Transcript
- 0:03[SPEAKER_03]: All right, welcome to show a season's over, I guess.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_03]: We are two great hopes that we hyped up all off season, both debuted rather miserably.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_03]: This was gonna be the year of Bill Belichick in college football.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_03]: This is gonna be the year of Arch Manning.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_03]: They'd quarter back.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_03]: Guess what, they're all in two and a pretty battle into it that.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's good run for this podcast.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_03]: We got in two episodes.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_03]: Now we're pretty well done.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_03]: We may switch to like a home gardening theme going forward.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: But we will actually, we will try to persevere.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_03]: And I will say gentlemen, I'm here with others receiving votes, sports illustrator.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm here with Jean Wajajowski and Brian Fisher.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_03]: Again, thank you for joining us.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_03]: The ratings indicate the season is not over.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_03]: 16.6 million for Texas Ohio State, which equaled the highest rating of any regular season game last year, the SEC championship between Texas and Georgia, four other games or three other games over 10 million.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_03]: So I think we're alive and well, but as we're looking for the next
- 1:26[SPEAKER_03]: Michigan, true freshman quarterback, Bryce Young, this year's archmanning from a recruiting standpoint, the number one prospect who gets his first big test this weekend looked good in the opener against New Mexico, but now they go to Oklahoma and take on the sooner's, we will pick the game later.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: But
- 1:47[SPEAKER_03]: uh... underwood in that game twenty one out of thirty one two hundred fifty one passing yards in a touchdown he looked quick he looked decisive he's got a cannon of a norm he's a big athletic guy uh... he's got a lot of stuff going for him after we murdered arch and bellichick with our expectations what now can we say what can we how can we practice safe hype for price underwood somebody help me out here
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I don't think it's over for our humanity.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure you don't either, Brian doesn't either, but I have no idea.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, at this point, do we really have any idea how Underwood's going to play?
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think if last week taught us any sort of lesson is that if you're a young quarterback and you're going on the road for the first time, it's really, really hard.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: You're right, Underwood looked really good against New Mexico at the Big House.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: But guess what, this is a new Mexico, and it's not at the big house, it's going to be at the palace, and the palace is going to do its palace kind of thing, and Brent Venables is going to throw about 10 kitchen sinks at underwood this time, and it's going to be tough on him.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: He did show a lot of poise, and he didn't make some nice throws, and I imagine they might run him a little more than they did against New Mexico.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: But it's still, you know, we'll put it this way.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: They've been playing varsity football, Pat and Brian since 1879 at Michigan.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: And they've only had four true freshman quarterbacks start a season.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: So that's not an accident that he's just starting quarterback.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: He's really good.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: And as you mentioned, the number one recruit, but this is going to be a different kind of experience for him.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I wouldn't be surprised if he has a arch-maning like moment or two or three or four in that game.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think Michigan fans are just happy that they could complete a Ford pass and it not be an entire ordeal based on what we saw.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: And that opener, given what happened last year with Alex Orgy and all the guys that took snaps for them.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: And look, this is probably less about the moment for Bryce Underwood than I think against the coordinator that he's going up against in Brent Vittables.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he is so good at putting pressure on opposing quarterback from where they don't see it number one, but also from all angles.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of veterans on that Oklahoma defense,
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: have been prined for this game.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: They've had it circled on the calendar for a while.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: They know what it means in terms of the importance on certainly that early season schedule for them.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: And look, you know, if there's one thing break-in-vitables is going to do, it's going to stop the run.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: And that's going to put even more pressure on Bryce Underwood.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: I do think the quarterback run game is going to be certainly an element.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: of this matchup that he's going to bring to the table, but that's not everything that's going to be placed on his table.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, you know, we'll see.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think the hype about Bryce Underwood is not necessarily for this game, it is not necessarily for even for this season.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: This is about building forward for Michigan, and you do like what you want to see, but he's going to end up taking his lumps.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: His every true freshman is going to do, especially in an environment like this.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: I can't wait to see it because I think this is going to kind of give us a really good indicator in terms of what is that ceiling for Michigan and ultimately kind of also what is that floor.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you guys are no fun.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, Larry Ellison's fourth wife paid 12 million dollars or whatever to get Bryce underwood in the lineup right away.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_03]: I think we need miracles.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: Come on.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: No, I'm with you completely that this is going to be a different level challenge and, and yes, Gene, if last week did teach us anything, it's like expect your young quarterback to struggle in big games, especially early in the season, which this is.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, he threw against New Mexico and I was just looking at the highlights of his passes.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he threw some great balls, but he threw a lot into traffic thrown into traffic against New Mexico and throwing in traffic against Oklahoma.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to be two different things.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_03]: So we'll see how that goes for him if he's maybe a little more.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_03]: wary about where he places is passes.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_03]: But we also have Sheryl Moore coaching this game for Michigan, which is, I think, a bonus for the Wolverines.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_03]: one of the, uh, I guess odd side effects of their very odd case and the odd NCAA ruling and everything that went into the Connor Stallion's fan dango, certainly one of the great moments in college football history, where everything that happened with content stallions, uh, and check we still haven't even gotten central Michigan punished yet for him dressing up as a central Michigan staffer.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: But the ruling that came down, so Michigan's self sanctioned before the ruling and suspended more for two games for this season.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_03]: The normal suspension is always first two games, right?
- 6:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's the way these things work.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_03]: They decided we're gonna suspend him games three and four.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_03]: The stated reasoning was hilarious.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_03]: Shoroun's an Oklahoma graduate.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_03]: It's a chance for him to go back to Norman and play against his alma mater, coach against his alma mater.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_03]: So we wanted him to have that chance.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_03]: That's touching.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: That's really, that's a lovely sentiment.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_03]: I still don't think you should get to choose your games based on where you went to school that you are suspended for NCAA violations.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_03]: The unstated reason I suspect in this is that Bryce under what they figured was going to be a starting quarterback and his first road game against a ranked SEC team, they probably had rather have his head coach there with him than not.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_03]: So that's my thoughts on that.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_03]: I found the whole thing quite funny and good for sure on that he gets to go back and
- 7:39[SPEAKER_03]: You know, dab the corners of his eyes when he hears boomer sooner.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be a lovely, lovely thing.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_03]: Brian, what do you think about the fact that Cheryl Moore is coaching in this game?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I can't believe like, you know, like you're saying, I can't believe that local home is out to Michigan is allowed to get away with this going into the local home of game.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: And look, that's going to make a force of the system itself.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: But hey, this is, this is what you do.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: I guess when you can impose your own violations and your own sanctions in the NCAA parlance.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's going to be fascinating because look, you know,
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan's undefeated with with in-term head coaches.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe it is better if if Jerome had been on the sidelines, you know, now that we think about it, I mean, they did lose five games within last year.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: So there is that factor, you know, I'm just more curious because he, you know, he is heavily involved in the offense, like how much of a difference is he really going to make on those silence, given everything a head coach has to be aware of is, is this more of a staff thing, almost.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: that there are more dedicated resources there for price under what so your quarterback's coach, you can really get down and dive into some of the details that they're going to be seeing in the game.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's probably going to be the bigger picture why Schroen is around so that he can kind of take that off of the offensive staff's plate to where he can focus on making those in-game decisions.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: When to go for it, when is third down, you know, when you're going to be aggressive, when you've got to be a little bit conservative, especially on the road against an SEC opponent, but it is, it is just, you know, I think it's, it's Michigan at its peak in terms of the hubris that they had as a university going throughout this entire process, really the entire last couple of years, but, but I think this is kind of the cherry on top in terms of seeing,
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: in terms of saying, all right, he suspended for the next game for NCA violations.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's that's just going to be a perfect encapsulation of the system at this point.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Pat, first of all, your cynicism is staggering and I love every bit of it, but yes or no, the NCA could have told Michigan to go pound sand on its dates, right?
