- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are
- 0:22Speaker 1: the most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on X. I'll tell you what
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm cooking right now. If you want to know my
- 0:38Speaker 1: new um invention. Yes, it's you take the two legs
- 0:43Speaker 1: off a turkey, okay, thighs and drumsticks. You stick them
- 0:48Speaker 1: in a big old pot like a lock crusade dutch
- 0:52Speaker 1: op and type pot, and then uh, capping with water,
- 0:58Speaker 1: just covering with water. You know order this is going.
- 1:01Speaker 1: But then you put in a whole ton of garlic,
- 1:03Speaker 1: don't do anything to it, just peel it, any quartering onion,
- 1:07Speaker 1: put it a whole ton of hoistened sauce, bullion, salt, pepper,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and a whole ton of ginger. Oh, then putting your
- 1:19Speaker 1: oven at two seventy five all day long. And oh
- 1:26Speaker 1: you know the fact that I used to kind of
- 1:29Speaker 1: think that adding all kinds of junk to your braising
- 1:31Speaker 1: liquid didn't matter. It was stupid. I mean I used
- 1:34Speaker 1: to like put my pants and I was a little
- 1:36Speaker 1: kid too, Like people change over time, but uh, some
- 1:41Speaker 1: people that was indefensible position. You cannot make up for
- 1:48Speaker 1: it later. So how are you serving that stuff? Well,
- 1:52Speaker 1: the problem is you pulled out and you think you're
- 1:54Speaker 1: gonna make something with it, but you just eat it
- 1:55Speaker 1: all like that. That's all right, Yeah, I just eat
- 1:59Speaker 1: it all like that. The minute you can tear it
- 2:00Speaker 1: apart with a fork, I think you're going like street tacos.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Well that was the intention, or you put it on sandos,
- 2:07Speaker 1: make barbecue sandwiches and stuff like that. God's just good
- 2:10Speaker 1: like that tonight? I got it right now. I just
- 2:12Speaker 1: pulled out of my oven. What do I think about doing?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Is um just setting that whole thing down on the tabletop.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, just be like digging. Watch the bones so good.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I did the the old street taco last night with
- 2:31Speaker 1: turkey legs. Why were you on the street No kitchen taco,
- 2:36Speaker 1: kitchen taco, backyard taco. But you cook the legs, legs
- 2:43Speaker 1: and thighs pulled it. You know what else? I got
- 2:47Speaker 1: in there with my thing? What I haven't sampled you
- 2:49Speaker 1: as I threw a hunk of bear scrap in there,
- 2:52Speaker 1: just a scrap of bear meat, just to see just
- 2:57Speaker 1: when you made your tacos, would you put on them
- 3:00Speaker 1: as far as like fictions fixings, Yeah, some avocado, some um,
- 3:07Speaker 1: a little bit of lime, um, some onion, some taco sauce, um,
- 3:14Speaker 1: sour cream, not even real fancy. If you really want
- 3:18Speaker 1: to please your woman, Seth, what I would do is
- 3:24Speaker 1: pick the meat. Yeah okay, lightly tossed it with some
- 3:28Speaker 1: oil and kind of fluff it up so it looks
- 3:30Speaker 1: like a little bird's nest. Stick it under your broiler,
- 3:35Speaker 1: then put it on your taco. That's what I usually.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I didn't do it last night because it's been lazy,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but usually I payan fry it then. Oh yeah, um
- 3:42Speaker 1: the uh chew picabra seasoning, the green taco seasoning which
- 3:49Speaker 1: brought these kids thinks too spicy. That's right. Every kid
- 3:51Speaker 1: on the planet thinks that's too spicy. Mine, don't kids
- 3:55Speaker 1: have no problem with tough little kids. You get that
- 3:58Speaker 1: stuff into the air in the kitchen, it'll definitely put
- 4:01Speaker 1: you down. Um, but really, oh yeah, absolutely, just you're
- 4:08Speaker 1: just like inhaling it. Free floating particles can picture that, um,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I tossed elk shank and that stuff, threw it on
- 4:15Speaker 1: the grill, got it all looking nice, and then through
- 4:20Speaker 1: that and the suvie for like a long time, twelve
- 4:26Speaker 1: plus hours, and then pulled it out once. My My
- 4:31Speaker 1: test for a shank and the suvie is to try
- 4:34Speaker 1: to find where the tendon is coming out all clear.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And if you can poke that tendon and it just
- 4:40Speaker 1: kind of splits apart and forms around your finger, then
- 4:44Speaker 1: the elk shank's done. Now do you always grill pre suvie? Well,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you know, I told you had the antelope neck in
- 4:52Speaker 1: there too, and I didn't grill it prior to I
- 4:56Speaker 1: just threw it in the bag. And and I'm wondering
- 5:00Speaker 1: and if that's why it took that, because when you
- 5:02Speaker 1: charter something, it's supposed to create like the what is
- 5:06Speaker 1: that my yard process, which is uh, you know, it's
- 5:10Speaker 1: starting to break down. Not familiar with it. Um, So
- 5:14Speaker 1: I'm wondering if growing the shank accelerated the shank breaking
- 5:20Speaker 1: down that much faster than the antelope neck that had
- 5:23Speaker 1: already been in there for twenty four hours, and the
- 5:26Speaker 1: shank got done faster than the antalope neck anyway, pulled
- 5:30Speaker 1: the shank out, uh, pulled all that meat and dusted
- 5:37Speaker 1: at real heavy with the chio picabra green taco. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm still working our way through our spice kit by
- 5:47Speaker 1: the way, and it's kind of like welling alphabetical son
- 5:50Speaker 1: of a gun. That's good. Um. And put some of
- 5:54Speaker 1: that way goo bee fat in the skillet and crisped
- 5:58Speaker 1: it up that way. That makes a mean kitchen taco. Yeah. Actually,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Maggie came over and filmed in the garage a gun
- 6:09Speaker 1: set up video that we did, and so I got
- 6:12Speaker 1: a feed her kitchen tacos and she enjoyed. She approved good. Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 1: all right, that's good stuff. Um, so let's talk about
- 6:23Speaker 1: my my draw. I drew them out and go tag
- 6:25Speaker 1: real quick, um, not real quicklation. Steve just got word
- 6:30Speaker 1: today and I was unsuccessful. I just got word today.
- 6:34Speaker 1: How many years did you put in? Well, I was
- 6:37Speaker 1: putting in before they even came out with bonus points.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Approximately what year did you start more than half your life? No? Yeah? Better?
- 7:03Speaker 1: Not only um was he good at math, but just
- 7:06Speaker 1: like has a real way of making it feel profound.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You're right, half my life, yeah, Drew, But check this out.
- 7:13Speaker 1: My brother moved to this state. Granted he never moved way,
- 7:17Speaker 1: he just stayed put. He moved to this state right
- 7:19Speaker 1: when I did. Okay, In that in that time, he
- 7:24Speaker 1: drew Mountain, goat Moose. There's like, I should give you
- 7:30Speaker 1: a little background. There's three tags that are real hard
- 7:32Speaker 1: to draw. Here. I mean there's all kinds of special units.
- 7:34Speaker 1: But in the state of Montana there's three Moose, sheep
- 7:38Speaker 1: and gold are like real hard to draw. In most
- 7:40Speaker 1: days all over the West, moose, sheep and go hard
- 7:43Speaker 1: to draw U. And the time that I've been putting
- 7:47Speaker 1: in so so, he drew goat moose, big horn, go again. Okay,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and I drew finally go. And when he draw, when
- 8:00Speaker 1: he dream out and go the first time he had
- 8:01Speaker 1: to go, wait seven years to start all drawn again
- 8:04Speaker 1: and waited seven years draw another damn go take. Yeah.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I think he's quite applying now, right. He's taking himself barely.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Even when he drew his last go tag, he barely
- 8:13Speaker 1: even went yea, he half asked it. But he's doing
- 8:17Speaker 1: that not because he's kind of over it, but because
- 8:20Speaker 1: I think he thinks he feels like he should take
- 8:22Speaker 1: himself out of the running, right, really he told you that.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I don't know. So he's just bored of it. He's
- 8:29Speaker 1: like what it was like. He was like, I'm gonna
- 8:31Speaker 1: get it elk, then I'll go get him out. He
- 8:33Speaker 1: wanted to get it out. But I'm saying he don't
- 8:35Speaker 1: think he's participating anymore in the draws. He's still applying
- 8:38Speaker 1: for sheep again. I thought the story was he yanked
- 8:43Speaker 1: himself out because he's already already done it. So did
- 8:47Speaker 1: he get the second go? No, he didn't really care.
- 8:54Speaker 1: He got his once in a lifetime tags taken care of.
- 8:58Speaker 1: If you don't care, I guess, don't apply. I'm chexting
- 9:01Speaker 1: them right now in case people are wondering what happened
- 9:02Speaker 1: to the host. But they're not. They're not once in
- 9:04Speaker 1: a lifetime in Montana, obviously for most people. They are.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You can you can talk to that point. Yeah, I'm
- 9:15Speaker 1: gonna have to have a long life, a long, long,
- 9:19Speaker 1: ppable life, so now. But but the point being, you're
- 9:22Speaker 1: you're all upset about how you've been putting in and
- 9:25Speaker 1: never drew. But they didn't start doing that. They didn't
- 9:27Speaker 1: start doing bonus points until until later. Well. Yeah, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: and to the state of Montana. So what year did
- 9:35Speaker 1: you really put were you really putting in before I was?
- 9:37Speaker 1: Were you really putting in back? And you're wrong, You
- 9:41Speaker 1: honestly did put in years. Yeah. I mean I've been
- 9:46Speaker 1: putting in since I was able to apply, right, unless
- 9:52Speaker 1: my dad was just totally screwing with me lying yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 1: he's like a son. I didn't give you any allowance
- 9:57Speaker 1: because I put you in for a goat u. Um. Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but yeah, I mean the whole bonus point thing. I
- 10:05Speaker 1: just hate that that's even a part of the conversation.
- 10:07Speaker 1: We've already talked about that. It's the worst thing Montana's
- 10:11Speaker 1: ever done to people, other than let nonresidents apply. You know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: they should be ashamed the whole state. Um. You weren't
- 10:22Speaker 1: saying that tune when you were living in Idaho and
- 10:24Speaker 1: still applying over here, were you. Yeah? I mean, honestly,
- 10:28Speaker 1: here's where I screwed myself a little bit too. I
- 10:31Speaker 1: was so disgusted and heartbroken and ashamed to call myself Montana. Uh,
- 10:37Speaker 1: due to the fact that we instituted a bonus point
- 10:40Speaker 1: program that's not even really a bonus point um that
- 10:43Speaker 1: I refused to even purchase them. A few years, which
- 10:48Speaker 1: you know only hurts myself. Why is it not at true?
- 10:51Speaker 1: What you were so upset you quit drawing? No, I
- 10:57Speaker 1: had applied, but I wouldn't get the bonus point. Huh
- 11:01Speaker 1: yeah makes zero? Can you real quick explain to people
- 11:05Speaker 1: what a bonus point is the case they're curious, and
- 11:07Speaker 1: then to explain why you would, um, why you would
- 11:12Speaker 1: do that to yourself? And then three why it's not
- 11:15Speaker 1: a bonus point? You know what they call it that?
- 11:17Speaker 1: And for what system you prepare? Uh? Order again, I'm
- 11:25Speaker 1: gonna go from from top to bottom. What system I prefer?
- 11:31Speaker 1: What is it we're talking about? Um? So, a bonus
- 11:35Speaker 1: point is basically a uh something that instead of putting
- 11:42Speaker 1: your name in the hat once, you put your name
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the hat twice. If you have a bonus point, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 1: go for it. I hate it so much. I mean
- 11:52Speaker 1: it's just stupid. Let's say you have a uh let's
- 11:57Speaker 1: say the interest in the resource outweighs the source and
- 12:00Speaker 1: you have, um you have You've determined that you can
- 12:03Speaker 1: kill ten mountain goats out of a mountain range without
- 12:07Speaker 1: damaging the population. But there's a hundred people that are like,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I'll go, well, you gotta pick ten of them. So
- 12:12Speaker 1: they picked ten of them by having a drawing, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: now all hundred of those people sending an application, they
- 12:17Speaker 1: send ten of them a tag. What happens the other
- 12:20Speaker 1: ninety people, They say to them, but here's a consolation prize.
