- 0:13Speaker 1: Hello, my loves it is yours truly La La kent Ram,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and we are back at it again. I'm super excited
- 0:21Speaker 1: for our guests today because anyone who has more talent
- 0:26Speaker 1: in their pinky nail than most people have in their
- 0:30Speaker 1: entire bodies. I'm just fascinated by.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well so very well said. Trying to comprehend that whole statement.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Did it make any sense. It's a Monday, and I'm
- 0:39Speaker 1: coming off of Mother's Day. Randall brought my mom and
- 0:43Speaker 1: my brother in and I'm gonna be honest, like I
- 0:46Speaker 1: have to force myself to not be lazy. And today
- 0:49Speaker 1: it's a struggle.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I know, but let's be let's let's give ourselves a
- 0:53Speaker 3: little a little grace here.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It's we're still in quarantine in Los Angeles.
- 0:57Speaker 1: That word I never win. The this is over you guys,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I never want to hear the word quarantine ever again.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yes, so, not only we quarantine, we had family in
- 1:07Speaker 3: town and it's Monday. It's like, yeah, it's like we
- 1:11Speaker 3: need to like light a stick of dynamite in our
- 1:12Speaker 3: asses to wake up.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That's exactly how I feel.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Okay, so we.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Got it, but we got to do it today because
- 1:19Speaker 3: you know, what people rely on us to light them up,
- 1:22Speaker 3: so we're going.
- 1:23Speaker 2: To do it today.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Honestly, I rely on this podcast to make me feel amazing.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It's like I could be in the worst mood ever,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and then after we record a podcast, I'm like, let's
- 1:33Speaker 1: get this shit pop in best day ever.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, I'm excited because Emil Hirsh. You know, I just
- 1:38Speaker 3: want to tell you a little story that I first
- 1:42Speaker 3: spent a meal on Loan Survivor and we share not
- 1:46Speaker 3: only a love for movies, but we share a love
- 1:48Speaker 3: for poker, which I know you right now haven't seen
- 1:51Speaker 3: a lot of poker in the last few months. But
- 1:53Speaker 3: we were to New Mexico together for a while and
- 1:56Speaker 3: we every day off we had we played poker together.
- 1:59Speaker 3: He is the nicest human in the world. And now
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'm fortunate enough to be directing him in this movie Midnight,
- 2:04Speaker 3: So I know there's a lot of movies we both
- 2:06Speaker 3: love that he's been in, and I think he's gonna
- 2:08Speaker 3: share some fun stories for us.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's funny because you say that you guys used to
- 2:13Speaker 1: play poker, and now with the state that we're in,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you guys play pickleball together. He was just at the
- 2:19Speaker 1: house is right, whacking some balls around like a like
- 2:23Speaker 1: a little gangster.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Why don't we tell people about your experience that day
- 2:27Speaker 3: in the pickleball match, your real commitment and.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Lack of There's this thing called being like a sore loser,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and that is exactly what I am. If I'm playing
- 2:39Speaker 1: a game and I'm getting my ass kicked, I will
- 2:41Speaker 1: just give up and walk away, which is exactly what happened.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Well, and I want to I want to elaborate on
- 2:46Speaker 2: that a little bit.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Okay, I'm sure you do.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You want me to pivot again? Tell no, I want
- 2:51Speaker 3: to really gonna mock me on Monday. What I want
- 2:55Speaker 3: to say is you're a really good pick a ball player.
- 2:57Speaker 3: You are, and you're a great athlete. What happened to you?
- 3:00Speaker 3: What people don't know is that when you get down
- 3:03Speaker 3: by two or three points, you basically check the fuck out.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And not only do you.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Check out, I'm your partner on team trying to win.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Still you're done. You were preaching housewives in the middle
- 3:15Speaker 3: of the game.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, well, because I love playing pickleball. But when Randall
- 3:19Speaker 1: tells me that he wants me to come out and play,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and I'm balls deep in season three of Real Housewives
- 3:25Speaker 1: of New York and I'm having an epic throwback moment
- 3:28Speaker 1: and you take me out of that moment, like I'm
- 3:31Speaker 1: just disconnected. I'm like, I love the game, but I
- 3:33Speaker 1: love Housewives more. So I'm just like pissed off.
- 3:36Speaker 2: But I will tell you something.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Emil and Lucas Haas, who we had playing with us,
- 3:40Speaker 3: both gave you a lot of props when you went inside,
- 3:42Speaker 3: which I know you'd never heard, but.
- 3:43Speaker 2: They're like, manah, that's cool.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Your chip plays pickleball and she's badass and da da dah.
- 3:48Speaker 3: So they did give you a lot of props just
- 3:51Speaker 3: for the effort. It just wasn't your greatest pickleball day.
- 3:54Speaker 1: No, neither was yesterday. My mom is on the court.
- 3:58Speaker 1: We're having the best time ever. Here is the thing.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Randal and I should never be on those teams teams
- 4:03Speaker 1: because way too competitive. And then he's like the most
- 4:07Speaker 1: annoying winner ever. I love you, Randall, but you are.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And so I'm watching him and he's.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Winning and you don't have to finding it right now,
- 4:16Speaker 4: I'm watching you on the other side of the net,
- 4:18Speaker 4: and I'm like, God, I want to smack him with
- 4:21Speaker 4: my pickleball racket right now, just over and over again.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Because you're the most annoying winner ever. You love me.
- 4:30Speaker 1: It means that you're like, I mean winning bend Over
- 4:34Speaker 1: the best winner ever.
- 4:35Speaker 2: It's just like over.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I don't know what.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Wait, so you're telling me when I went, I told
- 4:40Speaker 3: you to bend Over. Okay, this is bullshit. First myself,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I think you're putting on a show here.
- 4:46Speaker 2: What is going on?
- 4:47Speaker 1: I don't know what you're saying.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I'm an you're the worst winner.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I'm a competitive person.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Well so am I. That's what we should be on
- 4:54Speaker 1: the same team.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Well we already agree that going forward, no matter what,
- 4:57Speaker 3: under any circumstances, we are going to be on same
- 5:00Speaker 3: team for life.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to be a better folder. But it
- 5:05Speaker 1: hasn't happened yet. I mean, I'm almost thirty and I've
- 5:08Speaker 1: been doing this since I was a kid. Like, fuck
- 5:10Speaker 1: this game, I'm out. If I'm not winning, if.
- 5:12Speaker 2: You're down by two points, you quit. I mean, let's
- 5:14Speaker 2: just be.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Honest, because I'm better than that. I'm a winner, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and when I'm losing, I'm like, you're better than this. Okay,
- 5:21Speaker 1: to just get the fuck out. And have like some pride.
- 5:25Speaker 3: So the crazy thing is you are a really good
- 5:28Speaker 3: pickleball player. It's just the mental part of the game.
- 5:31Speaker 3: We got to work on a little bit, just.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 5:33Speaker 1: There's a lot of things mentally I should be working
- 5:35Speaker 1: on a regular basis, not just when it comes to pickleball.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Trust me.
- 5:41Speaker 2: That makes two of us.
- 5:42Speaker 3: All right, Can I say, can I say something? You
- 5:44Speaker 3: remember my favorite nickname for.
