- 0:00Speaker 1: All right there.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Eight oh five thirteen ten WI B A and ask
- 0:07Speaker 2: the experts, joined this morning by Andrew Larson. Andrew, of course,
- 0:10Speaker 2: comes to us from Larsen Home Services. The website Larsendhomes
- 0:14Speaker 2: Services dot com.
- 0:15Speaker 1: That's L A R.
- 0:17Speaker 2: S O N Home Services dot Com. Telephone number six
- 0:20Speaker 2: oh eight five three five forty three forty three. That's
- 0:23Speaker 2: five three five four three four three. Andrew, are you
- 0:27Speaker 2: keeping warm right now?
- 0:29Speaker 1: I am. It's good. I mean as good as I can.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But I mean I'm inside. Yeah, you know. I'm doing
- 0:36Speaker 1: this thing right now called seventy five hard. Some of
- 0:38Speaker 1: our listeners have probably heard of it, but it's a
- 0:40Speaker 1: it's a fitness challenge, and it's it's one workout a
- 0:43Speaker 1: day inside, it's one workout a day outside. It's drinking
- 0:46Speaker 1: a gallon of water, it's reading books, it's no alcohol,
- 0:50Speaker 1: it's sticking to a diet like it's wow. It's called
- 0:53Speaker 1: seventy five Hards. So right now, every single day I
- 0:57Speaker 1: have to get some sort of workout in outside for
- 1:00Speaker 1: forty five minutes. Oh my good, I can tell you
- 1:02Speaker 1: how fun that is. Right now?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well, you know what, Andrew, I once you're done with it,
- 1:09Speaker 2: the rewards will be great and you'll truly appreciate comfort.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And it's funny you mentioned your inside at home indoors
- 1:17Speaker 2: because generally comfortable, but not universally comfortable. Unfortunately for some folks,
- 1:23Speaker 2: their houses are not particularly comfortable, and it's a lot
- 1:26Speaker 2: to do with how their home home performs. And you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: one of the you had mentioned to me, you said,
- 1:31Speaker 2: home performance is either all right or it's all wrong.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Explain that that and and why it's one of those
- 1:38Speaker 2: important areas, especially this time of year.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Well, that that is a model that we have with
- 1:42Speaker 1: our with our production text. And it's not I mean,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it's not really a model. It's a truth, but it's
- 1:48Speaker 1: something we talk about. It's one hundred percent right or
- 1:50Speaker 1: it's one hundred percent wrong. And that's that's my sales
- 1:53Speaker 1: guys understand that, and our staff understands that because when
- 1:57Speaker 1: it comes to home performance work and everybody listens, home
- 2:01Speaker 1: performance work to me is the way your home is heated,
- 2:05Speaker 1: it's cooled, how it holds energy, how it breathes. All
- 2:08Speaker 1: of that. It's home performance. How does your home perform?
- 2:11Speaker 1: And it's a one hundred percent right, it's a hundred
- 2:14Speaker 1: percent wrong. Like, if we don't do everything one hundred
- 2:16Speaker 1: percent right, we can actually make things worse. And here's
- 2:19Speaker 1: the thing. We're not perfect. We're learning. We've made mistakes.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I mean, we've made costly mistakes, like pocketbook wise, where
- 2:30Speaker 1: we've done something we thought was right, missed a little
- 2:32Speaker 1: something and exacerbated a problem and created a bigger problem
- 2:37Speaker 1: and ended up having to go back to houses and
- 2:39Speaker 1: remove and redo everything. But that's something we'll do. But
- 2:43Speaker 1: I have a specific I have a specific story about
- 2:46Speaker 1: one hundred percent right or one hundred percent wrong. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: this one has to do with vaulted ceilings. A lot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of people have usually might have a room in their
- 2:56Speaker 1: home that has a vaulted ceiling. It looks cool, it
- 2:59Speaker 1: makes a room feel big, and you know, it gives
- 3:03Speaker 1: height to the room, so it happens a lot in
- 3:05Speaker 1: a great room or something like that. Well, they're hard
- 3:08Speaker 1: to insulate, you know. For one thing, on a regular ceiling,
