- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: Tristan, your Texas Tech Red Raiders are four and one and still in first place in the Big 12.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: What's up, man?
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: My friend, we are 2-0 in conference.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: We can leave this whole 4-1 stuff at the door because, my friends, we are undefeated in the Big 12 after a big win, and that calls for something special.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: As always, after a big win.
- 1:14SPEAKER_05: We're gonna play the song.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Play the song.
- 1:23SPEAKER_07: With a few real win.
- 1:27SPEAKER_07: Red Raider coming into a beautiful time.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: Your Red Raiders are undefeated in games that Taj Brooks plays in.
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: That's four and oh.
- 1:43SPEAKER_05: The Washington State game doesn't count.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: Okay, so we're winners.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: We're winners of three straight.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: How about you?
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: That's one heck of a stat line, my friends.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: And you want to know something else?
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: TechStech is also 2-0 since the uh the mustache came about.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Since the uh the rally stash has emerged.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: So the stash stays.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: And Steven, I gotta say that this this mustache on my face is the craziest college football bet on Twitter of them all, I'd have to say.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Definitely.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: Totally not a Taco Bell related one or uh dog poop one or anything else.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: Converting to Mormonism.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: Uh the mustache is truly what everybody is talking about.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: 100%, dude.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: This this is this is it.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Albi.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: You you all we all I we're all doing tech a favor here.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, shouts out Dort's and tanks.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Um what how about you?
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech is 2-0 for the first time since 2013 uh in Big 12 conference play.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: It's a stat that makes me really sad, but we're here and we're out here.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: We're back.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Steven, we are winning at home, bro.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Can every single game be in the Jones ATT Stadium in Lubbock, Texas at Texas Tech University?
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Is that is that fair?
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Can we do that?
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: Who else is I think if the other teams agree, I think we could make it happen.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: The problem is the other teams need to agree.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: And I don't know if they'll do that.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: We all know who the big brand in this conference is.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: We all know who carries the weights of the viewership here, and it's your Texas Tech Red Raiders, so they should do us a favor after we make our Red Raider uh network here, okay?
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:26SPEAKER_05: Um, so we beat Cincinnati.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: Cincinnati, good team, by the way.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: Uh underrated team.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: I did not get a chance to watch it because I was working in Boise, Idaho this weekend, but I did re-watch it on Sunday, and then again I watched Extended Highlights today.
- 3:44SPEAKER_05: And I tell you what, I'm glad I didn't watch that in the moment because I would have been crapping my pants there in the fourth quarter.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, luckily, I caught the very end on my phone when I got back to the hotel and I saw the missed uh field goal.
- 3:57SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, stressful.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: How about you, Texas Tech, maybe just close it out instead of letting them get right back in it?
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: But hey.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Look, I mean, gotta give flowers to Cincinnati.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: Like that offense is cooking.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: And I mean, obviously, we'll talk about how easily it was able for they were able to cook us, but dude, that Soresby kid came in and games.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: That guy came in with laser focus and moved the ball downfield, man.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: He he doubled uh Baron Wharton's uh stat line in the game.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Um obviously, thankfully, we played a more balanced game to get us the dub, but I'm not gonna lie, dude, in that in the end of the fourth quarter, I straight up thought we're gonna lose.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: I really did.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: I I I really did.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Uh well, and it's not only it's not just you, man.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: Everybody thought from watching 15 plus years of Texas Tech, yeah, that we're gonna blow that game because teams in the past, uh Matt Wells team, uh Cliff Kingsbury team, Tommy Tubberville team, we all uh Tommy Taberville coach Texas Tech team would have lost that game.
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: So yeah, this was a nice change.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: It was nice of us to close out a game.
- 5:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you wish it wasn't that close in the first place, but hey, I mean, a win is a win, and that seems to be kind of this uh this program's mantra this year.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: Uh Joey will not stop talking about it in the in the press conferences, and neither will Kitley of just like, hey, most important thing here's a dub.
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: All right, we'll figure it out later.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: All right, two things there.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: A, the reason why I had you emphasize the Tupperville thing is he is now Cincinnati's head coach.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: He's their problem.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: We can erase him from history.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Indeed.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, after all, they did hire him away.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: You know, they were they big, big bad Cincinnati did come and sweep him off our pedestal.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: So they wanted him.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: They they took him, they took him from the Iraq that is Levick, Texas.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: Yes, right from our money clause.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: They were just able to money bag us.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Um and two, Steven, uh, I fully agree with the just win baby mentality.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, obviously, as fans, you'd prefer everyone to be comfortable.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: But at the end of the day, a four-and-one with close games matters, is I mean, is completely equal to a four and one where you blow everybody out at the end of the day.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: So they all count the same.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Um, obviously, they don't count the same to our extended lifetime, but um, it's a win is a freaking win, especially in this cage, uh, this this cage fight of a conference where everybody can lick each other when they at any moment.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: So it's uh and I meant I meant that to be like the fighting sense, not like way.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's I I mean it's it's in the fighting sense.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, so a dub is indeed a W.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: And Steven, you know, the the a good stat, you know, here we are just rolling out stats here, but I got to tell you, Texas Tech is undefeated against the G5 ads to the Big 12.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Yes, which is which is how it should be.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: You push those little nerds into the locker every time you see them, okay?
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Remind them that they're lucky to be here.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: Now, BYU doesn't count, right?
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: No, they don't count.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: BYU was never a G5 team.
- 7:15SPEAKER_05: They weren't a G5, they weren't a G5.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: Just want to clear that up for everybody.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Anytime you scheduled it, they treated like P5.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: Houston, you're cooked.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: UCF, you're cooked.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: Cincy, you are now cooked, okay?
- 7:27SPEAKER_05: All right, we're out here.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: We're we're owning this new Big 12.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Hey, and look, that G that that borderline G5 team of BYU might be the best team in the conference.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: So it's uh unreal.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Unreal.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: We'll we'll we'll talk about the Big 12 standings in just a second, but I wanted to hit on Texas Tech in the Cincinnati game because um Taj Brooks, let me just roll off a couple for you.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: 153 yards and one touchdown, 109 yards and a touchdown, 117 yards, 172 yards and two touchdowns.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, that's his stats for this season in games that he's played, were four and oh in games that he's that Taj Brooks has played in.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: Um, I think the stat is now up to like 9-2 or 10-2 in games where he uh exceeds 100 yards in the game.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: He's had a 20 plus yard run in every single game that he's played this season.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: Um, the dude is a monster, and he is the reason that this offense goes.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: If you are without Taj Brooks, uh there's a good chance you're not winning any of these games.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: Um, he's a beast.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: I love that man.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Definition of workhorse running back.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: I feel like we're gonna be uh wearing out that term as the season goes on.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, just as a good you do with a good workhorse, you put everything on its back, baby, because it's there to carry the load.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: And that's exactly what he does, man.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: And he did some magical stuff in that in the Cincinnati game.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: And what always just impresses me the most with Taj Brooks, it's not so much the big breakaway plays, those are always so uh great to watch.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: It's every time he gets tackled, and you just see him pop out for like an extra two yards every single time.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: You know, he never just gets clogged, and it rarely happens.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: He just crawls his way out of the pile and is like, no, I got five yards.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: You know, and it's it's yeah, it's it's wacky.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's I was listening to uh the 10-12 pod earlier um today, and those guys do a really good job covering the Big 12 and stuff like that.
- 9:23SPEAKER_05: Um, but they were talking about DJ Giddens at Kansas State and how you know he's right now he's the leader in the Big 12 in yards.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Taj is doing well, but his average isn't quite there with the rest of the top 12, the you know, the top six guys in the Big 12 running back wise.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: And I just started to imagine Taj Brooks with like the Kansas State offensive line, and it made me cry a little because Texas Tech just has not had the offensive line.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: And this season they've had to shuffle a ton of guys around and they're trying to work through it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: They've been serviceable.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: I don't want to like completely crap on the offensive line, but they're just not near some of these other teams in the Big 12 in terms of consistency and providing more of a push uh instead of Taj having to do most of the work.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: And that's what he's had to do on this team since he's been here is he's just made it work and uh avoiding the first guy.
