- 1:09:58You know, you have the crooning in the background and I'm just
- 1:10:01like, Oh my God, I, I this to me is one of the best scenes in the
- 1:10:07whole show. It is the scene that I come back
- 1:10:10to and then as soon as I remember our beloved summer,
- 1:10:14that's the scene I remember because it is just so incredibly
- 1:10:18well shot. The rain shower.
- 1:10:21It is perfect because you have the culmination of the rain with
- 1:10:24the sun with them, with the OST. It is just stunning, like stun.
- 1:10:29It is a honestly one of my favorite scenes in the whole
- 1:10:32show. I agree, it was so beautiful, so
- 1:10:35well done. They purposely left out the
- 1:10:37kissing. That's what I was just going to
- 1:10:39say because. Every single flashback, like we
- 1:10:42are seeing these parts, but we're we're just seeing these
- 1:10:45parts and that's what we're taking them in.
- 1:10:47But then we see every single flashback, every single scene
- 1:10:51that we saw. There's like a tender, beautiful
- 1:10:53kiss that they omitted. From us.
- 1:10:56So we wouldn't know that that's what if they like we're
- 1:10:59bickering and arguing and then they they have a kiss
- 1:11:01afterwards. We we didn't see that.
- 1:11:02We just saw the bickering and now we're starting to see this
- 1:11:06love that they erased from all those Smash backs, which is
- 1:11:10rude, but also it was such an amazing.
- 1:11:13You kind of had a feeling that they were there.
- 1:11:15Phenomenal. Yeah, you.
- 1:11:18Kind of had a feeling that they were there, but like it was
- 1:11:21something else to see them all together in that montage, just
- 1:11:24one after the other. And it is like coming to me.
- 1:11:27It was like coming home, you know, like for them to, they
- 1:11:32haven't touched each other in that way in like 5 years or
- 1:11:35something like that. They're now grown different
- 1:11:37stages in their lives and they have all this drama, all these
- 1:11:39things left unsaid and then they just kiss and it's like comes
- 1:11:42flooding back. It has to be similar for them,
- 1:11:46the characters, this experience that we are getting as the
- 1:11:50audience that like they're trying to push all of these
- 1:11:53intimate moments outside of their brains and not remember
- 1:11:57all the good things, all the good parts of their relationship
- 1:12:00because they're mad at each other and they're petty and, you
- 1:12:03know, they're just flawed people.
- 1:12:05But as soon as they let go and you get this kiss in the rain
- 1:12:09and all of these beautiful little kissings come back and
- 1:12:12it's so tender and again, like the smell of youth all over it.
- 1:12:16It's beautiful, beautiful. The shift in the show, it's like
- 1:12:20the biggest, I would say it's like the biggest shift in their
- 1:12:24relationship and it's like a damn breaking all at once, I
- 1:12:28think. Yeah.
- 1:12:30That's so yeah. I I I Honestly it is one of my
- 1:12:34favorite. Scenes really powerful, Really
- 1:12:36powerful scene. Really powerful editing that
- 1:12:38they did there. He basically friend zones her
- 1:12:42after that. Oh my God and how petty she is
- 1:12:45with that is my favorite. It was so fun to watch her be
- 1:12:49petty like. I agree she was like challenging
- 1:12:52him and calling his bluff on being friends and staying over
- 1:12:55his house and stuff and he loved it.
- 1:12:58He loved her being there. Something that stuck out to me
- 1:13:01and I'll remember it forever is when she leaves in episode 10.
- 1:13:06She leaves the house finally. He tells her if you leave now
- 1:13:09you can still catch the bus and he gives her the bus number and
- 1:13:12tells her not to walk home because it's already dark
- 1:13:14outside. It's late and she goes outside
- 1:13:17and he immediately turns on all the exterior lights for her on
- 1:13:21the House and then rushes to the window to see her walk down the
- 1:13:26street and make sure that she's OK.
- 1:13:27I like lost it. I like lost it.
- 1:13:30It was so cute. It's like these little thing,
- 1:13:33these little tiny moments, that little things.
- 1:13:37Like when he's like, oh, I she's like, I'm going to stay longer
- 1:13:42and he's like, oh, I have nothing to do today.
- 1:13:44And then his person calls him, he's like, you have an interview
- 1:13:47you have to go to. And he said, cancel it.
