- 0:00The physical consciousness is the primary seat of the guna of
- 0:04tamas in the being in general, and thus when the waking
- 0:09consciousness of the mental and vital levels is in abeyance
- 0:12during sleep, there is a natural tendency for the tamasic energy
- 0:17to come forward for a time. One of the first questions to
- 0:21arise is what happens to the mental and vital consciousness
- 0:25during sleep. Some speculate that they simply
- 0:29go into a state of inactivity or lesser activity.
- 0:33What we can say is that the sleep state tends ordinarily to
- 0:38remove the self-awareness. When the consciousness is active
- 0:44and outward focused, our brain waves tend to operate at a
- 0:47certain frequency, generally called beta waves with a cycle
- 0:52of between 12 and 30 Hertz. As we move the awareness inwards
- 0:58and calm these waves, the next cycle, called alpha waves, takes
- 1:04over with a frequency range of 8 to 12 Hertz.
- 1:08Next come Theta waves with a lower frequency between 4:00 and
- 1:128:00 Hertz. Delta waves at .5 to 4 Hertz are
- 1:18characteristic of periods of deep sleep.
- 1:22Dream states tend to vibrate at ranges between alpha and beta.
- 1:26For the most part, although still mostly absent in dreams,
- 1:30is the conscious interactive awareness of the waking state.
- 1:35Gamma waves from 30 Hertz to 100 Hertz are evident in highly
- 1:41focused concentration and cognition.
- 1:44Lucid dreaming may also share some oscillations in the gamma
- 1:49wave range. Meditation tends to range
- 1:53between the alpha and Theta brain waves, while those who are
- 1:57highly developed in meditation may exhibit gamma wavelength
- 2:02activity. The activity of the dream state
- 2:05appears to be a transcription of impressions either being
- 2:09processed from the waking state or from some access to mental or
- 2:14vital planes that are the natural seat of the mental and
- 2:17vital consciousness we integrate into our waking self-awareness
- 2:22to some degree. With an overview of the various
- 2:26states of consciousness, their characteristic brain wave
- 2:30activity, and the interaction between these different States
- 2:34and the various planes of existence, we can begin to
- 2:38understand the role of sleep as we move consciousness out to
- 2:42other realms and let the body and the subconscious action of
- 2:46the being work to restore balance, reduce tension, and
- 2:51provide the opportunity to heal and replenish the body's energy.
- 2:57To become conscious in sleep then, involves the ability to
- 3:01create links and a transcriptive ability between these different
- 3:05realms. Lucid dreaming and certain
- 3:09states of meditation seem to create such bridges and may
- 3:13signal a way forward for sadhna during sleep.
- 3:17Many people describe dreams that are not just random or
- 3:21archetypal events, but which have them dealing with vital
- 3:25beings or mental constructs in a different way than the waking
- 3:29consciousness while maintaining the awareness of their self
- 3:33identity. Some describe meeting with
- 3:36spiritual teachers or guides during the sleep state or in
- 3:39dreams, and these experiences may carry over into the waking
- 3:45state either with conscious remembrance or as a subconscious
- 3:50impression that impacts their external waking experience.
- 3:56In today's world, another factor can impact all of these states
- 4:00of awareness, and that is the prevalence of electronic devices
- 4:05and the stimulation they provide through radiation of various
- 4:09frequencies and wavelengths. These can be highly disruptive
- 4:14of the natural patterns influencing an individual's
- 4:18ability to sleep at all, or by disturbing the cycles that sleep
- 4:22creates throughout the period of sleep.
- 4:26It is recommended to shut down use of these devices at least
- 4:30several hours before the time of sleep to reduce their disruptive
- 4:35impacts. Those who are practicing
- 4:39spiritual sadhna can also prepare for their time of sleep
- 4:43through practicing meditation, prayer or remembrance, so that
- 4:49they carry that state into the realm of sleep, which keeps them
- 4:53centered and helps to avoid the disruptions that can occur when
- 4:58chaotic energies or temasic influences predominate.
- 5:04Srioro Bindu observes Quote. The consciousness in the night
- 5:08almost always descends below the level of what one has gained by
- 5:12sadhna in the waking consciousness, unless there are
- 5:16special experiences of an uplifting character in the time
- 5:20of sleep, or unless the yogic consciousness acquired is so
- 5:24strong in the physical itself as to counteract the pull of the
- 5:29subconscient inertia. In ordinary sleep, the
- 5:33consciousness in the body is that of the subconscient
- 5:36physical, which is a diminished consciousness, not awake and
- 5:40alive like the rest of the being.
- 5:43The rest of the being stands back and part of its
- 5:46consciousness goes out into other plains and regions and has
- 5:50experiences which are recorded in dreams such as that you have
- 5:55related. You say you go to very bad
- 5:58places and have experiences like the one you narrate, but that is
- 6:03not a sign necessarily of anything wrong in you.
- 6:08It merely means that you go into the vital world as everybody
- 6:11does, and the vital world is full of such places and such
- 6:16experiences. What you have to do is not so
- 6:20much to avoid it all going there, for it cannot be avoided
- 6:24altogether, but to go with full protection until you get mastery
- 6:29in these regions of super physical nature.
- 6:32That is one reason why you should remember the Mother and
- 6:35open to the Force before sleeping, for the more you get
- 6:39that habit and do it successfully, the more the
- 6:43protection will be with you. End Quote reference Sri
