- 2:20Shout out. He in here.
- 2:22This is White's with us tonight and we are going to go through a
- 2:26bunch of stuff. Obviously we got a ton of
- 2:28football stuff that I know we got to find tell Minds interview
- 2:30later on tonight but we're going to start with basketball for a
- 2:34couple reasons. A, the Hokies have one game
- 2:37left. The ACC tournament is next week
- 2:39the with Start play tomorrow in the ACC tournament so Sheldon,
- 2:44welcome back has the road been brother, it's been okay.
- 2:48You know, it's been kind of an up-and-down basketball season.
- 2:51I know the men beat Louisville, couple nights ago.
- 2:53They had me worried there for a sec there, a dump up I think
- 2:56three with like 10 minutes left and went to like a 4C, nothing
- 2:59run to to get the dub but yeah, just been, it's been a tough
- 3:02season man. But we'll see what happened
- 3:04mean. It's March.
- 3:05So, anything could happen in the ACC tournament.
- 3:08Anything can happen in Before we get into sort of what kind of
- 3:11going to Deep dive of the Season tonight, Shelton's been pulling
- 3:14data points and we've got some questions.
- 3:15We want to ask him and kind of figure out, why is this team
- 3:19where they are. Because as we said here, just
- 3:22for we, got home. Tally was mentioning how He it's
- 3:27like what the football teams, your daughter, you'll never
- 3:30spank her but the basketball teams like your son and you'll
- 3:33take the behind the Woodshed, be the.
- 3:36So we're trying to figure out why but before we get into all
- 3:39of that, I want to talk about actually some really good news
- 3:43in shall not. Let you go a little bit more on
- 3:44this but got a pretty big Prospect commitment.
- 3:48Just the other day. AJ Swinton small 46 585 from
- 3:54Sierra Canyon High School. He's for those who do not know
- 4:00that is where Ronnie James plays.
- 4:03That is a really good basketball, high school, three
- 4:07star by 24/7, a composite four-star, right at the top 100
- 4:12in the composite Shelton. You had a chance to kind of.
- 4:15Look at this guy. I mean, what does he bring for
- 4:18the Hokies in the future? Yeah, very talented kid.
- 4:22Athletic like you said, he is a three-star for started.
- 4:26Ending on, you know, kind of what metric you look at them.
- 4:28And I think once you get outside like the top 80 top 90s cut on
- 4:31you know there's no real difference but he is a very
- 4:33projectable at the college level you know six foot six or
- 4:36thereabouts He's listed as a small forward I think and feel
- 4:40sort of like a Justin mutts type of role you know but he's got
- 4:43some some Daris maximum and that he's you know, long and
- 4:46obviously athletic. I was looking at a quote as far
- 4:51as you know, how we committed. Obviously, he used to play at
- 4:53the Matha which was where Mike Jones was formerly the head
- 4:56coach. Um, so that was kind of the
- 4:57connection there. Now, an assistant Mike Jones is
- 4:59on the team and there's a quote from AJ we said, you know,
- 5:03talking about my kind of softens.
- 5:04He said it's a free-flowing offense, they share the ball and
- 5:07you can tell that they're well coached and sets the run in the
- 5:09half court. So I think that kind of gives
- 5:11you a sense of what, you know, this is going to come and it's
- 5:13not just like some freak athlete that's get it done.
- 5:15I like he's going to play Within the offense, you know, very high
- 5:18IQ player. So I'm happy to see that.
- 5:20I think despite his high ranking he is more like a developmental
- 5:23guy, you know. Maybe you your red shirt on for
- 5:25one year and then kind of Get them acclimated after that.
- 5:28So there's going to be some sort of, you know, developmental
- 5:31development there. He's not a guy that's going to
- 5:33come in. I don't think and just, you
- 5:35know, start right away. Not like a Rodney rice type of
- 5:37type of recruit, but he is very, very good.
- 5:40I think the future of Virginia Tech basketball, especially at
- 5:43the guard position is looking very good for the next couple of
- 5:45years. The I love here that I'm as we
- 5:51look at a guy like him, you know, I don't think really has
- 5:54Mike young. Really had a player with this
- 5:58type of length that also has this this level of athleticism
- 6:01since he's been a Virginia Tech. I mean, not well, maybe job an
- 6:06isil but I think that is the difference was, you know, Bama.
- 6:08So was not a great shooter. He's more of a slasher and I'll
- 6:12see, you know, he wasn't getting playing time and wanted so he
- 6:14transferred out you had, you know, dearest Maddox who I
- 6:17think. It's when a little bit longer
- 6:20and, you know, obviously there we don't know, you know what,
- 6:22he's going to provide so far yet, but I would imagine he's a
- 6:24little bit more athletic and physical than Maddux.
- 6:26Just what you know, what it seemed like on watching tape and
- 6:29then Ronnie rice to find the best cop.
- 6:30Just, you know, in terms of like is physical, it's physical skill
- 6:33sets. The length particular kind of
- 6:35can kind of clogged up passing lanes and stuff like that.
- 6:37So I mean rice is probably like I said the best comp but it's a
- 6:40very much like a we're not used to getting these types of
- 6:43recruits typically under the Mi kyung era normal go off script a
- 6:47little bit here. Yeah, now Shelton, glad you're
- 6:50here. I'm gonna put you on the spot a
- 6:51little bit. Okay, I'll get on Facebook the
- 6:53other day and I don't even know if this person was a Virginia
- 6:56Tech fan, I see in a big banner brawny.
- 7:01James is looking at Virginia. Tech, do you want to talk about
- 7:07that sir? I don't know, man.
- 7:09I don't know. I just I'm hearing some rumors.
- 7:12That his teammate Aegis win. What he wants to play with his
- 7:16teammate. A just went over at Sierra
- 7:17Canyon, okay? I cannot confirm or deny, those
- 7:20rumors. All I can say is, you know,
- 7:22check your sources. Make sure you look at the
- 7:25reputable replica has a, she was ah, damn Source.
- 7:31I'm not sharing that. Yeah, I just say, it's always,
- 7:35you know, look for the blue. Check the blue.
- 7:37Check on Twitter for the, the orange, check our the square.
- 7:40I don't know what it is. Whatever you like, whatever,
- 7:42check your legacy, check marks before you start.
- 7:45All right, I'm going right in the article.
- 7:48About to go and put it from my source.
- 7:50I heard Bernie is coming y'all. So obviously tally going to be
- 8:00getting us in trouble real quick.
- 8:02G zp z i like spicy spicy. Well I heard LeBron James has
- 8:10eligibility. He's going to come play with
- 8:11brawny at Tech. I mean you know let's just throw
- 8:13him. He's got four years.
- 8:18Let's go. This way, we got some now
- 8:19questions. Let's get into this season and
- 8:22let's talk about some things about why have we been 17 and 13
- 8:26in? Especially why has it been, you
- 8:29know, since an 11 and 1 start is the team now, you know, 6 and 12
- 8:36in the last 18. Brian, I know you got one right
- 8:39out the gate. You want to hit Sheldon with,
- 8:42yeah. This one kind of has been
- 8:43rolling around for a while. I know we got the the double,
- 8:46the road against Louisville but This team has struggled mightily
- 8:50in ACC play in the road contest. When you looked at the data
- 8:56shown and you see any metrics metrics that have any sort of
- 8:59sista sista cool significance, in terms of variation from home
- 9:04games versus away games, I don't think there's a huge variation.
- 9:10I was looking at some numbers before the podcast and I found
- 9:12that Virginia Tech was about middle of pack in the ACC in
- 9:15terms of net increase in Agency at home, compared to on the
- 9:20road. Meaning, you know, they're not
- 9:22that much more efficient at home.
- 9:25So I think, you know, some of the road struggles might be a
- 9:27little bit overblown, just in the sense that like they're
- 9:29there in every game. They're just losing the close
- 9:31games are not finishing, finishing it out, it was in
- 9:33college. I went to overtime Clemson.
- 9:36They lost the last S 3 so I think there's been some bad luck
- 9:38involved, honestly. But I guess the thing that sense
- 9:41of the most is probably just a shooting splits, like Tech has
- 9:43been a pretty bad shooting team on the road.
- 9:45We saw that against Clemson which was probably their best.
- 9:48Defensive performance of the season but encodes a coincided
- 9:51with their worst offensive performance of the Year
- 9:53Syracuse. I think that shot three of 19
- 9:55from three and one of those was in garbage time.
- 9:58So you know when you're on the road a shooting team like Tech
- 10:00that's you know, kind of built around three point shooting,
- 10:03sometimes you get into a different environment and just
- 10:05not comfortable as a shooter and different gyms.
- 10:09So that's probably my best guess.
- 10:11But outside of that, I just think it's an inability to close
- 10:13games down the stretch, really is what it boils down to.
- 10:16We're also talked about, I mean, just kind of staying on what
- 10:19you're doing that. Now you've done a lot of
- 10:21research and that's kind of your thing.
- 10:24I guess. The, what about the like the
- 10:26point of entry infants is when we're talking, you know, layups
- 10:29and offensive rebound layups, you know, things like that.
- 10:32I mean, I think if we Deep dive into, that tells a little bit of
- 10:35a story as well. Please, please make me feel like
- 10:38my eyes haven't fooled me all year, Sheldon on that, because I
- 10:41swear every time I see this team, we were missing.
- 10:44Literally point-blank shots Whether defend it or not
- 10:47defended. So what's the data say or the
- 10:51data says your eyes. Unfortunately might be following
- 10:53you a little bit. We I was like it's so weird.
- 10:58I think we rank like 60 sec in terms of lab percentage.
- 11:01Like you know it's around like 60% converting layups which you
- 11:05know I mean that's kind of know the road I think we've had a few
- 11:08games. Like I said this year where it's
- 11:09just gone completely off the rails.
- 11:11Like, you know, Georgia Tech you just can't make anything so it
- 11:14probably like kind of exacerbates like your perception
- 11:16of Of how good we are in that. And that category, and I don't
- 11:19have the data for this, but maybe it's looking like
- 11:20conference. But it's different than, you
- 11:22know, the entire season when Tech was obviously playing well
- 11:24during the non-conference portion of the season.
- 11:27So, I honestly like my, I mean, we're going to buy this little
- 11:30bit, but my biggest concern is just lack of, you know, getting
- 11:33to the free-throw line. Like Tech is, you know,
- 11:35traditionally under Mike young, one of the worst teams in terms
- 11:38of drawing free throws. And you can see this year, there
- 11:40were like three bottom forty, I think in free-throw roads in the
- 11:44yeah, in the country. Yes.
- 11:47So that's you know that's kind of par for the course of my God.
- 11:49We just don't we just don't really attack the basket a lot.
- 11:52And so you just it's hard to you know, draw fouls and obviously
- 11:55get yourself in, you know, scoring situations like that.
- 11:59Give you a two in foul trouble. That that's my biggest concern.
- 12:01Like I think the layups kind of you know they come and go but
- 12:05the lack of lack of gain to line is a big issue for me.
- 12:08Well yeah because that kind of par for the course with the
- 12:10motion offense versus more. Dribble Drive type type offense,
- 12:14basically a so mi kyung doesn't really recruit Slasher.
- 12:16As you know, he wants guys that can shoot that, you know, can
- 12:19can dribble that can handle the ball.
- 12:20He's always emphasize skill over athleticism, traditionally and
- 12:23recruiting not always, but that's usually the case.
- 12:26So obviously with emotion-based offense, you know, you're moving
- 12:28the ball, you're passing around, you want to get three pointers
- 12:30and and post-ops those are typically the two shots that,
- 12:33you know, you cut that this offense kind of revolves around.
- 12:36Its not like where you just give a guy, the ball is going to go
- 12:39clean up the dribble. You haven't little bit, you know
- 12:40what? Iris Radford a guy like that but
- 12:42for the most part you know he wants to he wants to move the
- 12:44ball once the pass the ball. So you're just not going to Lot
- 12:46of draw penetration. Well, in terms of those layup,
- 12:49percentages, we're looking at, probably at liar bias, on those
- 12:53like handful of games where it just looks pretty, pretty awful.
- 12:58Yeah, I think so well, I mean, I'm looking here just pulled up
- 13:01the Miami, you know, box score and absolutely right Sheldon.
- 13:05I mean, they shot the free throw shot, 19, free, throws a game
- 13:08where text only shooting 7, they go 15 of 19.
- 13:12Tech goes for 6 from the line as a six-point game.
- 13:14So to your point right there, I mean, I mean that is a massive
- 13:18difference in. We look at the stats and say
- 13:21right there. Well, you lost by six.
- 13:23You shoot more free, throws close your game.
- 13:26Maybe a win. Let me ask this though because
- 13:28something I did a little research on.
- 13:30Yes, I did do research in basketball.
- 13:32Yeah. So good about myself is I
- 13:34decided to go through to find the rebound margins.
- 13:36And basically Tech ranked 194 in the country.
- 13:39Basically, zero, basically 50/50 pitiful.
- 13:44It's pitiful but it's not quite For the course, but then I look
- 13:47at a game. Like the Miami game.
- 13:51Another great example, Miami, only outrebounded Us by one, but
- 13:56the significant, it looks like how big was our differential in
- 14:00offensive rebounding for this year.
- 14:03Offensive rebounding. I don't I think we are usually
- 14:06middle of the pack. I can put the numbers up quick
- 14:09so we are yeah, about a little bit below average 19, ACC in
- 14:13terms of offensive rebounding, okay?
- 14:15So, you know, not not great, like you said, yeah.
