Transcript
- 0:02what is going on everybody
- 0:04welcome to the first
- 0:06edition of lunch with the
- 0:07clydesdale um still working
- 0:10on some kinks out and
- 0:11things like that but I just
- 0:14wanted to have like a
- 0:14little place to come in each day
- 0:17We'll probably wrap up to
- 0:19daily after the first of
- 0:21the year for the holidays
- 0:22here and my wife having surgery soon.
- 0:27It'll probably take a couple
- 0:28weeks to get us to where
- 0:29we're doing this as a daily show.
- 0:35But I just wanted to come on
- 0:37and anybody from our crew
- 0:39can hop in at any time to
- 0:41check out what's going on.
- 0:43and have a conversation
- 0:44about things going on just in life.
- 0:47So what's up, Kenneth?
- 0:49So this is the first one
- 0:52that we're doing this way.
- 0:55Make sure you like and
- 0:56subscribe to the channel.
- 0:57We really appreciate that.
- 0:58And leave any comments to
- 1:01help out the algorithm.
- 1:02That would be awesome.
- 1:03But what I'm gonna do first
- 1:04is last night on Sunday
- 1:06Night CrossFit Talk,
- 1:07we talked a lot about the
- 1:09World Fitness Project and
- 1:10their release of things.
- 1:13And I just wanted to kind of
- 1:14recap my thoughts about
- 1:15that moving forward.
- 1:19So I'm super excited.
- 1:20I said last night,
- 1:21I'm super excited that
- 1:23someone has put together
- 1:24what appears to be the
- 1:27assemblance of a season
- 1:28that makes sense for people to follow.
- 1:32You go to events, you earn points,
- 1:34the top twenty at the end of the year,
- 1:36earn their pro card,
- 1:38and then they get to
- 1:39participate the following
- 1:40year as a contracted pro athlete,
- 1:44and they get to skip some
- 1:46of the steps to get to the
- 1:48major events because
- 1:49they've earned that pro card.
- 1:51Uh,
- 1:51that is a model that has worked in auto
- 1:53racing, that has worked in golf,
- 1:55that has worked in tennis, um,
- 1:58for years and years and years.
- 2:00Um,
- 2:01there are a lot of details that still
- 2:02need to be put out there
- 2:04for us to have full
- 2:06commitment on what this is
- 2:07going to be and whether
- 2:08it's going to be effective.
- 2:10Um,
- 2:12But yeah,
- 2:12I think it's going to be
- 2:14something that's going to
- 2:15be pretty awesome.
- 2:17And if anything,
- 2:21I don't think that it's... Maybe it will,
- 2:25but I don't think it will
- 2:26take over what the CrossFit
- 2:28Games season is.
- 2:30I'm hoping that it pushes
- 2:31the people who run the
- 2:32CrossFit Games season...
- 2:34uh to think outside the the
- 2:36box to push into a season
- 2:38that makes sense uh so
- 2:40what's up holly um so
- 2:43that's what I'm really
- 2:43hoping for is that you have
- 2:45these two entities that are
- 2:47both existing and it pushes
- 2:50each other to be more
- 2:51innovative more creative
- 2:54and streamline into a
- 2:55system that isn't changed
- 2:57every year and actually
- 2:58makes sense for the consumer to follow
- 3:02And then if it makes more
- 3:05sense for the consumer to follow,
- 3:07then you gain more fans and
- 3:09then your fans become a
- 3:10revenue source instead of
- 3:11just relying on sponsors
- 3:15and participants paying
- 3:16entry fees into the system.
- 3:20So I really,
- 3:21really am behind the WFP and I
- 3:25can't wait to see what's
- 3:26coming out because I do
- 3:27think it's going to make a
- 3:28lot of sense in the future
- 3:31for them to do it.
- 3:32I think the first year is
- 3:33going to be very small and
- 3:36it's going to be a proof of concept.
- 3:39um,
- 3:39Holly says that sounds logical and
- 3:41she's correct.
- 3:42It does.
- 3:43Um,
- 3:43but maybe just maybe we're to a point
- 3:46where logic has to take
- 3:48over and we do it for the
- 3:50right reasons and not because, um,
- 3:54we just want to try
- 3:54something different or
- 3:56because of economic reasons.
- 3:58I,
- 3:58I think the plan that the WFP has put
- 4:01out is, um,
- 4:06is viable and sustainable in
- 4:11a way if you can get
- 4:13partners to come along for the ride.
- 4:16So ACR, what's going on?
- 4:19She says, what am I eating for lunch?
- 4:21I have not made that determination yet.
- 4:25I'll probably grab lunch and
- 4:27eat at my desk right after this is done.
