- 0:00Hey friends, welcome back to In THE Stillness.
- 0:03This is friendly. So glad that you are joining me
- 0:06on this Tuesday, wherever you're tuning in from.
- 0:09Hope you are having a wonderful day so far.
- 0:11Today we're going to be diving into a passage that is once
- 0:15again, very practical. Like yesterday's, it's going to
- 0:18be going through chapter 4 of First Thessalonians, verses 9
- 0:23through 12. It's a lot about love and living
- 0:27quietly and how those things tie together to being set apart
- 0:31followers of Jesus. So with that, let's go ahead and
- 0:34read it. There's no need for anyone to
- 0:38say much to you about loving your fellow believers, for God
- 0:42is continually teaching you to unselfishly love one another.
- 0:46Indeed, your love is what you're known for throughout Macedonia.
- 0:50We urge you, beloved ones, to let this unselfish love increase
- 0:56and flow through you more and more.
- 0:58Aspire to lead a calm and peaceful life as you mind your
- 1:02own business and earn your living just as we've taught you.
- 1:06By doing this, you will live an honorable life, influencing
- 1:10others and commanding respect of even the unbelievers.
- 1:14Then you'll be in need of nothing and not dependent upon
- 1:18others. OK so first of all, I love how
- 1:24verse 9 it says that the Lord is teaching us how to love and just
- 1:30as we have been taught by God to love one another.
- 1:33This is chapter 4, verse nine. That part stopped me because one
- 1:38of the first verses I ever memorized was first John 49 and
- 1:42then it says this is how God showed His love among us.
- 1:46He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might
- 1:50live, live through him. So I think it's so cool that
- 1:53it's the same verse numbers. They're both about love and both
- 1:57about showing how God himself is our teacher when it comes to
- 2:02love. We are taught how to love
- 2:05through the very person of Jesus Christ.
- 2:09We see His life through the gospels, how He speaks, His
- 2:13actions, the way that He cared for people.
- 2:16He served the hurting people, those lost, those broken.
- 2:21He spoke truth gently but boldly, and ultimately He gave
- 2:26up everything as a fragrant offering.
- 2:30His body was broken, His blood was poured out.
- 2:34That is the ultimate picture of love that we get to see.
- 2:39So when God came to earth through his Son Emmanuel,
- 2:43meaning God with us, he didn't just talk about love, He lived
- 2:47it. And I believe that's the tone
- 2:49setter for how we're called to love unselfishly, sacrificially,
- 2:55and without limits. So we see in this passage, the
- 3:01Thessalonians were known for their love.
- 3:04That's what Paul is saying here, that they were already living it
- 3:07out. And so he's encouraging them do
- 3:10so more and more. And that made me think for me
- 3:14personally, but for all of us, what if people described us that
- 3:18way, The church, the body of believers to be known for our
- 3:23love. There's a song that I really
- 3:27enjoy listening to, and it's called Met by Love by United
- 3:31Pursuit. If you haven't listened to it,
- 3:34please go do it. But it paints this beautiful
- 3:37picture as you're listening of the Father's love for us.
- 3:40It says that we can run straight into his arms unafraid because
- 3:45we've been met by love. So because we've been freely met
- 3:49by His love, may we freely give it.
- 3:53Now I want to go into a question for us to reflect on.
- 3:58Are we known for our love, not just for God, but for other
- 4:03people? Because those two, they go hand
- 4:07in hand. And 1st John once again, chapter
- 4:114 verse 21, it says that whoever loves God must also love their
- 4:16brother and sister. Think about it like a
- 4:20relationship. When you truly love someone, you
- 4:23care about what makes them happy.
- 4:26You value what they value. That's how love works.
- 4:30It overflows. Now, I know you're not always
- 4:33going to have the same hobbies and interests, and there might
- 4:37be different family dynamics, so it's not always easy to love.
