- 0:00Speaker 1: 106.7 Light FM with Cubby and Christine in the morning.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Christine is off today. My co-host is sick today. She's very,
- 0:06Speaker 1: very upset, John Legend.
- 0:07Speaker 2: We need a new co-host.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You're it.
- 0:09Speaker 2: John Legend's here.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Welcome back to the friendly confines of 106.7 Light FM.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's been a hot minute. We were just talking before
- 0:18Speaker 1: the interview started. I first met you in 2004, Ordinary People,
- 0:21Speaker 1: your first single. Wasn't even out yet. And you came
- 0:24Speaker 1: and performed for a bunch of DJs when I was
- 0:26Speaker 1: working at Z100 to showcase Z100. your stuff and man,
- 0:29Speaker 1: how far you've come. Do you remember that moment?
- 0:31Speaker 2: I remember it.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I remember, uh, the, uh, uh, president of the label
- 0:35Speaker 3: or head of promotions at the label.
- 0:37Speaker 2: He would, uh, take me around to.
- 0:39Speaker 3: These radio stations and, uh, I would just, you know,
- 0:44Speaker 3: let people know what I was working on.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And, uh, I was trying to be heard. I was
- 0:48Speaker 2: trying to get my music out there.
- 0:49Speaker 3: And I think the album wasn't even out yet, but, uh,
- 0:52Speaker 3: I was like, Hey, I'll do what I need to
- 0:54Speaker 3: do to make sure the music gets out. And we've
- 0:57Speaker 3: still got to go out there and let people know
- 0:59Speaker 3: that the music is coming out. And I'm so excited
- 1:03Speaker 3: that we've got a new project. It's called Muse, produced
- 1:06Speaker 3: by Pharrell Williams. And I'm so proud of what we've made.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And tell me all the.
- 1:11Speaker 1: People that inspired you for this album.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Oh, we talked about Nina Simone. We talked about Nat
- 1:16Speaker 3: King Cole. We talked about Marvin Gaye. We talked about
- 1:19Speaker 3: Frank Sinatra. So there's some elements of those kind of
- 1:23Speaker 3: classics and standards. And then we wanted to do all
- 1:27Speaker 3: that with kind of a hip hop foundation. So 808 Beats,
- 1:31Speaker 3: hip hop drums.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And reading also the songs on Muse, they kind of
- 1:35Speaker 1: follow an imagined relationship through attraction, commitment.
- 1:38Speaker 2: And betrayal. Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 3: We wanted to make it kind of cinematic. So the
- 1:42Speaker 3: storytelling is really interesting. And being married with children.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And not the TV show, you yourself.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yes. Being married with children. Love and marriage. How did
- 1:53Speaker 2: that affect the writing?
- 1:54Speaker 3: Well, you know, we we tried to, like, not make
- 1:58Speaker 3: it about ourselves because both Pharrell and I are married
- 2:02Speaker 3: with four kids each.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And we have one thing in common with kids, by
- 2:06Speaker 1: the way. We both have a son named Miles.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Oh, cool. Love that name. Yes, it's a great name. Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 3: And and so we wanted to, like, write a character.
- 2:16Speaker 3: that wasn't either of our wives, but just that kind
- 2:19Speaker 3: of exists, existed out in the world. It was like, yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 3: it was like, we wanted it to be kind of cinematic. And, uh,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and so that's, that's really what the storytelling is like in, in,
- 2:30Speaker 3: in the album.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Well, John, I gotta tell you, you've collaborated with everybody, uh,
- 2:34Speaker 1: from Lauren Hill back in the day, Andre 3000, uh,
- 2:38Speaker 1: to Common, Jay-Z, Sam Smith, The Roots. Is there a
- 2:41Speaker 1: dream collaboration out there that, uh, you know, you'd be
- 2:45Speaker 1: completely geeking out over?
- 2:46Speaker 2: If it happened? I was just asked that in my
- 2:49Speaker 2: last interview. My answers will be the same. Well, you
- 2:53Speaker 2: know what? Different demographic.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I said I'd love to work with Kendrick Lamar. I
- 2:56Speaker 3: said I'd love to work with Olivia Dean. That'd be great.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Well, we have a surprise for you. Olivia Dean, come
- 3:02Speaker 2: on in. How cool would that be if she walked
- 3:04Speaker 2: in right now? That would be, the planning would be impeccable.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Now, you've played piano. You've sung with some of the
- 3:10Speaker 1: biggest artists in the world. You won a bunch of
- 3:12Speaker 1: awards and performed for huge audiences. But what is the
- 3:16Speaker 1: one thing in your life, with your wife especially, Chrissy Teigen,
- 3:19Speaker 1: what would she say you're absolutely terrible at?
- 3:24Speaker 2: You're so good at everything. What would Chrissy say, you
- 3:27Speaker 2: know what.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You're not good at that, John Legend?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Well, see, there's some things you... I know what my
- 3:33Speaker 2: answer is. Want to not be good at so you
- 3:34Speaker 2: don't get asked to do it all the time. Are
- 3:37Speaker 2: you good at listening? You're like, oh, I'm terrible at
- 3:39Speaker 2: doing the dishes. Oh, no, I can't do the dishes.
- 3:42Speaker 2: But do you ever get yelled at for not listening?
- 3:45Speaker 3: No, she she believes I listen. I think I have
- 3:49Speaker 3: to like. Because sometimes she's on her phone, and I'm like, hey, hello, hello.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Okay, so she's in the zone on the phone.
- 3:56Speaker 1: What is a typical night with you guys? Are you
- 3:58Speaker 1: on your phones in bed before you go to bed?
- 4:00Speaker 3: We like to watch shows together, so we like to
- 4:03Speaker 3: watch true crime, documentaries, reality shows.
- 4:07Speaker 2: We like 90 Day Fiancé. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 3: We like to watch TV that is comment worthy, so
- 4:16Speaker 3: we can sit and talk about it.
- 4:18Speaker 2: That's our boy.
- 4:20Speaker 3: We like to roast whatever we're watching. So we're like
- 4:23Speaker 3: making jokes to each other. And yeah, that's a big
- 4:26Speaker 3: part of how we like after the kids go to bed.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That was my question. When do the kids go to bed?
- 4:31Speaker 3: They're like fully in bed and leaving us alone by
- 4:34Speaker 3: eight o'clock.
- 4:35Speaker 2: OK. Yeah. And three hours. Yeah. Like so we'll get
- 4:38Speaker 2: a couple hours to watch something. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Well, we're so happy you're back with new music again.
- 4:43Speaker 2: October 23rd is the release, right?
- 4:44Speaker 1: For Muse.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah. So the new album is called Muse. It's produced
- 4:47Speaker 2: fully by Pharrell Williams. Every song. We wrote every song together,
- 4:51Speaker 2: and it's out October 23rd.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And for New Yorkers, I have my first musical that
- 4:58Speaker 3: I wrote, and you can see it at The Shed.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Or whoever's visiting New York, you can see it at
- 5:03Speaker 3: The Shed from November 21st to January 3rd. It's called
- 5:06Speaker 3: Imitation of Life.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Well, John Legend, you're the same guy that I remember
- 5:10Speaker 1: 22 years ago when I first met you. Down to earth,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and I'm wishing you nothing but success, and congratulations on everything.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Thank you.
