Transcript
- 0:01The sun is shining cloud in the sky. We wouldn't know because we're so
- 0:07happy inside. Some peoples, but we would rather sit on down and talk
- 0:16some movies. We're the Avid Indoorsmen. Come listen to our show. We're
- 0:22the Avid Indoorsmen at home on the go. We're the Avidendorsmen. We hope
- 0:29you love it, so come on in and stay. We'll do our best
- 0:34to make you smile the indors What is happening? I'm Rob blood Quist good,
- 0:42I'm Boots, and we are the Avid Indoorsman. Hello everyone, Hello,
- 0:48Hello, how are you sir? I'm doing so well. How are
- 0:51you? I'm good? Thank you for asking. Oh my god, did
- 0:55you get a haircut too? I did, thank you you as well.
- 0:59I was complimenting you earlier and I was like, I wonder if you's going
- 1:02to notice mine? I was. I was only focused on myself, But
- 1:06now now here I am. I head tune and just eyes full of love
- 1:11for your beautiful hair. Look at things you go to someone though I do.
- 1:18I go to a guy. I would never be able to do this.
- 1:22No, no, The only reason I do it myself is all I
- 1:25do is buzz it off. Buzz it because there's like none of it anyway,
- 1:30so it works out great for me. We have not talked, like
- 1:37at least we've texted, man, but I need to talk to you about
- 1:41now. Maybe this won't matter to any of our listeners, but it's exciting
- 1:46for Minnesota sports. You'll be happy that we're happy. That's what I think
- 1:49we're I'm ecstatic, bro, me too. I legitimately am stunned by the
- 1:55Minnesota Timberwolves. They are. They're freaking me out a little bit. If
- 1:57I'm honest, they're freaking me out. I then, you know, spent
- 2:01a lot of today listening to all the people talking and everybody just jinxing us
- 2:08hard. But it's like, it's hard not to get excited about it.
- 2:12Yes, I want to enjoy it, but I'm also like, please,
- 2:15I've been hurt before. Please, But yes, for the people listening,
- 2:23our Minnesota Timberwolves have not lost a playoff game. They have only dominated and
- 2:30it's just been weird and scary and lovely and the best and the scariest.
- 2:37It's so amazing, it really is. We just haven't The Timberwolves have never
- 2:40had anything like this. Closest we've had to it was twenty years ago with
- 2:45Cage. Oh yeah, twenty years ago. Yeah yeah, oh three or
- 2:47four yep. And but you know we're going up against Shaq and Kobe,
- 2:53so that it just was not like but I mean, this is school.
- 2:57But and as soon as Sam Cassell got heard, it was like, oh,
- 3:00well, it's just over that's a bummer. But so it's pretty exciting
- 3:05over here. I'm so pumped and we're doing it to the champs from last
- 3:08year. I mean, it's just nuts. It's so great. It's crazy.
- 3:13I love Aunt and everybody's yeah, everybody's talking about Aunt being the next
- 3:16Michael Jordan, which is just like pretty blasphemous, like, but it's fun.
- 3:23It happened to someone, why can't it be us? That's true.
- 3:27I had a dream they won the title last night. Oh my gosh.
- 3:30I happy dream comes true. I want it to happen so bad and the
- 3:35whole time and I don't want this part to be true. But the whole
- 3:37time I was like, I just don't think it's gonna happen, man,
- 3:39And then it happened, and I was like, oh my god. Yeah.
- 3:44Well and also right before the game, the defensive player of the year
- 3:47Rudy Gore said, uh, you know what, my baby's being born.
- 3:53I can't be at the game. And I was like, no, Sam,
- 3:57I mean, way to go, but yeah, I love it today
- 4:00for you. We've we haven't been here forever. Please And then it turned
- 4:08out, Yeah, I still probably would been nice to have them, but
- 4:13it went fine. I could do an entire episode on this. We probably
- 4:17shouldn't. That's not what they're here for, to put everybody to bed.
- 4:20But just know that we're excited about our Timberwolves. Yes, if you don't
- 4:24have a dog in the fight, root for our tea Wolves. Yes,
- 4:27yeah, for real, Jump on board, Jump on board. Well a
- 4:31lot of Minnesotans are right now, but I want to know what was the
- 4:36last movie you Well, you know this. This makes sense that we're talking
- 4:40about it because a lot of people are, you know, blaming the refs.
- 4:43They're blaming you know, Jamal's uh, you know, its calf injury.
- 4:47Everybody's looking for a fall guy, which is what I went and saw
- 4:51in the theater. It's out, it's out. You haven't seen it then,
- 4:55obviously, no, I mean I kind of forgot to text you after
- 5:00I saw it, But I totally forgot as well myself. Yeah we went
- 5:03opening night. Oh my gosh, did it you just come out this weekend?
- 5:08Yeah, we saw it on Thursday, so yes, yes it did.
- 5:15This is, of course the movie with the Baby Goose and Emily Blunt,
- 5:19all about a stuntman. It's, oh coincidentally, it's about actors playing
- 5:26actors and things in the movie business, which turns out nicely. This movie
- 5:32is tons of fun. I loved it. I had a great time.
- 5:38It is pretty dumb, Like I don't want anyone to think like it's not
- 5:42like a masterful movie, but it's really fun and I think I think you
- 5:46specifically will very much enjoy it. The trailers had me if you liked the
- 5:51trailers, I don't know how you couldn't like the movie, because it's it's
- 5:55silly. It's a reference to itself and till you know movies in general,
- 6:00with like with love, you know there it's like, this is kind of
- 6:03dumb, but we all love it and we know that, you know,
- 6:06I just really like it. Baby Goose is great as always, Emily Plants
- 6:11great as always. Yeah, and it's a pretty stacked and packed cast.
- 6:16Otherwise too, we got what is her full name, Hannah Wadding loading Ham.
- 6:24Oh yeah, from Ted Ted Lasto's in it. That Aaron Taylor Johnson
- 6:30is in it, Winston Duke who we love so much, Winston Black,
- 6:36Panther, and several other things. Yeah, right at this point, right,
- 6:43it's just a ton of other people that you guess will know and love
- 6:46as well. And yeah, it's a it's a I think it's rated.
- 6:49Awe, No, it's PG thirteen, Okay. I was like, is
- 6:51it all? Okay? It's just a comedy action, silly, fun,
- 6:56good time movie and I liked it a lot and based off of a television
- 7:01show I guess back now, I did not know that until recently. Time.
- 7:06I think you so too. But yeah, it's it's fun and I
- 7:11could see them maybe making another one too. They just have really great chemistry
- 7:15and it's fun, so like, why not in a way, Yeah,
- 7:19but we'll see Tom'll sell But yeah, I really I'm enjoyed it a lot,
- 7:24and I think you will too. I want to see it. What
- 7:27is the most recent movie you have seen. I've been on a guy Ritchie
- 7:31kick recently. I just binge the Gentleman series on Netflix Watch and went to
- 7:36the theater the other day to see The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and I
- 7:42loved it all good. That's what I want to see and I haven't been
- 7:45able to yet. You will love it. So I didn't know a ton
- 7:49about it going in and saw that it was set back in the day,
- 7:53and I knew Henry Cavill and Alan Richson from Reacher in it. Yes,
- 7:58that was all I knew. I he's a Gonzalez, isn't it as well?
- 8:03She does a great choice and she's gorgeous. We got Carrie Elwis and
- 8:09Henry Golding they're also in there. But it's about like a real secret mission
- 8:15that happened during World War Two. I heard about that later too, and
- 8:18I was surprised by that. That's pretty crazy. Had no idea, I
- 8:20honestly, from the trailer. I thought it was set way back, like,
- 8:26yeah, when they're using boats, you know, like horses, right
- 8:31exactly. So I was surprised when I was like, oh, it's World
- 8:35War Two. I thought it was set further back, but extremely entertaining.
- 8:41I thought it was a ton of fun. I hope more people check it
- 8:43out because it deserves to be watched and talked about that's cool and man,
- 8:50I just I'm really loving me some guy rich. Yeah, well he's I
- 8:54love it awesome, So that makes sense. He does so many cool things,
- 8:58so many different things too. I feel like, yes, all over
- 9:01the place, really can do a little bit of everything, which is really
- 9:05fun. Yeah. I would highly recommend nice. I will have to go
- 9:07check that out. I might go see it them this week and maybe ooh
- 9:11fun, you should you should love it. What have you been streaming?
- 9:16So I mission accomplished? Rabu four, May the fourth be with you.