- 3:11Speaker 1: we've got an attic space that we can get into
- 3:13Speaker 1: and we can properly air seal and insulate. You know,
- 3:16Speaker 1: we can get our seventeen eighteen inches of insulation in there,
- 3:20Speaker 1: get us an R sixty. We can air seal it
- 3:22Speaker 1: on a vaulted ceiling. Unless it's new construction, it's typically
- 3:27Speaker 1: never done right. And even if it's new construction, it
- 3:30Speaker 1: might not be done right. But usually what's done is
- 3:35Speaker 1: you put your you know, you put your your rafters
- 3:37Speaker 1: up there. You and you basically throw some fiberglass rolled
- 3:43Speaker 1: pink stuff up there, and it's not very efficient. Those
- 3:47Speaker 1: rooms can usually be cold and drafty, and so a
- 3:49Speaker 1: lot of people are We have a lot of people
- 3:51Speaker 1: that call us that are looking for better ways to
- 3:53Speaker 1: insulate that well. One of the ways that you can
- 3:55Speaker 1: insulate it is dense packing. And dense packing is just
- 3:58Speaker 1: what it sounds. You are dense sleep packing cellulose insulation.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And when you do that properly, it has a good
- 4:06Speaker 1: our value. And our value is a measure of the
- 4:09Speaker 1: rate of energy escape, so it's got a good our value.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Our value of a wall, if it's two by six
- 4:15Speaker 1: wall is about nineteen not amazing when we can get
- 4:18Speaker 1: an R sixty in our attic, But getting our sixty
- 4:21Speaker 1: in our attic is much more important because heat rises,
- 4:25Speaker 1: so we candense pack it well. One of the ways
- 4:29Speaker 1: that contractors will do that is they will actually take
- 4:32Speaker 1: the ridge vent or the ridge cap off a roof
- 4:35Speaker 1: if there is one. If there's not, they will create one,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and they will actually dense pack from the top of roof.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Sounds straightforward, I mean to me some people I think
- 4:44Speaker 1: that sounds really complicated, But it's pretty straightforward. But here's
- 4:48Speaker 1: the problem. Ninety nine point nine percent of the time,
- 4:51Speaker 1: there's already insulation in those cavities. So when you dense
- 4:55Speaker 1: pack and you stick this long, hard tube down these
- 4:58Speaker 1: roof slopes, you're essentially can be pushing the fiberglass insulation
- 5:03Speaker 1: that's in there down, And because you can't see what
- 5:07Speaker 1: you're doing, you are doing this blindly. All you can
- 5:10Speaker 1: do is measure the length of that slope and hope
- 5:13Speaker 1: that you can get that tube down there the same
- 5:15Speaker 1: so you're covering the whole area. But I know from
- 5:18Speaker 1: experience that it is almost impossible because you push the
- 5:23Speaker 1: other insulation that's in there down, and what you can
- 5:25Speaker 1: end up doing is actually creating voids. So there might
- 5:29Speaker 1: be now voids and that roof slope that have no
- 5:32Speaker 1: insulation in them. Which now we've got certain areas that do,
- 5:37Speaker 1: certain areas that are dense packed, and certain areas that
- 5:39Speaker 1: might have little spaces, little holes, little voids of insulation.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So now what we did is we took it from
- 5:48Speaker 1: basically one hundred percent right before it was just under insulated,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but it was still right to completely wrong. And one
- 5:56Speaker 1: of my reps ran a lead last year, and that's
- 5:58Speaker 1: what these people wanted done. Wanted they wanted their vaulted
- 6:02Speaker 1: ceiling dense pack and he knew we will not do
- 6:09Speaker 1: that because we've been there before and I know what
- 6:13Speaker 1: can happen. Well told the whole owner that we will
- 6:18Speaker 1: not do that, even though the whole owner says, well,
- 6:20Speaker 1: we've talked to two other companies and they will do it,
- 6:23Speaker 1: but we know that you guys are the best and
- 6:25Speaker 1: we want to work with you, and we were just
- 6:28Speaker 1: sorry adamant not doing it. The only way to do
- 6:33Speaker 1: it properly is to actually tear the shingles off, tear
- 6:38Speaker 1: the deck boards off, and spray foe it from the outside.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Now we know that we do not have any voids.
