- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:05Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No Dribble.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Don't tell them all right, Hello, and welcome to No Dribble.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We are in episode six. If this if these episodes
- 0:27Speaker 2: were children.
- 0:28Speaker 3: We would need a bigger car for them.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Now.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I am comedian and writer Carolyn Swindell, and I am
- 0:33Speaker 2: joined as always by Cap Cox and Liz Alis, two
- 0:38Speaker 2: women who are closer than a swift lightning scoreboard.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Hey, well, welcome.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Back, guys. Thank you. So we're a key of Carnival.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Now, no, we're too big for a k Carnival. This
- 0:47Speaker 2: is our sixth child. You can only have five children
- 0:49Speaker 2: if you just don't. If you're a single parent, I
- 0:51Speaker 2: guess you could do a care Carnival.
- 0:53Speaker 5: I was going to say, what if you're a single parent,
- 0:54Speaker 5: you're okay.
- 0:55Speaker 2: If you are a single parent and you have six children,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you are not okay.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And help.
- 1:00Speaker 2: That is the hardest thing I can imagine in the world.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Has anyone done anything interesting? Let's not just confine it
- 1:09Speaker 2: to this week, but maybe in the last two.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Weeks, Elizabeth, we forgot to talk about a moment last
- 1:16Speaker 1: week because we were too busy talking about our bathroom running.
- 1:19Speaker 2: There were too busy talking a matkrla in the toilet queue,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and we forgot that you had an exciting meeting.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Well, I did have a bit of a couple of
- 1:26Speaker 4: exciting meetings. I trek down to Canberra, to the nation's capital,
- 1:29Speaker 4: and I put on my best red suit to make
- 1:31Speaker 4: sure I stood out, and I sat with some of
- 1:34Speaker 4: our politicians. We actually you go to Parliament House and
- 1:38Speaker 4: I got the heads up to weak comfortable shoes.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Parliament House is massive.
- 1:42Speaker 3: That red suit was spectacular.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It was so good.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Anyway, I do feel pretty good in red. And so
- 1:49Speaker 4: our last meeting of the day was with Albow.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And should we just explain for our international listeners. Albow is,
- 1:56Speaker 2: of course the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Alban of.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Australia, right, yes, And like I knew we were going
- 2:02Speaker 4: to meet with his offers, but I just assumed he
- 2:04Speaker 4: would be too busy. And then to walk in and
- 2:07Speaker 4: to see him standing there and he had a heap
- 2:10Speaker 4: of female MPs who love netball.
- 2:13Speaker 5: You know Joe Ryan, she's one of.
- 2:15Speaker 4: The whips in the Labor Party and she's such a
- 2:17Speaker 4: massive netball fan and such a supporter. So her Annika Wells,
- 2:21Speaker 4: who's the Minister for Sport, a few other female MPs
- 2:24Speaker 4: and they all had their diamonds scarves on and they
- 2:26Speaker 4: all were throwing netballs around and it was so cool
- 2:29Speaker 4: and it was like, you know, six or seven months ago,
- 2:32Speaker 4: our sport lost seventeen million dollars or the government took
- 2:35Speaker 4: seventeen million dollars away because they couldn't see the sports wish.
- 2:38Speaker 4: You couldn't see how we're going to spend it. So
- 2:40Speaker 4: you know, for someone like for Stacy West, who's our CEO,
- 2:43Speaker 4: she's gone in and done an enormous amount of work
- 2:45Speaker 4: to repair relationships, to build trust, to build confidence. And
- 2:49Speaker 4: so we met all the politicians and we had lots
- 2:52Speaker 4: of really constructive conversations and what was really clear was
- 2:55Speaker 4: that there was a huge amount of support for the
- 2:58Speaker 4: sport of netball. The staffers love netball and wanted to
- 3:01Speaker 4: talk to me about all the players and who their
- 3:03Speaker 4: favorites were and who their favorites team were. So the
- 3:05Speaker 4: sport is really loved and it's got back to a
- 3:08Speaker 4: position where it's trusted, you.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Know, it's announced last Friday that the government is.
- 3:13Speaker 4: In the Federal government is investing six million dollars into
- 3:15Speaker 4: the World Cup, into the up in Sydney in twenty
- 3:18Speaker 4: twenty seven.
- 3:19Speaker 5: And that's really important investment, right.
- 3:20Speaker 4: It allows us to build a team who would deliver
- 3:23Speaker 4: that World Cup and to deliver a number of really
- 3:25Speaker 4: crucial parts of it. And one of the really important
- 3:27Speaker 4: parts of it is just the storytelling of the first
- 3:29Speaker 4: nation's involvement in netball, and you know there's going to
- 3:34Speaker 4: be a large amount of work done around that to
- 3:36Speaker 4: deliver at the World Cup. So yeah, but it was
- 3:39Speaker 4: good fun to go down and just meet with politicians who,
- 3:42Speaker 4: you know, they didn't want a bratest, they didn't want
- 3:44Speaker 4: to yell at us. They just wanted to hear about
- 3:46Speaker 4: what our plans were and what netball wants to do
- 3:49Speaker 4: over the sort of short term, median term, long term
- 3:51Speaker 4: and then you know, what's the investment into the sport.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Look like Pard, my French, but you don't fuck around here.
