- 0:47The second week of this NFL season was great and historic indeed.
- 0:51We have Ed Cleese joining us once again to tell us about some great history, some records that were set, and some interesting factoids.
- 0:57Ed joins us in just a moment.
- 1:01Hello, my football friends.
- 1:02This is Darren Hayes of pigskindispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal to positive football history.
- 1:07And welcome to the PostPartum of Week 2 in the NFL season of 2026.
- 1:13Ed Cleese joins me to go over the history of this past week.
- 1:17Ed, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 1:18Hey, Darren, how's going on?
- 1:20Hey.
- 1:20It is a great day to be an NFL fan because we had some great things happen over this weekend.
- 1:26Maybe not to your team and my team, but some really some overall great things in the NFL.
- 1:31So what are your thoughts on this past week?
- 1:34Sure.
- 1:34Well, we'll start with the Thursday night game.
- 1:37The Bills took care of the Lions.
- 1:39That was the sixth straight win for the for the Bills over the Lions.
- 1:43The Lions have not beaten Buffalo in 20 years.
- 1:46Last time they beat him was in 2006.
- 1:49And the last time they won in Buffalo was 1991 is the last time that the Lions actually went into Buffalo.
- 1:57And one that was a game that went to overtime late in December.
- 2:00And that was kind of an interesting year because the Bills would go on to lose the super bowl to the Redskins and the Lions would lose the NFC Championship game to the Redskins.
- 2:09So both of those teams are really good in 91, but it's been, whatever that is, 35 years now since Detroit won in Buffalo.
- 2:16And they're both really good teams this year.
- 2:18But it looked like one team was much better than the other.
- 2:21They really put into that that inaugural opening of that new stadium up in Buffalo.
- 2:28The Bills really did some good things for their fans.
- 2:31Yes.
- 2:31And speaking of much better than one team being much better than the other, the Panthers absolutely destroyed the Falcons on Sunday.
- 2:39That is, I think, the 63rd time those teams have played because of course, they're in the same division.
- 2:45But this is actually the Panthers longest winning streak against the Falcons.
- 2:49They have won four games in a row against the Falcons and that is the longest streak they've ever had against Atlanta.
- 2:55Yeah, and some amazing things.
- 2:57I mean, what a turnaround for that defense for Carolina.
- 3:00They gave up 59 in week one to the Bears, only give up three points to the Falcons.
- 3:05Frustrated Coach Stefanski and his offense he brought in Bijon was a little bit frustrated, I think.
- 3:12And over 20 seasons, just three players have recorded A sack and multiple interceptions and a touchdown in a single contest.
- 3:20Charles Woodson, 2009, Zach Brown, 2012 and Devin Lloyd just did it in that Carolina Atlanta game this week.
- 3:29So some history was made.
- 3:30And it was funny that you use that as the Bears game from last week as a segue to what I'm about to talk about, because The Bears scored 56 points.
- 3:39I'm sorry, they scored 59 points in Week 1.
- 3:42The Bears scored three points in Week 2.
- 3:45So if you're really good at math like me, then you know that that is a 56 point disparity.
- 3:52Do you think that that is the greatest disparity we've ever seen from week one and week two?
- 3:57Or do you think there's anybody out there that can beat it?
- 3:5956 point disparity.
- 4:03I'm sure there's probably somebody that's beat it in history.
- 4:07I probably wouldn't have asked if, if, if, if that wasn't the case.
- 4:11So you're right.
- 4:12The 1973 Atlanta Falcons had a 62 point disparity from week one to week two.
- 4:22In 1973, they beat the Saints 62, 7 in week one.
- 4:27Then they lost to the Rams 31 to nothing the next week.
- 4:33So they scored 62, then they scored 0.
- 4:36Now get this, Darren.
- 4:38Then the Falcons would go on to score six points the next week, nine points the week after that.
- 4:45So they scored 62 points and then they went three weeks without scoring a touchdown or getting to 10 points.
- 4:52And then the next two weeks they scored 46 and 41.