- 9:22I finished all of Star Wars the Clone Wars. Wow. I actually quite
- 9:26enjoyed it by the end of it, But I did I crammed a lot
- 9:31in the last like two weeks before that. Tell the listeners how long this
- 9:37was? So I think I did it on the twenty first of April before
- 9:45May fourth, so two weeks and I watched four seasons I think in that
- 9:50two weeks and about how many episodes do you think? So? I think
- 9:54two of the seasons were twenty four and then two or thirteen, which hurt.
- 10:01Hurt. It's hurt when I saw the twenty or maybe like twenty three
- 10:03and twenty two but you know whatever, at that point, it is so
- 10:07many, dude, It's so many. And I didn't even watch, Like
- 10:11I went and saw my family for a couple of those days, and I
- 10:15really didn't watch any of those days, so like I packed it in the
- 10:18other days. Wow, it was really something, but I enjoyed it and
- 10:22it was fun. I did it because a Meal and a Chance have been
- 10:28trying to get me to watch it for a long time and I sort of
- 10:31started and stopped a couple of times, and there was like, you just
- 10:33got to push through a little bit. I think you'll like it, and
- 10:35they were right. I did. I ended up really liking it. I've
- 10:37actually started Rebels now since then, another animated one. But it was fun.
- 10:45It was a lot, though. It was a lot, so uh,
- 10:48yeah, I think it was worth doing. I wouldn't recommend like that
- 10:52you have to do it, because I don't think you liked that stuff nearly
- 10:54as much. Yeah, I will not do so, but I'm glad you
- 10:58guys all enjoyed it. Yeah, and it was fun. It was really
- 11:00fun to get to I actually finished a day early to make it even work
- 11:05nice. But I was like, so I texted, we have a big
- 11:09group thread and I was like, so, would you guys rather have a
- 11:13gift the day it was intended for or early if that's what it was.
- 11:16And they were like, what are you talking about? And I was like,
- 11:20I'm just gonna tell you now. I was like I finished it.
- 11:22And they were like what because they thought like chance Legit was like he's just
- 11:28never gonna watch it now, like we lost him, you know, which
- 11:31they were kind of bummed about. But uh yeah, so we had we
- 11:35had fun. We talked about it. Then I got to like give them
- 11:37all of my boohoos and you know reactions because I wasn't telling them in time,
- 11:43you know, and all that stuff, so they were geeking out.
- 11:46It was fun. It was a good time. Oh that's fun. That
- 11:48was fun. How about you? Have you been sturream and things? I
- 11:52have? I've been streaming the new Apple TV Plus show Sugar. Oh I
- 11:56want to check that out. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty great man.
- 12:00So it's Colin Farrell as a private investigator. It definitely has the feel of
- 12:05an old noir, a mystery type, like like multi Falcon or something,
- 12:13but it's present day and much brighter, so it's not one of those like,
- 12:18you know, totally dreary, dark ones. You know, everything is
- 12:22Mason is right, Perry Mason is kind of like that too, really dark
- 12:28Gravestones that Liam Neeson was in. Did you ever see that just a like
- 12:35a walker the Gravestones or something that was a film, right, yes,
- 12:39and it was very noir as well. Yeah. Sorry, but this this
- 12:45one is it's like bright and it's set in l A, you know,
- 12:48so it's like kind of cheery even though it's pretty dark subject stuff. But
- 12:54his character is really fun. He's like a big movie buff and his case
- 12:58is dealing with movie people, so it's like kind of a fun plot.
- 13:03And there's a good supporting cast with a bunch of people you know but might
- 13:07not know their names, like Sugar Sugar his name is like John Sugar,
- 13:13yes, but like Amy Ryan from the Office and a gun who was on
- 13:20Breaking Bad, Kirby from The Good Place. So it's a lot of people.
- 13:24Yeah, those like ancillary people that were great but yeah, cool but
- 13:31not like huge names. But it's super well done. I've seen five episodes
- 13:35so far. I think there are six out. Uh, they come out
- 13:39every Friday and you know they Yeah, so it's like one a week or
- 13:43whatever. But I'm really enjoying it so far. That's cool. I mean
- 13:48he's great, so that makes sense that he's wonderful. I'm really I'm into
- 13:52Colin Farrell Man. He's very talented. Like he's another one that's just doing
- 13:56like you never know what this guy's gonna do. He's throwing a lot in
- 14:00there. He's he's the penguin in the Batman you know, likes going on.
- 14:05Yeah, that's going to be exciting. Yeah, I'm super interested to
- 14:09see if that'll be fun or not. Yeah. I didn't love that movie
- 14:11for something. I know you did. I don't know what different on that,
- 14:16but you and Tim were in the same but Chance and I were.
- 14:18Yeah, we were into it. And I don't think you guys are wrong.
- 14:22It just didn't hit me at the same way, you know what I
- 14:22mean. It's weird. Yeah, but anyway, Yeah, Yeah, well
- 14:26fun buddy, that's super fake. Should we do if you plug rounies you
- 14:30think? Yes? Please? Okay, you guys can find us as always
- 14:33over on the Twitter Machine where we're at Avid Indoorsmen with a Z, or
- 14:37you can go to Facebook dot com slash the Aventendorsment. We're also available on
- 14:41Instagram and TikTok at the Avidendorsment there as well. But if you really want
- 14:46to hang out and be part of the crew, spot to go is patreon
- 14:50dot com slash the Avid Endorsment. Yeah, it's so much fun over on
- 14:54Patreon. We love our patrons. We give him a lot of perks,
- 14:56and one of those is getting a shout out here. Let's give it for
- 15:00Marsha Grease yet, Mary Fox, Nanette Walkley, Ruth Cood, Johan Broasted,
- 15:05Jackie Houston, deb Olk, and Noel Flores. You guys are wonderful.
- 15:09Thank you for your patroness. Yeah. Another perk we like to give
- 15:13is our h We like to do an extended version of every episode that we
- 15:16put out. We do a top five draft that pertains to that movie.
- 15:20Yes, and for this one, Bukes kind of alluded to it earlier,
- 15:24but we're going to do our top five movies where someone plays an actor.
- 15:28Ooh, and there's some fun ones, really good ones, some really fun
- 15:33ones, and some sneaky ones. I bet that I didn't think of.
- 15:37So I'm I'm pretty pumped me too. Here, we guys say, yeah,
- 15:39that should be fun. I love that should be ah coming attractions.
- 15:45I haven't been doing this, and the reason is I never know what's next.
- 15:46But this time I do. This time you do because it's Indiana Jones
- 15:50and the Last Crusade, which I definitely knew before I started that sentence not
- 15:54halfway through. Which Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It's going to be
- 16:00a ton of fun. I can't wait to chat about that. But that's
- 16:03fifth anniversary, Yes it is. Yeah, well I suppose that makes sense.
- 16:07Eighty nine. That makes sense. Well, then that means that this
- 16:11one, this movie we're here to talk about today, is having its twenty
- 16:14ninth anniversary, twenty fifth, twenty fifth. I meant the nine is what
- 16:18I thought connected them doing pretty well over here. But we're here today to
- 16:22talk about Nodding Hill, and we had to get just just the sweetest little
- 16:29teddy bear we could find to come back with us in chat today. He's
- 16:32one of our all time favorites. Let's welcome him back, Timmy saying somber,
- 16:37what's up, Timmy? Hey guys, huh, so good to see
- 16:41you, buddy. It's good to see you. It's so good to see
- 16:45you, and it's really good to be seen. Oh man. For the
- 16:48listeners at home, we had a little bit of technical difficulties. We couldn't
- 16:52see Timmy's beautiful face, and now we can and life is good. I
- 16:56almost quit the podcast. I was like, I'm not going to going forward
- 17:00if we can't see him, I'm out. We persevered. You see how
- 17:04handsome he. It's got a Patreon dot com slash the ave endorsement. I
- 17:07love that nice plug. That love it. We have plugs. Yeah,
- 17:14I should get plugs. Stop it now it's an option. Beautiful. Oh,
- 17:19I know that I would be more beautiful. Let's let's talk about this
- 17:23great movie. Yeah, we're so happy to have you here. Do you
- 17:27have any any anecdotes or stories you want to regale us with right off the
- 17:30bat or should we just get going If you don't, I just want to
- 17:34say Timmy. At the very beginning, we did talk about how amazing the
- 17:37Timberwolves are, and Timmy is also a big hit us. Yes, are
- 17:42you so excited? And Edwards is the new Michael Jordan. This is the
- 17:47best basketball team to ever have existed. Yeah, yes, we're gonna sweep
- 17:51the playoffs and Jamal Murray is a mean, mean, mean guy. Yeah,
- 17:56agree, butthead he uh, we've all had as our moments, so
- 18:03I tend to be more forgiving, especially if he's shooting three for fifteen.