- 3:57Speaker 1: You've been in the chair for how long? Sorry, Carla
- 4:00Speaker 1: turtleback from Parliament House with a ward of cash.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Well, no, it wasn't me.
- 4:05Speaker 4: It's the work that Stacey and her team have done,
- 4:08Speaker 4: so you know, I just get to sort of bask
- 4:09Speaker 4: in the glory. But this is something that's been going
- 4:11Speaker 4: on for a number of months. Optics it looks like none,
- 4:16Speaker 4: but it does look like I've turned up, been chair
- 4:18Speaker 4: for twenty minutes and got a six million bucks.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That is not a bit of a hair flick. And
- 4:22Speaker 3: he walked out with the cash.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Here I have sparkle some netball joy around, but yeah,
- 4:27Speaker 4: it's good. It was really great to be down there
- 4:29Speaker 4: and just talking, like just talking up our sport, right,
- 4:32Speaker 4: and that's something that I'm so desperate to do as
- 4:34Speaker 4: the chair of Netball Australia is just to keep talking
- 4:37Speaker 4: up our sport to anyone who you.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Want to see a scared man though. You have a
- 4:41Speaker 1: look at the photo of Albow when he's got Liz
- 4:43Speaker 1: Ellis on one side, Stacy West on the other side
- 4:45Speaker 1: and Ali Tucker next to I think you, Liz. They're
- 4:48Speaker 1: three defenders that have all played for New South Wales
- 4:52Speaker 1: or their states or Australia and he's stuck in the
- 4:55Speaker 1: middle of them. But then I then I see on
- 4:57Speaker 1: socials you broke free and had a selfie, You had
- 5:00Speaker 1: your moment.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I did, well, I said to him, I handed someone
- 5:03Speaker 4: who was there my phone and said, can you please
- 5:05Speaker 4: take a photo of me with the Prime Minister because
- 5:07Speaker 4: I wanted to impress my daughter, Like that's all about
- 5:10Speaker 4: impressing you kings totally and I know, right, and so
- 5:14Speaker 4: he goes, no, no, let's do a selfie.
- 5:15Speaker 5: So he grabbed my phone and took the selfie. So
- 5:17Speaker 5: that was very cool.
- 5:18Speaker 4: And she rolled her eyes as all teenagers do with
- 5:21Speaker 4: their mother. So because you know, the older they get,
- 5:23Speaker 4: the less impressed they get.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I know.
- 5:25Speaker 2: In twenty ten, I took a job because it would
- 5:28Speaker 2: enable me to work specifically with Paul Keating, who was
- 5:30Speaker 2: an advisor on this big project that I was working on.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And the very first email I sent to him, I
- 5:34Speaker 2: asked him if he would like to please appear at
- 5:36Speaker 2: a pubic meeting. Oh, how good, because you know I
- 5:42Speaker 2: wanted to impress him.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Now here we go. Here's a little tip.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Spell check won't pick it up if you write pubic
- 5:48Speaker 2: instead of public because it's a legitimate word.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You know who does pick that up right away? Paul Keating.
- 5:54Speaker 3: He picks that up immediately when you write pubic in
- 5:57Speaker 3: an email.
- 5:58Speaker 4: What did.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I just mentioned that I might want to spell check
- 6:01Speaker 3: my email.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I'm like what, what what? And it's like, oh dying?
- 6:07Speaker 5: Did he turn up?
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was a great event.
- 6:15Speaker 5: The biggest celebrity that Catherine and I have met would
- 6:17Speaker 5: have to be Dave Grohl.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Surely now, I was just telling old mate here that
- 6:21Speaker 1: story yesterday. I had to pull the photo out to
- 6:23Speaker 1: prove it those so I had to actually scroll through
- 6:26Speaker 1: your Facebook page to find it because I knew it
- 6:28Speaker 1: was on yours somewhere.
- 6:30Speaker 5: It's there. Well, I just posted every time the Food
- 6:32Speaker 5: Fighters tour.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Nice, nice, nice, So we'll tell you this story. So
- 6:35Speaker 1: whenever they were here touring years ago, we were both
- 6:39Speaker 1: still playing and his support artist was a lady named
- 6:42Speaker 1: Kaki King, and she got to Australia. She was an
- 6:46Speaker 1: American got to Australia and she was watching the netball
- 6:48Speaker 1: on the television and apparently it was just like, who
- 6:51Speaker 1: are these Amazon women? I must meet them immediately? What
- 6:55Speaker 1: is this sport? Wanted to know all about it. So
- 6:58Speaker 1: her team got in touch with the new South Wales
- 7:00Speaker 1: Lifts and next minute we were all invited to watch
- 7:02Speaker 1: her show. And so after she performed, which she did
- 7:05Speaker 1: on stage at Kudos Bank Arena with a Swift's top one.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Then she comes and finds us in the crowd and
- 7:11Speaker 1: gives us all backstage pass. So we tootle down to
- 7:14Speaker 1: our change room because it was where we played Yes,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and then Dave Grohl just wanders on in after they've
- 7:22Speaker 1: done their set, and we had a good chat with him.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Didn't We told him that he was in our change room.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Yeah, well he walked in. He goes, ah, the net
- 7:29Speaker 5: polers Dave Grol. It was amazing.