- 9:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't know what it is.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't have a problem with Michigan trying to push the envelope
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: And they pulled it off.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: The NCAA could have said no.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, the NCAA went a step further and suspended him another game for next season when they could have done it this season.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't fall Michigan for trying.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: I love sort of the ball's attitude of it.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: The NCAA could have shut it down right away and it didn't.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: So this is what we get.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, that this was in their control, and they failed to, they did, they let Michigan dictate the terms to them, which is remarkable.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_03]: And yes, the third game suspension for next season was another mind-boggling element of this.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_03]: And Michigan is, of course, rule, they are appealing the ruling here with the NCAA, even though it's largely favorable.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_03]: and uh... we got a wonderful word salad from ward manual about how you the fact they've brought up a postseason man is ridiculous where you didn't get a postseason man you got a massive fine commensurate with a postseason man but you're allowed to play so the whole thing is hilarious to me it's not
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: The only appeal, Michigan, is launched.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_03]: J. Sean Barham, their excellent linebacker, maybe their best player, was ejected in the second half against New Mexico for targeting, so he will sit the first half of this game.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_03]: They appealed that.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_03]: Big Ten said, no, thank you.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_03]: You're out.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of people did not like the targeting injection.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_03]: If you read the rule, I think there is grounds to eject.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_03]: It is a forceful contact that had a neck area of defences player, with the head, shoulder, forearm fist.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_03]: And he did hit him with the head.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_03]: He didn't lead with the crown of the helmet, but he did.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't think it's a bad suspension.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't think it was a justifiable appeal.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to, I don't disagree, I mean, you can definitely make the argument that you should have been ejected, that it was, you know, targeting force will all those things.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: But it is that specific hit.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: it's a gray area to me.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you could argue it was a football play.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he formed tackled him.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: He turned his head at the last second.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: It had they said it wasn't targeting.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: I would have understood.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: But at this point, I don't, I don't understand half the time what's targeting what isn't anymore.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes I'm completely convinced that was targeting
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't sure, and I'm still not sure.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: But the guy who came in for him, Carl Sullivan, he had five tackles in interception and a sack.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: So they maybe they're okay for that first half.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: He played well against New Mexico.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: But again, it's New Mexico.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: Well, glad they got another appeal in there at Michigan.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: Well, all right, for as for Oklahoma, the other side of the coin here, a huge season for the sooner's Brent Venables year four years one and three, not very good.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_03]: You're too good.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_03]: needs to have a good year for here, um, they change just about everything around him going into this season.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_03]: New offensive coordinator, new quarterback, our buckle and material both come from Washington State, Benables is now calling the defense, Jim Nagy is in as, uh, general manager and they brought in a whole front office staff with him.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_03]: So they're doing everything they can,
- 13:34[SPEAKER_03]: to make Brent Minibals successful.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_03]: What is you guys' prognosis for how Oklahoma's going to do this week and this season?
- 13:46[SPEAKER_03]: We'll pick the game at the end.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_03]: We don't need to get into that, but what's the thought about Oklahoma?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_03]: This season, in long term, in the SEC, Brian.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Or are they making all these changes to make it easier for bread Metables or make it turn key to have a new person come in.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a larger question kind of hanging over this as well.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: But in terms of the here and now, I mean, you win this.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: You win the Jackson Arnold derby in a couple of weeks at home.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: We can stall burn.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: You're looking at five and oh, going into red river.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's obviously a huge game in terms of the rivalry in terms of
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: the results that Brent Minimalus has had against Texas the last couple of years.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, look, it's still a team that is, I think, capable of beating a lot of those middle of the pack or even kind of close to upper tier SEC teams.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you look at South Carolina, old Miss Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri is on that schedule.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: Those are, I think, winnable games.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: If Oklahoma plays up to their talent level that they've had, especially now that they have an offense that looks like it has a, has a pulse compared to last season.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, yes, LSU is going to be a tougher game this year, but it's not crazy to think that this could be a team that, you know, flirts with eight or nine wins, especially given how good print and print intervals has been on defense, you know, that that puts you in territory where you're kind of flirting with a playoff bit, or at least, you know, in that discussion at the end of the year, which I think where Oklahoma ultimately wants to be.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I think the bigger picture is,
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: That was all this change externally from the football program, you know, really going to affect one of the bed rocks of stability in college sports, you know, how are they going to handle having a new athletic director who's probably not going to come necessarily from the, you know, athletics world, you know, maybe more of a business sense.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's certainly that's been the talk there in Norman, being more of a business guy.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: You have a new GM in terms of Jim Nadie, as you mentioned.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: newish president who's still adapting to I think you know putting his imprint on on on the football program on at college athletics in in general so there's a lot of change and you know can this still be a team that contends for an SEC title or at least challenges to get to Atlanta come November every year you know maybe not every year but I think they can be consistent in terms of having some of those years where they are in that contention and
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: They are in that window, but I think the days of consistently winning 10 games, I think, is out the door certainly in Norman, and that's a factor of the matter based on their new conference and based on recent results that we've seen out of the program.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Brian, I don't think the seedling is eight games or nine games.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think they could win more than that this year.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: Could win more than that this year.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think I would not want to play OU this season.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think they have a incredibly talented roster.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think Benibles defense, he's calling the plays as Pat mentioned.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think that system has been in place now for a few years.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: They've got the talent to match the scheme, and they certainly have the quarterback, the Heisman Calibra quarterback now.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they're set up for success.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, that schedule does have a lot of muscle tone, but as you mentioned, there's no reason why they can't run the table early and go into red river with a lot of confidence, long term.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see why they can't be successful in an annual basis either and be a perennial CFP contender.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they have a lot of things in place now and they embraced the SEC.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: They're not scared of the SEC.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: The one thing I will say, though, is you had jokes to stick on as AD and one thing about Oklahoma and he was in place for a long time.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: They always had that stability.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: They had a president for a long time, an AD for a long time, and a head coach for a long time, and I'm talking about the Stoops era, and they've had some upheaval in recent years.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: So they were their most successful when they had that stability, and I think they're going to want to try to find a formula to replicate what they had before.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no doubt that they had the what coaches loved to call alignment, right?
- 17:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_03]: And now it's it's going to be differently aligned and I think it's going to be difficult.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_03]: I think I lay in a little more with Brian in terms of I think year and in year out being able to to be in the top.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_03]: four, five in the SEC.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_03]: I just, that's tough to do.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're talking that I would say the permanence or Texas and Georgia, I would have said Alabama, but G, we got to rethink that, but still, Alabama is not going to stay dysfunctional for long if they are indeed dysfunctional.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_03]: We won't declare that for sure after one game, but
- 18:18[SPEAKER_03]: those three Florida is not going to stay down.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_03]: Tennessee is not going to stay down.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_03]: So there's five right there.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma, can they join that group?
- 18:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, they can't.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_03]: Can they join that group consistently?
- 18:32[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_03]: It's a lot to ask.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_03]: And and it will, I think, depend
- 18:38[SPEAKER_03]: largely.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: Do you get the right coach?
- 18:40[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe Brent Venables is the right coach?
- 18:42[SPEAKER_03]: We don't know yet for sure, but if he's not, then can the next guy be the right coach?
- 18:48[SPEAKER_03]: And can you be lucky enough to get a Bob Stoops who stays for that long?
- 18:51[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that was incredible.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm not sure the Bob Stoops are still going to be part of college football going forward.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_03]: So a fascinating time's down there and I think a really interesting game.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking forward to this one because I'm not sure what to expect from either team.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_03]: I think they will both be significantly better than last year, but where that lands, I don't know.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: But do we agree the venable?
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is the Maker Break season for him.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_03]: No doubt.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_03]: Now, what is, where's the make and break line?
- 19:24[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_03]: Is it, you got to be at least.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_03]: 84, do you got to be nine and three?
