- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host Mark Kenyan. This episode number two and twenty one.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Ante in the show, we're talking summer trial cameras, big woods,
- 0:23Speaker 1: habitat projects, CWD, hitting close to Home, and much much more.
- 0:43Speaker 1: All right, welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast, brought
- 0:46Speaker 1: to you by Onyx and today it's just me and
- 0:49Speaker 1: Dan and thank for this one. We just need to
- 0:52Speaker 1: have a good old sitter on the campfire BS session. Um,
- 0:57Speaker 1: since since when this podcast will be actually going out
- 0:59Speaker 1: to the world. That's gonna be fourth of July week,
- 1:03Speaker 1: so hopefully a lot of us will be on vacation.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I actually will sort of be on vacation. Um, so
- 1:10Speaker 1: it makes sense that we just need to kick back
- 1:11Speaker 1: and have a good time, don't don't you think? Dan?
- 1:14Speaker 1: I agree, man, we need to just let it all
- 1:17Speaker 1: hang out on this episode. That sounds like exactly what
- 1:21Speaker 1: everyone's hoping for. Um, we have. We haven't done just
- 1:25Speaker 1: like a you and Me BS in a while though,
- 1:26Speaker 1: So there's a there's a good amount of stuff to
- 1:28Speaker 1: catch up on. I thought, um, you've been up to
- 1:31Speaker 1: some good stuff in the woods. I've been up to
- 1:33Speaker 1: some different projects. There's some kind of recent news around
- 1:37Speaker 1: me in Michigan that I think we should talk about. Um. Plus,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm taking off on trip soon. I don't know. There's
- 1:43Speaker 1: all sorts of good things we could dive into. So
- 1:46Speaker 1: what's new with you? Oh, not too much, man, you know, father,
- 1:50Speaker 1: husband stuff. Last this this past Sunday, I got a
- 1:55Speaker 1: breakaway right from the family and I was able to
- 1:59Speaker 1: go out and hang my trail cameras. So they are
- 2:02Speaker 1: out there soaking collecting pictures hopefully. And uh, dude, I
- 2:07Speaker 1: don't know what it is that now, now that that
- 2:09Speaker 1: has happened, that's like a big first step for me,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and I know it is for a lot of guys.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Once you get those trail cameras out this time of year,
- 2:17Speaker 1: that's when for me it's the official start of the
- 2:21Speaker 1: upcoming season. Yeah. Yeah, this this time of year, like
- 2:24Speaker 1: you've got cameras are going out, you start seeing the
- 2:27Speaker 1: batchelor groups out in the fields. And then for me,
- 2:29Speaker 1: for whatever reason, when I start driving down the roads
- 2:32Speaker 1: and the corn and beans are high enough up that
- 2:35Speaker 1: there's no more dirt showing, like, it's just a sea
- 2:38Speaker 1: of green now. For for whatever reason, I was driving
- 2:40Speaker 1: down the road last night and I was just noticing that.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this is a new phase of the
- 2:45Speaker 1: year has officially started now that that's happening. Absolutely, I
- 2:50Speaker 1: just love it. Um, so you got the cameras out,
- 2:53Speaker 1: tell me, tell me, tell me all about how many
- 2:55Speaker 1: you get out? Would you put them in any new places?
- 2:57Speaker 1: This like your usual set up? What was yeah? Man,
- 3:00Speaker 1: just my usual setups. I mean every place that I
- 3:03Speaker 1: put a trail camera as of right now. Um, I've
- 3:08Speaker 1: had trail cameras there's in the past, right so these
- 3:10Speaker 1: are my pretty much my set in mineral stations where
- 3:14Speaker 1: I've had mineral there in the past. Uh, it's just
- 3:17Speaker 1: just now it's like bare dirt right there. Sometimes there's
- 3:20Speaker 1: even a hole there and put trail cameras over it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And that's what was it about a month ago, is
- 3:27Speaker 1: when I put the mineral out. So they've been hitting
- 3:29Speaker 1: it pretty hard and heavy, and uh, you know it's
- 3:33Speaker 1: not I mean, there's nothing really too exciting about going
- 3:36Speaker 1: out and putting up trail cameras except while I was out,
- 3:42Speaker 1: I jumped a stud buck. I really couldn't tell if
- 3:46Speaker 1: he was an eight, like if he was gonna be
- 3:48Speaker 1: an eight or if he was going to be a ten.
