- 1:12Buffy, okay we're live. We've got our fourth guest in studio for our mini series thanks to
- 1:22Pathfinder and this is a very exciting guest because you actually are a conscious investor
- 1:28and I've been told off these net word actually haven't I, I shouldn't use conscious
- 1:32investors because it's like a broad term. Can you use what, yeah there's just so many terms,
- 1:35there's responsible investing, ethical investing, conscious investing, honestly it's cool what you
- 1:40want though. Okay well I'm in a good with conscious because so Buffy can we start maybe with why
- 1:45your actions to you because obviously you do invest your money consciously but also you actually
- 1:50worked in the finance industry for a long time. Yeah all right so I'm gonna try and keep this brief.
- 1:55So I went to uni and I did a BAB Calm at Auckland Uni with a double major in economics and
- 2:03finance and that wasn't my intention. I wanted to do international business and marketing but once
- 2:08I started doing my B Calm every once in a while. What was that sorry? No I think it was this
- 2:13this score. Oh well okay. Keep it live. Sorry wow. So anyway so I went on well I'm not super keen
- 2:20on accounting so I guess I'll do the other two you know I guess I'll definitely say this is
- 2:25honestly sounds like my story like I literally was like oh I don't really know what this paper does
- 2:29but oh you're giving it a go and then it's like it was like a B Calm in economics and finance
- 2:33and it was like yeah it was kind of the default almost it was like totally these sound
- 2:38interesting-ish. Well I think I really was it was really strongly recommended that if you want to
- 2:44get a good job like if you want to get a job after university then you need to do one of the top
- 2:49three at least and that's kind of how it started. I never had you know dreams about working in
- 2:54finance or an investment or anything to do with that and in the year before I finished my degree
- 3:00again people other people the forces said that well if you get a good job. If you are doing finance
- 3:10in economics and you get good grades then you should apply for these internships at these places
- 3:14called investment banks which I had absolutely no idea what they were and so I just applied for
- 3:19these internships. I did an internship at first in Zed Capital which is now Jardin and over some
- 3:25for three months ended up working at ABN for a year and then moved to Goldman Sachs in the
- 3:31investment banking teams. It was a really challenging job it was well paid. Were you the only female?
- 3:37At ABN yes the only one. Yeah in the whole investment banking team yeah. Because that's the same
- 3:43as that grade. Totally yeah and it's like every job overhead I'm only female or the first female.
- 3:50Yeah and yeah it's crazy like still to this day like that was what 12 years ago. I can't imagine
- 3:56ever being in a job and it just being guys. I reckon also firstly I'd be very distracted like
- 4:03but also not a hunger stripper. Not really my kind of guy but but in saying that I just feel like
- 4:10I struggled to understand what that would be like it feels like the 1800s for there to be no other
- 4:17woman. Yeah I used to find it quite intimidating when I was younger because you're because you're
- 4:22also young you're not that confident you're still learning the ropes and you're also a minority
- 4:27in that sense and then but now I'm kind of like hey I I know what my strengths are. But now I think
- 4:34see who's the shit she just wants around. I'm very sure. I don't think she's pretty much.
- 4:40Pretty much. No but you kind of you grow into yourself yeah and it's probably just the case of
- 4:44being older as well and I just don't give a shit as much but like yes. Part of me part of me
- 4:49and I think we chat about it was on the phone like part of me would quite like to go back into
- 4:53that industry now because I would own it and I would own my worth and you know my contribution
- 4:59whereas even when I left I was still always felt like I was less than in that industry get paid
- 5:04a base salary and a bonus and the bonus is can be you know in the lower ranks less than the base
- 5:11than the higher ranks much higher than the base. Can you give me an example I'd love to know I mean
- 5:15I haven't got a clue what you'd get paid in those kinds of jobs. I mean well when I graduated
- 5:21my first rollout of uni was 80k. Mine was like 25. I know. Wow that's amazing. So you were just so
- 5:28crazy to be getting paid back. I'll pitch a tent at work exactly. We hear the entire day.