- 1:13:48Right now. He's like, Nope, nothing to do
- 1:13:51nothing because he just wants to spend time with her.
- 1:13:54But they just, they're both so I don't even know, guarded.
- 1:13:58They just, you know, they don't want to get hurt again.
- 1:14:01They just don't want to admit that they still have those
- 1:14:04feelings. It takes like a really big push
- 1:14:06for them to finally do that. And I think also they just don't
- 1:14:10want to be the first to admit it.
- 1:14:12That's why neither of them, neither of them are ready to
- 1:14:15take that step in that, you know, in that point.
- 1:14:20So yeah. Yeah, like he just is so whipped
- 1:14:23for her. So whipped.
- 1:14:25So whipped. I will say this show does
- 1:14:29something that I really, really appreciated with like NJ's
- 1:14:33character because we've talked about like our main, but like
- 1:14:36specifically with her. Yeah, the K pop star.
- 1:14:39That's in the K pop star. The thing that I really enjoyed
- 1:14:44was, I think episode 10, I'm just checking.
- 1:14:47Yeah, episodes 10 is when like, obviously they have this rumour
- 1:14:53that, you know, he's dating her and they have like this candle
- 1:14:57and whatnot. And that kind of shakes you on
- 1:15:01Sue a little bit because she's like, oh, there is other people
- 1:15:05that really appreciate him and see him for what he is.
- 1:15:08But what I appreciated was the scene that so she's in his house
- 1:15:12and NJ kind of comes over and they have this conversation and
- 1:15:18you think she's going to say, yeah, you said you think she
- 1:15:22like NJ is going to say that they're dating, that she could
- 1:15:25just lay back on that. And then you see, you know, in
- 1:15:28the epilogue or a little bit later, you see her saying,
- 1:15:31that's what I thought I wanted to say, but I'm not going to say
- 1:15:36that because that's giving him like, he would love for us to be
- 1:15:39fighting about him. And that's not what we're going
- 1:15:42to do. Like, let's not fight about him.
- 1:15:44And I really, really appreciated that because that could have
- 1:15:48gone in such a different direction.
- 1:15:51NJ was like being the bigger person at every step of the way
- 1:15:56and being. Truthful.
- 1:15:59Yeah. First, it was a little blunt.
- 1:16:01Like at first she was just a very blunt character.
- 1:16:05I will never forget her introduction where she's like
- 1:16:08I'm used to being everyone being excited when I show up
- 1:16:11unannounced. Yeah, cuz she came to the. 1st
- 1:16:13for me, yeah. And I'm like, I don't know, but
- 1:16:16I, you know, we can appreciate someone that, you know, can be
- 1:16:20honest in the end and get some character development.
- 1:16:23Yeah, I also like the scene where she has that boot camp or
- 1:16:28the malicious commenters. That was yes, that was a
- 1:16:32beautiful like just seeing all of that because we get to see a
- 1:16:37side of her, you know, we never we never saw.
- 1:16:41All these people trying to get out of charges, You know, in
- 1:16:46Korea, it's illegal to post malicious comments about
- 1:16:50celebrities. They will take legal action
- 1:16:53against you. And she was like, Oh, well,
- 1:16:55maybe if I rub elbows with these people and they see that I'm
- 1:16:58like a genuine person and we do some, like, community service
- 1:17:01together, they will learn the error of their ways.
- 1:17:04And I can drop the charges and, you know, spare them, give them
- 1:17:08some rehab, basically character building rehab.
- 1:17:12And it was not what she intended.
- 1:17:15Like, they were not learning from their mistakes.
- 1:17:18They were still really awful. And I love that she's like,
- 1:17:22well, prepare to be sued. Like, Oh well.
- 1:17:25Yeah, I didn't mean beautiful in that way.
- 1:17:27I'm like the fact that she, you know, it's hard to know that,
- 1:17:32like, these people aren't going to change.
- 1:17:33But I think she really needed to see that because otherwise she'd
- 1:17:36be thinking, oh, well, if they just met me, they'd like me.
- 1:17:39But that's just not the case. Not everyone's going to like
- 1:17:41you. And I think she, she needed to
- 1:17:43see that. But it was nice for her to,
- 1:17:45like, stand her ground, but also got to see that character depth
- 1:17:49of her. Absolutely.
- 1:17:51She's vicious and I was all for it because I was like, why give
- 1:17:54them even a shot? Like just sue their asses.