- 3:50Speaker 1: He's about three yards away, But all I saw was
- 3:53Speaker 1: he was wide, a ton of mass, which all bucks
- 3:57Speaker 1: this time of year looked like they're going to be massive, right,
- 3:59Speaker 1: But one thing I noticed is his brows. I'm not
- 4:03Speaker 1: joking when I say this. They could be like ten
- 4:05Speaker 1: inches ten inch brows good night. Yeah, so he was
- 4:09Speaker 1: a freaking stud even this time of year, you know,
- 4:14Speaker 1: by now. So so now I'm just like geeked out,
- 4:17Speaker 1: you know, trying to figure out. I went back looking
- 4:19Speaker 1: at all the old Trow camera pictures trying to figure
- 4:22Speaker 1: out what bucket could be if it was a buck
- 4:26Speaker 1: from last year. But um, there's a couple I think
- 4:29Speaker 1: that it could be. But you know, only time will
- 4:32Speaker 1: tell on that front. Did he have any time length
- 4:35Speaker 1: on like his his uh you know, the other times
- 4:38Speaker 1: other than the brow times yet or is it just
- 4:39Speaker 1: kind of main beams and brows at this point? Yeah,
- 4:42Speaker 1: it was main beams brows. I mean he had he
- 4:45Speaker 1: had G two's and what looked like G three's. Um,
- 4:50Speaker 1: but he was kind of angling away from me, and
- 4:52Speaker 1: then finally he turned and was running straight away from me,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and um, right in the middle of a bean field,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and uh, like he was wide open. I could see
- 5:01Speaker 1: him really good. It was sunny out. I just couldn't
- 5:04Speaker 1: see him from the side really or from head on,
- 5:07Speaker 1: but I could tell you he was already out past
- 5:09Speaker 1: his ears and he had good brows. So it's encouraging. Yeah,
- 5:14Speaker 1: so you've got camera locations around that area? Oh yeah, yep. Um,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I have this one particular. I think I've talked to
- 5:21Speaker 1: you about this before, but I have one particular trail
- 5:25Speaker 1: camera set up for the summer that gets gigantic deer
- 5:30Speaker 1: on it every single year. So like basically all the
- 5:34Speaker 1: deer um that almost all I'm gonna the bucks that
- 5:40Speaker 1: I will be hunting this fall will be on this
- 5:43Speaker 1: trail camera throughout the summer. And uh, it's just one
- 5:47Speaker 1: of those deals. Why do you think that is? Like
- 5:50Speaker 1: what is it about that location? Because I've had a
- 5:52Speaker 1: couple of spots like that too, where you could have
- 5:54Speaker 1: two trail cameras in the summer and they might be
- 5:57Speaker 1: just a hundred yards apart, and one of them is
- 5:59Speaker 1: just money and gets all the bucks and one of
- 6:02Speaker 1: them could be just a no man's land. What's this
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm curious what this spot is like? Um, and then
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'll describe my best summer camera location and I kind
- 6:12Speaker 1: of wonder if there's any similarities. Right, So, this is
- 6:16Speaker 1: in the middle of the field, dude, it's on a terrace,
- 6:19Speaker 1: to be honest with you, and it is but the
- 6:23Speaker 1: but from the road. For people that aren't like in
- 6:26Speaker 1: kind of hilly farmland, can you explain what you mean
- 6:28Speaker 1: by like this terrorist thing in the field. Yeah, So
- 6:31Speaker 1: farmers will terrace their fields. It's basically a natural retaining
- 6:35Speaker 1: wall to keep the like, to reduce the slope of
- 6:39Speaker 1: the land so there's not so much water erosion. When
- 6:45Speaker 1: it rains, it kind of slows everything down, maybe even
- 6:48Speaker 1: at times kind of kind of just drifts up a
- 6:50Speaker 1: little bit. But then it has a steep back wall
- 6:53Speaker 1: on it that they plant in grass, so there's no
- 6:56Speaker 1: erosion there. Hopefully that was an okay description that makes sense.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But yeah, so it's it's on this terrace with a
- 7:04Speaker 1: little strip of grass on either side of it, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm on the I'm on the high end of it.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And I'm telling you, right, now, man, it's it's crazy
- 7:12Speaker 1: because where the road goes right, the terrace is below
- 7:18Speaker 1: the road, so the deer can hang out there right.