- 10:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's led, I think he led the entire nation in broken tackles last year, yards after contact.
- 10:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, you had you need that type of back to be good with this offensive line, and he's making it work.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: So that's why to me, Taj Brooks is clearly the best running back in the Big 12 right now.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but hey, I mean, to each their own, I understand the stats, I understand the average isn't quite there.
- 10:39SPEAKER_05: But uh, if you've watched every Texas Tech game this year, he's the reason your offense goes.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and uh obviously those those main hosts are probably not paying as much attention to Texas Tech as the other teams that were projected to be uh leaders of the league, which is obviously no fault to them.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, it's funny that bring up a general Big 12 podcast.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I uh the first one recap I've listened to.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: I'm in the middle of the 1012 one right now before we start recording, um, was uh Heartland College Sports.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: And it's funny that you say that because uh Pete Mundo over there said if he's gonna pick any running back in the Big 12 on his team, it's probably Taj Brooks.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, good.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: So it's not he's he's getting some love out there on the on the Big 12 landscape, as he should.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, he probably is pound for pound the best running back in the conference, arguably one of the very best in the entire country.
- 11:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's ridiculous.
- 11:26SPEAKER_05: Uh I'm I love Taj Brooks.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: He is uh such a blessing to Texas Tech fans uh this season.
- 11:33SPEAKER_05: But um another guy that's go ahead.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Hey, uh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry to cut you off.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: I just want to leave running backs quite yet.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Do you think this this this is what it means for Zach Kitley moving forward that we know we need this uh caliber of uh reliable running back in order to produce points on the board?
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: No, I mean I think he's working with what he has.
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: I honestly think Zach Kitley is a guy that is going to look at his personnel and try to do what he what is best for the personnel.
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: I don't uh we learned last season and this season that he's not going full air raid, like he's just not going to do that.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: He knows that he has Taj Brooks on this team and he knows that we'll be successful with Taj Brooks on this team.
- 12:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, being 9-2, 10-2 with him getting 100 plus rushing yards is not an empty stat.
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: Like he's when he gets going, your offense gets going.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: Because when Taj Brooks provides you some confidence and a few first downs, that gets Baron Morton in the right mindset.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: And Baron Morton has been really solid this season.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he had he had a solid game.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: These stats, I mean, are are good, you know.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: Like they don't pop out.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: There's definitely guys that have thrown for more yards, there's guys that have thrown more touchdowns or whatever.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: But Baron Morton has been really, really good, and he was really, really good in this Cincinnati game.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Um, I I I didn't mean that as like a knock on Kidley either, because the good news is I really think you have a lot to be excited for with Dickey moving forward.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: I really think he'll be able to fulfill those tall shoes quite easily.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: We've said that over and over again on this podcast, so it's it's it's a moot point here.
- 13:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I still think it's gonna be a bit of a transition because you're oh yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, he is I mean, he's phenomenal.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: Taj Brooks truly is phenomenal.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I think Dickey's shown a lot of good stuff.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: He didn't get any carries this game, which was a little weird, but um uh yeah, him and whoever we get moving forward.
- 13:25SPEAKER_05: I know we have a couple running back recruits.
- 13:27SPEAKER_05: If if Cameron decides to stay after he recovers from his from his injury, then he's another guy to look uh in the future.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: But um, no, I mean I I can't say enough about Taj, but let's let's move on to Barron because this game, 251 yards, two touchdowns.
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: Uh again, he's just not turning the ball over.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Like he's making the correct decisions, he's not taking a lot of sacks, he's throwing the ball away when he needs to, he's finding his open receivers.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: There were a couple more drops this game that are infuriating because you just see it.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's right in their hands, and it just goes.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: But um, no, I really thought, and even Barron's keeping the ball now on some of these uh RPO options, he's getting a little more confidence.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: You can see beginning of the season, he was kind of taking it light.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: He's like, you know, I'm not gonna get hit.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: Now he's kind of built a little confidence, he's taking more hits, he's playing a little more football.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: So I I could just see him progressively getting better.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: You know, I have a weird uh description for Baron Morton.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: I kind of feel like he's a shepherd.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, he he's just kind of like the shepherd, and the team is his flock.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: You know, he's he's just moving the flock down the field and he's taking care of the flock, keeping the flock safe.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: You know, he's he's not he's he's he's been very conservative, I feel like.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: You know, he's he's not exactly um slicing and dicing right now.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: There was a few times during the Cincinnati game where uh I thought that was there were there were some gutsy throws, and that's that's when they caught me off guard.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Like anytime there's been a gutsy throw, I've been like, oh wow, that was actually uh that was a little dangerous.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Uh he nailed it.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Um the one that stands out is like he split two defenders to get Josh Kelly um to get a first down.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: Um and that scared the I pooped a little because I was like, that is that's picking territory, you know.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: But he he obviously nailed it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: So I really feel like he's kind of um taking on this Shepard archetype and not necessarily a uh a bomb, like a bomber, but more of a he's gonna need to take care of the team and make sure the win happens, even if it's not like flashy.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean if you can pick out any stat that's kind of describing what Barron's done this season, it's that Texas tech is first in the Big 12 and third down percentage at 52%.
- 15:33SPEAKER_05: And a lot of that's like that all day.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: A lot of that is on the back of Barron Morton.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: So third downs are a nightmare.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: They give all of us uh a heart attack, but Barron has somehow really made it work and found open guys when we need to most.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: And that's on Kitley's play calling, too.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: He's calling the right plays on third down.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: He even said in his presser this week, um, with them going for it less on fourth down and that mentality kind of shifting within the program this year, you know, they're really going for it on these third downs to try to just go for the first down and not just get a little closer to go for it on fourth down.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: So um, and they're answering the call.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, Barron's been really solid on third down this year.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: So um he's throwing a lot of touchdowns.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: He's only has two interceptions on the season.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: Um, if I'm looking at the stats here, um, yeah, he's fifth in the Big 12 right now in yards.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: Um, his completion percentage about 64%, and he's got 14 touchdowns on the year.
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: So he's he's the co-leader along with Josh Hoover and Shadur Sanders for touchdowns thrown by our Big 12 quarterback.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: And uh he's he's playing really, really well.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude, he's really living up to what he's supposed to be.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: Um, and and like I said, I I really just think feel like he's been a captain on the field.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's he's not soaking up all the attention, he's just making sure the dub is a dub.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: And that's that's all you want out of out of a quarterback at the end of the day.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: Like, sure, having having that Patrick Mahomes gunslinger is amazing.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: And you know, highlight reels and all that.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: But I'll take the wins all day over that.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: So yeah, and you don't need that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: You know, you have Tosh Brooks, exactly there with such a balanced offense.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're looking at Texas Tech right now, they're second in yards per game in the Big 12, fourth in passing yards per game, eighth in rushing yards.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: So that just tells you that this is a balanced attack as much as anything.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: So uh miss me with this Kitley Air raid business.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: You know, we're doing what we can to create a really successful offense, and that offense is number one in the Big 12 in points per game right now.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: So that's amazing.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: What a stat, dude.
- 17:35SPEAKER_05: I want to hear nothing, I want to hear nothing about complaining about the offense.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: I want to hear nothing about complaining about Micah Hudson.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: I want to hear nothing about this.
- 17:44SPEAKER_05: When we're not first place in the Big 12 in points per game, then you can complain about the offense.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Look, I mean, I I obviously I I I tweeted out some uh like that was a qu head scratcher from Zach Hitley on my Twitter, which obviously I'm gonna do every game, you know.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: He had he had head scratch the the inside the five, yeah.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: That was a head scratching three straight plays that he called.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: But hey, how about the rest of the game?
