[gentle music] Heard in 105 countries around the world, including Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Morocco,
• 0:29
it's the Weekly Dose of Fat radio hour with your hosts Sven and Gomez. Greetings, ladies and gentlemens. My taste in music is your face. What does that even mean? [laughs] Like- What- I, I don't know... rubber and glue?
• 0:48
[laughs] It's a line from a song that I heard today. Yep. Well, sitting across the desk from you is the one and only JK Living. I've been trying to get people to call me Sunny D- [laughs]...
• 1:00
'cause I got the good stuff kids go for. [laughs] But they keep calling me Five Alive. [laughs] Okay, that was a song lyric that I just love. [laughs] It just worked out really cool there.
• 1:13
It's the all song lyric show here at- [laughs]... Fat Bike Radio. Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly Bikes. Surly makes bikes that make the whole world sing, like Growlcore.
• 1:27
Learn more about bikes and metal at surlybikes.com. This is the post-Las Vegas hangover special edition show. So we have quite a show lined up for you today. Yeah, we'll take call- Maybe... in guests.
• 1:46
Oh, so long to gan- answer the question. What was your favorite fat bike item from coverage of this year's Interbike Extravaganza? Tanza. Da. We'll talk some fat and plus bike stuff that
• 2:04
these guys saw over on the Interbike show floor. Shoe floor. The shoe floor. Big shoe floor. We'll delve on the fat bike and plus bike news from the Fatty Farm Field Report. FFFR.
• 2:19
And we might even have a link or two for you. There's at least one in there that's worth looking at. Yeah, yeah. Do it. Cheers, boys. Cheers. Do it. Top of the hill. Boink. Boink. Ka-pa-chow. Ooh, spillage.
• 2:38
Oh, 100% natural flavors. Beautiful. Mm. Well, let's take a quick break here before we talk to special guest, Fat Man. Na, na, na, na, na. Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na. Hi, this is Eric from Surly.
• 2:55
Uh, every time I'm looking for the preferred nomenclature, I listen in to Gomez and Sven on Fat Bike Radio. Nomenclature. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Welcome back to the radio program.
• 3:12
We're lucky to have Fat Man in the studio today, fresh from his Interbike trip. Tell us, Fat Man, how was your Interbike experience? It happens every year, Sven.
• 3:24
Disappointment in the lack of lightweight bulletproof fat bikes and body armor. I miss my boys from Salsa. They were supposed to be working on a new Fatcycle, but they pulled out early this year.
• 3:38
I hate it when people pull out early. So could you compare and/or contrast your Interbike experience with the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas? Fremont Street is Ronan and mine's home away from home.
• 3:54
The floor of Interbike is serious business and commerce. And you take the zip line, and you just wa-hee over it all. That's where Fat Man learned to fly and became a Kiss fan.
• 4:09
There were some interesting Kiss things on the Fremont Street Experience, Fat Man. I'll give you that one. Kiss rocks. So downtown or strip?
• 4:21
Ronan and I always swing by Oscars for a steak and a wedge salad when we're in Vegas, and that's in downtown, Sven. Not a wedgie salad, just a wedge salad. [laughs] Well, sometimes my Kevlar underpants do form a wedge.
• 4:38
And- But that's crime fighting, Sven And the voice is affected as such, you'll notice. [laughs] All right, Fat Man, ladies and gentlemen.
• 4:47
Let's take a break, and when we come back, we will reveal next week's call-in question, check in with the Fatty Farm Field Report, and check on some links. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 5:03
We got somebody on the line there, Sven? Yeah, we got somebody on the line. Hola, amigos. Oh, this sounds like the one and only, the guy who I can't remember his name. Travis. [laughs] That's it.
• 5:19
See how my brain- Yeah Did you see how my brain worked there? Yeah, I heard it. Did kick into gear after a while. [laughs] Totally. I totally heard it. [laughs] Like, creak. Downshifting. [laughs] Travis, what up?
• 5:33
What's up? Well, we're- Hey, Gomez. Yeah. Yes, sir? I, I went and tried to track down Nicholas. Uh-oh. I saw him at, uh, at the Interbike outdoor demo. Okay, then you probably know that he left the state.
• 5:47
Oh, the chicken runner. I, we're gonna- Yeah... you are gonna pursue him? That, that, that's the word we got is, is we- you're just gonna pursue him to the ends of the earth. Where does he go? Where did he go?
• 6:00
Some foreign country to ride his bike? A likely story. Where is Nicholas? Probably is gonna be a pretty good story. I will find him. We will leg roast him I saw him in, uh, at, in the desert there in Boulder City.
• 6:11
He was looking, uh, he was looking good. He had the, the gal Lael with him, and, uh, who else was there? It was a whole crowd of, uh...
• 6:20
Where wa- it was at the Revelate booth, and they were, they were looking at samples of Patagonia wear. They were all slipping in and out of puffy jackets.
• 6:29
[laughs] It cracked me up when it was, like, 89 degrees in the desert, not the 100 on the first day, that people were donning puffy coats to walk around [laughs] I know... in the 89-degree chilly air. Right. I saw Mr.
• 6:42
JP LeMaire with a puffy coat on. Indeed. He has no blood. He's carbon- Help... he's, he's carbon blooded. What's new up there in Alaska, T-Bone? Well, it's a little slow on the ride scene.
• 6:54
Just had, like, a, I don't know, a 10 or 12-day deluge. So, uh, weather finally broke. Got out last weekend, and everything's kinda really muddy. Uh, got some emails from Kathy Merchan on the Big Fat Ride Expo, and, uh,
• 7:10
kinda some committees starting to form, and action seems- Are you on the decoration committee? [laughs] Of course. I think we should have a lot of antlers. Want to be on the beverage committee.
