• 0:05
Speaker 1: pay his way into the Marionette theater. See Pinocchio hurrying
• 0:12
Speaker 1: off to school with his new A B. Sea Book
• 0:15
Speaker 1: under his arm. As he walked along, his brain was
• 0:19
Speaker 1: busy planning hundreds of wonderful things, building hundreds of castles
• 0:24
Speaker 1: in the air. Talking to himself, he said, in school
• 0:28
Speaker 1: to day, I'll learn to read tomorrow, to write the
• 0:31
Speaker 1: day after tomorrow, while do arithmetic and clever as I am.
• 0:34
Speaker 1: I can earn a lot of money. With the very
• 0:37
Speaker 1: first pennies I make. I'll buy father a new cloth
• 0:40
Speaker 1: coat cloth Did I say no? It shall be of
• 0:43
Speaker 1: gold and silver with diamond buttons. That poor man deserves
• 0:47
Speaker 1: it for after all, isn't he in his shirt sleeves?
• 0:50
Speaker 1: Because he was good enough to buy a book for
• 0:52
Speaker 1: me on this cold day too. Fathers are indeed good
• 0:57
Speaker 1: to their children. As he talked to himself, he thought
• 1:02
Speaker 1: he heard sounds of pipes and drums coming from a distance.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: Pee pee pee pee pee pee Zum zum sum sum.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: He stopped to listen. Those sounds came from a little
• 1:15
Speaker 1: street that led to a small village along the shore.
• 1:19
Speaker 1: What can that noise be what a nuisance that I
• 1:22
Speaker 1: have to go to school otherwise? Then he stopped, very
• 1:28
Speaker 1: much puzzled. He felt he had to make up his
• 1:32
Speaker 1: mind for either one thing or another. Should he go
• 1:36
Speaker 1: to school or should he follow the pipes. To day,
• 1:41
Speaker 1: I'll follow the pipes, and tomorrow I'll go to school.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: There's always plenty of time to go to school, decided
• 1:46
Speaker 1: the little rascal at last, shrugging his shoulders. No. Sooner
• 1:50
Speaker 1: said than done. He started down the street, going like
• 1:53
Speaker 1: the wind. On he ran and louder grew the sounds
• 1:56
Speaker 1: of pipe and drum pee pee pee pee pee pee
• 1:59
Speaker 1: pee bp sum zum zum zum. Suddenly he found himself
• 2:04
Speaker 1: in a large square full of people, standing in front
• 2:07
Speaker 1: of a little wooden building painted in brilliant colors. What
• 2:13
Speaker 1: is that house, Pinocchio asked the little boy near him.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: Read the side, and you'll know I'd like to read,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: but somehow I can't. To day, Oh really, and I'll
• 2:23
Speaker 1: read it to you know? Then that written in letters
• 2:26
Speaker 1: of fire, I see the words Great Marionette Theater. When
• 2:32
Speaker 1: did the show start? It's starting now? And how much
• 2:35
Speaker 1: does one pay to get? In? Four pennies Pinocchio, who
• 2:40
Speaker 1: was wild with curiosity to know what was going on inside,
• 2:43
Speaker 1: lost all his pride and said to the boy shamelessly,
• 2:47
Speaker 1: will you give me four pennies until tomorrow? I'd give
• 2:51
Speaker 1: them to you gladly, answered the other, poking fun at him.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: But just now I can't give them to you for
• 2:57
Speaker 1: the price of four pennies. I'll sell you my coat
• 3:00
Speaker 1: if it rains. What shall I do with a coat
• 3:02
Speaker 1: of flowered paper? I could not take it off again.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: Do you want to buy my shoes? They are only
• 3:09
Speaker 1: good enough to light a fire with? What about my hat?
• 3:12
Speaker 1: Fine bargain? Indeed a cap of dough? The mice might
• 3:15
Speaker 1: come and eat it from my head. Pinocchio was almost
• 3:19
Speaker 1: in tears. He was just about to make one last offer,
• 3:23
Speaker 1: but he lacked the courage to do so. He hesitated,
• 3:29
Speaker 1: he wondered, he could not make up his mind. At last,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: he said, will you give me four pennies for the book?
• 3:38
Speaker 1: I am a boy, and I buy nothing from boys,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: said the little fellow, with far more common sense than
• 3:44
Speaker 1: the marionette. I'll give you four pennies for your A. B. C. Book,
• 3:48
Speaker 1: said a ragpicker who stood by. Then and there the
• 3:53
Speaker 1: book changed hands. And to think that poor old Geppetto
• 3:58
Speaker 1: sat at home in his shirt sleeve eb shivering with cold,
• 4:02
Speaker 1: having sold his coat to buy that little book for
• 4:05
Speaker 1: his son. So ends Chapter nine,