- 1:17:57That's me personally. But anyway, especially if I had
- 1:18:00like an agency that was footing the bill, Just sue them.
- 1:18:04I what's I got to do with the price of tea?
- 1:18:07So he runs into the grandma and she gives him a little spiel of,
- 1:18:11you know, don't blame my yon SU, like if she's cruel or selfish
- 1:18:18or she's mean to you. Our family was poor.
- 1:18:20My family was poor. So I taught her to be selfish.
- 1:18:23And his response like through me, I had to pause a show.
- 1:18:26He said she's so brilliant. It's like I don't deserve her.
- 1:18:31Like if it's not that I don't want it.
- 1:18:36He is so. Sweet on her, Yeah, He loves her
- 1:18:40so much. I know.
- 1:18:41And this is the episode where they finally just lay it all on
- 1:18:45the table. She says I can't be friends with
- 1:18:47you, like we're not going to do that.
- 1:18:50And he says I really miss you. Ku Kun Su, I always missed you.
- 1:18:55When you came back into my life, I kept feeling angry for some
- 1:18:57reason, even though you were finally back, I resented you so
- 1:19:01much. But I think I know the reason
- 1:19:02now. I guess it was because I wanted
- 1:19:05to see you love me. I wanted to see you love only
- 1:19:08me. Keep loving me.
- 1:19:10Don't let me go. Keep loving me.
- 1:19:12I beg you. Oh my God.
- 1:19:15Smitten. This is episode 11, yes.
- 1:19:20And also, can we just touch on the fact that this show, there's
- 1:19:25something really well and that is like symbolism and they kind
- 1:19:30of tell his story through like the little dog from the the
- 1:19:34corner shop and how the dog never wanted to go outside
- 1:19:40anything. Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 1:19:42And I thought, I thought personally, that was really
- 1:19:45great symbolism for him because he then goes back and he sees
- 1:19:49that the dog just needed time to grow.
- 1:19:51And that's exactly what he needs.
- 1:19:53He just needs like a little bit of courage to kind of, you know,
- 1:19:56reach out for what he wants. So I I thought that was, you
- 1:20:01know, really, really well done for for episode 11.
- 1:20:05And obviously that's the. The episode that we also get
- 1:20:08some of his. Abandonment.
- 1:20:11Yeah, abandonment. And like, it really hits her why
- 1:20:15the breakup truly tore into him. And you know why he needs to be
- 1:20:21constantly reminded that people are there, so to speak.
- 1:20:26Yeah, in episode 12, which is called Begin Again, which Begin
- 1:20:32Again, like if you actually watch these movies, you're kind
- 1:20:34of like, this has nothing. This doesn't really.
- 1:20:37They just like the title. So anyway, Begin Again.
- 1:20:40I love the moment when he kisses her on the floor in the street,
- 1:20:43which ill #1 and awe #2 because I love how we see all of their
- 1:20:50past kisses Again, really tender moment where she is trying to
- 1:20:54comfort him. He's having like a little
- 1:20:56breakdown in the street and finally telling her that, you
- 1:20:59know, he was abandoned as a child and he's had nightmares,
- 1:21:03you know, ever since he was a child about this abandonment.
- 1:21:07And I love when they're back at his house.
- 1:21:10She says she doesn't know how to comfort him.
- 1:21:12She's like, I don't know how to make you feel any better.
- 1:21:14But he says she's doing it right now.
- 1:21:16She's helping him right now, just being with him and
- 1:21:18listening to him. And it's such a picture of
- 1:21:22intimacy between them because his head is on her lap, their
- 1:21:25hands are entwined, and she's stroking his head almost like a
- 1:21:30mother would. Like, she's very kind of
- 1:21:32motherly to him in a couple of moments in the show.
- 1:21:35And it's super, super intimate. I love this picture of them.
- 1:21:39And this is when he says, like, I can't sleep usually because
- 1:21:41he's been struggling with insomnia the whole show, except
- 1:21:45when she's by his side, which I think bothered the MDL reviewer.
- 1:21:50But you know, she's the source of comfort for him.
- 1:21:54It's not just that as well. He's codependent on her.
- 1:21:58No, it's just that he feels safe.
- 1:22:01He feels safe to be able to, for like when we sleep, it's when
- 1:22:07we're our most vulnerable. So obviously if you're
- 1:22:10surrounded by somebody who you trust completely and you feel
- 1:22:15safe with, sleeping is going to be much easier.