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: We scored on every exact possession in the Cincinnati game except for that one.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, and obviously a frustrating screen um as well.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: But dude, seriously, that my whole my whole thing was um that Zach Kitley is cooking, and this offense is a machine right now.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: This Texas Tech can score the football.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: So uh I you still see on Twitter a lot of people still just frustrated with Zach Kitley.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: I kind of feel like at this point, with the the frustration with Zach Kitley uh on people still kind of hanging on there, it's just the inertia.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: Like they don't want to get off that train yet.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: And I I still I don't know if they've realized that we've come out of the tunnel of Zach Kitley being in over his head.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Like the guy with number one, number one points per game, uh, no number one offense in the Big 12 right now, that kind of says the guy knows what he's doing.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: And I know we have some great players, but obviously there's gonna be other teams of the Big 12 that have at least equally have good weapons, you know, balanced out across the board.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: So and they're not they're not the same numbers.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: So the guy's doing a okay.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: It's it's people not willing to admit that they were wrong, and whatever.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, people have opinions, it's fine to have those opinions.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: I'm not even we said before the season that we didn't, you know, this is a proved year for Zach Kitley, and so far through five games, he's absolutely proving it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Um, we'll get to some much sadder defensive stats here in a bit, but let's stay on this uh on this positivity train for a second, talking about the receivers.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: Because how about that boy coy?
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: All right, boy, coi boy, that boy coy.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: I like what's your favorite nickname?
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: I like the koy fish tweet, by the way.
- 19:43SPEAKER_05: I didn't get a lot of love.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: I did like it.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you didn't why don't you give me a retweet then, dog?
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: What's your problem?
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Well, dude, I wasn't acting like the game.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: It was after the game.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: I I was expecting a little more love.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Like, my it's my wife and I's absolute favorite thing right now is to call him Koi Boy.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: Every time um we see him on the TV, like there's that koy boy.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I also saw uh um uh Rob's uh cowboy coy.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we like we uh Rob Rose Cowboy Koi.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: That one's good.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: I like that too.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: There's some good redhead ones.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Uh I can't remember them right now, but I know Beans has a couple uh with the redhead.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, two touchdowns should have been three touchdowns, if not for that one drop.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: Um I mean that that was a killer, and then the Caleb Douglas one in the third or fourth quarter was a killer.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: Um, and those would have just boosted Barron's stats even more, so his stat line doesn't look as impressive.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: This game would have been a blowout at that point.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: But no, I mean Coy had a great game.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, two touchdowns.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: You can see that connection with him and Barron is going crazy.
- 20:42SPEAKER_05: Um can't I I'll say it every week if I have to.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Josh Kelly is phenomenal.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: Five fifth in receptions in all of FPS, second in the Big 12, 12th in receiving yards in all of FPS, fourth in the Big 12.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: Um, he's a machine, he's electric.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: He's uh 11, eight, eight to eleven catches a game, easy, usually a touchdown.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Didn't catch one in this one, but um, he's just such a weapon.
- 21:08SPEAKER_05: He's a third down guy, he's a down the field guy, he's a throw it to him on a screen, he's gonna make it work.
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's so good, and he's going to be tech.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: If he stays healthy, he's going to be tech's first thousand-yard receiver since Antoine Wesley.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Dang.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, geez, that kind of opens up a poor sore, though.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: A little bit.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Antoine Wesley.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: Um, God, he just why did he leave?
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Um, uh, but dude, yeah, no, uh Josh Kelly, first word that comes to my mind is reliability.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, just say absolute go-to guy, you whenever you need those yards, whenever you need that bailout.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: I feel like Kelly's your guy.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: Like you send it to him, whatever you just need the yards right now.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: And uh he's he's lived up to the billing and then some when it comes to the transfer market, like when it comes to the hype that he uh was receiving in the offseason.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: So I couldn't be happier right now.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: Obviously.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Over all in all, I am pretty happy with the receiving core.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Uh obviously, you know, it it it there it can always be better, but I overall, it's I've it's been pretty satisfactory in my opinion.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: It's been more than that for me.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm thrilled with the receiving core.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: There has been drops, like Caleb Douglas is two straight weeks with some big drops.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, Coy dropped that one in the end zone.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: But um, I I mean, I just like I'm happy, I'm really happy with it.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, even Caleb Douglas last week had a really good game against Arizona State.
- 22:29SPEAKER_05: Like, there's there's nobody on this receiving core that I'm worried about right now.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: It's they're they're all playing really well.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: You obviously have your go-to guy in Kelly, um, and then you have that connection with with Barron and Coy, uh, the roommate connection.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: Um, and uh you're just playing really well offensively right now.
- 22:46SPEAKER_05: I uh like the offensive line, you know, they've been they've been pretty good in the in the pass game or in the uh uh in the rush game, passing wise, pass protection wise, they've been okay.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh they're definitely they've been serviceable.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: Like honestly, I think that Cincinnati defensive line is probably going to be one of the better defensive lines that you play this year.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: Their three-man front is ridiculous and so good.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: And we held our own.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: So we did enough to win the game.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: You put up 44 points on them.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: So I mean, you can't blame them too much.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: And it uh but that's kind of kind of gives more credit to uh Barron Morton as well.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: I feel he's done a pretty good job lately of avoiding the sack.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: So, you know, he's escaped some pretty testy uh waters there.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: And I I like I said, we we would continue to move the ball down the field even with a rough O-line.
- 23:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh last thing on the offense, because this is definitely a piece of it, it is special teams, but your kicking is perfect this year.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: Oh god, dude.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: You're 11 for 11 on field goals, you're 23 for 23 on extra points.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Uh both Gino and Reese Burkhart are absolutely doing well uh in every aspect.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're they've been perfect and they keep on doing this switching.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: This just every you know, you go, you go, you go, you go, and it's working.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: Like keep on going, man.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: I you know, I I'm kind of buying into it.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: You know, I feel like it's I feel like it's a lot different from maybe a QB battle.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: With this, I really feel like it's a really healthy competition because it's honestly like as soon as you miss the other guy is going to play a lot more than you until he misses.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: So I feel like it's a really great motivator in practice to continue to hone your game.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: It's not like your job is safe, you know, in a sense.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: Um, so they've just been electric, dude.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: It's such it's such an underrated part of the game when it comes to field goals.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: And you see you've already you're already here seeing storylines of teams that are blowing it due to missing their field goals.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: So it's it's just amazing to be able to have that reliability of scoring.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Um, because in the in the first opening drive of this game, uh you have that uh O-line uh holding call that like pushes you back and kills the drive as you're humming towards the end zone.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: You're gonna you're going to score a touchdown.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Um and so unfortunately you have to rely on the kicking, but you they made that drive like feasible, like you you got something out of it.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: So as long as you score, you know, at the end of the day, that's that's that's all you can ask for.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: I'm glad those guys are able to do it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: And you know, one of the one of them was 45 yards out with Gino.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: So uh, and obviously they they they miss on their their long, what was it, 50?
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: The 50, yeah, they had a 50 something to tie it.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: So I mean that's that's crazy long, but I would I would feel like Gino, like he'd be like, well, let's mess around and and you know, and you can get that.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: So uh I feel dang good about it, dude.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean I think Burkhardt hit one from like 47 or 48 earlier this season, but um, yeah, and it also affects the it also affects the play calling.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: Like yeah, when you're when you're supposed to go for it on on fourth down, you know, you you maybe think twice about it and just take the points because it's almost an automatic for you with these two kickers.
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: So um that's definitely affected uh Zach Kidley and Joey McGuire's mentality.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: Steven, you know how he said that some games have been decided on miss field goals.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: This was one of those games.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: How about you?
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: So yeah, because Hawks missed two.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: He missed a 30 yard earlier in the game.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: At the end of the second half, yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh it was a the commentating crew was uh cursing the crap out of Cincinnati, dude.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: Did you hear them all game long?
- 26:15SPEAKER_05: I didn't I didn't hear it.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: Never fumbled the ball, never had an interception, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Never missed a field goal.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: I wasn't listening to a lot, a lot of the uh a lot of the announcing, but I did hear him before the pick six where he was like this sourcemean kid, he just doesn't throw picks immediately, throws a pick six.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: I so I I feel for the Bearcats, dude.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a tough lesson.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: You can't do that.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: Do that.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: But dude, seriously, I did I just said it, and here we are.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, this game was decided on field goals, and it's you it's just amazing to have special teams be that automatic.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: So no, no disgruntlement there.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: Probably the best unit on the field, I guess.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, okay, now let's talk about uh the bad part of this Texas Tech team this year, and that's been the defense.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: So, good part, you caused two turnovers.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: You got a fumble, you got a pick six.
