- 1:00Hi, my name's John and I'm an alcoholic.
- 1:05I used to really love drinking. From the first time I drunk
- 1:10drank, I completely fell in love with that.
- 1:14I loved how it made me feel. I loved the feeling of just
- 1:19losing control and not giving a shit about anything.
- 1:24I loved the feeling of getting drunk.
- 1:28The whole concept of social drinking.
- 1:31It never even crossed my mind. I always, from my first drink,
- 1:35drank to get drunk. If I wasn't getting drunk, I
- 1:38might as well have been drinking softer.
- 1:40The first time I drank was at a party.
- 1:43I went there with a six pack of beer as a 15 year old.
- 1:47I left having drink someone else's bottle of spirits.
- 1:51I got in a fight. I got beat up.
- 1:53I vomited all the way home out of my friend's car and I thought
- 1:56it was the greatest night I've ever had.
- 2:00I just fell in love with it. It became an obsession.
- 2:06The next 12 years of my life I I really can't remember very much
- 2:10of it, except the fact that I drank a lot.
- 2:13Most of the social encounters I have are in absolute blackout.
- 2:19And the only recollection I have is of people telling me
- 2:22afterwards how I got thrown out of a pub or I shut down a party
- 2:25or some other atrocious behaviour.
- 2:28But I loved the feeling of getting drunk, I loved the
- 2:31feeling of losing control and I was so convinced I was having
- 2:36such a great time. Through high school I had a part
- 2:39time job and it gave me enough money to buy 4 bottles of
- 2:42spirits and had to be my Friday and Saturday night every
- 2:47fortnight for two years. When I got university I
- 2:51discovered both cast wine and I could subsist off bar snacks and
- 2:55go from one happy hour to a happy hour.
- 2:57I don't think I went to maybe 20% of classes.
- 3:01I went to bar to bar to bar. Then when I started working I
- 3:05got a credit card and while there was no stopping me and
- 3:07then I could drink every night of the week 1 nightclub to the
- 3:11next, I used to think I was really lucky.
- 3:14I never got hungover. I never had to deal with any the
- 3:16ill effects of alcohol afterwards.
- 3:18I'd wake up the next day chipper ready to go, so no repercussions
- 3:22for my drinking. At that stage and everyone was
- 3:27young, everyone was drinking. It was so easy to fight,
- 3:29surround myself with people like me who who just wanted to drink.
- 3:34There are no short supply in university in my early 20s and
- 3:38whilst all these other people, these friends, they went off and
- 3:41they played sports and had girlfriends from starting to
- 3:43build lives. I just went from one to the
- 3:46other to the other, just continuing to drink until
- 3:48drinking was all I did and all that.
- 3:51I knew every day of the week I'd be drinking to get drunk when
- 3:56bad things happen because of my drinking.
- 3:59It was never my fault. It's always everybody else's
- 4:04fault, for I wasn't allowed in the pub.
- 4:05If they all drink properly, if they all drink like I did, when
- 4:09I'd be allowed in and everyone would be having so much of A
- 4:11better time and sitting around and nursing their drinks.
- 4:14When my front teeth got knocked down, it never even crossed my
- 4:17mind. It could have been because I
- 4:18wasn't drunk, an idiot. It was somebody else's fault,
- 4:21wasn't anything I was doing. I was just enjoying a drink.
- 4:25But looking back, how? How enough would I know?
- 4:27I I came out of blackout with my teeth missing.
- 4:31I was a constant source of worry for everyone around me with my
- 4:33drinking. But I was so scared to do
- 4:37anything else. I was scared to change because
- 4:41after drinking for a decade. And I didn't know anything else.
- 4:46I remember I was involved in a police siege because of alcohol.
- 4:53One of my good friends ended up getting shot by the police and I
- 4:57drove my car 400 kilometers away and managed to wrap it around a
- 5:00gum tree completely off my face. I got arrested, I got charged.
- 5:06I got taken home by my parents and then I bought some more wine
- 5:12and sat on the back porch and. Proceeded to get blind drunk.
- 5:18Remember Mum and dad being so upset?
- 5:20I remember Mum screaming at me. John, why can't you stop
- 5:22drinking? I remember screaming back at
- 5:25it's the only thing I'm good at. It's the only thing I'm worth
- 5:28doing. I'd given up hope I was ever
- 5:33achieving anything else in my life.