- 4:30It'll probably be some leftovers.
- 4:31So I'm thinking maybe some chicken,
- 4:34some chicken and a
- 4:35vegetable that I can find in the fridge.
- 4:38So yeah, something like that.
- 4:43So, yeah,
- 4:43so I'd love to hear your thoughts
- 4:45on the WFP.
- 4:46I think that this pro card
- 4:49idea is a huge incentive
- 4:52for the athletes to get
- 4:53into that top twenty and to
- 4:55be guaranteed money for the season.
- 4:59That's a game changer for them.
- 5:01I think it's a logical step
- 5:03to get partners to come
- 5:04along for the ride,
- 5:06to invest in this in a way
- 5:08that's different than what
- 5:09they've had as options before, because
- 5:12You can then sponsor athletes.
- 5:14You can sponsor a pro card
- 5:15athlete knowing that
- 5:17they're a pro card athlete for the year.
- 5:19You can sponsor events that
- 5:21are taking place.
- 5:21You can sponsor the online thing.
- 5:25And then I do think that
- 5:26they do need to stream
- 5:28these events to make it
- 5:30very interesting and
- 5:31compelling for the consumer.
- 5:33They really get the consumer
- 5:35involved for all that.
- 5:37So what's up, Jay Birch?
- 5:41So yeah, those are my thoughts on the WFP.
- 5:44I think it is something that
- 5:46we needed in this space.
- 5:47We needed pushed.
- 5:49CrossFit needs pushed into a
- 5:51direction that makes sense.
- 5:54And I'm hoping that that is what happens,
- 5:57that both entities really
- 5:58push themselves to get outside the box,
- 6:01be creative,
- 6:02and make something that works.
- 6:03And then ideally,
- 6:05just like Live Golf and PGA
- 6:08Golf come together in the end,
- 6:10and have a very sustainable
- 6:12CrossFit game season that
- 6:13makes sense for everybody
- 6:15and pull all resources together.
- 6:17That would be awesome.
- 6:19Um, hopefully that is in the cards.
- 6:21If not,
- 6:22one's going to win out over the other.
- 6:24I'm sure because we are not
- 6:25big enough at this point to sustain two,
- 6:28two separate seasons.
- 6:30Uh,
- 6:30because I do think that if WFP is going
- 6:33to be successful,
- 6:34it's going to have to
- 6:34expand after this first year.
- 6:36It's not going to be just
- 6:37three events that then you can do both.
- 6:39It's going to have to expand
- 6:41out where there's more
- 6:42opportunities to earn
- 6:43points around the world.
- 6:45Um, and,
- 6:46Because right now,
- 6:48because you only have two
- 6:49tour events before the finals,
- 6:52and you put one in the U.S.
- 6:53and one in Europe,
- 6:55that means Australian
- 6:56athletes will have to travel.
- 6:58That means South American
- 6:59athletes will have to travel.
- 7:01So I do believe that at some
- 7:03point it needs to expand to
- 7:05give opportunities to earn
- 7:06points in different parts
- 7:08around the world so everybody can play.
- 7:11um in this first year that's
- 7:13going to be very limited
- 7:14with just two tour stops um
- 7:17in that in that initial
- 7:18year but um but I think
- 7:20it's a great again proof of
- 7:22concept um and there are
- 7:24still more details we need
- 7:25to see um so I am
- 7:27reluctantly optimistic with
- 7:29this um but I'm excited to
- 7:31see what's next because it
- 7:32seems like this has been
- 7:33very well thought out um
- 7:36and super excited to
- 7:38To see what they bring to the table.
- 7:40Again,
- 7:40last night on Sunday Night CrossFit Talk,
- 7:43Carolyn and Jamie and I
- 7:44talked about this at length.
- 7:46If you want to hear more
- 7:48thoughts and ideas about it,
- 7:50make sure you go back and
- 7:51check that out on the
- 7:52Sunday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 7:55There's a lot more back and forth there.
- 7:59And they have the athlete perspective.
- 8:01I have the consumer media perspective.
- 8:05And so I think mine's a
- 8:06little bit different where
- 8:07they are trying to put
- 8:08themselves in the shoes of
- 8:10the athletes and looking at
- 8:12affordability as a challenger,
- 8:15viability as a challenger
- 8:17to get that pro card,
- 8:18things like that that I am
- 8:21probably not thinking as
- 8:23deeply about as they are.
- 8:25So they really bring a
- 8:26different perspective to that.
- 8:30So the other thing that I
- 8:32was going to talk about today, and again,
- 8:34this show is not going to
- 8:35be a CrossFit show.