- 27:08SPEAKER_05: That was great.
- 27:08SPEAKER_05: You should have two, and you should have had two interceptions.
- 27:11SPEAKER_05: One was just dropped, just straight up dropped by Jordan Sanford, who we found out was uh dealing with a little bit of an injury.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: Uh so you know, I guess you can forgive him a little bit, but I mean, right in your hands, man.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: That was make it happen.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: Make it happen, dude.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: Catch the football.
- 27:26SPEAKER_05: That uh like I get it.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: That's why that's why you're a DB and not a receiver.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: But like, come on.
- 27:33SPEAKER_05: Come on.
- 27:33SPEAKER_05: But no, uh, I mean, when Chapman Lewis went out earlier in the game, Jordan Sanbert had to take over for a lot.
- 27:38SPEAKER_05: He was dealing with an injury, so um, you know, uh it is what it is, but you did cause two turnovers, should have been three.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: But man, your pass rush is just not there right now.
- 27:48SPEAKER_05: You're just not getting enough pressure on these quarterbacks to um make them have to work.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: And Sorsby is not a guy that that you can let that happen.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: And that's why they scored 41 points.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, you just did not get to him quickly enough and often enough to um to put some pressure on him.
- 28:06SPEAKER_05: So that's that's a uh a unit of this team that I'm still pretty darn concerned about as we uh move in further to play some better teams.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, you want to look at this though, is it on the coaching or is this on the injuries?
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Because we are so battered on there, dude.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: We are, and and that should be talked about more.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Joseph Adore was going to be one of your main pass rushers on the edge there, outside linebackers, and he's out for the entire year, didn't play a game this year.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: Uh Dylan Spencer was supposed to kind of break it, have one of those breakout seasons you were hoping for um at the same spot.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: So he's out for the year.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, it's just uh you have a lot of guys that are hit that are injured right now on that defensive line.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: Charles Esters just came back for this.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: His this was his first game, I think, um, of the season.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: So yeah, you've been pretty hurt there, uh, but it's also a lot of youth.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: So these guys have to figure it out, and you're really throwing in a lot of reps to these uh sophomores and redshirt juniors, stuff like that, that are playing for their first time.
- 29:04SPEAKER_05: And um, you're also having to replace two staples of this program in Jalen Hutchings and Tony Bradford.
- 29:11SPEAKER_05: So it's not easy.
- 29:12SPEAKER_05: Um, but you're you're you're trying to do it.
- 29:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, but unfortunately, you you haven't really got it done on that end.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, with the with that defensive performance, you should lose.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Thankfully, we um had a you know a great offensive performance to get us over the edge.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: Obviously, special teams helping as well.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Um, so uh just makes you a little sick to the stomach because you know they they obviously held their own against Arizona State.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: You held Arizona State to just 22 points, and you're winning every single Big 12 game if you can do that, um, in my opinion.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so just just to see it turn around and get doubled the next week, granted, against probably a much more lethal offense in Cincinnati, uh, it's still frustrating, especially when you're at home.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, and that's obviously no discredit to the home crowd.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: The home crowd was electric that for that uh blackout Saturday night in Lubbock was fit the billing.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: So now we can finally drop the whole we can no longer do blackouts in the Jones anymore because we always lose them.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Thank goodness.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Um, and you know, it's funny that to say that because I mean I'm not gonna sit here and dig through the the archives here, but every time we do that, it has to be against like a highly ranked team, right?
- 30:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, and that's what we were talking about.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: You'd be like number five OU in some crap.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're trying to you know build some momentum or whatever for the game and get the guys hyped up, and then you end up just messing yourself up.
- 30:31SPEAKER_05: But um, here's some sad defensive stats for you.
- 30:34SPEAKER_05: So we mentioned number one in the Big 12 in points per game.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're also number one in the Big 12 in points allowed per game uh from the opposing team.
- 30:44SPEAKER_05: Uh we are giving up the second most yards per game in the Big 12 right now.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: We are 10th out of 16 in rushing yards allowed, and we are dead last at 16th in passing yards allowed per game.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: Um uh it's not good.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: It's not good.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: This is Kingsbury level stuff right here that we are uh reverting back to.
- 31:05SPEAKER_05: And um you think about we have a five-game sample size for this season right now.
- 31:10SPEAKER_05: Three of those five, we've had a really bad defensive performance now with Cincinnati, with ACU, and with Washington State.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, I just it this is kind of what happens with the transition where you're playing all these young players and then you have all these injuries.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: Um, it's it's kind of natural when you think about it to go through a bit of a transition defensively, but it's still concerning.
- 31:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, moving forward.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: You you're getting into the heat of Big 12 play, and you're about to play a Big 12 team that has a really efficient and good offense here.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, and and you need on the road.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Oh, you need some of these guys back that are hurt, and you need oh, you just need some help right now in that secondary because it's not good.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, that's the obviously clearly the biggest weak spot in this defense right now.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I didn't I wasn't that upset with the uh the rushing defense against Cincinnati.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, he you hold both receivers to uh 50 and below.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: Um no, no, you actually hold both all receivers below 50 yards.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Obviously, there were some injuries there, so that that that comes into into uh factor there and source speed kind of burns you on his legs a bit.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: But it was truly any time the air ball went airborne, I was like, here we go.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: Because it's it felt like every single pass was a completion.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Um so and a lot of for a lot of them were for long too.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: Uh so they really they really they sped up the field faster than you did most of the time on offense.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: And that was largely in part due to our our soft, soft back.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: So um again, it's I I I this I if y'all on Twitter, me and everybody, all the other tech fans tweeting about the game, it really did feel like vintage Kingsbury, um, uh vintage Kingsbury game.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: And you look at the score, and that's what it looks like as well.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, this this is this totally looks like a Cliff Kingsbury Big 12 game only without the uh feature greatest of all-time quarterback uh and insane receivers on the side, you know.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: So uh just obviously a much more balanced game.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: But that's that's really what it felt like and looked like.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: To play the excuse game, you didn't have your number one corner again.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: Braylon Lice did not play this game.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, you were playing a redshirt freshman in Macho Stevenson, who made his fair share of mistakes in the Cincinnati game.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: Um, Mo Horn was forced to guard Xavier Henderson, who was one of the best receivers in the Big 12.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: Um, uh, like we mentioned earlier, Chapman Lewis got hurt pretty early on in the game.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Um so you know, you're you're dealing with injuries and stuff like that.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: But when you see a bad passing defense, it's it's not just on the secondary.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Some people think it's completely on the safeties in the corners for not doing their job, but you're also not getting any pressure on the quarterback, and you're giving him enough time for those guys to get open.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: So you can't force any hesitation of mistakes on the quarterback.
- 33:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's twofold, man.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Like it's uh like the secondary is not doing a good job.
- 33:56SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to defend them or anything, but uh you need the entire defense to come together here and start making some plays and getting some pressure and um you know, helping each other out because they are not right now.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: And and quite frankly, you're pretty fortunate to be two-o with how bad this defense has been.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: You know, I I kind of think in my head that these guys should probably be worse than they are, you know, given the youth, given the uh given the city, given the the the uh situation they've been placed in.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: And I really do, and I don't want to just sound like a uh a sunshine blower here, but I really do feel like since you have a guy with the veterancy of DeRooter, that you're able to at least clobber together something even doable right now, you know, kind of thing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Because I really do feel like if this was a Kingsbury or Wells team the other night, I really think like you lose that game.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: And I feel like Cincinnati makes you look foolish in that because I thought I honest, honestly, in that first quarter, I thought I was about to get ugly, and I'm sure a lot of us did.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: They they made us look stupid very quickly.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Um, and especially with the way we opened up the game on offense, I really feel like the energy wasn't there, but I credit to the coaches for being able to lock in and get it done with the players.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: So I truly am a W as a W guy.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: The defense has potential.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: You saw it on the pick six play.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: You finally got some freaking pressure on the quarterback, and you made him throw a bad play, and then AJ McCarty made a play on the ball, and then you get a pick six.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, this defense has potential, it's just a really youthful group that is still learning how to do stuff in a consistent way.