- 12:24Speaker 1: You get a bonus point. So the next year, we
- 12:26Speaker 1: do the same thing all over if you pay an
- 12:28Speaker 1: extra two dollars give me. If you give us two
- 12:30Speaker 1: dollars dollars or ten dollars or fifty years next year
- 12:32Speaker 1: and we do this all over again, you'll get an
- 12:35Speaker 1: extra point, meaning your name will be in the hat
- 12:37Speaker 1: two times next year because you're a loyal customer. Ten
- 12:40Speaker 1: years goes by. This guy is like, I still have
- 12:42Speaker 1: a drawing in these damn tags. You're like, well, I
- 12:44Speaker 1: guess what, buddy, your name goes in the hat now
- 12:46Speaker 1: ten times because you've tried ten times. And that keeps
- 12:49Speaker 1: some whipper snapper who hasn't been with the program and
- 12:52Speaker 1: hasn't been participating from coming in and gobbling up tag
- 12:55Speaker 1: out from under a guy who should be getting some
- 12:57Speaker 1: preferential treatment for the fact that he's a return customer.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Doesn't Montana square them, not at first. Now they square them,
- 13:04Speaker 1: so when I send my stuff in, I'm in there
- 13:06Speaker 1: like fos, which I love the fact that you guys
- 13:09Speaker 1: are like so excited about it, right because it's like,
- 13:13Speaker 1: oh gosh, free here tomorrow. Okay, So, now, what's what's
- 13:21Speaker 1: wrong with the system? You think it should be the
- 13:22Speaker 1: young waper snappers come in and have the same rights
- 13:28Speaker 1: as as a repeat die hard sticking to it, long
- 13:33Speaker 1: time supporter conservationist conservationist. What I think is, once you
- 13:41Speaker 1: draw a tag, you should be done if you are successful,
- 13:45Speaker 1: so it's more of a once in a lifetime thing
- 13:47Speaker 1: and then that just accomplishes. Okay, but that's not what
- 13:49Speaker 1: we're talking about. Um. That was question number four on
- 13:53Speaker 1: this topic. I believe, um. Yeah, And and I think
- 14:00Speaker 1: this idea of like accruing points when everybody else is
- 14:06Speaker 1: on the same points system and then everybody's points gets
- 14:09Speaker 1: squared at the same time, and it's just adds a
- 14:12Speaker 1: bunch of bureauq cradic crap to this system. The whole
- 14:17Speaker 1: the systems bureaucratic. Yeah. By definition, it's put on by
- 14:20Speaker 1: a bureau and then folks like me who just like
- 14:26Speaker 1: to think about hunting in the outside and enjoying life
- 14:31Speaker 1: have you started thinking about math in regards to you
- 14:36Speaker 1: don't get to write down how many times you ought
- 14:38Speaker 1: to be in there. Um. We were on a conversation today,
- 14:42Speaker 1: right Sam Longern, And uh, he's like, yeah, it's the
- 14:49Speaker 1: first year that I really gotten the nitty gritty And
- 14:51Speaker 1: I started comparing all the units and all the bet
- 14:56Speaker 1: and I found out that this one gives me a
- 14:58Speaker 1: one point nine percent chance of rying. And that's the
- 15:01Speaker 1: unit where I drew the tag. It's like, oh boy,
- 15:04Speaker 1: that first you made me hate moose hunting, and then
- 15:08Speaker 1: you got a moose tag that great. Um, dude, To
- 15:13Speaker 1: be honest with you, cow this is like, I mean,
- 15:16Speaker 1: it's in the best possible way, but the criticism you're
- 15:21Speaker 1: given is like it just sounds like, um, what's the
- 15:25Speaker 1: word I'm looking for, oldge whining. Oh listen, I'm not
- 15:32Speaker 1: gonna stand up there and say I'm the I'm the
- 15:34Speaker 1: smart guy in the room for not buying into the system. Like, uh,
- 15:38Speaker 1: everybody else, who'd I can walk off the bridge? They
- 15:42Speaker 1: saw somebody else walk off the bridge. Um, hey, there's
- 15:47Speaker 1: a lot of stages. Yeah, there's states they don't do
- 15:49Speaker 1: it like they don't do it in Alaska, which is
- 15:51Speaker 1: a great state to you know, do through the permit, Idaho,
- 15:57Speaker 1: New Mexico, Wyoming, goats and Buffalo. Still, yeah, Montana for bison.
- 16:05Speaker 1: My approach on it. They don't do bonus points for bison. No,
- 16:08Speaker 1: it's as far as I know, it's all everyone in
- 16:11Speaker 1: the same chance, which is a lottery, which is what
- 16:15Speaker 1: pure lottery, which is what you prefer. Yeah, everyone's got
- 16:19Speaker 1: the same chance. And you think the minute, let's say
- 16:21Speaker 1: it is pure lottery, it's pure lottery. You think the
- 16:24Speaker 1: minute someone goes in and reads the provided pamphlet, and
- 16:29Speaker 1: the provided pamphlet gives you the percentage chances you'd have
- 16:34Speaker 1: of drawing a tag, that not only ruins the draw
- 16:37Speaker 1: but it ruins the hunting for that species. No, it doesn't.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I just don't like having that stuff forced upon me.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And I've run into so many people in the hunting
- 16:48Speaker 1: industry where it's like that's their brand, and it's like
- 16:53Speaker 1: statistics and then the inches and then then and just
- 17:00Speaker 1: you just want to go hunting, man, I just want
- 17:02Speaker 1: to go hunting. That's why I pay attention to the drugs.
- 17:09Speaker 1: That's a great way to get a lot of extra opportunity.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Is looking at that little charge you if you're on
- 17:15Speaker 1: the mark or not. You know, it's a it's an
- 17:17Speaker 1: in good faith sense of entitlement too. It's like, well,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'm I'm a good guy and I help lots of
- 17:24Speaker 1: people learn how to hunt, and I had faithfully apply
- 17:28Speaker 1: every time, even though I think the system is god
- 17:31Speaker 1: awful and terrible and Montana ruined it for no good
- 17:34Speaker 1: reason halfway through my life. Um, I should just get
- 17:39Speaker 1: one of those tags here one of these days. And
- 17:42Speaker 1: it's just not what what is the why do they
- 17:46Speaker 1: why do they do it? Like? What is the what? What? What?
- 17:50Speaker 1: What's to gain from doing the system? They make more
- 17:53Speaker 1: revenue somehow, Yeah they're they were making more revenue. Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I bet One thing it does is it creates dudes
- 17:59Speaker 1: like me who are damned, you're not gonna miss a
- 18:01Speaker 1: year because you gotta get them points. Yeah, it's like
- 18:05Speaker 1: frequent flyer mentality. Yeah, you start being like, good thing,
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'm flying somewhere. I'll get more frequent flyer status than
- 18:12Speaker 1: true point system. You know, so we have a bonus point.
- 18:18Speaker 1: But you know there's lots of one of the questions
- 18:23Speaker 1: Colorado right where it's like, no, if the whole state.
- 18:27Speaker 1: If you get X amount of points, you will draw
- 18:30Speaker 1: this tag. Not necessarily if you get an x amount,
- 18:34Speaker 1: but that you have more than anybody else. The only
- 18:39Speaker 1: way it's true preference. If I have tann and you
- 18:41Speaker 1: have nine, I would draw before you do. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 1: the max point holders and and that stuff always bummed
- 18:49Speaker 1: me out too, because I was like, so you're just
- 18:54Speaker 1: telling me, do not apply to all of these opportunities.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Explain point creepy. Then we gotta get to going. Here's
- 19:04Speaker 1: what let me do that. Let this ladies and gentlemen,
- 19:06Speaker 1: you asked him, We answered a special question. Episode First,
- 19:11Speaker 1: we're gonna spend three hours have people air their grievance.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Is about the fact that I put in the time
- 19:17Speaker 1: and effort and money and drew a goat take. I'd
- 19:19Speaker 1: be lying if I wasn't thinking, I'm like, man, I
- 19:22Speaker 1: hope that song Jeane loves jezz Bell? Who is that jealous?
- 19:26Speaker 1: An avalanche sweep Steve Off like right about when he's
- 19:29Speaker 1: bought ready to touch that round off and then his
- 19:34Speaker 1: kids are gonna be so bummed about hunting they'll never
- 19:36Speaker 1: put in for a special draw tag that'll increase my
- 19:39Speaker 1: odds that's his long play. Someone had to be compete
- 19:43Speaker 1: with them. Ornella kids explain Point Creep just just just
- 19:48Speaker 1: because times in the Colorado and I don't know what
- 19:53Speaker 1: other states have true preference Wyoming, Wyoming, maybe Arizona true preference. Yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I'll explain it. But yeah, Arizona I think is more
- 20:04Speaker 1: of a bonus system because I think you always have
- 20:06Speaker 1: an actual chance. But in Colorado it's true preference, um,
- 20:12Speaker 1: surprisingly only for deer and elk, not for the other ones. Yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 1: um there, it's more like a bonus point. But the
- 20:22Speaker 1: preference point basically means that, um, if there are you know,
- 20:29Speaker 1: ten applicants that all have the max points, which means
- 20:33Speaker 1: they've been applying every year since the program started that
- 20:38Speaker 1: and it might be I think these days it's getting
- 20:40Speaker 1: up near thirty, isn't it close to thirty years have
- 20:42Speaker 1: been doing it. So those people that have max points
- 20:45Speaker 1: will draw first before the people that have one point
- 20:50Speaker 1: less than them, and so on down the line it goes.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And so in Point Creep there's so few tags and
- 20:56Speaker 1: some of these units of these people with all these
- 20:58Speaker 1: points want that every year it takes one more point
- 21:02Speaker 1: to draw it, meaning that the max max point hold.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Their pool never gets it doesn't get satisfied. Yeah, so
- 21:11Speaker 1: the guys are twenty five points. This year there was
- 21:14Speaker 1: twenty of them. They're not cleared off the docket, that's right.
- 21:17Speaker 1: So the next year it takes twenty six The minimum
- 21:20Speaker 1: times you've explained is I never really understood it. Yeah,
- 21:23Speaker 1: the minimum just keeps going up every year. It used
- 21:26Speaker 1: to be because you're not like, oh now, like you're
- 21:28Speaker 1: sitting on nineteen points, You're like, oh now, all the
- 21:31Speaker 1: twenty point guys are gone because they got their ship.
- 21:35Speaker 1: They're not gone. And it's gonna come down to how
- 21:37Speaker 1: big that pool of people is. Because if it is
- 21:39Speaker 1: what I'm explaining, like ten tags and twenty people in
- 21:42Speaker 1: the max bonus point pool, sure it'll only take two
- 21:45Speaker 1: years to pull them out and it would drop down
- 21:48Speaker 1: to the next one. Right, So every other year you
- 21:51Speaker 1: kind of reset a little bit. But I think some
- 21:53Speaker 1: of those there's people that have there's hundreds of people
- 21:57Speaker 1: that have max bonus points. So it depends on where
- 21:59Speaker 1: this point, yeah, max preference points, So it depends on
- 22:01Speaker 1: where they're putting their energy, and you know where they're applying.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I'd like folks to know Um, folks out there sitting
- 22:08Speaker 1: who are thinking like cal who are like, jeez, Louise,
- 22:11Speaker 1: really that there's a couple of states dry desert states,
- 22:17Speaker 1: dry desert states that they just have low populations, low
- 22:21Speaker 1: wildlife populations, and high populations of people. So you go
- 22:24Speaker 1: like Arizona and you have like the Phoenix area right
- 22:27Speaker 1: Salt Lake City or in Utah, so you got like
- 22:29Speaker 1: big population centers, dry climate, not tons of egg necessarily,
- 22:35Speaker 1: that's not tons of farming that supports high wildlife numbers. Anyhow,
- 22:39Speaker 1: there's some states out there where a lot of hunting
- 22:42Speaker 1: opportunities are tied to drawing permits like that. You could
- 22:47Speaker 1: you could feasibly be a resident one of these states
- 22:50Speaker 1: and not really draw and have a year where you
- 22:52Speaker 1: don't get a good opportunity to hunt big game. No,
- 22:55Speaker 1: that can happen for the most part that we're talking
- 22:58Speaker 1: about is like elite group of hard player type stuff,
- 23:01Speaker 1: meaning UM, most states of there's all kind of stuff
- 23:05Speaker 1: you can hunt. You go down to the gas station,
- 23:06Speaker 1: you buy your permits. We're to be talking about UH
- 23:09Speaker 1: states to allocate either like a certain species which are
- 23:13Speaker 1: not abundant species UM, and they'll allocate hunts that way,
- 23:18Speaker 1: or certain areas where a state will carve off a
- 23:21Speaker 1: little chunk of of itself and be like, this is
- 23:24Speaker 1: gonna be an area where we're gonna really limit how
- 23:27Speaker 1: many people can hunt there, and uh um, and try
- 23:31Speaker 1: to like grow extra big specimens of animals in this
- 23:34Speaker 1: area and create like this really amazing experience. And so
- 23:36Speaker 1: we're gonna do a permit draw allocation here. But this
- 23:39Speaker 1: is not what it takes to do all this, And
- 23:41Speaker 1: there are plenty of people that hunt their asses off
- 23:43Speaker 1: every year that don't do these permit draws. But once
- 23:47Speaker 1: you get into them, I find it's fun just for
- 23:50Speaker 1: its own sake. I view it as something even more
- 23:54Speaker 1: than a means to an end, just like Cal hates um,
- 23:59Speaker 1: Like I actually like I. I take enjoyment in it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: It feels like it feels like gambling, but I don't
- 24:05Speaker 1: like to gamble. Yeah, so be if Trump wins, I
- 24:08Speaker 1: win four bucks. Hard player. When Steve says hard player,
- 24:13Speaker 1: this is a group of hard players, elite group of
- 24:16Speaker 1: hard players, like a craps table, I didn't say this
- 24:19Speaker 1: is a group or there may be one or two
- 24:22Speaker 1: at the craps table that you'd call an athlete, whereas
- 24:27Speaker 1: the rest you're just sitting there smoking and they're like
- 24:29Speaker 1: rolling dice. Yeah, yeah, it's a system. Yeah, you can
- 24:36Speaker 1: become a guy that counts cards, not the count cards
- 24:41Speaker 1: and crap. What's the what's the craps what's the craps
- 24:43Speaker 1: version what I'm trying to say, you know the odds. Yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 1: you could be like a real an elite hard player
- 24:50Speaker 1: and and get a lot of value out of the system.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Or you could be a guy who just sits down
- 24:54Speaker 1: and wants to have a free drink and lose some
- 24:56Speaker 1: money and and and wind up coming away feel a
- 24:59Speaker 1: little burned open. Steve slides down a mountain. But I'll
- 25:04Speaker 1: point out this is the after all these years, Okay,
- 25:08Speaker 1: this this is the first I've been applying since let's
- 25:14Speaker 1: say Extra Safe because I didn't do it, and no,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I didn't apply as non resident or you know, this
- 25:23Speaker 1: is the first time I drew one of these things
- 25:25Speaker 1: in all these years. Okay, It's not like I'm not
- 25:30Speaker 1: like the guy cleaning up in the pit. Boss is
- 25:34Speaker 1: like calling up to the up floor to have washed
- 25:36Speaker 1: me through the camera. Like I'm just a dude, man,
- 25:39Speaker 1: I'm a dude grinding it out, and I would think
- 25:42Speaker 1: that you would be happy do one last quick thing.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Tell uh seth, tell tell everyone what Rick Smith's observation
- 25:54Speaker 1: was the other day. My favorite sentence of all time.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Oh he uh. He says, how can it be cold
- 26:04Speaker 1: outside when my balls are still claiming? Yes? Great question. Um.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I modified it to be like sweaty, but that's what
- 26:13Speaker 1: he was getting at. And it's like, it's like, I
- 26:14Speaker 1: was like, you know, right, that is a really good question.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I don't understand it either. Cal. I'm sure it was
- 26:23Speaker 1: a little um sarcastic too. But in your little in
- 26:26Speaker 1: the email he sent back, when you're when you were
- 26:29Speaker 1: all pissy about not drawing anything, you're also telling all
- 26:32Speaker 1: of us out of state or to pack our bags
- 26:34Speaker 1: and go home to increase your odes. I should amend
- 26:37Speaker 1: that because you don't have to apply. It should be
- 26:41Speaker 1: a birthright. Yeah, I've never seen anyone say that on
- 26:44Speaker 1: a social media post. During this quarantine thing, I was laughing.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I was like, go, you'd build a wall around the state. Yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 1: put people back to work, Mr Trump, build that m
- 27:01Speaker 1: pro wall just not down there. Yeah, whether waste on
- 27:04Speaker 1: that waste on that walling material. I got a way
- 27:09Speaker 1: shorter border. Okay, question, do you spike by spikes? He's
- 27:15Speaker 1: saying spikes. Do you know that there was a there
- 27:18Speaker 1: was an ice fishing bait called spikes in Michigan? You
- 27:20Speaker 1: know what? Do you get? Um? Raise? You haven't? You
- 27:23Speaker 1: know what a spike is? Ice fishing? Yeah, a waxy
- 27:30Speaker 1: A wax worm is like a you know, little larva.