- 5:35All I wanted to do was drink and this was just a speed and you
- 5:39know, this wasn't my fault. Shortly after this I met my
- 5:45ex-wife and we fell in love with each other.
- 5:49She was wild. She was a drinker too.
- 5:51We were like Sid and Nancy. It was it was a matter of time
- 5:54before something went horribly wrong and it did did some
- 5:58horrible things in blackout. I can't remember them.
- 6:01I just got her word to go off. But after that I made a
- 6:05resolution to stop drinking, and I did for seven years.
- 6:11I didn't do it with a program. I did it by myself.
- 6:13I just did cold Turkey and at the start, what a relationship
- 6:17was good. And we were in love.
- 6:18It was. It was fantastic.
- 6:21I got a career. I started going places.
- 6:24I got my health back. We had two beautiful children
- 6:29and we got married. But then, you know, we've as a
- 6:34relationship started to not be so good.
- 6:39Without a program, I I started to feel like drinking again.
- 6:44I didn't understand my drinking because I didn't have a program.
- 6:48I didn't understand, but I still had all the character defects I
- 6:51didn't understand. I was white knuckling and
- 6:53relying on someone else for my sobriety, and it wasn't long
- 6:59before I was sneaking out and drinking every night.
- 7:04It felt like a release. It felt like something I
- 7:07deserved because I was working so hard with with my job and
- 7:11with the kids and providing and keeping everything up and
- 7:14running. I thought I deserve to be able
- 7:16to sneak out at night and and drink on the back porch.
- 7:19We were sleeping in separate rooms by then, so it was easy to
- 7:24do. She didn't notice this for about
- 7:28a year until she caught me with a bottle of vodka, but by then
- 7:33the relationship was blown completely.
- 7:38It wasn't necessarily very good, but I was pouring fuel on the
- 7:41fire because I was irritable, because all I wanted to do was
- 7:44drink again. Again.
- 7:46It was all I knew and I didn't want to spend time with her or
- 7:49my children or anything else. I wanted them all to fuck off
- 7:53and go to bed so I could sneak out and drink alcohol.
- 8:00About 3 months later I got what we wanted and we separated.
- 8:05She stayed up on the Sunshine Coast and I moved now away
- 8:07closer to work and all of a sudden I could drink as much as
- 8:10I wanted to and I drank every day again.
- 8:15I started going to pubs and clubs, but I found that I
- 8:18couldn't really get drunk enough or socialize.
- 8:22I spent most of my time drinking by myself and I was so convinced
- 8:26I was having such a good time dancing with the dog and calling
- 8:30up old friends and complaining about my wife and all the rest
- 8:34of it. Until six months later she she
- 8:37met someone else and she took the children down to Melbourne,
- 8:421500 kilometres away. And I didn't see it at the time,
- 8:47but I was so afraid. I was so scared.
- 8:50I didn't fight it and I didn't see it at the time.
- 8:53I was so much in this way of to drink and it was so much in
- 8:56control of my life and my decisions and I just let her go.
- 9:01But without having my children nearby, the drinking just went
- 9:06to another level. Couple of bottles of wine became
- 9:10a couple of bottles of wine and a bottle of spirits, and I
- 9:14stopped calling friends and being sociable because, well, no
- 9:17one wanted to hear my shit anymore.
- 9:20I was alone and I was drinking my back porch every night, but I
- 9:24was still so convinced that life was good and I was happy about
- 9:29everything that I needed and everything that I wanted.
- 9:32It wasn't long from then soon until I started drinking during
- 9:35the day as well as at night. It wasn't long until I lost my
- 9:39job. My career, seven years of hard
- 9:42work, had just been destroyed. Seven years of sobriety.
- 9:46I'd lost my family, I'd lost my job, and I was alone.
- 9:52I was so far away from my family didn't.
- 9:57I didn't know what to do. So you know I.
- 10:00I did the geographical. I signed up for a locum company
- 10:03and decided that I was going to travel around the country and
- 10:06they just drink myself to death. Because when that stage I was so
- 10:10depressed and I thought that was all I was good at and that was
- 10:13all I was good for. So I started back filling one
- 10:16hospital to the other and just drinking.
- 10:21Drinking in place where people didn't know me, where I didn't
- 10:24care if I made and asked myself in public because I'd be gone
- 10:27and I'll meet the next town. And I had all these bullshit
- 10:31ideas in my head that I was going to do touristy things and
- 10:34learn to surf and whatnot, but it was just one bottle to the
- 10:36next. That was all that I cared about.