- 35:31SPEAKER_05: And uh we'll see, we'll see.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: I they did get better, they've gotten better from game one to game five, like except game five, you're dealing with all these injuries, you know.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Like you you need to get healthy and you need to get more consistent.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, and hopefully that comes with more reps and as you continue playing and everything, all that business.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, it's fun.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Steven, the last dub of the game is our social media team and the fire content they're putting out.
- 35:59SPEAKER_05: That was that was great.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: The chili, the chili and the tortilla, and then throwing it away.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: That was that was primo.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: You know, I was just talking to Annie, uh, and she's like, Do you think it's as hard to get the tortillas in as it used to be?
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, Textech is playing the tortilla thing up.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_05: I you know, you know, when Joey got there, he's like, Stop.
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: No, bring on the tortillas.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I I'm sure you still have to sneak them in, but I'm sure it's like uh we didn't see anything kind of thing at that the at the security gate now, honestly.
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: So yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: I I mean it wasn't hard to get them in when we were there, so I'm sure it's not hard dip into your behind, you know, into the crevices.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: No, well, that makes it funnier when the when the opposing team actually like takes a bite out of it, and you're like that.
- 36:44SPEAKER_05: That's hilarious.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: That was that's gross.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: That's gross.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: Way to go, guy.
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: That's nasty.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: Hey, before we leave Cincinnati in the dust here, um, I just want to get your your feels here.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: How good a Big 12 opponents do you think we have beaten in Arizona State in Cincinnati?
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: I was thinking about this earlier today.
- 37:05SPEAKER_05: I think they're both middle of the pack.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't think, yeah, I actually I don't I I could potentially see Arizona State still finishing bottom four-ish.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: I hate that they didn't play this past Saturday.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, we'll learn more about them as the season goes, but I think they're a serviceable team.
- 37:20SPEAKER_05: I said that last week.
- 37:21SPEAKER_05: I think they're fine.
- 37:22SPEAKER_05: I don't think they're a world beater, but I I I think they're solid.
- 37:25SPEAKER_05: Cincinnati, I think they're gonna be probably a seventh to eighth finish in the Big 12.
- 37:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 37:33SPEAKER_05: I think Cincinnati's for sure a bowl team.
- 37:35SPEAKER_05: I think Arizona State's kind of on that line.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: They could finish with four wins, they could finish with seven wins, and I wouldn't really be surprised at either outcome there.
- 37:42SPEAKER_05: They're still in a transition, so I mean, making a bowl in the second season of uh of Dillingham would be a a success by all means.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: So um, no, I I think really highly of that Cincinnati team.
- 37:54SPEAKER_05: I think they're going to beat some teams this year, especially when they're at home.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: Like I they're a tough out.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely, dude.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: And and apparently Nippard is actually quite the environment.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Um so it's I I I think they're gonna, I think they're gonna uh break some hearts in the season.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: I don't really think they're gonna surprise people.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: Um, and I'm not I'm not just saying that to juice up our fan base.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I think they should have been undefeated rolling into our game.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's it's I I think we beat some good teams, dude.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: I just think we uh unfortunately beat teams that were expected to be at the bottom.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: So we're not we're getting no love, we're getting no votes.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: We're apparently the only four and one P5 team to get zero votes in the AP polls right now.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: That's fine.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, I we're not a top 25 team right now.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: I think you if you go and win a Tucson, there's no excuse.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: We have to be top 25 at that point, in my opinion.
- 38:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the stats don't back it up and the results don't really back it up.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: So I don't I don't understand how an AP voter who hasn't watched Texas Deck every second, you know, would would give us a vote.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: So I'm not worried about it.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: But Don.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Is Don Don't I don't think he has an AP vote anymore.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: What?
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's oh yeah, you're right.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: I think he I think he's stopped.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: I think they switch they switch him out pretty consistently.
- 39:03SPEAKER_05: You know, they want to get some variety in there.
- 39:05SPEAKER_05: Um but let's move on to this week's opponent, which is the Arizona Wildcats.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: A good team Arizona, three and one on the year.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: Their one loss was to Kansas State, where they got absolutely hammered.
- 39:22SPEAKER_05: And um it was in Manhattan, so that is but they go and beat New Mexico to start off the year 61-39.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: They go and beat northern Arizona after that 22 to 10, then they lose at Kansas State 31 to 7, and then they go and beat Utah in Utah for the first time since like I don't know, 2019, I think, or 2018.
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: Last time Utah lost a home game.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: So what?
- 39:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it was crazy.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, really.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, they they showed out last game.
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: I didn't get to watch it, but I I did see the highlights um a few minutes ago, and uh they're they're good, man.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: This Arizona team is a good team despite the big loss in Manhattan, but Manhattan's a really tough place to play, and Kansas State's kind of proven that they're still one of those teams.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, they absolutely are, 100%.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Uh BY BYU apparently is just a wagon.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: So um yeah.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Oh no, no, you what were we about to say?
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: No, I was just gonna say, uh, and we'll get to this when we talk about the Big 12 as a whole, but BYU, I mean, they let Baylor get right back into it, and Baylor's not good.
- 40:28SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: I I I don't think there's a clear team in the Big 12 right now.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, with the loss with Utah's loss to Arizona, that like sealed the deal because everyone was saying Utah's a class above, which was fair.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, now it's it's especially when they lose at home, you know, to to Air to an Arizona team that was not that kind of was looking very shaky.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: People are kind of counting them out at this point from their preseason hype.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: Um, and now it's just kind of out the window.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: But uh I honestly, dude, I'm as glad as I was to see the youths eat some humble pie, especially it's which was funny because the team that was that drug their feet the most from the Pac-12 lost the team that was ready to just get the the heck into the Big 12.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: You know, the Arizona seems the most bought into the new Big 12.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: Um, while Utah is obviously their fans are being a little prima donna's about it.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: Um, so it was really funny to see uh Arizona City go in and do that.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm not gonna lie though, I wanted the youths to win.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: Because I yes, because I wanted Arizona to continue to lose hope.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: I wanted the fans to continue to lose hope because now we have to deal with a Tucson Stadium, that'll probably be full.
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: You know, now the fans are gonna be bought back in.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a nighttime game.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: The desert will be nice and cool, so everyone's gonna be there in full force.
- 41:46SPEAKER_03: And yeah, it's it's gonna be a tough environment to go into.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, because I I really think Arizona fans think they're back.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: Like the the hope is the the lightning's back in the bottle, ready to roll, we're undefeated in the conference.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's it's gonna be a really tough game now.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: I think it's probably the marquee matchup of the Big 12 this week.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: I haven't looked at the other ones, but I I can't see any others that have um two undefeated Big 12 teams uh thinking that they could mess around and surprise people right now.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Arizona's a good team.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: Um they have some, and it's highlighted by their two best players, which are their quarterback and their receiver.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: So uh Noah Fafita has been good this year.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: His stats actually don't pop out to you as much as you would think, with how some people talk about him, but he is nifty.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, in the pocket, he's one of those guys who can escape and make a play.
- 42:38SPEAKER_05: So you really got to lock him down.
- 42:40SPEAKER_05: Um, but he's uh with his number one target in uh in McMillan at receiver there.
- 42:46SPEAKER_05: Uh uh those two just have a connection that's unlike.
- 42:49SPEAKER_05: I mean, they played high school together, uh, they're going to college, and now McMillan, I think, is a top five receiver in the nation right now, probably gonna be a first-round pick in the NFL this year.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: So this passing attack is deadly and can absolutely slice and dice you with just those two guys.
- 43:05SPEAKER_05: So um, not having Braylon Lux would be a major, major issue for Texas Tech here.
- 43:12SPEAKER_05: Not that Mo Horn has done a bad job as the number one corner, but because that puts your number two corner at a really youthful player on this year's team.
- 43:21SPEAKER_05: And uh, you just really need Braylon Lux back for this one.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: I I can't stress that enough.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, we really are like running into a worst-case scenario when it comes to an offense.