- 5:46Speaker 2: You, Hoopies hoopye.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I wish people could see you right now because you
- 5:49Speaker 3: have the hoops the size of your head again back
- 5:51Speaker 3: in and it just makes me so happy.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And with the ear with the headphones.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Face, it's like some robotic mask you have on. It's
- 5:59Speaker 3: pretty fucking funny. You should you got a screenshot and
- 6:03Speaker 3: put that on your gram so people at when it
- 6:05Speaker 3: comes out.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Can see what I'm talking about.
- 6:11Speaker 3: All Right, we got to go to break here and
- 6:13Speaker 3: then after we're gonna bring a meal Hershion.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Okay, I like it. All right, We are back, beautiful people,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and we have an epic guest on the line, the greatest,
- 6:27Speaker 1: the greatest.
- 6:28Speaker 2: We have a meal hersh on the line.
- 6:29Speaker 3: The meal Hello, yeah, yeah, yeah, I love the energy.
- 6:36Speaker 2: It's Monday and the meal is firing like.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Me Monday, I am no Garfield. I like Mondays.
- 6:46Speaker 1: That's good. So first of all, I want to say,
- 6:50Speaker 1: your pickleball skills are on point. We've I've been talking
- 6:53Speaker 1: about it since you left the house. I'm gonna kick
- 6:57Speaker 1: your ass next time you come to the house with
- 6:58Speaker 1: that little.
- 6:59Speaker 5: Zinger, dude. That was honestly, that was some funny, funny,
- 7:06Speaker 5: amazing times because like me and Randall are both so
- 7:11Speaker 5: competitive and when we got on the court, but it's
- 7:15Speaker 5: funny because I'm such like a like a mental player,
- 7:19Speaker 5: and I actually like Randall's frustration when we were playing
- 7:24Speaker 5: actually like made me that much better. Like I'm not
- 7:28Speaker 5: even normally that good, but because Randall was so competitive,
- 7:32Speaker 5: like it like really brought it out of me. And
- 7:35Speaker 5: that was honestly so much fun I hope that.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You talked that same way when you think of him
- 7:41Speaker 1: as a director.
- 7:43Speaker 5: No, no, no, by the way, by the way, I
- 7:46Speaker 5: actually I told him. I texted him afterwards. I was like,
- 7:49Speaker 5: you know how I know you're a great director, Randall.
- 7:51Speaker 5: You bring the best out of me.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I love that.
- 7:56Speaker 5: I'm not I'm really not joking. There's some people that
- 8:00Speaker 5: they just they bring the best out of other people
- 8:03Speaker 5: around them. And Randalls, really, you you are one of
- 8:05Speaker 5: those guys.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Oh, thank you, buddy, And I'll tell you he did
- 8:08Speaker 3: text me after and that meant a lot. And I
- 8:10Speaker 3: want to tell you I'm competitive as fucking you whip
- 8:12Speaker 3: my ass, which I'm very upset about. And I've been
- 8:15Speaker 3: working every day with a coach. That's how obsessed I am.
- 8:18Speaker 3: So come on back and I'll give you your ass
- 8:20Speaker 3: whipping you deserve.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Well. See, now I'm scared. Now, I'm scared to go back.
- 8:25Speaker 3: By the way, Bil, sometimes it's better to just take
- 8:27Speaker 3: the win and revel in it forever.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Yeah, just never go back. Like, no, no, I'm good.
- 8:34Speaker 5: I don't play anymore. I'm more into ping pong now,
- 8:36Speaker 5: you know. I went skateboarding the other day with my
- 8:40Speaker 5: homie Kenny from high school, and he hit me up.
- 8:43Speaker 5: He's like, should we do some like social distance skateboarding
- 8:46Speaker 5: full and I'm like, it's like, literally how we talked
- 8:51Speaker 5: in high school, just like these dumb ass LA guys.
- 8:53Speaker 5: So I roll up to his place with my skateboard
- 8:56Speaker 5: and mind you, I did Lords of Dogtown when I
- 8:59Speaker 5: was nineteen, but I was a skateboarder in middle school.
- 9:01Speaker 5: But it's been frigging years since I've skated. But I
- 9:05Speaker 5: used to do these kickflips and I could kickflip over things.
- 9:08Speaker 5: So I started skating. And immediately we go we go
- 9:11Speaker 5: to like some curb, and everyone by the way is
- 9:14Speaker 5: looking at us, like, what are these guys in their
- 9:16Speaker 5: mid thirties doing, like with their shirts off, skating on
- 9:18Speaker 5: the curve And this is this is actually really embarrassing.
- 9:22Speaker 5: But like Kenny's house is right across the like right
- 9:26Speaker 5: by my son's pediatricians office.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Oh my god, wow, So.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Like I'm literally a shirtless dude skating in front of
- 9:34Speaker 5: his like son's doctor's office. Like I was like, this
- 9:37Speaker 5: is kind of this is kind of like weird.
- 9:40Speaker 2: We do it.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Kenny immediately tries to like one d up a curve,
- 9:44Speaker 5: the board flies out from underneath him and he just
- 9:46Speaker 5: gets bodied to the chest. Oh for a minute, and
- 9:50Speaker 5: I'm like, oh no, Kenny, it's been a while now, Like, Kenny,
- 9:54Speaker 5: this was your idea. You can't like break your spine
- 9:56Speaker 5: on your first trick. But we eventually got a a
- 10:00Speaker 5: few takes of me kick flipping over aboard. I hadn't
- 10:02Speaker 5: done that trick in eighteen years. Oh my god, I
- 10:06Speaker 5: landed it. I stuck it. I put it on my Instagram.
- 10:08Speaker 5: I was like so proud of it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Oh you did you stuck it?
- 10:10Speaker 5: I did so. I tried to do a kick flip
- 10:13Speaker 5: four days later, and I had like bruised my hamstring
- 10:18Speaker 5: a week before. So when I landed my first pick
- 10:21Speaker 5: flip I tried, it was like a shooting pain and
- 10:25Speaker 5: I just like went to the ground and I was like, oh,
- 10:27Speaker 5: I'm not twelve anymore.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Oh that's when you know you're you're a grown ass man.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Now you can't be doing that stuff.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I disagree, disagree. I just want to tell you that
- 10:37Speaker 2: when I bought my.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Kids a skateboard, it's just because they wanted one and
- 10:40Speaker 3: I thought, I'm going to bring it back to Miami
- 10:41Speaker 3: old school.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Did that go for you?
- 10:43Speaker 2: Not good? But but I just hold on.
- 10:45Speaker 3: First of all, I could kick the board out still,
- 10:47Speaker 3: but I cannot flip that shit anymore.
- 10:50Speaker 2: That's gone. Those days are over over. But I Meil,
- 10:53Speaker 2: I give you mad.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Props for going out there and still crushing. I do
- 10:57Speaker 3: mad promm.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it had it had Legit been eighteen
- 11:01Speaker 5: years since I kick flip like a boss over a
- 11:03Speaker 5: staatee word on its side.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And by the way, I just want to tell you
- 11:06Speaker 3: Lord's a Dogtown for those who have not seen it,
- 11:09Speaker 3: is one of the greatest ever, I mean, just epic film.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And I just want to ask I just want to ask.
- 11:15Speaker 3: You a few questions, like, because people have watched you,
- 11:18Speaker 3: you you've won awards, you've been nominated for everything, and
- 11:20Speaker 3: you're considered and I'm gonna blow your ego up. You
- 11:23Speaker 3: are considered one of those actors that are the real deal.