- 14:18And then 194 slightly under roughly middle of the country.
- 14:22But if you're saying nine, that can only imagine where that is
- 14:25in the, you know, aspects of the country.
- 14:27And again, it was some games. Then again, my eyes aren't
- 14:31fooling me. Because you're giving me the
- 14:32data backing it up. There were some games.
- 14:35It looks like they just didn't want to get in after rebounds.
- 14:38It was just like I understand a long rebound is what it is.
- 14:42Everybody here has played some sort of basketball or play
- 14:45Pick-up Games where somebody shoots you shouting.
- 14:46So long rebound, ain't nothing to do about that but it's when
- 14:50you're seeing the ball right there and people not crashing
- 14:55and that's where it's like. Come on guys and I know you know
- 14:59what do you attest that to is it just the coaching style is it?
- 15:01This is just the bodies we have I would say it's probably
- 15:05influence a little bit both when it comes to those Services
- 15:08splits like you know turnovers free-throws rebounds, a lot of
- 15:11it is based on the scheme in the style, you know.
- 15:13It's no different than football like, are you a big play
- 15:15offense? You know, if you're if you're a
- 15:17quarterback who plays in a big play offense, you're probably
- 15:18have a low completion percentage, but it doesn't
- 15:20necessarily mean that you're a bad quarterback, it just means
- 15:22that you're going to go for like the All or Nothing types of
- 15:24throws. So, with rebounding, it's
- 15:26probably just, you know, as I don't know what Mike young
- 15:28strategy is in rebounding, but my guess is he probably doesn't
- 15:31want guys. Crashing the boards too hard,
- 15:33you know, just as one example if you guys I don't know if you
- 15:35guys watch MBA but the rates of offensive rebounding, the MBR
- 15:40actually had at historical lows and the reason for that is
- 15:43because a lot of teams just want to get back intron on defense.
- 15:46They don't want to give up transition opportunities because
- 15:47what happens is if you crash the glass and you don't get the
- 15:50rebound that allows the the offense to get out in transition
- 15:54and position scoring the other on the other side.
- 15:55So that's kind of where the strategy part plays into it.
- 15:58And, I mean, yeah, it's just kind of, you know, his The way
- 16:02that, you know, a coach likes to play.
- 16:05So yeah. So pretty much like I'm on like
- 16:09a fan. So I guess watching watching the
- 16:11Lakers and watching ad, he's up around the three-point line a
- 16:16lot. You know with him being a
- 16:187-footer, he's up around the three-point line, a lot more
- 16:21than I want him to be. And I think that kind of goes
- 16:24the same way with the Hokies somebody like Grandpa silly, you
- 16:28know, because he shoots the ball so well he's up.
- 16:31Around that three-point line a lot either looking for a shot
- 16:34or, you know, setting a pick for somebody else to get a shot.
- 16:38So I think similar to what you're saying they're showing is
- 16:41that, you know, when he's there, I mean you got to get back
- 16:44because you're pretty much playing safety to get back if
- 16:47they get that rebound because they're going to get out in
- 16:50transition. So when you have your big men
- 16:53that stretch the floor, like that, you don't have your big
- 16:55man rebound and is that, that kind of, what you, what, you
- 16:58see. Yes, that's a great point and
- 17:00one that I didn't even think Kyle, but yes, if you have a,
- 17:03you know, tech place small anyway, like you got much to six
- 17:06foot seven at the for bacilli. 658 of the fiber is really more
- 17:09like a stretch for facilities at the three-point line.
- 17:12Well he's not getting offensive rebounds so I mean he shoots a
- 17:15lot of Threes. He's one of the best three-point
- 17:17dream. Big one in the country for his
- 17:18for his size. If you look guys for six foot
- 17:21eight there are not a lot of 64, the guys who shoot threes like
- 17:24the silly. So I mean of course in the
- 17:26morning shooting three is the less rebounds is getting and
- 17:28that's again that's just a stylistic preference.
- 17:32Very nice. So I think the next thing I love
- 17:36did put this in and I'm hoping you had a chance to look it up.
- 17:39Was give me the best plus-minus guys give me the top three.
- 17:43Give me the bottom three is far as that goes with the team
- 17:46because that's just a tallish. It's tough for me to find.
- 17:50I don't have all the data but I know plus minus is always
- 17:54telling because okay the guy's a plus it's like you can put him
- 17:58on the floor any time any Situation.
- 18:01It's going to come out on that positive.
- 18:03It doesn't, it isn't, you know, - what's wrong?
- 18:07Can we not score, or is he not good defensively?
- 18:09So who's our who's our guys? They're not targeting anybody,
- 18:13but just kind of painting that picture.
- 18:16Well, it's a definitely basilius the best just because of his
- 18:18ability to score from multiple levels and you know defensively
- 18:21as well he's going to get, you know, a lot of rebounds and like
- 18:24all those blocks for stats that kind of juice is, you know,
- 18:27Advanced metrics and stuff like that.
- 18:29Much is up there too. Obviously Couture, I think
- 18:31Couture's little bit different because he like, he's efficient
- 18:35but he also does so many things that don't show up in a box
- 18:37score. So, you know, it is his values,
- 18:40not necessary always reflected in the statistical metrics and
- 18:45as I think, Padula, kind of middle of the pack, like he
- 18:48scores a lot, but he's not very efficient, kind of a
- 18:50high-volume. Three-point shooter has not shot
- 18:52the ball. Well, from three this year, I
- 18:53think he's play a little bit too much hero ball.
- 18:55Not shot selection is a little bit hit or miss.
- 18:58And then if you look at the bottom You know, I think empty
- 19:01Collins has struggled, you know, freshman freshman gonna hit a
- 19:05wall, sometimes his three-point shot hasn't really been there.
- 19:08You know, offensively he's not a guy that defense is really going
- 19:11to key in on. So you know, he's one guy that I
- 19:14think obviously, you know, even understand like there's going to
- 19:17be some Growing Pains as a freshman you come in and and he
- 19:19was always going to be like, more of a developmental guy,
- 19:22because you expected rise to be there, you know, filling in that
- 19:25the backup point guard spot and and you figure Maddox as well,
- 19:29if he hadn't had A family situation with rice and Max.
- 19:32And there is guards Collins would not be getting minutes
- 19:34that he's getting and same for the for Camden as well.
- 19:37So it's just kind of situation where the lack of guard depth
- 19:40has forced. Younger guys, that are not ready
- 19:42for the minutes like rice, excuse me, Collins of Camden, to
- 19:45step up into the role so they should not be playing in.
- 19:47So Yeah, let me ask this so I'm our official luck ranking.
- 19:54What is that right now? It is at I believe three 40th,
- 19:59I'll double check to confirm. Okay.
- 20:02It's so everyone knows there's three hundred and fifty eight
- 20:05teams in the NCAA division. 1 re actually 58 358 this year so our
- 20:15keeps going up 340. So like bottom 20 essentially.
- 20:22All right. Can you talk a little bit more
- 20:23about how that's how they derive that and how that's affected the
- 20:27Hokies? Yeah.
- 20:28So it's kind of a tricky subject.
- 20:30I think there's a lot of I guess, maybe you might say you
- 20:36know, frustration between likes the sort of like analytics crowd
- 20:40versus you know the the eye test crowd with a metric like luck.
- 20:43It's basically just you know how many what percent of your close
- 20:48games are you winning? Relative to, you know, all the
- 20:50other games. So if you have a really bad
- 20:52record in close games, your luck metric is going to be bad.
- 20:55If you're very good in close games.
- 20:57Generally speaking, your luck is going to be very good Tech, has
- 21:00been very unfortunate this year. They are 1 in 5 and Conference
- 21:03games decided by five points or less.
- 21:06Whereas you'll get a team like pit.
- 21:08They are second place in the ACC I think and they are six and one
- 21:11in games decided by five points or less.
- 21:13So you just look at that differential right there.
- 21:15I mean, that's I mean, that's a difference of the standings.
- 21:17Like that's, that's all there is to it.
- 21:19Um, let me just tell you something Shelton.
- 21:22Virginia Tech has a bad luck ranking in all sports.
- 21:28If you go back and look at some football games, I look rating is
- 21:32at the bottom two, but let's continue.
- 21:35Yeah, yeah, I think we could. Yeah, we could go on, hold
- 21:37tension about that. But I think, you know, typically
- 21:42with it was stats like this, you have to kind of get like a large
- 21:44sample size. Like look over multiple years of
- 21:46data, Tech was pretty unfortunate with luck Lassie.
- 21:49Even until the ACC tournament, we're just, you know, kind of
- 21:51that stretch in late February, early March or kind of turned it
- 21:54all around. This year's team is not seen
- 21:56such a turn around, and I think that could probably be due to
- 21:59Personnel probably due to coaching and obviously some luck
- 22:02involved as well. So, you know, with, with a stat
- 22:05like that, I mean, Kim beom you who created the status said,
- 22:07like, it's not a perfect stat. You know, there's no such thing
- 22:10as a perfect stat. There's not, there's always
- 22:12gonna be some sort of balance of, you know, Personnel,
- 22:15coaching decisions, and all that, you know, who you're
- 22:17playing matchups, all that stuff, so it Plays into it.
- 22:21I would hope that it would improve next year.
- 22:23If it does not if we're, if we're 344 next year, then I
- 22:26would have some serious reservations then it's will
- 22:28reservations about the coaching staff is like you can
- 22:31continuously be bad luck without something being on the coaching
- 22:34staff there. And, by the way, Sheldon, it's
- 22:37not 20%. We're in the bottom eight
- 22:39percent of luck, we're literally.
- 22:42Yeah, I did the math on that. I mean, it's just brutal to see,
- 22:46but like you say, you know, where does he come from?
- 22:49Where does, You get to a point where it's not looking.
- 22:50Exactly. You are who you are.
- 22:52You can't close close games out, you struggle in those situations
- 22:56and and that's what we've seen so much this year.
- 22:59And I think it's so much. It's not, it's not so much.
- 23:03You know, we lose a close game to Miami Valley, set it on here,
- 23:0610 days ago, Miami's a good team.
- 23:08You lost 1 by 6, okay? It is what it is.
- 23:11It's the Georgia Tech's. It's the Boston College's.
- 23:13It's struggling with the Notre. Dame, who have the worst?
- 23:16I mean I think Sheldon brought up a good point when he said,
- 23:19It, he talked about last year's team and it kind of takes us to
- 23:23our next Point as well. He talked about, you know, we
- 23:26had some contributors last year is stepped up in crunch time.
- 23:31And pretty much, you know, want to stay ACC Championship.
- 23:34So another point they will ask you showed, what do you, who do
- 23:39you think we, you know, we missed the most off of a team
- 23:42like last year's team, you know, you had a storm Murphy there.
- 23:45You had Kevin Loomer Eileen, who do you Think we missed the most.
- 23:50Yeah. So that's actually good.
- 23:51A good setup for the next set of had.
- 23:53So I think one of the most underrated stats from last
- 23:56year's team during the stretch run, where Tech started to win.
- 23:59I think they finished 13 and 3, some of that in the last, you
- 24:02know, 16, whatever it was during that stretch storm, Murphy
- 24:05average, 20 minutes per game. So, if you have a point guard,
- 24:09averaging, 20 minutes per game, you know, that does a huge.
- 24:12That's, that's you shrimp terms of just, you know, his ability
- 24:14to, you know, stay stay fresh. Not be fatigued.
- 24:18You had some Padula come off the bench.
- 24:19I mean, there are multiple games last year where Sean Padula
- 24:21played more minutes and storm Murphy.
- 24:23So that kind of one-two punch a point guard, really helped them
- 24:25a lot and sure there's just, you know, preserving preserving
- 24:27their legs. Whereas you look at this year's
- 24:29team, I mean but those playing literally the entire game and
- 24:32rice, you know, he's only going to give you a few minutes there.
- 24:35He's pretty much put those pretty much the only, you know,
- 24:37polish point guard you have. So I think if I were to answer
- 24:41your question, I actually think Nikki Malin was an underrated
- 24:45Miss, and I say that, like, I owe him an apology because I was
- 24:49kind of overlooking how, you know, how much we miss them?
- 24:52I obviously didn't anticipate, you know, losing Rodney rice and
- 24:55there's Max from a majority of the Season.
- 24:57Battalion is a guy that's he's a good Defender.
- 25:00He can shoot the three well not as better than a lot of people
- 25:03give him credit for, you know, he can he can score little bit,
- 25:07he can drive a little bit, he was a guy that just based on
- 25:10injury is like you I mean we we love to have a guy like that.
- 25:12At and now she's doing Murphy. I think it's just his not that
- 25:15he's, you know, as a higher ceiling and Padula but just the
- 25:18fact that you played my consistent for multiple years,
- 25:20the fact that he was experienced a fifth-year senior and kind of
- 25:23just you know, the leadership aspect I think was also was also
- 25:26missing from this year's team. You look at Italy know it feels
- 25:30like this team is missing that kind of 3 and D type player yet
- 25:33on the wing so I can definitely see.
- 25:35We're having him on board especially you know, when you
- 25:38look at Maddox being out for an extended period of time, you can
- 25:42see there's a big hole there so I can definitely see where.
- 25:44That would be big. Let's let's pivot a little bit
- 25:48because we got we got one game to go with the regular season.
- 25:51Then we get in the ACC tournament.
- 25:54I don't think anyone's for seeing a big run.
- 25:58Like we saw last year out of this team but you know, what do
- 26:02you think this team can do in the ACC tournament?