- 5:34Totally my life to you at no worries and then also and then bonus on top of that. Yeah bonus
- 5:40and how do they work. I mean I'm sure it's so it's every how much how hard you work how
- 5:45let you work how much you kiss us. I reckon it's a combination of those three. Would it be like
- 5:5020s and one go is that a thing? It would be like a hundred percent of your salary or up more. Yeah
- 5:56up to I reckon. You could get an 80 grand bonus. Yeah not when I first graduate. This is a
- 6:02while back but I was definitely not getting. I can't even remember what my pay was the first.
- 6:08Actually I think you know what I think when I graduated MMO base was 65 and I think the bonus
- 6:13might have been like 20 or 25. That's amazing. But this is a while ago. But also what an amazing
- 6:19way to save because the thing is normally when you're drip fed your salary you are spending kind
- 6:25of within your means but if you're getting then a bonus on top of that it's a way easier way
- 6:29to save or invest because I know the only way I've either had lump sum in my account was when I
- 6:37got tax back through my Australian accounts and it was something to do with being in contract roles
- 6:43but that was the only that was the first time that I looked my bank account and called for I can
- 6:47thought hey I've got some savings you know so if you were getting that as part of your kind of yearly
- 6:55thing makes it a lot easier to get started for sure. Yeah and I think it's a combination of being
- 7:00paid well at a young age was helpful but then I also do think the other part is having a savings
- 7:07mentality like I I had my first part-time job when I was 13 years old working at this awful chicken
- 7:14shop and like stuffing chickens. But I took that job because it got I got paid $8.50 and all my
- 7:20friends were getting paid $5.50 a new world so I took the job because it was and I didn't
- 7:25spend all the money on clothes because it's just not the personality that I was so I saved most of
- 7:29what I was earning so I think there is having that mentality early on as well that don't spend
- 7:34everything if you spend everything you earn you are never going to it's compound returns right we're
- 7:38gonna talk about with us but so even if you've only got a little bit start with just start investing
- 7:43it straight away because that will start to grow start to compound and get to the point where it's
- 7:46like it just has a life of its own. When you worked in finance so when you're in the industry you
- 7:51had an experience where you basically found out that there was a pay gap. I love like you guys know
- 7:58what you're talking about like don't like oh my gosh so excited. It's a good story. So on one of the
- 8:03said late nights I don't I can't even remember what I was doing but I found this printout of was
- 8:08basically like obviously an excelled printout of all the the remuneration across the team. I'm like
- 8:13so it was no one else at work it was late at night no it was late at night I think I was the
- 8:16only one there maybe there's some couple of guys on the desk still or someone would have
- 8:19accidentally printed that and being like shit they were not home and I'm like oh my gosh
- 8:24we're just a one page so I took it good on you and so what was on it anyway so it had all of
- 8:29the remuneration for everyone on the team and I was at that point the most junior of the analyst but
- 8:34I was still an analyst and for some reason it had because I kept at home for quite a while you
- 8:39know I'd like look on it and do some little modeling. It's good motivation to see well if they were
- 8:44a third-year analyst and they were age 27 and they were getting paid that then then when I'm
- 8:51aged 27. Oh so it didn't have names. It had names and it had like what their pay was each year
- 8:57so I could see that or you know as a junior analyst he got paid that then that then that then
- 9:02that and that's these guys are more senior that got paid that that that's I could I put myself
- 9:06on this spreadsheet you know well I got paid that that hang on a second something is really
- 9:10different here mine is going up yeah and it is higher than my peers who work outside of this industry
- 9:18so I should have nothing to complain about. Hold on we need to backtrack so so basically you found
- 9:23this piece of paper and on it had all the names of the people who you worked with when they were
- 9:29paid what amount and then you basically saw that you were paid less than them at all of those
- 9:35stages yeah but you tried to justify it by saying you're getting paid higher than your friends
- 9:39well yeah I mean I could see that while I'm getting paid you know easily 25% less than what the
- 9:45the men were the lads the men getting paid when they were at my social list of the salary yeah
- 9:51so if someone was on 80 grand you'd be getting 20 grand less than what they were paid for the same
- 9:54draw yeah about that so then it's absurd but then it's like oh but let's say they're getting paid
- 10:01100 and I'm getting paid 75 well I can't complain that's still a really good salary it's still
- 10:05that sucks I hate that mentality we all women have it so that was that was that was basically