- 11:26Speaker 3: And when I say that from an industry point of view,
- 11:29Speaker 3: I think audiences know, but they don't know how to
- 11:31Speaker 3: verbalize it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It's like there's the Joaquin.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Phoenixes, that Daniel day Lewis's and the Emial Hersch's of
- 11:36Speaker 3: the world, people that you know, when you bring them
- 11:38Speaker 3: onto a film, you're gonna get the highest level of quality.
- 11:42Speaker 3: And I've always said that to you since we did
- 11:44Speaker 3: Loan Survivor together, and you know that. I mean, I
- 11:47Speaker 3: know you don't say it, but they're just certain actors
- 11:50Speaker 3: that are true artists that.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Really cannot stop watching it.
- 11:53Speaker 3: You can't stop watching it, and you're one of them.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Just tell people how you started, like in the industry,
- 11:59Speaker 3: just you know, how did you get out, Like you
- 12:01Speaker 3: know you grew up in La How did it all happen?
- 12:03Speaker 5: Yeah, Well, first off, I want to give a shout
- 12:07Speaker 5: out to my recently, very recently deceee late grandfather's brother.
- 12:13Speaker 5: My I guess he's my granduncle Cliff, who died a
- 12:15Speaker 5: few weeks ago at the extraordinary age of ninety nine.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Oh and uh great guide and he him and his
- 12:23Speaker 5: wife's Gladys, were famous Hollywood studio teachers, like for like
- 12:29Speaker 5: forty years, so they and they lived out in Malibu.
- 12:32Speaker 5: So when me and my sister were kids, my dad
- 12:34Speaker 5: used to take us out there, and Cliff and Gladys
- 12:36Speaker 5: used to be like, oh, yeah, we were teaching Elijah
- 12:39Speaker 5: Wood on set and kids on this and this and this,
- 12:42Speaker 5: and you kids could do it if you want. And
- 12:44Speaker 5: Gladys was super encouraging. And I was like six or seven,
- 12:47Speaker 5: and my sister was really into it. So I was like, well,
- 12:49Speaker 5: this sounds kind of weird, but it sounds kind of
- 12:51Speaker 5: cool being in a movie and like getting paid and like, oh,
- 12:54Speaker 5: lots pretty cool, you know. I was like, man, I
- 12:56Speaker 5: could probably buy a lot of toys with that loop.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my god, yeah, no, fully, Fully what age
- 13:03Speaker 2: was this again?
- 13:03Speaker 5: It was probably like six or six or seven we
- 13:06Speaker 5: started hearing the stories from Cliff and Gladys, so by
- 13:09Speaker 5: like eight or nine, Like my dad he you know,
- 13:13Speaker 5: he talked to some agent in Hollywood. I think it
- 13:15Speaker 5: was like Julia Roberts's agent at the time. He somehow
- 13:17Speaker 5: got a hold of her and asked her some questions
- 13:19Speaker 5: and she recommended him to like Samuel French bookstore, which
- 13:22Speaker 5: is basically like the like oh yeah, out of my face,
- 13:24Speaker 5: random person. It's like, oh yeah, I just go to
- 13:26Speaker 5: Samuel French Bookstore and look up how to Anything.
- 13:29Speaker 3: By the way Sunset Boulevard, Samuel French, I remember. I remember.
- 13:33Speaker 3: It's like the big acting playwrights, you know.
- 13:36Speaker 5: Yeah, So my dad got this book how to like
- 13:40Speaker 5: how to Raise a Rising Star Guide to show biz
- 13:43Speaker 5: kids and their parents by this guy David Mattis, who
- 13:46Speaker 5: was He's like a manager surfer out in Venice who
- 13:49Speaker 5: like basically just like had kids going like commercial auditions
- 13:52Speaker 5: and book little jobs and he would like surf half
- 13:54Speaker 5: today and he was a cool guy. So we met
- 13:56Speaker 5: We went and met him and at first, he didn't
- 13:59Speaker 5: want it to do with me, like this guy's boofy,
- 14:01Speaker 5: he can't remember any line. My sister was like way
- 14:04Speaker 5: cooler and like went more into it. And then over
- 14:07Speaker 5: the years it was like a thing where I did
- 14:09Speaker 5: a couple of summer camps, you know, into panga doing
- 14:12Speaker 5: like Shakespeare, and I associated acting because I went to
- 14:17Speaker 5: this will gear. Theatrical botanic of summer camp was like
- 14:20Speaker 5: being outside in nature in the summer and like playing,
- 14:23Speaker 5: so it was like the best intro to acting, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 5: was like, yeah, it was like outside fun with other kids, like,
- 14:30Speaker 5: oh this is this is fun. This is like a
- 14:32Speaker 5: hike with costumes. And then it just I just inched
- 14:36Speaker 5: my way forward, like year after year.
- 14:39Speaker 2: It was.
- 14:39Speaker 5: It was not like, oh, we got discovered and put
- 14:41Speaker 5: in this lead role in the movie. It was like
- 14:43Speaker 5: I really did like grind it out from like ten
- 14:47Speaker 5: to like fifteen of just doing tiny like bigger and
- 14:51Speaker 5: bigger parts like commercials and then little parts on guest stars,
- 14:54Speaker 5: and then slightly bigger parts and then a TV movie
- 14:57Speaker 5: and then you know what I mean. And then finally,
- 14:59Speaker 5: like when I was like fifteen, I got a role
- 15:02Speaker 5: in a movie. It was the first movie that I'd
- 15:03Speaker 5: ever done, and then that actually was the lead role
- 15:06Speaker 5: in the movie. Is this movie called The Dangerous Lives
- 15:08Speaker 5: of Ultra Boys with Karen Colkan and genlem Alone and
- 15:11Speaker 5: they're both great and wait.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Was it Jody Foster in that movie too, and.
- 15:14Speaker 5: Jody Yeah, Jody and Jody produced it too.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Just a few little actors you work with, Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, and we had and that was just it
- 15:21Speaker 5: was It was cool. So you know, I had a
- 15:24Speaker 5: you know, from then, I just kind of kept doing it,
- 15:26Speaker 5: and it was a thing where I think halfway like
- 15:29Speaker 5: in like my late teens, mid teens, like I started
- 15:32Speaker 5: really like getting into other older actors, you know, like
- 15:36Speaker 5: Sean Penn and Marlon Brando and you know Meryl Street
- 15:40Speaker 5: Caitlin's like he's just great, yeah, just great actors and
- 15:43Speaker 5: like studying them for the first time and really appreciating them.
- 15:46Speaker 5: I remember my sister's boyfriend when I was like fourteen
- 15:51Speaker 5: or fifteen. He was like this shaved head Buddhist monk dude,
- 15:56Speaker 5: who's cool, but he was like obsessed with Brando When
- 15:58Speaker 5: he sat me down and played street car named Desire
- 16:01Speaker 5: and was like watch his every move. Here's the genius
- 16:05Speaker 5: and I was like what And then I started watching
- 16:06Speaker 5: and I was like, wow, you kind of got a point, Alex.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Dude, that's amazing. I remember the first time I saw
- 16:12Speaker 1: you step into the scene, which I must have been
- 16:16Speaker 1: maybe high school, and you did The Girl next Door. Yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: And it's crazy to me because that movie was very
- 16:26Speaker 1: lighthearted and fun. And then you're doing movies with you know,
- 16:32Speaker 1: Mark Wahlberg, and then you did you know I once
- 16:36Speaker 1: upon a time in Hollywood, Like your range is incredible
- 16:40Speaker 1: and effortless.