- 26:05It's gonna be tough man. It's gonna be tough because
- 26:07you're most likely going to be an 11 seed UD matchup against
- 26:11the 14, which would be Notre Dame right now in the first
- 26:13round matchup, which, you know, I think Tech matched up very
- 26:15well against Notre Dame and the Irish have been pretty bad this
- 26:18season. That's fine.
- 26:19The problem is, if you want to make a Deep Run, you got to win
- 26:21five games in five nights and that's just I I cannot see that
- 26:25happening at all. So, I mean, maybe they say, I
- 26:27mean, there's a shocking. A 2011 Yukon did it, but they
- 26:29had Kemba Walker in their team so yeah, I don't know if it's
- 26:32the best comparison there. Yeah, it's just the thing is, I
- 26:36if you're if you're a glass-half-full type of person,
- 26:39there's really no one in this lie.
- 26:40That scares me just from, you know, what, we've seen from
- 26:43Tech, like they can be, anyone, they can lose to anyone.
- 26:46Like I don't look at any team, it's like, oh my God.
- 26:48Like if we if we play them, we're screwed.
- 26:50Like, no, this is not. It's not, it's not a greatly.
- 26:53I think you can beat any team in any given night.
- 26:55So from that perspective, I guess if you're an optimist he'd
- 26:57say yeah Technica deep. I'm good.
- 26:58So good, so good. All the other 14 teams, That's
- 27:02true and right now the the game with Florida State on Saturday
- 27:06afternoon does hold between the 11th and the 12th.
- 27:09So, you know, I think the 12 seeds going to play Georgia
- 27:11Tech, who we've already lost two once.
- 27:14But who do we play out of it. If, if tech were to win next
- 27:17Tuesday, and that's one reason we're not recording next
- 27:20Tuesday, folks is because when I looked at the schedule is like,
- 27:24will you bring Sheldon when we talk about this?
- 27:26Wait a second. No, we don't get a by this year
- 27:28because we can't be one of the best 19th in the ACC.
- 27:32But where is it looking like Shelton?
- 27:34Let's say we land the 11. We get.
- 27:36We play Notre Dame in the first. Who are we going to match up
- 27:39against going? You know, for worst?
- 27:41What's the path? Yeah, so you would match up
- 27:44against the six seed, which currently is, let's see.
- 27:48One, two, three other the NC State.
- 27:51So, I mean look like said, you know, they lost lost in sea
- 27:54State without a hunter, Couture a back in January, at home by a
- 27:56few points. Yeah.
- 27:57Again like I said, you can be anyone on any given night.
- 28:01You know, this is a topic that topic for another day but I
- 28:04just, I don't think they see he's good at all this year.
- 28:06I really don't. I mean, you got five dollars,
- 28:08five teams, maybe that'll make the tournament unc's not going
- 28:11to make it unless they beat Duke on Saturday.
- 28:14Yeah, it's just, it's not a great conference.
- 28:16So from that perspective, you know, anything can happen, it's,
- 28:20this is a year of turnover in the ACC, after what happened
- 28:22last year, when people felt like a couple teams got, shafted not
- 28:26getting put in the tournament and then you look and there's
- 28:28two in the final four for in the sweet 16.
- 28:32And in the bad part was what? Every case, every ACC team won
- 28:36the first round except Tech last year, they would seven and one
- 28:39in the first round or something like that, which was insane.
- 28:43But, you know, I think overall, if we kind of we're putting the
- 28:46bow on it, we're 30 minutes in now about where I thought we'd
- 28:49be but it seems like it's not just one aspect, it's not
- 28:55getting to the free-throw line enough.
- 28:56It's being slightly negative in offensive rebounds, it's missing
- 29:00players. It's you know to my chagrin.
- 29:03It's not layups. I was hoping you'd be like we're
- 29:05dead last and layups and I can be like, well, there's a reason
- 29:08we don't make short shots. Yeah.
- 29:09What? I mean, y'all feel That way
- 29:12fellas that it's not like one thing.
- 29:15It's just it's all these little things that basically it wasn't
- 29:20all five or six at every game. It was always three or four and
- 29:23we all thinking run. Yeah.
- 29:26I think some of its shown spoken to him but being stretched a
- 29:29little bit thinner than I think we anticipated, especially in
- 29:32the guard feel there. I think we felt not good about
- 29:38the that area of the team coming into the year in terms of depth,
- 29:42And then obviously that got significantly worse with the
- 29:44rice injury and then, you know, you had Max go down.
- 29:47So there's, there's just been some inconsistency with guys
- 29:51playing outside there. And, you know, we you combine
- 29:55that with a little bit of inconsistency here and there
- 29:58again, not getting to the free-throw line, not being able
- 30:00to rebound as much as you'd like.
- 30:02And I think just the combination of those things is really kind
- 30:04of kind of put us behind the eight ball and some games
- 30:06especially as we try to close some close ones out.
- 30:12Callie has you shake your head? I want to remain optimistic
- 30:18about the about the basketball team.
- 30:20But one word, man, effort, like, when I watch some games, I
- 30:26don't, you know, I love Mi kyung.
- 30:28I love what he what, he's brought to the team, but I feel
- 30:34like efforts are coaching thing and I just watch them play.
- 30:38Sometimes when you talk about those long rebounds, and we
- 30:41don't have anybody, Going for more, we don't have anybody you
- 30:45know, getting on the floor just you know, fighting for that
- 30:48extra possession. It's a effort thing.
- 30:51You know, you got to have the coaching style has to has to
- 30:56demand that and I feel like that had been there.
- 30:59So again, I like my gun. So I'm going to lay off of him
- 31:03tonight. I'm going to watch him before
- 31:07the ACC last year. He gets it.
- 31:14But what are your one or two points
- 31:27to say? The reason this team isn't 24
- 31:30and 324 and seven or 23 and you know twenty three and eight,
- 31:36make it into the NCAA tournament with these is because Just
- 31:40because of I think it's a cent to boil down Andrews and defense
- 31:44man. I mean, I'm not, you know, I'm
- 31:45not big on making excuses but you miss rice for a little bit.
- 31:48You miss Couture of a little bit, you miss Max for a little
- 31:50bit, you know, those those mrs. Add up and, you know, I don't
- 31:54think it's the sole reason. Certainly, not the tech is in
- 31:56the position. They're in their defense has
- 31:58absolutely falling off a cliff over the past, couple months
- 32:00there 100. And what is it 128 in Camp on
- 32:04defense? I mean, there's only 70.
- 32:06There's only like 70, major Converse.
- 32:07Seems like, that's just not, that's not good enough.
- 32:09So, Part of that could be, you know, shortage of depth.
- 32:12And the guys are getting tired. Mike has never been a great, you
- 32:15know, defensive coach. So, you know, you give them a
- 32:17little bit of a free pass there, but I just think it's a
- 32:20combination of, you know, the events being bad.
- 32:23The three-point shooting wasn't there.
- 32:24I think the duel is still learning to like, how to be a
- 32:27more polished point guard. Like I said, shot selection that
- 32:30question. Sometimes leadership, I question
- 32:32sometimes I look at a guy like the Doula I just don't see that
- 32:35sort of like floor General leadership all the time.
- 32:39Kind of what Tally was saying. And you know, Mike is very
- 32:41hands-off as a coach from my perception of him.
- 32:43Like he's not going to micromanage the offense, you
- 32:47have to do stats. He's just gonna go and like guys
- 32:49play and they got it. They got to make plays and I
- 32:51just don't think we've had enough of that to season.
- 32:52So the good news is we're not far off.
- 32:54We've lost a lot of close games. This year, we get healthy next
- 32:57year get some recruits in we can be rolling but this this this is
- 33:01just been sort of like a Murphy's Law type of year where
- 33:03everything kind of goes wrong and the only player not coming
- 33:07back. Next year is Justin A mutt,
- 33:10correct, correct. Assuming that the only player
- 33:13cannot come back. Cannot come back.
- 33:15Yes, cannot awesome. All right, well, let's flip
- 33:18over, let's talk real quick about the women's Hoops team,
- 33:21who will play tomorrow evening down in Greensboro for the ACC
- 33:26women's tournament and over the last couple weeks, you know,
- 33:28some really great moments. And I mean, I got to see the
- 33:31kitley dagger down at UNC, where they had not played a good game
- 33:37and she comes off that for some reason and I'm still Trying to
- 33:40figure this out, watching that defensive set kill.
- 33:43He's one of the probably the obviously the best player in the
- 33:46ACC will talk about the most one of the best players in the
- 33:48country. How do you come off of her?
- 33:52In that situation? It's just like because the girl
- 33:54like she's looking at it and she looks left.
- 33:57And Kinley comes around, makes explain.
- 34:00That didn't make any sense. I mean, I wasn't in the Huddle
- 34:04man looking for They look like they miss me a kitten on some
- 34:09sort of switch. I don't know why you wouldn't,
- 34:12you know have all eyes locked on here.
- 34:14It's just yeah, I don't know. I mean they went to the player
- 34:17who's coming to the three top of the three-point line them and
- 34:20kind of left her there open. I just they forgot off the best
- 34:23player in the ACC. Whatever's gonna happen when you
- 34:26have multiple multiple threats on the floor and you got Georgia
- 34:31there, you got kitley, I mean they've got a good solid team
- 34:35you know, they've got G is the best.
- 34:37Today, CeeCee of course she wasn't the one no war, but you
- 34:40got other all-acc players on that team as well.
- 34:43So many fucks you up, you know, you can't, you can't Zone in on
- 34:49one person, but it looked like a miscommunication, like Sheldon,
- 34:52say it. I mean, you kind of seen the
- 34:54players. Look at each other, like, what
- 34:55were you doing? What were you doing?
- 34:57So yeah, I think it was just a miscommunication on the switch.
- 35:01That's why. Yes, and Kelly went out there
- 35:03and she took over the all-time points record as well.
- 35:07Well, in that game. So that was a, it was a big game
- 35:10all around and then they turned around and close it out in that
- 35:13trap game against Georgia Tech. And that took them to the best
- 35:19finish for the Hokies women's basketball history.
- 35:21That's bunch of big moments kind of happened in the last week.
- 35:24For that women's day. I think this team is really
- 35:27peaking at the right time, you know, they had some I wouldn't
- 35:30say struggles but, Some ups and downs relative to their
- 35:33potential. I think we all knew what the
- 35:34potential of this team was coming to the season but they've
- 35:38really started clicking. You can tell Georgia a Moore's
- 35:40playing a lot better. She's Distributing a lot better.
- 35:42She's, you know, she she had a stretch where she couldn't miss
- 35:44from three kill. He's, you know, obviously done a
- 35:48great job. You've got Bo been support from
- 35:50Asia. Greg, Taylor Guymon who
- 35:52historically has been kind of like a sort of back-end guard is
- 35:57double some entries this year, but she's confident.
- 35:58She's done a pretty nice job in her role.
- 36:00So, I mean, Then click and you got, you got death you got to
- 36:03start down at the top. This team is really linked to
- 36:05their full potential. You have you until you already
- 36:08mentioned Georgia was first team kitley player of the year first
- 36:11team and then take a look at the grad transfer with Taylor's
- 36:14tool. If Shelton you said it a few
- 36:17weeks ago, tally you said it last week and it's clearly
- 36:19there, they got some really good players out of the portal that
- 36:22has really complemented the top two players.
- 36:26And, you know, right now I've I looked this up today on In.
- 36:33They are a number two, projected seed.
- 36:35We got away from us, are with you all the other day, the South
- 36:38Carolina bracket and we have been moved to the Indiana
- 36:42bracket. You said it a few weeks ago,
- 36:44Sheldon you thought this is an elite 18.
- 36:47If we stay in the, we stay at the Indiana bracket, dare you
- 36:52say, could they take the step and go?
- 36:55He definitely could. Now that being said India is
- 36:57very, very good. Like they are.
- 36:59If you, I mean, if you look at someone like the, you know, the
- 37:01Metrics like they're absolutely top three team in the country.
- 37:04I think Tech is more like, you know, top top eight top nine
- 37:06somewhere in there. But yeah, it getting out of the
- 37:09South Carolina bracket I will say is huge because they are by
- 37:12far. Like they are they are better
- 37:14than your if you're not a huge one, is about 12 in like they're
- 37:17better than Georgian football. Yes, sir.
- 37:19Like there. I mean it's 27 and know,
- 37:21whatever. They like every game they win by
- 37:2230 points. It's just, it's ridiculous.
- 37:24So you want to you deftly want to avoid them at all costs.
- 37:26As not see them until as late as possible in the tournament.
- 37:30Yep. And for the ladies again it is
- 37:32do you're going to be playing the winner of the Boston
- 37:34College. Miami game.
- 37:37That game I believe is actually might be wrapped up already.
- 37:41So we may know who the winner is to make an effort that while I'm
- 37:46at for Dean efforting efforting. But either way, it's been a
- 37:51great season. Clearly, they will.
- 37:53I don't, I think even a screw up tomorrow night.
- 37:56They're still going to be hosting a regional in
- 37:59Blacksburg. We discussed it.
- 38:02God, just don't let some seem shoots out of their minds from
- 38:06three-point range in that time frame, because that's the only
- 38:11thing that stopped at last year. So, has that game ended the
- 38:15Boston College. Miami game, Austin College.
- 38:17Miami. That's still going on about five
- 38:19minutes left. Yep.
- 38:20Miami's up 71-62. Okay, well, we'll get some
- 38:26chalk. Yeah, it looks like Miami
- 38:29should, hold on. But so again, that's going to be
- 38:31tomorrow night on the Acca Network 8:00, I'll definitely
- 38:36try to catch it. Yeah, you know, it's bedtime
- 38:38here. Tyler knows.