- 27:34Speaker 1: The hell it from? I knew it once once upon
- 27:36Speaker 1: a time. A waxworm. A spike is one of those
- 27:39Speaker 1: that has a tail on it, or mousies. Yeah, we
- 27:42Speaker 1: call the mousies mouse's and spikes. It look like it's
- 27:47Speaker 1: like with a little mouse. It looks like a little
- 27:49Speaker 1: it's a maggot with a tail, and you'd call it
- 27:51Speaker 1: a spike or a mousey. But this guy when he
- 27:54Speaker 1: says do spikes always stay spikes? He's talking to spike bucks.
- 27:57Speaker 1: So a buck that throws two pencil antlers, do they
- 28:01Speaker 1: always stay spikes? Is it beneficial to kill them over
- 28:04Speaker 1: a big buck because of poorer jeans? Uh? No? And no, no,
- 28:09Speaker 1: they do not always stay spikes. And the next year
- 28:13Speaker 1: they'll grow a different angler. And two, it's been proven
- 28:17Speaker 1: conclusively that if a buck that's a spike that does
- 28:24Speaker 1: not indicate his destiny as a buck. That's right. He
- 28:29Speaker 1: will not always be like a little dank back. He's
- 28:34Speaker 1: got just a much chance, just like a little small
- 28:36Speaker 1: second grade kid. You can't say, oh, you'll always be,
- 28:41Speaker 1: you know, a little small kid. Yeah, I found a
- 28:45Speaker 1: spike elk Antler on the ground here yesterday, did you really? Yeah,
- 28:50Speaker 1: it's a nice one too, are really cool? Yeah, they're cool. Oh,
- 28:55Speaker 1: probably fourteen inches yeah. Um. The uh, the reason that
- 29:01Speaker 1: some units have spike like spike specific tags is, uh,
- 29:07Speaker 1: they find that it increases the health of the herd
- 29:13Speaker 1: over time. But it's based off of the fact that
- 29:16Speaker 1: you're taking an animal out of the group that's kind
- 29:19Speaker 1: of voted nature has voted it most likely to die anyway.
- 29:22Speaker 1: It's in that age class of not making it out
- 29:26Speaker 1: of the the learning curve yet m m. Yeah. And
- 29:30Speaker 1: it allows you way to kill. It gives you a
- 29:32Speaker 1: way to kill younger bulls at all, killing too many
- 29:35Speaker 1: younger bulls because it's like you'd be that you know
- 29:37Speaker 1: that you might only have x percentage out of the
- 29:39Speaker 1: population are going to be that way anyway, Yeah, that
- 29:42Speaker 1: they're even gonna be eligible to be hunted. Yeah, if
- 29:45Speaker 1: you ever get the opportunity to look over a big
- 29:47Speaker 1: elk herd, try to pick out all the spikes. Yeah,
- 29:51Speaker 1: I'm talking. A lot of guys have drawn spike tags
- 29:53Speaker 1: and they're thinking they're just gonna be waiting around through spikes.
- 29:55Speaker 1: But you're reviewing your mind. Man, It's like you go
- 29:57Speaker 1: a long time without having to spike in front of you.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You know, it's not like there is everywhere a lot
- 30:02Speaker 1: of places they're protected. You can't shoot them. Yeah. Who
- 30:08Speaker 1: highlighted best advice for hunting public lands and pressured areas?
- 30:12Speaker 1: Question mark? Did I do that? Oh? I did? It
- 30:17Speaker 1: seems like a very broad Well I was gonna narrow
- 30:20Speaker 1: it down to a tip. I'll give a tip. I
- 30:24Speaker 1: think everyone should offer a tip. It doesn't need to
- 30:27Speaker 1: be broadly applicable, but just a tip that comes to mind.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Hunting public lands and pressured areas my tip, and it's
- 30:37Speaker 1: not applicable to all situations, but it's a way of thinking.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Is there are ways those not ideal to be in
- 30:44Speaker 1: a high pressured area with a lot of other hunters
- 30:47Speaker 1: competing with you. Um, but my tip is ask yourself,
- 30:52Speaker 1: think about are there ways that I could make this
- 30:55Speaker 1: pressure work for me. Um, I've seen that happen like
- 31:02Speaker 1: places where when all hell breaks loose on opening day.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I have a feeling that these deer are gonna blank
- 31:10Speaker 1: right and make it work for you and have it
- 31:12Speaker 1: make it be part of your plan. Yeah, yeah, I
- 31:16Speaker 1: like that. The pressure were used to duck hunt in
- 31:19Speaker 1: a spot every year, open day of duck season, the
- 31:21Speaker 1: Mouskegan Marsh. Your success relied on there being tons of
- 31:26Speaker 1: people in the marsh. You got good shooting all day
- 31:30Speaker 1: long if you hunt it over to stream channels and
- 31:33Speaker 1: stuff because people's bump birds all day and then tend
- 31:35Speaker 1: in the morning, everybody decided to go home, and it
- 31:37Speaker 1: really heats up because everybody gets in the riverboat and
- 31:39Speaker 1: gets out in the main channel to drive the riverboat back,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and they put all the ducks back up in the
- 31:43Speaker 1: air again, and it was like you needed it to
- 31:45Speaker 1: be high pressure, which leads me to my hot tip
- 31:48Speaker 1: go ahead, would be get up earlier or get up later.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So you either beat everyone out there by getting up
- 31:57Speaker 1: really early, or you sleep in and you get out
- 32:02Speaker 1: there about ten am and wait for them to get
- 32:06Speaker 1: out of there. Wait for them to get out uh
- 32:10Speaker 1: and you may catch some animals moving because they know
- 32:12Speaker 1: the schedule of the bulk of the hunting population. So
- 32:19Speaker 1: my tip would be too, there's a lot of surveys
- 32:21Speaker 1: out there, like collar like where they're collaring animals in
- 32:24Speaker 1: high pressured areas. Just see what you're doing. And uh,
- 32:28Speaker 1: oftentimes those surveys revealed that like say a big white
- 32:32Speaker 1: tail buck is hanging out hundred fifty yard hundred hunter
- 32:37Speaker 1: fifty yards from the parking lot because everyone's walking right
- 32:40Speaker 1: past it. You know, Yeah, we had that. We had uh,
- 32:44Speaker 1: the turkey Master, Mike Chamberlain Mayor, they had this turkey
- 32:50Speaker 1: that couldn't be killed. He would even send people out
- 32:53Speaker 1: and tell them because they were studying how this turkey
- 32:56Speaker 1: couldn't be killed. He'd send people out and say, here's
- 32:59Speaker 1: what the turkey has. Go try to get him. They
- 33:00Speaker 1: won't be able to get him. Eventually, a guy gets
- 33:02Speaker 1: in the fight with his wife, drives down the road,
- 33:04Speaker 1: parks at the parking area at the state where the
- 33:06Speaker 1: check station, walks over the hill of the pout and
- 33:08Speaker 1: kills that turkey. There's overlooked areas, overlooked spot. No one
- 33:14Speaker 1: was hunting the parking lot. A guy that I hunted
- 33:19Speaker 1: elk with when I was just starting out our tree hunting.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Real goofy dude, really real fun guy. Um, but that
- 33:26Speaker 1: was his thing. Like you would drive up to the
- 33:29Speaker 1: parking lot at the trailhead or whatever his spot was
- 33:33Speaker 1: on the side of the road, you know, slam corridors,
- 33:37Speaker 1: be talking. And then the second his boot went from
- 33:42Speaker 1: gravel to dirt, his body went into creep mode and
- 33:47Speaker 1: he had his cow call in his mouth it was
- 33:50Speaker 1: I need wait and listen. And he hunted from I
- 33:53Speaker 1: mean from basically the truck door on like the the
- 33:58Speaker 1: second he pivoted from away from the truck door, he
- 34:02Speaker 1: was hunting. And and that has definitely served me well.
- 34:07Speaker 1: But not just to blow pass all the stuff that
- 34:08Speaker 1: everybody else must be. Yeah, yeah, my tip would be
- 34:15Speaker 1: to uh, no that country better than everybody else walking
- 34:21Speaker 1: a lot, criss cross it, no every little draw at
- 34:24Speaker 1: what every little ridge top looks like, and just really
- 34:28Speaker 1: commit the landscape to your memory, not just in hunting season.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Probably sure, well, yeah, that's probably not the time I'd
- 34:37Speaker 1: be walking around it. Uh, That's the time I'd be
- 34:40Speaker 1: hunting it, you know. But I think, yeah, enough people
- 34:44Speaker 1: don't like just no their landscape well enough so that
- 34:48Speaker 1: they can be standing anywhere on their pressured land and
- 34:52Speaker 1: just know exactly what it looks like on the other
- 34:54Speaker 1: side of the ridge or two ridges over, which leads
- 34:59Speaker 1: to knowing places like no matter how much pressure a
- 35:05Speaker 1: unit is getting, there's it's still gonna be places that
- 35:07Speaker 1: aren't getting hunted just because of the way the landscape
- 35:11Speaker 1: lays out, or where the trails lead or the roads leads.
- 35:14Speaker 1: So look for spots to go into where you're bushwhacking,
- 35:18Speaker 1: you know, don't use trails, and and find places to
- 35:22Speaker 1: access country that's not getting accessed easily by a bunch
- 35:26Speaker 1: of other hunters. Well, joe ye, who's right? Sometimes, Oh man,
- 35:31Speaker 1: it just is hard. I think like staying optimistic, which
- 35:36Speaker 1: is hard too, is that that's just hard. It's hard.
- 35:40Speaker 1: That's the reality. Absolutely, Okay. Strategy for when turkeys are
- 35:48Speaker 1: calling back but not coming in, which I feel like
- 35:51Speaker 1: it is that that's called turkey hunting. That's most days,
- 35:56Speaker 1: that's turkey hunting. That's what turkey hunting is. It's you
- 36:00Speaker 1: hear a bird call and then lowland, then lo and
- 36:03Speaker 1: behold it does not come in. Um, we we walked
- 36:09Speaker 1: away from some birds this year, um and called and
- 36:16Speaker 1: then they there are three of them. They turned and
- 36:21Speaker 1: decided now was the time to come. They like ran
- 36:24Speaker 1: back right back into our exact same spots that we
- 36:26Speaker 1: have been calling from. Oh you left the spot yep,
- 36:30Speaker 1: So birds were across this draw. It was way too
- 36:33Speaker 1: wide open going to come in to do anything. So
- 36:35Speaker 1: I was like, well, let's just set up and call.
- 36:38Speaker 1: We call and call, and they're chatting and kind of
- 36:41Speaker 1: shutting up for a while, and then looked to call
- 36:43Speaker 1: again and then they're like, oh, this just is not
- 36:45Speaker 1: gonna happen, So get up, walk up on top of
- 36:51Speaker 1: the ridge, which was only about seventy five yards probably
- 36:55Speaker 1: call again, and then you know, it was just the
- 36:58Speaker 1: response was like, well, now we're coming. They gobbled back
- 37:03Speaker 1: and look and I could see these three black dots
- 37:05Speaker 1: just kind of like charging far away. Yeah. Is their
- 37:09Speaker 1: mood changes? Yeah, and just and ran right back up
- 37:14Speaker 1: into our same previous butt divots in the grass. And
- 37:21Speaker 1: three minutes later that tom was right there with a
- 37:25Speaker 1: m because they felt you were leaving, I guess yeah,
- 37:28Speaker 1: or maybe they could hear us better because we got
- 37:31Speaker 1: up a little bit higher. I do not know, but
- 37:33Speaker 1: it that's sure change their tune coincidence to you know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: absolutely decide to come sometimes I don't know. I like
- 37:47Speaker 1: I like to change angles on them when they're when
- 37:50Speaker 1: they're doing that, if possible. Well, after you left me
- 37:55Speaker 1: in around Miszool last week, I listened to some birds
- 37:59Speaker 1: gobble for an hour are over on private and I
- 38:01Speaker 1: wasn't gonna suck him over, so I just walked away.
- 38:04Speaker 1: At that point, you can't swing around on him. But
- 38:07Speaker 1: had they been doing the same thing, I was able
- 38:09Speaker 1: to go over there. I would have just you know,
- 38:11Speaker 1: come at him from degrees the other direction, you know,
- 38:16Speaker 1: try to get in front of him. If whatever the
- 38:18Speaker 1: way they're moving, I think if you can, if you
- 38:21Speaker 1: if you determine to that bird is moving like you
- 38:25Speaker 1: just out cruising, which still due man, it was like
- 38:27Speaker 1: late morning mill of the day they moved one. You
- 38:31Speaker 1: think that you get all excited because he's traveling around Goblin.