- 10:39That was all that I cared for. Even my death by bottle plan and
- 10:43travelling the country plan, I couldn't even do that properly.
- 10:48But COVID lockdowns happened and I got stuck in Regional SA and
- 10:56all of it came crashing to a stop.
- 10:59All of a sudden I was locked in the hotel, 1500 kilometres away
- 11:04from anyone knew I knew and drink and just continued to
- 11:08worsen. About that time my my children
- 11:13got taken off my ex-wife, she'd found herself a new partner who
- 11:18was beating the absolute shit out of her and my kids.
- 11:23I'd reported it to DCP and then gone and.
- 11:26And I hadn't taken the children off her, but they refused to
- 11:30give them to me because of my drinking.
- 11:34This gave me some pause for a little while in my drinking.
- 11:38I I reached out and started dabbling into Mayo meetings, but
- 11:43I went, but I didn't listen. I wasn't convinced that there
- 11:48was anything wrong with me. I was still so arrogant and
- 11:51convinced that the problem was everyone else.
- 11:54And if everyone else had a good time, and if everyone else drank
- 11:56like I did, then no one would have a problem.
- 12:00I came and I sat there, but I didn't really listen.
- 12:03I didn't really take it in. And although, you know, I drank
- 12:08less, I stopped being an everyday drinker.
- 12:10When I didn't drink, my drinking continued to worsen.
- 12:15About this time I stopped measuring trips in the car in
- 12:18kilometers. Trips were how many long necks I
- 12:21could neck on the drive through there.
- 12:24And then how drunk I could get when I got there.
- 12:27There was always enough for a family Christmas in my cupboard
- 12:30to drink at any given moment, and if it wasn't, I wasn't
- 12:33comfortable with it. I got a permanent job where I
- 12:36was living and to get myself into a position where I could
- 12:40take those girls as an alternative for them, staying
- 12:44with their grandmother, who was who was violent, I got myself a
- 12:48girlfriend. Things started in some ways to
- 12:51look better, but my drinking, it just continued to worsen and
- 12:54worse. And it wasn't long at all.
- 12:56Twice back at a point where I was completely out of control
- 13:01and I was drinking every day, the girlfriend couldn't stick
- 13:07around. She couldn't bear to sit there
- 13:09and watch me kill myself. As much as she loved being, I
- 13:12loved her. As much as we talked about a
- 13:14future, she just saw what everyone else saw in an early
- 13:17grave coming my way. I lost her and and about the
- 13:21same time my ex-wife had got her children, our children back.
- 13:25By then she she cut me off from any sort of contact with the
- 13:29kids. She was too scared of my
- 13:32drinking. She was too scared of the person
- 13:35that I was becoming and and this, this was the last straw of
- 13:41this was rock bottom to beat all rock bottoms for me.
- 13:46And as I was sitting there I. And I was determined to treat
- 13:50myself today. If I had bought myself 4 bottles
- 13:53of spirits and I was going to drink him, And for some reason,
- 13:59for some reason for Providence, I I decided to reach out to a
- 14:02friend I'd made an A, A and asked for help.
- 14:05For some reason I decided to maybe maybe it was worth giving
- 14:09a shot. Maybe after all this time it had
- 14:13better drink doing me harm and not.
- 14:17Everybody else, she couldn't help me.
- 14:20She wasn't at a great place at the time, but I think that was,
- 14:23again, that was Providence. She was able to put me in
- 14:27contact for someone who did. And it was the first time when I
- 14:33was speaking to someone that I felt that connection and I felt
- 14:38that this person actually has a solution for me.
- 14:42I wanted what they had. I can't even remember what I
- 14:47said that one day, but it was probably absolute self pitying
- 14:51dribble. But this beautiful man who
- 14:53turned out to be my sponsor, he sat there and he listened to me
- 14:57and he took it all in and he said move.
- 14:59He asked me the three questions. Do you think you got a problem?
- 15:04Yeah. Do you think you can do it on
- 15:07your own? No.
- 15:11Are you willing to go to any length possible?
- 15:14Then yes, and I'm glad I answered him correctly for him.
- 15:18He got me to order a book, order V book, which I did straight
- 15:22away because I wanted what what he had.
- 15:26I didn't even know what it was then, but I wanted it.
