Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Tides Of Death With JASON EVANS From INGESTED
Transcript
- 0:24Yo. I'm Jason from Ingested and we have a brand new album called The
- 0:29Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams, which is out April or fourth through Metal
- 0:34Blade Records. Yautiful, Jason, thanks for joining us the same name.
- 0:39Thank you, It's nice to be here, pleasure to have you made.
- 0:42Say you mentioned your new album, The Tide of Death and Fractured Dreams,
- 0:45which comes out in April. Mate, So how do you feel about like
- 0:48it's still a fair way off? Like you do you allow yourself to get
- 0:51excited or are you're just anxious for him to get out there? A bit
- 0:54of both. Really, We've been sitting on this album, oh, sence
- 1:00y well over a year now, So this album has been done for well
- 1:03over a year. We released our last album as She's Lie Still in November
- 1:08twenty twenty two, and then four weeks after that album was released in December
- 1:15twenty twenty two, we went into the studio and recorded The Tider Definitely Fractured
- 1:21Dreams. So we've been we've had this album done and dusted for like well
- 1:26over a year. But the way that we'd like to work is we like
- 1:34to work ahead, so because we're always writing so when an album's done,
- 1:41it's done. Let let's just get in there, get in the studio,
- 1:44get it recorded. And then what we're doing then is we're giving ourselves time
- 1:51to really prepare for the announcement and the release of the album. So we've
- 1:56had like a year to make sure the artwork looked amazing, to make sure
- 2:00the music videos are all looking great. So yeah, like that's that's kind
- 2:07of that's kind of how we like to work because we don't we'd rather give
- 2:12ourselves the time to make sure everything's exactly how we want it to be for
- 2:16the presentation of the album. So then when it does finally get announced and
- 2:22people know that it's coming, everything's ready to go, do you know what
- 2:25I mean? We're not. We're not like rushing around or running around like
- 2:29Edla's chickens. Everything done. So yeah, I'm just I'm just excited to
- 2:34finally announce to everyone that it exists and that it's coming out and they don't
- 2:39have to wait that long, do you know what I mean. But in
- 2:42the meantime, we've just released the first single, Paragon of Purity, with
- 2:47a music video on our Ingested TV YouTube channel that's doing really well, all
- 2:57our fans seem to love it, which is great. And then we've got
- 3:00more. We've got more coming out in the run up to the album's release,
- 3:05and probably probably beyond the album's release as well. We've got we've got
- 3:07loads of stuff coming so it's exciting. We've just announced the headline tour through
- 3:13the UK and Europe which runs through April and May. We're checking out for
- 3:19Loojjah Bover Dinner Awesome. So yeah, it's I'm excited. It's going to
- 3:24be another and yet another very busy year for us because we don't stop.
- 3:28We never stopped. We're all we're always working out bollocks off. So that's
- 3:31what we like it though, do you know what I mean, like to
- 3:34stay busy. So yeah, I'm just excited for the for the year,
- 3:37for everything that's to come. Really good. Now, I normally don't ask
- 3:39this question right because to me, it's just cliche and it's it's a question
- 3:44that people who would no imagination ask generally. But I've got to ask you
- 3:47about the title, mate, like the Tide of Depth and Fractured Dreams,
- 3:51It's it's both brightening and beautiful at the same time. Yeah, exactly,
- 3:57and that's the point, and I think I think that's the whole point of
- 4:00the album. If you look at the album artwork as well, it's frightening
- 4:05and beautiful. Like it's that juxtaposition. Sean came up with the title for
- 4:12the album. It's actually a lyric in some in one of the songs on
- 4:15the the lyrics that he wrote, and we all loved it, loved the
- 4:21line so much that we were just like, that's it. That's the that's
- 4:26the title. That's the title of the album. I mean, what Sean's
- 4:30meaning behind it is, I'm not sure it. I don't I don't know
- 4:38what his personal meaning is, don't We don't really discuss those sort of things,
- 4:44if you know what I mean. But what my take from it is
- 4:46what the album title means to me is with our last album, Ash's Lie
- 4:51Still that that album was born of a very dark period Bros. As a
- 4:57band and in our personal lives, we were all the with a lot of
- 5:00demons like depression and various addictions, whether it's drugs or alcohol, and loss
- 5:10as well. Sean was dealing with the loss of his father through that period,
- 5:13so we were all in a pretty bad spot, really which is why
- 5:16that album is the way that it is, Like, it's very is it's
- 5:24a very dark album, like the themes of it. The feel of that
- 5:27album is very morose, if you know what I mean. Because for us,
- 5:31that album was getting it off our chest, like what we were going
- 5:34through at the time, Whereas this album, the Tide of deaferent, fractured
- 5:40dreams, this is us coming out at the other end of that period,
- 5:46like better, bigger, stronger, better than we've ever been before, happy
- 5:49in ourselves as people, do you know what I mean? Like this is
- 5:54this is us like coming full force now. So whereas whereas Ashley's life still
- 6:00was it was like I said, it was like it was like therapy.