- 8:36These daily shows are just
- 8:37going to be whatever's on
- 8:38my mind and just some
- 8:41different things that I
- 8:41found interesting.
- 8:43Hopefully you will too.
- 8:45But I talked last night that
- 8:46one of the things I'm going
- 8:47to discuss today is my wife and I,
- 8:50it's been snowing here in Ohio.
- 8:53We actually got a warm-up today,
- 8:55but we've been watching
- 8:56some Christmas movies on Netflix.
- 8:59And I was going to give my
- 9:01rating of the Netflix movies,
- 9:03Christmas movies that I've
- 9:04watched from this year.
- 9:05And it seems like Netflix
- 9:07keeps building on how many
- 9:09Christmas movies they bring
- 9:10out every year.
- 9:13I will say my favorite Netflix movie.
- 9:17Christmas movies have been
- 9:20love hard and a holiday.
- 9:23Um, those are both great movies.
- 9:25Both.
- 9:26I would give an eight plus two.
- 9:28None of this year's lineup
- 9:29met the expectations that
- 9:32those two have set.
- 9:33Um,
- 9:34I think Love Hard has become
- 9:36like a classic for me and
- 9:37something that I will
- 9:38probably watch every year.
- 9:41If you have never seen it,
- 9:43it is an online dating kind
- 9:46of mishap Christmas movie
- 9:49where one of them believes
- 9:51that Die Hard is the
- 9:52greatest Christmas movie ever.
- 9:54The other one believes Love
- 9:55Actually is the greatest
- 9:56Christmas movie ever.
- 9:57And that's why you get the name Love Hard.
- 10:01But it is the typical miscommunication,
- 10:06and then antics ensue and blah, blah,
- 10:10blah.
- 10:10But it is definitely a
- 10:11classic that you should check out.
- 10:14But this year,
- 10:15they've offered a handful of movies.
- 10:17And the first one that I
- 10:18watched was Hot Frosty.
- 10:21That is a movie about a
- 10:23snowman that comes to life
- 10:26and a widower widow meets
- 10:29up with him as he has come
- 10:31to life and the town local
- 10:37authorities are trying to
- 10:38arrest him because when he
- 10:39came to life he had no
- 10:41clothes on therefore he was
- 10:42streaking through the
- 10:43square and uh wants to
- 10:46arrest the snowman for this
- 10:48now uh it was a sculpted
- 10:50snowman it was not your
- 10:51typical um ball on top of balls and um
- 10:59This was a sculpted snowman,
- 11:00so this guy was a very
- 11:01chiseled body running
- 11:03around the square naked
- 11:05with very creative ways of
- 11:06covering the indecent parts
- 11:09for a family-friendly Netflix show.
- 11:11But I really enjoyed this one.
- 11:14It deals with...
- 11:19It deals with a snowman
- 11:22needing to stay cold,
- 11:23that going inside is hard for him.
- 11:26So they have to deal with those things.
- 11:28But he looks like a human at
- 11:30the point he becomes alive.
- 11:32So it's a lot of that kind
- 11:34of back and forth stuff.
- 11:35Very good.
- 11:36I give that one an A-.
- 11:37It actually has Lacey Charbet.
- 11:43Um,
- 11:43I always say Chabert to my mom just to
- 11:45drive her nuts, but, uh,
- 11:46it's Lacey Chabert, Lacey Chabert.
- 11:49That's what it is.
- 11:50Um, she is the star of it.
- 11:51She has started,
- 11:52she was in party of five as a kid.
- 11:54Uh, she was in mean girls.
- 11:56Um,
- 11:56and then she became like the darling of
- 11:58the Hallmark movie channel.
- 11:59where she has starred in
- 12:00like thirty different
- 12:01movies for Hallmark.
- 12:02But but this one, I think,
- 12:04is a step up from the Hallmark movies,
- 12:06much better produced things like that.
- 12:08The next one I'm going to
- 12:09get into is Our Little Secret,
- 12:10which is the Lindsay Lohan
- 12:12holiday movie of the year.
- 12:14She did one last year where
- 12:17she has amnesia falling off
- 12:18a mountain this year.
- 12:19This one is that she and her
- 12:21boyfriend break up.
- 12:23They go their separate ways.
- 12:25Ten years later,
- 12:26they're invited to a family
- 12:28get-together for the holidays,
- 12:31and they are dating
- 12:34siblings from this family
- 12:36and end up running into
- 12:37each other at this new holiday event.
- 12:42It was a pretty good movie.
- 12:45I would say just to kind of
- 12:46write down the middle,
- 12:47I'd give it a C-plus for that one.