- 38:35Speaker 1: So we're like, well, this bird is good as debt
- 38:37Speaker 1: because he's obviously out looking for hands, you know. But
- 38:40Speaker 1: it's like he's he is, but he's doing something different
- 38:43Speaker 1: to which I'll never fully understand. But that does not
- 38:44Speaker 1: necessarily mean he's going to come in. But sometimes if
- 38:46Speaker 1: you can get ahead of him, it can change. We
- 38:51Speaker 1: called him one this year. This thing was just God
- 38:53Speaker 1: when God, when God, when God, when we were behind it.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Eventually it's slowed down and started messing around long enough
- 38:58Speaker 1: for us to pass him up. And then he came
- 38:59Speaker 1: right in when it was kind of more not following them,
- 39:03Speaker 1: chasing them, but came in, um Man. I don't know
- 39:09Speaker 1: different angles getting in their zone more. I think that
- 39:12Speaker 1: there's I've talked about this a bunch. I don't know
- 39:13Speaker 1: if it's true or not, but it feels true to me,
- 39:16Speaker 1: is that there's like, uh, there's a proximity where they
- 39:20Speaker 1: sort of can't they don't want to ignore you. You
- 39:23Speaker 1: know they're gonna do something, maybe you get maybe they're
- 39:25Speaker 1: gonna spook or not. But like you get into a
- 39:27Speaker 1: certain ring around them, they just perceived their area differently.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And I've had I can think of a few times
- 39:32Speaker 1: in my life where they're just gobbling and gobling and
- 39:36Speaker 1: you're calling their gobling gobling and nothing, and then you
- 39:38Speaker 1: somehow creep into some where it just can't ignore you.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And also and then they'll like pop over right because
- 39:48Speaker 1: you got so close they can't ignore you. Uh. Also
- 39:51Speaker 1: we this this just the other day. We just came
- 39:54Speaker 1: back the next day. Yep, I had a bird. It
- 39:57Speaker 1: was just seemed like unworkable. And came back the next
- 40:00Speaker 1: day and just kind of took what we learned from
- 40:02Speaker 1: the day before, walked away from him, could have stayed
- 40:04Speaker 1: out and ha asked him, walked away from him with
- 40:07Speaker 1: the plane like, let's come back in the morning. Came
- 40:09Speaker 1: back in the morning. Um, and it just was different.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I don't different mood, so I'm different happening the next day,
- 40:17Speaker 1: like had him just totally in our area, hanging out,
- 40:21Speaker 1: got him. And the day before he was like the
- 40:23Speaker 1: impossible turkey, you know, like the one like nightmares are
- 40:27Speaker 1: made up right, It's just like But then the next morning,
- 40:30Speaker 1: for whatever reason, he's like read it roll I like uh,
- 40:34Speaker 1: I like uh making noises that turkeys would make other
- 40:37Speaker 1: than calling, like scratching the duff, making it sound like
- 40:40Speaker 1: there's turkeys there, you know, because like you hear turkeys
- 40:44Speaker 1: in the woods walking around and doing ship without them
- 40:47Speaker 1: making a sound, so like make it sound like a turkey.
- 40:51Speaker 1: They made a lot of scratching noise and weird little sounds.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Vocal weird little vocalizations. Yeah, so that like the back
- 41:00Speaker 1: can fourth. That can get pretty exhausting. Like I call,
- 41:04Speaker 1: then you call, are you called? And I call. I
- 41:07Speaker 1: had two birds this weekend where this was going on
- 41:11Speaker 1: and on and on. It was in the evening, and
- 41:13Speaker 1: I was getting pretty paranoid that they were just gonna
- 41:16Speaker 1: turn and head for their roost wherever that was because
- 41:18Speaker 1: I hadn't found it, um And this was taken a
- 41:23Speaker 1: long time, And eventually they gobbled again and I just
- 41:28Speaker 1: hit him like three times in a row with a
- 41:31Speaker 1: yelpylp yelp, yelpylp, yelpilp yelp, And all of a sudden,
- 41:36Speaker 1: they were right in the spot where I couldn't shoot them,
- 41:40Speaker 1: but like three yards away. The Tom's totally strutted up
- 41:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, ninety degrees over my left shoulder. Yeah,
- 41:49Speaker 1: try changing your calls, up, your call sequence up, give
- 41:52Speaker 1: them something different. I'm also developing this theory about turkeys.
- 42:04Speaker 1: I've been developing it for a while. It's not fully developed,
- 42:08Speaker 1: um is. I think there's something going on where you
- 42:14Speaker 1: got like if you imagine a turkey, you picture that
- 42:17Speaker 1: all he's thinking about is sowing his seed. What she's
- 42:21Speaker 1: thinking about and that he views everything is being a
- 42:25Speaker 1: prelude to him sowing his seed. But I don't know
- 42:30Speaker 1: however they're wired. I'm starting to feel that turkeys find
- 42:33Speaker 1: some value, they get some satisfaction out of just studying
- 42:38Speaker 1: and gobbling, like that is to them an okay way
- 42:43Speaker 1: to spend a day. Do you know what I mean? Like,
- 42:46Speaker 1: I don't think like when you when you get a
- 42:48Speaker 1: turkey and he comes in and he's seventy five yards
- 42:50Speaker 1: away and he's just gobling and having a hell of
- 42:52Speaker 1: a time a goblin and strutting and he doesn't come in,
- 42:55Speaker 1: you won't be like, oh I messed it up. Oh
- 42:58Speaker 1: I spooked him out of six times, Like he doesn't
- 43:01Speaker 1: know what happened. He's just like just doing his thing
- 43:04Speaker 1: that he to him, that was a totally normal interaction.
- 43:07Speaker 1: He gobbled a bunch, he strutted all around, he like
- 43:11Speaker 1: did his thing, and the hen never came. Yeah, he
- 43:14Speaker 1: walked off and it was like he's like he walked
- 43:17Speaker 1: off happy, and it's like it's not like you blew
- 43:21Speaker 1: because then you want to be like, oh I blew it,
- 43:23Speaker 1: shut this and should that. But the turkey is probably
- 43:26Speaker 1: that was great. That's my mental conversation every time. It's like,
- 43:30Speaker 1: oh I got too close. Oh I give this too far.
- 43:34Speaker 1: If I'd only called that one more like after I
- 43:37Speaker 1: called made him gobble like eighty five times. If I'd
- 43:40Speaker 1: only called that one more time, he would have come in.
- 43:42Speaker 1: You know, it's like no, in his mind, he was
- 43:45Speaker 1: a great morning. He there's a there's a hand over
- 43:50Speaker 1: there by God, like I buy it. I just didn't
- 43:53Speaker 1: go over there. I'd throw another tip out there that
- 43:57Speaker 1: the purest won't like the purest callers, he can always
- 43:59Speaker 1: try sneaking in and bush whacking them too. That's how
- 44:04Speaker 1: That's how sound happened me the other day. But I
- 44:06Speaker 1: mean that's how I killed my first couple of turkeys.
- 44:09Speaker 1: And I had no confidence in raise your hand. If
- 44:11Speaker 1: you didn't kill your first turkey by bushwhacking, no hands
- 44:15Speaker 1: are Oh. That was our strategy and it still works.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Busha him especially, spot and stock him. Yeah, binoculars and
- 44:29Speaker 1: be like, dude, the minute he goes down that ditch,
- 44:31Speaker 1: run totally man. And we had a lot of success
- 44:38Speaker 1: like that. It's not nearly as fun their day. This
- 44:41Speaker 1: kind of weird thing to happened where the other day
- 44:43Speaker 1: I wound up, We got set up in the morning,
- 44:46Speaker 1: and I wound up having a turkey. I'm not joking
- 44:48Speaker 1: because I range found it like I wound up with
- 44:51Speaker 1: a turkey closer to me in a tree than my
- 44:57Speaker 1: decoy straight up above the basis, neck sticking out, and
- 45:03Speaker 1: I was like you, I didn't. I didn't. If I'd
- 45:07Speaker 1: been there with my kid, I you probably would have
- 45:09Speaker 1: been able to talking me into it. But I didn't
- 45:10Speaker 1: shoot them down out of the tree. But legal to
- 45:12Speaker 1: do it here. My understanding is, I don't know my
- 45:18Speaker 1: kid would have been putting an enormous amount of pressure
- 45:20Speaker 1: on you know, you shoot squirrels out of tree, Get
- 45:22Speaker 1: that bird out of that tree. I didn't do it.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Someone else grab one. Are broken socks considered better or
- 45:31Speaker 1: worse than the traditional flip flop. I'm not recommending burken stocks,
- 45:36Speaker 1: but it'll be better than a traditional flip flop for sure.
- 45:39Speaker 1: For if like a hunting sort of application, Oh yeah,
- 45:43Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah. If I had to hunt my regular flippies,
- 45:46Speaker 1: or I could wear burks, which I don't own, I'd
- 45:48Speaker 1: go burks like the hip time with the corks flip
- 45:50Speaker 1: flops aren't very quiet because of the flip and the flop,
- 45:57Speaker 1: and Burks are not going to expect the gun. They
- 46:01Speaker 1: through the woods and they're gonna be like, is he
- 46:06Speaker 1: gonna do? I don't recommend hunting either of them, but
- 46:09Speaker 1: know what he's saying, if if you have to go
- 46:12Speaker 1: with the Burkes. Uh, why do Red rock Crab get
- 46:18Speaker 1: such a bad rap compared to Dungeoness Crab? You know,
- 46:21Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. Our kids were picking
- 46:24Speaker 1: them up left and right last summer. Remember, I don't
- 46:27Speaker 1: know that the yield is less, the shells are harder
- 46:30Speaker 1: to crack and pick um, but that they're perfectly great.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I was at that Willows Restaurant, which is like this
- 46:39Speaker 1: world famous restaurant on Lummy Island and Puget Sound, um,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and they get all their stuff from around there, you know,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and they make this crazy stuff. It's really good. You
- 46:48Speaker 1: kind of got to go there and spend the night
- 46:49Speaker 1: and eat there, and it takes all damn night to
- 46:51Speaker 1: eat there. He does a lot of stuff, the Rock Crab, Yeah,
- 46:54Speaker 1: I love them. When we were grabbing and Jesse Griffithshore
- 46:57Speaker 1: likes him. Remember that we're of stones are rocks stones,
- 47:03Speaker 1: that's a way different crab. Or did we get some
- 47:05Speaker 1: rocks with Jesse? Are you talking about Jesse? Are you
- 47:08Speaker 1: talking about Jesseffs? We're trying to get stones because he
- 47:13Speaker 1: he did red rock. But with Jesse we were we
- 47:18Speaker 1: got stones, we were after stones, but no, we're after blues.
- 47:23Speaker 1: To the one you can just keep the claws yelled up.
- 47:28Speaker 1: I think they're great. I think that. Um. There's also
- 47:30Speaker 1: thing that happens where people have notions that they picked
- 47:34Speaker 1: up from people that had notions, and they picked up
- 47:37Speaker 1: those notions from people that had notions and none of
- 47:41Speaker 1: the notions matter. It's sort of like how antelope don't
- 47:44Speaker 1: taste good? How muled you're not as good as white tail?
- 47:48Speaker 1: No no, no, no, no no no no no. We've just
- 47:50Speaker 1: dumb stuff people say, like trafficking and dump stuff. I
- 47:54Speaker 1: like stuff you don't. I mean, you don't even have
- 47:56Speaker 1: to trap those things. You just wait around and grab
- 47:59Speaker 1: them grab. There is something to be said for an
- 48:03Speaker 1: easy to pick crab. Though. Here's a great question, what
- 48:09Speaker 1: are your thoughts on the notion of Pleistocene rewilding. I
- 48:13Speaker 1: think it is a complete waste of time. It's fun
- 48:16Speaker 1: to think about I'm not interested Plistocene rewilding. Uh, free
- 48:20Speaker 1: folks at home, is that you would um either re
- 48:28Speaker 1: You would either through genetic wizardry, um bring back right
- 48:35Speaker 1: like clone from whatever ship melting out of the perma frost.
- 48:40Speaker 1: That you would clone extinct ice age mammals from the
- 48:43Speaker 1: Plistocene um fauna and and cut them back loose. And
- 48:50Speaker 1: some people are like, oh the hell with that. What
- 48:52Speaker 1: you do is you just go get the closest approximation
- 48:55Speaker 1: it's still running around and cut that loose. So with
- 48:58Speaker 1: that thinking, you'd say, like, man is are gone, but
- 49:01Speaker 1: let's go get some African elephants and cut those loose
- 49:03Speaker 1: on the Great Plains. And they used to have horses
- 49:06Speaker 1: here during the plies of scenes, So we'll go get
- 49:07Speaker 1: horses from Siberia or Mongolian, cut those loose and on
- 49:12Speaker 1: down the line, and you put all the jump back
- 49:14Speaker 1: to make it look like it looked a long time ago. Uh.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think it's a distraction. You have fun distractions. Fun distraction.