- 16:41Speaker 3: It's insane, and I want to I want to say
- 16:42Speaker 3: something to that effect. I mean, I got to work
- 16:45Speaker 3: with one loan survivor and an epic film that I
- 16:48Speaker 3: think we both feel is probably a special moment in
- 16:51Speaker 3: both of our lives. But I got to tell you
- 16:54Speaker 3: Into the Wild is, and I'm still a fan girl over.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Into the Wild.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Just tell I know you've done this one hundred times,
- 17:02Speaker 3: but just give us, like how brutal was the production period?
- 17:06Speaker 3: How long was it and what were the what was
- 17:08Speaker 3: the environment like? Because you know me, you could call
- 17:10Speaker 3: me at the four Seasons of the Rets. That's that's
- 17:12Speaker 3: about as brutal as.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I can feel.
- 17:14Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, but tell me how, like, was it really as
- 17:18Speaker 3: ruthless as the film feels when you're watching it?
- 17:21Speaker 5: The environment, I mean, I would say, And obviously I
- 17:25Speaker 5: haven't been on every movie shoot and actor's ever done,
- 17:28Speaker 5: but in terms of like the physical and mental pressure,
- 17:35Speaker 5: I honestly don't know if there's ever quite been a
- 17:40Speaker 5: role for an actor that would have that, because I
- 17:44Speaker 5: remember at the time being like, I like, I don't
- 17:47Speaker 5: even know if I can, Like this is so hard,
- 17:50Speaker 5: this is like I was like, I don't know, Like
- 17:53Speaker 5: I think I did it because I was twenty one, right,
- 17:57Speaker 5: and I was really really like so motivated. I knew
- 18:01Speaker 5: I had the role of a lifetime. I worshiped Sean Pan.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I still worship Sean.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Oh, He's the greatest.
- 18:10Speaker 5: He's just a god to me, to the point where
- 18:12Speaker 5: it's actually like affected our friendship because I'm just such
- 18:16Speaker 5: a sick a fan around them, and you know, he
- 18:20Speaker 5: like he hates that, you know what I mean, but
- 18:22Speaker 5: just like I can't help, but I just like I'm
- 18:24Speaker 5: normal around most people, and then I get around Sean
- 18:27Speaker 5: and I just turn into this fan girl, and I
- 18:30Speaker 5: know he's just disgusted, and I can't. I can't, I can't.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I'm dying.
- 18:35Speaker 3: This is the fun. I mean, what's crazy if people
- 18:38Speaker 3: don't know? And I know you're a very private person
- 18:41Speaker 3: and so we appreciate you being on here, but like
- 18:44Speaker 3: you're around the biggest movie stars in the world, and
- 18:46Speaker 3: a lot of them are your friends because you guys
- 18:48Speaker 3: just grew up together. So for you to like even
- 18:50Speaker 3: have this conversation that you're in awe of Seana is like,
- 18:54Speaker 3: it's just it's crazy to me because I know the
- 18:57Speaker 3: kinds of actors that you're friends with and and and create.
- 19:00Speaker 3: So that's that's amazing that you still have that kind
- 19:03Speaker 3: of you know thing.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, Sean he just he has this fiery
- 19:09Speaker 5: heart of integrity and courage and his drive and it
- 19:12Speaker 5: just it extends to so many different aspects of his
- 19:15Speaker 5: life and everything, all the activity activism he does in
- 19:18Speaker 5: the humanitarian work. He's just he's so the man. And
- 19:23Speaker 5: making that film, like because I felt the way I
- 19:26Speaker 5: did about Sean, it was like I did whatever that
- 19:29Speaker 5: was asked, and you know, I wasn't like known or anything,
- 19:33Speaker 5: Like I could not imagine any movie star doing that
- 19:40Speaker 5: at all. There's just no like there's there's no way.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Was there ever a moment on that movie where you
- 19:45Speaker 3: ever asked yourself like, holy shit, this is really scary,
- 19:50Speaker 3: Like this is a moment I've been here, Like they're
- 19:53Speaker 3: really pushing the boundaries, the environment is really fucking with you,
- 19:56Speaker 3: or you know, did you always just feel like, Okay,
- 19:58Speaker 3: it's just a tough shoot, Like just curious at twenty one?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Did you ever have that moment?
- 20:02Speaker 5: I mean, there were there were so many times that
- 20:07Speaker 5: I felt like that that it was almost like when
- 20:10Speaker 5: I didn't feel like that, I noticed it. I was like, oh, wow,
- 20:13Speaker 5: I don't feel like you know, because so much because
- 20:16Speaker 5: we didn't there was no stuntman, so the all the
- 20:20Speaker 5: hiking and the kind of the wildness it was. It
- 20:24Speaker 5: was just the most physical part I've ever done. And
- 20:26Speaker 5: then when you mix that on top with the kind
- 20:30Speaker 5: of the isolation of the role and how the pressure
- 20:33Speaker 5: as a performer of being so solo in that capacity
- 20:38Speaker 5: for such a long period of time also is like
- 20:41Speaker 5: a little bit of play. And then when we did
- 20:43Speaker 5: the weight loss, Oh.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yeah, how many how many pounds did you lose for that?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yeah? I'm sure a lot of our listeners want to
- 20:48Speaker 1: know how you lost what forty pounds for this role?
- 20:51Speaker 5: Oh? It was like, yeah, it was like forty two.
- 20:53Speaker 5: So I basically I started running like a beast early on,
- 20:58Speaker 5: like a beast because I was actually a little bit
- 21:01Speaker 5: out of shape when I got the part, and Sean
- 21:03Speaker 5: was like, you should get real fit, even to just
- 21:05Speaker 5: be the normal Chrisma canas because mcalleas was fit. So
- 21:09Speaker 5: I lost a bunch of weight even before we started shooting,
- 21:12Speaker 5: and then once we were shooting, I just became a runner,
- 21:15Speaker 5: salad eater. And then when we did the maximum weight
- 21:19Speaker 5: loss part, it was like we shut down for like
- 21:21Speaker 5: two and a half weeks and I was doing like
- 21:24Speaker 5: this tiny, tiny, tiny diet of eating little protein shakes,
- 21:28Speaker 5: but I was doing two spin classes a day, one
- 21:31Speaker 5: in the morning and one in the late afternoon, and
- 21:34Speaker 5: it was like maximum That was definitely the I think
- 21:40Speaker 5: the hardest thing I've ever done, because it was like
- 21:42Speaker 5: two months or so where I was like all I
- 21:46Speaker 5: could think about was food.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Of course, when you're being deprived of it. Yeah, on
- 21:50Speaker 1: top of you know, anyone who does spin classes, even
- 21:54Speaker 1: just one, I can't imagine doing two today. That is
- 21:57Speaker 1: so taxing on your body.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Yeah, it's hard, and like eating nothing between the classes
- 22:02Speaker 5: was like it was just really extreme.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Dude, you're a legend. You're gonna hear legendary.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a hard time losing three pounds, let
- 22:10Speaker 2: alone forty two.