- 12:54used lindsay lindsay lohan
- 12:57um just in my opinion does
- 13:00not have the acting chops
- 13:01yet back whatever um to get
- 13:04into this it uh it's a nice
- 13:07cute movie um nothing that
- 13:09I would um again doesn't
- 13:13meet that like classic
- 13:14level of something you want
- 13:15to watch year year over year
- 13:20The next one is Meet Me Next Christmas.
- 13:23This one is about a woman
- 13:24who meets a man in an airport,
- 13:27like the Delta Club or
- 13:29something like that,
- 13:30and they're stranded there
- 13:31because of flight delays.
- 13:33They have a nice conversation,
- 13:35but they're both seeing each other,
- 13:36seeing somebody else at the time,
- 13:38and they say, hey,
- 13:39if we aren't seeing these
- 13:42people next year at New Year's,
- 13:44let's meet at a Pentatonix concert,
- 13:46and we will...
- 13:49and we will meet there,
- 13:50and it'll be a match.
- 13:53So the entire premise of the
- 13:55movie is that the woman is
- 13:56trying to get a ticket to
- 13:57the Pentatonix show to go
- 13:59meet this guy because her
- 14:01relationship has failed over the year.
- 14:03She's trying to get there,
- 14:04and she hires a ticket
- 14:05um agent concierge to help
- 14:07her get that ticket um
- 14:09pentatonix actually get
- 14:11involved in it as they are
- 14:13watching it through um text
- 14:15messages and this concierge
- 14:17trying to get a free ticket
- 14:18to get her this um it was a
- 14:21very cute movie if you like
- 14:22pentatonix they sing a lot
- 14:24in this movie um they are
- 14:25they play a big role in it
- 14:27um and I give it a solid b
- 14:30um for the year I'm
- 14:31definitely worth the watch
- 14:33um maybe a re-watch movie um
- 14:36it's on that borderline of
- 14:37could it be a re-watch
- 14:39could it not be um what
- 14:42kind of helps it for me is
- 14:43my family has gone to see
- 14:44pentatonix at the holidays
- 14:46uh they put on a great show
- 14:47um and you can see parts of
- 14:49that in this movie as the
- 14:51movie ends at their concert
- 14:54and they are actually
- 14:55putting on some of the um
- 14:58the numbers at that point
- 14:59and you can see the stage
- 15:00sets and different stuff
- 15:01like that um it's pretty
- 15:03cool um I give that a solid
- 15:05b it was it was really good
- 15:07um the next the last one I
- 15:09will uh review for this
- 15:10year is mary gentleman this
- 15:12is about a woman who
- 15:15was like a Rockette style
- 15:18performer in New York City.
- 15:19She loses her job basically
- 15:22because of ageism is kind of the premise.
- 15:25And she has to go return to
- 15:26her family in a small town.
- 15:29And they own a bar nightclub
- 15:32that used to be
- 15:33the happening spot in town,
- 15:35but has kind of dilapidated
- 15:37into a place that needs fixing up.
- 15:43And the patrons are kind of
- 15:45your typical bar flies.
- 15:46It's not a really happening place anymore.
- 15:49And they're having a hard
- 15:50time reaching the rent.
- 15:52And the daughter comes back and decides,
- 15:55hey, I want to help my parents.
- 15:57So I'm going to put on a
- 15:58male review Christmas show.
- 16:00So she gets a couple of the
- 16:01guys from the neighborhood
- 16:03to put on a male review.
- 16:06They do that.
- 16:07It's quite successful.
- 16:10But it's a really good movie.
- 16:13I gave it a B+.
- 16:14It was really enjoyable to watch.
- 16:19The acting was, I thought,
- 16:20much better than some of the others.
- 16:21And the storyline was pretty good.
- 16:25Like most Christmas movies,
- 16:26there's a predictable ending,
- 16:28which is still cool.
- 16:31But they did a really nice job with it.
- 16:34And so I give that one a solid B+.
- 16:36Again...
- 16:38none of this year's
- 16:40offerings uh match up to
- 16:42love hard or any of those
- 16:44from the past years love
- 16:46heart is just one of my
- 16:47favorites of all time um
- 16:50and I actually just
- 16:51rewatched it this weekend
- 16:53uh and it does stand the
- 16:54test of time you can watch
- 16:55that over and over again
- 16:56just like your classics like
- 16:59Christmas Vacation, Elf, Love Actually,
- 17:04those standard Christmas
- 17:05movies that people watch year over year.
- 17:08Love Heart is that.
- 17:09I don't think any of these
- 17:11this year's make it
- 17:12completely to that level.