• 7:24
[laughs] There you go, the beverage committee, 'cause then you'd have to go to every brew pub and check out their wares to see who's worthy to bring the suds. We gotta do that.
• 7:36
[laughs] Well, let us know if you n- we need to, you know, to talk to Kathy for you. We have a way with people, you know. We'll, we'll, Charms, or Sven's a real charmer. Charm's a real Svenner.
• 7:48
Yeah, let's see how that works out. [laughs] So Travis, did you see- Yeah, because I can... Go ahead... did you see pictures of the, uh, the Yeti Von Evil T-shirt? We had- I did... we had a real, a real printed picture.
• 8:02
Can't wait to- It looks a lot better than the- Oh, no, I haven't got yet... the artist rendering. Oh, it looks good. Have you wandered over to Sp- It's the only shirt I'm gonna wear.
• 8:09
[laughs] Have you, have you wandered over to Speedway Cycles to take a look at the Skookum?
• 8:15
I went over there, like, a week before Interbike hoping they'd have a peek of it, and the guys there said it was all locked up and- Yeah, you were a week early, dude... they hadn't even seen it themselves.
• 8:25
It's there now. And, uh- Jordy Blackson took it out... I have not swung in there. I am definitely headed that way this week. Hopefully they'll have one built up and, you know, maybe even get a test ride in.
• 8:36
Yeah, Jordy took it out. There's, uh, there's, like, only a couple of sample bikes available right now, so. Okay. Um, but it, it, it's our size, man.
• 8:46
You'll be able to throw your leg over it, take it out for a spin maybe. Maybe $10,000 deposit or something. I don't know. [laughs] Yeah, I took a little cruise on it. That sounds like a lot of money. It's a lot of fun.
• 8:56
Or maybe only fat back riders gets to, gets to take it out, man. You, none of you specialized riders, fat boy riders. No. [laughs] Maybe. I don't know. We kinda talked about outdoor stuff last week.
• 9:08
Maybe we can talk about indoor stuff a little later. Really? About the Interbike? Yeah, we could talk about that a little later. Oh, man. People standing in the aisles. Indoors? Yeah. That's what, that's what- Oh, yeah.
• 9:20
I, I also would be indoors when they... [laughs] Hi, dearie. That's Sven's pet peeve is when people stand in the middle of the aisle. It's a sidewalk- And yammer... not a side stand.
• 9:31
I, uh, he was, he was found to be quoted. He was quoted to be found there. Yep. Bless her heart. At the- "Get out of my way. I'm busy"... Mandalay Bay Convention Center. "I'm working here." "I'm working here."
• 9:46
[laughs] Is there an... [laughs] We, we had quite the tour of that, that convention center. We, like, went out a side door. Yeah. We walked- We walked all the way around that thing. That's a complex, too. Yeah. It is.
• 10:01
Sven saw a pretty cool, like, mini bike, fat bike. That was pretty badass. Yeah, they're supposed to send us one for testing. It's, like, a, kind of a 20-inch, uh, but adult-sized bike. Kinda like a Brompton.
• 10:13
Not folding, though- Mm-hmm... but with four-inch wide tires on it. It looks like a giant mini bike from our childhood, the kind that you would just put a lot more engine in and vroom.
• 10:25
Yeah, with a gate belt drive and everything. Put a lot more power in that. It's, it's pretty sweet. Yeah. Nice. I'm looking forward to it.
• 10:30
Well, I think that, uh, Fat Camp is this weekend, and I know that they'll probably have that Lebowski there, so we'll be able to zip around on an e-bike. Lebowski. Yeah.
• 10:41
Sven took the world by the battery and photographed all of the e-bikes of Interbike. Yeah, I bet there's more the, more fat bikes, fat e-bikes. There's a lot of them, but there was a lot of them there.
• 10:56
There were a lot of them that will never c- see American shores other than- Probably... these samples, but that's a heck of a lot of interest.
• 11:05
There was [laughs] there's a lot of, lot of commerce going on in the old e-bike thing. Yeah. Or something. We even have one coming for testing. Yeah. That's what you had said.
• 11:15
The Surface 604, which I thought was the best of the bunch from what we saw out there. And they had a big presence at the outdoor demo. We did not take the opportunity to ride them.
• 11:26
We were s- we were still poo-pooing them at that time. Well, I, I- Our tune changed once we got ins- inside. Well, maybe your tune changed. [laughs] I s- My tune just shut up. [laughs] Yeah.
• 11:40
I, I'm, I'm still, uh, I'm still anti other than- I like-... other than the sort of-... this motor. Yeah, exactly. I like the leg motor. Yeah. Leg m- you still got a leg motor, you just now you have super powerful legs.
• 11:54
[laughs] Yeah. It's a pedal assist, not a throttle gasser. I guess I'm just, you know. You see, you'll take it out and tell me you don't come back grinning. [laughs] Fuck off. [laughs] Then you gotta buy one of those.
• 12:08
Ah. So. No Gateway [laughs] To a motorcycle? Gateway to, uh- Or to a Segway. Yeah, to a- Gateway to a Segway. Ay caramba. Oh. You never walk, ever. Oh.
• 12:20
You just ride your Segway to your e-bike, your e-bike to your desk, your desk to your coffin. No, they have the ones that aren't even Segways. [laughs] They're like the little balance beam. Oh, the little scooter things.
• 12:31
[laughs] Those are all over. Those are all over out there. Yeah. Oh, those are horrible. And- They are. [laughs] And stuff. Well, all right.
• 12:38
So much for- [laughs] So much for that call really helping out the contents of the show. Thanks, Travis. [laughs] Save us. Save us from ourselves. Yeah, I know. We just bonked into an iceberg. We got a list back left.
• 12:52
Yeah. So what did you wanna talk- What was the question this week again? The question of the week this week was what was your- Yes... favorite item from our Interbike, Interbike coverage.