- 7:23Speaker 1: First off, it's in corn right now, so there is
- 7:27Speaker 1: there's no you can't see you can't see anything from
- 7:30Speaker 1: the road anyway. Second, if it was in beans or whatever,
- 7:34Speaker 1: it would all be below the road, so you can't
- 7:38Speaker 1: see you know, you can't see the deer even if
- 7:40Speaker 1: they were there. So these deer feel really safe in
- 7:43Speaker 1: this area. I have a feeling because there is there's cover, um,
- 7:49Speaker 1: there is food, and there's water all in this one
- 7:53Speaker 1: little area. Now, when I say cover, I mean the
- 7:55Speaker 1: corn and some some taller grass mixed in with some
- 7:59Speaker 1: really or you know, scrubby trees. Nothing that you could
- 8:02Speaker 1: ever put a tree stand in. But I mean that's
- 8:05Speaker 1: this is where they hang out. And a lot of
- 8:07Speaker 1: the pictures are not turnal, so they're coming from someplace
- 8:11Speaker 1: else to hit this camera. Um some you know, throughout
- 8:15Speaker 1: the summer there there's probably going to be a you
- 8:19Speaker 1: know a couple of daylight pictures. But it's it's it's
- 8:23Speaker 1: a spot that I found on accident. Oh by the way,
- 8:26Speaker 1: same field where I found all my sheds in this year.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's that it's that field. So yeah, man, it's it's overlooked.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I think a lot of people would overlook areas like this,
- 8:39Speaker 1: not not I'm not saying hunters in my area, but
- 8:42Speaker 1: other hunters this time of year, deer don't need to
- 8:46Speaker 1: sit in the timber and wait because they got tons
- 8:49Speaker 1: of cover everywhere else in egg in the egg world anyway.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So this is your your main big farm, right m hm.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So when you get pictures of deer at this spot,
- 9:00Speaker 1: how far away do you how far away could you
- 9:03Speaker 1: potentially see these same bucks on different spots of this farm,
- 9:07Speaker 1: Like I'm wondering, Like, okay, imagine they dispersed. So in November,
- 9:10Speaker 1: do you ever get pictures of these same bucks, you
- 9:12Speaker 1: know on the totally opposite side, you know, three cores
- 9:14Speaker 1: of a mile away or something like that. Yeah, man, um,
- 9:17Speaker 1: So in the peak of the rut, when the trail
- 9:20Speaker 1: cameras are showing the most activity is when I will
- 9:24Speaker 1: get a buck. You know, these bucks cruising from one
- 9:27Speaker 1: end of the farm to the other, and there is
- 9:28Speaker 1: a little bit of a natural flow with the terrain,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, from from one side of the farm to
- 9:34Speaker 1: the other. But this particular spot. So imagine my farm
- 9:40Speaker 1: being a long rectangle just to make things easy, laid
- 9:44Speaker 1: down on its side, uh, running east and west. So
- 9:49Speaker 1: this this field is even further southeast of my east
- 9:55Speaker 1: side of the farm. So I have access to this field,
- 10:00Speaker 1: but it's not in the main farm, if that makes sense.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Not a part of the main farm. But but it's
- 10:06Speaker 1: like there's a road in another property in between them,
- 10:09Speaker 1: another farm like a field. So it's uh, dude, it's
- 10:13Speaker 1: it's just crazy how it works. When I stumbled upon
- 10:15Speaker 1: it one one year, I was I was just kind
- 10:18Speaker 1: of scouting. I went into I parked my truck, walked
- 10:21Speaker 1: through this corn field to get to this bean field,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I jumped like five decent size bucks. So I
- 10:28Speaker 1: don't mineral out, I put the trail cameras up, and
- 10:31Speaker 1: sure enough, that's where they all were. Man, is this
- 10:35Speaker 1: where you had that encounter during the hunting season with
- 10:38Speaker 1: that big nine pointer? Oh? Um, yeah, yep, And I
- 10:44Speaker 1: got got that on film, I believe ye yep, that's correct. Yeah, Okay,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I know exactly what we were talking about that I
- 10:50Speaker 1: thought that was this place, Um, but that that Yeah,
- 10:53Speaker 1: So it's interesting that this is the spot that's great
- 10:56Speaker 1: for the summer, but then also when I think you're
- 10:59Speaker 1: standing corn around it, it can be a decent spot
- 11:03Speaker 1: even during hunting season. Huh right, So this spot will
- 11:06Speaker 1: be good until the crops come out and then it's over.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Mm hmm. However, I guess I should. It's almost like
- 11:14Speaker 1: I say this, but then I have an example of
- 11:17Speaker 1: it not being right. So I had two mature bucks,
- 11:21Speaker 1: probably both four year old, one might have been three, uh,
- 11:24Speaker 1: cruising this field. This last year crops come out, it disappears. However,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the two years previous I had that big one seventy
- 11:34Speaker 1: t pointer that I believe I talked to you about.