- 18:07The suspension might have helped the nuggets. Yeah, we'll see he's playing it,
- 18:12so we'll find out. We will Friday night. Friday Night. Now,
- 18:18that's how I got tim Rose and nodding Hill is life? Love it?
- 18:22That's great. Well, let's go on to the second part of that,
- 18:26which is directly relolated to the timber Wolves. I also sounded drunk.
- 18:30Theres am I okay, both hands are up. Okay, cool, We're
- 18:38good, Uh, fantastic. Let's talk about notting Hill and Rob. Would
- 18:44you get to start with just a rough sadopsy East, I would love to,
- 18:47okay. William Thacker is a London bookstore owner who's humdrum existence is thrown
- 18:52into romantic turmoil when famous American actress Anna Scott appears in his shop. A
- 18:57chance encounter overspilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full blown
- 19:03affair. As the average bloke and a glamorous movie star draw closer and closer
- 19:08together, they struggled to reconcile. They're radically different lifestyles in the name of
- 19:15love. I love it. Great, it's the movie, Thank you job.
- 19:19Yeah, that's the whole thing. Let's go to Rotten Tomatos and hear
- 19:22what they have to say. Critics have is coming in at a pretty solid
- 19:25eighty four percent. Not mad at eighty four percent for rom Com. Yeah,
- 19:30I thought it was nice audience members. I was a little surprised by
- 19:33lower than that at seventy nine, so still fresh. But seventy do we
- 19:38have that is shocking. I really wouldn't even Yeah, yeah, I have
- 19:44no idea why that's crazy. I don't think I've ever met anyone that was
- 19:47like this movie sucked. Yeah, people are like that's not really my thing,
- 19:51or like rock core. It's like they took a wrong period of the
- 19:55theater. They wanted to see Predator or something, and they end up in
- 19:56notting Hill and they were a little disappointed at the lack of blood outside of
- 20:00the blood and Spake shirt. Right, Spike had some, he did,
- 20:04that's true, and a dinosaur. So the Jurassic Park that doesn't love this
- 20:10movie, well, fools and maybe us we'll find out because it's not time
- 20:15for our hot take. Hot take spicy a spicy curry takeout. That's a
- 20:23hot take. That's a hot take, they say, take away, take
- 20:30away British friends. Yes, naturally, it's fun. That's fun. I
- 20:36will go first. I came to this movie kind of late in life.
- 20:40This is only like the third time I've ever seen it or something. I
- 20:45think the first time I watched it was a couple of years ago as well.
- 20:48I didn't know that about you. Yeah, I don't know why I
- 20:51missed this one early on for some reason. Doesn't make any sense because it's
- 20:55right up my alley, and it turns out I love it, So I've
- 21:00just cherished it every time i've seen it since. It's really really fun.
- 21:03I think it is quintessential rom com city. There's so much fun stuff happening.
- 21:08There's a lot of like angsty will they won't they? You know,
- 21:14we've got Hugh doing his Hugh thing. They're British, so there's a lot
- 21:18of dry humor. It's really fun like it a lot a lot. There
- 21:23is some cheesy ass music in this movie. Uh, and I love every
- 21:27second of it. So score or soundtrack, soundtrack, it's cheesy. What
- 21:37is the main one? No, No, Elvis Costello recorded and we disagree.
- 21:48I don't know if you guys heard me. I said it's super cheesy,
- 21:52but I love it. There's nothing cheesy about Elvis Costello ever. I
- 21:56mean that's he's like the least cheesy person. Oh no, no, what
- 22:00I use it in this movie. It's kind of you sound stupid and frankly
- 22:04it's your friend. I need you to stop because you're you're not making me
- 22:08sound stupid. I love that song. It like chokes me. And it's
- 22:15cheesy when you hey, here's my wife. She's cheesy. My love her,
- 22:21but she's you don't lead with cheesy if you love her, is what
- 22:23I was saying to me. You find me all put a ring on it.
- 22:26That's all I'm saying. I love cheese. Okay, this got off
- 22:32to a weird start. I'm so sorry. OK that's okay. In that
- 22:37song in a great way. Uh. I also had a very similar green
- 22:42corduroy jacket that I wore a number of times that he has in this and
- 22:48it's I don't look as good as he does, but you know, we're
- 22:51trying out here, we're really making it work. I'm trying remember that jacket.
- 22:56No I can jacket. Sure. Sure he's so cool, is we?
- 23:00I'm really bat in a thousand over here. My hottest take, I
- 23:03didn't have one, but apparently I do. It's the that's a hot take.
- 23:11I love this movie though. I think it's really well acted. I
- 23:14think it's really fun. They have fantastic chemistry. I think it's a neat
- 23:21power dynamic that we don't always see in these rom coms, which is kind
- 23:26of fun. And because I saw it late, I don't know how it
- 23:30fell in sort of the pantheon of rom coms, you know, during if
- 23:33it was unique in that way or anything, but it was just kind of
- 23:37a fun thing I'd never seen. Well, perhaps my hottest take is a
- 23:41bookstore that only sells travel books is a very niche market. And I'm a
- 23:47man who made a living as an a cappella singer for quite some times,
- 23:49so like, you know, like maybe we expand I don't know. Yeah,
- 23:55I like that. I like that. I'm sure a lot of people
- 23:56have made that shoke, but yeah, that's my hot take. Take Buddy
- 24:00so High. This is an awesome movie. I've loved it since it came
- 24:03out. We've seen it many times. This is written by Richard Curtis,
- 24:08who has written a bunch of great things. We've done two other episodes on
- 24:12films he's written in about time and love. Actually, Dude kills it.
- 24:18I always enjoy his writing. He brings in just enough sap with a bunch
- 24:22of humor, chokes me up, makes me laugh, does it brilliantly.
- 24:27It's directed by Roger Mitchell, who has made some other notable films, but
- 24:30this one is by far my favorite for I think this is a perfect cast.
- 24:37Not all huge names, but everyone fit their role perfectly. I thought
- 24:42the soundtrack was killer with Elvis Costello song She. It also features Bill Withers,
- 24:55who I love, Al Green who I love this song when You Say
- 24:59Nothing at All. However, I didn't love that version of it like the
- 25:03one with the gal I don't know it. Yeah, that version's amazing.
- 25:10Give me some Lovin' which is great in the background of the chase scene.
- 25:14And then of course Shania Twain the Queen. I don't have too much else
- 25:21to say. I love this movie. It makes me feel good. This
- 25:22is a top ten rom com for me, and if I had to really
- 25:26think it might even be top five for me. I love this movie.
- 25:30Have we drafted rom coms before? I think we have? And maybe I
- 25:34didn't take. I wonder if you picked I'm gonna look at that hot take.
- 25:40I do have a hot take. I think there's one too many heartbreaks
- 25:44for me. It could have edited out another fifteen minutes, maybe one less
- 25:48sad montage. Yeah. I also think that while the last scene is very
- 25:53romantic and I love the press conference, after she says she's staying indefinitely,
- 26:00they then smile at each other for so long and the camera just goes back
- 26:07like four times and it like WAPs over that it would seem like they were
- 26:12doing it to be silly, right. It started to make me feel weird.
- 26:15It's a weird at it. There's I didn't notice that. That's great.
- 26:22There's a scene in Garden Stay speaking of around comes that that I have
- 26:25a door where he first plays the shins for her. He puts his headphones
- 26:30on her at the doctor's office. Cool. And the commentary is Zach Braff
- 26:34and Natalie Portman. A great commentary if you're in the commentaries, and uh,
- 26:38she hates it because it is that scene where it shows him watching her,
- 26:41then it shows her listening to the music smiling, and it repeats it
- 26:45like three times, and it's so weird. Like when I watched this,
- 26:48I thought of that immediately, Like Hully Roberts. It's just smiling, which
- 26:51if you're gonna have someone to sit there and smile for three minutes like Julia
- 26:56Roberts, but yeah, it is. It is a lot of looking and
- 26:59smiling. Yep. That weirded me out, and I hadn't noticed it before
- 27:03this take, But that's funny. That's my hottest take. You did pick
- 27:07notting Hill in the common look at I wasn't lying. You're number three.