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: I, I'm not sure.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_03]: I guess against the schedule that is, that is brutal.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, you're a great quarterback matchup under what against material, fascinating.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see if it's a great one, but it's fascinating for sure.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_03]: Speaking of quarterbacks, Seth Wickersham, our friend from ESPN's put out a great book American Kings on quarterbacks and how they're made and how they work and why they succeed.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_03]: Everything, a fine Missouri graduate, Seth, as well, that needs to be noted at all times.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_03]: But in there, he had something that we seen a couple of excerpts and one of them was talking to Sean Payton, who knows a thing or two about quarterbacks
- 20:15[SPEAKER_03]: when looking at drafting for what's going to succeed and Gene, you took this formula and I think you applied it to the current college game.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's scary when sports riders do math and we are mathing here, so beware.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_03]: But you got some interesting information.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_03]: Tell us what you found out.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Brian, can we just have a
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did the math.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: I actually wrote it all out here, and that's scaring itself, but yeah Seth says book is fantastic.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: I recommend it to anyone.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: But what he basically did is he went to Sean Peyton, the Denver Broncos head coach and Peyton had put together this formula that didn't necessarily
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: taken to account the positives of a quarterback instead he wanted to know what the negatives were and then how that quarterback reacted to the negativity was he able to minimize the mistakes and maximize the solutions, especially at the line of scrimmage.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_01]: And so basically it's a fairly easy formula.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: He took interceptions, sacks, and funbals divided it with the total amount of attempts, pass attempts.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: I did not include funbals.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: I checked with Seth to make sure with the formula with the results still be
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: mostly accurate, and he said that the fumble percentages were so low that it really wouldn't affect the overall outcome.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going with that.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: So just to give some context, Bonex was at 2.3%.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the lower the percentage the better.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Mahomes was at 8.1%.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: Caleb Williams was at 17.5%.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: So take Bonyx as the gold standard at 2.3%.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: Bonyx really good at 8.1%.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: So I applied it to the quarterbacks, that what the books are saying are the top 10, nine quarterbacks, nigh's been raised right now.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: You want to, either one of you want to venture a guess who came in with the lowest percentage according to Sean Payton's formula.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm using their career statistics, including week one stats.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_03]: Boy, I'm going to, it's, it's not Lenora Sellers.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_03]: It's not Garrett Nussmar at
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: He came in third at 5.5%, Brian, you want to give it a go?
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I don't know, I mean, I would say Cade Clubnik, but like, you know, he did have some turnover, especially, you know, if you're talking career numbers, you know, early in those days, especially as a freshman, like he, he had the he had a couple of turnovers.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I, I don't know about Cade Clubnik, you know, in terms of name and
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: just had a had a nice game against the no-to-dota's Carson Beck 5.2% and us came in at second at 5.4%
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: and drew our came in at third at 5.5%.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: So really respectable numbers using Sean Payton's formula, arch-maning granted not a lot of data at this point.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: But 8.0%.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Sam Levitt, number six, 9.2%.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Gunner stocked a 9.3%.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: and Lenora Sellers came in 9th, 13.6%.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: So take the number for what they are, but they are an interesting indicator of what Peyton at least deems really important when he's assessing quarterbacks.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I find it really interesting, um, the old, remember Harvey Peanick, they have the great golf coach, you said it's not how good are your good shots, it's how bad are your bad shots, and this is kind of that right like how many double bogies are you committing out there, um, and I do remember in real time, yeah, right, and, and, and I do remember Drew breeze, you know, at times saying,
- 24:45[SPEAKER_03]: and incompletions always better than a sack, anything's better than an interception or a turnover.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_03]: And so I can see that formula from Peyton Breeze fitting with these guys.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_03]: And this will be a great stat to watch as the season develops.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_03]: I think, you know, how these guys either get better or what happens when they play better competition, so forth, Carson Beck,
- 25:12[SPEAKER_03]: I've waxed and waned on him, you know, I go up and down there times I think he looks great and times I question his decision making, but clearly his decision making in these terms is not that bad.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_03]: So this will be fun to watch.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for your math, Gene.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_03]: Appreciate you.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: I sure hope it's right.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get a fact checker on your ass here.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: Good morning.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_03]: We have a huge budget on this show.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_03]: So we'll have our army of fact checkers and stats that they've got to follow up on that.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_03]: I hate to do this, but we're actually going to math some more here.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to do a little more math, or at least talk about it with the ACC.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_03]: eight versus nine game conundrum.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_03]: They are on the clock now that the the SEC is finally decided are long national nightmare of listening to them dither back and forth between whether they're going to play eight or nine games has finally ended in 2026 they're going to play nine.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_03]: So now the ACC is the last of the power conference group to to still be playing eight.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone assumes, well, they'll just go to nine to to go along with everybody else and they need the bump, but cetera, but there's problems here, the math does not math well for them, there's 17 members, you can't play a nine game schedule with 17 members and have it actually work out right.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_03]: There's the Notre Dame dynamic, they play a minimum of five games against Notre Dame every year.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_03]: What do you do with those could those be counted as conference games?
- 26:47[SPEAKER_03]: if they go to nine, some schools will play Notre Dame and some schools every year have an SEC rival that they play at the end.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_03]: Florida State Place Florida, Georgia Tech Place, Georgia, Louisville Place Kentucky, Clemson Place, South Carolina.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_03]: So how does all this work where should they end up?
- 27:10[SPEAKER_03]: ACC, there's meetings expected later this month,
- 27:14[SPEAKER_03]: AD's where I think they're going to really dig in on this and may come to a decision.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_03]: I really, I think Jim Phillips is pushing them towards a 10 power opponent schedule.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_03]: What exactly does that look like?
- 27:29[SPEAKER_03]: Does that look like eight league games plus two others?
- 27:33[SPEAKER_03]: Or is it nine plus one?
- 27:35[SPEAKER_03]: And do you end up with some playing 11?
- 27:37[SPEAKER_03]: And is that a problem?
- 27:38[SPEAKER_03]: And then are you losing home games?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_03]: Which drives eighties shiveringly into the closet?
- 27:43[SPEAKER_03]: Like we can't handle not having that home revenue.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_03]: So a lot of stake here.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure really where this is going to go, but I'm fascinated by it.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_03]: Brian, what do you think?
- 27:54[SPEAKER_03]: What do you expect?
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would be surprised at this point like you said that if the ACC in next year or two is not committed to playing 10 power four games, whether as you mentioned that mix of conference versus non-conference, I think it's going to be up for debate, but obviously math doesn't, it doesn't help them in terms of being a 17 team league.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think how you get over that hump is going to take up the vast majority of the time.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: More than anything, the ACC doesn't
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: you know in terms of all right you're the you're the loan hold out you're the guys that are only playing eight conference games and frankly they understand that look that eight conference games slate is probably not as difficult as what you're going to see in the big 12 or in the big 10 or in the SEC and so I think it's kind of taking away a bit of a data point in terms of hey we're we're still with you guys in terms of playing difficult schedule.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: We know the CFP metrics that are coming into into Vogue now that the
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: have more of an emphasis on strength of schedule, so the ACC doesn't want it held against them.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the biggest thing in terms of exploring this move, whether it's since nine games, whether it's sticking with eight, and I think there's the other component too is that they've got to make sure that they are getting rewarded if they do add conference games in terms of that money for me as a parent.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: This is the same kind of conversation and debate that the SEC had.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to do something out there for free, maybe there is a way if
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: you have more games like a Miami vs Florida, you know, Georgia Tech versus all or a Clemson vs Oregon.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: You have some of those marquee games that you can add to the schedule that can generate additional revenues.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be the name of the game for the ACC.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's ultimately probably going to drive the decision whether it is adding another conference game and we've seen even non-conference games in the ACC.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: recently, but or if it's, hey, let's get another marquee opponent on there.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's going to make life more difficult for your head coaches, but that's kind of the name of the game at this point in in terms of the race for the playoff and in generating more revenue.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's going to be key for the ACC moving forward.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: They played a conference games last year.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: How many CFP teams did they have last year?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: That too.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: Work too well.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: work pretty well.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, and they're playing, if you look at their schedules this year within the ACC, their teams are playing a lot of P4 teams.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think,
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: someone's going to have to convince me why it makes more sense to go to a 9-in-1 as opposed to staying at eight conference games and playing two more power for opponents.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: And Pat, you would know this live in Louisville.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: What a game like Louisville can tuck you just go away if they went to a 9-in-1.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that would be a disaster.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: Would some hard decisions have to be made relative to rivalries?
