Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Captain of the money Minui, commander of Von Gray is
- 0:02Speaker 1: among three Navy officers being charged over at sinking in
- 0:04Speaker 1: Sami last year. You remember that they all face court
- 0:07Speaker 1: martial proceedings alleged of negligently causing a ship to be lost.
- 0:12Speaker 1: John Battersby is senior fellow, Massive University Center for Defense
- 0:15Speaker 1: and Security Studies. John. Good morning, John. Are they are they?
- 0:18Speaker 1: What's the story here? Are they out for blood or
- 0:20Speaker 1: is this just process or what?
- 0:23Speaker 2: I would definitely say it's process, and it's inevitable whenever
- 0:27Speaker 2: a major air set light. This is lost in peace time,
- 0:30Speaker 2: of course, is going to be an inquiry is huge
- 0:32Speaker 2: public interest, major public Yes, there has to be an
- 0:36Speaker 2: inquiry that exhaustively looks at all the circumstances. And as
- 0:41Speaker 2: a commander of a naval pistol, your one job is
- 0:45Speaker 2: to keep that above order. So no, they're not out
- 0:48Speaker 2: for that. This is the accountability process that is perfectly
- 0:52Speaker 2: normal in a circumstance.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Does it mean that they've looked at other factors and
- 0:56Speaker 1: determined it must have been human era?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Though? I think they've looked at all possible factors, and
- 1:02Speaker 2: I think that when the Naval report that came out
- 1:04Speaker 2: did highlight a number of contributed factors or associated factors.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So no, it doesn't, it doesn't rule those out. But
- 1:12Speaker 2: what it does do is the human element of this
- 1:17Speaker 2: needs to be explored, and that is what this inquiry
- 1:21Speaker 2: will do.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Okay, what is that negligence? What's the punishment? Well, what
- 1:24Speaker 1: could be a punishment or something like that.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Oh, there could be a range of punishments, and it
- 1:30Speaker 2: would be probably unwise to be too too speakative about that.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The losing a ship in peace time, that's a that's
- 1:40Speaker 2: a serious matter. So I can't imagine there'll be a trifle.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Hey, your thoughts John, on what's going on in the
- 1:45Speaker 1: Middle East? You must be interested in that.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Oh, when your reporter rang me last night, he said,
- 1:51Speaker 2: we're not going to ask you about that, So be
- 1:54Speaker 2: prepared for everything. Yeah, look there, there's Look, there's are
- 1:57Speaker 2: so much happening over there at the moment. I would
- 2:00Speaker 2: say historically, whenever the Americans have got involved in Iran,
- 2:03Speaker 2: there's been a short term tactical success and much small, severe,
- 2:09Speaker 2: longer term, much less successful outcomes. See the fifty three
- 2:13Speaker 2: overturning of a democratic elected president there led to a
- 2:18Speaker 2: period of very very poor government that was not in
- 2:21Speaker 2: the advantages of the Iranian people and inevitably lead to
- 2:24Speaker 2: the two and seventy nine which has put the current
- 2:27Speaker 2: regime in there. So look from a historical perspective, not
- 2:32Speaker 2: looking terribly enthusiastically at what's happened over there, although you
- 2:37Speaker 2: know that raging is horrific. So while I won't publicly
- 2:41Speaker 2: celebrate the death of any human individual, the overturning of
- 2:44Speaker 2: the raging, but that is going to happen. As long
- 2:47Speaker 2: as it leads to a better one could be a
- 2:50Speaker 2: good outcome. But again, we seem to be hoping a lot,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and there doesn't seem to be a clear objective in
- 2:56Speaker 2: what the Americans are doing, not a clear cut one.
- 2:59Speaker 2: There's no obvious successor we could go back to what
- 3:03Speaker 2: was there before.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent, John, thanks very much your time