- 27:14Wow. I love it when you're consistent. Boom, you know your pick
- 27:18A second going to America. I think we could pick. I think we've
- 27:23just done it aggressive stretch, but it's more more calm than rom probably,
- 27:30but uh, there's definitely rom in there. There's some rom. There's there's
- 27:33a ram and heat. I went drafted in there round. I'm just saying,
- 27:37there's the common heat, all right, unless and heat you got denro
- 27:45with h with what's your name? Yeah? Great, it's a great it's
- 27:48actually really nice to romantic story. Within that phenomenal movie, but not comedy
- 27:56the yeah, yeah, different different, All right, we are all over
- 28:00the place, Timmy. What's your hot take, buddy? What do we
- 28:03got? Guys? I can't tell you, Like I can't overstate how much
- 28:07I loved this movie. I was thinking back and there's a chance and I'm
- 28:11having a hard time reconciling it with some other stuff that came out before it.
- 28:15But I would say this might have been my favorite movie of all time
- 28:18for a hot minute. We were like ninth tenth grade when it came out.
- 28:22I love this movie. And I don't know why I love this movie.
- 28:26I don't remember being like genre aware, Like I didn't know I liked
- 28:27rom coms. I don't know. I just went to Hollywood and grabbed whatever
- 28:32was in the new release section with a big famous person on the cover.
- 28:38But yeah, I loved it. I mean you could say I was just
- 28:41a boy, you know, standing in front of his TV wondering why I
- 28:45love this movie so much? And I did. Look. You said it
- 28:49was a quintessential common It has some of some of the main ingredients. Two
- 28:53leads. When you need two leads in your homcomon, they're at the top
- 28:56of their game, doing what they do best classic meat cute and actually like
- 29:02a series of meat cutes that are progressively more cute, which is phenomenal,
- 29:07eclectic class cast off supporting characters or ib you called it out, and then
- 29:11I literally wrote down a killer soundtrack that's like my first word, so bugs
- 29:15you suck? Uh? The I love it has three points. You guys
- 29:26didn't hear me say it because I'm sorry. Uh, and Rob named all
- 29:32the people, but I specifically loved how was deployed a book ending the film
- 29:36with she and then one of the great scenes in the movie, the dinner
- 29:40party scene, has book ended with when you say nothing at all and it's
- 29:42uh, it's it's very affecting the way that they use the music. Uh,
- 29:49this is a killer soundtrack. But the first track on the soundtrack is
- 29:52from a group called Boyzone, So there are some there are some cheesy songs
- 29:56to it. That's I think they had. They had a ninety eight degree
- 30:02song on there as well. Yeah, that was my buddy Nicola was in
- 30:04it. It's We're more cool, we text more than people know. And
- 30:11the last ingredient, the most important is the classic professional love and you know,
- 30:15I'll argue that it's probably not as great as it's remembered by some,
- 30:19but it is memorable. Oh it's pretty great though. Yeah, So I
- 30:23love this movie and looking back or ib also alluded to it. But I'm
- 30:27learning, and I learned at a pretty early age that I love it so
- 30:32much more than likely because Richard Curtis has the keys to my heart. That
- 30:36man could write anything. And I haven't even seen all of his movies,
- 30:38but every other movie I watch it like unlocks different feels and I love him
- 30:44so much. A movie, it's like a perfect movie. Yeah, did
- 30:52you guys? Did you guys do best father son movies? I feel like
- 30:57we have, But I don't know that that feels like that. That would
- 31:00be the draft. It's a good father So, oh my god, that
- 31:04movie kills me speaking that. My dad just called me some funny story on
- 31:08that hill, hi Will. Yeah, I love this movie. It's great,
- 31:15great, hot takes around all around. Well, let's go into our
- 31:18favorite acting performance. Let's name the dude. I'm the dude. So that's
- 31:25what you call me, you know that, or his dude or duder or
- 31:32you know el dudo reno. If you're not into the whole brevity thing.
- 31:34Let me keep it going. Who's your dude? Oh my gosh, I've
- 31:37been talking so much. This was the hardest one. I've been on this
- 31:40pod a few times, and this is by far the hardest because it's it's
- 31:42neck and neck two horse race. On the one hand, it's my favorite
- 31:47Hugh Grant performance of all time, and he's perfect in it, Like he's
- 31:49just great, as huge granty as he could possibly be, and it's great.
- 31:56You must not have seen the New Wonka movie because he's an When I've
- 32:00not seen it, I'm not. And I heard he didn't love making that
- 32:04movie. Yep, I think he's grumpy. I think I think he is
- 32:08kind of grumpy. Yeah. He On the other hand, for the dude,
- 32:15you have Julia Roberts, who does a lot of heavy liftings. She
- 32:17has to be a movie star and be believable as a movie star, which
- 32:21isn't a stretch, but doing it within the you know, confines of a
- 32:25film is takes some work. But then she also has to make it believable
- 32:30that she, you know, swooped down and fall in love with the travel
- 32:35store bookstore owner, which is again a weird thing to do for a living.
- 32:42So I went back and forth my deciding factor and I changed it last
- 32:46minute. But the climax of this film is her speech in the bookstore.
- 32:52Yep, just a girl standing in front of a boy. Everybody knows that
- 32:55line. That line doesn't hit, and none of their the movie hits if
- 33:00Hugh Grant doesn't sell. Him shutting her down and basically telling Anna Scott a
- 33:07movie starr that he is in love with no because he's afraid it would what
- 33:14The line's great, we'll get to it later, but that it would well
- 33:17buggered basically is how it ends. Right. But it's a it's a great
- 33:22line, and it sets up her line without without him shutting her down.
- 33:24She can't drop that line. And then the movie doesn't go on because on
- 33:28the next scene, you know, he realizes what he's done, and then
- 33:31it has the whole chase and it's beautiful. And I think, uh,
- 33:35I think him acting, even though it's a lot more nuanced than you know,
- 33:38her range that she gets to do, but him acting and having the
- 33:43audience believe that he's actually saying no to her, I think it's it's brilliant.
- 33:47I think in less capable hands it, it falls flat, and the
- 33:51movie pays for it grants due. Yeah, I disagree. No, I
- 34:00just I feel like this movie does not work without a superstar like Julia Roberts
- 34:05in that role. She was the perfect casting choice for this film. She's
- 34:09so beautiful and funny, and you you feel like you see a little insight
- 34:15into who Julia Roberts is and how she has to deal with fame and paparazzi
- 34:20and everyone knowing her dating life, and how difficult it must be to live
- 34:24a normal life. Yeah, I picked her. She's wonderful. But I
- 34:30agree with what you're talking about with you Grant as well. I just I
- 34:36feel like this movie really doesn't work without her. It's fair. Yeah,
- 34:39I'm closer to Ropside. I picked Julia Roberts for all those same reasons.
- 34:44I just think she's iridescent as a star. She's wonderful. I also have
- 34:51I think it's kind of weird that I got my throat stomped in for saying
- 34:54the soundtrack thing and Timmy just said this line doesn't work, which is insane,
- 35:00But okay, fine, just now I said it doesn't work without Hugh
- 35:06green Out a harder stance but you said earlier, you don't. I think
- 35:10the Lions wildly overrated, Like it's it's that's crazy. I did love that
- 35:15line. It doesn't it doesn't land for me, but yeah, I was
- 35:20just being silly pants anyway, it doesn't work pants without Hugh certainly that's true.
- 35:27Yeah, I do agree. I like you in this movie a lot,
- 35:30but same. Julia Roberts is just she's perfect. They're both great,
- 35:34so fun. It's great she has to be vulnerable, but also like you
- 35:37get to see her put her guard up a couple of times too, which
- 35:40is really fun. I just feel like she gets to do a lot in
- 35:43this and that's that's pretty fun. So I'll take her. She's my dude.
- 35:47Nice. Well, let's let's go into this uh supporting cast we were
- 35:52talking about, let's pick the award to get this one. A lot of
- 35:59great supporting characters. It's so good and like the smallest part are just topped
- 36:06about them perfectly cast. For me, I like a movie with a good
- 36:10glue guy that you know, there's a lot going on outside of the main
- 36:15characters, and a good glue guy kind of ties that all together and brings
- 36:19it home at the end. And for me, it's Honey a. She's
- 36:23the only person that really gets to like fangirl out with Julia Roberts and you
- 36:28needed someone in the group of friends to do it. It's perfect. It's
- 36:30her, it was which normalizes the other people that can make them seem more
- 36:37you know, above that and make Julia Roberts and Scott feel more comfortable with
- 36:43them. And then she also brings it back and ties and Spike, which
- 36:47you know, he's so wild and he's so out there, but it totally
- 36:52makes sense that they end up together and having him be a part of the
- 36:57climax is really fun and bringing the whole game together. So yeah, it's
- 37:01it's Honey. She does a lot she does. That's a fun pick.