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: And you're also going to have to explain to me why Clemson would go for this.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_01]: And they have a little more cloud than a lot of the other teams in that conference now.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't see the logic of bumping up to nine for all the math reason that you mentioned Pat, and just from the way it's worked, it seems to be going just fine.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: So, convince me otherwise, otherwise I think you just stay at eight and go to the eight two.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I agree with you that there's a lot of reasons to stay at eight, but there's also there's peer pressure and we have seen eight versus nine used as a cudgeal to beat the SEC on the head and that's the SEC which plays, you know, is a demonstrably more difficult league.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_03]: So I agree that I think you can make a case for staying at eight as long as you make sure that everyone's schedules of minimum of ten.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_03]: The other problem with that, though.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: Is there's fewer non-conference games to schedule?
- 31:41[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, there are fewer opponents out there now that the SEC is taking away 16 of its non-conference games and made them conference games.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_03]: So a lot for them to consider, I am sure that Memphis and South Florida have an easy mathematical solution for this.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_03]: Just add us and you've got 18 teams.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_03]: There you go.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_03]: Not sure that's gonna happen, but I would imagine they'd like to offer that helpful hint.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, is this a leverage point to get a sixth game?
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know today.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: And that could be another, you know, your emotional boy.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, and that's an interesting point, too, is, you know, Notre Dame has Notre Dame's good for the league, but Notre Dame's also good for Notre Dame.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_03]: This has been good for Notre Dame, so can you leverage them to do a little bit more on behalf of the conference that they are a member of in every other sport, other than like hockey?
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: Well, there's one, I mean, isn't there like one year where they're five and another year there's six and they're going out, I mean, it fluctuates.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they will get the outside the ACC agreement is the Stanford game, which is also up for negotiation coming up.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_00]: The Climson series that they've just extended for, I think almost a decade.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that is outside the ACC agreement.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_00]: So there are kind of a pseudo-six game for Notre Dame.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: If you count some of those games in the standings, you throw in Climson and Stanford.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right, well, there's
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: There's eight.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: You can almost keep it in counter your no today games and there you go, but you know, I think it's it's going to be a fascinating debate amongst the Jocking factions in those in that 80 room in terms of and and look, they they've all just kind of come come to the table and sing Kumbaya recently in terms of agreeing on the revenue changes agreeing on all these changes.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: Now there's this other controversial topic pops up pops up.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be very curious to see what what the mood in that room is amongst those ACC 80s in terms of moving forward with with this.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the kettle's always boiling in that league, which is one of the reasons it's it's interesting and fun to follow.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_03]: I said earlier the beginning of this show that we have we have basically the season is over we've given up and that's definitely the mood in a few locations around here, but we know it's not really true or is it so we're going to do a little hold them or fold them here.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_03]: on six entities that got off to a not very good start to this season, the questions going to be, are you holding your cards with them?
- 34:05[SPEAKER_03]: Are you sticking with them?
- 34:07[SPEAKER_03]: Are you folding throwing in and giving up the hand?
- 34:10[SPEAKER_03]: Because they are done.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_03]: So the table stakes are high here.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_03]: You know, what is your what is your what is your
- 34:18[SPEAKER_03]: expectation going forward for these folks and we are going to start, of course, with arch, and the struggles he had against a really good team in Ohio State on the road.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_03]: Brian, you were there, you watched the whole thing, what do you think you're holding or folding with arch?
- 34:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm definitely holding, you know, it was funny watching him pregame warm up, you know, he was like very focused, you know, had had had a great throwing motion, like, you know, a picture perfect, all right, that's what a quarterback looks like and then, and then the lights came on and it was certainly a different story against that map of Trisha defense, but I'm still holding, I mean, keep in mind that Texas as bad as arch played, you know, overall in terms of his level still had a chance with, you know, three minutes left in the game to still win it, you know, or at least tight there at the end.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think arch will be fine.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: They will get back to putting up some good numbers.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_00]: These next couple of weeks.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_00]: The SEC slate is not as difficult as some of the others.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, they do have to go to Georgia.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I still think the internal hype around arch, I think it can still be realized.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think they will get him back on track moving forward.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's definitely a hold-in type of situation, even though maybe talking about him in the Heisman race and all that sort of stuff, we can probably fold on that in.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, obviously, sarcastic Benjamin,
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, we're holding him.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what, you can get rid of Arch Manning, give up on him after one game where they lost by seven points at Ohio State, no, of course not.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_01]: By his own admission, Arch Manning said he didn't play well.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: Sarc said he didn't play well.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: Anybody who had as a television set knows he didn't play well.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: But he has three games coming up against
- 36:06[SPEAKER_01]: to get it together.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: And he will.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_01]: And he'll be fine.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he, he's a good quarterback.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's just a young quarterback who's making his first ever road start.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: And he's making it at a really tough place.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I totally expect major improvement from him.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we're going to see a different
- 36:29[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm with you guys.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'm holding on him too.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_03]: Are they, that was a tough assignment.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_03]: As we mentioned, not just the opponent and the venue, but I did go to Ohio State practice in mid-August.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_03]: And at that practice, the defense dominated.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_03]: And I came away thinking, oh, man, Ohio State's in trouble because I'm a dumbass and I don't think of the, well, the defense actually just made the offense look bad.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_03]: I'm only thinking, oh, my gosh, the offense looks bad.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_03]: The line is overwhelmed.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_03]: Julian Sayon's not that good.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, no, their defense is great.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_03]: Their defense, their secondaries outstanding.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_03]: And the guys that they have plugged in a front look really good.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: I was surprised that the arch missed on a lot of crossing routes, including the first pass of the game, which they set up nicely, you know, waggle action, you got your layers of guys going across and he throws it three yards short in the dirt, but then he missed some other ones, including one late, a different pattern, but still those crossing routes and going both directions right in left.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's the kind of thing you can clean up easily enough, you know, that's nerves
- 37:47[SPEAKER_03]: and whatever males have factored in, but no major concerns about archmaning is a quarterback going forward.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_03]: And I think the quarterback's have evolved so well that you lose track of going back, and again, this is old guy radio here, sorry, but as a Bronco fan, watching John L.way struggle incredibly as a rookie.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he had games, he was six of 20.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_03]: He couldn't do anything right.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_03]: And Joe Montana when he played at Notre Dame would be terrible for three quarters and then pull it out in the fourth and it looked like Arch was gonna do that.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_03]: It really did.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_03]: They put it together made some big time plays there in the fourth quarter.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I covered I covered L way when he was a rookie for the Denver Post.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: an L.A.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_01]: lined up under the guard one game he did it happens man it just happens things and it was on the road it was against Baltimore it just happens to the very best of them didn't you cover johnny loujack as a rookie stop it i've got to talk about my zoo again all right
- 38:57[SPEAKER_03]: holding a folding on Bill Belichick.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I will lead this one because I was there for that.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_03]: And it was a god-awful disaster.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I can't imagine.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_03]: I can't remember another really hype debut that when his badly is that one did.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_03]: The first six minutes were great.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_03]: And then the last 54 was the worst thing I'd ever seen.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it was incredible.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_03]: did nothing right, offensively defensively special teams.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_03]: So that was something.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_03]: And I, I, the best part of it was going down to the post game after this debacle and you walk into the Kenan football center and they do their, their media there and they've got all these chairs sit up and they got the Carolina backdrop, but framing the Carolina backdrop is all these festive balloons
- 39:52[SPEAKER_03]: And it's like that would be weird if they had won after a loss it looked really weird and having been around North Carolina a lot over the years it's not really a Carolina kind of thing to do.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_03]: Bill Bella check.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think that's a Bill Bella check thing to do.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_03]: I wonder who might have influenced the interior operating there.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just just curious.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, hold her fold on Bill.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_03]: I'm folding.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_03]: That was so bad.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_03]: That was so bad.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_03]: They got a chance to win the next two games.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_03]: They're playing Charlotte and Richmond.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't have the schedule in front of me.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_03]: If they've got Wake Forest or Stanford, so those are teams that look bad enough, they may be able to
- 40:35[SPEAKER_03]: Oh boy, that is a mess and it's going to take a lot of work to improve that.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_03]: I'll open the floor.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: What are you guys think?