- 6:03It was like it was like cathartic, you know, getting all that ship
- 6:08off our chests and getting it out there and putting it into putting all our
- 6:13feelings into music. Whereas this this is us coming for blood. We're coming
- 6:19to collect heads like that. The purpose of this album is to tear your
- 6:27fucking head off your shoulders. That's what this is like. So this is
- 6:31the tide of death. It's washing away all the fractured dreams that we had
- 6:36and now we're coming. This is a tsunami of death metal that's just going
- 6:41to annihilate everything that's in its path. That's the way I see it.
- 6:46Born with you, brother, I'm not even gonna argue with that sort of
- 6:48statement. Can you take us inside the album a bit more from a musical
- 6:55point of view and what you're going forward it? Yeah, well we were
- 6:59just like I said, we we we've come out at the end of that
- 7:04ship period with with a different energy, with like a renewed vigor, if
- 7:15you know what I mean. Like, so now this is like straight up
- 7:23masterclass of modern death metal. That's what this is about. The the intent
- 7:28behind this album is completely different from the previous one. So like I said,
- 7:33it's just this is just it's a musical buzzsaw. It's a musical power
- 7:40drill that's just going to smash you to pieces. Yeah, we're just the
- 7:46energy that like the energy when we were writing the album and the energy when
- 7:49we were recording it is just night and day from the last one. Right,
- 7:56this is like this is us back as in Jest did with that big
- 8:01old fucking chip on our shoulder, with that point to prove that we always
- 8:05had three guys from fucking working class, council estate backgrounds who don't give a
- 8:13fuck what anyone thinks, that are just going to do things on their terms,
- 8:18do things their way like we always fucking have. And now we just
- 8:22feel we feel like whatever weights and shackles were holding us down, whether that
- 8:31be in the band or in our personal lives, those weights and shackles have
- 8:35gone. There's no chains holding us down anymore. So now we're just it's
- 8:41just a whorldwind, like it's just a frenzied WorldWind, and and we're just
- 8:48coming. Like I said, we're just coming for blood. This is a
- 8:52brutal album and that is the point of it. The point of it is
- 8:56to be a brutal death metal album. Now we get to Now we get
- 9:01to unleash it on the world and then go and play these fucking songs all
- 9:07over the fucking globe and smash people's fucking head fucking heads in and you're happy
- 9:13a bit out that it's fucking awesome. Look, this is the reason why
- 9:18why I'm in a metal band. I didn't get into a metal band to
- 9:24appease people or oh, oh, we have to make music. This is
- 9:28what this is what the fans want or this is what these people want?
- 9:31Oh no, Nah, We're in a band because we want to make music
- 9:35that we want to listen to. We do this for us, and if
- 9:41and if our fans love it, that's amazing and I can't thank our I
- 9:45can't thank our fans enough. But first and foremost, we do this for
- 9:48us because we love the game. Do you know what I mean? I
- 9:52got into being I wanted to be in a metal band because I don't want
- 9:56to follow the rules. I want to go around raising hell. Do you
- 10:00know what I mean? I want to go around kicking everybody's fucking ass like
- 10:03a fucking death metal stone called Steve Austin. Do you know what I'm saying?
- 10:07You know what I mean? Though? That's why, that's why I
- 10:09want to be in a metal band. If not, I'd go and get
- 10:11a job in an office and put a suit and a tie on and sit
- 10:15behind a fucking computer screen all day. But that's not what I want.
- 10:18I want to go out. I want to break the rules. I want
- 10:20to fucking just tear shit up. So that's that's what this is about.