- 1:22:19So I understand where they come from.
- 1:22:22And like that is what happens in a relationship in general.
- 1:22:26Like in real life, you're going to feel way safer sleeping next
- 1:22:29to the person you love and you find comfort in and you find
- 1:22:33safety in. Then you are sleeping by
- 1:22:37yourself. I think it just makes sense.
- 1:22:39Like I don't understand where that comment was coming from.
- 1:22:42It just make to me it just made sense.
- 1:22:47I agree. Yeah, I love this episode
- 1:22:50because he couldn't wait for their weekend date.
- 1:22:52So he shows up on her walkthrough of this seaside
- 1:22:56Convention Center, this Art Center.
- 1:22:57I don't even know what it is, but her face when she sees him
- 1:23:03and then him like turning around.
- 1:23:04He was hiding. He was so cute.
- 1:23:05And then he like kind of turns around and you see his sheepish
- 1:23:09face and the slow MO walk over. Taiwo chic looks really good in
- 1:23:14my notes. I have in all caps like the two
- 1:23:20corn dog scene that's. That's my favorite.
- 1:23:23It's so cute because she's I think she kisses him on the
- 1:23:26cheek and he's like holding 2 hot 2 corn dogs, one in each
- 1:23:30hand and he asked her to hold a corn dog.
- 1:23:33He's like, hey, like hold a corn dog.
- 1:23:34I'm like dying to like hold you right now basically.
- 1:23:38And she's like, no, she plays Felicia's.
- 1:23:40No. So he transfers 1 corn dog to
- 1:23:44the other hand and grabs her by the waist for this free hand and
- 1:23:47pulls her in for a kiss. And I just think it's again
- 1:23:49like, sue me. It's really cute.
- 1:23:51He's a romantic, I know. I can't.
- 1:23:55I can't. It's just life, like just living
- 1:23:58their life. She tries to change for him I
- 1:24:02think in the next episode, which is the Love Actually episode.
- 1:24:05She does all these things to like spice up their
- 1:24:07relationship, change her personality, be different so
- 1:24:10that they won't keep fighting like they did before which
- 1:24:13initiated their ultimate breakup.
- 1:24:15She's wearing cutesy clothes, laughing at everything he says,
- 1:24:18which doesn't make sense. And it's this very shallow idea
- 1:24:23of love that her Co worker gave to her because the Co worker is
- 1:24:27younger and she's like, yeah, this is what I do to like hang
- 1:24:30on to a man. And the female lead is self
- 1:24:33aware. She says, like I, I nag you a
- 1:24:35lot and we know each other really well.
- 1:24:38I don't want it to be boring or predictable being together.
- 1:24:42But sometimes relationships are boring and predictable.
- 1:24:45That's the that's the whole point.
- 1:24:46And I think she learns that obviously, because he's like,
- 1:24:49what the hell are you doing? He's like, what the hell are you
- 1:24:50doing? What's going on?
- 1:24:51What's this character that you're doing?
- 1:24:53And he responds to her, but that person doesn't know you.
- 1:24:56There are so many people like you who are always different
- 1:24:59each time. You always feel new and
- 1:25:03different. You're different from when I saw
- 1:25:04you yesterday. And I'm like, Oh my God, just
- 1:25:07stop. It's too much.
- 1:25:10It's like a sack of puppies. Just cuteness overload.
- 1:25:14He says, I like you for who you are.
- 1:25:16I know. I like that you always have new
- 1:25:18things to nag about. They're so cute.
- 1:25:21They're so cute, yeah. Do you guys have any other
- 1:25:23favorite moments or things that you want to chat about before I
- 1:25:28get to the second melding? I think I talked about them all.
- 1:25:31Yeah, I think I I covered everything that I wanted to
- 1:25:34cover. I don't necessarily like the
- 1:25:36cliched like in the final two episodes, like the grandmother
- 1:25:40gets sick on the night of his exhibition.
- 1:25:44Hate that? Oh my God, with the art gallery
- 1:25:46I hated that they have a two year time jump.
- 1:25:50Is it necessary? No, but there is a standard
- 1:25:54happy ending and then I think they get greenlit for another
- 1:25:58documentary about their married life, which who is not going to
- 1:26:00press play on that if it was like a real thing.