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it did look like there should have been corsages available in the balloon area.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: That was awful.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: I would argue that might be one of the three most embarrassing losses in bill
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: a storied career.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: It might be the most embarrassing loss, giving the amount of dignitaries that were there, ESPN's hype of the game, for all the obvious reasons, and then just to get boat-raced like that.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't that they just lost.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: It was how they lost and how they looked during the loss.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not folding on Bellachick long-term at Carolina if he sticks around to see this through, but I'm definitely folding on this season.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: They're still going to win some games because that schedule is so hysterically soft, but that program, and Pat, I'm with you a hundred percent.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's in a bad way right now, and I can't see it getting a lot better by the end of the season.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think I might be the lone holds here, both this season and moving forward.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is kind of Bella checks him.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you look back at his NFL tin.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he used those that kind of first quarter of the season to kind of get to know his team a little bit better.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they understand what.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: what buttons to push, you know, how will we might best scheme up some of these guys, how we might cover up some of these flaws and I think the game kind of made that approach almost to the open or against a very good TCU team.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the other thing that I think it's lost in all the shuffle is like TCU true legitimate big 12 contender maybe kind of flirting with playoff obviously they won nine games last year brought back a lot of that teams like this is a very good opponent that they went up against.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that is
- 42:32[SPEAKER_00]: kind of kind of been taken into account and look 70 new faces like you're not going to necessarily know what's going to go on with those guys.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so I am still going to hold, yes, I think they'll get back on track these next couple of weeks and look, the ACC schedule is is pillow soft in terms of what they got to face this year.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: They miss all those top tier teams in the ACC.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think Bill will get them playing much better in the next couple of weeks and I think they can take that take some of that momentum back into the conference playing.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just say they don't have good players and they weren't well coached.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's what killed me and that's what really shocked me was Yeah, like it was an execution thing like like that to me was it was the thing that I think stuck out watching at home And maybe you've had you got some some more insight into this, but like that they just didn't execute outside of that opening drive And I think if you if you're talking about a bill bell check coach team something that can change is it's going to be that execution component for a lot of those
- 43:26[SPEAKER_03]: I would hope his son, the defensive coordinator, can coach up his linebackers to make a run fit.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_03]: They weren't just running up into the blockers and getting blowed.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_03]: And they were running lanes that were eight feet wide.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_03]: It was like, they did not even practice run support for the linebackers and safety's all year.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_03]: I was just, I was shocked at what we were looking at there.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_01]: Conference, first drive, beautiful.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's like someone kidnapped.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: the team after that and proof of life newspaper photos.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: It was horrific.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad I wasn't there.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: I watched it.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad I wasn't there.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_03]: Well, wow.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_03]: I said, I said in the press box beforehand, and you guys know this, this is medium mentality.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_03]: I said train record juggernaut, nothing in between.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_03]: And we got the train record.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_03]: So it was good to write about.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_03]: You know, that's that's what we look for.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_03]: We want extremes and we got an extreme that speaking of extremes, Alabama, oh my,
- 44:24[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my, uh, all the talk about how much better they were going to be in year 200 K Linda Bore, and they open with a face plant against Florida state who really might be much much improved.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_03]: Certainly look the part, but still a two touchdown loss in a game.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_03]: They were a two touchdown favorite, fama, uh, G. Gino, uh, you holding or folding on
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: This feels a lot like the Billy Napier situation last year where the donors are already calculating the buyouts and we're already listing who are the odds on favorites to replace the board and
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then Napier got it together, and the gateers actually finished strong, and there was this optimism, and now it feels like Florida's sort of turn the corner.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder if that is the same sort of situation here.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to hold them, but it's with an asterisk.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're dangerously close to a tipping point with this program and with the bore.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to win the next few games, so get a buy, and then they head into Georgia.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: And to me, that is a game that is going to help determine the fate of the board.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Because if they go out there and they lay another Florida state game, I don't know how you come back from that.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's hope.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to hold on to them right now.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm holding to.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: And you look at the high ends that they are still capable of.
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: They've still got the talent.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: They still got a good coach that has win at one of the highest percentages of a mini active head coach at this point.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_00]: This is a team that still can't accomplish their goals.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: This is even though they looked really bad in that opener.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 46:30[SPEAKER_00]: Look, the issue is not that the high end, it's not about competing against the Georgia's and LSU's of the world.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's about competing against the low end.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's about getting up for those games that you know you're going to win by double digits.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a leadership thing on the team.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a talent issue at Alabama.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's a leadership issue.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_00]: there within those players and they've got to take some responsibility for this too.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_00]: I know there's a lot of focus on Kailandivore, but it's also on those players as well to step up.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when you get pushed around physically like they did against the Nulls, that's on those players.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_00]: They are capable of much more, and they know it.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's going to be the big thing for Alabama moving forward this season, you know, are those players going to start taking leadership, you know, not, you know, under you, it's probably understandable last year in terms of, all right, we don't know what buttons to push in terms of, you know, suffering a lost Oklahoma or or Vanderbilt, how do you respond to that in game, I think.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: this on the players, I think the turn things around almost as much as it is, the coaching staff there at Alabama.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still going to hold just because of the talent level and the fact that you know those are good coaches on that side of the ball, but this is a team-wide thing for Alabama.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: They can still get back to where they want to be in contending in the SEC, but I think that was more of a wake-up call.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're in Tallahassee more than anything.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna hold barely like we go one more round and somebody up's the anti I'm folding I'm holding reluctantly at this point.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because that that was very discouraging and Ryan, I think your point is good about the players, but then also it it does the mentality there always started with the head coach and
- 48:07[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think the mentality is urgent enough, and has enough edge.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_03]: I wasn't there, none of us were there, but watching on television, I saw what I heard H.M.A.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_03]: Karen, the former Alabama Great quarterback, say on the radio earlier this week.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_03]: Where's the sideline juice, man?
- 48:24[SPEAKER_03]: I watch guys in the third quarter making effort place breaking tackles, gaining extra yards, and there's like two guys on the sidelines clapping, and there's 30 guys just staring.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I just don't get the lack of intensity, the almost, like,
- 48:41[SPEAKER_03]: we don't.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like they don't care.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure they do.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: You wouldn't have gone for the offseason that players do and then get to game time and decide you don't care, but that's kind of what they're projecting out there.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_03]: So that's a tough thing to fix.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_03]: You can't necessarily just go in and find an intensity.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think as easily as you can fix schematic things.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm reluctantly holding.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: And pat to that point, you almost wonder, and Brian's right, the board is magnificent coach.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, his record speaks for itself.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: But is there a little bit of a substitute teacher mentality?