- 37:06I loved her. Everything that she said to Julia Roberts when she first meets
- 37:09her is one of the perfect one of the best lanes of the movie.
- 37:14That one too. I love that. When I think of this movie,
- 37:17I think of Reese Iphens's Spike. Yes, it's one of the best supporting
- 37:24characters in a rom com. Ever, he steals every scene he's in.
- 37:30He's hilarious, means well, but not very smart, and man, I
- 37:37just I don't know. He he made me laugh out loud a few times,
- 37:40so he's gonna win it for me. It's great. He's also basically
- 37:45wearing halter tops, like those shirts are so short, just like, yeah,
- 37:52I love I love both. Those pielos are great, you know,
- 37:57if we're not going to take you gran because I feel like we about him
- 38:00enough into that. Yeah. I really liked Gina McKee as Bella. I
- 38:06thought she did such a good actually her. I'm going to give it to
- 38:08both of them, that mckinnerny, mckinnerney. Maybe it's mckinnerney. Yeah,
- 38:19I don't know anyway, Tam Yeah, Max and Bella. I thought they
- 38:23were just awesome together. Like they're they're obviously flawed, they have, you
- 38:29know, a really deep backstory, you know, with one another, but
- 38:32their love really comes through as very real and also not pandury, which I
- 38:37liked a lot. Like, you know, it wasn't like she's using a
- 38:40wheelchair, let's all feel sorry for her, but it was like, this
- 38:44is a real part of her life and obviously something that's not great in some
- 38:47ways, but also doesn't keep her from living a beautiful life. And he
- 38:52helps with that in a number of ways too. I just I really liked
- 38:55their relationship. They're like they're inner action action, you know, back and
- 39:00forth with you. Grant was amazing, and their friendship was also great.
- 39:04I just sure were awesome. It's funny that brought them up as a pair
- 39:08because I wrote them as a couple, and I kind of like that.
- 39:12They're the Yanda Honey's yang. She's out there and eccentric and a fangirl,
- 39:16and they're very grounded, intelligent, successful, an important, like opposite end
- 39:25to his group of friends that Anna Scott meets and ends up not being scared
- 39:31away by. Yeah, some normal friends. Right when you bring a new
- 39:36girl around, then you have Hugh Bonovilla's Bernie, and he is so funny,
- 39:44doesn't recognize her. That's oblivious, kind of the ass of the group
- 39:50means well, but kind of an ass. But yeah, he he was
- 39:54pretty hilarious and one of the reasons that the friend group was so much fun.
- 40:00He added to that as well. Yeah, and he's gone on to
- 40:04do a bunch of stuff too. I feel like he's he's done well for
- 40:07himself. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, as just mentioned the friend group,
- 40:10I love this friend group because they are so different, and there also
- 40:14different places in their lives and careers, and you know, some are successful,
- 40:19some are really unsuccessful. And it just feels like an old group of
- 40:22friends, because friends you just met are more likely going to be more you
- 40:25know, at the same place you are in life generally, But if you're
- 40:30with the people you're growing up with and you've all gone your separate ways,
- 40:32you end up with this kind of mix of people that are at very different
- 40:37levels. I thought it was well put together. I love that. That's
- 40:43great. Are we doing honro mentions here for it? I just wanted to
- 40:47call out Martin, which is the worker in the bookstore. He's just he's
- 40:54like this facial expression is just he plays that coworker. So I've always been
- 41:00a bit of an ass. So great. I love that. That's a
- 41:06good one. You have more going well, Yeah, jump in. Emily
- 41:12Mortimer as like the perfect girl. I just I love her. I think
- 41:15she is so beautiful and great. Brought me back to the newsroom. I
- 41:20feel like her in a while. Yeah, I felt the same way.
- 41:23I was like, what has she been doing? But she's been in stuff
- 41:27just not stuff I'm watching, I guess or whatever. So for a long
- 41:30time to see her. Sorry for the long time, I thought she was
- 41:34Rass's wife and friends like I that was the same person. Oh sure,
- 41:40they looked very much likeke I think and uh sounded like sure, yeah she
- 41:49she is great. And that was an important character too well such, yeah,
- 41:53such an important thing like people that you there's not a good reason,
- 41:58but also it's to know, you know, like I just feel like as
- 42:01I get older, you know, that makes so much more sense to my
- 42:06brain, like the having that and it sucks, but it's very real.
- 42:09I don't know, I love that. Yeah, I thought it was really
- 42:13fun. We had Alec Baldwin in there for a minute. You know,
- 42:16another movie star, the movie star boyfriend. He plays such a jerk,
- 42:21which is really fun. Little twelve year old Misha Barton, Yeah, that
- 42:27was fun. I didn't remember that at all. I remember. I didn't
- 42:30realize it when I rewatched it either, and I till I reviewed the casters
- 42:34like Misha Martin. Another thing I didn't remember was Clark Peters as one of
- 42:38the the actors in that Helix movie. I didate him down. Yeah,
- 42:49but you know exactly, Yeah, quite a few things now, but yeah,
- 42:52that's where I first really knew him. That's so funny because I was
- 42:58like, he looks really familiar, but I, I can't think of what
- 43:00you say that of course. Yeah. And then that we saw one of
- 43:06the movies that you know that they were watching. Matthew Modine is her co
- 43:12star in that, and I didn't remember that either, so that's kind of
- 43:15fun. And it recognized him. I read that he was in one of
- 43:17the movies. I'm like, which movie? And I went back and I
- 43:22was like, black and white and he's wearing the hat. Yes, and
- 43:25they're like in the in the museum, like the art museum. But oh,
- 43:36I want to see. Why don't you smile? Was the thing?
- 43:38Yeah, I don't have her like what if I told you in five seconds
- 43:43I'm gonna ask you to marry me or whatever? And then she had her
- 43:45big smile. She had a big old smile on her. She poitty,
- 43:52she very poity, lady. Love it. Should we go on and talk
- 43:57about some scenes? I think we should. Let's do the das. The
- 44:00dying so is quite simple, really, dingus, dingus. I could talk
- 44:06about my dingas all night long. Yeah, for this one, there's Spike.
- 44:12It's the dinner party scene. It start to finish again by when you
- 44:15say nothing at all, but you get to meet most of the group of
- 44:20friends, so it's important in that respect you get to it brings Anna Scott
- 44:25down a level, you know, puts her in his court, and especially
- 44:29when you get to the brownie scene, she gets to really kind of lay
- 44:30it out there and be exposed and it brings him up because again, like
- 44:36when you when you bring someone around your group of friends and they're they're great
- 44:38people, and they're they're kind and thoughtful and real, I think that always
- 44:44makes you look good. So it bridges the gap that was between them before
- 44:47that scene, and let's the viewer think this, these two kids might have
- 44:52a chance. Yeah, for sure. And the Brownie the Brownie bits unbelievable,
- 44:57Like top to bottom. Every character just gets to basically own two minutes
- 45:02and shine and they all kill it. Yeah. I love that. It's
- 45:08great. I felt like you were going to say something about it. I
- 45:10was, I don't remember what it was. I also just love that Hugh
- 45:17Boneville straight up asked her how much she made on that movie. It's quite
- 45:24a bit, I'm with you, and it really showcased the friends and the
- 45:29friendship and it's a perfect scene. I thought I was going to be alone
- 45:34on that one, so I'm with you. I would also pick that as
- 45:37my number one I kind of by the way, Okay, yeah, that's
- 45:42just crazy. I assume it was just going to be I mean, you
- 45:45got the line the girl standing in front of a boy scene, but really,
- 45:51just that whole the climax, you know, the realizing it needs to
- 45:53be with her scene and everyone helping to get him to the press conference is
- 45:58just so much fun. Sure Curtis rates those scenes so well that just you
- 46:01know, wall towards like the eventual. Yeah, you did it in four
- 46:07weddings, in a funeral, you did it in love actually, love actually,
- 46:10the duel because it's too simultaneous happening love actually, and it's still with
- 46:15the music playing over. Oh god. It's still maybe one of my favorite
- 46:20kids ever. Love it. But this one's great too, and this kind
- 46:24of this this last of the groundwork. Yeah, I wanted to mention on
- 46:28the Brownie scene too. Not only is it great and they I'll get to
- 46:30expose it, but then the way they rib each others is so much fun
- 46:32too, Like no, no, you're full of it. Yeah, you
- 46:37don't get it. Yeah, and then just the the collective scream when they
- 46:42closed the door. It's just it felt so real. It felt like what
- 46:46would really happen, just like what just happened. Yeah, totally. I
- 46:52also love that he didn't prep them even for a second. It just brought
- 46:58in one of the those famous people on the planet and just like here,
- 47:02let's see how you guys react to that. I love what great character exposition
- 47:07though, that you get to like, like that's if you want to like
- 47:09know a lot about a character, say like, oh, you're gonna meet
- 47:12a movie Sarah for the first time. How do you react? And they
- 47:14all react so differently and it tells you so much about who they are and
- 47:17what type of people they are. Yeah, I love it so good.