- 1:26:03True. What did you guys think of the
- 1:26:04second MO lead and did you have any complaints about him?
- 1:26:08Because I felt like he was the weakest link of the whole show.
- 1:26:11I agree. Like this time around, this time
- 1:26:15around, I was just like, I don't really care.
- 1:26:19I'm so sorry that you have a sappy sad story.
- 1:26:22I'm really sorry that, you know, you keep comparing like you have
- 1:26:26an inferiority complex because I think that's what he had.
- 1:26:31This man, our male lead, like he treats you like a brother, like
- 1:26:35literally he shares everything with you.
- 1:26:38And I can also kind of understand where this guy was
- 1:26:42coming from because he was like, well, yeah, he shares it with
- 1:26:44me, but it's never truly mine. But the male, he just like
- 1:26:47openly shares stuff with him, like even his parents.
- 1:26:51He's so giving. It's like how how can you sort
- 1:26:55of? And he never really hates on him
- 1:26:57or anything like that, but I just found him.
- 1:27:01I don't know. I could take him or leave him if
- 1:27:04that makes sense. Like he does nothing for me in
- 1:27:07the show. He's just pining for his best
- 1:27:10friend's girlfriend slash ex-girlfriend.
- 1:27:13And I'd like I understand, you know, he probably feels guilty
- 1:27:17about it, but like at a point it just gets really, I didn't enjoy
- 1:27:22watching his scenes because it's like, dude, just get over.
- 1:27:26Like I can't handle this right now.
- 1:27:28Like. It's so tedious to watch the
- 1:27:31second melee, especially on this rewatch.
- 1:27:33I was like, oh, I am not driving with this man at all.
- 1:27:37I thought there was something annoying about the way that
- 1:27:40Kim's long trial played it. I thought he had zero
- 1:27:43personality. There was nothing there at all.
- 1:27:48And they sort of like write it in a little bit that both the
- 1:27:52second male lead and the male lead tune are like very similar
- 1:27:57in that they both are kind of stoic.
- 1:28:01They're not kind of active participants in life and all
- 1:28:05this stuff. Once he gets a girlfriend, which
- 1:28:08is Jones to the female lead, like they diverge.
- 1:28:11They have totally different ways of going about life and I just
- 1:28:17didn't like at all the way that Jiang was constantly stuck being
- 1:28:25in love with the male, with the male lead, with the female lead.
- 1:28:29Plot twist plot. Twist in love with the male
- 1:28:32lead. That would have been a great Oh
- 1:28:34my God. That would have been a really.
- 1:28:36Great, that would have been a great plot twist if he was
- 1:28:38actually in love with. But they have all of these
- 1:28:42moments that I thought deepened their relationship between the
- 1:28:46boys, which is really unusual for male relationships.
- 1:28:50I thought where almost like a love and basketball kind of.
- 1:28:55Have you guys seen that movie No Love and Basketball?
- 1:28:58I haven't OK. But you would love love and
- 1:29:01basketball, Becky. Oh yeah.
- 1:29:04I'll write it down. Right, yes, you would definitely
- 1:29:06enjoy love and basketball. But anyway, that's a throwback
- 1:29:08sports romance from like the late 90s, I think.
- 1:29:12But anyway, that in that sense where these two people are
- 1:29:16neighbors in this show, Cheung the mildly just like inherently
- 1:29:21knows when he needs to chat when Teung like needs a buddy to hear
- 1:29:27him out. And they have like, this montage
- 1:29:30scene of him sleeping over them, chatting into the night and then
- 1:29:35like, giggling and like, just having this really deep
- 1:29:39relationship that I thought wasn't so deep in execution.
- 1:29:44Yeah, yeah, because the whole time, I mean, he's literally,
- 1:29:48he's stuck in the past. Just.
- 1:29:50I don't even know if I'd call it love or like admiration.
- 1:29:54It's just a weird pie name that he's just, he just wants.
- 1:29:59I don't even know what he wants but it's annoying.
- 1:30:01Yeah, like, I don't get it. I don't get it.
- 1:30:04After all of these years, you're saying you haven't gotten over
- 1:30:07this girl? And the fact that Yongsu has
- 1:30:10absolutely no clue that this man is head over heels in love with
- 1:30:13her or like, obsessed with her, also baffling to me.
- 1:30:17I think it just shows that she's so selfish.