- 7:35Speaker 4: It was so so random, right, we just turned up
- 7:37Speaker 4: and then next minute, so you know, I got home
- 7:39Speaker 4: that night and I said to my husband, I met
- 7:41Speaker 4: Dave Grohl.
- 7:41Speaker 5: He's like, Dave is stupid. Back he goes off to sleep.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Unfortunately we had the funeo to prove it. So it
- 7:46Speaker 5: was pretty amazing.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And I remember he was drinking a canon of saki
- 7:51Speaker 4: and I said, isn't he Are you supposed to drink
- 7:53Speaker 4: that warm? And he goes, yeah, you pop this button
- 7:55Speaker 4: and it warms it up somehow. And I'm like, oh
- 7:57Speaker 4: my god, you're so fancy drinking self warming psak. He goes, dude,
- 8:00Speaker 4: I've got my own legit I was like.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Oh, it's quite a flex, isn't it.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I've got my own lay back in your box, Back.
- 8:09Speaker 4: In your box netblork girl, who's just you know, because
- 8:11Speaker 4: I've given him some lip about.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Being in our chain rooms. Oh dear, that was a
- 8:16Speaker 5: funny night.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Well, a lot of the big names I work with
- 8:21Speaker 2: now comedians. But there's two comedians I want to talk
- 8:23Speaker 2: to you guys about who have a podcast called Screen Queens,
- 8:26Speaker 2: Beck Charlwood and Alex j.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Very funny.
- 8:28Speaker 2: They look at movies particularly and it is a great laugh.
- 8:33Speaker 2: But they had a segment recently that I found very
- 8:36Speaker 2: interesting because they went into their own netball histories and Liz,
- 8:40Speaker 2: I want you as a defender to critique this technique
- 8:44Speaker 2: that Beck used on court. It I think signaled perhaps
- 8:47Speaker 2: the end of her netball career.
- 8:49Speaker 6: I got kicked off a netball team for being too
- 8:53Speaker 6: aggressive on thels.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Oh not even that.
- 8:58Speaker 6: What I would do is because I was such a
- 9:00Speaker 6: bad player.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I was so bad at sport.
- 9:02Speaker 6: This is so psycho.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I would like.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Stand it from them, arms out and they'd be like
- 9:09Speaker 6: ah ah ah, just like scream at other twelve year
- 9:17Speaker 6: old girls.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Is psyching about?
- 9:20Speaker 6: Say the bipolar was written on the wall so long ago, Like,
- 9:23Speaker 6: I don't know how I didn't get diagnosed till I
- 9:25Speaker 6: was twenty four. That's I should have just had a
- 9:28Speaker 6: psychologist overseeing the netball courts and be like adhd by Pola.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I think a hand of diagnosis could happen when watching
- 9:35Speaker 2: a teenage netball game. So, yeah, Liza, I thought that
- 9:39Speaker 2: Beck had a very interesting defensive strategy there, and I'm
- 9:42Speaker 2: wondering whether you would recommend it as something at what
- 9:44Speaker 2: age group you would recommend this strategy as.
- 9:47Speaker 3: An ongo No, Okay, that's a no.
- 9:49Speaker 4: No technic, isn't It would probably work right because the
- 9:55Speaker 4: person with the ball would be like, whoa, what's going on?
- 9:59Speaker 4: But then after a while, like it's the law of
- 10:01Speaker 4: diminishing returns, isn't it? And then suddenly you're just sating.
- 10:03Speaker 4: They're screaming while the opposition's sort of doing their bit
- 10:06Speaker 4: around you. So look, I appreciate the enthusiasm, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 4: being a scary defender, but I would say that's probably
- 10:12Speaker 4: one that's left in the past.
- 10:15Speaker 1: There is no other kind of defender than a scary one.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But you did that to me a few times at
- 10:19Speaker 1: Aussie training, Like when I had my arms up to shoot,
- 10:21Speaker 1: she'd come in to tickle me. That worked every time,
- 10:25Speaker 1: because I hate be tickled. I might have wet my
- 10:27Speaker 1: pants instead of missing the shot. Either way, it would
- 10:32Speaker 1: have heard the right effect.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I do know someone who played at reasonably high level
- 10:36Speaker 4: who when she was younger, was playing in a game
- 10:39Speaker 4: and she put like a clean tampon in her hand,
- 10:42Speaker 4: and then when she opened it up to differend like
- 10:44Speaker 4: put a hand out, there was a tampon sort of
- 10:46Speaker 4: dangling off her finger.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Well, and she got in massive trouble for it. So
- 10:52Speaker 5: I would not advise.
- 10:53Speaker 1: That either defenders are messed up more than I knew.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Because I was wondering whether they knew a whole lot
- 10:59Speaker 2: about the game. If you ever listened to the next
- 11:01Speaker 2: thing that Beck and Alex talked.
- 11:02Speaker 6: About the center perfectionist people, please.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Wing attack, come on, get off it.
- 11:10Speaker 6: Out of it, GD, what is it?
- 11:13Speaker 5: Always?