• 13:01
It doesn't even have to be our Interbike coverage, just Interbike coverage. What did you see that made your nipples taut? Can I have one thing for each nipple? Sure. [laughs] It's gonna be three, isn't it?
• 13:15
[laughs] It's gonna be three. You're gonna have that third nipple, aren't you? Yeah, just like Blade Runner. Yeah. Thing number one. Thing number one, uh, the Fatback Skookum, for sure. Skookum.
• 13:27
And, uh, thing number two is that RSD titanium Merak. Oh. Ooh. Yeah. That was a really cool bike. Yeah, that was a good-looking bike. Very nice. They had stainless ones there, too.
• 13:38
Yep, which look a lot like titanium, only just a little bit different color. [laughs] RSD Bikes from Toronto, eh? Eh? They make kick-ass bikes and gangsta. What about, what about for your third nipple?
• 13:51
Oh, he's gotta dig deep. Uh, third nipple. You know, I'd have to go with that Fat Boy with the sidecar, for sure. Oh. Yeah, the, the Hoonigan from, uh, from Ken Block.
• 14:01
That thing has, it has- You just, you just advocated for an e-bike, yo... Yeah, I think that thing had a Surface. Yeah, that was an e-bike. Whatever the rear hub was, it looked like the same one that's on the Surface.
• 14:10
Yeah. And- That's okay... those, he's, the, the, the dude said he had, him and two guys, two guys on the sidecar, he was riding the bike, and they were able to hit 25 [laughs] on that thing. No way.
• 14:19
I'd like to see that doing a gymkhana with Ken Block driving it. Yeah, in a big banks turn with the, with the stoker or the sidecar guy with, pulling the brake and leaning way out, and the wind in the hair.
• 14:31
Yeah, um, yeah. Yeah, I guess Specialized has a Skunkworks that does cool stuff like that. Who'd have known? I knew. [laughs] Yeah.
• 14:46
So what was your favorite three things from the grand Interbike showcase of love? Me? Yeah. You, you, you, you talking to me? [laughs] Should I- I'm, I am going with the, the Skookum as one of them, for sure. Yeah.
• 14:59
That bike, w- what little time I stole it and rode it for, was very fun to ride. Thing number two, very curious about the Vee Tire 2XL, if we can get that on some bikes- Nice... and try the extra flotation out.
• 15:12
The third nipple? I don't know. I like innovative stuff like Paul Components', uh- Yeah... set and forget quick release. That's a pretty cool thing.
• 15:20
I've, because I've struggled with several different thru-axle quick releases lately, um, including ones that have broken. Both, uh, two out of three have failed- Hmm...
• 15:32
in either getting them out or putting them in, [laughs] depending on which way they were going. But, um, I had to take the whole rear end of a bike apart to get the rear out because the handle broke off of it. Hmm.
• 15:42
And the, the fork one was just stuck. Had to pull the end cap off and bang it [laughs] out of there. So, if Paul can solve that problem, I'm all happy for that. Killer.
• 15:54
I'm gonna go with, uh, my, my number one nipple is Pat Smage in that fricking video. I just wish I could've been, you know, on the drone.
• 16:05
Make a huge drone to float me around and watch that guy ride, and that probably relates to the Skookum. True that. Number two would be, I got to talk to Ned Overend on the floor of the show. Asked him about if he had
• 16:22
gotten his S-Works Fat Boy yet. He's like, [in deeper voice] "No, don't have it yet, but I'm looking so forward to it, man. It's four pounds lighter than my super light Fat Boy." So that was pretty cool.
• 16:33
And they, yeah, they had the, they had the new tires- Right... based on his shaved- Right... on his shaved tire from the Birki a, a year ago. Quite, quite right.
• 16:41
And the third, I'm, like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna keep it with the people. Uh, we actually saw and said hi to Tom Ritchie.
• 16:49
I wouldn't say [laughs] that we met Tom Ritchie, but he did ride the Santana tandem ride after us, so we got to say, "Hey, dude. How's it going?" Oh, yeah, that Santana tandem was kinda hype. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 17:00
That rode really nice. Um, so those are my three things, in the form of three people and the bikes they represent, and maybe a color to go with each one. No, never mind. [laughs] No designation?
• 17:14
[laughs] No color designations. So yeah. Well, how about you, JK? Have you been following up? Have you been, uh, following the old Interbike babble? No. [laughs] Sadly, no. So what was your favorite part, then?
• 17:31
[laughs] This part where I put you on the line, on the- On the spot. Yeah, that's it. On the line. Spot, line, whatever, because you're mine. I walk the line.
• 17:42
[laughs] No, I, I saw some of the, uh, some of the Frankenstein, like, sidecar-looking things that they had. Oh, that. Yeah. That was, that was pretty rad looking. It has a red, white, and blue motif- Very kinda Pabst...
• 17:56
which is big here in 'Merica. 'Merica. America and Pabst. Yeah, man. My new, my new helmet has a red, white, and blue motif. I miss my red, white, and blue. So- I had the Evel Knievel- I'm kinda thinking, yeah...
• 18:06
thingamajiggy, but it broke my head- I'm thinking of getting some, uh- Or it saved my head [laughs]... some scotch tape- Then I had to throw it away... and turning mine into an Evel Knievel version
• 18:16
Where it would actually say Gomez on it, though Hey, uh, Travis, we're looking for a, we're looking for a question for next, next week's show. Do you have any ideas?
• 18:27
What would you want to, uh, to have us ask our call-in guests? Oh, man. Put him on the spot. Put on the spot like that. Right? No shit, I just, [laughs] I just had to come out of one.
• 18:39
[laughs] How's that fat bastard office working out for you now? Yeah, right. [laughs] First you let Nicholas- Hey, no, no, it's like these guys are out of town. I'm like, okay, well, I'm...