- 10:11it and um and you know so you justify it to yourself by going well I'm lucky to have this job
- 10:17anyway it's well paid I should be really grateful and I am well maybe I'm not as good as them
- 10:22maybe that's why I'm paying this at least your heart it was so not that and so did you ever confront
- 10:28your boss and say hey I've just found this printout busted no but I kind of knew at my next review
- 10:35you had links well I should I should I should ask for this yeah I've had some other situations
- 10:43because I don't know if this is like illegal I hatched my boss's computer all right my
- 10:51was a printout it was just sitting on a printer it was born a season and we the way the
- 10:56bonus was structured was it was a percentage of your salary so if you knew the if you knew the
- 10:59bonus you could quite easily work out whatever I was getting paid and it was bonus time and I found
- 11:07this piece of paper and I at first I kind of was like oh I don't know I don't it's not mine I don't
- 11:13know what it is and then I was like hang on a second I can't wait your time I look around and I was
- 11:18like oh my gosh and I just remember looking at it and being like doing exactly the same I justified
- 11:24it I was like oh no but I've only been there two years and they've been there three so therefore oh
- 11:28no and I'm my the fund I'm managing is smaller than his so you know and you just you just start
- 11:33doing all these things like oh no but he actually reports to two people and I only report to this one
- 11:39or you you just justify absolutely in any way possible you're just like oh no no definitely not
- 11:44but it did actually spark something you mean I the next yeah the next review I had
- 11:49well I was going to ask for a review and I kept avoiding it and I was like that yeah
- 11:54I'm like no no it's right they'll just pay me what they think I should repay and that's the thing
- 11:57right yeah they'll pay me what I'm worth yeah so I don't need to
- 12:00exactly and ask if I as long as I work hard and I think when I was at uni that's we had to do if
- 12:06you worked hard you got the grades yeah there was no debate about it but it's just what's fair
- 12:11yeah it's not how but if you work hard you don't necessarily get paid as much the next person
- 12:15not if you don't make as big a song of dance as they do and the guys make really good
- 12:20song of dance about how hard they're working and then I yeah so I went into my
- 12:25pair of you and I asked I went in and I was prepared and I asked they said of all the things that my
- 12:30you know the extra responsibilities I'm doing and why I should be paid more than I am now
- 12:34and they came back in that said no and I was just like so did you cry I I think I was just
- 12:42really gutted you know you know I just built up all this courage and had all this justification
- 12:47of why I think I should pay this and you still said no and I was just like you're like oh I've
- 12:51got a piece yeah but I couldn't say that so I was like oh yeah I'm like buying my life yeah and then
- 12:57even just having to have that conversation I would make me feel really good
- 13:00well what's your lady and and not a nice person it made me feel pretty greedy because they said
- 13:06no it wasn't like a case of yes oh my god we totally agree and we'll hear even like five thousand
- 13:11dollars would have been fine or like but it's not you feel stupid it was just there was nothing
- 13:14and I was like oh okay and then you sit there and you're like oh maybe maybe that right maybe
- 13:18I'm not worth on it you know and you start giving it again but then I think I was old enough to
- 13:23realize that if they didn't set a value in me I don't want to be at a place of work that doesn't
- 13:29value you know it doesn't value me you know like it's a hell is it possible for and then they were like
- 13:35oh oh Vic let us know what do you want to be paid well while making stay and I was like are you
- 13:39guys for real like I just asked you remember that chat in my review I asked for more money and
- 13:45in my next job I was just you're way more bossy about it yeah I to the point that I was I found a
- 13:51bit oh but that would have been half as much as what the guy that I know and then I just remember
- 13:57being like my sister said something to me and she was like you don't want to be the person they're
- 14:02like oh we got her for a bargain you know you want to be the person they're like I wish we could
- 14:05afford her and it's so true Sarah how is it the words of wisdom always yeah so but also you
- 14:12know there's this element of I don't want to be that woman who's like the bitch yeah one who's
- 14:18always asking for start you know yeah so I don't know I just but that's a whole lot of psychology as
- 14:23well that is a whole lot of fan theme I'm not psychology talk about that for hours but it's like
- 14:27if women ask for that they're considered a bitch and then if men ask for that you know they're
- 14:31considered confident confident and yeah and yeah exactly and in fact I'm just going to bring up one
- 14:37study which I think exemplifies this perfectly which is the study where they had me a group of
