- 0:11Hello friends. Yeah, it's Sean here.
- 0:13Lovely to have your company on this Tuesday, the 10th of
- 0:17December and so glad that you have invited me in so that you
- 0:22and me, we do what we do best together and that's read God's
- 0:25word. And today, well today is kind of
- 0:28the the second half of the cliffhanger from yesterday where
- 0:32Paul being dragged away by the Roman office, well not dragged
- 0:35carried away by the Roman soldiers, turns back to the
- 0:39crowd to tell them his message. And this is the message that he
- 0:43shares with them. And brilliantly, this is Paul
- 0:46sharing his testimony, sharing the story of God and his faith
- 0:51in God and what Jesus has done for them.
- 0:55I don't know whether you've ever had a chance to Share your story
- 0:58in a way like this. It's it's not about exercise, to
- 1:01sit down and to think, what would I tell people?
- 1:04How would I share my story of faith of what Jesus has done and
- 1:08what I believe that Jesus has done for everyone?
- 1:11Probably not a bad thing to contemplate how we would do that
- 1:14because these opportunities probably don't come along very
- 1:17often. So it's good to be ready, ready
- 1:20to go with our story on tap. So you want a performer?
- 1:25You want to hear how he does it? Me too.
- 1:27Well, let's read it together. That's Acts chapter 22.
- 1:42Brothers and esteemed fathers, Paul said, listen to me as
- 1:47ioffer my defence. When they heard him speaking in
- 1:50their own language, the silence was even greater.
- 1:56Then Paul said, I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cecilia,
- 2:03and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under
- 2:07Gamaliel. As his student.
- 2:10I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs.
- 2:14I became very zealous to honour God in everything I did, just
- 2:19like all of you today. And I persecuted the followers
- 2:23of the way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and
- 2:28women and throwing them in prison.
- 2:30The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify
- 2:33that this is so, for I received letters from them to our Jewish
- 2:38brothers in Damascus, authorising me to bring the
- 2:42followers of the way from there to Jerusalem in chains to be
- 2:47punished. I was on the road approaching
- 2:51Damascus. About noon.
- 2:53A very bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me.
- 2:59I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul,
- 3:06why are you persecuting me? Who are you, Lord?
- 3:10I asked and the voice replied, I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one
- 3:17you were persecuting. The people with me saw the light
- 3:21but didn't understand the voice speaking to me.
- 3:24I asked, what should I do, Lord? And the Lord told me, get up and
- 3:31go into Damascus, and there you'll be told everything you
- 3:35are to do. I was blinded by the intense
- 3:39light and had to be led by the hand to Damascus by my
- 3:41companions. A man named Ananias lived there.
- 3:45He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law and well
- 3:49regarded by all the Jews of Damascus.
- 3:52He came and stood beside me and said, Brother Saul, regain your
- 3:58sight. And at that very moment I could
- 4:03see him. Then he told me, The God of our
- 4:07ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the
- 4:12righteous. 1 and hear him speak. For you are to be His witness,
- 4:18telling everyone what you have seen and heard.
- 4:22What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptised.
- 4:26Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.
- 4:31After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the temple and
- 4:36fell into a trance. I saw a vision of Jesus saying
- 4:40to me, Hurry, leave Jerusalem, for the people here won't accept
- 4:45your testimony about me. But Lord, I argued, they
- 4:50certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat
- 4:54those who believed in you. And I was in complete agreement
- 4:58when your witness Stephen was killed.
- 5:01I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned
- 5:04him. But the Lord said to me, go, for
- 5:09I will send you far away to the Gentiles.
- 5:13The crowd listened until Paul said that word.
- 5:17Then they all began to shout away with such a fellow, he
- 5:21isn't fit to live. They yelled, threw off their
- 5:25coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air.
- 5:30The commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lashed
- 5:34with whips and made him confess his crime.
- 5:37He wanted to find out why the crowd had become so furious when
- 5:42they tied Paul down to lash him. Paul said to the officer
- 5:46standing there. Is it legal for you to whip a
- 5:49Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried?
- 5:53When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked,
- 5:57What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.
- 6:01So the commander went over and asked Paul, tell me, are you a
- 6:05Roman citizen? Yes, I certainly am, Paul
- 6:10replied. I am too, the commander
- 6:13muttered. And it cost me plenty, Paul
- 6:17answered. But I am a citizen by birth.
- 6:21The soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly
- 6:24withdrew when they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the
- 6:28commander was frightened because he had ordered him bound and
- 6:32whipped. The next day the commander
- 6:35ordered the leading priest's intercession with the Jewish
- 6:38High Council. He wanted to find out what the
- 6:41trouble was all about, so he released Paul to have him stand
- 6:47before them. Thank you Jesus, for the gift of
- 7:01faith that you place in our hearts.
- 7:04And this faith is not some generic cookie cutter pulled out
- 7:09of a box of Kellogg's Cornflakes faith.
- 7:11But this, this is a faith that you nurture personally in each
- 7:16one of our hearts. And each one of us has a story
- 7:20of how you have convicted us that you are indeed our Lord.
- 7:27Thank you that you would take a personal interest in each of us,
- 7:31that you love us not with a great big love that covers
- 7:36humanity in a sea of grace, but that your grace is given
- 7:41individually to each of us, Your dearly beloved children.
- 7:48We don't quite understand how you are capable of such enormity
- 7:53and such intimacy. But here you are, loving us in
- 7:59the way that you do anyway, even though we can't wrap our heads
- 8:01around it. May your love transform us so
- 8:07that we too can be children of the light, loving and restoring
- 8:13the world around us through Your presence and Your love.
- 8:18We are so grateful for all you have done for us.
- 8:21So we praise you and we pray all these things in your name,
- 8:25Jesus. Ah, man.