- 39:40He'll be back in just a moment. But last Tuesday, afternoon
- 39:45myself mr. Siegel and Sally got the
- 39:49shoot-down. Got the sit down about 30
- 39:53minutes with Virginia Tech wide. Receiver coach fontelle Minds,
- 39:58it was awesome. He Also he celebrated a birthday
- 40:01coach, happy birthday. Again this week Prime, let's
- 40:04press the tape and let's show the boundary Corner listeners
- 40:08what coach mines had a say about.
- 40:09Some of the things we asked them, pay attention, boundary
- 40:12Corner podcast listeners. Tonight we have a very special
- 40:17interview here with Jonathan. Talley here with Brian siglo
- 40:21boys, we got in the green room right now.
- 40:24Coach fontelle Minds, let's go ahead.
- 40:26Let's get him in here because we've got some questions to ask
- 40:29this man. An Brothers was happening as
- 40:32everybody doing because I'm wonderful man.
- 40:36Wonderful enjoying myself? We are doing great here.
- 40:40Me and Brian in the RV. 8, a lie down in Alabama today, and man,
- 40:44we got some questions to ask. You, how's everything doing?
- 40:48Y'all been good, busy busy. We spend the weekend in
- 40:53Charlotte for a coaches Clinic. I had the family come up with
- 40:56me, my wife and my son and we enjoy Charlotte for a couple
- 40:59days. Days and we'll be in Richmond.
- 41:01This weekend will be a northern Virginia's weekend talking some
- 41:04ball man you know building those relationships been around some
- 41:07High School coaches. So super excited and I love the
- 41:11offseason and shoot you know Spring ball is right around the
- 41:13corner. It is man.
- 41:17Yeah, so you're heading to the stomping grounds as weekend.
- 41:19Ransom for baby. There we go.
- 41:22There we go. All right, let's talk about this
- 41:24first. You've had a bunch of stopped.
- 41:26Since you started your coaching career at your alma mater.
- 41:29Hermitage high school with here in the r-va.
- 41:31You also happen to be a notable football, alumnus of the
- 41:35University of Virginia. Yeah, what did you think?
- 41:38When you got the call that the Hokies wanted you to come on
- 41:40board as wide receivers coach? Man, it was a just the way it
- 41:45all kind of happened. Man was kind of surreal to be
- 41:47honest with you. I had some connections here on
- 41:50this staff will Coach Bowen just from working at Old Dominion and
- 41:55I'm a coach pry on a Sunday at the Coaches convention.
- 41:59No, I'm sorry. Madam on a Monday night at the
- 42:01Coaches convention, him and James Franklin were together and
- 42:05we got a chance to exchange conversation and he asked me,
- 42:08would I be interested in interviewing for the job that
- 42:10next day did? Have any my material and have a
- 42:15superfood. You know, it was it was probably
- 42:18about eight nine o'clock that night and you know, so me I just
- 42:21kind of get my stuff together and start preparing myself and
- 42:24it was it was awesome though man.
- 42:26Just really grown up in Richmond.
- 42:30The two Flagship schools. Have always been right?
- 42:32Virginia Virginia Tech it was it was either you went to Virginia.
- 42:35You went to Virginia Tech store for me.
- 42:39It hit home because you know, my best friend graduated from,
- 42:42Virginia Tech Duane. Brown and we were recruited
- 42:44together. We grew up together.
- 42:46He was my wedding to one of my closest friends and he was the
- 42:50first one I called and I would really just curious and his
- 42:53reaction. And you talk about somebody
- 42:56excited, man. It was a, it was a great moment
- 42:59and it was, it was a little different, you know, I'll be the
- 43:02first to tell you was a little different but it's one of those
- 43:04things where professionally a no-brainer.
- 43:07Yeah, it's great to hear Duane because you had a lot of, guys,
- 43:10you played with you at hermit is you went to Tech in went to UVA
- 43:14back in the early 2000s, but I'm going to ask this, it's just a
- 43:17little fun. How much grief did you catch
- 43:19from your former UVA teammates? I mean, when they when they saw
- 43:23it on Twitter, like waving the cartels, going to take the
- 43:26coach, you know what, not too bad, it was probably more.
- 43:30So some Twitter people kind of kind of came at me so weird, it
- 43:36was on fire in Charlottesville but I have a lot of The
- 43:43teammates and the coaching Circle and they kind of
- 43:45understand the nature of this business and the opportunity to
- 43:48have for professional advancement and you know, an
- 43:52opportunity to take take care of my family and provide for my son
- 43:55and know that was number one thing for me and then really an
- 43:58opportunity to stay in the Commonwealth.
- 43:59I mean, you talk about Virginia and you know what this place
- 44:03means to me with their state means to me and you know, it's
- 44:06the world man. So it was something I couldn't
- 44:08pass up. You have so coach, we know that,
- 44:12you know, over A 13-year career, you've had, you know, some
- 44:15stocks all around a minute Mid-Atlantic.
- 44:19What is East Carolina? J, mu Richmond, Old Dominion.
- 44:23We probably go on and on, but what you, what?
- 44:27You been at Tech now, you know, how has that helped you jump?
- 44:31Right? Into your day-to-day job and,
- 44:33you know recruiting, Because we know like Virginia recruiting
- 44:36us. Turn up a little bit.
- 44:38Yeah, it for me. It was a seamless transition.
- 44:41You talk about James? Addison talk about University of
- 44:45Richmond, you talk about East Carolina and old to mean, I was
- 44:50responsible for recruiting the Richmond area.
- 44:53I was responsible for recruiting the Virginia Beach, 757 area.
- 44:57So I've known all those coaches for the past 15 years.
- 45:02I've known some of those coaches since I was a player you know
- 45:05you walk into those schools and some of those guys have an
- 45:08opportunity, remember coaching against me or I walk into her.
- 45:11Meat is high school and And I'm having conversations with a
- 45:14guys, my former teammate. So, for me mad, it made all the
- 45:19sense in the world. I was already recruited a lot of
- 45:21those guys. Some, I couldn't get Now.
- 45:24Give me an opportunity to really give them an opportunity to come
- 45:27play for me, you know, to Chi heat comes to mind.
- 45:31I probably have been working this kid for two years Braylon
- 45:34Johnson. I probably been talking this guy
- 45:36for the last two years. Cam Fleming I played AAU
- 45:40basketball with a woman's uncle. You know, just those connections
- 45:45give kids a sense of Peace, the kids, the parents.
- 45:49So it was good man it's been awesome for me and I absolutely
- 45:53love hearing that number. I'm going to Pivot a little bit
- 45:55away from that because Callie mentioned the day-to-day work
- 45:59and right now y'all are right. Smack dab in the middle of
- 46:01winter workouts and we've seen you post Tucker.
- 46:04Holloway Benji Gosnell, Jalen Lane stepping up.
- 46:10But what is the primary focus for you?
- 46:13You during this time period for evaluating your guys during
- 46:16those workouts and especially with bringing three new guys,
- 46:19into the fold competition, mental toughness details.
- 46:24Those are the top three for me and then dependability, I mean
- 46:28your eyes and guys, to wake up at 5:00 in the morning to be
- 46:32dressed and ready in the, on the field at 6:00 6:00 ready to work
- 46:36for an hour, and then go to class, you know, not show up on
- 46:40any list, go to weights. So it's giving me Opportunity.
- 46:43If I can't count on you outside of football, the guys are being
- 46:46late to class or missing class is no way in the world.
- 46:49I'm going to be able to count on your own third mate, the run the
- 46:52right route. And it's also given the
- 46:54transfers an opportunity to really engulf themselves.
- 46:58And our environment right now, culture, and to really establish
- 47:02themselves or who they are and learn to play books on the
- 47:04Playbook, learn their teammates. So this to me is really the most
- 47:08important time for our team. But competitions, you know, that
- 47:12that's the Then so long at the top without it without a
- 47:15question. Definitely.
- 47:17So, I'm glad you mentioned mentioned transfers that coach
- 47:21because, you know, us as fans, man, we look at things that we
- 47:24see things totally different light than you guys do, but
- 47:29coming off of a 3 and 8 season. What does coach Minds do?
- 47:33He goes into the portal? He pulls out three top, 25
- 47:37transfers to flip that room. Can you talk to us a little bit
- 47:42about How you were able to, you know, identify what you were
- 47:46looking for and how you went into recruiting that room, which
- 47:49such a quick turnaround after the season going into spring.
- 47:52Yeah. The first thing that I wanted
- 47:57while targeting some transfers and even high school kids was, I
- 48:00wanted guys that will come in right away day one and compete
- 48:05the start. I don't want to get anybody to
- 48:08be a deaf guy. I didn't want to recruit anybody
- 48:11to be a special teams guy. I wanted to bring in guys to
- 48:14raise the level of competition in that room because that's when
- 48:18bring the best out of all of us myself, the returning guys and
- 48:22it says no ego in this like that, that comes the business
- 48:27part of this and they are all different, right?
- 48:29They all have a different unique, skillset.
- 48:31I've known are leave since I leave was 67 years old.
- 48:35I have a great relationship with him.
- 48:37I remember him coming to camps that we had back in Richmond.
- 48:41I went to school with his brother.
- 48:43They're obviously I was at Old Dominion with them for a year
- 48:47and you talk about a guy that's proven, I mean all three of
- 48:49their proven, they played a lot of football, it had a lot of
- 48:52production right? That's hard to pass up.
- 48:56Two of them are Virginia guys right from for my printout area
- 49:00Richmond and the 757 you talk about Daquan Feldon immediately.
- 49:06He brings a level of attitude mindset and mentality.
- 49:11The time, baby. Like, you know, you know what
- 49:14time it is? It like he's different like he
- 49:17doesn't Flinch and he talked about Jaden Lane who's who's my
- 49:23Silent Assassin? He just comes to work every
- 49:25single day. He competes his butt off and
- 49:28he's a punt, returner, he's a kick returner, he plays in a
- 49:31slide, he plays on the outside. So immediately, you know,
- 49:35everyone changes the Dynamics of that room changed, you don't
- 49:38have to depend on the true freshman.
- 49:40A guy that might have to be ready to play, right?
- 49:43Now you can kind of give to give guys time to develop so I'm
- 49:47excited man, we were able to get those and I just me man, just a
- 49:50group effort, code phone, you know, code Rudolph coach Glenn,
- 49:54like all those guys played a big part in that, you know, but the
- 49:56relationship piece and I'm relationship built, man,
- 49:59relationship piece. It meant a lot, man.
- 50:02I had an opportunity to see those guys, you know, Quantum on
- 50:05his own turf. I recruited Jalen Lane.
- 50:07When I was at East Carolina, you know.
- 50:09So I've known him. You talk about coachable
- 50:12Michaela. And as a high school coach, I
- 50:14mean the kid comes in right away, picks up the offense, he
- 50:17knows what he's doing. And, you know, he just works
- 50:20every single day so that's kind of what it is for that.
- 50:23Now, that was my thought process, seems like from a skill
- 50:26set point of view. They have a lot of complementary
- 50:28skills in that, they each kind of do different things really
- 50:31well. And I think that's yeah.
- 50:33Going to be great to build on for the season, for sure.
- 50:36But let me ask this, we're talking offseason.
- 50:38You got spring practice starting here in a few weeks in Year One.
- 50:43The big Focus for the team was winning every rep, that
- 50:46competition, right? And you've already spoken on
- 50:49that a little bit. Well, that hasn't changed for
- 50:51year to what is one area of focus that you guys have kind of
- 50:55circled for the spring that may not have been there.
- 50:58Last year may have been a lower priority last year.
- 51:01I know it was there and it's an has been a priority but you can
- 51:06never focus enough on the details if the routes for yards
- 51:11running for yards, if it's six steps.
- 51:13Running six steps. If you supposed to convert
- 51:15versus coverage, when needs to convert, we need our receivers
- 51:19to be where they're supposed to be at, right?
- 51:20Make the plays. Make the routine plays, I will
- 51:23sent make the layups right got an access road to the field and
- 51:27the quarterback throws it to you on time.
- 51:30Make the layup, right? That's that's where I was on
- 51:32there for us. So, like I'm putting the
- 51:34pressure on those guys for Perfection, right?
- 51:39I'm asking for protection, understanding and Owen right?
- 51:44What I'm going to get is a product of competition and guys
- 51:48that were better than we were this last spring.
- 51:51That's the only goal, right? The put guys on that field.
- 51:54That's going to be better than we were last year and that's no,
- 51:57not to anybody that played last year, but if I'm not, recruiting
- 52:01guys are recruiting Talent that's going to come in and play
- 52:03it, and I'm not doing my job. Then I love hearing that that
- 52:07you talk about the details and like make the layups because
- 52:11there's so many times in this game.
- 52:12Where there's a layup. Play you make that?
- 52:15Yeah, it's only five yards now, it's second and five.
- 52:18No doubt, makes everything easier.
- 52:19It makes everything easier, right, but we talk about it
- 52:22every week, right? Curtis.
- 52:25If you making the layups in football, then eventually that
- 52:30teams going to guard the layups harder in the, the harder stuff
- 52:33is going to become easier because they focus on the easy
- 52:35stuff. All right, let me put this pivot
- 52:38to this and not only for you to kind of Staff in general.
- 52:42What? Some of the lessons learned from
- 52:44year. One.
- 52:45And how are y'all approaching that going into year two?