- 10:28This, this is about us just doing things on our terms with a big
- 10:33fucking chip on our shoulder and saying fuck you to everybody who doubts us,
- 10:39demn strive our friend. You've also featured kiss vocalist Mark Hanna from Shaimira on
- 10:45the track in Nothingness of Names, Josh Middleton from Stylysis on Expected Fail.
- 10:48So tell us about those songs and what each of them brought to it.
- 10:54Well, we'd expect to fail. With Josh. We've known Josh for years
- 11:00because obviously Silosis and Ingested came up through the same UK scene around the same
- 11:05time, so we've known We've known Josh for years, so we've always we've
- 11:09always wanted him on a track. But the way that we do guest vocals
- 11:15is we're we always have an idea of the people that we want, but
- 11:22we're not just gonna get him on any old song just to get him on
- 11:26a song. The song has to be right because if you because my view
- 11:31on guest vocals is the song and the guest vocalists both have to compliment and
- 11:41elevate each other. It has to work, it has to make sense,
- 11:46and the way that we do guest vocals is well. One of my one
- 11:50of my pet hates at the moment in this scene is bands that get a
- 11:56guest vocalist and they just whack them on a fifteen twenty twenty second segment at
- 12:03the end of a song. Is the fucking point. Yeah, it's just
- 12:07cloud chasing. It's just cloud chasing. You're just doing it so you can
- 12:09say that you've got mister fucking x y r Z on on your song for
- 12:16whatever, like do you know what I mean? And it's like you're doing
- 12:18nothing, It does nothing for the song. What's the point in having them
- 12:22there? It's stupid, Like it just like it just it's just so obvious
- 12:28to me, like do you know what I mean? And that's fine if
- 12:31that's the way that you want to go, it's your fucking band, Like
- 12:33I don't give a shit, Like do you know what I mean? But
- 12:35for me, it's like it's just that's just not the way that we do
- 12:41things. Like everything has to make sense. They're got and if we have
- 12:43a guest vocalist, they're gonna be on the whole fucking song. Yep,
- 12:46do you know what I mean? Because it's like it only seems to be
- 12:50metal or death metal that or death card that this like fifteen to twenty second
- 12:58appearance, slapped on a fucking breakdown at the end of the song, like
- 13:01it seems to be a thing if you look in the fucking pop charts or
- 13:05whatever, or fucking hip hop or any other fucking genre of music when artists
- 13:11collaborate that that isn't a thing. They're on the whole fucking song. It's
- 13:16not like a fucking Beyonce song. And then Shakira turns up for a fucking
- 13:20breakdown at the end for ten seconds and then fucks off. Do you know
- 13:22what I mean? It's like it has to be it has to make sense.
- 13:28It means it's got to be a song, like it's gotta make sense
- 13:31for the song or otherwise it's just it's just bullshit. So the way that
- 13:35we do it is the song has to be right and it has to make
- 13:41sense. So we wanted Josh for Ages to do a song with us,
- 13:45but but the song just never happened, if you know what I mean.
- 13:50Like that the song that we were like, that's the one, Like it
- 13:54never happened until the expect to fail right and we were like, this is
- 13:58the fucking one. This is a fucking one like Josh would sound fucking amazing
- 14:01on this. So we just were We sent him the song and just said
- 14:05like, look, we think the song you'd sound amazing on and would you
- 14:09be up for it? And he was like absolutely, like absolutely, So
- 14:16the same night, a couple of hours later, he sent us the song
- 14:18back and he'd done it, and we were like, fucking hell, he's
- 14:22nailed it. Like he's nailed it. He's fucking smashed it out of the
- 14:24park. So that's that's a I really love that song. I think it's
- 14:28great. Mark Mark count from Kimera was a little bit different. Kimera has
- 14:33always been a really important band for me and Sean for us growing up,
- 14:39Like The Impossibility of Reason is like a really important album, Like for us
- 14:43it's like top five metal albums of all time. It's such a perfect record.
- 14:48And obviously he's like a massive influence on me as a vocalist. So
- 14:54he's always kind of been like a bucket list, do you know what I
- 14:58mean? Like, oh, god bloo, to get Mark Hunter on a
- 15:01on a song that would be absolutely amazing. But we but it was one
- 15:05of them ones where it's like we don't know them or have like a personal
- 15:11connection with them. Or anything. So that for us is always we don't
- 15:16really ask people unless we know them, Like we always thought, oh,
- 15:22it's just gonna be one that will never happen, like do you know what
- 15:24I mean? It was just kind of like when I pipe dream start things.