- 6:47Speaker 1: It is one hundred percent right because now we not
- 6:49Speaker 1: only have we given it a great our value with
- 6:52Speaker 1: spray poone, we've actually air sealed now too, because air
- 6:55Speaker 1: can't go through spray phone close sell spray phone. So anyway,
- 7:00Speaker 1: apparently they went with somebody else and they got it
- 7:02Speaker 1: dense packed, and we got a call yesterday that they
- 7:07Speaker 1: have wet spots at the ends where their wall meets
- 7:13Speaker 1: their ceiling. Well, what has happened is we sent someone
- 7:17Speaker 1: out there right away, even though we didn't do the work.
- 7:19Speaker 1: We sent someone out there right away. They were able
- 7:22Speaker 1: to crawl their way up into an attic space that
- 7:25Speaker 1: was adjacent to this vaulted ceiling area and see in
- 7:28Speaker 1: there and there were voids, there were multiple voids, and
- 7:32Speaker 1: they were soaking wet, stripping wet because now there's no insulation.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So what we have is we've got super cold deck
- 7:41Speaker 1: board and so now that warm air is able to
- 7:43Speaker 1: rise up hit the sheet rock, it can then go
- 7:46Speaker 1: through the sheet rock or it's getting through there from
- 7:48Speaker 1: holes or air gaps, and it's condensating on that roof. Well,
- 7:52Speaker 1: because it's dense packed in certain areas, no airflow can
- 7:55Speaker 1: get through there, so we can't even use the air
- 7:58Speaker 1: or the ventilation to carry them moist sure out. Now
- 8:01Speaker 1: we've got and this was one year ago almost to
- 8:04Speaker 1: the day. Now they've got wet, dripping, moldy wood. Now
- 8:09Speaker 1: We're going to give them an estimate to go back,
- 8:12Speaker 1: tear the shingles off, tear the deck boards off, get
- 8:15Speaker 1: rid of all that wet nastiness, spray film it, put
- 8:23Speaker 1: the roof deck back on, put new shingles on. So
- 8:27Speaker 1: again it's all right or it's all wrong. And now unfortunately,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and I feel bad for them because I mean, I
- 8:35Speaker 1: don't know how much was spent to dense pack, but
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm sure it was, you know, three four or five
- 8:40Speaker 1: thousand dollars. It's a lot of work. So again, all
- 8:45Speaker 1: right or all wrong. And in this case it was
- 8:46Speaker 1: done with probably with good conscience and best intentions. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: I know from experience that it's almost an impossible task
- 8:54Speaker 1: to do. That's why we just stay away from it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And if doing it the right way is too expensive,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I can't help you. We will only do it the
- 9:02Speaker 1: right way because we need to sleep at night knowing
- 9:04Speaker 1: that we did it right.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And that's one of the things I think for a
- 9:06Speaker 2: homeowner you can really appreciate. I can speak to that
- 9:08Speaker 2: personally as well. You guys have done work on our home,
- 9:11Speaker 2: and you talk about all right or all wrong, the
- 9:14Speaker 2: attention to detail and making sure that every piece, every part,
- 9:18Speaker 2: everything is done right. It's pretty phenomenal. And you mentioned
- 9:22Speaker 2: the scenario of somebody who actually decided to try and
- 9:24Speaker 2: save a couple of bucks. Well, you're not saving any
- 9:27Speaker 2: money having to do it twice. As a matter of fact,
- 9:29Speaker 2: you're costing yourself a whole lot more money and wasted
- 9:32Speaker 2: time and damage and other issues. That's why we talk
- 9:35Speaker 2: about with Andrew about the work that they do. And

- 10:55Speaker 2: maybe maybe heading down that wrong road may have a
- 10:59Speaker 2: chance to write it before it becomes a problem. So
- 11:01Speaker 2: I really enjoy hearing this stuff. And again that's a
- 11:04Speaker 2: great thing too with Andrew talk about the pride in