- 49:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you've gone from Saben.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want to, I mean, that was last year.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: You can compare him to Saben last year.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: I get it.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: This year is on him.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I just wonder if
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we had the principle as our head coach for so many years and now do we have a substitute teacher.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's the case, but I think you can ask the question.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they at least project that as a potential explanation for this.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_03]: So, fascinating to see.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_03]: Clemson, I was there for the game against LSU.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of it was ugly.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_03]: Some of it was good, but I'm holding on Clemson.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not folding after a loss to an LSU team that I do think is just significantly improved defensively.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_03]: They were not good in the second half.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_03]: I was not a Clemson lover going into this season.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I didn't really see how a team that didn't beat much of anybody last.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_03]: You was suddenly going to jump up and be a national championship team.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_03]: they're not a bad thing.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's still in the ACC and they can still make the playoff.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_03]: So I am holding, but I was, you know, I had low, low expectations are relatively low expectations for Clemson to begin with.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_03]: What about you guys?
- 50:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the same, you know, I still think there's a team that is still top 10 caliber, you know, like they've got the talent.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think more questions than you probably had after coming into the season in terms of the offensive lines for the run game, just kind of disappearing, especially in that second half.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, it seemed like you have one wide receiver go out for a hamstring injury, and then it seems like the whole offense.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_00]: just kind of shut down.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think they will be much better moving forward.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think they will get back to their their clums and ways and look that would just find a way somehow.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know like every single season you know at the end of the year he's he's in contention he's there even if he might not have the team necessarily to compete.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I think ACC play will be beneficial to clums and they will get back on track.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still holding it and I still think because they are such a veteran team like in moments like this it can kind of rally the troops a little bit get them more focused on
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: on what they have to do weekend and week out and it wouldn't surprise me at all if you kind of see Clemson there coming out of the ACC title game at at 12 on one and looking more like that the Clemson we kind of thought they were going to be coming into the year.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_01]: Well, in our preseason show, I took Miami to win the ACC was nothing against taste against Clemson.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: It was just more my belief in Miami, but I'm here at the University of Tennessee and teaching classes this academic year and did it last year also.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I got to tell you after listening to Dabo and his grading, he said that that
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: Someone needs to help dabble with this grading acumen because I at LSU held a lot higher than a 65.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought it was a great the way that Brian Kelly kind of clap back at him.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think good naturedly.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: But with the role of the eyes, you know, Clemson got, you know, LSU beat him fair and square and they, you know, they expose some of Clemson's weaknesses and the things that we thought might be strengths for Clemson weren't necessarily strengths at night against LSU.
- 52:42[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not giving up on Clemson.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm holding on to him, but it was funny to listen to the Davos grading system.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you'd get called into like by the dean to discuss why the heck you were giving out those kind of grades of 58.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: What occurs?
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: What occurs?
- 53:01[SPEAKER_03]: And it didn't you know, it didn't bring that back salty brown Kelly, which I'm always in favor of, you know, Nice brown Kelly is unnatural.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_03]: So let's let's bring back the the sassy Brian.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_03]: So that was a good exchange there.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_03]: Speaking of Brian Kelly former coach at Notre Dame, the current Notre Dame team did not get off to a great start.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_03]: Good game.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_03]: Brian, you were there sweating in the the human self-floor to tropics.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_03]: You holding your folding on Notre Dame.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm definitely holding.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the lack of touches for Jeremiah love, and especially in the first half was just puzzling to me.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: I like that was almost a game plan loss.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: And in like CJ Carr, I think everybody, you know, had some high expectations coming into the game in terms of how he would play quarterback.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_00]: I almost think he exceeded them, you know, especially in that second half rallying them and making some big time throws.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: including that one on the bus to cover jam in the field.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he impressed me, I think, at quarterback.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the Irish are going to be fine.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_00]: When we know they're going to morale, I think Marcus Freeman is a great head coach.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_00]: You could see last year in terms of using losses.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of fueled them the rest of the way.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think the way that Notre Dame came back in this one.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to use that moving forward and look.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: You look at that schedule, you know what?
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be a home favorite there against Texas A&M in a week or two and look.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_00]: the schedule, it sets out well for Notre Dame to go back and make another run like they did last year.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: I am definitely holding on the Irish.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think they will be just fine as long as they start force feeding the ball to Jeremiah Love instead of giving him only 14 touches in a game.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_01]: Pat, you got better here for me.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't you go ahead?
- 54:35[SPEAKER_03]: I do, that's true.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_03]: I would say I'm certainly holding on Notre Dame.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_03]: It was a little bit disappointing in some areas, but they'll be fine.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_03]: The one area of concern for me is the schedule which Brian said is manageable, but it also doesn't present a lot of quality opportunity.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_03]: So I think the Texas A&M game now looms very large next week.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_03]: uh... if you lose that in your own two and you're looking at Purdue Arkansas disappointing boysy state and see state u.s.c.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_03]: question mark bc navy pitsburg city where you're going to get quality wins so i think they've they are not quite must win territory from a playoff standpoint against a and m but darn close to it so uh... they'll use the off-week and and get better from this Marcus Freeman does
- 55:24[SPEAKER_03]: tend to bounce back extremely well from losses and I expect that to be the case here.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_01]: They lost a northern Illinois last year, they end up in the playoff.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is a much better loss than an NIU.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_01]: I did love that Sean McDonough during his game call when Jeremiah loved.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_01]: carried us.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there's Jeremiah love back from the witness protection program.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like you, Brian.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, is he still in the roster, right?
- 55:52[SPEAKER_01]: We can still hand him the ball.
- 55:55[SPEAKER_01]: So, yes, you're going to see a lot more of him.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_01]: CJ Carr didn't throw down field much, but I think he showed a real toughness.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I think if you're Notre Dame fan or if you're Notre Dame coach or
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: But to your point Pat, you're right, the schedule while they might be favored in these games.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they're going to be favored by a lot against A&M.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: That by week will help.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_01]: We'll just see what happens with it.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm holding on them, too, but they've put themselves in a tiny bit of distress.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_03]: I agree, CJ CarPlay, I think, exceeded expectations and showed some real some character and some clutch down the stretch.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_03]: All right, last on our Holdman Foldham, probably the most important one.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_03]: The Oregon Duck mascot.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_03]: puddles.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_03]: This is a tough debut, guys.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_03]: This is a tough debut.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_03]: He goes running out for their game against Montana State.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_03]: He trips and he loses his head.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_03]: The head, the big duck head piece falls off.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_03]: And there's nothing worse if you were a mascot than to be sitting there unmasked.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_03]: in front of an entire full stadium, and especially the duck because the duck is a real sassy dude, man.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_03]: And all of a sudden, there you are out there looking like Joe college student instead of puddles the duck.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_03]: How bad is this?
- 57:23[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have to do this guy after full?
- 57:25[SPEAKER_03]: Does he have to leave school?
- 57:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's my question.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: This is a second season in a row that puddles as lost his head.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: And there is no worse Cardinal Sin as a mascot.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_01]: And wait, Pat, didn't you do a, weren't you the cardinal tree or something one time?
- 57:42[SPEAKER_03]: I was the Stanford tree once.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, a tree.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, this is like catching Mickey Mouse, smoking a cigarette behind Cinderella Castle.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like the headgear is off.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's, you know, you just don't do it as a mascot.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: So, puddles, one word for you, bell crow, try it.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: It works.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_00]: I will say maybe you can blame it on a little bit of jet lag because he was at game day earlier that morning celebrating Lee Corso and saying goodbye so maybe we can blame it a little bit on the jet lag in terms of not having that head secured but you know I'm definitely holding you know pedals one of the best mascots in all of college football and
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: I can imagine that if not next week that maybe a week after that, he's going to use this to advance.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to have like four different heads.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to like swap them out, you know, each quarter, like he's going to use this to his as vanage and I think that's why we all love puddles and what he can do.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_03]: I love puddles because he once sprayed silly string on Pete Famel on live TV that's why I love him But if I have no, I'm sorry.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think he needs to transfer.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_03]: I think we need to back up puddles I think this is the capital crime and and there has to be some consequences So we'll see how it's we'll see how puddles shows up here mascot on mass pot punishment from 40.