- 22:11Speaker 5: But that's what the the funny part is that I do.
- 22:13Speaker 5: I do too. It's not like I could do that regularly.
- 22:16Speaker 5: You know, It's like it it takes. It takes like
- 22:20Speaker 5: that kind of you know, situation to sort of bring
- 22:24Speaker 5: that out of you where you know, it's like you know,
- 22:25Speaker 5: the you know, the pressures on and you wanted I
- 22:28Speaker 5: wanted to do it right, and that role and that
- 22:31Speaker 5: story meant so much to me, and I knew I
- 22:34Speaker 5: think I really didn't know at the time that the
- 22:37Speaker 5: movie was going to be like remembered for a long time,
- 22:40Speaker 5: because like even now, it's crazy, Like I get messages
- 22:43Speaker 5: from people in every country around the world on Instagram
- 22:47Speaker 5: and stuff that have seen the movie and they're like
- 22:49Speaker 5: obsessed with it, and like every country like it's crazy.
- 22:53Speaker 5: It's like smash hit in India, It's smash hit in Asia.
- 22:57Speaker 5: You know, it's smash it in South America. And the people,
- 23:01Speaker 5: the people that really get into it are like it's
- 23:04Speaker 5: not a normal movie experience for them, you know it
- 23:07Speaker 5: like really is it? Like a lot of people feel
- 23:09Speaker 5: like it's changed their lives in.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Wow huge way.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I want to say to that it really resonated even
- 23:15Speaker 3: to this day with me, and I agree with Neil.
- 23:19Speaker 3: It's just when a movie has that kind of effect
- 23:21Speaker 3: on such a mass amount of people, you really did
- 23:25Speaker 3: something special. And I know that's what we all dream
- 23:27Speaker 3: and that's why we make movies. And that movie checked
- 23:31Speaker 3: every box. In my opinion, it's just every box on
- 23:34Speaker 3: every level.
- 23:35Speaker 2: It just was. It's just there's nothing that you know.
- 23:38Speaker 3: You could criticize so many movies for so many different
- 23:40Speaker 3: reasons we all do. There are a few movies that
- 23:43Speaker 3: you cannot and that's one of them.
- 23:45Speaker 2: So I'll give you mad thanks.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Ugh. Yeah, it's a we're.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Gonna We're gonna go to a quick break and when
- 23:51Speaker 3: we come back, I want to talk about Once upon
- 23:52Speaker 3: a Time of Hollywood, another epic role in movie. And
- 23:55Speaker 3: obviously I know you have this awesome blossoming music career
- 23:59Speaker 3: and I want to hit on that to move back.
- 24:01Speaker 1: In a minute, we are back with a meal, hirsh
- 24:07Speaker 1: and I'm just like my Jaws on the floor because
- 24:11Speaker 1: everything that you've done with your career, and you so
- 24:14Speaker 1: deserve it, because I feel like anybody who cares about
- 24:18Speaker 1: their craft as much as you do and just bringing
- 24:22Speaker 1: a story to life and making people that are watching
- 24:24Speaker 1: want to feel something is truly incredible. You don't find
- 24:28Speaker 1: that very often in actors. You know, it's just something
- 24:32Speaker 1: where they show up, they do their job. But the
- 24:35Speaker 1: way he was, the way a Mill was talking about
- 24:37Speaker 1: into the Wild, I was like, every like magical.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, Yeah, I agree.
- 24:44Speaker 3: So on that note, Lala and I obviously were lucky
- 24:48Speaker 3: enough to have gotten to go through the awards circuit
- 24:51Speaker 3: and we saw you everywhere during during and you know,
- 24:55Speaker 3: it's funny because we could plane and now we're in
- 24:57Speaker 3: this pandemic lockdown and it's like, I I could.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Have that moment again.
- 25:02Speaker 3: But you know, congratulations and you were side by side,
- 25:06Speaker 3: and you guys want a plethora of awards and once
- 25:09Speaker 3: upon a time in Hollywood, tell us just that experience
- 25:13Speaker 3: working with the great Quentin Tarantino and the cast, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 3: I mean, I know, Leo's one of your Leo DiCaprio
- 25:20Speaker 3: is one of your close friends, and all these guys
- 25:23Speaker 3: you work with, I know, you know.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Just what's the takeaway? How epic was it?
- 25:26Speaker 5: Well? It originated where I got a message on Facebook
- 25:31Speaker 5: a friend request from a little from a doll. It
- 25:35Speaker 5: was like a doll emoji or something that said Quentin Tarantino,
- 25:38Speaker 5: and I was like what I was like, is this
- 25:41Speaker 5: like some weird catfish or something? So I click, I
- 25:44Speaker 5: like clicked onto like mutual friends, and I was like, wow,
- 25:48Speaker 5: well he turns with that person. That person's like not
- 25:51Speaker 5: like that. That person's kind of legit. So I like
- 25:56Speaker 5: accepted the friend request and then I got this message
- 25:59Speaker 5: like hey me, what's up? And I was like, uh,
- 26:01Speaker 5: is this you? And he's like yeah, I'm like working
- 26:04Speaker 5: on a project. Might have like a part that you
- 26:06Speaker 5: might be right for. And I was like, oh my god.
- 26:08Speaker 5: If this is some like Sri Lankan teenager in a
- 26:12Speaker 5: basement right now, I'm going to be so annoyed. And
- 26:14Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, no, this is me? Is this
- 26:18Speaker 5: you like this? This would really be cool if this
- 26:20Speaker 5: is you. And he's like it's me and I was
- 26:22Speaker 5: like okay, and he's like I'll keep you updated. So
- 26:24Speaker 5: like months went by and I wouldn't hear from this
- 26:27Speaker 5: Facebook account and every now, and I'd be like, oh,
- 26:29Speaker 5: you know, I'm still kind of progressing and this and this,
- 26:32Speaker 5: but I still didn't know if it was real. Oh
- 26:35Speaker 5: and I was so I was so excited. And originally,
- 26:37Speaker 5: like I asked my agent, I was like this, this
- 26:39Speaker 5: guy claiming to be Quentin Tarantino sent me a message
- 26:42Speaker 5: that he might be in his movie. And my agent
- 26:44Speaker 5: was kind of like, sounds a little you know, yeah,
- 26:49Speaker 5: like you know, like you might be a little hopeful kid.
- 26:53Speaker 5: But it turned out to really be a real thing.
- 26:56Speaker 5: And it was like almost a year later that the
- 26:59Speaker 5: movie even into production. Like he really hit me up early,
- 27:02Speaker 5: and he had seen this movie, I did The Autopsy
- 27:04Speaker 5: of Jane Doe. He'd watched it with Eli Ross and
- 27:07Speaker 5: they just loved this movie. And he just he saw
- 27:09Speaker 5: me as this character j C. Bring, who was this
- 27:11Speaker 5: amazing hairstylence of the Error era, and he just was like,
- 27:15Speaker 5: he's the guy, and Quinn is He's really He's just
- 27:20Speaker 5: a great He's a great guy. He's got a huge heart.