- 11:14Speaker 6: Gold defense is gold defense and goal shooter goal shooter
- 11:17Speaker 6: gold defense is always the tallest girl. So I think
- 11:19Speaker 6: there will be a lot of insecurity issues there a.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Big time of being the tallest. He has everyone that's
- 11:25Speaker 3: all the game, that's not even a team. Girls that's like,
- 11:28Speaker 3: what did they say?
- 11:29Speaker 2: Four positions and they had center wing attack, come on,
- 11:32Speaker 2: gold defense and goal shooter.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Do you know what's fascinating about that?
- 11:39Speaker 3: I could have seen.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Haydrid Bler's time for us to have a bit of
- 11:45Speaker 2: a netball chat now. Obviously, the big elephant in the
- 11:48Speaker 2: room is what's going on at the Swifts at the moment.
- 11:50Speaker 2: We're seeing all the chat on the Facebook group. Obviously
- 11:53Speaker 2: we all want to know what's going on there. We're
- 11:55Speaker 2: not going to go too much into that today because
- 11:57Speaker 2: it's not confirmed and we just want to be respectful
- 12:00Speaker 2: and clearly it's something big and so we don't need
- 12:02Speaker 2: to be speculating. We could just wait, be patient. I'm
- 12:06Speaker 2: sure the club will tell us as soon as they
- 12:07Speaker 2: possibly can. Just hope everyone's okay. So anyway, let's talk
- 12:11Speaker 2: about other netball things. Can I just talk about Mazie
- 12:17Speaker 2: Nankevell playing with She broke her nose last week and
- 12:20Speaker 2: she played. She had some awesome head gear on. It
- 12:23Speaker 2: was strapped, but it's like, that is hardcore. She did
- 12:26Speaker 2: not want to miss this game. It was an important
- 12:28Speaker 2: game and our hats off to that.
- 12:29Speaker 3: That is tough.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Do you know, I just looked at that and thought, ah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: when she takes that off, the strapping. Every time you
- 12:36Speaker 1: take strapping off, it kills. But it's going to rip
- 12:37Speaker 1: her skin off her face. It's going to pull her
- 12:39Speaker 1: hair out. In the meantime, though she looked tough.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yeah she did. You played with a broken nose.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I did, but I had surgery booked in because it
- 12:46Speaker 1: was a semi final that we had, so I had
- 12:49Speaker 1: surgery booked in as soon as we either won the
- 12:51Speaker 1: whole thing or we got kicked out of the final.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So I just kept playing because I thought, if they
- 12:55Speaker 1: stuff it up, well I'm going in to get it
- 12:56Speaker 1: fixed anyway.
- 12:57Speaker 4: H Do you think you know when Mazie pulls up
- 13:00Speaker 4: the tape, it's like it's a good poor treatment for
- 13:02Speaker 4: your skin.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's just what.
- 13:07Speaker 1: If it was that easy?
- 13:08Speaker 3: Every cloud has a silver lining.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Hey, Liz, that's right.
- 13:12Speaker 4: It's not something that I have ever tried strapping up
- 13:15Speaker 4: my face, but maybe I should have.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I didn't see any black eyes or anything, though it
- 13:18Speaker 1: must have been a fairly clean and tidy break. Mine
- 13:21Speaker 1: was black eyes and it was horrendous. Actually, you were
- 13:25Speaker 1: commentating at the time when I did it, and you said,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I remember she's a single girl. She can't afford to
- 13:30Speaker 1: look like that. In commentary, what.
- 13:34Speaker 5: A professional.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Liz.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I was listening to last week's conversation and when Kat's
- 13:41Speaker 2: was when you were telling us about your knee and
- 13:42Speaker 2: Kat said the worst thing was with Liz's knee injury
- 13:45Speaker 2: was that I knew before she did.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And it's like, I don't think Liz would agree.
- 13:49Speaker 2: That that was the worst thing about her knee injury.
- 13:54Speaker 5: That's what friends are.
- 13:55Speaker 4: All, So take your pain and put it into perspective
- 13:58Speaker 4: with airpain.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Can we let's talk about their Diamond squad? Though? What
- 14:01Speaker 1: were you going to say, then, miss Elizabeth?
- 14:03Speaker 5: Can we talk about the Diamond squad?
- 14:05Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:06Speaker 1: And you know why we need to talk about it.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Did you see one of the newest on the list?
- 14:10Speaker 5: Oh I know someone's mother in that squad.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Shelley O'donald.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Shelley o'donald. Right.
- 14:15Speaker 4: I was really excited about that because Shelley was a
- 14:18Speaker 4: great mid court player, as is Hannah. Hannah Monday and
- 14:21Speaker 4: she comes in but they, you know, imagine what it
- 14:24Speaker 4: would be like to have your daughter, you know, after
- 14:26Speaker 4: being such a superstar for Australia, like Shelley was.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Yeah, she was in the World Cup winning.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Team in nine ninety one, nine to ninety five, in
- 14:34Speaker 4: ninety nine, and there she's with her daughter now coming
- 14:37Speaker 4: into the Australian squad and potentially there's a World Cup
- 14:40Speaker 4: in twenty twenty seven.