- 17:14There's a couple borderline
- 17:15ones that maybe you'd watch,
- 17:18but I think it was a good fair this year,
- 17:22but nothing that hit the
- 17:24Grand Slam home run like
- 17:26Love Heart did last year or
- 17:28the year before.
- 17:36holly says christmas
- 17:36vacation is too chaotic um
- 17:40my mom is one of four
- 17:42sisters um every christmas
- 17:44was chaotic when we when we
- 17:46grew up um and so maybe it
- 17:48just reminds me of that um
- 17:51a lot another movie that
- 17:52netflix brought out a
- 17:54couple years ago is the
- 17:55feast of the seven fishes
- 17:57um and that family chaos is
- 17:59very reminiscent of how I
- 18:02grew up at the holidays so
- 18:08ACR is not a Christmas vacation fan.
- 18:13Wow.
- 18:15Are you even American?
- 18:17No, I'm just kidding.
- 18:18No, I get it.
- 18:18I get it.
- 18:19Everybody has different
- 18:20flavors and different tastes.
- 18:23What is your favorite Christmas movie,
- 18:25Miss Riddell?
- 18:30If anybody has a favorite
- 18:31that they think that people should...
- 18:37that they that they think
- 18:38people should check out
- 18:39throw it in the comments
- 18:40and I'll throw it up here
- 18:42um uh holly says I have
- 18:45five siblings maybe chaos
- 18:47is too real and this I get
- 18:49totally acr um way
- 18:51overplayed and overdone
- 18:53christmas vacation is so
- 18:54quoted when I go to my
- 18:56in-laws house they quote
- 18:57that movie every stinking
- 18:59year every stinking time um
- 19:04Yeah, it can get too much.
- 19:06And there are years that I
- 19:06do not watch it.
- 19:08I have not watched it this year,
- 19:09to be quite frank.
- 19:14Jay Burch's The Classic Christmas Story.
- 19:16For me,
- 19:17that's just because TBS always
- 19:18played it on Christmas Day.
- 19:20We would just have it running on a loop,
- 19:22basically, at our house on Christmas Day.
- 19:26And like half pay attention
- 19:28to it because you can catch
- 19:29it as it's coming on and coming off.
- 19:33So, yeah.
- 19:37And Holly says holiday, the holiday.
- 19:40That's a great one.
- 19:41Love that one a lot.
- 19:43And our Christmas story.
- 19:47Yeah,
- 19:48my family does the tradition of every
- 19:49Christmas Eve, we watch Love Actually.
- 19:53And then Christmas story,
- 19:55we just kind of run through
- 19:57the day on the day of Christmas.
- 20:01Um, the holiday is awesome.
- 20:03We watched that one a lot.
- 20:05Um, but I am a huge Kate Winslet fan.
- 20:08So, uh, always enjoy watching Kate, uh,
- 20:14ACR.
- 20:14Uh,
- 20:14I do like elf Grinch white Christmas
- 20:17and then some of the Netflix ones.
- 20:19See the Grinch, the Jim Carrey one.
- 20:21I am not a fan of, not a fan of, uh,
- 20:24I don't know why.
- 20:26Um, I know a lot of people are, uh,
- 20:29but yeah.
- 20:33I love the original animated Grinch.
- 20:37But yeah.
- 20:43ACR, like Christmas Chronicles,
- 20:45Jingle Jangle.
- 20:46Christmas Chronicles is one
- 20:47of the best movies out there.
- 20:50The first Christmas
- 20:51Chronicles was awesome.
- 20:53That was a huge surprise for
- 20:54me and a big win for Netflix.
- 20:56That is one that I would
- 20:57watch over and over again, for sure.
- 21:05But yeah, so those are the Netflix,
- 21:08the movies,
- 21:09I will throw in a bonus one I
- 21:10watched read one on Friday
- 21:12night that has already come
- 21:14to prime video, and it is a. It is a.
- 21:23movie about santa has uh
- 21:27he's like a ripped santa
- 21:29the rock is his lead elf
- 21:31and um he gets kidnapped
- 21:34and they have to use this
- 21:36kind of hacker guy which is
- 21:38chris evans to find uh
- 21:41santa so the rock and chris
- 21:42evans uh you know captain
- 21:44america are going to look
- 21:46for uh santa and with that um
- 21:53they run into this,
- 21:55which is the person who has
- 21:56stolen kidnapped Santa.
- 21:58And she has some magic that
- 22:00allows like snowmen to come
- 22:01to life and they have to
- 22:02fight them on and different
- 22:03things like that.