- 14:42girls and boys all did it in exam and then afterwards they asked them how they went and the
- 14:47the guys universally aster nailed it smashed and the girls all female
- 15:02universally said oh yeah you know what that was actually really hard I totally think I stuffed up
- 15:06that last answer that that right then they look at the comparison between the actual results
- 15:12and lo and behold the girls have gotten as good if not better than the guys but they didn't talk
- 15:16it up but these guys talk it up so when you go into a situation where the remuneration is variable
- 15:22like that like with a bonus situation then you've got half of the group talking it up and one part
- 15:27gone oh yeah I guess I probably didn't do a great job on that project that we were working on so
- 15:33sure there's a similar study I think around a woman applying for jobs and if a woman can do
- 15:4070% of the job description she'll say oh no I I can't do 30% I won't apply but if the male
- 15:48counterpart can do 30% of the job description he will apply maybe like I will just figure out
- 15:53the 70% later it's I mean it's a systemic ingrained let's play it down and be smaller than we are
- 16:01kind of an editor I think it's an age thing as well so I do think if I went back now I would be
- 16:07way different because I know all that and I understand all that and I value myself more you know I
- 16:12have more self confidence just in me which is nothing to do with finance sector this is just a

- 16:54and a copy of the product disclosure statement you left the finance industry about 10 years ago now
- 17:00but you're still quite involved in investing yeah so yeah I'd always been like a sensible person
- 17:06with savings and then when I started working at age 21 and this relatively well-paid job
- 17:12then I didn't need all that money to live on you know so I started saving straight away and because
- 17:17I was working in banking that's what everyone did they put their savings into investments like no
- 17:22one bought residential property when you're in banking because you were like well we were in the thick
- 17:26of stocks of course we're going to invest in stocks I started investing all my savings straight
- 17:30into investment into stocks at age 21 and I had some really bad experiences so I had a couple of
- 17:37what I'd love to hear some stories thinking a company was going to get a takeover offer and going
- 17:43all in like literally put 50% of my life savings into this one company and I won't say what the
- 17:49company is why can't you it doesn't matter now fish from park or appliances and then what I think
- 17:54but it's okay taking over totally tanked I think I bought a total of 80 we're down to a dolled
- 17:5920 else I'm like that how should you lose like the total I think I must have I think I maybe
- 18:03maybe put like 85k in there and then did you take your money out and then go take another
- 18:08yep call classic okay sorry sorry sorry to laugh but it's just like that happens all the time
- 18:14you just like get sick of waiting yeah and you're just like oh screw it and take your money out
- 18:18and then something happens you're like oh you always like invest for the long too
- 18:25but what I learned from that is I mean the takeover offer then came by I think higher
- 18:28this is so long ago so all my numbers will be wrong but the takeover offer was for slightly more
- 18:33I think it went down to 80 cents I think the takeover was a dollar 20 but I still weigh down
- 18:39on the 285 entry price that I've got you know so funny story that was my first investment
- 18:46recommendation was fish and park appliances and are you you're nothing about fish and park
- 18:50about appliances and we had this analyst come in and like usually they're supposed to like pitch
- 18:54ideas to you and you can ask them also you can ask them questions about you know because they know
- 18:59the company's quite well and had this analyst come in and I was like fresh like I probably like
- 19:05and I was like and they were like saying no no terrible investment no no and I was sitting
- 19:10there going I think it's quite a good investment and so I went back to the team I was like I think
- 19:14we should buy this and then Brian actually yeah and he was like okay and I was like oh oh no I mean
- 19:21you're like you're you're really confident until they actually invest in and you're like oh
- 19:25shit and then it got taken over like within a few weeks and I was like I'm just doing stuff
- 19:30as I probably sold my FPHs to you oh my god let's just cut that chair now I can cut the
- 19:39tension really now no it was really it was it was a good lesson such a good lesson on diversification
- 19:43actually not so much on selling at the bottom because I think I didn't want to be in there
- 19:49but just can you write on that for those that might not understand so when you say diversification
- 19:54don't put 85 grand into one don't put all of your eggs I mean if your portfolio is a million
- 19:59dollars sure put 85k into a stock but don't put 50% of your portfolio into one stock because you
- 20:05heard someone say that someone said that someone said that there might be a takeover I mean that's