- 15:30I remember I ordered the bulk and I was going to be sober that
- 15:34day. So I went in and I had a shower
- 15:35and I remember just everything coming in at me at once and just
- 15:38lying there and pull with my own mess.
- 15:41Just crying for about 3 hours. I was so scared and overwhelmed,
- 15:47but I stayed sober. About a week later a book
- 15:51arrived and and I was like a man possessed.
- 15:57Oh got told what to do, what to read, how to interact with the
- 16:00book. And I didn't.
- 16:01And every night we would discuss it and tell me what to do next
- 16:07and all these things that I was so blase.
- 16:12About before I'm so determined they weren't for me.
- 16:15I started identifying with and I started seeing myself in the
- 16:18text and my behaviors in the text.
- 16:21I was starting to feel like, hey, was she idea of not
- 16:26drinking. I remember him say, Are you
- 16:31ready? Are you ready to be start living
- 16:33on a higher plane of existence. And yes, yes I have.
- 16:37And, you know, riding down the moral inventory.
- 16:41And it became so clear to me even before that beautiful man
- 16:44drove 700 kilometers. Come down and sit down and work
- 16:48through it with me that I'd always been afraid.
- 16:53I'd always been so scared of everything in life.
- 16:55And that was the root cause of all my bad decisions.
- 17:02At every point we had built up a resentment in life.
- 17:06Was something had gone my fear. Had been lying there at the
- 17:10heart of it and my inaction and my turning to a bottle rather
- 17:15than taking any sort of ownership of my own life.
- 17:20I'll never forget how good it felt to sit there and share that
- 17:25inventory with him, pray on it at night and then the next
- 17:31morning when I woke up, just a feeling of release, the feeling
- 17:36of being reborn as a completely. New Person was absolutely
- 17:43incredible and now it's it's there with me every single day.
- 17:47That feeling, it's hard to describe, but it's just just
- 17:52amazing of not having to carry that fear of being able to be
- 17:56fearless if I just continue to make to work this really, really
- 18:01simple program. I'm not cured of my character
- 18:06defects that cause me to be an alcoholic.
- 18:10I'm not cured of the fear of the people pleasing of the low self
- 18:14worth. But with 10 minutes prayer every
- 18:18day in the morning and reflection every night with
- 18:22calling up and talking to my sponsor about resentments as
- 18:26they come up rather than bottling them up and swallowing
- 18:28them down, I can't have a close relationship with God.
- 18:37I get to be in touch with my spiritual side and life just
- 18:40gets keeps getting better and better and better.
- 18:44I'm not scared of people anymore.
- 18:46I'm not scared that the person I am isn't good enough for
- 18:50anything more than another bottle and another drink.
- 18:53I live life one day at a time and that way it's not
- 18:57overwhelming. I've no control of the people,
- 19:00places and things, but I have the superpower.
- 19:03To choose how I react to things and to live by a set of values
- 19:10as opposed to 1 drink to the next.
- 19:13And it's amazing. I get to know contentment now,
- 19:19and I get to know acceptance that maybe life isn't exactly
- 19:22how I want it, but it's exactly how it's supposed to be.
- 19:27Life is a different type of scary now.
- 19:31It's a type of scary because there's.
- 19:33So many things in life I don't know or don't do, because all I
- 19:38did was spend so many years just being a drunk.
- 19:43But I've got a simple program that lets me conquer my fears
- 19:46and the ability to get out and try new things and push myself
- 19:50in different ways. I never knew that I enjoy it so
- 19:55much. I never knew that I don't enjoy
- 19:57new learning, new skills, new sports.
- 20:02I never knew that I could have so much fun with other people
- 20:05while sober, rather than just being being drunk, oblivious and
- 20:10obnoxious and not really caring about what anyone else ever
- 20:13thought. I'm ten months sober and I love
- 20:15my life. I'm reconnecting with my
- 20:18children and rebuilding that relationship, which I I let go
- 20:23through the bottle. Through my inaction.
- 20:26I've been making amends, sort of people that I hurt along the way
- 20:32by by selfish, dishonest, self seeking behaviour.
- 20:37I love my life, I love the fellowship and I love being able
- 20:41to look forward to whatever the future brings.
- 20:45I don't dwell on it. I live in the moment and the
- 20:50moment now it's it's fantastic. Getting sober was the best thing
- 20:56that I've ever done. We have local meetings for the
- 21:01full week in the local area. Monday is Gala meeting at 8:00,