- 47:22Yeah I picked that one as well. And the only other thing I was
- 47:27going to say is I love that they're I love the Brownie parts specifically,
- 47:32and just the way they treat her being on a date with him, you
- 47:37know, as like they're still giving him, still giving him a hard time,
- 47:43and they're like, you know, giving everyone a hard time, but
- 47:45it's almost in a way of like, yeah, he's not successful. Necessarily
- 47:50and he's not, you know, like this wild, crazy charismatic guy,
- 47:53but we love him for so many more reasons than that, and that's the
- 47:58part you should be interested in. I don't know. That was like the
- 48:00subtext I was getting, And I was like, that's really awesome and what
- 48:04a beautiful idea, right, and also something we're not always good at doing,
- 48:09especially in dating with ourselves, like we think we need to impress people
- 48:14rather than just let them see who we are, you know, and interact
- 48:17with them. But I loved that whole dinner scene. It was just that
- 48:21was almost that could have been like a one act play in and of itself,
- 48:24that whole thing and just hung out there even longer. I just loved
- 48:28it. That was great nice. I had a runner up though, as
- 48:32well. I love the interview process for when he's there with Horse and Hound.
- 48:37That is great. That's a great again, right, Like she doesn't
- 48:42tell him what's happening. He just goes with it, says he's a part
- 48:45of the press, you know, like all these things, and it's just
- 48:49so silly and awesome and they're so like they're chemistry so charged between them,
- 48:54and she like loves that he's having to squirm a little bit that the spotlight's
- 48:59on him, you know, a little bit, and she has some power
- 49:01in that moment. I think it's super fun. I love it. Yeah.
- 49:06Another scene, just to mention, is after the like tabloid photos have
- 49:12come out and she's like kind of looking for a safe place and she goes
- 49:15out there. You know, it's just all all romantic stuff, but it's
- 49:21just it. You get to see them just kind of digging on each other
- 49:25and it's fun. It's a it's a charming part of the film. Yeah,
- 49:30it kind of encapsulates that like new love kind of like let's just hide
- 49:35away before we have to involve ourselves with the rest of the world or what
- 49:38you know, Like it's just ussier right now or whatever. Yeah, I
- 49:42love that too. That's a good call. Yeah, it's fun. I
- 49:46had a few others mentioned the cute great but the one with the book and
- 49:54you know, she's in the story and he has to go and basically talk
- 49:59to the guy who has book down his trousers and they ultimate him Like if
- 50:02I call the cops and they come and it turns out you don't have a
- 50:05book down your trousers, I'm terribly sorry I did that whole bit was cute,
- 50:09and then the first line that I thought, like, oh man,
- 50:14this is really great is a through the whole meet cute. She leaves,
- 50:17then she has to come back, and she leaves again, and he goes
- 50:22sorry about the surreal but nice comment, and she's like, don't worry.
- 50:24I thought the apricut with honey thing was the real low point. Ye,
- 50:30such a good stick. It's so true, like it was, that was
- 50:32the low point. Yeah, I was going to do that in the next
- 50:35section, but yep, yeah, I agree, that's a good one.
- 50:37Sorry, that's part of a scene. I also did actually call out the
- 50:43opening with Elvis Costello's she On because it's a great opening scene of the movie.
- 50:50You like to establish who she is, and it's beautiful musiclerant to take
- 50:55a pill because it's gonna get cheesy up in here, Like, it's great,
- 51:00it's great, it's great. It's a beautiful song. That's a great.
- 51:06When I looked it up, I did not realize that it was for
- 51:09this movie. So the YouTube, if you look it up, the music
- 51:14video is him singing like with you know, scenes from this movie in the
- 51:19book. Yeah, Okay. Actually I watched this on my DVD which was
- 51:22actually had a grade saw. My wife had a reclaim from the garage sale
- 51:25she was doing last week and to bring home so I could watch it.
- 51:29It's not free anywhere, And I watched the director's commentary, and I had
- 51:32Richard Curtis and the director whose name I forget, and then one other involved
- 51:37party. But they were talking about like when he filmed it. They were
- 51:42all there and in front of a live orchestra, which usually they dubbed the
- 51:45lyrics over. He did it with the orchestra, and then at the end
- 51:49the orchestra stad stood and clapped and it was a grand thing. Originally sung
- 51:53by an Irish guy, I guess, but they didn't want the main song
- 51:57of the movie to be sung by an Irish guy and have the movie being
- 52:00about a British guy falling in love with an American goal. Sure, I
- 52:04think they're probably thinking about that too much. Honestly, Like Elvis Costello not
- 52:13the prettiest voice ever. It's a beautiful song that it works, It totally
- 52:19works. But yeah, I'm with it, Like you just listen to You're
- 52:24like, man, this should be somebody with like a really beautiful voice should
- 52:29be singing it. And they're like, well, no Elvis is killing it.
- 52:31Yeah, it's an interesting take on it. But I love that.
- 52:37Yeah. I think I think we should go. I think we should go
- 52:40to the next part, and we should show me the money, Show me
- 52:45the money, show it to me, show let's do some of these some
- 52:54quotes, all right, let me set the scene. So she just does,
- 53:00well, let's someone have that cued up. I didn't act you write
- 53:04that down, and I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy asking
- 53:07him to love her, the most popular scene from the movie. She drops
- 53:12that, and then she leaves. And then the next scene and they're at
- 53:15a restaurant. He's kind of going through and all the friends are like,
- 53:19noe, yep, you made the right choice. Never met her, never
- 53:22want to, never trust a vegetarian. And then Spike walks in and he
- 53:25goes, what I miss and they say, William just turned down Anna Scott
- 53:30and Spike says, you daft, prick. That delivery is just like and
- 53:36then that jump starts the finale, you know, the last scene of the
- 53:39movie. So he looks so mad at him, you know, like that's
- 53:47why he was so important he had to be there because he's not socially aware
- 53:52to try to be soft with Will in that situation. He's just like,
- 53:55what are you doing, you idiot? Like I'm going to kill her?
- 54:00And oh, yeah, I know. Then Birdie has the great line.
- 54:05But she said she wanted to go out with you? Yes, sort of,
- 54:07well that's nice. What's nice? Well, you know, anyone's saying
- 54:09they want to go out to you is pretty great, isn't it. It's
- 54:12pretty great? Yeah, I wrote, brother, Yeah, well it was
- 54:16like it was sort of sweet. Actually, I mean, I know she's
- 54:19an actress and all that, and she can deliver a line, but she
- 54:22said that she might be famous as can be, but also that she was
- 54:24just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.
- 54:28And it's just a pause, cutting to all their faces, like holy you
- 54:31idiot, and he goes, oh, so a dog, I made their
- 54:35decision, haven't it? That is the best so good I ever heard.
- 54:43I don't think I realized till I actually read the lione that that's what he
- 54:45said, because you don't expect someone to say, sat a dog. That's
- 54:50good. It's it's spiked for me and then what follows? What do you
- 54:55guys got? Definitely had those I love. In the Horse and Hound interview
- 55:05process, we were talking about, Uh, he's interviewing the twelve year old
- 55:07actress. Is this your first film? Well, actually it's my twenty second.
- 55:12Any favorites among the twenty second? Working with Leonardo da Vinci DiCaprio,
- 55:19of course, And is is he your favorite Italian director? Just nailed it,
- 55:24just nailed that, nailed it reading these stupid travel books. I loved
- 55:29that. Yeah. I loved the scene where they are going into the garden
- 55:36and he says, whoopsie daisies. Yeah, She's like, yes, you
- 55:39said whoopsie daisies. I don't think so. No one says whoopsie Daisy's do
- 55:44they? Unless they're there? Is no one less. No one has said
- 55:46whoopsie daisies for fifty years, and even then it was only little girls with
- 55:51blonde ringlets. She has a great laugh in that scene too, right where
- 55:55he says, like almost a cackle. It's good, cheesy but fun.