• 18:51
[fart sound] [laughs] Yeah, I got fucking Wednesday off. [laughs] Oh. Yeah. [laughs] So yeah, first you let Nicholas Carman slip through your fingers, and now- [laughs]
• 19:08
Well, we'll, we'll figure something out, you know? Yeah. I'll, uh... Let me, let me... Give me a couple minutes to think about that and I'll come up with something. All right.
• 19:14
You, you, you buzz in when you're ready to, uh, to let us know what you think the question should be, and we'll just blurt out nonsense as we go down this, uh, fabulous script that Sven worked very hard on. Yeah.
• 19:29
We, uh, we kind of slipped through the Fatty Farm field report there a little bit. You think so? I don't think we, uh... Oh- We haven't even- Because we don't have a question... but if we did,
• 19:38
we, we probably should say that this week's Fatty Farm field report is sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. Check them out or him out at uncledicksbikeshop.com.
• 19:49
Uncle Dick plays the guitar for us sometimes when he wants to, and that's totally cool with us, 'cause this show basically rocks so hard, I don't know if an acoustic guitar could really, you know, do it justice.
• 20:06
Oh, hey, I see Booze. [laughs] Let's revisit last week's question and talk about the results. Flask? Question mark.
• 20:17
[laughs] Last week the, uh, the call-in, uh, the call-in, uh, answering service there took a few messages from people with their flask-related... Oh. Oh, I got a flask in my hand. You're like... You know what I'm saying?
• 20:34
This is still the Bookers? Is it? Oh. Oh. 100 proof cask aged. 126. 100, 126 proof. Yeah. Oh, boy. Yeah. It's still the Bookers, all right. Yep. Wow. It, it's tasty. It burns though.
• 20:49
Travis, what did you say was your, uh, your, uh, flask filler? Flask filler? Have to go with some, uh, some Scotch, some red label. Johnny Walker? Johnny Walker. Johnny Walker Red, yep, yep.
• 21:05
Unless Grandma sent me a check or something, you know- [laughs]... of significant value. You know, if the fat fairy mother visited me, that'd be some Johnny Walker Blue in there. Mm. Oh, my. Right on. Yeah.
• 21:18
I, I, I was able to get a shot of Blue on accident, and I was like, "Yeah, thank you. Thank you." [laughs] "That'll work." [laughs] Yeah. "Thank you fairy, fairy whiskey mother." I'm like, "All right.
• 21:31
I'm gonna take that." I'd like to change my answer from hot tea to- I don't know, this ginger ale I'm having- Teppan, teppan tea... is tasty. [laughs] Lukewarm tea. [laughs] It goes down smoother when it's lukewarm.
• 21:45
I'd like to change my answer from Constant Comment tea to Earl Grey for Jean-Luc Picard, 'cause that's what he drank. They all contain caffeine, don't you know?
• 21:57
[laughs] I know, but it doesn't metabolize in your body the same way. Well, apparently you do. [laughs] That is what she said. [laughs] What are you talking about, man? I don't know. I don't metabolize. Really?
• 22:12
[laughs] I'm sticking with the Bullet. Yeah. I might stick rye in there instead of bourbon, but still Bullet. I hear good things about that Templeton Rye stuff. Yeah. It's the good stuff that kids go for.
• 22:25
[laughs] Um, no, that's, uh- It's the-... Al, uh, Al Capone. He called that the good stuff. Oh, really? Uh, you just- And Bullet is awesome, but... True that. Wow, he's mixing in pantomime with his...
• 22:39
[laughs] Whoa, whoa, what? [laughs] Oh, my God. It's magic, magic land. Hey, fat bikers. This is Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery.
• 22:51
Most of the time I listen to heavy metal, but sometimes I listen to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio. So the Fatty Farm field report. You know where I was this weekend? No. I went to- I do now.
• 23:08
[laughs] I went to Long Island, Washington for the Northwest Fat Bikes, their fifth annual meetup, and rode with a bunch of like-minded people who live 2,000 miles from us. It was just a totally cool, laid back
• 23:24
beach ride, beach bonfire. Just a good time, man. Saw some pictures. It looked like, uh, there was quite a turnout. Yeah, about 25, 30 people probably. I think they're gonna make a beach festival out of that.
• 23:40
The town wants it. The local, uh, the local peeps and the, the regional peeps seem to feel like- Oh, where you get everyone just- Yeah... ride a- Make it a regular thing, that that would be their beach gathering...
• 23:54
ride and cool groove? [laughs] They, they have a winter gathering as well. Yeah. Is there an ideal time of year that's more likely to be, uh- Boy, I don't know... the weather would be the, the thing?
• 24:02
Well, probably right after that, that time of year, sometime in mid-September, because it gets really windy and rainy in the, uh, in the fall there. So- Right. Kind of like that up in Anchorage, isn't it, Travis?
• 24:18
Yeah, it certainly can be. Uh, yeah, we just had some leftover typhoon go over us and, yeah, it was 10, 11 straight days of downpour and, uh, but it's cleared out now.
• 24:30
Got snow halfway, about a third of the way down the mountains.
• 24:34
And, uh, yeah, I'm, we've been getting down to the upper 20s at night, so even the, even, uh, calling for a chance of snow I think, uh, later next week when I'm supposed to be out bike packing. Yeah.
• 24:47
So hopefully that'll time out. So the bears are looking for dens and, uh- I hope so [laughs]... gorging themselves on anything that, uh, that they can find. Grubs. Yeah, they're still pretty active.
• 25:01
Yeah, just, just had a mauling. A moose hunter got mauled yesterday down on the Kenai Peninsula. Man. He's doing all right, but, uh,
• 25:11
yeah, he was wandering around, sneaking through the woods moose hunting, then got chomped on. Oh, man. Wow. This was the second one in, like, the last couple weeks. Lumber out there. Damn bear.