- 20:10just classic stupid and so the takeover is when someone comes in and offers a premium right so
- 20:16then you get a lot more than what you would have otherwise so it's another company buying and
- 20:21buying a company effectively and they need to make it attractive enough for all shareholders to
- 20:25sell to them so like a Twitter yeah Elon Musk it's time Leon I was waiting for Elon and he never
- 20:32turned up oh yeah so if you had chosen to come in I was like oh so if I'll give you I'll buy
- 20:38your shares for what they are plus 1% you'd be like no I don't want to start it you'd be like
- 20:45what about what they are plus 40% you'd be like okay yeah you know so you've got to make it you
- 20:49and then so take over offers they usually start yes it can be whatever but maybe you say 20%
- 20:54and then yeah 20% premium so if you think something's going to be taken over it's like a quick one
- 20:59right yeah it's a bit of a cheat it's got any hot tips you want to send them in and then she said
- 21:04oh I'll put all my money in it but it is it's a bit of a cheat it's gonna approach and that's
- 21:09what I learnt that that's not that actually the best way to do it to be to invest on little
- 21:14tips like that oh that's a harsh way to learn that one yeah no most of all it was it was
- 21:21invest on the quality of the company and and it's potential long term and you believe in that
- 21:27company do you really like the the management team and the industry and the potential growth
- 21:32for that company and also don't put all your own eggs in one basket so be diversified so that
- 21:37if that one does go wrong it doesn't matter because the rest are going well and so like I've never
- 21:42made that mistake again ever and it's and it's worked really well it's a really expensive learning
- 21:47curve as well I know and so in terms of conscious investing because you've obviously worked and
- 21:53I was about to say the dark side that's a bit mean you've worked in the industry and hard management
- 21:58the dark side but but now that you're managing your own money you're still also very involved
- 22:02in investing and is that because of your husband so okay age 29 left had all of my money invested
- 22:11in stocks like every single dollar no property just everything was in stocks and by that time it
- 22:18added you know I mean I'd had been paid a salary every year I had not spent it all and then my
- 22:23returns are compounded other than FPA and so I left at 29 with a reasonable portfolio investment
- 22:29portfolio so I kept that portfolio and during that time I had met my partner who's my still my
- 22:35current partner and he was in the investment banking team and he stayed there when I moved to
- 22:39equity research and then when I left equity research he moved into BA portfolio manager so
- 22:47managers portfolio is for individual high net worth individuals so if they're not going to go
- 22:51and opt for a fund option like a third or a pathfinder etc and they want a personalized approach
- 22:57and it's generally because they're high net worth then they will use someone like Tony as their
- 23:01investment advisor so he still works in that industry so he's at JBW and now I was in a portfolio
- 23:07investment advisor and he had all his money I mean he had started in age 21 did a economics
- 23:15finance start at age 21 done the exact same as me but just seven years older so now I had my
- 23:20it's always so hot that's a great age gap I remember thinking that it was creepy
- 23:27I used to be I'm 23 you're 30 guys really creepy and so you guys are obviously married and so I
- 23:35guess in terms of your the way that he's managing money has that changed a lot totally so up until
- 23:42age when I was 29 he was obviously 36 we were just investing in stocks I didn't think we cared what
- 23:46they were we were probably investing in like child prostitution daco and I just it wasn't even on my
- 23:52radar when I went through my own like health journey healing from graves disease and I just
- 23:58discovered so much around the world of agriculture and animal treatment and planet and climate change
- 24:07and all these things which are now quite commonly known but back then maybe not so much I became
- 24:13aware of all these and thought well gosh if I I really care about animals and I really care
- 24:17about the planet and I want dolphins and whales and always amazing animals still to be in our oceans
- 24:22just magical things you know I want to go to the rainforest and seal the birds and and so
- 24:28therefore I should make sure what I'm investing my money in matches with those ethos and that was
- 24:34literally all it was so I kind of started saying to Tony oh I don't want to invest in that
- 24:40that anymore I like I want to invest in who's doing organic farming who out there's doing organic
- 24:44farming no one I mean living the list of space you know but okay who's doing a renewable energy
- 24:51like wind and solar we're aware of those companies and so together we kind of went on this journey
- 24:56of like in our personal life of changing what we were eating and what we were using to be more
- 25:02sustainable options you know more conscious options healthier options type thing and so as a result