- 27:23Speaker 5: He's just got this turbine engine of a mind that
- 27:26Speaker 5: just never stops. And I really, you know, he was
- 27:30Speaker 5: he was such a cool gentleman throughout the process, and
- 27:34Speaker 5: I have obviously I was so in awe of him
- 27:37Speaker 5: for such a long time and the chance to get
- 27:40Speaker 5: to work alongside him and Margo and Leo, and it
- 27:44Speaker 5: was just it really felt like for me at the time,
- 27:48Speaker 5: it was like if you get to do a Queen Tuarantine,
- 27:49Speaker 5: that like that's the excite the most exciting director and
- 27:53Speaker 5: actor could want to work with, you know. It's just
- 27:54Speaker 5: that that excitement that zing, and it was it was amazing.
- 27:59Speaker 5: It was it was really amazing. And it's funny because
- 28:02Speaker 5: my biggest flaw for the people that I really admire
- 28:06Speaker 5: is like, it's just I get starstruck by people. It's
- 28:09Speaker 5: hard for me to like relax, you know, interesting to
- 28:13Speaker 5: hear that well when Tarantino says action, it's like, it's
- 28:17Speaker 5: just it's so hard for me to like be chill.
- 28:19Speaker 5: I'm just like, oh my god.
- 28:20Speaker 3: It's like it's like a moment that you know is
- 28:23Speaker 3: going to be in history, because it's just everything Quentin Tarantino,
- 28:27Speaker 3: like Martin Scorsese, they make films that stand for generations.
- 28:31Speaker 3: So you probably know subconsciously deep inside, like you are
- 28:35Speaker 3: putting your mark in history.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I feel like the feeling of you know, Quentin Tarantino
- 28:41Speaker 1: yelling action on you would feel like you just got
- 28:44Speaker 1: pushed out of an airplane like that, Like the amount
- 28:46Speaker 1: of anxiety I would feel because he's the greatest and
- 28:48Speaker 1: like like you're saying a meal, it's like you've been
- 28:51Speaker 1: a fan of his work for such a long time
- 28:54Speaker 1: and he's so incredible that you do. I would totally
- 28:57Speaker 1: be starstruck too, And I don't really care about anybody.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I know that both of you can relate.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Like when I call action on my set a meal,
- 29:03Speaker 3: it's kind of the same thing.
- 29:07Speaker 1: You just have a like total like rush of adrenaline.
- 29:11Speaker 5: But in a way too, Like Randal, like when we
- 29:13Speaker 5: work together, I feel like because we were friends before,
- 29:17Speaker 5: it's so it's just there's a familiarity there. And I
- 29:20Speaker 5: really understand why actors work with directors over and over again,
- 29:24Speaker 5: because you know, the familiarity is great. You know, the
- 29:28Speaker 5: movie that I shot right before we started shooting our
- 29:31Speaker 5: film was this movie Some that I did with this
- 29:34Speaker 5: Irish director, Ivan Kavanaugh, and it was the second film.
- 29:36Speaker 5: It was the first time I worked with a director twice,
- 29:39Speaker 5: and it was like really kind of different experience of
- 29:43Speaker 5: making a movie. And I realized then for actors, just
- 29:47Speaker 5: how much of a psychological effect the director has on
- 29:52Speaker 5: all the actors. It is massive. It changes the experience.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I want to add to that.
- 29:57Speaker 3: You know, I'm going to tell you something, Meil, and
- 29:59Speaker 3: I didn't tell you that before because we were just
- 30:01Speaker 3: so caught up in the movie, in the moment and creating.
- 30:03Speaker 3: But I told my partner George, I said, you know,
- 30:07Speaker 3: I thank god you came to the table first, because
- 30:10Speaker 3: you're right, even though it was my first movie directing
- 30:13Speaker 3: and we had done many movies before this as a
- 30:16Speaker 3: producer actor relationship, you made me feel very comfortable and
- 30:21Speaker 3: I almost you know, I used you as a sounding board,
- 30:23Speaker 3: you know. I came to you many times and the
- 30:25Speaker 3: prepar you know, the pre process, and i'd get your
- 30:28Speaker 3: opinion and your advice because you are my friend and
- 30:31Speaker 3: I do trust you and I respect your work. So
- 30:33Speaker 3: when we got on set, I was probably the most
- 30:36Speaker 3: comfortable with you because I know you and I knew
- 30:39Speaker 3: that I could do things with you. And you know
- 30:42Speaker 3: what I mean, because I just have that relationship and
- 30:44Speaker 3: I agree with you. It makes sense to me now
- 30:46Speaker 3: why directors and actors stick together when they have a
- 30:49Speaker 3: good creative relationship because it is familiarity and it opens
- 30:53Speaker 3: up the creative process even more so.
- 30:55Speaker 5: I absolutely even the first day we were shooting on
- 31:00Speaker 5: midnight in the Switchcraft so our film, I was like,
- 31:03Speaker 5: I felt so relaxed, and I was like, oh man,
- 31:06Speaker 5: it was.
- 31:06Speaker 2: It was great, you know.
- 31:07Speaker 5: And whenever I feel like that, it just the best
- 31:10Speaker 5: always comes out of me. It's just that's just the
- 31:13Speaker 5: way it is. That's what Robert de Niro even said
- 31:15Speaker 5: that in an interview. He was like, the most important
- 31:17Speaker 5: thing for actors is to be just relaxed. You know.
- 31:20Speaker 3: I agree with you, and I'll tell you something I have.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I was the most relaxed day one. I probably would
- 31:25Speaker 3: have been like an insane asylum patient, but because you know,
- 31:29Speaker 3: I had you there on day one, it was the
- 31:31Speaker 3: same for me. I literally was like, dude, I got this.
- 31:35Speaker 3: This is my friend of mine and he's here to
- 31:37Speaker 3: create and I trust him and he's going to just
- 31:40Speaker 3: bring it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And this actor director romance that you guys have it's
- 31:45Speaker 1: really sweet. I really love that.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Wait one last thing before because I want to talk
- 31:49Speaker 3: about the music. I gotta tell a story. People don't
- 31:52Speaker 3: realize that Carnies, Emil and I. It's our favorite hamburger place.
- 31:57Speaker 3: There's one on Sunset, one on Ventura. How many movies
- 32:02Speaker 3: have come out of that? When we've run into each
- 32:04Speaker 3: other at Carney's. I mean it's pretty epic.
- 32:06Speaker 5: I mean it's amazing. I ran into Randall. I was
- 32:09Speaker 5: eating a burger alone at Carney's and I ran into Rentald.
- 32:12Speaker 5: I was like, what's up, dude, what are you doing.
- 32:14Speaker 5: He's like, what's going on? Well, I just did this
- 32:16Speaker 5: movie with Quinn blah blah blah. And he's like, oh,
- 32:18Speaker 5: I'm making this movie with mel Gibson right now. And
- 32:20Speaker 5: I was like, oh, that sounds amazing. And then you
- 32:22Speaker 5: were like it was like a light bulb went off.
- 32:24Speaker 5: You're like, yeah, I'm gonna call your agent about it tomorrow.
- 32:26Speaker 5: I was like, sounds good to me, this sounds amazing.
- 32:29Speaker 1: This it is all so Hollywood. Can I tell you
- 32:32Speaker 1: this is like the shit I would imagine when I
- 32:34Speaker 1: lived in Utah, Like, I bet that's how it goes down.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I swear to you. I was eating I was by myself.
- 32:39Speaker 3: By the way, I was by myself too, or maybe
- 32:41Speaker 3: I was assistant. I can't remember, but I literally Meil
- 32:45Speaker 3: said he just finished. I was like, oh my god,
- 32:47Speaker 3: we don't have a lead for this movie a Meal,
- 32:49Speaker 3: and a Meal was like, dude, send it to me.