- 52:48When you get the opportunity to learn your personnel, along your
- 52:52players, to be honest with you, like I didn't really get a great
- 52:57feel for who they were until week four to five.
- 53:00I mean yes. We're with them all off season
- 53:03in the winter. Yes, we were them in the spring.
- 53:06Reward him in the summer, but you don't really know, truly
- 53:09know him into those bullets. Start flying and Lane stadium in
- 53:12front. The $65 heavy.
- 53:14Like that's when you get a good vibe for, I, this is who this
- 53:17kid is, right? This is our strength.
- 53:20This is our weakness. Let's play this, right?
- 53:22This this formation or this concept has been successful or
- 53:27he runs this route better versus this coverage.
- 53:30So it gave us an opportunity to get a good feel for a guys and,
- 53:34you know, try to gain some momentum down the stretch.
- 53:36And, you know, we were competitive in a lot of games.
- 53:38I think we lost four games by 11 points, man.
- 53:41So you just talked about the Since that are you can make it
- 53:46could be tremendous. Yep, definitely coach.
- 53:49When you talk about the loser. Doesn't you know like you said
- 53:52losing a couple of games by a couple of points.
- 53:55You know that as fans it's heartbreaking, you know, we you
- 53:58know we get beat up a little bit but not as much.
- 54:01Yeah, I told off a little bit not as much as you know probably
- 54:03you guys do but learning how to win.
- 54:06Definitely was a theme in that in that year won both you know
- 54:11for the staff and the players Hers.
- 54:13Do you feel like, you know, everything started to come
- 54:17together? All those elements came
- 54:19together? You know, at the end of the
- 54:21season, that that Liberty game, I do feel like that.
- 54:24I feel like we hit our stride. I feel like the kids were bought
- 54:28in. They were born into the
- 54:29gameplay, never bought into what we wanted to do and it was never
- 54:33a moment where we showed up on a Sunday and those guys won't
- 54:36ready to work. So I give a lot of credit to
- 54:38them and they didn't fold, there was no issues in the locker
- 54:41room. Talk about culture and you talk
- 54:44about something to build off of like that's what we're going to
- 54:46build off. What we had, we were able to run
- 54:49the ball to win the game and to seal the game and the finish the
- 54:53game guys made plays down the stretch right that's maturity
- 54:56that's world and that's a lot for us to build on and I'm going
- 54:59to roll over some really talented Liberty thing,
- 55:01definitely, we had talked about that a lot when we were looking
- 55:04at it and that kind of that winning time sequence, it felt
- 55:07like offense defense, special teams.
- 55:10They kind of made the plays that you need to make the close that
- 55:13thing out where is few games earlier in the year.
- 55:15You know, one element was not there in the closeout, maybe
- 55:19another here and there, and another game, but in that game,
- 55:21it felt like all the pieces kind of came together for you lady
- 55:25complete gangaajal do right, man?
- 55:26It takes all three phases and I'll tell you, for me, on that
- 55:29game. It was the last series where
- 55:32offense or defense, stopped them offense, drove the field,
- 55:35scored. They come back defense.
- 55:38Stops them again. And then you guys on offense,
- 55:40your guys blocking on the outside.
- 55:41Making catches, it's like, They're not getting this ball
- 55:44back. Yeah, ends right here, know that
- 55:46and, you know, knelt it down, it's like over.
- 55:48And as a fan, it made us feel great.
- 55:51Because you, like tally said, we saw it.
- 55:53It was like where that first down, we hadn't got that a
- 55:57couple games and it breaks our heart, we know it hurts you all
- 56:00but it's like we got the first down.
- 56:02Yeah we kept pushing it, love it but I know you got some.
- 56:04You want to ask him? Yeah I'm let's talk a little bit
- 56:06about recruiting Focus. We know in year one the big
- 56:10Mantra was repairing those Oops, in the state of Virginia, in the
- 56:14footprint, how did the relationships and Rapport that
- 56:18you had from your previous stops?
- 56:20Help you on that front? Yes, trust man is trust, is guys
- 56:26understand who I am, as a person who I am as a coach believing
- 56:30in. You know, my coaching philosophy
- 56:32and also believe in encode prize philosophy.
- 56:34And I think a lot of guys initially when they get hired
- 56:39but see a lot of things but they won't do and Coach Pride, you
- 56:42know, he stood. That he stood on the table with
- 56:44that, we're going to recruit this state.
- 56:46He said it, he meant it and we did and we found ways to foster
- 56:51those relationships. Whether it was, you know, these
- 56:53clinics that we're going to do getting on these guys Turf guard
- 56:58down, spending time with them, talking about eating, good food
- 57:01and just relaxing. And I think that means a lot to
- 57:04those guys and, you know, taking that opportunity to do that and
- 57:07recruit those schools, right? You talk about a spool like
- 57:11Holly Springs, they're going I have prospects every single
- 57:14year. You talk about Herman is you
- 57:16talk about you. Go to guys in Northern Virginia
- 57:18freedom and there's all these talented talented prospects in
- 57:23this state, right? That could be overlooked because
- 57:27it may look great in another state par and Texas and Florida
- 57:30and you can go get. And I'm not saying you can't go
- 57:33get guys from those places, right?
- 57:35But if you start, you start in the state right now.
- 57:38I guarantee you you can find guy's talented enough and
- 57:42willing Enough to win you a lot of games when it's all said and
- 57:45done and then you build on those relationships.
- 57:47So when that four and five-star Prospect comes out, right, he's
- 57:51got a teammate already in Blacksburg, right?
- 57:53He's already seen me a couple times in the school.
- 57:55The coach already knows what he's going to get from us.
- 57:58And that's really what it's about, man.
- 58:00It's been, it's being honest is being us as being genuine and
- 58:04giving those guys an opportunity to trust us.
- 58:06And that's all that coach prize Direction, man.
- 58:08What you see is what you get by is no fluff is no recruiting
- 58:12pitch. Each not us out here selling
- 58:14dreams as out here, just being rude.
- 58:18And that's, I mean, that's as a fan, that's refreshing, man.
- 58:22I guess we, we definitely are welcoming that, you know, even
- 58:27feeling that I'm always down here in Alabama and I'm feeling
- 58:29it, I'm, I'm hopping up and down.
- 58:32You know what I'm saying? To see you guys out there, but
- 58:35from what I'm hearing now, you can tell me if I'm wrong.
- 58:39They're telling me. When you come to Virginia, you
- 58:41got to check in with Coach minds.
- 58:46They said that he is running. Thanks Dad.
- 58:48Yeah. But you know, kind of the
- 58:50question that I have for you is people know.
- 58:53You are Virginia guy, they know you, you know, you went to UVA,
- 58:57you've been around for a while. How much did the staff lean on
- 59:01you? Lean on your relationships?
- 59:03Did you have any guys that kind of came to me?
- 59:05And was like, hey coach, you know, I'm going to I'm going to
- 59:09Hermitage today. What?
- 59:10We'll what do I need to? Is there certain person?
- 59:12I need to see, you know if you have anybody to lean on you,
- 59:15absolutely man in each. Pocket of the state is a little
- 59:19bit different, right? Recruiting Richmond is
- 59:22completely different in recruiting 757, right?
- 59:25You may have to go to three people in the 757 before you
- 59:27actually get to the kid, but that's just kind of how it is.
- 59:31And that's the name of the business man.
- 59:33But like, the, the the relationships they did Lean on
- 59:36Me, you know, we have some guys as off the field as from
- 59:40Virginia, but when you just talked about, hey man I'm going
- 59:43to this school. Here's what you need to talk to
- 59:45or I'm going to this area here. So I need to talk to.
- 59:48Here's what you need to stay, right?
- 59:50These are the six holes you need to hit this day.
- 59:52All right, or taking another notch.
- 59:55You're watching the highlight tape.
- 59:56This is the brand of football that these guys play, right?
- 1:00:00This is how coachable these guys have historically been.
- 1:00:05You just look at our recruiting class why?
- 1:00:07I think we had guy that total class it was 19 state
- 1:00:11championships right? In that one class you talk about
- 1:00:15recruiting winners guys that have been well.
- 1:00:17Coach guys, that come here and it's going to piss them off to
- 1:00:20lose, right? And that's the kind of attitude
- 1:00:23that we need while of that, right there.
- 1:00:25That's, that's, that's the mentality, man.
- 1:00:27You talk about the state championships, the guys you're
- 1:00:30bringing in their winners and like you said, they don't want
- 1:00:33to lose. So I'm sure you've got some of
- 1:00:35them already joining you on campus that have already brought
- 1:00:38that to the table during The Hunger Games and seeing some of
- 1:00:41the workouts where it's like, I'm not losing this rep.
- 1:00:43No, don't lose these reps. I've won all these reps since
- 1:00:46I've been a freshman in high school.
- 1:00:49Let me put just a little bit of fun here.
- 1:00:51So if the Hokey tailgate comes back to the RV, a this year,
- 1:00:56comes to Hardy would part just about five minutes from my house
- 1:01:00here. It's not until Minds can find
- 1:01:02out my eyes. Make an appearance there, hold
- 1:01:04on. What's the date?
- 1:01:06Well, last year was in July, that's possible.
- 1:01:09Okay. All right, if you want and I'll
- 1:01:14do my best. We understand, but if we see
- 1:01:23you, we are coming up and we are going to talk with you a little
- 1:01:25bit more than a man. Let's do it, man.
- 1:01:28You got one more form, right? Yep.
- 1:01:30So fun tell, you know, we know man, we know you got a birthday
- 1:01:33coming up. You might try to hide it from
- 1:01:35everybody else, but I do we know.
- 1:01:38We know when the birthday is for everybody, who don't know, we
- 1:01:41got February 26th, I'm not gonna call his age out, I'm gonna let
- 1:01:45him do that. But, you know, the question I
- 1:01:50have for you, is as a coach, what would be the best gift?
- 1:01:54You can get on your birthday? From a coaching perspective for
- 1:01:59from a coaching perspective, having a follower weekend,
- 1:02:24There we go. I appreciate you taking the time
- 1:02:31to join us and talk with us today and yes, if y'all are
- 1:02:34wondering my head turn to the right.
- 1:02:36My six-year-old, son opened the door and said, Daddy can you
- 1:02:38come do this for me? I'm like, all right now,
- 1:02:58I appreciate you guys. Absolutely appreciate the
- 1:03:00support. Anytime anything you need from
- 1:03:05getting it done. We appreciate you.
- 1:03:08Thanks. And that was coach fontelle.
- 1:03:11Mine's a joined us last Tuesday. First of all, Brian tally.
- 1:03:15It was a blast to talk to that man.
- 1:03:17In general, it just felt he was relaxed.
- 1:03:19It was natural. I feel like Brian if he does
- 1:03:23make it too hard he would we will probably be 20 30 minutes
- 1:03:26with him on the patio out there, drinking drinking either and
- 1:03:34shooting the breeze with him. I mean, you gotta love that
- 1:03:37about him in general. Yeah, you do.
- 1:03:39If we see, you know how he has success on the trail very
- 1:03:43relaxed, somebody definitely want to have a conversation with
- 1:03:47just kind of sit down and shoot the breeze.
- 1:03:50So I mean that aspect you can definitely see why he's a he's a
- 1:03:53successful successful man and just successful coach.
- 1:03:56Yeah he can't Ally p-town. He Town yeah.
- 1:03:59Even right away. Baby already.
- 1:04:04So let me ask you this guy's and y'all chime in whoever wants to
- 1:04:07come in first. How do y'all His how, what is
- 1:04:12his impact? Mental net wide receiver room.
- 1:04:16I'll take a lead on this one. I mean, I'm looking at it.
- 1:04:20The thing that we see obviously is, you know, you get a big
- 1:04:25impact from a recruiting standpoint.
- 1:04:28Notch it up a little bit on the trail in the state of Virginia,
- 1:04:31especially in Richmond area. But you're also seeing bringing
- 1:04:35in three top 20, top of the league transfer portal players
- 1:04:41from the wide receivers perspective, to kind of bolster
- 1:04:43that room. But the The thing that kind of
- 1:04:46impressed me, and this is actually something that came out
- 1:04:50during the pride of you on text sideline talking about Christian
- 1:04:56moss and kind of how he's kind of redoubled his efforts in
- 1:05:02trying to get playing time and really kind of digging in to be
- 1:05:08a contributor in that wide receiver room.
- 1:05:09Because I think a lot of folks saw him is like a potential
- 1:05:12transfer portal player after The way the season wrapped up and
- 1:05:17you know, with the guys that we brought in, but now he's, it
- 1:05:20sounds like he's kind of changed the culture in that room in
- 1:05:22terms of guys, competing for spots competing for time,
- 1:05:26competing for rep. So that's I think that's that.
- 1:05:28That's a big impact as well. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:05:32I'm you know I listen to him when he was talking about the he
- 1:05:37would've wanted to bring people in to compete right away.
- 1:05:41He didn't want to bring depth guys in so people who are
- 1:05:44already there. If the coach is telling us that,
- 1:05:47I'm sure he's telling them that. So, sometimes football players,
- 1:05:51you getting your feelings. I'm bringing people in here to
- 1:05:53compete with playing town and prior kind of, you know, came
- 1:05:57out and said, you know, we didn't know what we were going
- 1:05:59to get out of Out of Christian, he's been kind of pretty much
- 1:06:02underwhelming but he came in the office and said, hey, this is
- 1:06:06what I want to do and it's what he's been living up to.
- 1:06:09So I think that that mindset, that that fontelle has brought
- 1:06:13to that room is just been a hard nose, you know, let's grind.