- 59:02[SPEAKER_03]: That's right draconian
- 59:07[SPEAKER_03]: All right, winners and stake dinners are weekly, pick them contest.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_03]: There's clearly already been cooking of the books because somehow Gene has the best record.
- 59:15[SPEAKER_03]: Stop the steal.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_03]: We need an exam.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_03]: We need a forensic audit here.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_03]: Gene's four and two, Brian's three and three.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_03]: I'm two and four.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_03]: I'm terrible so far.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully that gets better this week.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna pick four games against the spread.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_03]: And then we're gonna each have a lock of the week.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_03]: Let's try to bleed,
- 59:36[SPEAKER_03]: uh... starting with the big game of the week michigan at oklahoma michigan is getting five and a half uh... jina were you going on this
- 59:45[SPEAKER_01]: Brian, I just want to remind you of something that Pat said last week about the TCU Carolina game, I don't think there's any way bellachick comes out with an unprepared team.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_01]: The scary part is I was thinking, you know what, he's absolutely right, there's no way he's going to come out with a number of pair of teams.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: This is a tough tough game.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: Five and a half points is a lot of points to give to Michigan.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm going to go with OU, lay the points, based mostly on the combo platter of John material.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: I like his experience.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: I like what venibals might be able to do against your underwood home game.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think the pause is going to be rocking.
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to take OU and lay the points.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going with Oklahoma as well and for a lot of the reasons that you know just mentioned I mean look a true freshman first road start like that is a recipe for disaster especially against print pedals and that even said look Oklahoma not just job material J not so supposedly healthy for this game he was very limited in terms of his touches in the opener so I think he will be good to go that is a very dangerous backfield especially given what we know Bill Biedenbach can do with that outfit of line so
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: Give me a Oklahoma home and a weird number at five and a half, but that's almost Vegas kind of telling you, hey, watch out for this game.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_00]: Something could be a little crazy there in Norman.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I hate to go along with you guys, but I'm taking Oklahoma here.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_03]: It is a squirrely number, but true freshman first road start.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma looks quite good.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they didn't play anybody, but still.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's what way improved team.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to say Oklahoma wins by a touchdown.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going with the sooners there with you all.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_03]: The sidewalk Iowa at Iowa State can't produce or can't can you please play the music.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we love it in the sea of air.
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we love it in air.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_03]: There we go.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_03]: All right, I mean, they'll be drinking that tap water.
- 1:01:49[SPEAKER_03]: They'll be a probably drinking a lot of other stuff, too.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_03]: Natti Light, Bush Light, God only knows, but great annual series, the Cyhawk, they have a trophy, they play each other in every sport that they both have, and they keep score all year, and somebody gets a trophy at the end.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_03]: This is just a fun rivalry, and I think two pretty good teams.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_03]: We got Iowa getting three and a half on the road in Ane's hooray, Brian, where you're going,
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go with I would get in the three and a half.
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think the hook in in particular kind of makes me lean towards the hot guys Just a little bit.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is always a close series.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like it's always coming down to the fourth quarter Somebody making a field goal miss in a field goal something like that.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think these two teams they enjoy playing against each other I think the conservative nature of both coaches are gonna play into this one.
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: So with that hook, give me I will get in the three and a half History tells me I should take the hot guys
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_01]: They've won the last six games and games.
- 1:02:48[SPEAKER_01]: They've won seven the last nine games of this series.
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_01]: And as Brian said, there's that hook.
- 1:02:55[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm gonna go with Rocco Beck and I'm gonna give the three and a half.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_01]: I love the way he's playing.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_01]: I just think it's time for Iowa State to win this one that they end the streak of Iowa.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_03]: uh... i i like the way rock out back this plan i you know i've made some gutty plays at the end against uh... can's a state in iron but i'm taking i will i think i look and went out right here because here's what i expect they brought in mark for an ask the quarterback from south to go to state and he did nothing last week and i wonder if that's partially by design that we're not even going to really break him out if we don't have to if we can rewatched i was offences in the past oh yes i have oh yeah maybe that wasn't by design
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_03]: maybe not.
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's a very typical box score, you know?
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know?
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's for either yards and let's throw for 50.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_03]: I did say that when I saw the box score that you don't change Iowa, Iowa changes you and Mark Grinowski was changed into a pedestrian.
- 1:03:56[SPEAKER_03]: That was a great line.
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_03]: Quarterback.
- 1:03:58[SPEAKER_03]: But I look, I'm expecting more.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_03]: I think they will break it out a little bit more and they'll win the game.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm taking the Hawkeye's not just to cover,
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_03]: All right, another old rival regain that unfortunately doesn't get played much anymore, but it's back, which is great.
- 1:04:16[SPEAKER_03]: The border war, Kansas, and Missouri, um, if you grew up or lived in either state from 18, I think it was 1895 through 2011, you probably had feelings about this.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_03]: And in fact, if you lived in either state for the 40 years that preceded that, you probably had feelings not related to football, but related to the Civil War.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_03]: and relate to the fact that a group of Confederate Raiders from Missouri went in and burned Lawrence to the ground in 1863.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_03]: If you burn somebody else's town to the ground, grudges in Sue.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_03]: And so there's been a grudge between these two schools forever.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_03]: They stopped playing in 2011.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_03]: They're back now.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's fantastic.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_03]: This game is in Columbia, Missouri.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_03]: Kansas to an O, Missouri is one and O. Kansas is getting six and a half genome, your thoughts.
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the real upset is that you didn't say I was there in 1895.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_01]: So I appreciate that.
- 1:05:15[SPEAKER_01]: I took Kansas as my surprise team in the big 12.
- 1:05:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel like
- 1:05:21[SPEAKER_01]: Even though my brain is telling me to take my zoo and give the points, I'm going to stick with Jalen Ganyols, I'm going to take the six and a half and hope.
- 1:05:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm I'm leaning more towards the home team and instead of instead of just hope and a prayer I think you know the reliance of Kansas on Jalen Daniels to to be that team to be that offense Zoo can kind of take him away just a little bit I think that does give them enough headroom to win by more than a touchdown at home So I will go with Pat's Tigers there and in this very important rivalry for both teams
- 1:05:54[SPEAKER_03]: And for Pat, and so Pat is not going with past Tigers, I'm taking Kansas and taking the points.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_03]: I think this is a field goal game.
- 1:06:03[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's going to be really close.
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_03]: I like what Kansas has done so far.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_03]: I do think Jayland Daniels is an incredibly dynamic quarterback.
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_03]: And the problem with Missouri, having watched the first game, they got skill talent, man, they've got it, but the offensive line got their quarterback hit a lot.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_03]: Bo Perbilo was really good, Penn State transfer.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_03]: But he took a lot of hits.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_03]: They've moved their all-American left guard to left tackle, and it's been a struggle.
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's gonna be probably more of a struggle when you're not playing Central Arkansas.
- 1:06:32[SPEAKER_03]: So I am gonna take the Hawks to cover and the Tigers to win.
- 1:06:39[SPEAKER_03]: All right, South Florida at Florida, another neighborhood scrap, not really a rival ring, but me probably means a lot more to the Bullsland to the Gators, but the Gators probably better be ready because South Florida was very good in thumping Boise State.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_03]: Bulls getting 17 and a half, pretty big number, Brian, where are you at with this one?
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_00]: Give me the gators in this one, and I actually don't think that USF, despite the scoreline of that game against Boise State played as well as that final score would actually indicate.
- 1:07:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there were a lot of red zone possessions that came up with for the Bronco, so I think Florida ends up putting those into the end zone.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is a very much a disparity between the talent of an SEC team.
