- 2:17Speaker 2: and mighty governor and was able to save his family
- 2:21Speaker 2: from famine. Now we will begin stories inspired by the
- 2:25Speaker 2: book of Exodus. In this story, we will learn how
- 2:28Speaker 2: the Israelites were prospering in Egypt. But a new pharaoh
- 2:32Speaker 2: felt threatened by them, forced them into slavery, and commanded
- 2:36Speaker 2: that their baby boys be killed.

- 3:29Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org In our previous episode, we concluded the book
- 3:38Speaker 3: of Genesis. And as we closed out the story of Joseph,
- 3:42Speaker 3: he was revered by both Egyptians and Hebrews as a
- 3:45Speaker 3: great man of God and a deliverer, a rescuer of
- 3:50Speaker 3: the people. Today we begin the book of Exodus and
- 3:53Speaker 3: find a very different reality for the descendants of Jacob.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Years have passed, and the new Pharaoh does not see
- 4:00Speaker 3: the prosperous Hebrew people as a reminder of how God
- 4:03Speaker 3: rescued Egypt, but rather as a threat to his kingdom.
- 4:08Speaker 3: The Hebrew people find themselves now enslaved and forced to
- 4:12Speaker 3: endure hard labor and eventually watch powerlessly as Pharaoh murders
- 4:16Speaker 3: scores and scores of their infant sons. In the midst
- 4:20Speaker 3: of unbelievable wickedness and sorrow, we will still see God's faithfulness,
- 4:26Speaker 3: and that faithfulness will be shown through a baby boy
- 4:29Speaker 3: who is delivered to one day lead the people to freedom.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The family of Jacob was delivered from the famine and
- 4:42Speaker 2: brought to Egypt. There, under Joseph's guidance and God's provision,
- 4:47Speaker 2: 70 people grew into thousands.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Scattered throughout all Egypt, Hebrews thrived and multiplied. Joseph and
- 4:56Speaker 4: the twelve brothers of Israel had long passed, but their
- 4:59Speaker 4: descendants had grown into a strong, independent, and healthy nation,
- 5:04Speaker 4: just as God promised they would. A new pharaoh had emerged,
- 5:08Speaker 4: and the memory of Joseph's influence had long passed. He
- 5:12Speaker 4: looked down at the Hebrew people, multiplying into a great
- 5:16Speaker 4: nation right under his nose. He feared that if they
- 5:20Speaker 4: continued to multiply, they would leave Egypt and join their enemies.
- 5:24Speaker 4: So the heavy hand of Pharaoh descended upon the Hebrew people.
- 5:29Speaker 4: To squash their.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Hope and fruitlessness, he enslaved them. Under the mighty boot
- 5:35Speaker 2: of Egypt, the sons and daughters of Israel were made
- 5:38Speaker 2: slaves and tortured. Pharaoh oppressed them with hard labor, yet
- 5:43Speaker 2: there was a blessing still upon them. Just as their
- 5:47Speaker 2: ancestor Joseph had thrived under slavery, so did the Hebrew people.
- 5:52Speaker 2: They multiplied even greater under the crucible of Pharaoh's cruelty.
- 5:56Speaker 2: They were forced to build cities, but ended up occupying
- 6:00Speaker 2: them with their numbers. Pharaoh, becoming more calloused and afraid,
- 6:05Speaker 2: took his cruelty to a new level. He gathered the
- 6:08Speaker 2: Hebrew midwives, those responsible for helping the Hebrew women with labor.
- 6:13Speaker 2: While you are aiding them in.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Labor, allow the girls to live, but kill any baby
- 6:19Speaker 4: boy you see, he said. Pharaoh would punish the midwives
- 6:23Speaker 4: if they disobeyed. Luckily, the midwives feared God more than Pharaoh.
- 6:28Speaker 4: They would not do as he commanded.
- 6:31Speaker 2: When Pharaoh saw that the boys were still being born,
- 6:34Speaker 2: he gathered the midwives and asked, Why have you disobeyed me?