• 25:23
Yeah, I've got, I've got a little, uh, bike packing trip planned here that my wife and I are going on. Uh, going in Sunday afternoon and coming out on Tuesday, going into a, a state rental cabin
• 25:36
about three and a half miles into this valley. And then, uh, so head in on Sunday, and then Monday ride to the back of the valley and, and hopefully make it to the glacier, uh, that's at the back.
• 25:48
But yeah, so I was planning on hopefully getting a trail report for you guys, but the, uh, and some pictures, but sounds like right now the forecast is just shit rain for the duration of my trip, so.
• 26:01
Well, you never know. I might end up sitting in a cabin by a fire drinking scotch. [laughs] Could- Aw. Could be worse. I'm, I'm feeling bad. Right. Well, cool.
• 26:11
I think that maybe should we roll into links or is there another caller? [laughs] Not yet, just the one. Hey, I know a fun fact. Do you wanna know some fun facts? Sure. It's about how popular fat biking is.
• 26:27
Well, this was just, I looked this up because we're real close to four years of doing this. Mm-hmm.
• 26:32
Even though the site kind of started probably in March of 2011 maybe, Gomez and I really started hitting it pretty hard- That fall, in October... well, that fall. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty much in October.
• 26:42
But four years since we started this site, we've had over three and a half million user sessions. And eight million page views. Yeah. That's supposed to be a niche market. [laughs] Niche.
• 26:56
Well- I think we, I think we- Yeah, right on... I think we let a lot of people in. I think we let the gates open. [claps] I can only applaud from- [laughs] I mean, well, yeah. Thanks for clicking on our site.
• 27:08
He can't self applaud, but I can. [claps] We like, we like the clicks, and we like that you come and visit us and listen to our silly show. And by cracky, we had a lot of coverage from the inner bikes there. Yeah.
• 27:20
Got a bunch more videos. I probably still have 15 to 20 more videos to put up over the next week or two. You should get that Cannondale one up, dude. It's on a- That's that new bike...
• 27:30
I'm just doing them in order this year. Oh, yeah. So I, I didn't- You're just like- The one that, you know, the one that I like the most so far is that Wampack one. Yeah. That was a g- First of all, he did a good job.
• 27:39
Well- Second of all, it's an innovative product. Yeah. It's not just another we're late to the fat bike thing video. Yeah.
• 27:44
I saw that, I saw that last, last February, and I was like, "Oh, I can't believe I can't talk about this. That's so kickass." Yep. Yeah. Yeah, so that one's out now. So that one's pretty cool. Yeah.
• 27:54
That one'll be coming up pretty soon. I don't think that's up there yet. Yeah, I think that- Well, maybe. No, it's not. Okay. I don't think it's up there, but, uh, yeah, people are asking about the Cannondale.
• 28:03
We couldn't even ride the Cannondale, though. That's, that's, it's, it's kinda sad. It's like people bring bikes to Outdoor General and they're like, "Oh, yeah. You can just look at it."
• 28:11
This is for you, and you cannot have it. You can look at it. [laughs] You can touch it. You can have to, but yeah, nobody's riding that. That's Glengarry Glen Ross again.
• 28:19
[laughs] "These are the Glengarry leads, and to you, they are gold, and you can't have them." [laughs] Boom. Uh. Boom. [laughs] All right. Well, we do have another caller. Mic drop. Yay, another caller.
• 28:33
Be- believe it or don't, it's, it's the, the lost guy. Hello? Am I on? [laughs] Hey, get out my shit, Kenny. What's up, Dave? We're out riding. We're having a beer stop. Beer lap. Yeah. You with Chad?
• 28:48
You and Chad out there beer lapping? Yeah, with Chad. No, Scott. Oh, right on. Elzer came out for the evening. Yeah, right on. Nice. He called- Let's restart the beer. Cheers. Yeah, cheers. Cheers. Cheers for beers.
• 29:00
What's going on? I don't know. You called last week for, and left a message that said, "We're lost. Whoa." [laughs] We're lost. Yeah, sure enough, five feet later, we found out where we were, so we're all right.
• 29:10
[laughs] Oh, good. Yeah. What, are, are you out at the Alpha Trail? Coming up the hill. Uh, no, Minooka. Oh, right on. I haven't even been out there yet.
• 29:17
Yeah, it's our second time here, and last week was our first time, so- We were talking-... yeah, night riding on, uh, new trails. It's fucking cool. Yeah.
• 29:24
I think we were talking to somebody about that out in, uh, Las Vegas, saying that it was, they were saying it was good winter riding at that trail, so keep that in mind.
• 29:33
Well, if, if they open, yeah, it'd be, it'd be pretty sweet. Yeah, it, it... They're nice little quick, fast trails. Uh, they got a little warming hut and a bathroom, so, you know, yeah. New facilities.
• 29:44
$4 to park, $20 for beer. Who's coughing? New facilities. Yeah. Chad's hacking up a lung. [laughs] Um, yeah, hacking up a lung. Hold on. No, we're warming up a lung. [laughs] That's one warm lung.
• 29:59
That's, that's a phrase that, uh, DFL girl coined in, uh, Marquette last year, warming up the lungs. [laughs] I get you. And did you think he was talking about lungs? Warming up the lungs. Yeah, that would be scary.
• 30:13
Yeah. She wasn't warming up the lungs, unfortunately. It's a little hot in here. So, uh, what's up this weekend? Fat camp, huh? Yeah, fat camp. Damn straight. I- I booked another site.
• 30:22
I, I, I booked site 260, so I have my own site so I can, you know- It's like your own country. Uh, if I don't leave you alone. You can basically set your own monetary system. [laughs] Your own tourism bureau.