- 11:38Speaker 1: He was he was working that field even after the
- 11:41Speaker 1: crops were out. So I guess it just depends on
- 11:45Speaker 1: where the does are at. Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So how many cameras totally you have out there? Now?
- 11:52Speaker 1: Let's see I have one too, three four, five, six,
- 11:58Speaker 1: six six out right now? And how many acres is
- 12:02Speaker 1: that that you're covering? Um, let's see we're looking at five. Well,
- 12:11Speaker 1: probably if you ever run more or is this usually
- 12:17Speaker 1: Like the reason I asked, I'm curious, like have you
- 12:20Speaker 1: found like is this your usual number, and do you
- 12:23Speaker 1: do you usually end up capturing like summer pictures of
- 12:25Speaker 1: all the main bucks that you'll see. Or yeah, for
- 12:28Speaker 1: the most part, I that that number on this amount
- 12:32Speaker 1: of acres is will get me a really good amount
- 12:37Speaker 1: of bucks I could go in. But here's the problem.
- 12:40Speaker 1: The way I could get some trail cameras closer to
- 12:46Speaker 1: certain parts of the farm, but then we start getting
- 12:49Speaker 1: into the whole is it too close to where I hunt?
- 12:52Speaker 1: And I don't want to take that risk. So I
- 12:55Speaker 1: don't even bother putting the um, you know, putting the
- 13:00Speaker 1: trail cameras there, because hey, I don't want to risk
- 13:02Speaker 1: it and getting in trouble and be The deer will
- 13:06Speaker 1: show up, Like the September is a huge shift, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: I think you've heard me talk about this on the farm, right,
- 13:13Speaker 1: So there's like a week in September, and then after
- 13:18Speaker 1: that it's like the second week of September, boom, there's
- 13:21Speaker 1: a gigantic shift and new deer come into the farm
- 13:26Speaker 1: and the deer that have been there all summer leave
- 13:29Speaker 1: and there's just a handful that are there both summer
- 13:31Speaker 1: and fall. But it is it's crazy, So it's not
- 13:35Speaker 1: like all of the deer. And when I used that
- 13:39Speaker 1: when I said earlier, I meant like four deer, right,
- 13:44Speaker 1: So four deer four bucks? Will you know, stick around
- 13:50Speaker 1: for the summer and then I'll be seeing those shooters
- 13:54Speaker 1: or the deer that I want to target on that
- 13:56Speaker 1: farm in the fall. So where's your where's your head
- 14:03Speaker 1: at for this year? Since you know, at the end
- 14:05Speaker 1: of last year, we you we usually have like our
- 14:08Speaker 1: debrief session after the hunt, after the season everything, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: now we've had some months now that we're looking forward
- 14:15Speaker 1: to the next one. I just saw you post something
- 14:17Speaker 1: about that bucket killed last year, um, and you know
- 14:21Speaker 1: people were talking about what age it was and all
- 14:23Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Where's your head at for this year? Now?