- 1:30:19She only sees herself and what she cares about.
- 1:30:22She's. Clueless.
- 1:30:23She's fucking. Clueless.
- 1:30:24It makes no sense. It makes no sense how she can't
- 1:30:27pick that up. Especially that scene when she
- 1:30:30goes to see some of the footage at night in the editing room and
- 1:30:33he's kind of like, he's just like a vibrating like presence.
- 1:30:38And she is so obsessive with herself.
- 1:30:40She's very self absorbed. They go to eat afterwards and
- 1:30:42she's like, why don't you look at me?
- 1:30:45And he, my man's is struggling because he knows there's no
- 1:30:49shot. He has no shot with her.
- 1:30:52She has no clue that he has feelings for her.
- 1:30:57It's gut wrenching for the second male lead, but also what
- 1:31:00is going on in her head that she can't pick none of this up?
- 1:31:03She is very self absorbed, like she's like she can only see
- 1:31:09what's wrong. But two, the male lead does pick
- 1:31:13it up. He watches a little bit of that
- 1:31:16footage that the second male lead has edited and he's like,
- 1:31:19oh shit, my best friend is in love with my girl.
- 1:31:24He picks it up immediately. That's true.
- 1:31:27So they have like this weird deep relationship.
- 1:31:31When you see them in the same room together, you're like, but
- 1:31:34actually like, where is it? They can talk deep into the
- 1:31:38night and like, they have little sleepovers and they've been in
- 1:31:41each other's lives and they share a set of parents
- 1:31:44basically, but there's so such a chasm between them.
- 1:31:50It just felt weird. Yeah.
- 1:31:54And the second male lead just seems so obtuse again about his
- 1:31:58Co worker, the female editor like also having like a deep
- 1:32:02crush on him. Yeah, it's almost interesting
- 1:32:05because like, you know, she is clueless, but so is he.
- 1:32:08Yeah. Like what?
- 1:32:10What's going on there? I.
- 1:32:11Don't know, it's just and then I don't know.
- 1:32:13It was just very annoying. I was more interested in his
- 1:32:17relationship to the male leads family and how, you know, that
- 1:32:21was very sacred. But also he felt like it was
- 1:32:25borrowed. Yeah.
- 1:32:26We don't really like it was his 9/9.
- 1:32:30So a lot. I feel like I had so many more
- 1:32:32issues with the second male lead this time around than I did the
- 1:32:35first time around. Anyway, he finally draws her the
- 1:32:39male lead. Finally.
- 1:32:40Draws her. So that was beautiful.
- 1:32:43Yeah. It was so nice to see that.
- 1:32:45I know because it meant so much hate to see that.
- 1:32:48It did. I did enjoy the fact that they
- 1:32:51get married, but we don't see them getting married.
- 1:32:54It's just, it just sort of happens.
- 1:32:57I do actually kind of enjoy that in the grand scheme of this
- 1:33:01drama because this drama is not about those big events.
- 1:33:05It's all about the small little things that add up to a
- 1:33:08relationship. It's the everyday.
- 1:33:11So yeah, I I really actually appreciated that.
- 1:33:14Yeah, because things always just happen in their life.
- 1:33:17It's just almost so like their wedding just happened and us not
- 1:33:20seeing it. I mean, it makes sense.
- 1:33:22Yeah, but that's the end of my notes.
- 1:33:25I don't really have anything else to add to our beloved
- 1:33:27summer. It was a nice, pleasant watch.
- 1:33:30I watched it like one or two episodes a day until I was done.
- 1:33:35Same, same. Nice.
- 1:33:37Well, actually I binged a lot of it.
- 1:33:39Oh. Yesterday I did binge.
- 1:33:42You guys, I have a confession to make.
- 1:33:44Oh. Oh oh.
- 1:33:47In my rewatch, I did not get very far.
- 1:33:50I didn't. This is all muscle, this is all
- 1:33:52memory. When I say I didn't get very
- 1:33:55far, I think I got to episode 3, but I remember so much of it.
- 1:33:58But you've rewatched it many times.
- 1:34:01Five times. This was the first time I've
- 1:34:04rewatched it so I really. Need yes, the first time you
- 1:34:07heard. Yes, the first time I've
- 1:34:09rewatched it. I watched it in dub because I
- 1:34:12was trying to like get another listen.