- 1:06:19So I'm excited to see what happens with that.
- 1:06:23With that wide receiver room. I think it'll be one of our
- 1:06:25deepest and most talented room positions this So he put on a
- 1:06:31clinic in had a flipper room in one offseason.
- 1:06:34Yeah, we did it. Yeah, he did impressively.
- 1:06:39Well, that's you shall know. I mean, have you had any?
- 1:06:40I don't know if you've had any interactions with Coach mine
- 1:06:42since you've been up there. You didn't get to join us on the
- 1:06:44interview or anything. No, I mean, you know, I've kind
- 1:06:48of seen him at PK sometimes. That's my only actions.
- 1:06:52But even then, he's like, I mean, he's the life of the party
- 1:06:54man. He's always lived over there.
- 1:06:55Run talking everyone. He's just like, sometimes you
- 1:06:58can you see a guy? You see a cauchy He just tell
- 1:07:00like he's like he gets it. Like, he's a good, he's a good
- 1:07:03recruiter, he's a good relationships guy.
- 1:07:05He relates well to a lot of different players and I think
- 1:07:07was pretty impressive that he got a lead Jennings to come here
- 1:07:10on one year of Eligibility. I mean, it's just like you know,
- 1:07:14it wasn't a great offense. Last year, he got some
- 1:07:15quarterback questions, but like he I mean the fact he convinced
- 1:07:18a guy like that to come here. Like that speaks volumes to his
- 1:07:20recruiting abilities at the about.
- 1:07:22I love you saying that apks. He's the life of the party first
- 1:07:25of all he's also like what? 65 yes it is a huge guy so
- 1:07:30Really. It's just like, I'm assuming
- 1:07:33it's a magnetic effect with him, like a lot of our guys, and he's
- 1:07:38known to pull the best out of all his guys Robbie.
- 1:07:40Obviously Rob, he's our coach friend who has some connections
- 1:07:43down at ECU where coach - coach and I love the key point there
- 1:07:47at the end we were talking about did guys come to you on this
- 1:07:51staff when they visited schools and he was like yeah and I was
- 1:07:54making sure this is who you talk to.
- 1:07:56This is this is who you go to because that is so much
- 1:07:59important. And especially with the new
- 1:08:01staff or new people coming on, in which we're going to talk
- 1:08:03about it in about three or four minutes here.
- 1:08:06We're going to have new coaches coming on in the near future.
- 1:08:09And to have somebody like fine tale mines, who especially in
- 1:08:12the state of Virginia. You walk into a high school, he
- 1:08:15can tell you who to talk to where to go, what to do.
- 1:08:18What they do that's huge because sometimes you don't have that
- 1:08:22and when you don't have that Talent, you're in the car,
- 1:08:24you're in the salesman business. And you know, about those
- 1:08:27relationship about knowing, this is how you talk to this guy.
- 1:08:30This is where you go here in to have him like that.
- 1:08:33It's almost heaven. Like and I think he is the
- 1:08:35recruiting to the recruiting office recruiting coordinator
- 1:08:39offensive, recruiting coordinator.
- 1:08:40So then that makes sense from what everything's he's telling
- 1:08:44us there or so. Now, He said it himself and when
- 1:08:51we were coming up you know if you were in a state of Virginia
- 1:08:55you went to want us to schools and you go look back through the
- 1:08:58history of time you know he was playing at Hermitage and you
- 1:09:02know 08 or excuse me in the early 2000s with Dwayne and we
- 1:09:07saw Tweety come through then we said guys go to UVA.
- 1:09:12What do y'all feel about him selling Virginia recruits?
- 1:09:16Our program, even though he's a UVA guy, he's going to take it.
- 1:09:25Anybody I'll take it, why not? So yeah let's let's talk about
- 1:09:30that before. So from a Virginia recruiting
- 1:09:32perspective he's the guy that selling a vision of when not
- 1:09:39only Virginia Tech was one of the top, ten fifteen programs in
- 1:09:43the country but from when the UVA Virginia Tech, rivalry was
- 1:09:49still a rivalry and not a rivalry of mid, but a rivalry of
- 1:09:54top. Three and four teams in their
- 1:09:56conference, top one, and two teams in their conference.
- 1:10:00He remembers those days. So, he's selling what, what can
- 1:10:04be, what was and what can be again?
- 1:10:07So I think that that's big because he can set kind of say,
- 1:10:10hey yeah, I did I kept my talents in the state, I went to
- 1:10:14University of Virginia. You know, I did these things
- 1:10:17that help build me and build my brand and be able to do the
- 1:10:20things that I wanted to do. So it's Yeah, I'd say he's just
- 1:10:25as good as having an alumni on the staff and that regard
- 1:10:30because he is still selling that same type of vision of guys that
- 1:10:34have been able to do it at Virginia Tech or do it at UVA.
- 1:10:37They've been able to go to their in-state stool and show out.
- 1:10:41Yeah, you know, of course I'm from from Bama.
- 1:10:44So we'll little bit different here.
- 1:10:46Like when you see somebody, I don't know, Alabama is just
- 1:10:50different when we see Julio Jones and League, it's not like
- 1:10:55Alabama, born and bred like we don't give a fuck.
- 1:10:57You know what I'm saying? Like what we'd like, but
- 1:11:00Virginia people are so prideful about their state, you know.
- 1:11:04It's like I seen so many people that was like, you know, Mac
- 1:11:08McClung won the dunk contest and it was like everybody was
- 1:11:12climbing in from Virginia. You know what I'm saying it is,
- 1:11:16it didn't matter. I don't even know where he's
- 1:11:19from, but everybody was claiming Gate City.
- 1:11:22Yes. City Jersey and last 90 days,
- 1:11:27I've seen Alabama be like that gung-ho about some, but fucking
- 1:11:31Ruben Studdard in the that's the only time I ever been like we're
- 1:11:43proud of Alabama. But Virginia people, when they
- 1:11:45talk about like music, you talk about clips and Chris Brown and
- 1:11:50you see go on and so yeah. So on so forth and then you Do
- 1:11:54you go into Allen Iverson? And Vic like Virginia people are
- 1:12:00very prideful, so I don't think that it's I don't think that
- 1:12:03it's such a like crazy thing to be like, man.
- 1:12:06I don't care where you going to be successful.
- 1:12:08I just want you to put on for the state so I think he's got
- 1:12:14that kind of Mantra when he's moving forward.
- 1:12:16Like I know you via ain't shit. But I'm trying to make Virginia
- 1:12:20Tech this shit. So come on over here and let's
- 1:12:22get it done. And see the point that he's
- 1:12:25making point there in general, anything you want.
- 1:12:27I'll let you do this is because the best both programs have ever
- 1:12:31been is when everybody top 20 in state were all going to those
- 1:12:38schools. Hmm.
- 1:12:39And that roughly is from 1993 to 2003.
- 1:12:44The years UVA, beat FSU years. We went to the national title
- 1:12:48game Tiki Ronde. You start going through those
- 1:12:51that 10-year stretch. Those were legitimately Tech was
- 1:12:54a top 10 team. Virginia was a top 20 team,
- 1:12:56those years go back and look through the annals of history
- 1:12:59and it tells you during that tenure stretching to White
- 1:13:02victim, on this program has said it.
- 1:13:04When both schools are good, the state's better.
- 1:13:08I agree with that. I want to make a real point
- 1:13:09right here. Not that one but this one, The
- 1:13:14one thing he said about that conference was, yeah, I'm at the
- 1:13:17AFC a conference and all of a sudden Brent Pride wants to
- 1:13:19interview to me to be a next head coach.
- 1:13:22I'm, I don't know. He was like, I don't have my
- 1:13:24papers, I don't have my suit. Oh shit, what am I supposed to
- 1:13:28do? And clearly, again, I think that
- 1:13:31personality just knocked it out of the ballpark.
- 1:13:35Um, yeah, I mean, if you got a personality like that it doesn't
- 1:13:40matter, the scenario that the interview takes place, it's all
- 1:13:43about. You know, how you can present
- 1:13:46your vision for a room and what you can do on the trail both
- 1:13:52individually and to kind of raise the bar across the board
- 1:13:55for the rest of the staff. And he's shown that that he has
- 1:13:58the aptitude to do that pretty good.
- 1:14:00So it's the culture. Yep, they're selling the culture
- 1:14:04Shield, again you living down there, you probably hear and see
- 1:14:07him more about it than ever and this is a three and eight
- 1:14:10football team that, you know, the worst we've seen in 30
- 1:14:13years. And like no tally, no set it
- 1:14:17straight up. You pull three top 25 guys, out
- 1:14:20of the portal, What's the culture, you know, what are you
- 1:14:23hearing from? When our workouts being a little
- 1:14:25closer down there? And I know we know you have a
- 1:14:27job and we know you're doing things but when you get to go
- 1:14:30into PK's and you get to go around the folks what is that
- 1:14:34culture being like you that he's mentioning in these interviews?
- 1:14:39I think the guys have done a really good job of sticking
- 1:14:42together despite adversity like We look like a last year.
- 1:14:45Like obviously, it's the worst Tech Team, pretty much ever and
- 1:14:49we didn't have any sort of, you know, locker room, you know,
- 1:14:52brouhaha as like, it wasn't like a bunch of infighting wasn't
- 1:14:55guys pointing fingers. Which was, you know, during the
- 1:14:57one day or like a literally, a regular occurrence even when we
- 1:15:00go, turkey bacon articles. Oh yeah.
- 1:15:07No guys trying to intentionally lose games.
- 1:15:11It's like it's much better. So, I think.
- 1:15:14I think fans and general somewhat overstate the impact
- 1:15:17that was lost has on recruiting. I think recruiting blows down to
- 1:15:20relationships. And if you're a coach who can
- 1:15:22sell sell a young 18 year old kid on the prospect of you know
- 1:15:29playing Freer for your team in the future, you're trying to
- 1:15:32sell them a vision on what's going to happen in the future
- 1:15:35and that's what that's what we're putting bows down to these
- 1:15:36guys. Want to be a part of that
- 1:15:38wedding program so you can go through and a but if you can
- 1:15:40sell them on you know? Hey this we're going to get all
- 1:15:42these good guys and We're going to, you know, we're going to get
- 1:15:45this thing turned around. Like that's I mean, that's a,
- 1:15:47that's how you do it, you know. Anybody said about being kind of
- 1:15:51a part of something that you had a hand in building, and I think
- 1:15:56a lot historically Virginia players have taken pride in
- 1:16:00that, so just looking at it from that perspective, you know,
- 1:16:04they're, they're guys that. Yeah, they still see, they still
- 1:16:08see the bamas, they still see the George's.
- 1:16:09Obviously, those are easy to get eyes on your play, and because
- 1:16:13they get eyes on your plate, it's a path to the, to the next
- 1:16:17level, it makes that Easier. But in terms of just being a
- 1:16:21part of building something or bringing in this case, bringing
- 1:16:24something back, that's definitely something that I
- 1:16:26think, you know, can resonate with some kids especially kids
- 1:16:29in state abso-freakin'-lutely. And I think Robbie might sell it
- 1:16:33to best here. He sells a game in the idea that
- 1:16:36takes it be successful War regardless, where he's coaching,
- 1:16:39and it seems that way because clearly, I mean, he is a guy in
- 1:16:43his late 30s. He's already ranked up to a
- 1:16:46division one, you know, P5. G in a short time coaching and
- 1:16:51he's building a reputation as a good recruiter and a good coach
- 1:16:55overall and it was a pleasure to have him.
- 1:16:58Hopefully Brian's working on some other interviews.
- 1:17:00I don't know who else we're going to be getting in the near
- 1:17:02future open more? Yeah, I guess we have some of
- 1:17:05the turnpike here. We got something, we got
- 1:17:07something burning. What will we keeping you guys
- 1:17:10updated? We so.
- 1:17:12All right, so there's a big elephant in the room.
- 1:17:15We have not talked about it yet, we are an hour and 20 minutes
- 1:17:18in, I think we should be Ended because we haven't talked about
- 1:17:20it yet. It's a miracle.
- 1:17:23We got we do it. Take the low-hanging fruit,
- 1:17:25that's what he's gonna get. Well, I mean, you know, some of
- 1:17:28this we apply in a lot of things in this episode out for, you
- 1:17:31know, about a week or so. So, the big news, obviously, Joe
- 1:17:35Rudolph is now the offensive line coach at Notre Dame 70-year
- 1:17:39offensive line coach, you know, seven-figure offensive line
- 1:17:42coach, you know. I think that took him from being
- 1:17:46the fifth highest speed offensive line coach to the One
- 1:17:50high-speed ovens wind coach. So that says, not only a lot
- 1:17:53about the pool that we put in, for him to bring him here.
- 1:17:57But also how he's kind of viewed by others around the country,
- 1:18:02especially the Blue Bloods there.
- 1:18:04So even after a shitty 3 and 8 season.
- 1:18:06Yeah, I mean the best offensive line play in the country.
- 1:18:10Yeah, there wasn't a whole lot to kind of point at the resume
- 1:18:12last year and say, yeah, that's me right?
- 1:18:15So that definitely speaks to his reputation and speaks to To the
- 1:18:20relationships and he's built as well.
- 1:18:21So you know good for him. I mean that's a big move but now
- 1:18:25we kind of we turn the page right who's next?