- 14:27Speaker 1: Are you do we have a target age? Do you
- 14:30Speaker 1: have any more thoughts anything different than how we were
- 14:32Speaker 1: six months ago? You know, I think I'm just gonna
- 14:37Speaker 1: go out and hunt, right, I'm not gonna I'm gonna
- 14:40Speaker 1: pass dear that I want to pass, and if one
- 14:42Speaker 1: comes by that I want to shoot, I'm gonna shoot it. Um.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I wish I could say I have a grand plan,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but here's what I will tell you. I've I've killed
- 14:52Speaker 1: deer two years in a row now, so I think
- 14:55Speaker 1: that it might be time to up the standards just
- 14:58Speaker 1: a little bit and go after some thing a little different.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Maybe maybe not, um but you know, I don't think
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm going to be afraid to eat my tag, my
- 15:07Speaker 1: buck tag this year, I'll put it that way. So
- 15:11Speaker 1: what does that mean? Five year old? Or you're trying
- 15:15Speaker 1: to find like a buck like certain antlers or what? No,
- 15:20Speaker 1: what's the next level for you? Then? So I'll tell
- 15:22Speaker 1: you this to two things that I'm thinking about right now.
- 15:26Speaker 1: There are two bucks on the property that I hunt
- 15:29Speaker 1: who for the past god knows how many years. I'm
- 15:32Speaker 1: gonna say I have five years worth the trail camera
- 15:35Speaker 1: pictures of them. They're nothing spectacular in the antler department.
- 15:39Speaker 1: They are spectacular in the size of their bodies, right,
- 15:43Speaker 1: just these gigantic bodied bucks I have five years. I'm
- 15:47Speaker 1: gonna say they're probably seven year old bucks. I really
- 15:51Speaker 1: want to find out where they live. I want to
- 15:53Speaker 1: find out how their access you know, where they're where
- 15:55Speaker 1: they're coming from. Um are they coming? I think they're
- 15:58Speaker 1: coming off different properties and hitting uh the property at nighttime?
- 16:03Speaker 1: Um So how am I gonna I really want to
- 16:07Speaker 1: try to find a way to intercept these two particular bucks,
- 16:11Speaker 1: find them, locate them, and try to hunt them if possible,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and that. Yeah, and then there is another buck that
- 16:21Speaker 1: is was a three year old last year. I'm I'm
- 16:23Speaker 1: thinking he was a three year old big ten and
- 16:26Speaker 1: if he just I don't know if he's a If
- 16:29Speaker 1: he was a one sixty ten pointer last year, I'm
- 16:32Speaker 1: really interested to see what he's gonna be like this
- 16:34Speaker 1: year as a four year old. So and he he
- 16:39Speaker 1: ran the gauntlet a couple of times as well, so
- 16:42Speaker 1: I want to locate him. And other than that, it's
- 16:44Speaker 1: just gonna be one of those things where if I'm
- 16:46Speaker 1: sitting in a tree and depending on my mood and
- 16:50Speaker 1: the deer I want to shoot walks by, I'm gonna
- 16:52Speaker 1: shoot a deer, right, I mean, either way, I'm gonna
- 16:55Speaker 1: be happy. Either way I'm gonna I'm hunting, so that's
- 16:59Speaker 1: a plus, or I'm not. I'm not in my cubicle,
- 17:01Speaker 1: so that's a win. What's the what's the store or
- 17:05Speaker 1: what's the deal with these too old bucks? You ever?
- 17:07Speaker 1: Have you ever seen them before? Or is just just
- 17:09Speaker 1: trail camera pictures over the last five years? Uh? Do
- 17:13Speaker 1: you call his deer or anything? Or how can I
- 17:16Speaker 1: remember these deer? Is there like the Big eight in
- 17:18Speaker 1: the Big ten? Or do you call it hes like
- 17:20Speaker 1: goofy or what? Well? One one buck is named dork, Okay,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I remember that. He do look he looks like a
- 17:27Speaker 1: pit bull, just like real stock. The other one kind
- 17:30Speaker 1: of does too. I feel like you've been talking about
- 17:32Speaker 1: this deer since I've known you. You've been mentioning this
- 17:34Speaker 1: deer Dork. He's been around forever. Yeah, man, I think
- 17:38Speaker 1: the first year. I mean, he could be even older
- 17:40Speaker 1: than seven. But he shows up every single year, and
- 17:44Speaker 1: every single year I can never locate him, right, So
- 17:50Speaker 1: either my trail cameras are in the wrong spot. I
- 17:53Speaker 1: think this, I think you Okay, let me back up.