- 22:05Um,
- 22:06really was I was so excited
- 22:08about it because I love
- 22:10eighties action movies and
- 22:11it was so close to getting
- 22:13there and then it kind of
- 22:15tried to be more than just
- 22:16an action movie tried to be
- 22:18like a good solid drama and
- 22:20it it fell short for me um
- 22:22I was so disappointed with
- 22:24the way the middle went in
- 22:25that movie the beginning
- 22:27was awesome the end was
- 22:28awesome the middle just blah
- 22:32um and it could have been it
- 22:34could have been an awesome
- 22:35christmas action movie that
- 22:38would have been so fun to
- 22:39watch just very different
- 22:41than what's out there right
- 22:42now um and it it tried to
- 22:45be a little too dramatic in
- 22:47the middle for me uh jay
- 22:50burke jay birch throws in
- 22:51the family stone uh that's a good one so
- 22:59So that's our Christmas movie talk.
- 23:00The next thing I just on my
- 23:02mind and wanted to talk
- 23:03about is the college transfer portal.
- 23:07We have the college football
- 23:08playoffs coming up this weekend.
- 23:10My Penn State Nittany Lions
- 23:12have made it to the twelve team playoff.
- 23:14Super excited about that.
- 23:15As I was sitting down to do
- 23:17the Sunday night CrossFit show,
- 23:19my phone had an alert that.
- 23:26had an alert that Bo Pribola,
- 23:28who is the backup
- 23:29quarterback for the Penn
- 23:30State Nittany Lions,
- 23:31was entering the transfer
- 23:33portal and foregoing the
- 23:35college football playoffs.
- 23:38And that just set me off.
- 23:39Like, one,
- 23:40Bo Probola is a prominent player
- 23:43in the Nittany Lions offense.
- 23:45He plays probably twenty to
- 23:47twenty five percent of the
- 23:48snaps because they put both
- 23:51him and the starting
- 23:52quarterback on the field at
- 23:53the same time in a lot of different sets.
- 23:57And he is more of a running
- 23:59quarterback where Drew Aller, the starter,
- 24:01is a throwing quarterback.
- 24:03And now the Penn State
- 24:05Nittany Lions are without
- 24:07him for the playoffs
- 24:08because of this transfer portal.
- 24:10I get that the new NIL and
- 24:13that college sports as an
- 24:15amateur thing are pretty
- 24:16much a thing of the past.
- 24:18But why are we letting
- 24:19people jump from their
- 24:21teams right before the playoffs?
- 24:24Why can't we wait to open
- 24:25the portal or the
- 24:27announcements to open the
- 24:28portal to be after the playoffs are done?
- 24:33I find it ridiculous that
- 24:34teams not only have to
- 24:36combat beating the team they have to play,
- 24:39but now they have to hope
- 24:40that their players stay on
- 24:41the team and don't leave
- 24:43prior to the playoffs starting.
- 24:45They've competed all year.
- 24:47Penn State went, what, ten and one,
- 24:50eleven and one, something like that.
- 24:52And and then lost in the Big
- 24:54Ten championship game by a
- 24:55touchdown to Oregon,
- 24:56who is the number one team
- 24:57in the country.
- 24:58So they have a good team.
- 25:00And now they're,
- 25:01they have to go into the
- 25:03playoffs without one of the
- 25:05prominent players on their offense.
- 25:08And I think that sucks.
- 25:11I get it.
- 25:12I get it's a new era and I'm
- 25:14old and I'm the grumpy guy
- 25:15yelling at the clouds on my porch,
- 25:18but doggone it, man.
- 25:19Like I've invested in this
- 25:21team all season long.
- 25:23And now right before the playoffs, uh,
- 25:27players get ripped off my
- 25:28team because they want to
- 25:29go play somewhere else.
- 25:31And I get it.
- 25:32Drew Aller has announced
- 25:33that he's coming back to
- 25:34Penn state for a senior year.
- 25:35This kid is probably not going to get any,
- 25:37get more playing time as a starter.
- 25:39He wants to go someplace
- 25:40where he can be a starter.
- 25:42That's fine.
- 25:43Just let him do it after the
- 25:44playoffs are over.
- 25:47It really,
- 25:48it really cripples what's going on for,
- 25:51for teams in that you
- 25:53follow the whole damn season.
- 25:55Like it just sucks.
- 26:00Um, Jay Birch agreed.
- 26:01The schools have committed to them, money,
- 26:03time, and resources.
- 26:04And these kids want to shirk
- 26:05their commitment.
- 26:06I, I agree.
- 26:07Finish the season.
- 26:09Uh,
- 26:09when I was raising my daughter and she
- 26:10wanted to try something, I was like,
- 26:12you can try anything you want to,
- 26:14and I will support it,
- 26:16but you are going to finish whatever,
- 26:19whatever year season,
- 26:21whatever that may be.