- 14:41Speaker 5: So I was really I was just I don't know.
- 14:43Speaker 5: It just makes me excited to see that.
- 14:44Speaker 1: There's lots of Adelaide potential as well. I saw an
- 14:48Speaker 1: interview recently that had Sarah Sutter and her daughter. She's
- 14:51Speaker 1: just made the nineteens Australian junior squad, as has Peter
- 14:54Speaker 1: Sholes's daughter used to be Peter Squire, both who played
- 14:57Speaker 1: for Australia, and their daughters are coming through the rain
- 15:00Speaker 1: as well. So it's pretty cool. But the other thing
- 15:03Speaker 1: from Adelaide that we need to point out Georgie Hodge.
- 15:08Speaker 5: There you go. That was exciting.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Now are you going to take credit for this because
- 15:11Speaker 4: you had dinner with her and her family?
- 15:13Speaker 5: What two weeks ago?
- 15:14Speaker 2: She didn't have dinner with Georgie. Georgie was nowhere to
- 15:16Speaker 2: be seen. The family was there, Georgie didn't make eye
- 15:19Speaker 2: contact with Cat.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I winked it from across the room. Do you know
- 15:23Speaker 1: what's interesting about this? So we had and Sergeant on
- 15:26Speaker 1: Pivot on Fox Netball on the weekend and she was
- 15:29Speaker 1: talking about the Australian squad as she's a Naussi selector
- 15:33Speaker 1: and they had the team up and it's in sixes.
- 15:35Speaker 1: So the six goal is six mid court, six defenders.
- 15:38Speaker 1: There's your beautiful round number. Georgie Horges is listed as
- 15:41Speaker 1: a shooter. Oh so they've picked her there. It is
- 15:44Speaker 1: the time. You know, there's always periods of whatever the
- 15:48Speaker 1: year is that it's a good time to be a
- 15:50Speaker 1: goal defense because there's not that many, or it's a
- 15:51Speaker 1: great time to be a goal shooter because there's not
- 15:53Speaker 1: that many. It is a great time to be a
- 15:55Speaker 1: goal attack in the Australian squad if you think about it,
- 15:59Speaker 1: because you're well, Kira Austin is probably the only one
- 16:03Speaker 1: that's really informed Sophie Dwyer and then what so that's
- 16:08Speaker 1: why they put Georgie Harges in goals, which I find
- 16:10Speaker 1: really fascinating.
- 16:11Speaker 5: Well, she's like the replacement for Sep fretwell, isn't she.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, But then otherwise there's no other goal
- 16:17Speaker 1: attacks that aren't really rookies that are playing in the
- 16:20Speaker 1: competition at the moment.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Isn't that funny?
- 16:22Speaker 4: Like you're so right, Like I think back to my
- 16:24Speaker 4: career when I came through, Like the mid court didn't
- 16:27Speaker 4: have a huge amount of depth early on in my career.
- 16:29Speaker 5: And then you know, then you go through you're so right.
- 16:32Speaker 5: You go through periods and.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Everyone is tearing their hair out, Oh we've got no
- 16:35Speaker 4: goal shooters, or oh we've got no but it's sort
- 16:37Speaker 4: of all balances up in the end. As long as
- 16:39Speaker 4: you know some world class people in a few key positions,
- 16:42Speaker 4: you're okay. And then you know everyone sort of they
- 16:45Speaker 4: raised the boat and you just get these lumps of
- 16:48Speaker 4: all this great talent that comes through. So where's the
- 16:50Speaker 4: lump at the moment, Catherine? Is it in the mid court?
- 16:52Speaker 1: It's in the mid court for sure, absolutely, And probably
- 16:56Speaker 1: the defense end. There's lots of great defenders in there
- 16:58Speaker 1: that are really versatile as well, so they can be
- 17:01Speaker 1: picked across wing defense, goal defense, goalkeeper. I mean, Joe
- 17:04Speaker 1: Western's playing a lot at wing defense at the moment.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Without Zara Walters in there, They've all just had to
- 17:09Speaker 1: shuffle back a position for the for the Melbourne Vixen's
- 17:12Speaker 1: but she's still in a great job. Imagine that sort
- 17:14Speaker 1: of height out on wing defense.
- 17:15Speaker 3: It's crazy, And how tells Joe Weston Joe's.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Probably my heart or a smidge taller as well, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: she's out playing wing Defense's.
- 17:21Speaker 3: So off, leave something for the short girls.
- 17:23Speaker 1: For god?
- 17:25Speaker 3: What do we meant to do?
- 17:27Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:29Speaker 2: What I think is fabulous though, of yes, thank you
- 17:32Speaker 2: of the nineteen and the Diamond Squad. All of the
- 17:34Speaker 2: Suncorp Super Netball teams have represented there. I mean some
- 17:37Speaker 2: have only got one, sure and Vixen's have got five
- 17:40Speaker 2: plus one invit but it's like they're all represented, and
- 17:42Speaker 2: I think that's great.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I think it. That's why the competition's so good, isn't it.
- 17:46Speaker 1: What about m Mannix not making the actual squad though,
- 17:49Speaker 1: is she's an invite? What do you make of that?
- 17:51Speaker 3: What does that mean?