- 1:34:15I was I I regret, I regret it, but I had so much other like I
- 1:34:19was like, I can't, but also I don't want because because you
- 1:34:23know, so first of all, it's terrible because all of the male
- 1:34:27voices sound the same every single like like our male leads
- 1:34:31talking to his best friend. He's like, hey, man, what's
- 1:34:34going on? I don't know, man, not.
- 1:34:36Much and I'm like. You guys are the same person and
- 1:34:39I'm going to scream. But then I tried watching it
- 1:34:42speed up because I thought that would be helpful.
- 1:34:45Not in dub, you know, but then that was just really not.
- 1:34:48So that's my confession. I did rewatch it, but I also
- 1:34:52I've watched it way too many times to a point where it's just
- 1:34:55like, you know. Becky, no one's going to come
- 1:34:57for you with a pitchfork over this.
- 1:34:59It's fine. It's fine.
- 1:35:02But it's it's I still I still love the drama.
- 1:35:06I just definitely think, yeah, I don't the second male lead as
- 1:35:10soon as I saw him on the screen and he paused the video and he's
- 1:35:13just looking at her. I'm.
- 1:35:14Like on Under the Hood. Go away like why are you even
- 1:35:18admiring her like that? Like you guys don't even have a
- 1:35:21any type of what she said hi to you once.
- 1:35:24Ah I can't but I still like the drama a lot.
- 1:35:28But also this is me just telling everyone don't ever watch a show
- 1:35:31in dub. Don't watch a show in dub.
- 1:35:34Even if you have to multitask, even if you have like other,
- 1:35:37don't do it do. That to the drama.
- 1:35:39It'll ruin your life. I thought that was kind of
- 1:35:43engraved in people not to watch stuff in dub.
- 1:35:46OK, I have my attention span when it comes to like I've been
- 1:35:51watching Prisoner of Beauty and that's like really, you know,
- 1:35:54like action. So when it comes to like slower
- 1:35:57shows, I still haven't checked out the best thing.
- 1:36:00I still haven't checked out any of like the slower slice of life
- 1:36:03dramas because I just can't. I have to be multitasking or it
- 1:36:06has to be super riveting for me to pay attention to it, which
- 1:36:10means I need to fix my attention.
- 1:36:12Span I'm That's another thing that we all need to fix our
- 1:36:15intention spans. We're all screwed because of
- 1:36:18social media and scrolling on TikTok and like double timing
- 1:36:22everything we want. Scrolling.
- 1:36:23My God, dumb scrolling. All right, all right, anyway,
- 1:36:28we'll continue this offline. Thank you so much for coming on
- 1:36:31the show and for talking about our beloved summer and
- 1:36:34rewatching 3 episodes. Becky, I really appreciate it.
- 1:36:37I knew you were going to come for me.
- 1:36:39You said you weren't going to judge.
- 1:36:42I'm not. Just faked it.
- 1:36:44I could have faked it all but I appreciate you guys and I wanted
- 1:36:48to be honest I. Super careless when I can't re
- 1:36:51watch a show or I re watch it on double time or what have you.
- 1:36:55It's just hard. It's.
- 1:36:56Just doesn't catch. You're fine.
- 1:36:59Just doesn't catch. Also, this is this is not her
- 1:37:02being you should see when she gets judged.
- 1:37:05Yes, this is. Definitely a little more biting.
- 1:37:09No, I'm being really. Yeah.
- 1:37:11Playful and facetious. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:14Yeah, yeah. Don't worry about it.
- 1:37:15Don't worry about it. Becky.
- 1:37:17Where can people find you online?
- 1:37:18Oh gosh, so I have a TikTok and Instagram, Don't sue Rebecca,
- 1:37:23and I have a podcast that has been on hiatus accidentally for
- 1:37:27eight months called Drama Detours, but if you wanna check
- 1:37:32it out, you can. Liliana, where can we find you
- 1:37:36online? So you can find T and Soju
- 1:37:41podcast on Spotify, Apple podcasts, Amazon Music, wherever
- 1:37:45you get your podcasts. And then for the socials, it's T
- 1:37:50and Soju podge, all one word on, you know, Instagram, TikTok,
- 1:37:54blue sky. I think that's it.
- 1:37:58Thank you, guys. Thanks again for going down
- 1:38:00memory lane with me, our beloved summer.
- 1:38:03That's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 1:38:06the Tabak Here Rambles podcast.