- 1:18:30Well Anybody Everybody? Well no no it can't be anybody
- 1:18:34it's I'll say that. It can't be anybody but
- 1:18:38obviously the name start floating right between message
- 1:18:40boards. You know, Twitter in general and
- 1:18:44you know, one of the first things that popped up was to
- 1:18:46Washington and, you know, In for a lot of us, that's a, that's a
- 1:18:51hard because Todd played here, back in the 1990s, toddlers, a
- 1:18:56four-year starter guard, Center went on, and then played seven
- 1:19:01years in the NFL, which is, you know, basically three hundred
- 1:19:05fifty percent more than what normally happens.
- 1:19:07In guy, the NFL and started coaching immediately going to
- 1:19:10San Diego. He's made a plethora stops
- 1:19:13between, you know, the Ravens, the Jets, the Jags.
- 1:19:18And then you kind of look there. And say, well, he's a Virginia
- 1:19:20Tech guy, he coach with bowling last year and he could be a name
- 1:19:25out there, um, you know, does he come here, get out of the pro
- 1:19:31ranks and, you know, in any feelings on Todd Washington
- 1:19:36outside. This is if he was given the job.
- 1:19:40I mean, if he was off the job, he taken I think that's been
- 1:19:43made abundantly clear both by him and by others that know him.
- 1:19:49Um, I'm subtweeting Dwight Vic there, if y'all didn't know,
- 1:20:02it's my boys. So I take what he says, too
- 1:20:08hard, a lot and I know he knows his stuff but just looking at it
- 1:20:12as a fan man and knowing about recruiting.
- 1:20:16The only thing I can say, I don't even want to say - but
- 1:20:21like Todd hadn't been in that he hadn't been in the recruiting
- 1:20:25game in a long time, you know, and the thing that's going to
- 1:20:29get us to the next level is Talent.
- 1:20:31You know, we have to get some Talent, we have to be able to
- 1:20:34recruit and I think fontelle kind of said some stuff that a
- 1:20:37lot of people don't think about, you know, you recruit in certain
- 1:20:41places, your you have to talk to three and four people before you
- 1:20:45get to the kids before you get to a coach.
- 1:20:47So, That's that's the thing that worries me about him.
- 1:20:52The name, this more intriguing. I want to say more intriguing
- 1:20:55but to me it's intriguing to me is Marcus Marcus Johnson.
- 1:21:00So that name is very intriguing because he's first of all, he's
- 1:21:05like 66 350 pounds. Like, you want.
- 1:21:11I want a big man coaching offensive line and putting them
- 1:21:14saying, but just that name and looking at his resume and stuff
- 1:21:19like that, Like that. And what he's done and what he's
- 1:21:21played like, I like what I see from him, I'm I would like a,
- 1:21:25like a coach like that. That's just me.
- 1:21:27I listen Marcus Johnson right now is my one and I'm going to
- 1:21:31ask all y'all three at the end. I think tally, you might be
- 1:21:33feeling the same way as me, you know, he's a young guy, he's in
- 1:21:37his early 40s, he played a bunch of years in the NFL, he played
- 1:21:40down at Old Miss and then he kind of came up through the
- 1:21:44ranks, a little different, he started his strength and
- 1:21:46conditioning coach at Duke. Instead, they're worked his way
- 1:21:51up to 0 line coach. It shows you, he has a grind
- 1:21:53mentality as Brian playing online tally playing tight.
- 1:21:58In y'all know those guys can grind but the one piece that I
- 1:22:03look at in, why I like him more than anything, is he can recruit
- 1:22:07good. Look at his 24/7 profile.
- 1:22:09He recruited Charles Crossing developed Charles cross into a
- 1:22:12Charles cross, I hate to say this as a 49ers fan.
- 1:22:15He's gonna be a pain in the ass at left tackle for the next
- 1:22:17decade up at the Seahawks. He is, he just freaking is so,
- 1:22:25but then I see 18 and 19 goes Wikipedia page.
- 1:22:28Look at his bio. He played at Mississippi State
- 1:22:31under Joe Moorhead. We know and we saw at the end of
- 1:22:35last year, we're getting to that RPO mesh, we're getting to that
- 1:22:40RPO mesh. So He's done it for two years,
- 1:22:45he's done a drink which system, which is again, a similar mesh
- 1:22:48type offense. So I think probably for what
- 1:22:51Tyler bones looking to to coach offensive line wise.
- 1:22:55I think that's it. Sheldon, you got somebody else
- 1:22:59in mind though, right? Yeah.
- 1:23:01A guy that hasn't really been mentioning through these
- 1:23:02discussions as a Eugene Chung, I only bring up because I have a,
- 1:23:06I have a coaching buddy in the Richmond area, whose opinion.
- 1:23:08I respect greatly. When you just mentioned Eugene
- 1:23:11Chung, who is a tech graduates? Of 1992, I think Ezra.
- 1:23:16He was drafted into the NFL. He did a really he was a really
- 1:23:20big part of building out those egos offensive lines.
- 1:23:23I think they had a couple starters in the other rule this
- 1:23:25year that were kind of develop when he was there.
- 1:23:28He hasn't been there in a while, I think three years since he's
- 1:23:30been there. But they, the Eagles are
- 1:23:32typically, you know, one of the better offensive line teams in
- 1:23:35the NFL year over year and he was a big part of that.
- 1:23:38So you know I just I just thought it was a bit was a good
- 1:23:41kind of a Maybe under the radar name to mention, he's got it,
- 1:23:45obviously got great credentials. Great credentials, Kyle is son
- 1:23:49played obviously, take definitely super associated with
- 1:23:52the school and he coached a long time and he played a long time
- 1:23:55in the league and then he coached a long time in the
- 1:23:57league. Yep.
- 1:23:58So if if tomorrow they announced Eugene Chun I think us for like
- 1:24:03God loves the school. Guy knows how to coach o-line.
- 1:24:07Now I'm running kind of kind of similar higher to Todd
- 1:24:09Washington. Just not quite a little bit.
- 1:24:12It's Lightly different areas but slightly different are a little
- 1:24:15older but coach to coach, to a long, long time.
- 1:24:18Yeah. Now a couple of other things
- 1:24:20being thrown out there and these are more of our Penn State
- 1:24:23connections, is you got her painted, matte line, line Gro
- 1:24:26lime at Grover. Lime, like, the fruit has
- 1:24:32currently down at UCF with Gus Malzahn, was up in state,
- 1:24:36obviously, and in Vanderbilt and then you got lime Grover again,
- 1:24:40another Penn State guy, three years while I was there he's
- 1:24:44currently Kent State so he's taking a little step back.
- 1:24:47He is their cozy and all offensive line.
- 1:24:51Either these jump out for any of y'all Brian Calley.
- 1:24:56Herb hand is kind of the guy that I would like to go after.
- 1:24:59And there's a couple reasons, obviously, the connections style
- 1:25:03of play that we're looking for on offense.
- 1:25:06The other thing, you know, he's had stops at some bigger,
- 1:25:10programs you seen how that works.
- 1:25:13But he's also a guy that is at UCF right now making right at
- 1:25:17three hundred thousand dollars. So the pool Cool, that we have
- 1:25:22to offer at offensive line. Could be very significant for
- 1:25:26that caliber of Coach. Whereas, you know, you look at
- 1:25:30Marcus Johnson, he's making in the five hundred thousand dollar
- 1:25:33range. Looks like so whether Missouri
- 1:25:36can kind of jump up to meet meet that that's to be seen But I
- 1:25:40think we could actually from a bidding standpoint, our pool is
- 1:25:44pretty big especially because of what Joe Rudolph was making and
- 1:25:47what our potential is there. So I think Your 500k plus bump
- 1:25:55in salary for her paying might be very intriguing.
- 1:25:59Whereas, you know, a couple hundred thousand may not be
- 1:26:03worth. Worth it for Marcus Johnson, to
- 1:26:05kind of take the leap out of the SEC into the act and into kind
- 1:26:09of a rebuild. So that's kind of where I'm
- 1:26:11leaning and then you got, you know, another guy that's been
- 1:26:13mentioned is offensive line coach youth, at SMU Garin
- 1:26:17justice. So there's a lot of guys that
- 1:26:20are out there. I would put her pan in my top
- 1:26:24list of wants just because I think it is practical but also
- 1:26:30would be a really good replacement for Joe Rudolph.
- 1:26:32I'll say this about Justice, a ret Lashley system again.
- 1:26:36It's the RPO is the mesh spread. Look at what my it Brian
- 1:26:41mentioned it on this program when we played them after the
- 1:26:44flip, when they caiied Rhett, lastly, under main ideas.
- 1:26:48You basically said that offensive line of shit.
- 1:26:52Is shit. And basically, in one season,
- 1:26:55you know, Garin Justice went down there.
- 1:26:57And basically flip them to be a very competent offensive line
- 1:27:00where Miami That season ranked in the top 30 in offense.
- 1:27:05And he's really good at coaching pass, bro.
- 1:27:07Because the thing we've talked about before that season was
- 1:27:10like, this team is completely ass.
- 1:27:13That's true ass and they had a really big bump up, and then you
- 1:27:17brought up another stat from last year where, you know,
- 1:27:21running He's running Russian, the ball middle of the pack, but
- 1:27:24you know, really good in terms of not allowing sex.
- 1:27:27So I mean, it looks like that's traveling.
- 1:27:30It's not just a Miami thing. Yeah.
- 1:27:33And it any feelings towards those three guys tally or
- 1:27:37Sheldon and I'm kind of hey, I told you, you're being tired.
- 1:27:41Washington, I'd be all right with that.
- 1:27:44Like Brian said her hand, that's I think that's a good look for
- 1:27:48Marcus Johnson. Now, of course, you know,
- 1:27:52Virginia Tech fashion when get none of them three, we ain't
- 1:27:58going that route but that's okay.
- 1:28:00But that's just kind of what I think and what I what I look for
- 1:28:05and I'd love to see happen but she um, proud talked about it
- 1:28:09again. I'm if anybody hadn't.
- 1:28:11Yes. Yeah, hadn't built winning.
- 1:28:13Look at the TSL interview. He talked about, you know, we
- 1:28:18wanted to get we wanted to run the ball more.
- 1:28:21Then we did last year vova power running to him and it just it's
- 1:28:25just not us, you know? It just wasn't what we were
- 1:28:28going to be good at so they want to get to running the
- 1:28:31quarterback more so he said and I'm paraphrasing so I don't want
- 1:28:36to put words in his mouth but he said something to the effect
- 1:28:39that we want to run the quarterback to lead says hey I
- 1:28:42don't I don't want to run no more, you know what I mean?
- 1:28:45So we're going to get to that RPO and I think it's going to
- 1:28:49help us a lot. Because when we're good at That
- 1:28:52I think our team is good. So I shall let me ask you this
- 1:28:55just to get you kind of feel again being alumni of tech when
- 1:28:59that report and when it's been said that Tech damn near got up
- 1:29:04to a million to offer. Rudolph 975, I think is the
- 1:29:09number that is floating around. Did that shock you?
- 1:29:13Or does that say? Okay, we're back to where we
- 1:29:15were 15 years ago where we're top 15 top 20 and actually
- 1:29:19paying people Yeah, I mean the Arts up 28.
- 1:29:23I've even looked at numbers in a while but we are at least top 25
- 1:29:27in the country in terms of coaching salaries, for this
- 1:29:28particular staff. It's kind of crazy that when you
- 1:29:31look at it, like Tech was paying 9950 or something like that to
- 1:29:35Rudolph and he still has her Notre Dame who's giving him?
- 1:29:38You know, big a big salary increase and there's probably a
- 1:29:40handful of schools that can offer more than that her name.
- 1:29:44So kind of shows you like the discrepancy in terms of the you
- 1:29:46in the very top at the in college football, camp it all
- 1:29:49the rest, but like I don't think.
- 1:29:51The coaching salary is, just not an issue anymore.
- 1:29:53Like we have the money to hire quality assistance.
- 1:29:56Even if you look at guy like, you know, practice when he was
- 1:29:58making a ton, I don't know what the exact number was for Glen,
- 1:30:00but you know, he's making it, he's making a decent salary,
- 1:30:05same for all of, you know, all of our other coordinators.
- 1:30:08So it's, you know, the good thing about all this influx of
- 1:30:10cash and program. Like the Reach For Excellence
- 1:30:13campaign. Like we were in a much better
- 1:30:15position. I think.
- 1:30:15Infrastructure wise, you know, when you look at facilities,
- 1:30:19support staff coaching salaries, like Were much more competitive
- 1:30:22in those areas. So I don't worry too much about
- 1:30:25this higher because I think, at the very least, you know, we
- 1:30:28have we have a much more. We have a much better chance of
- 1:30:31making the right, the right height for us because we can
- 1:30:34compensate them adequately good. You are good.
- 1:30:38That you kind of, you know, brought up the quarterback
- 1:30:42position to quarterback coaching position as well.
- 1:30:46So I guess Curtis, you know what you're thinking about that man.
- 1:30:51What? You thinking about the corporate
- 1:30:52culture? Well, first of all where 10 days
- 1:30:55removed, I was hoping somebody would be named by mail, not only
- 1:30:59because it's easier to talk to his.
- 1:31:01Now, we got to do a bunch of speculation.
- 1:31:03I mean me and we need Brawn and tally you know last week Sheldon
- 1:31:07we talked about Brian Chris, just Brian, Chris get his chance
- 1:31:10or is it? You know a guy like Jeff
- 1:31:12Carpenter, you know, younger guy work with LSU has done some
- 1:31:18other stuff. Does he get his hands?
- 1:31:20I think the deeper we get into. I don't think it's gonna be, I
- 1:31:23don't think we're getting any internal hires.