- 49:26Speaker 1: I think that we should spend our efforts. Uh. If
- 49:30Speaker 1: if you're gonna make the goal, it comes down to
- 49:33Speaker 1: like if you're gonna make the goal, like the goal
- 49:36Speaker 1: is to look like X. I just don't think you
- 49:38Speaker 1: need to go back thirteen thousand years and have that
- 49:41Speaker 1: be the goal. Yeah, I mean so of a huge
- 49:45Speaker 1: argument for this rewilding right is to limit the amount
- 49:51Speaker 1: of greenhouse gases that are being released out of the
- 49:53Speaker 1: perma frost. And that's because you're in a lot of
- 49:57Speaker 1: these areas you have this in approachment of trees, willows
- 50:03Speaker 1: brush that um was not there when all this place
- 50:11Speaker 1: to scene fauna was out there, because they actively deforested
- 50:16Speaker 1: the area. So like bison, wooly mammoth, the horses, uh,
- 50:24Speaker 1: the different bovine species, they would be hell on trees
- 50:29Speaker 1: just like you see, if you have any of those
- 50:32Speaker 1: animals in your area, or the current approximations of them,
- 50:35Speaker 1: they'd rub up on trees and they kill trees like
- 50:38Speaker 1: elephants and drafts and whatnot. You know, elk and elk
- 50:42Speaker 1: or hell on small trees too, and they do it
- 50:44Speaker 1: to a certain degree. Um. Anyway, you expose that ground
- 50:49Speaker 1: and it gets a deeper frost, and that's what's keeping
- 50:52Speaker 1: the the perma frost. Yeah, I've read that. I've read
- 50:55Speaker 1: that argument for for rewilding the tundra, for rewilding. Then
- 51:00Speaker 1: there was a movement to rewild the Great Plains, and
- 51:04Speaker 1: that's just for for funzies, just people have Yeah, probably
- 51:08Speaker 1: they had like little summits about it, little conventions, and
- 51:12Speaker 1: it was that you'd bring in like woll the American
- 51:14Speaker 1: lion has gone, so we'll get an African lion. The
- 51:17Speaker 1: wooly rhino has gone. We'll just get a regular rhino,
- 51:21Speaker 1: maybe a zebra, I don't know now, and just started
- 51:25Speaker 1: calling stuff loose. So it looked like you did a
- 51:26Speaker 1: long time ago. It's beyond fancy, Like these people the
- 51:30Speaker 1: right whole damn books about this rewilding. Yeah, but I
- 51:34Speaker 1: guess that I'm all into rewilding. I don't know they
- 51:36Speaker 1: need to rewild till like a time we didn't understand.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I think you just like in my mind, like if
- 51:41Speaker 1: we're gonna be like, what's the benchmark, Like the benchmark
- 51:44Speaker 1: would be in my mind, the time of European contact. Yeah,
- 51:49Speaker 1: I guess if there was a purpose though, like a
- 51:52Speaker 1: contemporary example at as Anthony Lacotta and I are hiking
- 51:56Speaker 1: on this region Sonora, and as you guys know, and
- 52:00Speaker 1: for those who don't like there's cactus and big things
- 52:06Speaker 1: with needles and nettles and really thick brush everywhere. Um,
- 52:10Speaker 1: but it's pretty darn open on this ridge because and
- 52:12Speaker 1: there's cow crap everywhere, like domestic cattle crap everywhere. And
- 52:17Speaker 1: Lakada says, he's like, man, I'd love to see this
- 52:20Speaker 1: place without the cattle and see what would be like
- 52:25Speaker 1: so you'd be back to But I was like, man,
- 52:29Speaker 1: looking at this place, I would almost guarantee you there's
- 52:32Speaker 1: no possible way we could walk on this ridge of
- 52:34Speaker 1: line if there were no cattle, because those cattle are
- 52:38Speaker 1: the reason that this area is opening up, opened up
- 52:41Speaker 1: enough for us to cruise through here. And it's probably
- 52:45Speaker 1: to a degree, you know, letting in enough sunlight to
- 52:48Speaker 1: grow grass and stuff like that. And if you went
- 52:50Speaker 1: back to the mid hundreds or whatever to be as
- 52:53Speaker 1: far back as you have to go to get pre cattle,
- 52:55Speaker 1: because you know, the cattle ban running there since since
- 52:58Speaker 1: the fift hundreds, Um, there was probably a hell of
- 53:02Speaker 1: a lot more larger befores on the ground. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:05Speaker 1: I would. Yeah, I would think I'm kind of becoming
- 53:09Speaker 1: like the older I get, the more I'm becoming kind
- 53:11Speaker 1: of like a cattle apologist. Man. I found myself being
- 53:14Speaker 1: a cattle apologist. The other day, it was driving down
- 53:18Speaker 1: the road in front of my man the sure destroyed
- 53:20Speaker 1: the river banks, and I was just thinking, maybe, yeah,
- 53:25Speaker 1: but I mean we keep talking about I mean, I
- 53:27Speaker 1: know they did. They had like more of a rotational
- 53:29Speaker 1: and migrated and all that, but like buffalo around the
- 53:33Speaker 1: river banks, they pound it and then they'd be gone
- 53:36Speaker 1: for a year or whatever. But I just like, I
- 53:38Speaker 1: don't know that the whole I don't know that the
- 53:41Speaker 1: whole answer to solving all of our problems. If it
- 53:44Speaker 1: was just we just got rid of the cat, we
- 53:47Speaker 1: just have a whole bunch of more houses. Yeah, well,
- 53:49Speaker 1: I mean yeah, good, well grazed ground. You know it
- 53:53Speaker 1: was great for a ton of different bird species. You
- 53:58Speaker 1: gotta have those different heights of grass for um invertebrate life,
- 54:04Speaker 1: which is important for the poults. Then, you know, we
- 54:09Speaker 1: just like to think of things so in such a
- 54:12Speaker 1: binary way. Exactly. Well, it's with cattle or without you,
- 54:15Speaker 1: with guy or without guy, because you go to places
- 54:17Speaker 1: that are just new to you go a place that
- 54:19Speaker 1: they are way over grazed. Um. Yeah, it can be
- 54:24Speaker 1: like there's like people who make mistakes or bad actors.
- 54:27Speaker 1: But there's also people who you know, run cattle like
- 54:30Speaker 1: very responsibly and and and it's not is some people
- 54:34Speaker 1: would let you believe that. It's just like if it
- 54:36Speaker 1: was only we can only get rid of cattle, it
- 54:38Speaker 1: would be like the earth would blossom. You know. I
- 54:41Speaker 1: think it's a little bit too simplistic. I agree. Ah.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I remember being out with a guy one time. He
- 54:48Speaker 1: used to do uh, he used to do He used
- 54:51Speaker 1: to run lease programs from BLM. And we're up in
- 54:54Speaker 1: a elk Meadal and he was saying, if if I
- 54:56Speaker 1: got called up here and cattle had done what these
- 55:00Speaker 1: helk done, Because if I got called up here in
- 55:02Speaker 1: cattle done this, I'd had to have a talk with
- 55:03Speaker 1: this guy. It's like that bombed out that bombed out
- 55:08Speaker 1: by must have been a good spot. It was just
- 55:11Speaker 1: spot ready going in calf, you know, and it's hundreds
- 55:14Speaker 1: of them hanging out in there, just yeah pawed up.
- 55:17Speaker 1: And you know he was, I mean, he's making a joke,
- 55:19Speaker 1: but you get you get the point of the joke. Yeah,
- 55:22Speaker 1: Where I don't get where it is extremely bad. It's
- 55:24Speaker 1: like right now it's going on in South America where
- 55:26Speaker 1: they're just chopping large chunks of the rainforest to make
- 55:31Speaker 1: land for cattle to graze on. That's problematic in a
- 55:36Speaker 1: whole bunch of levels. But yeah, I mean that's the
- 55:39Speaker 1: thing though, Right, It's like, do you want cattle? You
- 55:41Speaker 1: don't want cattle? Well, I want well managed cattle. Is
- 55:45Speaker 1: that an option? Nope, it's not an option. It's all none.
- 55:50Speaker 1: It's kind of a move point because there's no world
- 55:52Speaker 1: in which we're not going to have cattle, right, So
- 55:55Speaker 1: oh yeah, it's like, like, well, let's go back. Can
- 55:58Speaker 1: you imagine this place before? Man, It's like nope, and
- 56:01Speaker 1: nobody else can, like didn't didn't exist for our Okay,
- 56:05Speaker 1: who's gonna grab the next question? I want to hear
- 56:10Speaker 1: your guys thoughts on the how safe is it to
- 56:12Speaker 1: eat raccoons? I I highlighted that one, and not because
- 56:17Speaker 1: I know how safe it is to eat raccoons, but
- 56:20Speaker 1: I was talking a little bit with Clay Nukem about it,
- 56:24Speaker 1: and uh, He's explained to me that there are like
- 56:27Speaker 1: if you're worried about I think a lot of people
- 56:28Speaker 1: are scared of raccoons and eating raccoons because they show
- 56:32Speaker 1: shape them with dumpster diving, where raccoon in the wild
- 56:37Speaker 1: is not really the dumpster diver that say, he's not
- 56:41Speaker 1: a scavenger for the most part. Who cares if he is? Well,
- 56:46Speaker 1: I think that scavengers tend to taste worse because they're
- 56:49Speaker 1: eating rotten meat. You know. Yeah, well, like for instance,
- 56:55Speaker 1: for him, buddy mine on his wall has this huge
- 57:00Speaker 1: pig skull and he's a California guy and he's like that,
- 57:04Speaker 1: and I'm like, wow, that's a big pig skull. Where
- 57:08Speaker 1: did you get that? Thinking it'd be like Texas or something.
- 57:10Speaker 1: It's got a big tuss. He's like, that's a California pig.
- 57:13Speaker 1: He's like, that's the biggest California pig I've ever ever gotten.
- 57:18Speaker 1: And uh I was like, oh, yeah, what's the story
- 57:21Speaker 1: on that. It's like, well, uh, not much. I came
- 57:25Speaker 1: around the corner, it was head down feeding, jumped out
- 57:29Speaker 1: shot it went up there, and it was faced down
- 57:33Speaker 1: in a pile of dirty diapers. And he did not
- 57:40Speaker 1: eat that pig. Yeah like that okay, that kind of
- 57:43Speaker 1: dumpster diving shirt. Uh yeah, I've at raccoon. I don't know.
- 57:49Speaker 1: It's just like it's like a we just cooked it
- 57:51Speaker 1: every which way. Imaginable. Um, I think the only legitimate
- 57:57Speaker 1: health concern would be I think that they not thinking
- 58:00Speaker 1: they'd be tricking noses carriers. What about rabies? They are
- 58:04Speaker 1: known can get rabies from meat in the meat, if
- 58:08Speaker 1: you cook it. Yeah, I think that's a lot of
- 58:12Speaker 1: people's worried though. I think a lot of people associate
- 58:15Speaker 1: raccoons with rabies. You want to let me tell you something.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Check this out in our book we're doing um our
- 58:23Speaker 1: wilderness skills, Our wilderness Skills and survival book that we're doing. Yeah,
- 58:28Speaker 1: me and Brody writer's cramp? Do I have writer's cramp?
- 58:34Speaker 1: Dude hammering? Hammering? Anyways, check this out. This is in
- 58:38Speaker 1: our book. Se of the rabies cases in this country
- 58:42Speaker 1: come from what critter? Domestic cats, skunks, rats that globally
- 58:53Speaker 1: guess what percent? Guess what percent comes from dogs globally? Oh, globally,
- 59:01Speaker 1: way over of rabies cases are attributed to domestic dogs
- 59:05Speaker 1: in the US, because we treat the ship out of dogs, bats, raccoons, foxes,
- 59:13Speaker 1: and offer high up. The CDC is saying that, um,
- 59:18Speaker 1: you can't get it from non bite exposures like scratches, abrasions,
- 59:22Speaker 1: are open wounds that are exposed to salive or or
- 59:24Speaker 1: other potentially infectious material from a rabid animal. Other types
- 59:29Speaker 1: of context, such is petting um coming in contact with
- 59:33Speaker 1: blood urine her feces of a rabid animal are not
- 59:36Speaker 1: associated with risk for infection. So I think that eating
- 59:40Speaker 1: the meat would fall under the ladder. Yeah, because it's bacteria,
- 59:43Speaker 1: you're gonna cook it. Virus But yeah, I'm sorry, you're
- 59:47Speaker 1: gonna cook it. Yeah, Um, yes, they don't go messed
- 59:53Speaker 1: around in the raccoon's mouth. Yeah, so you got the
- 59:59Speaker 1: chance tricking else has got the chance of getting rabies
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: from handling raccoons. But once you cook him, I think
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: you're fine. But when we cooked to make it good,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: we did it every which way. We had Bo Jackson
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: on this show, like the athlete, famous athlete. He talks
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: about he's got he's got good record raccoon recipes. Clay
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: knucom spelled Newcomb but pronounced nukemb um Clay nukelem. How's
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: how's Clay cook him? Uh? You know, I don't think
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: he's done. He's eating it too much. I think he
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: was telling us that for the first time. Another fellow
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: that he's been hanging with came over and made some
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: uh you like this street tacos out of that raccoon
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: d tacos for him and uh he said it was delicious.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: So I think some sort of a bras ing. Yeah,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: you know, it's probably similar to black bear, I'm sure man.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: When we when we had it, we braised it. I
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: think we braised it then grilled. It's braised to get
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: it tender. When I get my first coun I'm definitely
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: eating that thing. Oh yeah. And the old day is
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: like an old book. It's people are eyes soaking it
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: in vinegar and then cooking it. It's like in the
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: old days you take your dog out for raccoons. Is
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: that where you're you're fixing on? Maybe I need to
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: start getting them after something. There are quite if I've
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: been seeing a lot of raccoons on this streets dead
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: around here lately. I've I've seen that too. I know
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: it's a yeah yeah yeah, but no, I was gonna
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: go down and chase them with clay and newcom Arkansas.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Very cool. Next, get ready for the next. One. Best
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: way to cook small mouth bass. I think the best
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: way to cook smallmouth bass is to make a sandwich
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: out of it. A fish sandwich, like how they make
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: down floor it everywhere you take the fish, you flay
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: the fish, get the flayoff, skin the flay, and then
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: you do John Gary's signature zipper pinbone removal technique, which
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: I think we talked about one of our books. I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: can't really explain it. Over there, picture you got a
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: small mouth of flay land there. It's skinned, but skin
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: side up, so what would be the skin side up?
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: And you feel in the middle of the flay running
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: like laterally you'll feel that little line of pinbones running
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: down there. You get to the end of that little
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: so you move from the front part of the flay
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: towards the tail and you feel that little line of
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: pin bones ends. Then you caught a little V through
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: the flay right at that point, and then you grab
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: it like you're opening a zipper, and that little that
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: little V tab is your zipper pole and you grab that.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: You see me do this, yeh, because it works on
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: rock fish too. You grab that and pull it like
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: you're opening the zipper, and all those pinbones come out connected.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Then it's the perfect sandwich size. You get a hoggie
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: roll that's like the exact same size as your small mouth,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: and you bread and fry that flay and you put
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: it on your hoggie roll with um pickles, onion, lettuce.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Saracha is am I saying that right? Yeah, saracha sounds great.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: We used to not do that. We used to put
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: mayo and stuff on it, but then I got it
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: to putting the sarach on it. Man's a good sandwich.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: We we had it. We Matt Elliott, who you know,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: competitive uh bass fisherman? What do you call it when
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: you call him? Not quite pro amateur competitive bass angler?