- 26:24because you are making a
- 26:25commitment to that, whether it be a band,
- 26:28whether it be a sport,
- 26:30you have committed to that
- 26:31team or that group of
- 26:32people that you will be
- 26:33there to support them until
- 26:35that season is over.
- 26:38We had this battle when she
- 26:39played the viola.
- 26:41She wanted to try it.
- 26:43I said, that is fine.
- 26:45You will just have to finish
- 26:48the concert year.
- 26:49whatever that is.
- 26:51And she fought me on it, but doggone it,
- 26:53you made a commitment to
- 26:54that orchestra that you
- 26:55would be there until the
- 26:56end and you were going to
- 26:57be there until the end.
- 27:00But it seems like these days in college,
- 27:02man, nobody,
- 27:04that commitment means nothing.
- 27:07And it's really frustrating
- 27:10to be a fan of a team that
- 27:12has just missed the college
- 27:14football playoff when it
- 27:15was for so many years and
- 27:17we finally get in.
- 27:19And now one of our better
- 27:20players is leaving through
- 27:21the transfer portal right
- 27:22as the playoffs start this Saturday.
- 27:26So, yeah.
- 27:28So Jay Burch, you're down there in Texas.
- 27:31Are you an SMU fan?
- 27:32Are you a Texas fan, A&M fan,
- 27:35or none of the above?
- 27:39Because we got SMU in the
- 27:40playoffs in the first round.
- 27:54The last thing I'm going to
- 27:55talk about is...
- 27:57Texas and Texas A&M, you can like both.
- 28:02I thought they were rivals.
- 28:04Or is Oklahoma a bigger rival for Texas?
- 28:12I have attended both schools.
- 28:14There you go.
- 28:19Was one undergrad, one master's or?
- 28:24I love learning about you guys.
- 28:31attended like fourteen
- 28:32schools on my path to a
- 28:34bachelor's degree and then
- 28:36uh stuck at one school for
- 28:37my master's so I couldn't
- 28:40decide what I wanted to be
- 28:41when I grew up I was on the
- 28:44fifteen year plan um but
- 28:50anyway um last thing is
- 28:52bears are on monday night
- 28:53football tonight
- 28:55I don't know how to root for
- 28:57my team anymore.
- 28:58They're really bad.
- 28:59They fired their coach.
- 29:01They fired their offensive coordinator.
- 29:03Do I root for them to lose
- 29:04so that I get a better draft pick?
- 29:07Or do I root for them to win
- 29:09so that they can get this
- 29:10losing streak done and
- 29:12actually start in the
- 29:14process of learning how to win games?
- 29:19Oh, wow.
- 29:26Jay Birch has a PhD dude,
- 29:31big brain in the house.
- 29:36Wow.
- 29:37Um, so yes.
- 29:39So what do I do?
- 29:39Do I want the draft pick or
- 29:40do I want my team to learn
- 29:42how to start winning?
- 29:44And I think I've kind of
- 29:45like resolved myself to like,
- 29:47I want them to start winning.
- 29:49They need to, ah, didn't finish.
- 29:52Hey,
- 29:53I think you and Holly have something
- 29:54in common.
- 29:55maybe maybe I'm wrong that's
- 29:58wrong somebody else
- 30:02somebody else maybe Sally I
- 30:04don't know I've met way too
- 30:07many people so anyway um
- 30:11I've cut result to the fact
- 30:12that I want my team to
- 30:14learn to win I think that
- 30:16losing is just becoming too uh
- 30:21losing is just becoming a
- 30:22habit and we need to get
- 30:24rid of that on our team.
- 30:26And I just want them to, um,
- 30:29I want them to learn,
- 30:33get rid of losing in their vocabulary,
- 30:35start winning some games
- 30:37and believing that they can
- 30:39win going into next season.
- 30:40I think that is more
- 30:41important than a high draft pick.
- 30:47um holly says that jay birch
- 30:49it's still awesome though
- 30:51um dissertations are
- 30:52overrated and holly has an
- 30:56edd which I think is a
- 30:58doctorate of education um
- 31:01and then jay birch says
- 31:02thanks holly just another
- 31:03hoop to jump through
- 31:05Yeah, when I finished my master's degree,
- 31:07I came home,
- 31:09I threw my books down and I said,
- 31:11I am never, ever, ever, ever, never, ever,
- 31:14ever going back to school again.
- 31:16And I've kept that promise.
- 31:19When I was getting my master's,
- 31:20I had a newborn baby and my
- 31:23wife and I almost got a divorce.
- 31:26It was so hard finishing.