- 15:30But then out of the blue, when we were in the in the
- 15:33studio recording, Sean was on like Twitter and he's like fucking hell, oh
- 15:43my god, And I was like what and He's like, Mark Hunters just
- 15:46fucking tweeted about us or retweeted or reply. I don't know how Twitter works,
- 15:52like it said something about us on Twitter in some form, and then
- 16:00I'm like, what, what the fuck? Like, so Sean messages him
- 16:04and says like, oh, Mark, thanks for the kind of words,
- 16:07like honestly, like that really means a lot to us, Like we're massive
- 16:11fans, so that's like that's a really this is that's a really big deal
- 16:15for us, Like do you know what I mean? And then he replied
- 16:18and he said, oh, no, worries love the band Like that,
- 16:22we were just like what the fuck? And then a couple of days later,
- 16:29I finished recording the vocals for Enhingness and we're and we're sitting in the
- 16:33studio and like listening back to the track and listening to it over and over
- 16:37again, and I'm just sitting there and I'm thinking, Summit, some just
- 16:45something missing, there's something missing, like I can't put my finger on when
- 16:51it is something's missing. And then I'm listening to it and listening to it
- 16:53and listening to it, and then it gets to the to the chorus to
- 16:56the hook. But and in my head I could I could like hear Mark
- 17:03Hunters singing it. Why because it's like like with that, you know,
- 17:10like he's clean sot, He's kind of like singing. And I was like
- 17:15Sean, I'm like, Marken sounds fucking well good on this. And then
- 17:22Sean's like, just ask him then, and we're like, well, what's
- 17:26the worst he can say? No? Do you know what I mean?
- 17:27We've got like a contact to him. Now, You've had a chat with
- 17:30him, so it's not like we're just asking him out of the blue,
- 17:33like you've you've already spoke to him a bit like so just ask him.
- 17:37He'll either say yeah, say no, and then if he says no,
- 17:41we'll figure something out, like do you know what I mean? So Sean
- 17:44asked him. He said like, look, we're in the studio right now.
- 17:48We've got a song that we think you would really shine on, like
- 17:52it would really work and with your voice, would you be up for appearing
- 18:00on the song? And he was like, fuck yeah, send me the
- 18:03song. And we were just like, oh my god. So we sent
- 18:07him the song. A couple of days later, he sent it back and
- 18:11we were just like holy shit, like holy shit, like because it's like
- 18:15you grow up listening to this band and then you hear his voice on your
- 18:19song and you just like what, oh, yeah, that was fucking amazing,
- 18:29Like it was amazing, like blown away. So yeah, that's how
- 18:33that's how those came about. Like the Joshua like we we knew it was
- 18:37always going to happen. It was just a matter of time and finding the
- 18:41right song. But with Mark Hunt from Chaimera, that was that was a
- 18:45little bit more outside the box and like a bit of a weird coincidence,
- 18:48if you know what I mean. So, oh, congratulations, man,
- 18:51that's a nice story. That touched on this before, but it Jest have
- 18:56released an album roughly every twelve months since the twenties. Only God Bay Trade
- 19:00like, but by doing that, have you found that the band's gone a
- 19:04lot tighter and you're you're going in different directions musically, I guess because you're
- 19:08writing and recordings so much. Yeah, yeah, I mean the thing the
- 19:15thing with us is because like I said earlier, we write music for ourselves
- 19:22first and foremost. We're always writing music for ourselves, so we're writing exactly
- 19:26what we want to hear. But with that, we we're always moving in
- 19:36a direction. We're always moving. It doesn't matter what direction that is.
- 19:41As long as it's like moving, We'll never get bored. Because that's the
- 19:48thing, because we always say, like when we get bored of this,
- 19:51it's done. We're not gonna We're never gonna phone it in. We're never
- 19:53gonna We're never gonna just do it just because do you know what I mean?