- 43:31SPEAKER_03: You're you're like, like you just said, you're you're working with a golden duo of QB and wide receiver, and you're gonna be in this hostile environment uh with a bunch of young boys who aren't used to being on the road and running to these big stadiums yet.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Um, so it makes me nervous, dude.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: I to be honest with you, I don't feel that great about it.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Um, but apparently we're getting some love on some statistical uh outputs here.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: Some computer rankings are putting us ahead, and Vegas right now has us losing by.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: field goal and i'll take that all day like i i like that i like those odds uh personally but um not gonna lie to you man i i think this this i don't think this i'll tell you what this won't be this will not be a uh kevin sumlin versus matt wells tucson arizona game well thank god on all counts i know everybody's happy about that even the wildcats are like yeah thank god you know so i remember that that covet game that was gross there's like two people in the stands dude i don't remember that i was i was working at the time and i rushed back to the hotel to watch that game and they just spit in my face against a terrible arizona team just kicked our butt like oh my god that was brutal uh and you had colin schooler i think transfer from arizona correct yeah i think you're right oh my that was was yeah that was tough uh but anyway this is 2024 and not 2019 and now a conference game and now a conference game apparently so again might I say border conference hashtag border conference always hashtag text tech dominates border conference never forget border conference bring back the border conference i've said it for years you know it the big 12 should have done some sort of like the border conference um revived gotta do like some like you know mexican standoff theme you know that like the border conference high noon or something you know like or the border conference standout a standoff or something that's that would have been cool that would have been rad get a cultural battle the battle for whose Mexican food is the best clearly it's it's Texas it's it's clearly the state of Texas dude oh my god we blow them out of the water it's not even close I bet there's just like some California bullshit that invaded in I'm sure a lot of Arizona people people that like wanted to tune into a tech podcast are like how about you shut your dirty mouth in California it's like let's just put black beans on everything get out of my face with that no it's not hard beans cheese tortilla not hard they make it hard but uh but I will say dude um I think it'll be a fun game I don't think it'll blow be a blowout either way I think um I really think so many of these tech sec games are gonna be close be a win or lose um and I right now I am leaning towards an L.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm gonna be honest with you just because of Joey McGuire's road record it can't be ignored and now you have an Arizona team who's kind of putting it together like you just did something really really hard in Salt Lake City.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: Maybe you got Utah on a bad night you probably did get Utah on a bad night um then we got them without their leading quarterback of course that never helps um but uh you did get them on a bad night so maybe you can find some silver lining there but you you did something incredibly difficult.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: I mean Utah just went to still water with the same team in one so I mean obviously Oklahoma State is having their own issues with that uh we can talk about the general state of the Big 12 in a second but um all respect to Arizona dude uh I I think this is a really fun matchup it feels very natural uh as this as a Big 12 game it doesn't feel forced at all and uh I'm really excited about it.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: No, it's fun.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: I'm glad we're playing the Arizona schools again.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Like this was one of the parts of the new Big 12 that I was really happy about.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: And yeah it just makes sense and it's gonna be even crazier come basketball season with this with this school but we're talking football right now and uh um no I mean I'm gonna disagree with you.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: I think this could be ugly.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: Um yeah I not not you know Texas Tech has some momentum nothing I'll I'll say this nothing will surprise me in the result of this game.
- 47:48SPEAKER_05: If we lose by 40 points I'm actually not going to be surprised because of how we played on the road and our beat up defense right now going up against a really solid offense.
- 48:06SPEAKER_05: And they need to prove that to me for uh for me to predict a a Texas Tech even being competitive in this one.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: I have to disagree with you dude I think our offense is too good to be beaten that bad like even if we could just get slaughtered on uh defense I really don't see how we stay that low unless unless the unless the uh the kickoff time which is going to be brutal brutal we more so for our players than the fans um I that kickoff time may mess with us a bit but I seriously if we have Taj Brooks if we have everybody healthy on on offense I I don't see how we could possibly not stay out of the end zone.
- 48:46SPEAKER_05: I mean Taj is the difference uh Washington State you don't have him and now you do this is a better team than Wazoo too.
- 48:52SPEAKER_05: This uh this yeah oh yeah this is a better team than Washington State but and second game of the season you can say whatever you need but uh no Taj was the big this is the biggest thing yeah but no 10 p.m kickoff central time uh God's time and guys drink lots of water saturday I feel for the Texas Tech fans because Sunday is going to be awful for everybody everybody here that is a Texas tech fan Sunday is going to be awful crawl through those church doors.
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: Guess what you're waking up at eight or nine you know probably for most people and you have to wait uh 14 hours until kickoff yikes i uh Steven the silver lining here is you won last Saturday so you're not like just sitting in this miserable stew of unhappy like you are undefeated you are you are number one in the Big 12.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: I will say this is the perfect weekend to distract yourself like go do some go be productive yes on this set like this is the college football Saturday that you can be productive like what we're doing we're going to look at houses on Saturday.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: So like we're going to y'all we're going like all day you know we're gonna go look at houses we're gonna go do this and distract ourselves and then finally at night when we're thinking we're gonna settle down maybe potentially get a bottle of wine it's like no bust out the beer Texas Tech is on let's go there's never been a game more primed and ready for an espresso martini than this one.
- 50:23SPEAKER_05: So gentlemen throw into the store throw on a little Sabrina Carpenter good song good song pretty good song it if you don't have an espresso machine I know those are everywhere in America now right everyone has an espresso machine um go to HEB I also love how you say espresso it's not espresso it's espresso it's espresso oh I'm sorry you're saying italy how about you go kiss my ass um you go to H E B you go and get some H E B cafe concentrate concentrate all right if you're not if you don't if you don't have concentrate whatever you can Starbucks makes it concentrate you get Starbucks concentrate and you go home throw that in the fridge get some vodka get some Kahlua and you're gold seriously it's that easy equal parts uh what it's it would be uh I don't know man I've never met an espresso martini uh one shot of vodka one shot of Kahlua and you're you're good that's it okay you're golden that's it seriously that's all it is everybody enjoy enjoy your late night Saturday uh because 10 p.m kickoff that is just mean that's mean of of Fox to do that to us um it's the one downfall about having the Pac-12 teams in our conference now is these late kickoff times this is ridiculous 10 p.m kickoff is against everything that should be right in this sport.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: I I know I think Arizona is some weird thing where they actually use Pacific time even though they're mountain time it's it's bizarre.
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: No they should be an hour behind us.
- 52:03SPEAKER_05: What it is is Arizona doesn't do daylight savings.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: So that's what the year that's what it's half the year they're on west coast Pacific time and half the year they're on mountain time this is one of those stupid times where they're on west coast time.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: I was just in Boise Idaho where it's like north and south like they do mountain time or I was on mountain time in Boise but no Arizona was uh uh an hour after us and it's like this is so stupid so stupid but actually Arizona kind of does things right daylight savings is stupid daylight savings is stupid hell no you keep that tradition alive just to be annoying and weird it's stupid that's what we do in America damn it it's our thing we're gonna do it our thing the only state in the union that's actually right on this yeah maybe we should send them back to Mexico sure let's do that okay whoever loses goes back to Mexico so Steven you know how oh you hey now remember the Alamo damn it right so always will never forget um so I was like you know as I said this might be the biggest big 12 of the game of the of the week um and it probably is uh the only one that even comes close is West Virginia at Oklahoma State um technically our game is a bigger deal because it's two undefeated teams meeting while well that's also like a do or die for Oklahoma State if Oklahoma State loses that one and goes to 0 and 3 dude Oklahoma State would go to die.
- 53:24SPEAKER_05: I think it's already dead they might be they might be they're pretty bad.
- 53:29SPEAKER_03: They're pretty bad dude I'm not but every time I do this with Oklahoma State they still have my gundy as their coach and that dude just no change does not my gundy that dude just just he doesn't not make a bowl game he's going to find a way he's the best coach in the conference and I fully my bad my bad i will I would even I would potentially fight with Kleiman at this point no no no no no it's gundy I would it's gonna no dude no climan has not had the career that Gundy has well no he hasn't but that doesn't mean in 2024 that he's not a better coach than Mike Gundy I think uh gundy's the best probably I'm pulling this out of my butt but I'm I'm I would feel very safe saying that Gundy's the best coach that Oklahoma State has ever had.
