- 0:05Number five, Notre Dame not making excuses about clock clich following first
- 0:09loss of the season at BYU. This article
- 0:15is being read by an automated voice generated by Everlet. Notre Dame
- 0:20coach Marcus Freeman wasted not a single second blaming a clock glitch
- 0:24for his team's loss at BYU. Instead, he spent the bi week
- 0:28focused on mistakes to get the fighting Irish back on track. While
- 0:32Big twelve officials acknowledged last week that the refs erred by not
- 0:36putting one second back on the clock, giving Notre Dame another play
- 0:39to keep its fifteen game winning streak alive. Instead, they allowed time
- 0:44to expire, and the Irish wound up losing twenty eight twenty four
- 0:47to them, then eighth ranked Cougars. I reminded our guys that sometimes
- 0:52you've got to lose to win, Freeman said Monday, the first time
- 0:56he's spoken publicly since the Big Twelve's announcement. There's lessons in losing
- 1:00that, if you learn from them, will help you be better prepared
- 1:03for the next opportunity that presents itself. Our job is to learn
- 1:07from the many lessons I think that loss taught us, and I
- 1:10use the one second as an example. One second represents one more
- 1:15play, and we can't use it as an excuse. We've got to
- 1:17use it as a reminder that there were many one plays that
- 1:20if we win that play, It changes the outcome of the game.
- 1:24Had Notre Dame won in Provo, Utah, it might have ascended from
- 1:27number two to number one on one of college football's wackiest weekends.
- 1:32Instead, they fell to number four after five of
- 1:34the top seven teams lost. It marked the first time that happened
- 1:37since the poll began in nineteen thirty six. BYU, meanwhile, rose to
- 1:42number two only to fall back to number eight this week following
- 1:45a thirty nine thirty one loss at UCF last weekend. Notre Dame
- 1:49fell one more spot this week to number five. Following the Big
- 1:53Twelve's review of the final play of Saturday's Notre Dame Bue game,
- 1:57it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball
- 2:00hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay
- 2:04officiating crew. Conference officials said in a statement following the october seventeenth
- 2:09game's conclusion. The conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game
- 2:14officiating process in advance of October 24th weekends games. Time
- 2:20remained on
- 2:21the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was
- 2:23incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew, the Big Twelve said in
- 2:28a statement Last week. Still, the Irish, six and one, remain in
- 2:32solid playoff position following their bye week. They'll renew their annual rivalry
- 2:36with Navy two and five on Saturday in Foxboro, Massachusetts. It's not
- 2:41the first time Notre Dame has dealt with late game adversity during
- 2:45F Freeman's tenure. In September 2023, the Irish had ten defenders on
- 2:50the field, when the Buckeyes scored on a one yard run, to
- 2:53take a seventeen fourteen lead with just over a minute to go.
- 2:56The Buckeyes won seventeen fourteen. Last year, a botch snap on an
- 3:01extra point allowed Texas A and M to rally for a forty
- 3:05one forty win by tying the score with an eleven yard T
- 3:08D pass with thirteen seconds and then making the extra point to
- 3:11take the lead. There also was a controversial no call for holding
- 3:14on the Aggies final offensive play. Every week matters, and I think
- 3:19we've learned that valuable lesson throughout the course of my head coaching
- 3:22career. Freeman said. If you don't respect the opponent, you will get
- 3:26humbled. There's many examples I can give you, so our guys have
- 3:30no concern that our guys will be looking past this opportunity. And
- 3:35that includes talking any more about whether or not the Irish should
- 3:38have gotten one more play inside BYU's ten yard line on october
- 3:42seventeenth. I don't know in that's situation that our guys in the
- 3:46press box could say that the ball hit the ground with one
- 3:49second left, Freeman said. I think it's something that you've got to
- 3:53trust the officials and the replay officials to make sure they get
- 3:56that call right. There's got to be some type of systematic thing
- 4:00where that mistake doesn't happen. But you know, the minute that game
- 4:04was over it was complete chaos, like people on the field. They
- 4:09said it was over, and I don't anybody knew there was a
- 4:11second left until hours, maybe at least an hour later. I didn't
- 4:15know until somebody told me on the plane flight home, so I
- 4:18don't know if that's something we can truly monitor with the human
- 4:21eye. The head of replay, I think, is the one that said
- 4:24it's over. So there's nothing you can do in the moment. Sign