- 4:58Gee, that's a little bit of inconsistency on offense, I'd say.
- 5:02So if anybody ever wants to deep dive into the bipolar 1973 Atlanta Falcons, you might have some really fun stuff to dig up like I did.
- 5:11Yeah, okay.
- 5:13I guess that's definitely why we have you here to tell some of that stuff like that.
- 5:17And if we're talking about digging up, maybe we're gonna have to dig, dig up some dirt that you're not going to like here, Darren, because the Steelers are now, I went back to the start of the Brady era.
- 5:28So essentially 2001, the Steelers are now 2 and 7.
- 5:32This includes postseason in games played at New England and the average score of that game is 37 to 22.
- 5:42They have gotten throttled by the Patriots in New England over these years.
- 5:47And that speaks to something that you might say.
- 5:49Well, New England's been a Super bowl team, you know.
- 5:51Yes.
- 5:51But over this period, the Steelers have also been a very good team.
- 5:54And Organization that was often right with the Patriots in the afc, but they just have not been able to figure them out in Foxborough.
- 6:03And it's, it's odd that they seems like they play in Foxborough every single year.
- 6:07I mean, they're not in the same division, but the Steelers play at New England probably four times to one time playing in Pittsburgh.
- 6:15Yeah, right.
- 6:16Yes.
- 6:17So, yeah.
- 6:17And then staying in this in the division, we saw that deshaun Watson played quite well on Sunday in Tampa Bay.
- 6:26He threw for over 200 yards and the Browns won.
- 6:30Did you know it has been just under three years since DeSean Watson threw for 200 yards in a game and the Browns won three years for, for that, for that kind of money.
- 6:41That was on November 12th of 2023.
- 6:44He had 200 yards, a little over 200 yards passing, and the Browns won that game.
- 6:49I think it was against the Ravens.
- 6:50So Browns fans, hopefully you don't have to wait three more years for it to happen again.
- 6:56Well, the Browns might be happy about something else because they have an emerging star on offense besides DeSean Watson's sudden appearance.
- 7:04Rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston.
- 7:07He put himself in the record books, joined some kind of elite company.
- 7:11Sammy White, 1976, Mack Hike, and I believe I'm saying his name right, in 1968.
- 7:18Those are the only other players besides Boston that had 45 yards or more in their first two NFL games.
- 7:25So.
- 7:26Wow, that's, that's, that's pretty crazy.
- 7:28I'm sorry.
- 7:2845 yard long touchdown or more.
- 7:31I'm sorry.
- 7:32Maybe the Browns have something cooking.
- 7:35I buried your team, so it would only be apropos for me to do the same to mine.
- 7:40Darren, The Washington franchises woes in Dallas continue.
- 7:46I went back to 1991, which is of course the last time the Washington Redskins commanders won the Super Bowl.
- 7:53And I, I eliminated games that were played in Dallas where it didn't matter.
- 7:58Meaning if it was a late season game and one or the other team was eliminated already.
- 8:03I skipped those because Washington has won a couple of those.
- 8:06But since 1991, in games that matter in Dallas, Washington is 6 and 22.
- 8:126 and 22 is, is our record in games that don't matter or that do matter.
- 8:17I'm sorry.
- 8:18In Dallas.
- 8:19And this is now the third year in the row that JD5 has failed to complete a start in Dallas in 2024.
- 8:25He got pulled in the second half because we didn't need to win the game.
- 8:28We were already in the playoffs last year.
- 8:30He gets hurt in Dallas.
- 8:31And of course, unfortunately this year he gets hurt again.
- 8:35So it has been a nightmare in many, many different forms for Washington in Dallas over the years and I've been there for a lot of them in football, unfortunately.
- 8:43Well, they're not the only ones because as far as Dak Prescott starting games, that's his 20th straight victory in AT T against NFC east opponents.
- 8:54That ties a record with Tom Brady who did it for the Patriots.
- 8:58So he's in.
- 9:00You know, they are up against some tough odds there with Dak Prescott playing.
- 9:04Let's, let's stop talking about that right now, Darren.