• 30:34
That's right. [laughs] Yeah, you can- It's fucking Luns country over here [laughs] You can make those meatballs again. Make those meatballs. Yeah. See you on Friday, Friday evening. Yeah. The, uh, you know- Yeah...
• 30:46
the Fat Camp guys are coming over, the Fat Camp Radio guys. Ken and Andy are coming to this little shindig. Wow. Celebrities right in our midst. I know.
• 30:57
So there'll be so much, uh, uh, internet radio swagger there that, uh- Are, are we gonna be, uh- You're-... starting from the beach? [laughs] Maybe. Maybe. We almost got- I hope so. I'm beat...
• 31:09
kicked out last year, so, you know. [laughs] The Rangers were not happy with the parking situation apparently. Well, that's why I got my own site, so. [laughs] Atta boy. Your own site is your own country.
• 31:23
Nobody ever gonna kick me out. Nobody tells El Presidente Luns- Yeah... David Luns. It's called Lunsatoria. [laughs] Lunsatoria. Lunsatoria. Very nice. I, I'll throw out my Wisconsin flag and nobody will come talk to me.
• 31:38
Just remember, you have to go back into- Oh, yeah... Illinois to g- [laughs] hit the, to hit the pit toilet. There's some Panas coming down the trail right now. Oh. Okay. Yeah. We're, we're, we're not alone.
• 31:48
Who's coming down? Po- po? I don't know. A couple guys on fat bikes actually. Really? Nice. Hey, Fat Bike Radio. Ah. [laughs] Ron Stawicki rides there, and he helped build many of those trails.
• 31:59
I, I don't know who these guys are. We're talking on the lab, I've never done this. Ron's a Sagittarius. [laughs] Yeah, we're just riding around drinking beer having fun and- He likes-... store this. Nice...
• 32:09
he likes Surly bikes. Cool. That's one brand he likes to ride his bike a lot. Well. He's a 24-hour racer. All right, second, uh, truck. Truck. Couple of Surlys? Surlys. Yeah. Is that Bubba? You can ride anyway you want.
• 32:22
Yeah, I, I think we're going the right way. Yeah, you are. Hey. Okay? Field report. Pass it over to, uh, the riders that just came in. You, you wanna talk to Fat Bike Radio? Sven and Gomez? Hey, what's up Sven and Gomez?
• 32:35
Howdy. Out there in Minooka riding, are you? Yeah. Yeah, we are. Right on. Who are we talking to? This is Dan. Dan. Hi, Dan. What's up, Dan? You're on the radio program. It's Uncle Gomez. So how long have you-... bike.
• 32:52
How long have you had a fat bike? Uh, since October of last year. Killer, man. So you're, uh, coming up on your one-year fat bike anniversary. What are you gonna buy your bike for your anniversary?
• 33:06
What am I gonna buy it for my anniversary? Yeah, you've been with it for a year. Oh. Don't you think you should upgrade it, you know, put a new pair of grips on or something, buy it something nice?
• 33:15
Well, I've, I've- [laughs]... already upgraded the grips. Okay. Uh, I just went tubeless on it. I, uh, changed up the gearing a little bit. I, I'm not sure what to do to it next. You got any ideas? Um, carbon wheels. Oh.
• 33:29
[laughs] Just off the top of my head. [laughs] Ah. [laughs] How about a new pair of tires? He, he's got some, uh, what's those, those little fat ass ones, 100 millimeters. He, he can throw her on the wheels. All right.
• 33:44
Yeah, it's 4.8. All right. Was... Hey, the guy put me on the spot. I just blurted out the first thing that came into my mind.
• 33:50
[laughs] He's lucky I didn't say, like, I don't know- Yeah, so you can get a kit on that bike... seamed stockings or something. [laughs] The guy's out here riding a long-sleeve cotton shirt.
• 33:59
Like, yo, he, he don't, he's not wearing a kit. That's what I like about him. He's all right. Yeah. [laughs] Does he have, does he have a flask with him? Curbs and kits. Curbs and kits. Kits and carbon. Kits and carbon.
• 34:12
He brought more beer on offer of one, but I think he's got his own back at the car. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think we do. Hey, John, we got beer back at the car? We got beer. Fat bikers, beer's involved.
• 34:21
Don't be, don't be stingy, Luns. Give him a beer. I'm rocking the ginger ale. It's like a, it's like a five-mile trail- That's light beer... and we had a fucking beer. [laughs] Nice. What if we get a stop in the middle?
• 34:33
[laughs] Oh, yeah. Hey, John. John. Thanks, JK. Can I talk to Fat Bike Radio? They have Fat Bike Radio. Hey, Fat Bike Radio. Howdy. Hey, how's it going? Who's this on the line? This is John. John, what's up, dude?
• 34:47
How long have you been a, uh, undercover fat biker? I've been fat biking since, oh, about almost exactly a year. Dang, man. You and your buddy- You guys-... celebrated simultaneously on your anniversary...
• 34:58
did you get Surlys at the same time? I, I rode his. He got his. I, I rode it one weekend and went out the next weekend and bought one. [laughs] Oh, that is such- Yeah... such a great story. I went to the bike store.
• 35:09
I said, "I want that one." Right on. Quick conversion. They're fat biking and night riding, so that- Gnarly Surlys right here. That's how it should be ridden. And they're drinking beer, so they're good.
• 35:19
You guys be careful with the cool department right now. The Gnarly Surly brothers. They're good. They can hang. If they bust out a bowl, that'd be fucking wild.
• 35:26
[laughs] That's what I had when I was busted out guaranteed. They're just having some breakfast cereal out there night riding. [laughs] Yes. You know it. You know it's best eaten out of a bowl. Hey, uh- Yeah... uh, John?