- 56:05Just the dominic. If you'd like to ask your question again, yes,
- 56:07Anna, how long are you intending to stay here in Britain? Indefinitely?
- 56:12And then smiling for about twenty minutes. Yes, it's so cheaty, but
- 56:15the bit with having him asked the question again, like I thought, was
- 56:19brilliant and beautiful when I first goat it, instill it plays totally and Bugs
- 56:24loves it because it's cheesy and apparently he likes things that are love cheese.
- 56:29Loves the cheese. And one that was funny is when they're uh, when
- 56:32they're in the car chase and everybody's telling him how to drive, just like
- 56:37James Bond never has to put up with this sort of I loved that.
- 56:42Why don't you say some Bugs? I love when he's just like, thank
- 56:46you, you are Horse and Hound's favorite actress, Blue and Black beauty tied
- 56:52time. That's super fun, Uh, Max asks him at the dinner I
- 56:59think it's at the dinner par already when they're off by themselves. You haven't
- 57:01slept with her, have you? That is a cheap question to answer,
- 57:05and the answer is, of course, no comment. No comment means yes,
- 57:08no, it doesn't. Do you ever masturbate? Definitely? No comment
- 57:12you see it means yes. I just thought that was a little fun.
- 57:16I liked it. M this is more of a serious one. But to
- 57:22prove I love cheese, you are lovelier this morning than you have ever been.
- 57:25And I thought that was just a lovely line. I really liked that
- 57:30one a lot. Umm, well, you never get anyone on Wings of
- 57:37the Dove saying okay, well, you never get anyone in Wings of the
- 57:42Doves saying inform the Pentagon, we need Blackstar cover well, and and for
- 57:46me, the book is the poorer for it. M oh, I was
- 57:53gonna say that the annoying customer is a couple of nice bits. So the
- 57:57guy who watks in the bookstore and he comes in and after he's told that
- 58:00it's a travel book story, goes, how about the new John Grisham thriller,
- 58:05which I thought was delivered fun? And then he comes in right during
- 58:08the big speech, and before he can even come in the building, Will
- 58:13it's just like, don't even think about it, go away immediately. He
- 58:15just kind of looks like right. I like that. A really harsh line
- 58:22is when they capture the pictures outside the apartment and Will goes out first,
- 58:28and then she goes out after, and right before she leaves, she's like
- 58:35newspapers last forever. I'll regret this forever. Yeah, and then he drops
- 58:40I'll feel the opposite if that's okay with you, and it's just like,
- 58:43oh my god, will Yeah, You're you're stuck. You're in a bad
- 58:47spot, dude. But he delivers that really well, which is why he's
- 58:51the dude. In part I think, did you have more? Ron?
- 58:57For sure? Just go into the kitchen to get some food, and I'm
- 59:00gonna tell you a story that'll make your ball shrink to the size of reasons.
- 59:05And then she says probably not best to tell or probably best not to
- 59:08tell anyone about this. He says, right, no one. I mean
- 59:12I'll tell myself sometimes, but don't worry, I won't believe it. I
- 59:15loved that line. That was a great love that I knew a girl at
- 59:21school called Pandora. Never got to see it or bucks, though. I
- 59:25love that line perfect. Oh and one that actually it came up in a
- 59:36different pod that we had Benny Ella John for, but he brought up the
- 59:40line that Alec Baldwin says to him, can you audios those dishes and take
- 59:45out the trash? Just like how just condescending and just so perfect for that
- 59:52Audios those dishes? Yeah, it's pretty great, so great, Honey has
- 59:58the big one and during the inner pert you see when she first meets Anna
- 1:00:00Scott, she goes, Oh God, this is one of those key moments
- 1:00:04in life when it's possible you can be really genuinely cool and I'm failing one
- 1:00:08percent, absolutely and totally and utterly adore you, and I think you're the
- 1:00:12most beautiful woman of the world. And more importantly, I genuinely believe and
- 1:00:15I believe for some time that we can be best friends. What do you
- 1:00:17think? Yeah, and just the way she blurts it out out, which
- 1:00:21is one hundred percent how I would be in a situation like that if I
- 1:00:24had the courage to speak it all. So she kills it and then sets
- 1:00:29up a great reaction from Julia Roberts. Yeah. I also love just before
- 1:00:34that, like everyone's been pretty cool meeting her. That's coming to the party,
- 1:00:37you know, and then she walks in and she's just like, oh
- 1:00:39holy, so great. That release of tension, and then followed by the
- 1:00:45line you said is just so perfect. I love that. It was funny
- 1:00:49when that Max guy first star and he introduced her as Anna, and then
- 1:00:54you see him realize and then say Scott, so great, you know that
- 1:01:00was fun. How about Martin talking about seeing Ringo Star once but it could
- 1:01:07have been too and Williams like, mm hmmm, actually Ringo Star doesn't It
- 1:01:12doesn't look at all like Topol And Martin's like, yes, but he was
- 1:01:15quite a long way away from me, so I could have been neither of
- 1:01:20them. Yes, I suppose. So is that really a classic anecdote?
- 1:01:23Is it? No? Not a not a classic? No? No?
- 1:01:28So great? Yeah, that made that. I've always been a bit of
- 1:01:31an ass comment really, yes, home, Yeah, I love that.
- 1:01:37Another horse and hound one that I liked a lot. Was any any horses
- 1:01:40in that one? Or hounds for that matter? Our readers are equally intrigued
- 1:01:45by both species. It takes place on a submarine. Kay, that's so
- 1:01:53good. You might have said all the ones I had, though there's some
- 1:01:58other there's a lot of like younger ones agreed, and so pretty much the
- 1:02:04entire Brownie scene trying to get like every single thing said in that is wonderful.
- 1:02:09So if you're interested in hearing that, just watch the movie. It's
- 1:02:12great. Even probably google YouTube Brownie scene you probably could. It's great.
- 1:02:20Hit a short. Yeah, I think I think those are the big ones.
- 1:02:24Love it. Let's move on to big moments the crying game. What
- 1:02:30strong men? Also cry strong men? Also? I picked five, but
- 1:02:38I think one is not going to be there, so I'm gonna say four.
- 1:02:45The first one was the opening credits with Elvis Costelli singing she happen anyway
- 1:02:54yeap, So I took that one out. I'm not counting that one.
- 1:02:58I love it. I love it. So the first one I'm gonna say
- 1:03:00is, uh, when Bella says the truth is we can't have a baby.
- 1:03:06Oh yeah, that's a that's a record scratch moment there something I don't
- 1:03:10know. Yeah, absolutely, the classic just a girl standing in front of
- 1:03:15a boy. I mean come on yeah, heh yeah. When they're doing
- 1:03:20the car chase, everybody gets in the car and it's like, where's Bella.
- 1:03:25It's like she's gonna wait and he says, oh sad that he picks
- 1:03:30up his wife and puts the wheelchair in the trunk. I really liked that
- 1:03:34part a lot, due I thought that was really beautiful, just like,
- 1:03:37no, there's no reason for this, tell a love that. I love
- 1:03:43that they put that in the movie. It was me too. Big fan
- 1:03:45out and then the how long will you be staying indefinitely cry to the end?
- 1:03:52For sure? That got me for sure. Yep. Then they looked
- 1:03:58at them smiling for ten to twenty for so long, too long. That
- 1:04:03was all I had. Those are the four that I had, Nice Timmy,
- 1:04:08or is there any that you think he missed? No, that was
- 1:04:11two more than I had. I did put the uh the Bella Bella's brownie
- 1:04:14story. Uh, you know, the baby thing. It it's Zigg's when
- 1:04:18you expected to you expected to be focused on her being in a wheelchair and
- 1:04:24then she you know, it's it just it's unexpected and it hits like a
- 1:04:28ton of bricks. And then I had the final presser when they asked her,
- 1:04:30he asked the question. Those were the two. But I liked the
- 1:04:33bit about not leaving Bella behind. Yeah, uh not again, just a
- 1:04:41girl standing front of voicing that it doesn't completely land for me. But it
- 1:04:45sure cheesy. That's a good thing to call it cheesy, that that would
- 1:04:49be appropriate that line. And still I love it, And still it's still
- 1:04:56you love much. Maybe we just have different How many more there are?