- 19:59Well, we do it becau we love it so the like the way
- 20:03that the way that we write albums is every time we write an album,
- 20:14we're always adding new elements in so each album, even though they all sound
- 20:21like ingested, they don't sound the same, but they all have their own
- 20:25individual character because we're always we're always trying new stuff. We're always like adding
- 20:32little bits, little things like oh, let's try this in this song,
- 20:36Let's try that in this song, Like do you know what I mean?
- 20:37So there's always just little bits that are just it's like, say, you've
- 20:42got a big toolbox. So we start we started our career with a toolbox
- 20:49that only had a sledge jammer in it, right, And then as the
- 20:55years have gone on and as we've wrote each album, we've added new tools
- 20:59into the tool box. And now we're getting to a point where we've got
- 21:03an entire tool set, and we'll getting to the point where we've nearly got
- 21:06a tool for every job. I fucking love your analogies made if you're spot
- 21:11on with the way you describe things as great. So, yeah, so
- 21:15that's what we're doing. We're just we're just we're just building this toolbox,
- 21:19and every album we're just adding new tools in and we're adding new sounds,
- 21:25new new elements, new things, something that we might not have done for
- 21:29a few years. And then we've gone off ship, remember this tool Excuse
- 21:34me, sorry, I've got a bit of chest infection at the moment.
- 21:37But yeah, so that's that's how it is, like, we just we
- 21:41just constantly. I like to describe Ingested as like a musical shark because it
- 21:45always has to be moving in a direction because if it stops or tries to
- 21:51go backwards, it'll it'll drown, it will will die because we'll get bored.
- 21:56Like we can't we can't stagnate, we can't stop. So it's always
- 22:00got to be moving in a direction all the time. And yeah, and
- 22:03I think we're getting we're getting to a point where we're really becoming the depth
- 22:11writing these albums because for us, the what's what's become very important for us
- 22:17when we're writing albums recently is like the story of the album, not like
- 22:26not like the narrative, but I mean the journey that the album takes you
- 22:30on. So for us now it's it's very important for an album to have
- 22:36a beginning and middle and an end, so there's a purpose, like there's
- 22:41an ebb and flow to like the actual album, like throughout the entire thing.
- 22:45Because what we used to do was it would just be like, oh,
- 22:48let's just write ten bangers, do you know what I mean? And
- 22:51then it's just a collection of songs, isn't it like do you know what
- 22:52I mean? If you listen to like some of our old albums, they're
- 22:56just it's just ten songs. There's no coherent yeah, yeah, there's no
- 23:03flow to it. So now it's like we when we writeing an album,
- 23:06we're looking at the entire we're looking at the bigger picture of the actual album.
- 23:11So everything is very meticulous. The reason why the songs are the way
- 23:15that they are and that they're in the order that they're in is all by
- 23:18design, like on purpose to create this this ebb and flow, This this
- 23:25journey that you that you take when you listen to the album is designed to
- 23:30be listened to in one go. You can listen to the song separately,
- 23:33obviously, but the purpose of it is to listen to it in one go,
- 23:37like it's got a journey to it. I think that that's probably that's
- 23:41probably one of the biggest the biggest changes to the way that we write albums
- 23:45now is that is that focus on the album being a complete work very true.
- 23:56Now. You can mentioned before when you're talking about touring, that's something
- 23:59about a global tour. So does that mean that you're gonna come over this
- 24:03side of the world and visit us? Yeah, Well, hopefully we came.
- 24:07When did we came over last year for the first time ever? How's
- 24:12your got? It was amazing? It was awesome, Like it was awesome.
- 24:17It was hard work because obviously you've got to fly to every show,
- 24:19which we've never done before. Like usually it's like, you know, you
- 24:25fly to America and then you're in a fucking a bus or a van or
- 24:27whatever or an RV and then you're driving around for a month or it's the
- 24:32same in Europe, you're fucking you'll drive around the whole thing. Whereas Australia,
- 24:40obviously, because it's so big and everything so like spread out, you
- 24:45have to fly from every show. Like so we're flying literally in in the
- 24:51morning, go into the show, playing the show, go to the airport,
- 24:55fly to the next show, do the same, do the same.
- 24:57That is it's crazy because because we've only because we've never never experienced that before.
- 25:03So that was like, what the fuck it was? It was awesome,
- 25:08Like the shows were amazing. I mean, it's took us eighteen nearly
- 25:12eighteen years, seventeen years to get there, so like all the fans were
