- 1:04I've got you back, fam. All right guys, what's going on?
- 1:07I've been doing a lot of videos recently on girls on the autism
- 1:11spectrum because I feel like girls with autism are always
- 1:14like, I like the second day. You know, they ever always talks
- 1:18about boys with autism. Nobody really talks about girls
- 1:20with autism. And there are so many, like
- 1:22loads of my friends are girls who are on the autism spectrum.
- 1:24I've done loads of videos with those.
- 1:25And if you'd like to learn more about it, I've put the playlist
- 1:27in the link down below in the description of this video.
- 1:29But in terms of, like girls in the autism spectrum and and, you
- 1:34know, not getting diagnosis or getting misdiagnosed, I'm not
- 1:37even getting the appropriate help and attention that they
- 1:40need. Oh my goodness.
- 1:41It's like an epidemic that, like, girls are three times less
- 1:44likely to be diagnosed than males, which has no relevance at
- 1:47all, only other than like, some shocking fact.
- 1:50But I want to split three reasons.
- 1:52While girls have probably forgotten about on the autism
- 1:54spectrum, I've done a video similar to this.
- 1:56But I thought I'd missed out some kind of information.
- 1:58And I wanted to do it so that I've got everything that I
- 2:00wanted to possibly talk to you about in this video.
- 2:03Because let's face it, at the end of the day, I want to give
- 2:05you guys as much information as possible.
- 2:07And you're awesome and I love you.
- 2:08And I'm trying to make sure that you guys don't feel alone and
- 2:11you always have someone to turn to.
- 2:12And I have as much information as possible.
- 2:13So yeah, let's get into the video.
- 2:16Kick it. I don't know why I did that.
- 2:18I'm so sorry everybody. Right.
- 2:21So the first one here is old data.
- 2:23Now, most if not all of the data that was created on autism
- 2:27research for autism was created for the diagnostic criteria, but
- 2:31based upon research that was done on males about on the
- 2:34autism spectrum. So you got to think about this
- 2:36right. When they were setting up all
- 2:38the details for diagnosing people with autism and what
- 2:41criteria could go into a diagnostic.
- 2:43They were looking at a model of a male's perspective and a male
- 2:48specific model of someone in the autism spectrum.
- 2:51So when you try and relate that information to a girl in the
- 2:54autism spectrum, it's not going to fit.
- 2:56Let's just be be perfectly honest, you know, it's never
- 2:59going to fit because the brains are different.
- 3:01They're all different than everybody, but they're all
- 3:02different between males and females.
- 3:04That's why we have males and females.
- 3:05You know that they're different people.
- 3:06There's different things going on here.
- 3:07So you can't just take diagnostic that was made for
- 3:10males and then just smack onto a female and if oh, they didn't
- 3:12pass. So that means they haven't got
- 3:13autism? No, it means that the test
- 3:15wasn't adequate for the person you're trying to test.
- 3:19I mean, like, yeah, it's weird, right?
- 3:21You wouldn't test a giraffe on how well it can swim, right?
- 3:25I don't actually. Drafts.
- 3:26Maybe I'll swim really well. But, you know, compared to like
- 3:28a dolphin, it's not a fair test, You know, it's ridiculous.
- 3:30You test the dolphin and how good it could swim.
- 3:32It come up with 10 out of 10 did it with the giraffe.
- 3:34It probably failed miserably, but it doesn't mean that the
- 3:37dolphin is better equipped than the OK, this metaphor is getting
- 3:42rubbish, but you know what I mean.
- 3:43It's like you have them a test that's adequate for the person
- 3:46you're testing, right? Otherwise it just doesn't work.
- 3:48So, old criteria, old data, super, super annoying.
- 3:53But it's part of the problem when my girls, I've really
- 3:55forgotten about having autism right now.
- 3:57It's really oh, it frustrates me.
- 3:59OK, so #2, it's different diagnostic criteria, you know,
- 4:02when diagnosing girls with autism, there'll be a complete
- 4:05different criteria for diagnostics.
- 4:08This is like different than males, obviously, because girls
- 4:11will have slightly different characteristics and traits of
- 4:14autism than males, right? Because girls have a more
- 4:18independent attitude, they will try and do things a little bit
- 4:20differently to males than autism spectrum.