• 35:41
Yeah. Did you, uh, did you follow any of the inner bike coverage from the last week from the Big Shoe out there in Las Vegas? You know, I looked at a couple of things on, um, on Facebook. Okay.
• 35:53
Um, just, just to see, to see the new fat bikes. Anything strike your fancy? You know what I, what I want? I want the, um, I want the new Surly 96. Oh, nice. But I hear they're not coming out till December now. Yeah.
• 36:05
There's a, you see a lot of stuff at that show that doesn't actually exist yet and may not exist in the form you see it at the show either. A lot of what they do there besides, um, show stuff is, like, new ideas.
• 36:16
It's like, are people gonna buy into this idea? Well, let's change it a little bit before we bring it to market.
• 36:21
So sometimes what you actually see isn't what you actually get, but, you know, Trek's doing a good job on, on...
• 36:27
Even though they came late to the game, they kinda jumped in with both feet and are doing a pretty decent job on that stuff. Yeah. We're gonna get a 9.6 to test, so. 9.6.
• 36:35
You'll, uh- You'll be able to, you know, see pictures of it and know how much it weighs- I, I wanna, I wanna hear about it when you got one. When you got one to test, I wanna hear about it. For sure.
• 36:45
I think we're gonna test it up at Cuyuna, up there in the Brainerd, Minnesota area, so. Cuyuna. Have you, have you guys, uh, have you guys put plus bike wheels on your fat bikes yet? No. Um, no, they won't...
• 36:58
You talking about that, the 27 and a half or the 29 plus? Well, either way. Either way. I guess, yeah, the 29 plus doesn't fit the original Farley, but I believe they do fit the new 9/6.
• 37:07
Sorry, I got a Farley with a fork for it. Pretty sure. Yeah, the, the 27 and a half won't fit it either, so the, the biggest thing you can get out here is a 26 by four. Right on.
• 37:14
That's why I want, that's why I want the new one. Gotcha. Taylor did. Well, I think you're our first live on-trail interview of people that never- Yeah. We're like, wow.
• 37:26
So I think that we should probably take you all to Sizzler. That's when you were supposed to cheer. [laughs] Go Sizzler. Or maybe Outfor- No, I- 12 bucks, I'll let you have what you want...
• 37:38
gotta get back to the trailhead. All right, guys. Thanks for calling in. See you later. Riverside out. All right. See you. Bye. Bye. See you this weekend. Bye. Dave Lunz, Chad Wilson, Scott Melzer, John, and Dan. Yeah.
• 37:52
I don't know John and Dan yet, but, uh- But-... I'm sure we will know them because- They're the gnarly Farley brothers-... they're the fat bike brethren... in Minooka, up there in the, uh, greater, uh, Waukesha area.
• 38:03
Right on. Wouldn't that be? Yep. Okay. So got anything to say about these links? Uh- What do you think about links? I don't know.
• 38:13
There's some, uh, this guy, John Withrow, rode a fat bike, uh, on 112 miles on the bike leg of the Wisconsin Ironman [laughs] to raise money for reserve aid. Oh, cool.
• 38:24
He did, he did the 112 miles in, like, six hours, which isn't, isn't bad if you're- No... on a road bike, I don't think- [clears throat]... for most people, so he was a pretty fit looking guy. He had the big mortar.
• 38:35
He did say that after spending all that time on the bike, though, that his, he was sitting a lot more upright. His back was a little sore. Really? Oh, yeah. But his legs felt okay. Hmm. So.
• 38:44
And they raised a, a lot of money, 25,000 bucks. I don't know if it was just him or his team or whatever, but they did raise a bunch of money.
• 38:51
Oh, I li- I, I like that a lot, 'cause every time I see the Ironman going, it's always so many... You know, like, it, it's like, ah, oh, man, if you knocked over, you'd-
• 39:04
Triathletes generally- Yeah, you're, you're not gonna... Yeah. You're, you- Are a subsect of the cycling industry- Exactly... or cycling culture that have their unique quirks, et cetera.
• 39:15
But I, but, but, but I did- Like bed riders- But I did like- But they are, they're all riders... I like the fact of- Of some sort...
• 39:19
of, of that where it's like, you know, y- the, the plus and minus of time if you're just doing it for endurance is that.
• 39:28
You know, okay, maybe- Most of the time they do ride- You, you'll cut five do- like $5, five minutes [laughs] off of, like, one leg you do fat bike. Or you just- It's our new site. It's 29 minus ebike triathlete.com.
• 39:43
[laughs] Plus. [laughs] Hashtag plus bearmowings.com. With flasks. [laughs] With flasks. Oh, stories from the Alaskan bush. How about those plus bike links?
• 40:00
You know, you actually been rocking, you've been putting videos up on, about plus bikes on both fatbike.com and plusbikes.com. Maybe next week's question will be like, "Are we being redundant?" Well, the- Should we quit?
• 40:15
[laughs] Well, kinda. No. He liked that one. [laughs] Oh, that's an awesome question. [laughs] Are we being redundant? No. Okay, here's, here's the way I kinda see it. Okay.
• 40:25
Is that, uh, uh, plus bikes specifically should go on the plus bike site, but fat bikes- Mm-hmm... that are using plus bike wheels- Mm... are in and of themselves plus bikes, too.
• 40:35
But they are still fat bikes, just with different shoes. But I think our audience could- Who says? Yeah... our audience could say to us, "Ah, forget about that plus bike site. Just put it all on fat bikes."
• 40:49
Well, they are. Well- But the fortunate thing is- No, that-... advertisers probably won't say that. [laughs] Well, true. Why, you know, why make a, make a s- Why cross the streams? Why, why, why make a division-
• 41:01
When we're all united, when we're all cousins. Yeah. The, the division is a marketing thing. Yeah. I don't know. A lot of people that do plus bikes- And we're not in the-... don't get fat bikes. Mm. So.