- 17:56Speaker 1: You hear these stories, and I'm sure you've probably ran
- 17:58Speaker 1: into a scenario like this too, where you hear these
- 18:02Speaker 1: stories of these bucks that may not even find breeding
- 18:09Speaker 1: real interested. They're not interested in the rut, right They
- 18:13Speaker 1: You can't call to him, you can't, um, I don't know.
- 18:17Speaker 1: They won't visit food plots in the daytime. They're just
- 18:21Speaker 1: a super weary, old mature buck that does will not
- 18:27Speaker 1: fall for any tricks, you know what I mean. And
- 18:30Speaker 1: I think that's how this buck has made it. He
- 18:33Speaker 1: knows is he he probably has been sitting in the
- 18:36Speaker 1: same number of beds his entire life, and he's found
- 18:41Speaker 1: a routine that has kept him alive, and he's found
- 18:43Speaker 1: the exit routes that have kept him alive, and he
- 18:46Speaker 1: has maintained that and has been persistent with that his
- 18:50Speaker 1: whole life. And he's gonna die of old age, your sickness.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I think that's or want to come on, I mean,
- 18:57Speaker 1: I mean, but I want to find where or he lives.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I want to find how he's coming, even if it's
- 19:02Speaker 1: just a corner of the farm for a small period
- 19:06Speaker 1: of time out like, I want to find it. So
- 19:09Speaker 1: do you have like a game plan for how to
- 19:11Speaker 1: do this, like this September. You're gonna put cameras and
- 19:14Speaker 1: spots you never have before, or you're gonna do something different. Yep,
- 19:17Speaker 1: that's the goal, man, I have. I'm gonna put a
- 19:21Speaker 1: couple pictures or a couple of cameras in some wacky
- 19:25Speaker 1: places that have some minimal deer sign you know, I mean,
- 19:31Speaker 1: unless you're finding where these dear bed um it could
- 19:36Speaker 1: be on another farm where he's leaving most of his sign.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Then you know, it's it's kind of a crapshoot and
- 19:42Speaker 1: truick cameras will help me with that. But so basically,
- 19:46Speaker 1: here's what I want to do. I want to get
- 19:48Speaker 1: a a picture of him, just one picture of him,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and then I can start from there right and say, okay,
- 19:55Speaker 1: well here's coming through here at this time of day.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Now I can go back and I just go back
- 20:01Speaker 1: in just a little bit more to the property and
- 20:06Speaker 1: I don't know, I mean, And the other thing is
- 20:08Speaker 1: this buck could be right under my nose and just
- 20:12Speaker 1: has never been caught on other trail cameras, right, you know,
- 20:16Speaker 1: just taking a little bit different of a path every day.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Have have you ever got him hard Horn or is
- 20:22Speaker 1: it always just summer? Yeah, I've gotten him hard Horn.
- 20:27Speaker 1: He came through a pinch point about two years ago. Um,
- 20:31Speaker 1: nocturnal of course. UM. And then the other buck that
- 20:36Speaker 1: kind of fits the same description came through UM on
- 20:40Speaker 1: a trail leading to like the CRP field two years ago.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And then other than that, man, it's just kind of
- 20:49Speaker 1: random occurrences. Nothing and it's all been early October, but nocturnal.
- 20:54Speaker 1: So these deer could shift and go someplace else, but
- 20:59Speaker 1: crop rotation, and I think it's going to have a
- 21:01Speaker 1: lot to play with this, Like these deer show up
- 21:05Speaker 1: more on this particular crop rotation. So it's a corn here, yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 1: well it's I don't want to say it's a corner
- 21:14Speaker 1: or bean here. It's just how there's and there's corn
- 21:17Speaker 1: and beans all over the farms that I hunt. It's
- 21:20Speaker 1: just the there, the rotation that it's in this year
- 21:26Speaker 1: seems to have more deer on my property, gotcha. So
- 21:29Speaker 1: some something to do with where the certain corners to
- 21:34Speaker 1: betting areas or whatever. It might be some relationship between
- 21:37Speaker 1: the habitat and the food this way right. And the
- 21:41Speaker 1: other thing I'm really interested in about in this year
- 21:44Speaker 1: is that do you remember two years ago when they
- 21:48Speaker 1: cut the farm for timber? Yeah? I do. Is that
- 21:51Speaker 1: getting thick? Dude? It is gross thick like it is.