- 9:06Let's stop.
- 9:07That's, that's enough Dallas praise.
- 9:09So speaking of records, Patrick Mahomes is now 8 and oh.
- 9:13In regular season overtime games, which is the NFL record.
- 9:18Do you know which quarterback he just passed?
- 9:23No, I don't know.
- 9:24Okay.
- 9:24It's a surprising name.
- 9:26Jake Plummer was previously the record holder being undefeated in overtime games.
- 9:32I would have never guessed that.
- 9:33So.
- 9:34But Patrick Mahomes has bumped another off the list.
- 9:39Yeah.
- 9:40The other thing he bumped off as he continued Indies streak.
- 9:44That's nine straight losses for the Colts that stretches back into last season after they really started off pretty hot last year.
- 9:51Yikes.
- 9:52Yeah, that is scary.
- 9:53Speaking of scary and for Giants fans, you're going to definitely want to forget this Monday night game for sure considering what has now come out about Jackson Dart.
- 10:02But the Giants have also lost 12 of their last 13 Monday night games.
- 10:07That's.
- 10:08That's not good.
- 10:09And they, they really from for the last like 15 or 20 years have a poor record on Monday Night Football.
- 10:14But this streak they're on right now is, is really bad.
- 10:18So 12 out of 13 losses for the Giants on Monday night.
- 10:21Oh yeah.
- 10:22That is a bad streak and a bad break for the young quarterback.
- 10:26Yes sir.
- 10:27So that's what I have in the news and notes and I am ready to talk Scoragami if you are.
- 10:34Well let me, let me throw a couple other historic items that happened here before we get to score gummy.
- 10:39I get so excited about score gummy that I just can't, I can't hold.
- 10:42Contain myself.
- 10:43Darren, we have to save score gummy for the, for the.
- 10:46That's a great.
- 10:48I'll try to sit still.
- 10:49Okay.
- 10:50Well, the Bengals against the Texans.
- 10:53The Bengals did not allow a Texans touchdown in this past game this past weekend.
- 10:57You know, played some great defense.
- 10:59The last time that the Bengals did not allow a touchdown was all the way back in Week 3 of 2022 against the New York jets.
- 11:06So that's maybe they got something cooking there.
- 11:09The packers in the the jets game that happened.
- 11:13Speaking of The jets up 17 to 7 was the pack until that fourth quarter meltdown.
- 11:20That defeat marks the franchise's worst first blown double digit fourth quarter lead since 2020 against the Patriots.
- 11:27So the packers, hopefully they're not on a bad trend for their fans.
- 11:31Jacksonville and Denver quarterback Bo Nix recorded his fifth time in his young career that he brought his team back from a double digit deficit.
- 11:40That ties him with only Lamar Jackson in that same time period of Bo Nick's career.
- 11:47And the Seahawks established a new franchise high record with their 12th consecutive win including the postseason.
- 11:53Of course they won the super bowl, won a playoff game and the streak continues going into this year.
- 12:00The other one I have is Kirk Cousins match the franchise history for the Raiders by throwing at least three touchdown passes in each of his first two games this season, making him the only quarterback since Ken stabler back
- 12:13in 1976 to do that same feat.
- 12:16So that's some of our historic moments we've had from week two.
- 12:20Some good history there.
- 12:21Good history, yeah.
- 12:23Okay.
- 12:23I think it's time for some score gummy.
- 12:25Okay, well first, Darren, can I, can I tell you a little story that might ruin Scoragami for you forever?
- 12:31Okay.
- 12:33Probably no matter what I say, you're gonna tell me.
- 12:35Yes.
- 12:36That this is true and you're maybe your young listeners at home, I don't know, you'll have to tell me, maybe you need to cover their ears on this story.
- 12:43So a few years ago as you, as I told you, I'm obsessed with the score gummy as anybody that is listening and doesn't know what that is.
- 12:50That is the history of unique score scores in the NFL.
- 12:53So if you have a final score, it's the first time it's ever happened.
- 12:57That's a score gummy.