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Like small mouth specialist, And we went small mouth fishing,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: and that's some much should never eat in a small mouth.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: We made him a sandwich. He enjoyed it. He said
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: he didn't want his wife to eat one of those
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: sandwiches because she would wonder what he'd been doing all
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: that time, letting all those small mouths go. Another term
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: that you love on the half shell. No, I like
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: him because all I'm doing is not I'm just de
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: scaling the filet. So you take take your filet, throw
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: that thing. I put a little salt on there and
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: just put it on indirect heat on the barbecue and
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: in a about six minutes. You can grab that thing
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: and hook your thumbnail into the flat, into the skin, sorry,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: into the skin, and give it a shake, and that
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: whole side of meat will just slide right off the skin,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: right onto your plate, and it is beautiful and delicious.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: My childhood fishing mentor would cook large mouth bass flays
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: that way. I've eaten one large mouth. He would soak.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: He'd take the skin off, solk it and milk. Not nice. Sorry,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: leave the skin on, take the flay off, leave the
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: skin on, soak it in the bath of milk, which
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: is a big thing where I grew up putting stuff
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: in milk all the time. Then grill it. Yeah, what
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: is I know There's been articles and stuff written, but
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I've never dunked anything. I feel I don't. It's like
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: it's hard to explain. This is supposed to like pull
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: blood out of that. I feel that it did. It
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: diminishes if you gotta fish. It has like a muddy,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: weedy kind of taste. I'd hate to go up in
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: front of like a scientific committee on this or something,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: or like clastify the Congress about it, but I feel
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: that it takes the muddy weedingness away. From stuff there.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I just said it. I feel as though that's true,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: and what I feel is all that matters. If I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: feel that it's true, it must be. I'm sure it
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: helps when you're like, well, I just committed a half
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: gallon of milk to this, so something's gonna happen. Okay,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: here's a great question. No one's gonna know the answer
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: to this, but we can speculate on it. Can you
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: trap Burmese pythons with three three kind of bears? I'm
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: not on this one. Uh yeah, I think that you'd
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: run into a lot of problems of to use. Okay,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: in setting three thirty conno bears, you are needing to channel.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: You're either needing to like read sign real good, so
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: you know right where that animal you're trying to catch
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: is going. The thing most commonly caught with three thirties,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: using for wolverines and whatnot, but mostly people catch beavers
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: with three thirties, and beavers really tell you where they
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: want to go by the sign they leave. They dig canals,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: they have runs, they have entrance ways into their lodges,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: all these ways in which you can look and be like, man,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: the beaver's gonna go here for sure, and you set
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the three three there and low and behold he passes
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: through there and you got them. I don't know how
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: you would channel or funnel a python live bait, put
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: a little rabbit or a mouse inside a cage, and
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: or maybe get some pheromone, because you know those males
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: are hunting the females. You're not gonna catch him behind
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: the behind the ears. That's the other thing is you
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: might It might just it might just not be. It's
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: gotta I think it's got to be the right side python.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I feel like a lot would go right through a
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: three if you had so when you're setting a three thirty,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: a lot of guys want to set you said it
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: so that the triggers around the bottom facing up, not
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: up facing down. But if there's any kind of current
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: or whatever now and then you gotta put it triggers
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: facing down because the current trip it. But all all
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: things equal, people like to put the triggers on the
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: bottom so that then it don't mess the hair up
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: when the when the trigger components are against its back
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: after it gets sprung. I think with a python, you
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: don't want to do like you want to position the triggers,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: like you're doing an otter proof set where the triggers
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: are bent low so anything can pass through triggers on
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: the bottom. So he just crawls over and snacks it.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: But I feel like, man, I don't know if you
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: hold onto him, I don't know, he might just sliver
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: around out of there. I don't know. I think you'd
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: hold onto him, and just I don't know if I
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: wonder if he'd probably still be alive when you got there. Yes, absolutely.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: And the problem is you miss a set on a
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: python that while the old bugger you'll never catching again,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: you'll get traps, trap shot, trap shot on you. Besides
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: boots and optics. What is the one thing not to
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: cheap out on for a Western hunt pack? Mm hmm, okay, yep,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Well I thought about that earlier when I read read
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the question, because I was thinking, Man, if you do
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: get something down, you don't get something down if you're
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: actually going and packing in, if you're gonna do like
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: say you're gonna carry more than thirty forty pounds, you
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: can pack in overnight. Boy, an ill fitting pack is
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: can really make ship out of your time out there.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: You don't jumped at me when I saw it. What
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I got to thinking about, um, sleeping bags that too,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: was a lot of people always getting all cold, man,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: sure cold, and then to show up with a ten
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: pound bag, which you know, out of your forty pounds,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: boy you are, it's a quarter of your weight. People
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: getting cold and people have an enormous bags. What you
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: get when you spend money on a good bag is
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: you want a good, super puffy bag that's lightweight and
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: scrunches up. And that takes money. I don't I don't
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: know enough about sleeping bag manufacturing to understand why. But
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: that takes money. That takes a lot of money. You
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: can make a big, giant bag that doesn't poof up
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: and it's warm. You make a real cold little bag
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: that does poof up this warm, but a big but
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: a warm bag that puckers up blows up like a
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: damn balloon, costs a lot of money. Yeah, I explain
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: to you, if you please. I love to explain the
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: other thing to me. And I finally sunk in Yeah
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: in another year, so you'll understand sleep high and sleeping bags. Um,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: what makes them light and small and expensive is that
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: the quality of the down the higher the quality is
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: going to cost more on what you get in. The
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: higher quality is that what actually keeps you warm and
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: down is it's loft, which basically makes an insulating layer
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: around your body. Right. Well, the higher the quality of
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: the down, the less it takes to make that insulating layer.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: So you can weigh it and have a half a
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: pound of bad down in in uh in one container,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: and then a half pound of good down another container,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: and that good down will be however much better it is,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: it will be three or four times as fluffy, so
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: thus creating more loft and more of an insulating layer.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Are you tracking now? Also, you need to have a
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: lightweight outer material because if your material is too heavy
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: on lightweight down, it could actually crush it and crush
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: that insulating you know, could that you're trying to make
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: around you. So you gotta have some lightweight material that
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: is also um tough. It's lightweight and not tough, and
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: you're gonna have a big hole in your down bag
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and down it's gonna be everywhere, and that doesn't make
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: for a good insulating layer. We're uh. That was a
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: great explanation. Where how did you where did you get
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: trained up on talking sleeping bags, no time against sports
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: and Edwards Colorado. Right when I worked retail, when you
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: were a salesman sold some sleeping bags, that was a
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: great description. I feel like that down a nice down
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: sleeping bag. Two needs to be paired with a nice
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: insulated pad sleeping pad because you can press that down
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: on your back. You gotta have a good pad. You
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: gotta have a good our value pad. But is that
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: like absolutely? I mean, this person wants a need, like
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: what is the the next thing? What is the I
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: don't know why he why it has be the one thing,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: but it's like, what is the one thing? And I
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: don't want to hijack the whole conversation to have be
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: sleeping bags. But I want to point one more thing
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: out about sleeping bags because I keep seeing people making
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: this mistake. The ratings like sleeping bags come with a
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: rating about temperature ratings, and I'm not sure there's a
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: competing rating systems, but a lot of these rating systems
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: are not comfort. They give it like a survival rating,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: meaning if it's zero degrees, you won't die, but you're
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: gonna lay there all night freezing your hand. So I
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: think now on the tags they've actually started doing like
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: three different sort of like settings like that, explaining it
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: be like you can survive down to this temp. Most
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: people will be comfortable at this temp and you'll be
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: great at this temper. That's that's helpful. Yeah, I man, I,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I mean we live in the far North, we're in
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: the northern tier state, but travel or damn place. Uh.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: If I was gonna buy a bag and just have
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: it be my bag, I would It'd be hard to
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: talk me out of not getting a zero or like
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: a ten degree egg. Just versatile, absolutely, And if you
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: buy a real good one and it pooches up anyways,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: suckers up, pooches up what I trying to say, it
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: compresses well, Uh, it's just you just kind of don't
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: zip it or do zip it. But just like if
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: you're gonna have one bag land around, I would get
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: a way way colder bags. And you think you need, okay,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: other stuff, you can't, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: go full on about something you can't. You can't you
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: can't what's the word that he uses here. You can't
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: cheap out one thing. You can't cheap out on. It's
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: not counting what is shooting iron. What does he not
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: want to cheap boots and Vinos, sleeping bag boots, Vinos.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: The clothing, Yeah, define cheap out. Well. Like when I
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: first started hunting out West, I was wearing like car
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: heart pants and ship like that, and I got by.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: But man, when you got wet, it sucked just walking
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: around and sucked. You know, it takes all the hair
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: off your legs. It's heavy, you know. And plenty of
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: people still hunting jeans and you know, yeah, whatever jacket
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: they can grab. But it's great till you get soaked.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Got it once you once you start using good clothes,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: it's like you could never go back. It's hard to
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: go back lightweight clothes. Yeah, so much of this stuff. Man,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: when you make the jump that you thought you would
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: never make, I never. I don't need that you finally do.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: You're like, I am an idiot. I'm not gonna tell anybody,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: but I cannot believe I didn't do this ten years ago. Yeah.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I remember when I gave up on gas station coffee,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the same thing. Man. After a while, I was like, man,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: I shouldn't have done that, because now it's hard to
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: go back to gas station coffee yes, sir, like hot
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: coffee flavored. It's like, yeah, that's the only problem with
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: this is probably not bad coffee. They just don't put
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: enough grounds and don't put enough in there. So yeah,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: I'm burns your lips and it just tastes like hot water.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, I'm gonna go sleeping bag as well. Um,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: but no, that you're just going down a path and
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: this is not the last thing you need. Eventually, he
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: will cross across the rubicon and yet another purchase that
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: you didn't think you'd need. Yeah, because good stuff is fun.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: People are always like, oh, so you're saying you need
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: to this and that and this and that and this
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: and that to go do that. I'm like, no, it's nice.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: Helps it makes me enjoy my time out there. Yeah,
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: you spend more time hunting, you know. I mean, there's
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: plenty of dude still plowing Alaska in blue jeans, but man,
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: there's been a lot more time drying out in front
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: of a campfire to where you know you don't have
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: to do that if you've got the right gear. I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: got a little pour over coffee thing that's foldable and
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: it clips on your cup and it's just a wash
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: out filter, you know what, it are stupid And man,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I was like this is stupid. And Garrett Smith has
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: one and he's like, oh, you gotta get one of these,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: cow I gotta get one of these. And I was
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: like rolling over in the truck four am, fire up
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: the stove, a little poor over coffee, reaching the cooler,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: grabs from half and half. It's just a nice way
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: to start a turkey hunt. But here's the thing. Once
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: it's cold out, when it's like sub freezing and you've
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: taken all that coffee water and let it drip, let
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: it fall dripped by drip through the air, you just
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: got yourself a cold that's a cup of coffee. We
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: got onto some of those things that started messing around
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: with them, and it was bad weather to do it in.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: But it was like it was like there was no
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: way to have a hot cup of coffee unless you
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: reheated it with just a standard like a poor over.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: We had these little envelopes. There's these little envelopes of
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: like camp drip and it came in a little like
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: disposable deely smack and you poured into go and you
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: just watch those drips. They just like they shed their heat.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: We uh like if I used the poor Over and
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Instant both, but I'm like, Okay, the weekend, it's gonna
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: be like this temperature in the morning. Like I'm bringing
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: Instant this bag and drip over. It's like, oh, it's
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: gonna be warm. I'll go with the poor Over when
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: you pick, when you go into your pantry and you're
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: packing your coffee, you go and have check weather dot
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: com to find out what coffee to bring anywhere. Yeah,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: we checked the other anyway. Yeah, we have been like, oh,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: you know, it's going to be too cold for poor
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Over And it's just like the standard little black V
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: that sits on top of the cup with the filter
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: in it and you put some grounds in it. That
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: gets your coffee too cold if it's oh yeah, because
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: falling through the air and being exposed. I just kind
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: of but I'm telling you an objective reality, man, But
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: I I just feel like I've had different experiences. Ours
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: just drips a lot faster. I guess, weren't you with me?
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Well maybe, but I don't know. Yours might be a
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: different system. But we just have like a standard V. Yeah,
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I just have the standard V that sits right on
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: top of the yet like you buy it on the
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: water through there and you don't have a cup of
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: this was made. This was like made, and I know
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: yours just something different. I understanding your sucks and doesn't work.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: I'm saying that mine might work. Still maybe not a
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: zero I think it would work at twenty ed tumbler.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Yeahs don't cheap out on how you make coffee, I guess,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: or does quit drinking coffee. You don't have to worry
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: about it. Call just texted me a nice grip and
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: grim of turkey. Thanks l What what what turkey is that?
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: What are you talking about? It's got a Miriam's tail
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: fan Okay, So on one side of the road, I
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: shot this bird this morning, white white tail. Yeah. Mirriams
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: have a lot of areas, and then on the other
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: side of the road it's like chocolate brown. I don't
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: think it's the road doing that. I don't think. I think,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: especially in Montana, where there's been a lot of um
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: bucket biology with turkeys going on, there's probably a lot
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: of hybridization. I think that. Sure. True, Miriam's are a
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: little bit wider, you know, snow white tipped, But um,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: I mean hack where we hunted in Nebraska. I've got
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: all kinds of grips of guys with shooting out of
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: the same flock, calling in three four dollars and everybody
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: you know cracks one and there's four dudes lined up
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: and every fan looks different. Okay, calm this picture. I
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: know you're shooting at uh that venom, that vortex red dot.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: Yes you like that thing? I am. Yeah, I do,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I do, I do. Just once you start, you'll never
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: go back. I haven't, you know, I think about I
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: keep thinking about doing it, but I haven't done. It
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: slows I first. I was like, it's gonna slow me
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: down a little bit, and maybe it has, but um
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: I feel like speed yet. Ye man, I really really
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: liked it. I go, I gotta tweak my mounts a
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: little bit. But I picked you one up to you
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: think about making the jump. What I did is I
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: took that eighteen nine though and took a few inches out,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: took a few inches off, and put an iron sight
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: on there. You know I'm going to see that customization customized,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: sawed it off nice and short. Yeah, man, oh, here's
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: a good one. How come you don't bleed your game
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: out after a kill because a bad shot and stressed
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the animal out and make it taste bad. Tell me
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: that's two questions, correct, it is how come you don't?