- 21:57Speaker 1: It is what whitetail hunters, bow hunters want to set
- 22:01Speaker 1: up down window. I'm telling you right now. It's just beautiful.
- 22:04Speaker 1: That's awesome. Mega betting area. Huh, just just stick and
- 22:09Speaker 1: there's trails like burrowed through it. And oh man, like
- 22:14Speaker 1: last year when I ended up when I was hit
- 22:18Speaker 1: when I my arrow hit the branch on that big
- 22:20Speaker 1: eight pointer. Like four four three year olds came out
- 22:24Speaker 1: that night. Uh no, the night before, and then the
- 22:29Speaker 1: night that I um ricocheted the arrow on that buck.
- 22:32Speaker 1: That was the next night. He came from the same place.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So it's a dough betting area just set up down
- 22:37Speaker 1: wind of it and wait, sounds money. Yeah, man, I'm excited.
- 22:42Speaker 1: What about you, man, I've been talking too much. Uh well,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean I've been doing some work
- 22:49Speaker 1: here on the southern Michigan property and then spend a
- 22:53Speaker 1: weekend up on the Northern Michigan property. Um so doing
- 22:58Speaker 1: work there the Ohio thing. As you know, that's that's gone.
- 23:02Speaker 1: So now I'm trying to figure out property this year too.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Which one does you lose? The one that killed my
- 23:07Speaker 1: buck off last year? Did you really? Yeah? That's Amer
- 23:12Speaker 1: the uh the farmer or the guy. The farmer passed
- 23:16Speaker 1: away right the sun uh is now kind of in
- 23:20Speaker 1: charge of it. And he said him and his son
- 23:23Speaker 1: are gonna hunt. And I said, hey, good luck. You know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: call me if you need to help dragging a deer
- 23:28Speaker 1: so to tell him to shoot everyone in two year
- 23:31Speaker 1: old they see, don't worry, just kidding, just kidding. No,
- 23:41Speaker 1: It's it's all cool though, man. I mean that's good
- 23:44Speaker 1: that they're gonna hunt their property. It's you know, it's uh,
- 23:49Speaker 1: I have other places I can hunt. And the other
- 23:51Speaker 1: hunter that was there and he's probably pissed that I
- 23:53Speaker 1: even came along, but I don't know. It kind of
- 23:58Speaker 1: is what it is. There's nothing when when someone tells
- 24:01Speaker 1: you yes, you can hunt there their farm and they
- 24:05Speaker 1: don't know that another hunter is there, uh, and then
- 24:09Speaker 1: I I say to the landowner, hey, man, um, there's
- 24:13Speaker 1: somebody else in there. And then that landowner doesn't know
- 24:16Speaker 1: who it is and says, hey, who are you? And
- 24:18Speaker 1: then then all that kind of Then I get kicked
- 24:21Speaker 1: off the farm, and he gets kicked off the farm.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So the farmer, so the farmer son and grandkid can hunt.
- 24:28Speaker 1: It sucks for everybody, but you know, at least these
- 24:31Speaker 1: guys will be actively hunting their farm this year. And
- 24:34Speaker 1: you had a fun you had a fun hunt there
- 24:36Speaker 1: last year at least, so yeah, absolutely absolute. Yeah as
- 24:39Speaker 1: far as me, I mean, the Ohio property is gone,
- 24:43Speaker 1: so um, I gotta figure out time to get down there.
- 24:45Speaker 1: And pull our stands and everything, but I don't know
- 24:48Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do. Um. I I've had a bunch
- 24:51Speaker 1: of offers actually to hunt in different places, like we did, uh.
- 24:56Speaker 1: We did a live Meat Eater podcast last week down
- 24:59Speaker 1: in Ohio, um with Ronella and those guys, and we
- 25:02Speaker 1: talked about this a little bit. Just mentioned the fact
- 25:04Speaker 1: that I used to hunt, that I hunt down there
- 25:06Speaker 1: and don't have a spot anymore. So I've had a
- 25:08Speaker 1: lot of people like reach out to me and offer
- 25:10Speaker 1: me places to hunt, which is amazing and I appreciate
- 25:12Speaker 1: so much. But you know how that is. I mean, um,
- 25:17Speaker 1: it's it's hard to to to go into something like
- 25:19Speaker 1: that without really knowing what you're getting into and without
- 25:21Speaker 1: knowing the people you know. So much of you know
- 25:25Speaker 1: of hunting a place, if you're gonna be hunting with
- 25:27Speaker 1: other people, so much of like your enjoyment of that
- 25:29Speaker 1: situation comes down to who they are and your relationship
- 25:32Speaker 1: and all those other intangibles. So it's really hard to
- 25:35Speaker 1: just kind of get into something without having that past relationships.