- 4:41But when you care about that person, that's your goal, is to
- 4:45love what they love. And there's always room for
- 4:48more, for greater love, for more of Jesus to be seen through us
- 4:54if his Spirit dwells in you. Love is meant to flow.
- 4:59It's not meant to be restricted. And I want to say if something
- 5:04is blocking that flow, maybe you have tension with someone or
- 5:09you're holding a grudge. Maybe there's pride or there's
- 5:12been past hurt. It's important to deal with it.
- 5:16Scripture tells us in Ephesians 426 to not let the sun go down
- 5:21while we're still angry. So that implies bitterness,
- 5:26holding a grudge. So we need to pursue
- 5:30reconciliation because the ministry of reconciliation,
- 5:34that's what Jesus does for us every single day, and that's
- 5:38what we're called to live out. And also, let's remember, tough
- 5:43love is better than fake love. I wrote that down in my notes
- 5:48and I was like, wow, yeah, I would rather someone be truthful
- 5:53than be phony. I would rather someone be
- 5:56authentic and love me enough to tell me something and show me
- 6:02something in my life that is actually harming me, then to
- 6:05just say it's OK and move on. Now Paul also shifts gears, he
- 6:13says, to make it our ambition to live a quiet life.
- 6:17And that word ambition, I looked it up in the dictionary.
- 6:20But it means a strong desire to achieve something.
- 6:24But it takes determination and hard work, implying that it's
- 6:29not easy to live quietly, especially in our loud,
- 6:33fast-paced world. It's going to take intentional
- 6:37pursuit. But this is our call to
- 6:40responsibility, to show that love is not just in words, but
- 6:44it's in how we live. So a challenge for us is don't
- 6:49be idle, don't be lazy, hold yourself to a higher standard
- 6:54because that's how you live. That points people to Jesus
- 6:59living differently, living consecrated and set apart.
- 7:04This can be shown through working hard, being diligent,
- 7:09being content, and staying grateful with where the Lord has
- 7:12you. Those things are what make you
- 7:15stand out. So find contentment where God
- 7:19has you right now. Another translation says mind
- 7:23your own business. Don't compare your life to
- 7:26others. Work with integrity, even in the
- 7:29small, seemingly unseen things. The Lord sees all, and He will
- 7:36reward those and be present. Be grateful for where you are
- 7:41when you live that way. When you're steady and you're
- 7:44genuine and faithful, others notice whether you know it or
- 7:49not, and you earn respect. Naturally, this does not mean
- 7:54that you're just never going to fail, but consistency in both
- 7:59good and hard seasons, it shows who you live for, whether it's
- 8:04yourself or for your creator. So a few challenge questions I'm
- 8:10going to leave y'all with. First off, what in my life is
- 8:13making things unnecessarily noisy?
- 8:172:00 AM I working with excellence where God has me in
- 8:21this moment, in this season #3 am I letting his love flow
- 8:28freely through me, or am I holding anything back?
- 8:33So let's move into prayer right now.
- 8:36Dear Father, thank you for showing us what real love looks
- 8:41like through Jesus, your precious Son.
- 8:45Thank you for teaching us through your board, through your
- 8:48Spirit, how to love like you. Would you help us to live
- 8:53quietly but also boldly, to work hard to stay content and to love
- 9:00others so deeply out of an abundance of love for you,
- 9:04Jesus? Father, if there is any tension
- 9:07or distraction in our hearts, would you bring peace?
- 9:11Would you bring clarity to that so that we can pursue
- 9:14reconciliation? If there's any unnecessary
- 9:19noise, would you bring focus? Lord, let your love flow freely
- 9:26through US today and every day. We ask this all in your name,
- 9:30Jesus, Amen. OK, well, that is the podcast
- 9:35content for today. I'm praying that you feel the
- 9:38Lord's nearness and that His love would move through every
- 9:42part of your day. And also, go listen to Met by
- 9:45Love and let it remind you of how deeply known and how deeply
- 9:49loved you are. I'll see you on the next
- 9:52podcast.