- 6:40Speaker 2: The midwives, with a quiet confidence of someone who knows
- 6:43Speaker 2: they did the right thing, simply said, The Hebrew women
- 6:47Speaker 2: are not like the Egyptian women. They are strong and vigorous,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get
- 6:54Speaker 2: there in time. They lied. Yet God blessed them. Pharaoh,
- 6:59Speaker 2: determined to give in to the darkness and pride gripping
- 7:02Speaker 2: his heart, used his power to enact a law God
- 7:05Speaker 2: would never forgive. Throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile,
- 7:11Speaker 2: Pharaoh decreed. And soldiers scattered throughout the city, pulling screaming
- 7:16Speaker 2: children from their mothers' arms. The Nile had engulfed hundreds
- 7:20Speaker 2: of babies. The screams of children, mothers and fathers echoed
- 7:25Speaker 2: throughout all Egypt. Pharaoh's brutality acted as a dark cloud
- 7:30Speaker 2: shrouding over all the land. Tears and blood filled the streets,
- 7:36Speaker 2: and the heart of Pharaoh grew darker and darker. Meanwhile,
- 7:41Speaker 2: a Hebrew woman was concealing her baby boy for three months.
- 7:45Speaker 2: She nursed him in secret. knowing that eventually he would
- 7:48Speaker 2: be discovered. She wove a basket of papyrus reeds and
- 7:52Speaker 2: waterproofed it with tar and pitch. With the diligence of
- 7:56Speaker 2: Noah and his ark, she crafted a vessel of redemption
- 8:00Speaker 2: for her son and sent him downstream towards the palaces.
- 8:04Speaker 2: The baby boy's sister trailed the basket down the river,
- 8:08Speaker 2: keeping close watch from afar as the basket traveled miles downstream. Soon,
- 8:14Speaker 2: Pharaoh's daughter came to the riverbank to bathe She and
- 8:17Speaker 2: her attendants played in the water and relaxed in the sun.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The princess saw a basket floating along and sent her
- 8:24Speaker 2: maid to go fetch it. The princess peered into the
- 8:28Speaker 2: basket to find a baby boy swaddled and crying. Pity
- 8:32Speaker 2: overcame the princess, for she knew that the baby must
- 8:35Speaker 2: have been Hebrew. She fell in love with him and
- 8:39Speaker 2: was determined to care for him, but the baby needed
- 8:42Speaker 2: a nurse. Suddenly, the baby's sister emerged from the reeds
- 8:46Speaker 2: by the river. Excited, yet scared, she suggested that her
- 8:51Speaker 2: mother could take care of the child until he was grown.
- 8:54Speaker 2: The princess agreed.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Thus the baby was raised by both his Hebrew biological
- 8:59Speaker 4: mother and his.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Egyptian adopted mother. He would grow up in two worlds,
- 9:05Speaker 2: never feeling fully part of one or the other. The
- 9:09Speaker 2: princess looked upon her son and gave him the name Moses,
- 9:13Speaker 2: for he was delivered out of the water. Moses, now
- 9:17Speaker 2: a prince of Egypt, would soon realize what it truly
- 9:20Speaker 2: means to be delivered.
- 9:25Speaker 3: As the book of Exodus opens, the Hebrew nation is
- 9:27Speaker 3: grown from Israel's family numbering 70 into a prosperous and
- 9:32Speaker 3: thriving people scattered throughout the land of Egypt. It was
- 9:36Speaker 3: just as God had promised Jacob that his descendants would
- 9:40Speaker 3: grow and be a great and mighty nation. Though living
- 9:43Speaker 3: far from Canaan, Now living in a foreign land, God
- 9:47Speaker 3: did just as he promised. Israel was a mighty nation.
- 9:51Speaker 3: But there's a new Pharaoh on the throne, one who
- 9:54Speaker 3: knows nothing about Joseph or what God did through Joseph.