- 32:50Speaker 3: I called this agent. I think it was like three
- 32:52Speaker 3: or four days later, a meal we were doing the deal.
- 32:54Speaker 3: It was pretty epic.
- 32:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it was so quick. I was like, man, I
- 32:58Speaker 5: was the best burger I've ever had. I love Carnie before,
- 33:01Speaker 5: but now I love Carnie. And and by the way,
- 33:05Speaker 5: like I love that movie. I watched it recently a
- 33:08Speaker 5: couple of times. Sports of Nature Michael Polish's movie, and
- 33:11Speaker 5: the part it's just it's it's such an entertaining role
- 33:16Speaker 5: is like mel is vintage mel It's like the part
- 33:19Speaker 5: you want to see mel in, like the leap a
- 33:22Speaker 5: weapon guy, like thirty five years later.
- 33:25Speaker 2: I agree.
- 33:26Speaker 3: By the way, we're having actually Michael and Kate Bosworth
- 33:30Speaker 3: on the Week after You, So that's so that's perfect segment.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Yeah right, yeah, okay, Meil, I have the movie. I
- 33:39Speaker 1: have seen that movie, and it's fun. I have to
- 33:42Speaker 1: ask you about your new music. I'm a music head.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Tell me everything, Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 2: How did this start? And everything? Tell us?
- 33:50Speaker 5: Well, the music originally started. I did this movie with JK.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Simmons called All Nighter, and I played a bluegrass singer
- 33:57Speaker 5: and they gave me like a real band to work
- 34:00Speaker 5: with for a few songs. I had to sing in
- 34:01Speaker 5: the movie, and my buddy was I played a cover
- 34:05Speaker 5: song we did my brother. My buddy was like, that's cool.
- 34:08Speaker 5: He's like, why don't you record some originals. So I
- 34:12Speaker 5: started sitting down and I started like writing out melodies
- 34:15Speaker 5: and lyrics, and then I took them to the band
- 34:17Speaker 5: and they were like, these are cool. So we ended
- 34:19Speaker 5: up literally recording an entire bluegrass album in the genre
- 34:24Speaker 5: of the band player that I did. So it was
- 34:26Speaker 5: like some weird, like messed actor experiment where it's like
- 34:29Speaker 5: I made the album of the character's band and we
- 34:33Speaker 5: like released it. It's called the album was called Simple Things.
- 34:36Speaker 5: It's actually out by our band name in the movie
- 34:39Speaker 5: was Hysterical Kindness, and we kept that. Oh and I really,
- 34:42Speaker 5: I really enjoyed the process of songwriting so much that
- 34:46Speaker 5: I kept writing songs after the movie. And this was
- 34:49Speaker 5: five This was five years ago now, so I've been
- 34:51Speaker 5: songwriting for the last five years, and I've been working
- 34:55Speaker 5: with like different producers, and I moved on from the
- 34:58Speaker 5: guys that did hystorical kindness because they were kind of
- 35:01Speaker 5: getting into some other stuff and I worked with these
- 35:03Speaker 5: other kind of rock producers and different and then I
- 35:05Speaker 5: finally found this French guy and the Frenchman Matchiu Carratier, Okay,
- 35:10Speaker 5: and he he was He's like this French Urson Weld
- 35:14Speaker 5: kind of dude who's like so talented and kind of
- 35:19Speaker 5: very like just like a dark, like gutey voice, very
- 35:23Speaker 5: serious kind of guy. And he was. We had a
- 35:27Speaker 5: mutual friend and we made one song together and I
- 35:30Speaker 5: was like, this is kind of like a this is
- 35:32Speaker 5: an interesting sound. And we made a few songs and
- 35:34Speaker 5: then we finally kind of hit the vein of almost
- 35:37Speaker 5: like kind of like the Weekend song Blinding Lights, where
- 35:41Speaker 5: it's got a little like retro eighties, but it's like
- 35:46Speaker 5: it feels fresh and new, almost like it could be
- 35:48Speaker 5: on The Drive soundtrack or something, and we just we
- 35:52Speaker 5: just really we just really pushed in that direction, and
- 35:55Speaker 5: we worked NonStop pretty much for like almost a year,
- 35:59Speaker 5: and we made this album called Mnemonic, somewhat based off
- 36:02Speaker 5: the Johnny Knaemonic movie, which I thought, I just love
- 36:05Speaker 5: that word mnemonic and it's like device and I.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Was like, yeah, no, it's really good. And whereable where
- 36:12Speaker 1: can we download your music because I'm about to do
- 36:16Speaker 1: that as soon as we Yeah, I'm like.
- 36:18Speaker 5: Well, you can get it. It's basically you can get
- 36:21Speaker 5: it on any music platform. It's under hersh and it's
- 36:25Speaker 5: like Spotify or Apple Music or Google Player title or
- 36:28Speaker 5: Deezer or any any one of those places. Even YouTube.
- 36:31Speaker 5: You can hear the songs. And we've made we put
- 36:34Speaker 5: out now twenty two songs. We just put this song
- 36:37Speaker 5: out last week called Favors, which is actually probably it's
- 36:41Speaker 5: kind of considered by like the music people in the
- 36:44Speaker 5: radio world to be our best most commercial song or whatnot.
- 36:48Speaker 5: And it's you know what's crazy. I sent it to
- 36:51Speaker 5: this buddy of mine, this guy Steven Servanka, and he
- 36:53Speaker 5: called me back and he's in the music business and
- 36:55Speaker 5: he's like, dude, this is like it's pretty radio where
- 36:57Speaker 5: he's like, I'm going to send this to my contact
- 36:59Speaker 5: at Deezer Wow. And he sent it to his buddy
- 37:02Speaker 5: at Deezer and the guy pitched it to Deezer and
- 37:04Speaker 5: Deezer is like Spotify, but they're huge and like Latin
- 37:07Speaker 5: America and Yeah, France, and they put us number three
- 37:14Speaker 5: on their biggest playlist, which is the selection on for
- 37:17Speaker 5: Mexico and Central America. It's got six point seven million
- 37:23Speaker 5: followers of the playlist and they put his number three, dude,
- 37:27Speaker 5: after Fiona Apple and this amazing artist.
- 37:29Speaker 1: God.
- 37:30Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like, it's crazy.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Dude, We're on not only with a movie start now
- 37:34Speaker 3: we have a rock star, music star.
- 37:37Speaker 2: This is we're gonna download this.
- 37:39Speaker 1: You you just start like, how long have you been
- 37:42Speaker 1: doing music? Like you said, you have twenty two songs
- 37:45Speaker 1: that you that you guys have done. When did you
- 37:48Speaker 1: do your first song?