- 17:51Speaker 1: What does that mean? She's an invite so she will
- 17:54Speaker 1: still go to all of the squad trainings and everything else,
- 17:57Speaker 1: but she isn't in the squad. She can be elevated
- 18:01Speaker 1: into the squad if she has a great second half
- 18:03Speaker 1: of the season, but otherwise she's there as kind of
- 18:06Speaker 1: a training partner with the diner.
- 18:07Speaker 4: To be honest, being an invite it's a bit like
- 18:10Speaker 4: the difference between being an inviteam being in the squad
- 18:12Speaker 4: is administrative, right, because if the selectors look at you
- 18:15Speaker 4: and go, you've had a really good tournament and you've
- 18:17Speaker 4: come in and done well, then they can certainly look
- 18:20Speaker 4: at you to bring you into the Australian team. So
- 18:22Speaker 4: em Mannix has had a brilliant season and there's a
- 18:25Speaker 4: heap of defenders right, and she was in the team
- 18:28Speaker 4: and then she was out and she's fought a way back,
- 18:31Speaker 4: so I suspect they're just looking at her, going, oh,
- 18:33Speaker 4: there's a couple of good young players, but gee, we
- 18:35Speaker 4: like the idea of having someone as experienced as them.
- 18:38Speaker 4: And when a player makes the team and then falls
- 18:42Speaker 4: out of the team and comes back in, they come
- 18:43Speaker 4: back in with a much more experienced perspective. So I
- 18:45Speaker 4: think that'll be valuable, particularly as now they'll be looking
- 18:48Speaker 4: at players who are going to be there in twenty
- 18:50Speaker 4: twenty seven for the next World Cup. So you're going
- 18:52Speaker 4: to remember this is the start of a new cycle.
- 18:54Speaker 4: It's not just picking the best Australian team. The selectors
- 18:57Speaker 4: will have at least one eye on the World Cup.
- 19:00Speaker 4: And Stacy Marinkovich has been incredibly successful, So you've just
- 19:04Speaker 4: got to trust that she knows what she's doing and
- 19:05Speaker 4: she's got this process where she's going to going to
- 19:09Speaker 4: make sure she looks after the older players going into this,
- 19:11Speaker 4: but she's bringing some young talents through and we're seeing
- 19:14Speaker 4: that in who's in the squad. So for m Mannix,
- 19:17Speaker 4: it's probably just saying keep doing it, doing push a
- 19:20Speaker 4: little bit harder and we'll have a good look at you.
- 19:28Speaker 1: The bloody scrunchy has made a return. It means just
- 19:31Speaker 1: saying that are you serious? Would you wear a scrunchy.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you why you wear a scrunchy
- 19:36Speaker 2: from now on. So I have now this is self diagnosed.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Everyone from Google yesterday, off the press. Carolyn's got a
- 19:43Speaker 2: new condition, traction alopecia. So here at the I don't
- 19:47Speaker 2: know what's this party of forehead call.
- 19:48Speaker 3: You're like the square bit, which is the hair's starting
- 19:51Speaker 3: to march back.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Because I'm a crossfitter, so I'm at the gym five
- 19:53Speaker 2: days a week, which means my hair is in a
- 19:55Speaker 2: tight ponytail five days a week and the hair is
- 19:57Speaker 2: starting to fall out there, and if the follicle gets damage,
- 20:00Speaker 2: it never grows back. So now I have to look
- 20:02Speaker 2: for alternate hairstyles. Being the low soft pony, hence the scrunchy.
- 20:08Speaker 2: You do not want to be going bald at the
- 20:10Speaker 2: edges there.
- 20:10Speaker 1: But have they in this article said the scrunchy is
- 20:13Speaker 1: the good alternative? What do you mean?
- 20:14Speaker 2: Article said that the scrunchy is the alternative, But they
- 20:20Speaker 2: do say that you've got to go for looser hairstyles
- 20:24Speaker 2: that don't sort of traumatize the follicle quite so much.
- 20:27Speaker 2: So I'm hearing scrunchy.
- 20:29Speaker 1: No when it says in this whatever you're reading, scrunchy,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I will believe you.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Well, the medical journalist that I read don't use the
- 20:38Speaker 2: word scrunching anyway. Traction alopecia people be worn it.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Do you feel like you're getting like like is it all?
- 20:45Speaker 4: Is it going back uniformally or is it going back
- 20:47Speaker 4: like in it?
- 20:48Speaker 2: Which is so it's just the triangles just there at
- 20:51Speaker 2: the at the sort of where horns would be, and
- 20:55Speaker 2: you don't see it. And to someone takes a photo
- 20:56Speaker 2: of you with the paint it tar and you go,
- 20:58Speaker 2: what the hell is going on right there? So and
- 21:01Speaker 2: it's worse because I'm still look, here's a bit of
- 21:05Speaker 2: a secret. I'm dyeing my hair to stay brunette, but
- 21:08Speaker 2: so inevitably it's sort of grayer at the scalp, so
- 21:12Speaker 2: it's then it looks like quite a big patch of
- 21:15Speaker 2: blank sta.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I think you've uncovered something.