- 54:13SPEAKER_05: Oh duh.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: So I think it automatically puts no that doesn't no because because Oklahoma State's a better program than K State.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: But you're you're taking peak Gundy and saying this is now who he is.
- 54:25SPEAKER_05: Pete Gundy is like so long though it's it it we're still in peak gundy no no no this is your thing 12 championship then two years ago this is your thing with Patterson too you're taking the peak of Gary Patterson and you're saying this is the coach he is every single year.
- 54:42SPEAKER_05: There's no way that he can do wrong he's always this he can't that's not it's not with gundy Gundy has not been a good coach this year.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: He hasn't Patterson was a TCU's gundy and they blew it they didn't just stomach some bad years like they should have I'm not gonna agree with you on this I think coaches get I don't think I don't think coaches are always their peak.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: You always think coaches are their peak rare rare disagreement on the talking tech podcast I think Gundy obviously I think uh Oklahoma State can never fire Gundy but I felt the same way about T with Patterson.
- 55:15SPEAKER_05: Well that's a different conversation though yes it's a different conversation though you're trying to say that Mike Gundy in 2024 is going to be peak Mike Gundy that's not true.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: Well let's okay NIL has completely talked changed the game when it comes to Mike Gundy talk to any poke fan and they say the problem's in the coordinators right now the problem is with the offensive coordinator who hires the coordinators yes I I understand that but it's it's probably time for him to make a change is my point.
- 55:44SPEAKER_05: I yeah I would assume that he hasn't done a good job either this year with this Oklahoma State team.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: I mean he's the one he's the one who put the trust in Alan Bowman to be his quarterback.
- 55:53SPEAKER_05: Do you know what he's the one who didn't recruit the good offensive lineman like this is on Gundy that you're not gonna hire a doctor to be on your team are you kidding me right Dr.
- 56:03SPEAKER_03: Bowman but but no no see this is this is this is the thing um my Gundy is consistently awesome and I am just glad that this year they are finally mortal okay because they're they're rarely mortal they're finally feeling what it's like to be a Texas tech fan sometimes okay because I feel like these are two programs that are very much on level theoretically so it's it's I'm just glad I'm I'm pretty happy to see this happen.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: You know I'm not I don't feel great for my brethren across the Red River because you know obviously you want them to have a really great year after what happened but it's I kind of I kind of like seeing that they actually have a chink in the armor to be honest.
- 56:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah but yeah I'm I mean I like it too believe you me like I want to make this game in still water later this season a whole lot easier than what it could be.
- 56:57SPEAKER_05: Uh but yeah Oklahoma State does not look good.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: I I mean I'm never gonna like assume that we're just gonna cream Oklahoma State because of Mike Gundy but he it's he hasn't been fantastic this year with this year's team.
- 57:11SPEAKER_05: Like it hasn't been a good a well coached team.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: So um I'm just saying this stuff changes.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: Dude I I just whenever you have a whenever you have like a legend as your coach you take your licks and I really think TCU is starting to realize that they should have just taken their licks um and I really hope that Joe McGuire is a coach that we eventually just have to take our licks with because that means we've had a really really great time with him you know yeah no yeah that I mean that's down the road but no of course that's or or you just hire a better coach.
- 57:41SPEAKER_05: I'm just forecasting no what no you can at Alcama State you cannot do better than Mike Gundy it really no I'm not saying that yet I'm not saying that with my gundy yet but I'm talking about the Patterson situation I mean it was getting stale his recruiting was not doing well at TCU.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: There was a lot of downhill going on you're seeing that with Mac Brown at North Carolina right now.
- 58:02SPEAKER_05: Like Mac Brown's a legend he's an all-time coach he's one of three current FBS coaches that has a national championship and yet his team has looked like garbage because he's kind of losing it a little bit Mac Brown's not a good comparison.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Because Mac Brown they hired out of retirement he was still he still led North Carolina to some good seasons and stuff he's still a good head coach he's not a good coach anymore but he's getting really old Mike Gundy is like younger than our dads dude I'm just saying it's comparable I I'm not saying Mike Gundy's there yet I'm more about the Patterson situation.
- 58:38SPEAKER_05: There's a reason Gary Patterson has not been hired as a head coach anywhere.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: There's a reason I no I I think I think the reason for that is he just really hasn't wanted to be I think he's having dreams he stayed in college football though.
- 58:50SPEAKER_05: But in a much much much lesser role there's not much less there's not a guy that is this competitive that does this for so long but just gets out of it.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: No hold on let's just say he didn't get a head coaching job which obviously g5 teams would have been like name the price right now obviously at at minimum g5 teams then you don't think there's a single team in the entire nation that wouldn't want him as their defensive coordinator not one.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying that he doesn't want to go be a defensive coordinator.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: He wants to be a head coach because you don't think he wants to just enjoy his life a little bit no I think he doesn't want to take a coordinator position.
- 59:30SPEAKER_05: You don't think that he's maybe a little like over it no after he got fired I don't think guys just get over it like that I don't think those I don't think those competitors and those guys that's they've they've lived they're they've lived a certain lifestyle for their entire life and then they just stop that's rare that's exactly my point he's given his life to like 10 plus what's more than 10 what how long has he been at TCU 2000 what who Patterson Gary yeah oh I think he was like 2003 or something 2005 yeah I don't know he was there a long time he gave like 15 years of his life and they let him go after a few bad seasons.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: You don't think he would be like you don't think you'd be a little jade and be like you know what now I'll just find I'll take an analyst position make a little money but I'm gonna enjoy my life just enjoy some time with my my my wife my grandkids and just you know chill you don't think you really don't think that would be no because I because he immediately hopped into college football immediately why then why would you not be a coordinator?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: Why would you accept an analyst position but not a because you've been a head coach for 20 plus years.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: You really don't think g5 teams wanted to give Gary Patterson a job I don't think he wanted to coach in the G5.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: I think he wants I think he wants a head coach job at a power four position and that was not something teams are willing to offer agree to disagree but speaking of the whole thing that got us here we're talking about Neil Brown going to Silwater and there's a lot of there's a lot of division in the West Virginia fan base of trusting or not trusting the climb.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_05: I trust the climb always will you're a climb truster i'm a climate i'm more of a climb truster than than an Oklahoma state truster this year are you saying that dude Oklahoma states look bad bad bad like their offensive line stinks Alan Bowman stinks their defense stinks like they're not good Oklahoma State's not good now can they turn it around potentially I don't know they still have Ollie Gordon he's a good player you know but they got a lot of stuff to clean up if they want to be even halfway decent all right let's make this weirdly long episode even longer real quick so U of H at TCU who wins TCU U of H is dog shit U of H kind of messes around on D though what do you mean?
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: They haven't scored a point in three weeks it is horrible look it'd be really funny if the couches won though yes it'd be funny it'd be so funny it's not gonna happen all right West Virginia Oklahoma State West Virginia Wow in snowwater yeah I think so I take the pokes okay I mean it is do or die for them I think so they kind of have to win this in the U of H TCU game I'll take U of H.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_04: Now you're just messing around you haven't watched the second of Houston this year.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_03: They're horrible state game before the uh the tech game come on they're horrible all right Baylor at Iowa State Iowa State Ames they're gonna kill them Dave Rand is gonna get fired after this week I think Iowa State is probably under overrated but um their offense is not good.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: No I mean Iowa Iowa State definitely has their flaws but this you know why this is the reason that Dave Aranda gets fired?