- 37:49Speaker 5: The first song was the first album for uh that
- 37:54Speaker 5: was five years ago for the Okay movie. So we
- 37:56Speaker 5: recorded a whole bluegrass album. I really cut my teeth
- 38:00Speaker 5: on the process of songwriting and everything like that and
- 38:03Speaker 5: learning about it, and then I made a bunch of
- 38:05Speaker 5: songs with other producers in between over the years. And
- 38:08Speaker 5: then like a year and a half ago, me and
- 38:11Speaker 5: Matthew started working together and then we just kind of
- 38:13Speaker 5: really partnered up and made this our main jam and
- 38:16Speaker 5: we've been we've been making songs during quarantine. I'll like
- 38:19Speaker 5: send them my ideas and we'll get together and we
- 38:21Speaker 5: even like recorded like socially distanced, where like I bought
- 38:25Speaker 5: them like a forty foot microphone ports like in the
- 38:27Speaker 5: other wing of I'm in the other wing of the house,
- 38:30Speaker 5: you know what I mean. Yeah, so we're we're still
- 38:34Speaker 5: going for it. And like, for me, it's just something
- 38:37Speaker 5: that I love doing, and I you know, I love
- 38:39Speaker 5: music and it's not it's not like about like it's
- 38:44Speaker 5: definitely not about money because in order to make money
- 38:47Speaker 5: in the music business, Like I looked at the money
- 38:50Speaker 5: that we made, it was like, uve me five.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Hundred dollars exactly.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Like it's that it's a really tough business to like
- 38:56Speaker 5: make money. But for me, I just love music. And
- 39:01Speaker 5: there's a longevity to it too, Like you can go
- 39:03Speaker 5: back and listen to songs. Someone, I still listen to
- 39:06Speaker 5: so many old songs like forty years ago, fifty years ago.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Oh that's what I live off of. I live off
- 39:11Speaker 1: of all of these old school songs. And I also
- 39:15Speaker 1: make music. And for me, you know, I've done the
- 39:17Speaker 1: same thing that you've done where I look at it
- 39:19Speaker 1: and I'm like, wow, I mean three hundred bucks this
- 39:22Speaker 1: month off that song and it's like you don't do
- 39:24Speaker 1: it for the money. It's so therapeutic and just fun
- 39:26Speaker 1: to do.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Will you ever go on tour meal?
- 39:29Speaker 1: Oh? I like that.
- 39:30Speaker 5: I would in a heartbeat for sure.
- 39:32Speaker 2: That's dough, that's really cool.
- 39:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I would in a heartbeat for sure. I mean,
- 39:36Speaker 5: we have twenty two songs. If we get like another,
- 39:39Speaker 5: I don't know how many, but I really want to
- 39:41Speaker 5: get enough to where like if we have like a
- 39:43Speaker 5: live performance like lineup of songs, you know, They's just
- 39:48Speaker 5: the thing I don't like is when there's like one
- 39:50Speaker 5: song everybody wants to hear, and then the rest people
- 39:53Speaker 5: don't know or they don't care about like I would.
- 39:54Speaker 5: I would really want something that like everybody dug and right.
- 39:57Speaker 5: You know, there's such a there's such a stigma around
- 40:00Speaker 5: actors that do music right. It's honestly one of people's
- 40:03Speaker 5: like most relish stigmas, Like they really it's like, oh actor.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Music, Well, well, musicians, as you know, historically want to
- 40:11Speaker 3: act and actors want to do music. But I will
- 40:13Speaker 3: tell you it's so weird to have a sting. But
- 40:15Speaker 3: because actors are artists and artists do everything, so I
- 40:21Speaker 3: think like when actors do music.
- 40:23Speaker 1: It's pretty odd you grow up in the arts art.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Exactly exactly agree with that.
- 40:29Speaker 5: I do think though that, you know, it did take me,
- 40:33Speaker 5: you know, a good five years of songwriting before we
- 40:37Speaker 5: started making songs that like we're getting on these types
- 40:40Speaker 5: of playlists that we're on on Spotify and Deezer in
- 40:42Speaker 5: all these places. So it wasn't It wasn't. It's definitely
- 40:46Speaker 5: not something that was like if you try to jump
- 40:49Speaker 5: into it and like make an album in a month
- 40:51Speaker 5: and do it for the first time, like I could
- 40:53Speaker 5: see how that could go real south, real quick, you know.
- 40:57Speaker 5: But I think I think because we had so much
- 41:01Speaker 5: time to like keep learning and listening to more music
- 41:04Speaker 5: and like kind of adjusting and finessing, it was I mean,
- 41:08Speaker 5: five years is like kind of a like I look background,
- 41:11Speaker 5: I'm like, god.
- 41:11Speaker 1: That's a long time.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like a long time, you know what I mean?
- 41:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's you you made something that is amazing because
- 41:17Speaker 1: I know exactly those people you're talking about that push
- 41:21Speaker 1: an album out in a month and you're like, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 1: the first song you can tell how much they worked
- 41:25Speaker 1: on it, and then the rest of the songs are
- 41:27Speaker 1: like what you were talking about like they kind of
- 41:29Speaker 1: it goes south.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I gotta say, first of all, we're running
- 41:34Speaker 3: out of timeer, but I gotta say something, mail anything.
- 41:36Speaker 1: To download every song.
- 41:37Speaker 2: I know you by the.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Way, a mail, she'll she'll know all your songs by
- 41:40Speaker 3: the next time we see you. But I just got
- 41:43Speaker 3: to say, I just got to say, I can't thank
- 41:45Speaker 3: you enough for being on our show and doing this
- 41:47Speaker 3: for us, and doing it under the situation that we're
- 41:50Speaker 3: all living in. You're an amazing artist, amazing performer. Your
- 41:55Speaker 3: music everybody should download it and check it out. And
- 41:58Speaker 3: h is there anything you want to say before we
- 42:01Speaker 3: say lovey or goodbye or all whatever you say.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Thank you so much for thank you so much for
- 42:06Speaker 5: having me on. And I know it's a difficult time
- 42:08Speaker 5: for everybody right now, so I just want to give
- 42:11Speaker 5: shouts out to everyone and all the all everybody, everybody
- 42:14Speaker 5: keeping the world running right now. You know, I went
- 42:16Speaker 5: to the grocery store the other day and I was like,
- 42:18Speaker 5: thanking the people bagging the groceries. I was like, dude,
- 42:20Speaker 5: you got you guys are the heroes right now, you
- 42:22Speaker 5: know what I mean. So I just respect to everybody
- 42:25Speaker 5: that is keeping the world running right now, like they
- 42:28Speaker 5: really are the heroes. And just thanks for thanks for
- 42:32Speaker 5: having me on. Man. I I really I really appreciated
- 42:36Speaker 5: our relationship from the very beginning and it's a lot
- 42:39Speaker 5: of fun. And you guys are special people, so I
- 42:41Speaker 5: was super happy to come on and and you know,
- 42:44Speaker 5: there's nothing funner, more fun than like, uh, there's nothing
- 42:49Speaker 5: more fun than like a musician peddling their music. So
- 42:52Speaker 5: I do relish the opportunity to emil.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having you.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Yes, it's an honor. Thank you all right, buddy, we'll
- 43:01Speaker 2: talk to you soon.
- 43:02Speaker 5: Thanks Hurst you guys have a great day.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Damn.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I love when our guests leave me super inspired, like
- 43:09Speaker 1: I need to go out and work a lot harder.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Now. Did he motivate you on Monday?
- 43:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he motivated me on Monday. Okay, so that was amazing.
- 43:16Speaker 1: You guys, I want to thank you so much for
- 43:18Speaker 1: listening to give them la la with Randall. We love
- 43:21Speaker 1: you guys. We hope you stay safe and healthy and
- 43:25Speaker 1: slay the day babies. We'll see you next week.