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Let's start with how come you don't bleed your game
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: out after a kill? Because the bullet bleeds it up.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: If all goes well your shot, if it's like the
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: next shot and it's still alive, I would go do it,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: would yeah, because it hasn't bled and it's heart still pumping.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: But if it's if you go up there and it's
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: shot through the lungs, all the bloods out anyway, and
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: it's heart's not pumping anymore. So if you made a
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: high shoulder shot which most likely didn't clip the lungs,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: just you know, busted his spine and he's dead but
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: still pumping, yea, and slice his neck. I mean, if
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: I like remember to do it, I would do it
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: for sure. I've never done it. Yeah, I've never done
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: the next slice I like when an animal and open
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: up means every drop blood that things ever gonna have
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: laying inside the chest cavity, it's already bled. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe that this question is related to
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: shoot him in the head or something. Head shot guys bleed,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: But you gotta hustle. You gotta get there quick. Yeah,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: you gotta hustle like bleeding, Like you catch fish over
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: the cool, let it die and cut its gill, nothing
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: to push the blood out, yea ron late. Let's say
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: remember that, you know from the documentary, man, as soon
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: as he touches that trigger, he's just like sprinting towards
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: He's a head shooter, unrepentant head shooter. Man. I'm reading
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: a book right now about game Warden in Idaho and
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: he's undercover work hanging out with a bunch of poachers,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: and the way he describes it like it is an
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: act of God that these poachers ever get caught, like
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: just and it's just so simple too. It's just you know,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: twenty twos and to forty three's and two three small
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: small calibery stuff all had shots and stuff just in
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: its tracks in the brush, ten ft off road, busy
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: like paved roads, stuff like like just slick, yeah, just fast.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Wells Part two, Ynny does a bad shot stress the
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: animal out and make it taste bad. I think so.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: I can't help I think so. And the reason I
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: think so is because uh, I feel that I have
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: a lot of like, um, what's it called like when
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: you're aread, he tells you something, you know what I'm
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: trying to say, second hand info? Yeah, anecdotal, but I
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: have a lot of anecdotal thoughts, anecdotal evidence. But it's
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: also it's a big thing in the meat cutting into
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: It's like professional slaughters pay attention to this. They pay
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: a ton of attention to stress. They're not whistling Dixie.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: I mean, they're like as their business and they're put
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: an enormous amount of energy into reducing stress. But you
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: know what my question is about that is that and
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: I know they are doing that, but aren't they A
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: lot of it just comes from like animal ethics there
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: doesn't It comes there wanting not wanting what you call
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: it red cutter. I'm sure there's an ethics component to
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: it too, But remember that remember that that famous animal
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: behaviorist Grant temp Temp Temple grand and Temple Granding. They
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: brought her into work on all that like reducing stress
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: and slaughterhouses and a lot of it. I mean, there's
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: an ethics component to it, but a lot of it
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: had to do with quality product, better products. Yeah, if
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: it was just ethics, they wouldn't shock them after they
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: bolted him in the head, right, Yeah, they didn't want
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: them stressed because of I think it increases the chance
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: of getting a red cutter, which is like a like
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: a discarded or like greatly reduced piece of meat. But
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: it's like a widely held thing that's always told that
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: you're always told that it's true. And I have some
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: cases where I think you could have a stressed out
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: am and have it be good just because like just
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: just because there's always very ability and everything. But I've
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: had enough situations where you've had stuff to be like
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: extremely tough off tasting, and there's like and you're like, man,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: you know what, like there was something you know, and
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: you look and you'd be like, yeah, you can't rule
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: out there was like a not clean kill. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: What's the best position to poop in the woods? That's
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: a great question, he says, Squat leaning to get this
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: multiple choice, squat lean against a tree, sit across two logs,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: sit across two logs, et cetera. Yeah, that would be
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: like basically making you know, the toilet seat the trin
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: you know what I ever thought to do is take
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: two logs. This is a good idea. Take two logs
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: running parallel, but sit parallel with those logs so there's
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: a gap between them, so that the support wasn't running
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: cross cheek, it was running with cheek, each cheek on
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: its own support. My experience, the more yes, the more
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: word trouble, you're gonna have. Oh, I don't believe in
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: doing that. It's just something I hadn't thought of before,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: and now I'm curious about it. I think a lot
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: of it has to do with your agility and physical
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: fitness and things like that. Like, yes, because the squat
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: is not easy for a lot of people. I hang
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: out a lot of a lot of like kind of
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: wiry wirre you little mugs, And I think that, um,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: among like why are you little mugs? I think that
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: the squat is like I don't even need to do
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: a handhold. No, No, I don't hand hold no. But
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: I feel like when I was younger, my daughter I
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: have to hand hold her. Yeah, you know, my daughters
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: just finally grew out of that. Man. They can just
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: drop it and go anywhere. Nothing on their shoes anymore.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: They keep their pants clear. It's wondering. My wife makes
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: our daughter when she's peeing, she makes her get way
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: back like handholding. You get way back, like a deep, deep,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: far lean back, because otherwise you gotta have four pairs
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: of action underwear and pant tights with you. But I
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: saw somewhere I won't even say it was maybe on
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: one of your postcal recently we're laying, Tani commented about
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: something about like a tree tether that's made for pooping. Yeah,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: because I was gonna say when I think, I feel
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: like when I first started pooping in the woods more
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: probably in my late teens early twenties, for some reason
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: in my head, I thought that it was always going
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: to be better if I, like I would always look
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: for that perfect tree that could, you know, hook around
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: and lean away and get it. And now I guess
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: they've made a product it makes that easier. You know,
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: I don't need it, And that's not a product you
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: needed to buy. No, land has like a doubled up
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: belt or something that they can whip around a tree
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and lean back into. It's just like bearing down and
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: getting some leverage or what like. I don't I think
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: maybe a little stress reduce around the knees and I
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: don't know, some some sort of comfort sounds complicated. Yeah,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: I've done, and when that strap breaks, you're going to
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: be in a world poop. I've done the you know,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: in situations, I might do the limb grab, tree grab,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: limb grab, but Jaily not to walk you through the
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: whole process, please, Well, there's a couple of things. I
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: think that I'm more interested and responsible responsible pooping, not
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: just clean, clean woods pooping, but responsible woods pooping. And
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: we just came out of an area west of here
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: where it is the tree shootingness woods shitness service. Man.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I don't think i'd ever had even seen tree shooting
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: until all this. Yeah, in western Montana, it's become a
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: thing where you show up and try to blow and
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: sometimes successfully gradually blow over ponderosa pines by just shooting
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: them to the point where they had The fourth service
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: has signs up say you can't shoot the trees. I
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: don't get it, like decent sized trees too. No, we're
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: talking trees like we're talking Diana. And meanwhile the same
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: people are surface shitting. Well, yeah, I'd have a little
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: talk with one of our crew members. Not going to
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: mention any names, but I think that Steve likes. I
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: don't know if you coined the term, if it's been
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: around forever. I had never used it. But the pist zone, no,
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I'm colling that that's about Mexico. When you leave the
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: group to go off down the hill, we're up the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: hill river, you say, I'm gonna flip a rock. Yeah,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: that's just the first thing I'm gonna do. Yeah. Well,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: I think that maybe some people have taken this to
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: mean that that's all you have to do, is like
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: take a rock to walk over somewhere else and go, well,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: take a right on the surface and then just flip
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: a rock on top sand. That's like a last resort
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: if you can't take a hole. Because what I like
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: to do is I like to find a rock that's
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: buried so far into the ground and when you lifted out,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the perfect six inch hole is there, and then you
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: put the rock back on the top stomach. Just here.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: The perfect rock is just making me want to go
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: off in the wood. What I'm proud of is when
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I walk away, I'm like, if anybody else came through here,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: they would not know where I hid. I like the
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: kind of rock where you go up. This is considering
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: you got rocky grounds. We'll start a rocky ground. I
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: like to kind of rock where you go up and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: you think, no way, I'm gonna move that rock. But
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: then you give it a pole and there's some give
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: and you pull and it pops out and there's like
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: some some rolie polies and centipedes and a big ant
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: nest like and then you do your thing in there
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: and you're like an Egyptian bricklayer man and you put
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: that block back down in that little slot. But it's
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: such a deep hole in big rock that you don't
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: even get like the like you don't even get like
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: where you squish it oreo, right, and the stuffing comes
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: up out. It's just like it's just like but but
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: it's just yeah, then it's like entombed. That's what I like.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: First I heard somewhere somehow right true. Yeah, it came
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: up on Ben's podcast that I had never crapped in
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: the woods. Well how would you do hold it the
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: whole time? Well? I laban plug Well, I mean I
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: know that is no I tell't please explain. Yeah, he's
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: he's he is the laban. I don't know if it's
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: necessarily has anything to do with my heritage. It hasn't.
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: Oh sorry. When I travel, yeah, which is all the time,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: I tend to get a little constipated, and sometimes it
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: can take two three. I don't know if I've ever
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: made it four full days. Um, where you have a plug?
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: So to speak? Um, I tell you you don't. You've
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: never felt as good as those seconds and minutes following
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: getting rid of that place? Is that that Latvian plug?
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Exasperated by the mountain house? No? No, house doesn't give
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: you a plug. No. I think it's just I don't
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: know really what causes it, but it just I don't know.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: I try to drink a lot of water. I'm guessing
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: that's walking onto a plane. I know that's what it does.
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: It do it to YouTube, Seth. You get a little
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: bit of it, don't you? From the airplane plug? Yeah? Yeah,
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: do twenty three? See if you're leve I don't. I
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: don't get as bad as Johnny, but I'll have like
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: a day go by them like something's not right? What
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: is your what is your heritage? I'm kind of all
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: over the board. Not a whole lot of pizzas in
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: the name Morrise go ahead, Phil, you never put in
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: the woods there you are. Yeah. So I told Ben, well,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna go for a long haick this weekend and
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: if the nature calls, I'll try it. I'll try it out,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: I'll sample it. And uh so, you know, I packed
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff just in case, like a bunch
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: of stuff, A couple of gallons size ziplog bags, roll
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: of toilet papers, some sanitizing wipes. You know what we're
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: gonna do with the galleon size zip blocks for the
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: wipes and the toilet paper. It's like, can double zip
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: it and so it doesn't, you know, bring it home, take,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you know, pack out, keeping it dry. Yeah. Sure, but
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: that's it for your bunch of stuff. Yes, And so
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: i'm you know, I'm I'm a few hours into this
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: hike and I don't really have to, but I was like,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: I tried. I promised Ben i'd try. God damn it.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: And so I go way off and it's like I
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: can just see where I was walking and keep an
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: eye on it, and I take care of business and
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I bury it. And then immediately I hear a dog
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: caller and you know, oh, you don't have to tell
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: me because it happened, and so Tug sniff it out
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: immediately come sprinting. The couple's like looking for their dog.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: What is he doing? And then I'm standing there just
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: like pretending I'm on my phone, like hunting for treasure
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: or something I had. I had, but I just started
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: walking back to the superficial berry. Yeah, I mean, I
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: mean it was it was like, I don't know, like
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: three or four inches. I like it was. It was
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: really snowy too, was I just tried to pack some
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: snow on top of It's anything. People like to walk
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: away feeling they did something exactly. People do crazy little things.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: They'll take like a couple of like pine needles and
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: like put that on there and be like yeah, that's good. Yeah,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: well in anyway, so then I'm I'm like pretending I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: not noticing this dog, just like going to town on
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: my chip. But just man, I it was a bad
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: first experience. I'll tell your story, will curl your hair?
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Me and Ronnie Bam we're hunting snow geese one time,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: and we were on a little guided snow goose hunt.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: This is a good one. And the guide goes over
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: to the tree line and flips the rock. It takes
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: a growler, however you want to put it? Uh, and
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: then pretty soon as dogs over there eating it. But
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: we're in layout blinds, so your face is down on
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: the ground and the dog comes back over and wants
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: to run around licking everybody's face. Yeah, yeah, I almost
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: like I had to get Yeah, did not. Almost had
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: had an impulse that I didn't act on to shoot
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: the dog. Well, I mean I was. I was talking
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: to Mark Kennyan about it, and he's like, well, it
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: might have been the nice thing to go back and
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: explain to the couple which just happened, in case their
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: dog comes running back smelling like like shit. I couldn't
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: even imagine bringing myself to do that. Like that's tough conversation. Yeah,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: you're not gonna take it back, but I want to
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: walk through people a little bit more so. You got
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: the perfect rock, like the Egyptian brick layer scenario, the
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: perfect rock comes out of ground. If not also you
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: carry a little shovel or your heel. But I think
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: the key is prep in your area, Like prep your
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: area before you go, find out how you're gonna deal
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: with it before you go, like hours before. No, no,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: when you walk out, when you go off down the
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: hill or off the hill or whatever you do, go
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: over and don't like just go oh without considering how
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: what your plan is, because you want to drop it
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: in a good disposal location. So if you need to
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: dig a cat hole, you know or whatever, do that,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: then go. Don't go and then start wandering around trying
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: to use sticks and whatnot and making little tongs and stuff,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: trying to move it around where you need to put it.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: So do that dig a hole, if you dig a hole,
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: dig a deep hole, dig a head sized hole. Another
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: thing and other than this is my brother's trick. He
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: keeps a lighter in with his can't money, so can't
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: money being toilet paper, he keeps a lighter in there
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: and as he's going he doesn't let us if it's
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: raining out whatever, you don't let the TP get wet
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: as you're using it. So you're used t P. He'll
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: lay over a little limb or what have you, and
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: not letting get all balled ups and it doesn't want
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: to burn. Lay it nice, drape it nice over a
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: limb so it's well oxygenated. Then when you're done, you
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: pull your lighter out up in flames. Where that becomes
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: tricky is wet wipes. So what wipes don't want to burn?