- 1:05:01I think just two more? When she first gives him the smooch. I
- 1:05:09just like that they're both just kind of lonely and sad. Then they do
- 1:05:12the little smooch. It's fun. I like that. And then when they
- 1:05:15sneak into the garden, Yeah, and reread the thing on the bench for
- 1:05:21June who loved this garden from Joseph who always sat beside her, and yeah,
- 1:05:28well and she says like some people really do spend their whole lives together
- 1:05:30or whatever. And I also love in that crane shot, Like you said,
- 1:05:35he doesn't immediately go sit. He walks away to let her have her
- 1:05:40a moment, and I think that's so beautiful. And then she calls him
- 1:05:44over like and maybe that's why they work, because you know, like he
- 1:05:48gives her space rather than everybody else in her life is like trying to get
- 1:05:53something from her, you know, or something. I don't know, but
- 1:05:56I really liked that scene a lot. It definitely made me booo. Yeah,
- 1:06:00we dropped the ball either in quotes or scenes or both not mentioning anything
- 1:06:03in the garden. Because there's also a nice bit when he's like, I
- 1:06:06don't know what would make that work that after he finally gets over the fence
- 1:06:10and she kisses him and he's like, nice guy. Now, yeah,
- 1:06:13because it's nice quickly and definitely worth it. That's a good one, I
- 1:06:16forgot. I love that one. So yeah, how many? So was
- 1:06:19that? Six six six six news any reason? Not bad for her income?
- 1:06:26Not bad, not bad. Let's go in and do a little movieter
- 1:06:30Rivia here. Yes. During the birthday dinner scene, Anna Scott has asked
- 1:06:34how much she made on her last film, and her applies fifteen million.
- 1:06:38As we know, this was actually the amount Julia Roberts was paid for the
- 1:06:42role in this film. So I thought that was kind of interesting. And
- 1:06:44apparently they like they were trying to find the right number that hit the right
- 1:06:47way, and they ended up with that, I guess. So it's kind
- 1:06:50of cool. The house with the blue door where William lives is a real
- 1:06:56residence. It once belonged to the screenwriter Richard Curtis thought that was kind of
- 1:07:01cute, pretty fun, pretty fun. Oh. The bit where she tells
- 1:07:08off the diners in the restaurant also like a pretty good scene. I liked
- 1:07:13that one. It was nice. He tried to, you know, be
- 1:07:15here a little bit, but that wasn't in the script. It was improvised
- 1:07:18a bit, so that's cool. The shots in the lobby of the Ritz
- 1:07:25were actually filmed at the Ritz, but between two am and four AM so
- 1:07:29as not to affect the real guests. The rooftop scene in which they are
- 1:07:34practicing the lines for the submarine movie, it was shortened and edited to remove
- 1:07:40some swearing from Anna that would have kept it from being a PG thirteen movie.
- 1:07:45And I don't know if you saw this to me, but apparently it's
- 1:07:48the DVD has the extended scene with the swearing. I did not watch the
- 1:07:54extended scenes, so I guess they show. There are some really curious speech
- 1:08:00is on the DVD that brings you back to a time where like like there's
- 1:08:02a right you can navigate through and it's weird and really cheesy and like hastily
- 1:08:09put together. It's like we don't have internet yet. Use this. Yeah,
- 1:08:13desire interesting, that's pretty cool. Uh, this is insane. The
- 1:08:19final the original final cut of the film was three and a half hours long.
- 1:08:25That's insanity. When you hurt ninety minutes out and her rabs point they
- 1:08:30could have cut another fifteen ish And yeah, what this was over two hours,
- 1:08:34which for a nineties income wasn't common, right, Yeah, two hours
- 1:08:39and four minutes. But I sat down to watch them, really two hours
- 1:08:42and four minutes, all right, Like I'm not mad. I love it,
- 1:08:46man. Yeah, but three and a half hours. Think of how
- 1:08:51many scenes of them smiling at each other cut? But yeah, I just
- 1:08:58thought that's nuts. Let's see. Richard Curtis developed the film from thoughts while
- 1:09:03laying awake at night. He described the starting point as as the idea of
- 1:09:08a very normal person going out with an unbelievably famous person and how that would
- 1:09:12impinge on their lives, which you know, that's exactly what it's about.
- 1:09:19Oh, I thought this was kind of fun. He also said, in
- 1:09:23the original conception of the movie, Honey was a worker in a record store
- 1:09:27across from his bookshop and Anna's romantic rival for his affections, and the film
- 1:09:33would have ended with William choosing her over the fantasy that Anna represented. But
- 1:09:40he decided he couldn't just dismiss Anna, and so he made Honey into William's
- 1:09:44sister instead. Interesting. That's a whole different film, Like, that's an
- 1:09:48entirely different thing. Interesting. Yeah, and then my last one is at
- 1:09:57William and Anna's wedding. At the end of the film, their wedding cake
- 1:09:59and corporates a design of a goat playing violin, a reference to the Chagall
- 1:10:03painting that Anna gave him. And I thought that was cute, and I
- 1:10:06did not notice it, but that's true, it's there nice. It was
- 1:10:13all I had. What'd you have for any trivias? Well, I only
- 1:10:15had a couple other things. The park bench used in the film now lives
- 1:10:19in Queen's Gardens in East Perth, Western Australia. After filming. The bench
- 1:10:24had been purchased at auction as a romantic gift for a relationship that failed.
- 1:10:29Afterwards, a local Perth resident anonymously donated the bench to the City of Perth.
- 1:10:33And it now really does live in a beautiful garden that is locked at
- 1:10:38night. That's cute. I like fun and I saw that. Director Roger
- 1:10:44Mitchell and writer Richard Curtis both said Hugh Grant and Julie Roberts were the first
- 1:10:48choices for the roles of William Thacker and Anna Scott. Makes sense. I
- 1:10:54could expand on that quick sure. Julia Roberts' agent told her it was the
- 1:10:58best romantic comedy she had ever read. And Roberts said that after reading a
- 1:11:01script, she decided she's going to have to do this, Which that's how
- 1:11:04I mean. Julia Roberts a has been in a lot of really great groundcoms,
- 1:11:08so just in her round cooms to get that kind of praise for it.
- 1:11:11And then for Hugh Grant, Roger Mitchell said that Hugh does Richard Richard
- 1:11:16Curtis better than anyone else, and Richard writes Hugh better than anyone else,
- 1:11:20and that Grant as one of the only actors who can speak Richard's lands perfectly.
- 1:11:24I just thought the level of praise that was tossed around is pretty impressive.
- 1:11:30For sure. That's interesting. Well, I like that. Did you
- 1:11:33have anything else to Yeah, one thing. Just we talked about how great
- 1:11:38the group of friends with and Roger Mitchell explained that when you were casting a
- 1:11:42Cabala friends or no, he said, uh, it was rather like assembling
- 1:11:45a family. When you're casting a Kabala friends, you have to cast the
- 1:11:48balance equalities of types and of sensibilities. They were the jigsaw that had to
- 1:11:53be put together all in one go. And I think we've got a very
- 1:11:56good variety of people who could realistically still live in the same world. Kind
- 1:12:00of sums up what we were describing earlier. And it's it's cool to see
- 1:12:02that there was intentionality behind that and that it just didn't work out that way.
- 1:12:08Yeah, that's great, good call, so all I got, although
- 1:12:12I did also just read the model of bench, like there's a specific type
- 1:12:16of bench like four foot Bonneville the sales sword after this movie, which I
- 1:12:21just thought it was interesting that, like you can go bench shopping that specifically,
- 1:12:30Sir nice well Judgment Day. Will there be a sequel? No,
- 1:12:38I can't imagine. No. Roundcoms aren't made for sequels, but it's kind
- 1:12:44of a it sucks right like wood sequels worked, like just like spend two
- 1:12:49hours with this group of people again, like I'd sign up, I'd watch
- 1:12:54it and love. Actually, there was pushed for a sequel and they did
- 1:12:57some fun stuff with it, but you need to follow it, like the
- 1:13:00falling in love is the interesting part and once they've fallen in love, it's
- 1:13:04not as fun. On This sounds like Jesse and Celeste Forever, like breakup
- 1:13:09movie, which would also be super interesting and sad, but no, like
- 1:13:15it. I don't want to watch that. I'd watch it, I don't.
- 1:13:18I love this movie. I love this movie so much. Let's just