• 41:12
So somebody stole some plus bike stuff over there at Interbike. No way. Yeah, that, remember that, uh, Blackburn, the Niner that was in the Blackburn booth with- Yeah... all the bike packing stuff? Yeah. Gone. Lifted.
• 41:24
Along with five other bikes or four other bikes that were in their truck after the show Saturday. Where was Niner at the show? Um, I didn't see them at the show. But their bike was at the Blackburn booth. Yeah.
• 41:37
That's the, many, many companies do that. We saw a new brand from QBP at the show called Heller. It's a carbon fiber bike with...
• 41:51
What's, it's X5 level componentry on a carbon bike with a carbon fork that's red for, like, 2,199. A rigid bike, or with a Bluto I think is 2,599. Believe you're right. Yeah. Heller- Another-... bikes...
• 42:08
Q- QBP brand. Yeah, their fourth- And they're defending-... fat bike brand... the open mold concept. Really? Just saying they can get stuff cheaper by doing it that way. So that's an open mold bike? Right.
• 42:19
So Travis could go over there, start his own company, buy the same bike. Call it Travis Bikes. Call it Travis Bikes. Yep. Oh, sweet. And what kind of warranty are you gonna give me?
• 42:28
[laughs] What kind of warranty are you gonna give a big fat guy that likes to run into stuff? [laughs] I'm going to give you- I'd like to, I'd like to test the integrity... you a one day warranty. 24 hours.
• 42:38
24 hour warranty. [laughs] Nice. I think Heller's going for the lifetime. Yeah. I'm not positive, but that could be the case. Could be It sure does look pretty. I am a sucker for a red bike.
• 42:50
You know, I have red trucks, red bikes. Maybe I should be a fireman. Maybe. [laughs] So did you think of a question yet, Travis? Just going hard coded. Oh. Did you, did you come up with a question of the week for us?
• 43:06
I did. I did. [laughs] Uh, let's see. You know, wintertime riding approaching. Uh, for your wintertime ride, do you prefer a rigid fork or a shock? Yeah. Yeah. Sounds good. There you go. Question of the week is- Yeah...
• 43:23
put that right in here. For winter rides, do you prefer rigid or suspended for your fork? Way to pull it out of your, uh, pull- I'm, I'm typing... pull it out of your hat there. [laughs] Way to pull it out of my ass.
• 43:38
Well, I was gonna say ass or, uh, you know- Yeah, I'm gonna send my ass out on Bluto next week. [laughs] Yeah, we have, uh, you know, who wins the, the derby to see who
• 43:48
could get us a test bike the quickest after Interbike. Well, the big winner is Framed Bikes. Really? We received a Wolf Tracks fat bike that Dave Kruger is going to test for us.
• 44:05
That's Freddy Kruger's bro. And Dave Kruger just had a new baby, two weeks old. It's either a boy or a girl, presumably human. Congratulations there, Dave. Way to go.
• 44:19
Hope that doesn't cut into your, like, test report on this new bike and stuff. Cool. I got a question. Okay.
• 44:32
Sven, Gomez, on your return from Interbike, in your time at the outdoor demo, what was your guys', uh, favorite bike that you test rode, plus or fat? Well, that I test rode, I'm gonna go with the Borealis Crestone.
• 44:50
Yeah, I'm gonna go with the Skookum, for sure. But I didn't get to ride the Skookum, 'cause I'm not a Specialize fan. I just, I said I was gonna go take pictures of it, and then they had pedals on the thing.
• 45:01
[laughs] So what are you supposed to do when a bike- What are you supposed to do?... has pedals on it? They, they must have meant that it didn't.
• 45:06
I mean, I guess- Well, I had to take it to a photogenic spot, too, up on the, on the short loop up there at, uh, Bl- Bootleg Canyon. Yeah, the, the, with the- It, it felt good.
• 45:15
It, it, it reminds me of the bike I ride normally, only with, I ride a four-inch normally for a trail bike. This has five-inch tires on it, and they really felt good. Nice. They were Jumbo Jims, I believe.
• 45:26
Yeah, those tires will rock- And they were good on the dirt... in a trail. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but it's a very playful bike, much more of a mountain bike than a snow bike, and I think a lot of people are gonna dig it.
• 45:38
Cool. Skookum's a good answer. Yeah. And then the bike that we rode together, if we had to say what was the- That was a very pretty picture- [laughs]... I must say. It was very aw. Aw. You guys look aw.
• 45:49
See, I'm, I'm glad we had Chris along. They wore, they wore match-y shirts, and, and then they got on an orange bike. Yeah. It was, you know, there's, what happens in Vegas doesn't necessarily- [laughs]... stay at Vegas.
• 46:02
[laughs] Fair warning. That wasn't Vegas, though. Yeah, that was Boulder City. That was Boulder City. Doesn't have the same tagline. Boulder, Boulder City, we built your damn dam. Damn dam.
• 46:11
Yeah, and we're a little angry when our pictures get out. Well, we could always say thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast.

• 47:01
[laughs] All right. I'm the last guy you wanna draw on anything. Okay. But I, I, uh, I was wondering if you guys got, you know- We're working on something-... anything coming up next-... super secret right now...
• 47:12
in the store? Supposedly super secret. That we, that we, you know, we, we, we can't let on, 'cause then everybody's gonna draw a picture of what I say and send it to us, and then- So something's coming...
• 47:23
so something is in the pipeline, or in my pipe, and we're gonna smoke it, and- In a line... then we'll figure it out. But until then- Pass it on...
• 47:34
you should probably join us next week, where the question of the week is... For winter rides, do you prefer rigid or suspension? Call 818-918-2453.