- 9:57Speaker 3: All he sees are the threats of the Hebrews. foreigners
- 10:00Speaker 3: multiplying his kingdom and growing into very wealthy people. So
- 10:05Speaker 3: fear seizes him and he seizes the Hebrews, enslaving them
- 10:08Speaker 3: and forcing them to work to build cities in his empire.
- 10:12Speaker 3: But God's blessing remains upon his people and their numbers
- 10:16Speaker 3: increase all the more. So the Pharaoh realizes that if
- 10:20Speaker 3: this continues in this way, the Hebrews will outnumber his
- 10:24Speaker 3: people and they could overtake his land by force. A deep, dark, evil,
- 10:29Speaker 3: devilish evil creeps into the heart of this man and
- 10:33Speaker 3: he orders the mass slaughter of male Hebrew babies. He
- 10:36Speaker 3: orders the midwives to perpetrate this heinous act, but they
- 10:39Speaker 3: fear God more than they fear Pharaoh, so they choose
- 10:43Speaker 3: to disobey the Pharaoh. These midwives certainly acted courageously They
- 10:49Speaker 3: feared God more than they feared man. So they did
- 10:52Speaker 3: what they could to protect the lives of innocent babies.
- 10:55Speaker 3: God in turn chose to bless them because they did
- 10:58Speaker 3: the right thing, the godly thing. And the Hebrew population
- 11:02Speaker 3: increased despite Pharaoh's order of infanticide. Now Pharaoh is really mad,
- 11:08Speaker 3: enraged in fact. So he enlists his army to tear
- 11:11Speaker 3: babies from their mother's arms and throw them into the Nile.
- 11:15Speaker 3: As the Egyptian soldiers tear through Hebrew homes, one mother
- 11:20Speaker 3: conceives a plan to hide her boy and to save
- 11:23Speaker 3: his life. She bravely places her baby in a basket
- 11:28Speaker 3: and floats him down the great Nile River to be
- 11:30Speaker 3: discovered by an Egyptian woman. She trusted God to protect
- 11:35Speaker 3: her son and rescue him. And none other than Pharaoh's
- 11:39Speaker 3: daughter discovers the child and has compassion on him. And
- 11:44Speaker 3: God's faithfulness and trustworthiness does not stop there, of course.
- 11:48Speaker 3: He provides for this child's mother to nurse her baby
- 11:51Speaker 3: and to be with him until he's old enough to
- 11:53Speaker 3: go to the palace. His adoptive mother names the boy
- 11:57Speaker 3: Moses because she rescued him from the waters. Moses will
- 12:03Speaker 3: be raised in two worlds, close to his biological family,
- 12:07Speaker 3: a Hebrew and but protected by the Pharaoh's hand because
- 12:10Speaker 3: his adoptive mother was herself an Egyptian princess. But it
- 12:15Speaker 3: seems that he grows up really not fitting into either world.
- 12:19Speaker 3: And yet God will work through Moses and use him,
- 12:22Speaker 3: one of the mightiest men who ever lived, to rescue
- 12:25Speaker 3: the enslaved Hebrews and take them to the land God
- 12:28Speaker 3: had promised. Before he gets there, though, Moses will experience
- 12:32Speaker 3: the sting of rejection in both his worlds. And it
- 12:35Speaker 3: will send him on a journey far from Egypt and
- 12:37Speaker 3: the suffering of his people till God shows up once
- 12:41Speaker 3: again and changes his life forever. We'll learn more about
- 12:45Speaker 3: that the next time. Dear God, we're often stunned by
- 12:50Speaker 3: the evil and the wickedness of humanity. And in today's story,
- 12:54Speaker 3: we have seen the worst kinds of evil that men
- 12:57Speaker 3: are able to commit. And yet through it all, we
- 13:02Speaker 3: see your protection, We see your provision and your promises fulfilled. Lord,
- 13:08Speaker 3: like the midwives, may we fear you more than we
- 13:12Speaker 3: fear men. May we be courageous always in our faith
- 13:15Speaker 3: and act in ways that please you. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