- 25:09like our investing sort of can't went that way and he was still in the thick of it being a portfolio
- 25:14investment advisor so here I mean I think he is one of the first it's now yeah eleven years he's
- 25:21he was the first investment advisor focused on ethical investing no one else was talking about it
- 25:26I know it's really popular now but everyone else almost would laugh at him that he wasn't going to
- 25:31own fontara in his portfolio because it was one of the main stocks in the index so it's a big
- 25:37call to not own one of the main stocks in the index but for us we would say well maybe we don't
- 25:43want to own that for XYZ reason I love Tony go Tony yeah that's good he's really good yeah yeah
- 25:49and so you're often involved in those conversations at home I guess you probably talk about stocks
- 25:54you know we don't you're not in the industry but you kind of probably feel like it totally I still
- 25:58feel like I have one foot in the door through him and of course he is his own person and manages all
- 26:02of his clients like I'm not involved in that at all but we'll chat about stocks and we'll chat about
- 26:08probably more like sectors and industry trends because I'm really across that with what I'm doing
- 26:13now yeah so I'll say well hey what about this sector what about this what about renewable energy
- 26:19what about when what about solar what about organic farming what about
- 26:25electric vehicles what's the exposure we can we get an exposure in that and does exposure mean
- 26:30like can we buy some stocks in that area exactly yeah that we'll give us exposure to that
- 26:35industry or that sector that I really believe in that I want to support that I want to grow
- 26:40and also this idea that I've always thought like we've always thought that if you invest your
- 26:46money in things that are good maybe this is naive but I don't know I've 10 years now I don't
- 26:51think it is that if you invest your money in companies that you believe in that are doing the
- 26:56right thing for people for communities for animals for the planner like those are the ones I'm
- 27:01getting goosebumps saying because those are the ones that are actually going to in the long term
- 27:07do the best maybe maybe short term no but in the long term like our investments that we have in
- 27:12wind farms and solar energy are completely insulated for example from the conflict at the moment
- 27:18with Ukraine where you know you're relying on fossil fuels that all come from that area of the
- 27:22world rather than going what's a way that we can we can we can still have electricity and energy
- 27:28but do it in a more sustainable way that's you know it has has a lower footprint on the planet
- 27:34and on on people like when you look at some of those communities that live in those areas where
- 27:39they have those fossil fuel energy plants I mean quite outside quite apart from global warming
- 27:44the people who live in those areas have like really high rates of cancer all sorts of chronic
- 27:49disease so they can't get out so here we are sitting in lovely old you know New Zealand and
- 27:55putting your money into something which is forcing those people to do a job that's so much bigger
- 28:01than just the idea of your returns or the idea of trends or the idea of the planet it's people
- 28:05and like at the end of the day like it doesn't really matter if the planet is surviving or not if
- 28:10people aren't here then yeah what's it all for you know and it's funny like you say about those
- 28:16you know those long run trends and when you see in quality companies that look after the air
- 28:19you know that look after the people look after the planet it's so true like during COVID
- 28:23the companies that have done well the ones that actually looked after their staff and either keep
- 28:28paying them or you know just took that extra step to be like hey we'll help you out because you
- 28:32know it's a difficult time rather than the ones that were just like in that see you later like we
- 28:36can't open the doors so you know like you just take that extra step to be a bit more careful
- 28:40with how you treat your staff then they're way more receptive to you know continuing working
- 28:45for you and being a part of doing a good job and the idea for and turn the company being successful
- 28:50and it's like the trend like talking about trends as well it's like you've got more and more
- 28:54countries needing to use more renewable energy it's like okay well I want to invest in the companies
- 28:59that are providing that or you know a part of that as well you don't want to invest in the companies
- 29:03that are just seeing the less and less demand for their businesses or for their operations or
- 29:09you know companies with using fossil fuels again just become less and less and less so it's
- 29:14yeah you want to position your investments that are also aligned with that trend but that trend
- 29:18but that trend is also a good trend if that makes sense yeah totally oh I'm just really
- 29:23passionate about that area and and also about women being educated in that area which obviously
- 29:27you girls are whereas I know for many people it's something that's it's really it's really something