- 12:58And you can look up how many times each score has happened in history.
- 13:01And a few years ago I was explaining this to my brother in law and we were having a discussion about it and we went over it and then the next time I saw him was probably a couple weeks
- 13:11later and we were sitting in the same spot we were in at my in laws house when we were talking about score gummy the first time and he said, oh hey Ed, Eddie, did you see there was a,
- 13:21there was a scoregasm down in Atlanta.
- 13:24And I said, I said excuse me, what?
- 13:27He said yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:28Remember there was a scoregasm in Atlanta.
- 13:31And I was like what in the world are you talking about?
- 13:33And do I need to get on a plane to Atlanta like right now?
- 13:36What are you.
- 13:36What are you referencing here?
- 13:38And he says, you know what you were talking about last week with the final scores.
- 13:43And I said, do you mean score a gami?
- 13:46And he goes, oh, I guess.
- 13:47Is that what you call this?
- 13:49Orgasm?
- 13:51So Darren, the funniest part to the story is he wasn't trying to coin a new phrase.
- 13:56He wasn't trying to be funny.
- 13:58That's just what came out of his mouth.
- 14:00He was going around telling everybody that there were scoregasms.
- 14:05And so unfortunately what this happened is I can never talk about this without having that in my head.
- 14:14I.
- 14:14And I am paranoid wherever I go now that I'm going to spill it out.
- 14:18So I guess I've done it now.
- 14:21Maybe it's better to just get it out in the open so if it ever spills out later in the year, we know.
- 14:25I am not trying to change the name of score gummy, but if I ever get tongue tied, you'll know why.
- 14:31Well, maybe if it's your team wins in a score gummy, you could have a scoregasm.
- 14:36Maybe that's what it could be.
- 14:40Now Darren, you just gave me something to root for the rest of the year with the commander.
- 14:46We don't want to hear if you have a scoregasm.
- 14:48That's.
- 14:48That's all we want to say.
- 14:49Okay?
- 14:50Keep that to yourself.
- 14:51That's your private life.
- 14:52I will be rooting for it.
- 14:54But getting back to Scoragami, we did not have a score of Gummy this week.
- 14:58There were, there was actually.
- 14:59There was actually nothing that was even in the top 10.
- 15:02So there was no scores that were a 10 or 10 or fewer times.
- 15:07Do you know which score was the most rare?
- 15:10I'm gonna have to say the Thursday night game because that's kind of a rare score, I would think, 41 to 31 in that Buffalo and Detroit game.
- 15:17Darren, you must be a guy that's watched some football in your life because you are exactly right that 41 to 31 has only happened 13 times.
- 15:25Ironically, the first time it happened was also in Buffalo in 1961 at War Memorial Stadium when the Bills beat the New York Titans.
- 15:35The Titans became the jets.
- 15:36Is that correct?
- 15:37That's correct.
- 15:38Okay, yes.
- 15:38So then like Don Maynard scored some touchdowns, had a big game for the Titans and.
- 15:43But the Bills won that game at War Memorial Stadium.
- 15:46And then the other thing that kind of stuck out for this week, Darren, is we did have the most common score in the history of the NFL happen again?
- 15:52The packers beat the Jets 20 to 17.
- 15:55That is the most common score in NFL history.
- 15:57That was the 303rd time that has happened.
- 16:01And for our score, a ME index week two registered a 73.18 on the scale compared to last week, which was a 53.75.
- 16:11So like you said, week one is still in the run.
- 16:14It still remains on top for the rarest group of scores so far this year.
- 16:18We've only had two weeks.
- 16:19We've only been doing this for two weeks in history, so we don't have much to compare it to.
- 16:24But number one out of two.
- 16:26It's one out of two.
- 16:27Yes, sir.
- 16:28So that's it.
- 16:29All right.
- 16:30Well, that is some great history, some great scorgasm scoragami.
- 16:33And some great football history indeed.
- 16:37With a lot of fun.
- 16:38And we expect to have a lot more fun when we talk about this historic thing next week.