- 4:23And it's a little bit more tricky to kind of spot autism in
- 4:25females because of this factor that the the traits are a bit
- 4:29different. And again, because of the fact
- 4:30that all the data that everybody has been researching was all
- 4:33done on males. But when you're looking forward
- 4:34to the future, when you're looking at females, you have to
- 4:37always remember this is a completely clean slate.
- 4:39What these behavioral characteristics tell us and
- 4:42what's going on here because females will display different
- 4:44characteristics than males. That's just a fact of life, you
- 4:47know, That's what it is. Yes, there will still be social
- 4:49interaction issues, yes, there will be century processing
- 4:51disorder issues, but some of the big main Balkans will be
- 4:54different because there is different diagnostic criteria
- 4:56for males to females. Now the National Autistic
- 4:58Society are rolling out courses and training to help people
- 5:01really understand this mass divide difference.
- 5:04But so far it's it's slow but sure at the end of the day, but
- 5:08it really does make a difference when we can actually understand
- 5:11the difference between the males and the females with their
- 5:13diagnostic criteria. But this is definitely one of
- 5:15the reasons why they've forgotten about this is this is
- 5:16100% reason why they've forgotten about.
- 5:18OK, so #3 is masking. Now masking is where an autistic
- 5:22woman will make make a mask for their issues and their
- 5:26difficulties to try and fit in in in normal typical social
- 5:29daily life, right. Even though they'll have
- 5:31difficulties with it, they will force themselves into situations
- 5:33that they don't don't feel comfortable in because they want
- 5:36to appear just like everybody else to kind of get through the
- 5:39day. It's a survival technique that
- 5:40girls would use more so than boys.
- 5:43As in boys in the Austin Spectrum will just kind of
- 5:45completely be lost with certain situations, whereas girls in the
- 5:47Austin Spectrum will kind of develop.
- 5:49It's a very clever way of kind of like societal survive
- 5:54situations where a girl will mask their traits so they can
- 5:57fit into that situation so that they can feel safer in that
- 6:00situation than being ousted or on the outside of that
- 6:04situation, which is just completely bonkers that we even
- 6:07have to do this. But social pressure, peer
- 6:08pressure, all these things kind of come in and they crash down.
- 6:10Right. So because of this when you're
- 6:13trying to diagnose a girl on the autism spectrum who may be
- 6:15displaying, you know, a masking kind of characteristic at that
- 6:18moment in time, you're fighting a losing battle.
- 6:21And some of the and the doctors are fighting a losing battle
- 6:23because they don't know what they're looking at because they
- 6:25haven't really thought, well, this girl could be masking is
- 6:27this, you know, they have to be clever about it And that
- 6:29diagnostic criteria for females has to be thought about
- 6:32cleverly. It has to be something new, has
- 6:34to be something that we haven't really done before because you
- 6:38have to always change and evolve with the pros and the cons here.
- 6:41Now this is shocking and it is probably one of the main reasons
- 6:45why girls are often missed off diagnosis.
- 6:48I've forgotten about as being part of the autism spectrum.
- 6:50But it doesn't take away from the fact that it happens and
- 6:54girls are only awesome spectrum. So we need to be looking at it
- 6:56differently. We need to be looking for
- 6:57resources. We need to be looking at new
- 6:59updated resources and things like the National Autistic
- 7:01Society and people like that just actually trying their best
- 7:04to make sure that everybody is not forgotten about and
- 7:07everyone's kind of like put into giving a fair opportunity and a
- 7:10fair chance of actually being diagnosed.
- 7:11Because there's so many females right now who are just
- 7:14struggling day-to-day with daily life and not getting a diagnosis
- 7:16because of these three factors and a bunch of others that are
- 7:19not their fault. It's not their fault.
- 7:22And I just wish that like we could just change it instantly,
- 7:24you know, and get everybody back together.
- 7:25But in terms of, yeah, in terms of that, you know, we're still
- 7:29fighting a fighting a battle here, but doing stuff like this
- 7:32is super awesome. Now if you think that this video
- 7:34could change somebody's life and help them, please share it on
- 7:36Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And also if you are new around