- 1:31:25I think we are because of what shelving just said.
- 1:31:27We have the money to spend go find someone who has a track
- 1:31:31record or has a good connection and I'm sitting out here and I
- 1:31:36heard this thing so many times but I feel like the guy would
- 1:31:39just fumble the ball and to the other team and Lane Stadium, his
- 1:31:42name's Brandon Streeter, you know, Curtis got jokes, I got
- 1:31:47jokes go, 99 but I mean Streeter was recently let go back.
- 1:31:51Clemson and he had been there since 15.
- 1:31:54He's been coaching, you know, since 06 where he was at Liberty
- 1:31:57and then Richmond. So obviously he has been in
- 1:32:00Virginia before I think he's probably a good coat don't
- 1:32:03obviously, he is working with cream of the crop quarterback
- 1:32:06prospects in Trevor Lawrence in DeShaun Watson.
- 1:32:11So what's he going to do? As far as the system goes, you
- 1:32:15know, it's not quite what they're doing, but I don't think
- 1:32:20he would be a I'd hire the question is, you know, a bow
- 1:32:25just cut you from your alma mater, place, where you played a
- 1:32:30place, where you won two national championships is he
- 1:32:34ready to get it back in? The question, I mean, I don't
- 1:32:41have an answer for it. I've heard his name thrown
- 1:32:43around a lot from a recruiting, you know, from a recruiting
- 1:32:49standpoint. So that's kind of where I'm
- 1:32:51always thinking about what any hires that we're looking at is I
- 1:32:55feel like we've been so behind and recruit and just, you know,
- 1:32:59one or two athletes. That would take us to maybe the
- 1:33:03next level and I'm talking Next Level, just meaning even
- 1:33:06competing. In the ACC, bringing in somebody
- 1:33:10with a pedigree like that. I think would be would be
- 1:33:12awesome. So I don't know that we get him
- 1:33:16but I would I think it would be a good hire if we did.
- 1:33:20Yeah. And I think we're probably not
- 1:33:21going to see what I'd call Splash hires in both of these
- 1:33:25positions, I think. Yeah, I think you'll see
- 1:33:27probably a splash higher and one where we, where we go up to that
- 1:33:31you know, seven to eight hundred thousand dollar range for one
- 1:33:34coach. I don't know if we're going to
- 1:33:36push Yeah, the the limits of what will come off of.
- 1:33:40Like, we would try to retain Rudolph to hire both of these
- 1:33:43positions will see? I just don't, I don't
- 1:33:46necessarily think that's that's what's going to happen, but, I
- 1:33:49mean, I'd be fine with Streeter, you know, obviously, the main
- 1:33:52that always gets thrown out there.
- 1:33:53Every time you do, this is my car.
- 1:33:58I was just about to tell you speaking of Splash, higher,
- 1:34:01Vic's, name gets thrown out every time I'm a job.
- 1:34:03Comes open a toll on coach. Isn't that mean it's loaded
- 1:34:11every time I don't think it's ever going to happen.
- 1:34:14I think Mike you know AA all the work Mike's doing with
- 1:34:17Charities. All the stuff he's got with TV.
- 1:34:19I don't think that's going to happen.
- 1:34:23But, you know, I think what we are all are doing like we all
- 1:34:26have been doing since last Tuesday, as fans is we've been
- 1:34:30drawing lines, we've been trying to find, okay, who's got
- 1:34:33Streeter was thrown out there just readers and known name.
- 1:34:35He was in the ACC but then you start drawing the line.
- 1:34:38Okay. So who could it be?
- 1:34:40Who could it be? And you know, after doing some
- 1:34:46research, I look at a guy like Billy fessler really fast was
- 1:34:49over at Akron, so he's under Joe Moorhead.
- 1:34:52There's a media, the connection to the type of offense, that's
- 1:34:55going to be looked at this year. He played at Penn State.
- 1:34:59He's a significantly younger guy.
- 1:35:01Now a very, very young guy. So, you know, is it somebody
- 1:35:06like that? Where you probably if you're
- 1:35:09going to go, like you said, Brian just several seconds ago.
- 1:35:12If you go, Big Splash in the offensive line.
- 1:35:16Room. Yep.
- 1:35:18Then, can you afford to take a chance with a younger guy?
- 1:35:23I mean, what are you doing? You know, if we're talking
- 1:35:26about, you know, younger, guys. Let's, let's talk about somebody
- 1:35:29that's, you know, pretty much my age, has some connections with
- 1:35:32Boeing at Fordham and Coach to, in the NFL for the Jacksonville
- 1:35:39Jaguars, this past year. Let's talk about Andrew breiner.
- 1:35:41I mean, I think that's a another option that you can look at, you
- 1:35:45know, he was OC and quarterbacks coach at Fordham, then took over
- 1:35:50head coach. The time that Bowen was was
- 1:35:54coaching it for them there. So there's a connection there,
- 1:35:57similar type of job or head coaching tree.
- 1:36:01I'm getting the all Mississippi State staff as well.
- 1:36:04We're about to put together an 18 19.
- 1:36:07Yeah, so I mean, that's an option that's out there as well.
- 1:36:09So I mean, I think there's a lot of, you know, potential options
- 1:36:12there, you know, one of the things that's been floated kind
- 1:36:15of circling back to the Offensive line room is that, you
- 1:36:18know I don't think it's some people talk about Bo and taking
- 1:36:21over offensive line. That's not what I want to see
- 1:36:26why. Why he's coached it.
- 1:36:28He's played it. Yeah.
- 1:36:30So I don't like my OCS being offensive line.
- 1:36:34Coach has I like my OCS that have been offensive linemen but
- 1:36:38I don't like them being offensive line.
- 1:36:40Coach has because I'll say like this so Day to day, in practice,
- 1:36:48offensive line is very much for the first half of practice of
- 1:36:53very segmented group. They're not floating two
- 1:36:59different position groups like you would with tight ends
- 1:37:02especially you're not working with you know two or three
- 1:37:06position groups like you are quarterback or wide receiver.
- 1:37:10You know you are very much. Okay well you're here you know,
- 1:37:13you might get with the tight ends of running backs were some
- 1:37:15inside run. But most of the time you're
- 1:37:18working with your own group, you're getting with defensive
- 1:37:20tackles and doing some one-on-ones.
- 1:37:23This is a most of your work with the rest of the group is during
- 1:37:26that team period. So, allowing Bowen to be in a
- 1:37:31position where he can kind of look at various elements of the
- 1:37:33offense for longer periods of time during a practice, not just
- 1:37:37during that team period, I think, is more important.
- 1:37:40Offensive line is a very demanding position to coach, so
- 1:37:45I would like him to focus more on.
- 1:37:46Me the offense and seeing the whole picture of practice and I
- 1:37:50would focusing on getting that offensive line, right?
- 1:37:52So you've been really quiet while we've been other than
- 1:37:55laughing at the mic. Big joke is there, is there
- 1:37:57anybody, you have an eye owners there?
- 1:37:59Any of the names that we've mentioned that you say, hey,
- 1:38:02that might be the guy if you're talking about QB coach.
- 1:38:05Yeah, I think maybe the guy that was briefly mentioned in our, in
- 1:38:09our Twitter chat, had a Christian Taylor from Women.
- 1:38:12Marry he worked under you. He was under Mike London.
- 1:38:16Had a great day. Had a fantastic offense this
- 1:38:18season, really big turn around a school.
- 1:38:20That's here, typically not super easy to win at.
- 1:38:23So that's one guy. But I haven't been paying too
- 1:38:25much attention as much to the QB coach just because, like, I
- 1:38:28don't know, like, what you know, are they gonna make like an
- 1:38:31internal higher or just, you know, switch someone around like
- 1:38:34so, I don't know as well about that but Christian tellers, one
- 1:38:36guy to keep my own. All right?
- 1:38:39Yeah, yeah I think when you look at coaches, man, it's kind of a
- 1:38:43Two ends of the spectrum type thing, you need somebody who's
- 1:38:47either you know very well respected and has a great resume
- 1:38:52and just knows how to come in and get a job done.
- 1:38:55Or you got to take a chance on a younger guy that will kind of
- 1:39:00come in and know how to recruit a little better who can you know
- 1:39:04connect with the kids a little better?
- 1:39:06I mean look at fine tale. Yep.
- 1:39:08And I know we've got a long way to go to think about what he's
- 1:39:11going to do with his room or Able to see what he's going to
- 1:39:14be able to do with his room. But I don't think any Tech fan
- 1:39:19is upset at what he's done so far.
- 1:39:22You can even go back to Ryan Smith.
- 1:39:25I mean, I didn't know much about Ryan Smith before he got the
- 1:39:29job, but look at this. It is F4 said he did while he
- 1:39:33was here was a it was a good job.
- 1:39:37So it's at least a catch-22 you're talking coaching because
- 1:39:42you want somebody. Who you really are somebody that
- 1:39:46had, I'm sorry, Natalia I freaking went to college,
- 1:39:49because I went to college with Ryan Smith sister.
- 1:39:53Never knew the never correlated until she literally posted a
- 1:39:58picture of him up. Iy S this run.
- 1:40:01I'm a messenger. Be like why you got a picture
- 1:40:03Ryan Smith? Oh, that's my brother.
- 1:40:06Wha, you know, that kids going to the NFL.
- 1:40:10That's pretty cool. It was cool.
- 1:40:12Yeah, the girl we go we all work together but like so much going
- 1:40:20on right now you know because I think what's happened is is so
- 1:40:24late in the process and process it on TSN.
- 1:40:27We all heard it, right? The pro ranks are looking more
- 1:40:32and more into the college ranks for coaches.
- 1:40:34The young because what's happening is I think we're
- 1:40:37getting to that NFL level where they're guys who are getting in
- 1:40:40their late 60s that are retiring or guys that just essentially
- 1:40:46recycling out. And now it's like who is the
- 1:40:48most technical? Who's a great motivator, who can
- 1:40:53really put game plans together and they're going to the college
- 1:40:56ranks because the college ranks have so many more people also,
- 1:41:01you're running a lot more College style offenses in the
- 1:41:04NFL. Now, the concepts have changed
- 1:41:06like that over the last few years.
- 1:41:07So hopefully there'll be some news about somebody getting
- 1:41:11hired over the next few weeks. Because I'm just sitting here
- 1:41:16with two weeks away from Spring ball like we need to get
- 1:41:18somebody hired. Now, I don't want a position
- 1:41:20group to be done. All right, couple last nose
- 1:41:24before we close it out tonight, and sort of sucks on both ends
- 1:41:30Mike Hawkins, not on the roster anymore, coach made a brief
- 1:41:35Statement with that with Buddy, David Cunningham over T SL
- 1:41:39about, you know, there's some things going on, whatever is
- 1:41:41going on in Nikes personal life. We hope all gets to go.
- 1:41:44Well and then unfortunately for night and Johnson who's all
- 1:41:50probably gonna be depending on to be a to deep guy in the
- 1:41:53safety room. He tore his Achilles and he's
- 1:41:55done during workouts, can't workouts.
- 1:41:59So, you know, kind of a bit of bummer for both of those, you
- 1:42:03know, both those situations. Has to close it out here tonight
- 1:42:06but you know, you got to talk about it because I can't
- 1:42:09remember the exact time. You know, last week we talked
- 1:42:12about Jalen Jones moving over, right?
- 1:42:14He's nailing the safety room, right.
- 1:42:16And you see, night Hawkins gone night Johnson tears.
- 1:42:20Achilles, I mentioned what maybe they'll redshirting this year.
- 1:42:25Probably not going. If he's playing, good is
- 1:42:27probably going to be that way anymore.
- 1:42:30Very true man. And you know how it is is like
- 1:42:33you know, kid. Like you said, Nikes, he's just
- 1:42:36coming off of an injury and trying to get back and trying
- 1:42:39to, you know, compete for some time and you get hurt again.
- 1:42:42It's just devastating sometimes man to the mindset, but I've
- 1:42:46seen him put out, a put out, a tweet.
- 1:42:49I think what he was talking about, you know, just being
- 1:42:53there for his brothers and being around the team.
- 1:42:55So hope he just keeps his head in and keep moving forward for
- 1:42:58himself. There you go.
- 1:43:02Yep. Yep.
- 1:43:03That's big. I mean time you get injury like
- 1:43:05that. It's definitely a mindset that
- 1:43:06you have to come back from and you know especially when you're
- 1:43:09coming off an injury, like you said to Ali, you know, it can it
- 1:43:14can eat at you because you feel like alright I just I just climb
- 1:43:17my way out this hole a little bit.
- 1:43:18Now I'm kind of back in it so nothing nothing but your good
- 1:43:23wishes. His way of Lee speedy recovery
- 1:43:25and I know Achilles is always, that's a tough one.
- 1:43:28So So you know, wishing him the best.
- 1:43:31Alright guys? Anything additional to add
- 1:43:35anything breaking while we've been seared in here for an hour
- 1:43:39and 45 minutes, I just want to know.
- 1:43:41When are we getting Robbie on the show?
- 1:43:45I need Robbie on the show. Well, we have been thinking
- 1:43:49about potentially bringing him over in April for Spring ball
- 1:43:54preview, just because with it Riley being a coach.
- 1:43:57Robbie usually gives us a little insight.
- 1:43:58So So and I think Robbie is discussing coming to Blacksburg
- 1:44:02for the spring game. That is his birthday weekend,
- 1:44:05although I'm Turnt Up Dan. Are we gonna take it back to to