- 31:30Um, and my final project was a huge,
- 31:37I got my master's, my MBA,
- 31:39and it was a comparison of, um, gosh,
- 31:43it was so stupid.
- 31:44Um, sit down restaurants.
- 31:47Um,
- 31:47and I had to do an analysis of the
- 31:49Outback Steakhouse family.
- 31:51And then I had partners that
- 31:52had to do other ones like, um,
- 31:57whatever group owned like
- 31:58Applebee's and whatever had
- 31:59Ruby Tuesdays and the whatever.
- 32:03And then we had to do a
- 32:04comparison between all of it.
- 32:06And man,
- 32:08it took me from getting home from
- 32:10work till the very minute I
- 32:12went to bed for six straight weeks.
- 32:15Never saw my wife.
- 32:16My daughter would actually
- 32:17play by my feet as I was
- 32:18sitting by the computer typing up stuff.
- 32:21I just, I am done.
- 32:23I will never, ever,
- 32:24ever go back to school again.
- 32:30Um, Holly said, that's good.
- 32:32I just collected degrees for
- 32:33some silly reason.
- 32:38She had three in middle and
- 32:40high school during PhD work.
- 32:42and you know, what's crazy for me is my,
- 32:44my MBA.
- 32:44I've not even,
- 32:46I have not even used it once
- 32:47since I got it.
- 32:48I,
- 32:48I say that like I've used some of the
- 32:50theories and like just life
- 32:52and like doing this podcast
- 32:53and creating like some
- 32:54structure behind the backend, but like,
- 32:57it's never gotten me a promotion.
- 32:59It's never gotten me any
- 32:59more money in my paycheck.
- 33:01Um, all of that stuff.
- 33:03Um, man,
- 33:06all it is is a piece of paper and
- 33:07a frame.
- 33:08Uh,
- 33:10It sits behind actually the flag,
- 33:13the Glassman quote flag in
- 33:14my podcast center.
- 33:16You can't even see it.
- 33:17That's so crazy.
- 33:20ACR, that sounds so sad.
- 33:21Sometimes the hard work isn't worth it.
- 33:25I agree.
- 33:25I really...
- 33:27Yeah, I had a change of perspectives.
- 33:29I really,
- 33:31I wanted to move up and move up
- 33:33and move up in the state of Ohio,
- 33:35like to very high positions politically.
- 33:38And then I just,
- 33:40I had a change of heart
- 33:42that that is not what I wanted.
- 33:43I didn't like the
- 33:44prioritization that that required.
- 33:46And then the NBA became
- 33:50useless to me after I had
- 33:52changed that perspective.
- 33:55Um,
- 33:55happiness is more than money and I
- 33:59don't know, power, I guess.
- 34:01And, uh,
- 34:02I just learned that being with my
- 34:03family was made me more
- 34:04happy than any of that stuff.
- 34:07And, uh,
- 34:07and maybe it took going through
- 34:09the MBA and all that stuff
- 34:10for me to realize it.
- 34:14Um,
- 34:15but it was an expensive lesson to learn.
- 34:17I will say that.
- 34:19I will say that.
- 34:25um thanks jay birch yeah um
- 34:30and man I love my life
- 34:32today so I wouldn't I
- 34:33wouldn't change anything I
- 34:34guess I just I wish I
- 34:35wasn't in the debt I was in
- 34:37from paying for all that
- 34:38school but um but yeah I
- 34:41love where I am today so
- 34:43glad I I got here through
- 34:45any route possible but
- 34:48anyway this is the first
- 34:49episode of our lunch with the glidesdale
- 34:52We're going to do these
- 34:54every day that I can.
- 34:55I will tell you that I do
- 34:57have some commitments over
- 34:58the next couple weeks,
- 34:59although I'll probably miss
- 35:00a day or two here or there.
- 35:02But we're going to do these every day.
- 35:03Just hang out.
- 35:04If there's any subjects you
- 35:06want to talk about that's
- 35:06going on in the world, going on in sports,
- 35:09going on in whatever,
- 35:11It's just a place for us to
- 35:12hang out and chat about
- 35:13things that are going on.
- 35:15And I can't wait to do this more and more.
- 35:18And I want to get more
- 35:19comfortable that if I have
- 35:20to jump on here by myself,
- 35:21that I can carry the show
- 35:23for whatever length that is to do that.
- 35:26And yeah,
- 35:27so I'm going to take my
- 35:28lunch hours uh to do that
- 35:31thank you so much for being
- 35:32here guys uh you guys are
- 35:34awesome as always jay birch
- 35:36acr holly um kenneth
- 35:39whoever's here it's still
- 35:41awesome we will see you
- 35:42guys uh tomorrow with that bye guys