- 21:18Speaker 4: I would be very surprised if there's not a whole
- 21:21Speaker 4: raft of netballers out there with traction alopecia.
- 21:24Speaker 2: It happens a lot in ballet dancers because they've got
- 21:26Speaker 2: those type high performance hair.
- 21:29Speaker 1: We call that high performance hair. I love it. Do
- 21:33Speaker 1: you know? We came up with this during the World
- 21:35Speaker 1: Cup because one of the players who should know better
- 21:38Speaker 1: played two hundred caps for her country, ran out for
- 21:41Speaker 1: a big game with a very sloppy looking ponytail.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Oh that's not good.
- 21:45Speaker 1: But we got this whole conversation going about you know
- 21:47Speaker 1: that look good, feel good thing. I reckon it's very true,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you know, like we'd always put a bit of tan
- 21:52Speaker 1: on before a game because you just feel a bit better.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And we thought she's not going to play well. She
- 21:57Speaker 1: needs a Sarah Klow high pony. That's hype form its hair.
- 22:01Speaker 1: It's exactly what the Yes, you're right, they're going to
- 22:05Speaker 1: be baled when they're older.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Yes, doesn't have traction on the Patia doesn't have a
- 22:11Speaker 4: world cafe either.
- 22:11Speaker 5: But you know, well, I reckon.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I think that that makes it very clear to me
- 22:20Speaker 2: what we need to be doing. We need a no
- 22:21Speaker 2: dribble scrunchy, right, we need to get ponytails up in
- 22:25Speaker 2: no dribble scrunchies around this country.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I love it.
- 22:28Speaker 1: No how many times you guys, no, hold on.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Can we just workshop this? Runty Catherine, Elizabeth?
- 22:38Speaker 3: What is what?
- 22:39Speaker 5: I don't understand you why, sister.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Well, I just think they look dorky. I don't know
- 22:44Speaker 1: what it is. It's as bad as having a ribbon
- 22:47Speaker 1: in your hair. I've got so she's with ribbons in
- 22:49Speaker 1: hair a few over twelve years.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I will accept this as a what about Harley Rasso?
- 22:53Speaker 2: And though Matilda's though that's fantastic, she wears the ribbon
- 22:55Speaker 2: because their grandmother couldn't see who she was on the field.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I love it. I love that. That's I mean, that's
- 23:00Speaker 1: you make me feel really.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Bad, terribly sorry about that.
- 23:05Speaker 2: You might be a dog at a bone about one issue,
- 23:07Speaker 2: But I am a dog at a bone on the
- 23:09Speaker 2: scrunchy issue. There will be no dribble scrunches if it
- 23:12Speaker 2: is the last thing I do.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Well.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Yeah, so Catherine, you are in a minority in this group.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Are you even a netballer?
- 23:18Speaker 1: Look? Hey, I'm on board with your scrunches. I'm not
- 23:20Speaker 1: wearing one.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Are you even a netballer?
- 23:22Speaker 1: Did you hear that? Yeah?
- 23:24Speaker 6: No?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Did you notice how I just tuned out? I turned
- 23:27Speaker 1: on my dad's selective hearing when she said.
- 23:29Speaker 2: That, all right, we're going to park this issue now
- 23:32Speaker 2: before we start to turn it into fisticuffs here.
- 23:34Speaker 3: But can I just mention.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Some stuff that happened on the weekend the heart Senior
- 23:38Speaker 2: state netball titles here in New South Wales.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Giving a shout out to.
- 23:42Speaker 2: The winners of the All Abilities comp Curring Guy, but
- 23:45Speaker 2: the runners up were my home camp erner the Eastwood
- 23:48Speaker 2: Ride Netball Association. Can I give a little shout out
- 23:50Speaker 2: to a young woman who went to primary school with
- 23:53Speaker 2: my son, Mia Carroll, who played in that team and
- 23:56Speaker 2: played very valiantly from what I can hear. So congrats
- 23:58Speaker 2: to Curring guy and to Erna and everyone participated in
- 24:01Speaker 2: the state titles on the weekend massive three days.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Yes, my niece played.
- 24:05Speaker 4: My niece played for ballan Or in the state titles,
- 24:08Speaker 4: so it was great to see and it's a huge
- 24:11Speaker 4: three days. And you know those state titles, both the
- 24:13Speaker 4: opens and the junior state titles, they're sort of back now,
- 24:17Speaker 4: but remember they disappeared with COVID and then in New
- 24:20Speaker 4: South Wales they had like one year was washed out
- 24:23Speaker 4: the first year after COVID. So it's so nice to
- 24:25Speaker 4: see them all get great weather girl, the netballers, there.
- 24:28Speaker 5: The all abilities.
- 24:29Speaker 4: There was an all abilities section which was great and
- 24:31Speaker 4: there was also voices or a men's section which was
- 24:33Speaker 4: fantastic too. So I love to see netballe New South
- 24:36Speaker 4: Wales becoming super inclusive around these big events.
- 24:41Speaker 1: There'll be a lot of blisters and a lot of
- 24:42Speaker 1: tired people today. That is foresuer.