- 1:07:20[SPEAKER_00]: And what U.S.F.
- 1:07:21[SPEAKER_00]: has despite all that, you know, a lot of veterans, a lot of people that are going to be excited to play there in the swamp.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_00]: I give me Florida, even though they got that big number, but 17 and a half, they covered it at home.
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_01]: Do the Gators.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: Peacahead to LSU and Miami after that.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_01]: And the answer is no.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think South Florida has their full attention.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they cover in this one.
- 1:07:49[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm actually going to go with you guys both here and take the gators as well.
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_03]: South Florida was a plus three turnover margin against Boise and I don't think they're going to get three turnovers out of Florida.
- 1:08:01[SPEAKER_03]: All things being equal, Florida is going to be a lot better and should be able to roll in this one.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_03]: All right, lock of the week, we each pick one game independent of each other that you like here.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_03]: Who's got a lock for me?
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_01]: I'll go.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_01]: Did anybody happen to see the little Dan Lanning Mike Gundiga catfight recently about assorted resources at their program?
- 1:08:31[SPEAKER_01]: If there's any question, if Lanning's going to take his foot off the neck of Oklahoma State in that game, it just disappeared, what are they getting 29 and a half did you say, Pat?
- 1:08:45[SPEAKER_03]: I think so.
- 1:08:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't say it.
- 1:08:47[SPEAKER_01]: Getting 29 and a half, Oklahoma State is I think Oregon State and puddles blow past that.
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and it was quite the week for Mike Gundy too with the commercial that he released on on the rant.
- 1:09:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a gun he's been in the news this week.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_00]: So he's definitely going to get it handed to him because not only is Dan landing going to get an entire team fired up for him, but he's going to make sure the starters are in an extra series or two, just to get a few extra scores on Mike and say, here's what we're paying for and here here here's how it goes.
- 1:09:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going with my lock of the week.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about earlier North Carolina.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_00]: giving 13 and a half at Charlotte was not impressed by the 49ers and that opener against App State.
- 1:09:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think, regardless of the quarterback issue, I think that's kind of why this line in its price as small as it is.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's probably playing into the hands of North Carolina and giving the tar heels to put cover by scoring two touchdowns on 49ers.
- 1:09:42[SPEAKER_03]: Holy moly.
- 1:09:42[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, look, I thought Charlotte was bad too, but I don't know how you can have any faith in North Carolina on a five day turnaround.
- 1:09:49[SPEAKER_03]: No less.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see I'm one more neighborhood scrap where I'm going for my lock of the week Baylor at SMU old Southwest Conference rivals they're playing in Dallas SMU's only given two and a half and I didn't like what I saw to Baylor in the opener defensively.
- 1:10:08[SPEAKER_03]: I think SMU has the weapons to take advantage of that and to certainly win by a field goal or more.
- 1:10:14[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm rolling with the Mustangs there.
- 1:10:18[SPEAKER_03]: Last thing before we go, we'll let the audience mercifully move on here.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_03]: The Exxon Valdez is pulling into the fort for the show.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_03]: We've got to talk about a class action airplane lawsuit over window seats that don't have windows.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_03]: This was filed Eastern District of New York against Delta by a guy.
- 1:10:43[SPEAKER_03]: I think the Nicholas Myers and the argument here is that Delta sold him seats that it build as window seats.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_03]: And there was no window.
- 1:10:57[SPEAKER_03]: There was a wall there, right?
- 1:10:59[SPEAKER_03]: Not every seat.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes you get in there there's there's a wall there's not an actual window.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_03]: And so he is suing Delta for false advertising claiming that and it's a class action suit.
- 1:11:11[SPEAKER_03]: He's trying to drag everybody can along with him.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_03]: And saying that Delta needs to actually give you a window if they saw you a window seat.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_03]: Jean your frequent flyer.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_03]: How do you feel about a Delta window seat that isn't a window seat?
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_01]: So this is like obstructed view seats at a stadium, isn't it, I mean, it is.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I say Sue, not because I think it's, I mean, it is.
- 1:11:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's a ridiculous suit, but I have spent, and as have you guys spent my life flying, I've eaten so many alpha wafer's and spam chips.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_01]: Jesus from North Korea, the stuff that they serve me on a plane, you know, my hometown airline that the motto is, we landed.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_01]: What else do you want?
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_01]: So, I say any time we have a chance to stick it to the airlines, let's go for it.
- 1:12:05[SPEAKER_01]: On Roon, for you, send me a letter, I'll sign the class action.
- 1:12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, vigilante jeans.
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_03]: Go on, after him.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm going to refuse myself since my wife works for an airline, but I will say that you know, there's there's definitely some merit to the suit in terms of the marketing of these windows.
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_00]: If there's not one, you shouldn't be asked to pay the extra fee.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: They do nickel and dime use so much nowadays.
- 1:12:29[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't have elite status, you can't choose this window seat.
- 1:12:32[SPEAKER_00]: You can't go in the front of the plane.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_00]: there's definitely some aspects of flying that were not as good as they were, you know, five, ten years ago.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_00]: So I think there's some merit to the loss.
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'll just say that in terms of the marketing of some of those window seats, but I'm more concerned about the window etiquette that some people, especially in the middle seats are paying nowadays.
- 1:12:52[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I mean, if you were in the middle seat, you do not have access to the window.
- 1:12:55[SPEAKER_00]: Let me make that abundantly clear,
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to ask nicely and say, hey, can you pull down on the shade so we can see things for for landing or on a approach or whatever?
- 1:13:07[SPEAKER_00]: Totally fine.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_00]: I get that.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're reaching over the window to pull down the window, that is a big no-no, and I think that is more cost for concern and more of need of a lawsuit.
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's those middle seat people that think they have access to the window.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_00]: That to me is a bigger issue than what this is this lawsuit has been bringing up in in terms of the class action.
- 1:13:26[SPEAKER_03]: you you've you've had a hot button there first of all yes if you reach if I'm in the window seat and you reach over and put no no we're going to fight we will fight the right then I get you get some looks this this past weekend let me let me just say that secondly though mankind spent how many million years bound to the ground unable to get up above the ground
- 1:13:49[SPEAKER_03]: The last hundred plus years or so, we've been able to fly and get up and see what the Earth looks like.
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_03]: And you want to pull down the shades?
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_03]: You don't want to see the Earth?
- 1:13:57[SPEAKER_03]: What the hell?
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_03]: I do not understand this obsession with everybody pulling down the shades in the middle of the day.
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_03]: You're flying in some ways, being Brian lives in Salt Lake.
- 1:14:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of those beautiful places to fly into and out of and to pull down to what I've got to see.
- 1:14:11[SPEAKER_03]: I've got to see, you know, season two of Landman here.
- 1:14:14[SPEAKER_03]: I've got to be watching that.
- 1:14:15[SPEAKER_03]: I can't look outside at America.
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_03]: drives me completely crazy that people pulled down the shades all the time on the damn airplane.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_03]: So, that's a separate point.
- 1:14:27[SPEAKER_03]: As for this, just as 40, I am real.
- 1:14:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'm with you guys, stick it to the big airlines.
- 1:14:33[SPEAKER_03]: Take their money if you can get it.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure this will be thrown out in about four minutes, but it's worth a shot.
- 1:14:39[SPEAKER_03]: So
- 1:14:40[SPEAKER_03]: All right, that's our show we've gone on too long as it is.
- 1:14:43[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for listening.
- 1:14:44[SPEAKER_03]: Please subscribe.
- 1:14:46[SPEAKER_03]: Please find us on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, whatever the case may be.
- 1:14:52[SPEAKER_03]: We'll be back next week.
- 1:14:53[SPEAKER_03]: We'll try to do better.
- 1:14:55[SPEAKER_03]: The season is not over after all.
- 1:14:57[SPEAKER_03]: We'll do it the weekend.