- 29:33they're really nervous about and so so most New Zealanders will thank well soon as I've saved
- 29:3980k I should put a deposit down the house as opposed to maybe a five saved 80k I should
- 29:44do some investments in the stock but I saved 10 grand of my 80k I'll invest the 10 and grow it
- 29:49grow it to 80k I mean we I mean like we're tiny and I we didn't buy a house until I was like eight
- 29:56months pregnant because we thought we'd rather much rather have our investments and our beautiful
- 30:00just diversified stock portfolio than a residential property and so we really only bought that house
- 30:06like last minute dot com you know because and not for financial reasons for lifestyle lifestyle
- 30:12emotional reasons this is our place we can paint it the color we like we can insulate it the
- 30:16how we like and and it hasn't been a bad financial decision either but again we see that
- 30:21property that like properties as part of your diversified portfolio so if you're going to have
- 30:25a residential property don't own residential property in your stocks for example you know all
- 30:30like that's a great tip yeah like your whole and this is what like a private client advisor will
- 30:35do it's look at your whole net worth okay so you've got 150k total that's everything how much
- 30:41you've got in property how much have you got in industrials how much is an energy how much and
- 30:46and if you've got a lot of your money in a physical property then you want to adjust your stock
- 30:50portfolio accordingly to well first thing not to be invested in property but yet to just be
- 30:56looking at different you probably want to go for like some higher growth sectors because you've
- 30:59already got something that's really stable the really awesome thing about what you just said as
- 31:03well as I think because there's a lot of people that kind of forward property you know a lot of
- 31:07people don't have 150 200 grand just you know that's a lot of money it's really inspiring to
- 31:14hear that you had this amazing portfolio that was really successful and grew and you saw returns
- 31:20from that and that was completely aside from the New Zealand property market yeah yeah and
- 31:26and like in our portfolio now we will we'll have New Zealand stocks there's some great kiwi stocks
- 31:32to have and it's good to have exposure across you guys will talk about this here it's about
- 31:36exposure exposure across different sectors as well as different countries you know if all your
- 31:41money is in Ukraine and Russia then Europe is a problem but the same goes for everything so you
- 31:44just want to be diversified across different countries and different sectors which like you this is
- 31:48what you would do all the time but now also I think there's so much more opportunity for people to
- 31:54invest in these small funds which are ethically focused so even if you only have you know it's
- 32:00only but even if your current investment portfolio size that you have available to you
- 32:05is $10,000 you can still start now with one of these funds and the benefit of being in a fund
- 32:10is that if you're a smaller size you're still going to get all that beautiful diversification
- 32:15without having to buy one dollar of Tesla and one dollar of Google and what have you you know so
- 32:21that I think even just I can sell the options now and and I just think that's so exciting for
- 32:27young people the all they need I think is that confidence boost of going yes this is a good
- 32:32thing to do don't be scared but we don't get taught about in school or anything right so if you
- 32:36don't study at uni we know there's nothing about financial investments or diversification or the
- 32:42fact that you can yeah you you're stocks and investing to grow grow your wealth um everyone
- 32:49doesn't really keep moving my chair these are not farts these are chair movements maybe my chair sorry
- 32:53just like so you're wiggling out of the shot sorry I'm just like my back is like
- 32:58I'm gonna such it all but I think that's it saying to people to young people you don't necessarily
- 33:05need to you know when you soon as you've got some savings by house and then once you've got some more
- 33:10leverage up and buy another house and buy another house and this is actually a bit of a problem with
- 33:14the housing market and there's another option out there and the great thing is is it's hands off
- 33:19you know because you can if you're using one of these providers you can still be involved and
- 33:23choosing something that's really aligned with your fx and there are quite a few options now
- 33:29but it's also you're not having to be a landlord and you know um and you also don't get that
- 33:34downtime if people have got rental properties and they have a downtime period of two to four weeks
- 33:38between tenants and you have no rent you don't have that with stocks you know it's just consistent
- 33:43I'm conscious of the fact that we've been talking for ever and I still would like to get out of
- 33:48you what you actually invested in your personal portfolio that's on my list of questioning uh which
- 33:54I would like to get to but we're front out of time and I was just wondering Buffy if there was