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: You gotta come back the next day and burn them.
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: So I will carry and my kid, I got can't
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: money and this little disposable like not disposed when it's
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: a little single like this little can't money roll made
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: for campers. Then I carry with me, uh wet ones,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: single use wet ones. And if you feel like you
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: need to touch up to the single use wet one,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: open it, do your touch up, put the wet one
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: back in that thing, and then put that in your
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: ziplock bag inside your kit because you can't burn it.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: Then burn the sweep by and bury your cat hole.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: And I don't need to walk out and find the
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: ground littered with all your toilet paper. And this is
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: an important topic, which is the important topic now I
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: just gotta I think you did a masterful job of
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: describing that system, and folks should take that uh into mind.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: But also on the burning the TP side of things,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: the woods down. Yeah, And so there was a road
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: biker outside of Emma, Idaho, and I was heading up
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: to my buddy Jim's house to go h cook with
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: those guys and hang out. And I think it was
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: just to hang out session. This is Jim the bird Hunt.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: It's always cooking stuff. Yeah, and uh, I get this
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: phone call says, hey, Cal just got called out on
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: a fire. Uh the roads are closed, but just tell
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: them you're staying at my house. And uh, his wife
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: Nancy was like getting the animals together in case they
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: had to evacuate. And I come around the corner and
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: the whole damn mountains on fire. And so I go
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: up and hang out with Nancy and we're kind of
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: getting calls on fire and have a kind of an
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: evacuation plan for all their bird dogs and great dance
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: and stuff. And uh that fire was a road biker
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: who attempted to burn the toilet paper and got away
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: into the dry grasses of the blm there. Yeah, so
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: just keep that in mind. And like the ranch that
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: I was on this weekend, Uh, the fires roll through
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: their almost every year, and the folks that live out
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: there are hyper aware of fire, and I mean they
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: should be. It's just like that that country their day.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: I had a situation where I went off and uh
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: found a really interesting little spot. It's like, you know
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: what a tree falls over and leads kind of like
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: a half a stump. Oh my gosh, it must have
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: been multiple in the The stump had rotted out, so
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: there was actually like the splinters of the stump all
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: right standing there, all rotted. The stump had rotted and
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: left the cavity in the ground, so you're able to
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: actually back up to it right use that. I prepped
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: the whole little bit, dug excavate the hole out a
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: little bit, but actually use that existing hole. Then walk
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: back around and just boot the back end the half
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: of the stump that was up still, boot that over
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: to in tomb. No one's getting into there. That's perfect.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: Tipped it over and entombed the area, and then I
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: got up and jumped on it a couple of times.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: That is one clean dropping. The only way anything's gonna
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: get at is about coming up through the earth that
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: would be fossilized today someone's gonna find step back and
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: throw your hands on your hip. Glad. I was glad, satisfactory.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: It was like someone knew I was coming. One of
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: those moments it makes you confident in a higher being
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: because it was like someone was looking out for me.
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: I dropped one in the same kind of hole. But
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: I just kicked it fold dirt. I didn't kick the
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: stump on. You didn't back kick the stump down in
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: it perfect. I felt good about it. Time for one more.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: I think we can end on this one. Is there
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: anything else to add here? Because this is something that
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: just like, well, I'm only just I'm only saying I
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: was just really nice National Force, like nice National forest,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: and it was cool. They're doing like a lot of
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: work in that area, doing a lot of thinning, a
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: lot of controlled burns, like putting money into it to
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: make good habitat. It's marked, roads are marked, like everybody
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: doing all the stuff to make it like usable accessible signs.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: National Forests four miles like turn you know, like everything
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: everything that you could ask for, Like, oh, laid out right,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: everyone's done their job. And how what does that bring
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: out in people? I got it. Let's go shoot all
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: over and then shoot the trees till they fall over.
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: That like that sounds like like that's how we should
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: treat the National forest. I don't know who's paying for
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: all this. You are so disgusting, man, Yeah, taking up
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: a bunch of plastic and ship to shoot at we
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: came across the legos. Someone who brought those big you know,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: the child legos that are blows they're called. Someone brought
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: those up there and stuck them on a limb and
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: where and then left. Only hit it once that a
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: big lego structure with one bullet hole through it. You
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: didn't find any legos or toilet paper and your turkey's crop,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: did you? No? But everywhere you went, man, everywhere you went. Culturally,
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I don't know what's going on that little neck of
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: the woods. Oh, I think it's a case of a
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: few bad apples. Well, they get around, I'm sure they do,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: shooting trees down. I've a topped a few Christmas trees
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: in my day, the old old tan gage, if I'm
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: being honest, But this is actual. Almost took some videos,
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: but it was like, oh man, anyways, last one on
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: public land, and I don't second last one. I don't
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: see why you couldn't do this on private land. You
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: there might be just more fun because you'd probably be
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: hunting there with your buddies. Have you ever thought about
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: laying down false tracks slash signs to bamboozle other hunters
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: do the other day we talked about this. Yeah, it
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: takes a lot of work to be to be like
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: packing around an elk hoof or a deer hoof to
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: lay down that kind of a sign. I was just
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: gonna say, it seems like a lot of work with
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: Without that, you can lay down a scrape wouldn't be
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: too hard. A rob would take some serious Yeah, well
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: then you're not bamboozle. Yeah you are. You're getting them
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: to waste their time. Yeah, that's a great idea to
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: go make a little scrape, fake scrapes and put tracks
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: on them. H We talked. We were the guy the
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: other day that was saying back home what they would do.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: We're looking at turkey tracks in the road, and he says,
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: you would stomp out every one of these turkey tracks.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: That's right. And so he said, when they're rolling around,
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: they look for a bunch of stomping there. Now we uh,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: we used to on some public land that I used
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: to hunt. There was kind of a major trail. It
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: wasn't a heavily used trail by hikers, but it wasn't.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: It was a major trail. And there was a spot
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: where there it was a known elk crossing and there's
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: a lot of tracks there and near I just like
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: one time brought up some pecord and basically made like
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: a little broom out of some pine bowels or fur
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: bows more likely. And um, I would sweep those tracks
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: for two reasons. One, I wanted to see like how
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: quickly they got freshened up, you know, because if I
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: went through in the dark in the morning and came
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: back out at ten and there's fresh tracks, and I
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: have rough idea when they crossed through there. But to
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: also kick out, you know, to hide them from if
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: anybody else was hiking that trail. That's the thing I
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: like about the lion hunters that lion hunters do is
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: they like to brush out stuff all time, right um.
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: And then I noticed, like down in South America, some
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: of those guys like to a shout out the sandbars
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: just to wipe the slate clean, and he gives it
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: like a nice little texture to pick up tracks. But
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: we had a lion hunters like if you get like
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: whatever sandy patches and trails or a dry wash crossing
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: the road, they like to get out and those bring
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: a broom and broom it out so the next time
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: they know, like I was here, I broomed it out
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: on Monday. Af there's a track on Tuesday. I know
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: when that track got laid down. But that's different than
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: trying to bambooz with someone I know. I mean real
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: common one for western trailheads because I say Western trailhead
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: because that's where my experience is. Is like, if you're
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: hunting with four people, everybody drive your own vehicle, so
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: then there's four vehicles parked at the trailhead, crowded. As
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: my brother in Alaska, he doesn't like camo tents. He
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: doesn't get it. He likes the brightest tent he can find,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: and he likes a lot of bright tents because when
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: someone's flying over, he wants to look like all hell
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: broke loose down there. He's like, if I could have
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: set up five neon tents, I don't want to camo
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: t I wanted to be like I am here, we
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: are all here. Although sometimes sometimes Cow's example can backfire
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: because some people will be like, well good. It would
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: be like ice fishing man, when you go out to
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: lake and your ice fish and you just be like, oh,
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: everyone's over there. Place to start. Uh. Last question we
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: got when we wrapper up some guy was like, what's
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: your thoughts on pebble mind? I know all I know.
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: I understand all the arguments. Under said all the arguments. Um,
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: you know you drive everybody drives cars and we use
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: metal and no no, no, like I get it, I
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: get it. All people need jobs. I want people to
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: have jobs. I'm not anti job. I'm not anti mining. Um.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: I opposed that mine. It is the wrong project in
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: the wrong place. If if the headwaters of the biggest
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: salmon runs on the face of the earth, like if
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: that isn't like a line in the sand, I don't
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: know what is. I don't think we should mess around.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: I do not. I think that I would like I
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: would love it if the president um with just all
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: of a sudden you know, I know there's beyond presidential
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: like there's a lot of things, but there would be
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: a great step as the president would just and he
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: he has he's comfortable. Um. He went against his party
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: on divestit your federal lands. It was in the party
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: platform and he was like, not not gonna happen. Not
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: interested in divest your public lands. So he's like federal
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: managed lands. So he will go against like what they
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: got going on there I would breathe such a side
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: relief if he would put them, if you would come
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: out and be like, you know, not not gonna happen there. Yeah,
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: don't do it, man, don't do it. In a hundred years,
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: it'll be the winning decision will have been to not
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: do that. Don't do it. If we're talking about just
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: put a big, huge, open pit mine, big full of
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: toxic material in a seismically active is it true that
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: there's never been an open pit mine that hasn't failed,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: like hasn't been breached or failed in something. Absolutely? Absolutely.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: But you know there's some that that do that within
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: the degree of what's acceptable to amount of leakages. Yeah,
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely. But I mean this thing, you're like, it's
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: a it's a sponge. You're you're digging a hole that
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: we know is going to fill with water because every
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: other hole up there is full of water and there's
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: no place to put the water in a very seismically Yeah,
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: it's like it's like leech mining. You're you're digging out
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: or out of the ground. Then you're putting is it
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: cyanide leach up there? You're dissolving, you're dissolving precious metals
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: out of or with chemicals, and then you gotta do
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: something with all that stuff. And so they build a
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: big man made lake, and that big man made lake
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: like you build a big dam, right, and that man
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: made leg will be full of all that toxic material
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: and then you just kind of let it sit there
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: for eternity and hope that the damn doesn't burst. I'm
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: grossly oversimplifying. It's just out of just to get through
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: it quick. But I'm not anti minded man. I'm anti
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: that mine. Yeah, absolutely, I don't think it's the right
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: thing to do. I don't think it's I get all
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: the stuff though, I get the economy, I get jobs.
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: Don't do that one, like, don't do that one? Absolutely
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: too much to ask if they do do it. No,
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: they don't do it. I win a thousand dollar bet.
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: You're bias. I thought you said you don't like gambling.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: I made a bet on this where I made a
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: bet three years ago that it wouldn't be that they
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: wouldn't have initiated, that they wouldn't have started to extract
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: or in a decade. So I'm three years in and
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: seven more years that they have not extracted any or.
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: I went a thousand bucks. It says nothing with what
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: I you know, It's just that was I was just
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: in a betting mood. I'm back when I drank more,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: all these bets, all these bets about the next presidential election,
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: all this stuff was when I drank a lot more.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: Guy used getting a betting mood. Quarantine's turned. I don't
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: make it really any bet. I lose all my bets. Anyway,
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: didn't you also say you would, uh, you would engage
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: in civil disobedience over this? Yeah, I would think that
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: it might be a situation. I would think that it
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: would be if I if they were going to go
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: and actually do it, and I heard that there was
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: people that were going to go out and do like
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: like a civil disobedience, I would in the back of
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: my mind, I'd be like, yes, I'll not that I
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: condoned civil discipline. Well know, in some cases, why not?
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: That's what this country was built on, right, Like people
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: in Michigan go down to the state capital over like
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: a confusing effort to quarantine people's like civil disobedience. Um,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: it would be heartbreaking to me because I would just
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: I would be like, okay, if we can't if if
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: that if we can't do that, Like what else can't
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: we Yeah, where's the line? Like what is sort of
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: like not you know what is was like yellow Stones
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: that I you know, I mean, i'd rather put I
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: don't want to say that. It's just so contrary. It's like,
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: you know, especially like right now, I think folks got
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: like a little taste is a bad word, but I'm
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: using a little taste of food insecurity. Um. And you know, man,
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: I hope you come out at quick if you're listening
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: to this and you're and you're you're in that spot,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: right Tommy, And I'll tell you that was that it? Um,
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: But I might have spoke too much already. This is sorry, Tommy.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: You know this is America's salmon stocks. This is talking
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: about something different for the pebble mine, Like what's at risk?
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: This this a giant security blanket of food that we're like, Yeah,
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: that's a good argument. I'm gonna steal that from you. Yeah,
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: please do what you steal an argument, You're not really
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: stealing their argument. You just influenced me. Yeah. Yeah, um,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: there you go. That's what I think about. That's why
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: I think about that. Is there anything else we should
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: tell folks about anything like that. We're doing that. They
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: should be checking out. I was just thinking they should.
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: If they haven't yet, they to go check out the
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: six pack of meat eater hunts videos. You can see
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: uh Brody doing a little pig hunting Texas cow dude,
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: some goose and what's the other one you did? I
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: think that's it for me because it's Cal's wee can review.
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: Not it's Cal in the Field. Yeah, he's got a
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: separate series called Cal in the Field. Yannie Chase some
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: big old bulls and spear fishing spearfish Flasher catching some
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: beave is this is the spear is our spear fishing one?
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: Still caught up with an outperforming your elk one? Yes? Yeah,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: neck for a while. The beaver hunting episode is crushed, dude.
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: There's a thirst for there's a thirst for beaver videos. Man.
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: We tapped into the zeitgeist Forget and Deliver. People like it. Yeah,
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: you can't go out anymore at night. People like, oh
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: my god, it's the guy for the beaver video. Al Right, everybody,
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: thanks for joining. Ryan Callahan, Sat Morris, flip flop flasher,
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: Phil Taylor down there on the end, Dogs eating his uhs,
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: and Brody Henderson good night. No nicknames, Brody, I've never
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: gotten to work on it a little bit. Oh. I
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: thought of one though, for his his wife the other
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: day that I can't leave that word more often is
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: that his wife, Carrie, married into the Henderson name, and
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: uh so I saw it. I said, oh, Carrie, and
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: the Henderson's fe