- 24:47Speaker 2: We like to do something every week which is to
- 24:49Speaker 2: recognize those people who keep our game alive at the
- 24:52Speaker 2: community level. This segment is called Win Beneath our Wings
- 24:55Speaker 2: and this is where you nominate the people who you
- 24:57Speaker 2: see around you keeping the game just moving. Know them
- 25:00Speaker 2: they are doing dozens of hours of work each week
- 25:03Speaker 2: that no one pays them for. They get very little thanksful,
- 25:06Speaker 2: but without them we just can't get bibs on each week.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Kath, do we have a nomination for dude? This has
- 25:11Speaker 1: come from T Jackson, So thank you to Tea, she says.
- 25:15Speaker 1: My shout o is to Willow Allen of United Stars
- 25:18Speaker 1: Netball Club, Pine Rivers Netball Association. She manages all the
- 25:22Speaker 1: teams of her three girls, including one with her daughter
- 25:26Speaker 1: and one that Tea coaches. This year she took on
- 25:30Speaker 1: a fourth team because she coached it and she knew
- 25:33Speaker 1: without her coaching or being a part of it, they
- 25:35Speaker 1: would have no bibs, no ball, and no idea which
- 25:38Speaker 1: court to go to. So what an Absolutely? Four teams?
- 25:42Speaker 1: That's a lot. That is a lot, what a legend?
- 25:44Speaker 1: Will I thank you?
- 25:45Speaker 5: Do you remember all the names? That's a lot of
- 25:47Speaker 5: Remember all the names teams?
- 25:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 25:51Speaker 5: Who's played?
- 25:51Speaker 1: Where?
- 25:52Speaker 5: I don't know? Didn't you play goal attack?
- 25:54Speaker 4: No?
- 25:54Speaker 5: Wrong team?
- 25:56Speaker 3: Well Willow Allen up at Pine Rivers.
- 25:58Speaker 1: You are the wind beneath our wings.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Thanks for everything you do for the game on a
- 26:01Speaker 2: weekly basis.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Hey, team, I've got an idea. Yeah that's what if?
- 26:06Speaker 4: What if we make no dribbles special no dribble scrunches
- 26:10Speaker 4: and we give them to our wind beneath our wings winners.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Yes, these are nice people. Yes, so are we doing that.
- 26:17Speaker 3: To themselves too?
- 26:20Speaker 1: We can hand crafty checking out of this relationship.
- 26:25Speaker 3: This is the gathering.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I was good at the cooking homeck the sewing.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Sewing anyway, but that's okay, Carolyn, can you so my
- 26:36Speaker 4: husband can.
- 26:37Speaker 3: So that's the same thing, isn't it.
- 26:42Speaker 2: This is more exciting than when Tim berners Lee invented
- 26:44Speaker 2: the World Wide Web. The no dribble scrunches with wind
- 26:46Speaker 2: beneath our wings. Fantastic decision made final come. Yeah, fabulous.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So that I think brings us to the end of
- 26:54Speaker 2: another fabulous episode, episode number six, Our half dozen, the
- 26:57Speaker 2: Dirty half Dozen. It's as always been an absolute pleasure.
- 27:02Speaker 2: And yeah, I don't know whether anyone's got any meetings
- 27:05Speaker 2: with prime ministers if this week, but if they do,
- 27:07Speaker 2: you know, go well keep yourself nice.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Do you know what we should do is given We've
- 27:11Speaker 1: now got a great Facebook page and a great Facebook community.
- 27:16Speaker 1: It is so fun talking to everybody, but also on
- 27:18Speaker 1: our social so also on an Instagram, which is no
- 27:20Speaker 1: Underscore Dribble Underscore podcast. How about people upload photos of
- 27:24Speaker 1: themselves with famous people, yes, somebody else, Yes, show us
- 27:27Speaker 1: who your most famous running is. And if it's Liz
- 27:31Speaker 1: Elis it doesn't.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Doesn't count, doesn't count. If it's Cath Cocks, don't.
- 27:35Speaker 2: And if it's one hundred and ninety centimeter wing defense,
- 27:37Speaker 2: keep that stuff to yourself too.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I'm not interested.
- 27:41Speaker 2: No, but you know, so many amazing to see so
- 27:43Speaker 2: many people introducing themselves. Barb from the Shamrocks seventy two
- 27:47Speaker 2: years old, still playing It's I love it.
- 27:48Speaker 3: It's so great.
- 27:49Speaker 2: So this is what we hoped would happen with our
- 27:52Speaker 2: Facebook group, is that people would start to really get
- 27:54Speaker 2: on there and get amongst it. So please tell everyone
- 27:57Speaker 2: about No Dribble podcasts, join our community. Fault photos. I'm
- 28:01Speaker 2: seeing very few photos of perms. People, come on what's happening?
- 28:05Speaker 2: We need to see those and photos with famous people,
- 28:07Speaker 2: and please give us some shout outs for wind Beneath
- 28:10Speaker 2: our Wings.
- 28:10Speaker 3: We want the voice notes.
- 28:11Speaker 2: If you can otherwise hit us up on Instagram or Facebook.
- 28:14Speaker 2: But that's the end of our time together and we
- 28:16Speaker 2: will be back in seven short days. So I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I'm cap Cots by team.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I'm lose ellasc yi guys, Bye Bye,