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: Because Baylor's on a bye week next week just like uh just like Texas Tech before that game they they're gonna fire Dave Randa and they're gonna give you know whatever interim that they hire at least a week and a half to prepare for you know to take over the team.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: That's what's you don't think you don't you think it's not too early?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_03: They're not gonna fire him though if they haven't no I don't think so.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_05: I think they'd fire him.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_05: If if they go into aims and get beat by 35 which I think they're going to I think they're going to I think that Baylor team is spent those players are done they don't want to play for him anymore.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_05: Um and I think yeah I I would be very after that big comeback in Waco yeah yeah all right probably the uh a huge game for the Big 12 in general UCF at Florida I haven't watched any Florida UCF is weird because they just got boomed by Colorado I'll go UCF still um in this one but yeah I mean I don't I don't know I have a lot of questions about UCF now.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah I mean if the fans are starting to hit warm seat on Gus I think it's a little premature in my opinion.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_03: I don't think a UCF program can afford to be hot hopscotching coaches but um uh yeah no I I I think I think the Knights get it done.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_03: I think the Knights will be way more motivated than than the Gators will be in that in Gainesville there.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: So that'd be a big game for the for the Big 200 it's in Gainesville?
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm okay but I mean Florida Florida sucks dude they're bad yeah yeah no I I think so but UCF looked pretty bad against Colorado yeah I I I think I think Colorado might be feistier than we give them credit for um next one uh KU versus Arizona State where is it and uh to uh to be oh yeah Arizona State yeah no I I I go that way as well I think Kansas looks completely different since they lost uh uh their offensive coordinator I think it's Kotal Nicky I think is how you say his name um yeah where'd he go uh he went uh he went to Penn Penn State no Penn State Penn State okay he went to Penn State but um no they look uh they look like they are good for the first quarter or so you know in their scripted plays but then as soon as like Jalen Daniels has to figure out what to do on offense or the offensive coordinator and like Jeff Grimes has been terrible too so that was a terrible hire he was terrible at Baylor.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_03: Um yeah I I think Kansas is kind of finally coming back down to earth on are you everything are you telling me that Kansas hired Baylor's offensive coordinator this past season uh short week for the Big 12 a lot of appears to be a lot of bye weeks um but yeah uh I I think we're the biggest game and I think that's probably why we're the one that's uh we're the ones that aren't big fox so is Baylor Iowa State but that's because I would say it's ranked fourth.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: Um uh he's he's on ESPN as well, but but yeah, okay.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just wanna wrap it up.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_05: I wanna rail off the preseason poll right now.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_05: Um Utah was picked first, Kansas State was picked second, Oklahoma State picked third, Kansas was picked fourth, and Arizona was picked fifth.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: Um the three teams that are currently 2-0 in the Big 12 are BYU, Colorado, and your Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Um, Iowa State, Arizona, West Virginia are also one and oh in the Big 12 right now.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_05: Um everybody that was picked uh first, second, third, and fourth are below those teams right now in the preseason poll.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_05: This is the Big 12.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_05: We're I don't know what the hell's going on.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be every single year for the rest of the Big 12's life, I think.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: Um which is awesome.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: Don't get me wrong.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_03: Um, that makes it way more fun, and that's good.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_03: That's where all the uh all the ball knowers, all the non-casual big uh college football fans understand that the fun's had in the Big 12, which is very cool.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: Um but so how do you dude, how do you feel about Colorado?
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: Obviously, that's that's the big talking point in the Big 12 right now.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: It it's it's in it's inescapable.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_03: I'll always say that Deion Higher was a smart hire from the sheer amount of eyes that gotten on the program.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: But now, is he messing around and actually putting together a dangerous team?
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: Look, it's kind of funny that two out of the three.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, you could argue BYU's defense hasn't been phenomenal, but you could argue that two of the three two and oh teams in the Big 12 right now have just serious flaws with them.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech being their defense, offense, uh uh Colorado being their offensive line and their running attack, uh, and their defense too.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's not phenomenal, but I I don't know.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_05: I don't know what to think of Colorado.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, they they definitely have really good players.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, Shadur Sanders is a guy.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_05: Uh Travis Hunter is absolutely a Heisman candidate.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: Like he's the best player in the country.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's ridiculous.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_05: I think that undoubtedly, he's so ridiculous.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_05: So they have players, it's just, you know, can they put it all together?
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_05: Can that offensive line Shadur Sanders has been sacked like 14 times this year?
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, they pass a lot, but that's but yeah, their offensive line is horrible.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_05: It it's straight up terrible.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, I I think Colorado will come down back down to earth, just like I think Texas Tech will probably come down to Earth.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm hoping not.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_05: I'm hoping the schedule kind of treats Texas Tech well, which it looks like it should.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, it's uh yeah, both teams are very, very unknown still after being 2-0.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, a lot of people are like starting to think about maybe uh Arlington hopes for Colorado after the first win.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: You know, it's that was gonna happen.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, they got it happened after the TCU game last year when they beat them.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_05: They're like, oh, Colorado, that's it, going all the way.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_03: But dude, I'd be lying to you if I wasn't surprised with the results in Orlando.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: I was, I was, I thought UCF was a better team than that.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_05: Um, and Colorado really put it on them offensively.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_05: So I'd that was another game I didn't get a chance to watch.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_05: So I'd have to go back and really watch it to give you a good take on it.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I mean, Colorado's playing well, Shatter's playing well, um, and they're finally, you know, doing doing consistently pretty well.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: And I mean, even with this the smaller stadium, like that that UCF home environment's nothing to scoff at.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_03: Soundhouse, man.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_03: Exactly, man.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: It's got this nickname for a reason.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_03: Um, we don't even have a nickname.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: And uh, so they they uh they they just went in there and just made them look stupid.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_03: But that probably wraps it up on that side of the ball unless you have anything else to talk about, dude.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: No, let's go ahead and finish off with the song of the week.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_03: I agree, I agree.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_03: All right, dude.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_03: For my song of the week, I am going to go with the Midlands, you know, the band Midland, the the uh frontman is also a city from Arizona, went to the University of Arizona and gradually and uh did a the hype video, preseason hype video for Arizona.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_03: His name is Mark.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_03: Let's see what I see.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_03: This wise ratch.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, no way I'm saying that right.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_03: But anyway, I am going to go with a song from them because we are playing them.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_03: I think it's really funny that they have a band named after a town in Texas, in Midland, and they base all their songs off about Texas, you know.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna a little bit of a funny thing there.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_03: So, but it's a really great song.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_03: Actually, really big this band, even with all the controversy that surrounds them, um, with how genuine they are.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go with 14 gears, Adobe House versions.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_03: Midland.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_07: I've got 14 gears to get you back in mouth.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: I think it's Mark Weistratch.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_05: I think it's how you say it.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_05: Could be wrong.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_05: I've never never heard it before.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_05: It's a good song, dog.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_05: Right on, man.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_05: Well, cool.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_05: I do like Midland.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_05: I think they have some good songs.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_05: Midland's good theme.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, my song of the week, I will stay with the country theme, like we did last week on a double country.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_06: Wow, shocker.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_05: Shocker, who would have thought Texas Tech Podcast.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: Um my song of the week is a newer one.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's off of uh Cody Jinx's new album, which is phenomenal, by the way.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_05: Listen to it on the plane home.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_05: Um, my song of the album called.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_05: Uh oh man, now you're putting me on the spot.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_05: Hold on, hold on.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_03: You'd suck as a politician.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_05: I would.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_05: That'd be horrible.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: Backside of 30 is the name of the.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, we're we're into the front side of 30 soon.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_03: We're yeah, we're well not yet.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_05: We're at the backside of 20, guys.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, all right.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_03: My bad, my bad.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_05: My song of the week is relevant to how Texas Tech is played over uh these first five weeks.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_05: And the song is called We Get By by Cody Jinx.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_05: It's a it's a good anthem, and it also makes a lot of sense for how Texas Tech is played.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_05: Listen, we get by, we get some wins, and we get by.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_05: Maybe we're not absolutely thrilled with everything, but hey, it's a dub.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: We get by Cody Jinx.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_04: And I get by.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_04: We all get by.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_04: By the grace of God, we all get by.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_03: I am 100% okay with that being the anthem of Tex Tech.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_03: We get by.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_03: Like if we get by every single time, no complaints.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: Don't care from me, dude.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_03: None.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_03: We don't care.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_03: Dub is a dub.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_03: Dub is absolutely a dub.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