- 25:40Speaker 1: So I've always been pretty hesitant to ever do that. Um.
- 25:44Speaker 1: So I'm kind of hesitant to do anything like that.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Right now. So right now, I'm still kind of trying
- 25:48Speaker 1: to find my own my own deal. But um but
- 25:52Speaker 1: but who knows, maybe one of these things will pan out.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Um So maybe find new spot in Ohio. Maybe just
- 25:59Speaker 1: do something totally different. Um. I've been, you know, looking
- 26:02Speaker 1: at we talked about me trying to do that public
- 26:04Speaker 1: land North Dakota hunt. That's something that maybe maybe I
- 26:07Speaker 1: can fit that in now since I'm not going to
- 26:08Speaker 1: do the Ohio hunts like I usually do. Um is
- 26:12Speaker 1: that over the counter, Yeah, you know, Okay, Um, so
- 26:15Speaker 1: that's I don't know, I gotta figure stuff out on whatever.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But but right now as it is, I mean, I've
- 26:20Speaker 1: got an early season hunt in Montana and then Michigan
- 26:24Speaker 1: and that's it right now. So I'm kind of spare
- 26:28Speaker 1: sparse as far as my usual plans. But Michigan I've
- 26:30Speaker 1: got like a I've got more stuff in Michigan than
- 26:33Speaker 1: I usually do because I got that new big property. So,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you know, back behind the house. It's been kind of
- 26:40Speaker 1: just like habitat work so far, with you know, with
- 26:43Speaker 1: a with a baby and stuff with work lately, I
- 26:45Speaker 1: just haven't been able to do as much as I
- 26:47Speaker 1: wanted to do as far as like moving stands and stuff.
- 26:50Speaker 1: There's a bunch of changes I want to make, kind
- 26:52Speaker 1: of tweaks to some stand locations. I want to add
- 26:54Speaker 1: some cover on some spots. I gotta go and just
- 26:57Speaker 1: check straps and do all that usual stuff too. Um
- 27:00Speaker 1: And just based off of last year where I was
- 27:02Speaker 1: seeing Holy Field during the rut, I want to add
- 27:04Speaker 1: some more stands around these betting areas towards the far
- 27:07Speaker 1: east side of the property. So I'm gonna have to
- 27:09Speaker 1: do that though in in August, because I leave I
- 27:12Speaker 1: leave here for Montana shortly. Um. But I did do
- 27:15Speaker 1: some habitat stuff I've been maintaining, just keeping my food
- 27:18Speaker 1: plots maintained. I uh, you know, I talked about this
- 27:21Speaker 1: a little bit a couple of weeks ago, but got
- 27:23Speaker 1: got my food plot screen planted around one of these plots,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and um, I'm kind of changing the size and the
- 27:29Speaker 1: shape of that one a little bit. It used to
- 27:31Speaker 1: be sort of, um, he used to kind of look
- 27:34Speaker 1: like a pie, like a piece of pie, imagine like
- 27:36Speaker 1: a quarter of a pie. And in the uh, in
- 27:39Speaker 1: the inside corner of that, there's a local clover plot
- 27:42Speaker 1: and then the right the right half of the triangle.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Then there was the plot, and then there was a
- 27:47Speaker 1: gap or the kind of a section of grass in
- 27:50Speaker 1: the middle, like if you just slice that pie into
- 27:52Speaker 1: two pieces. And then the left side of it there
- 27:54Speaker 1: was another sectional plot. But you know, a couple of
- 27:56Speaker 1: years ago, I think I told you about this, Um,
- 27:59Speaker 1: the far left pie piece of that pie got overgrown
- 28:02Speaker 1: with weeds when I was gone for the summer one year. UM,
- 28:05Speaker 1: So this year, I'm kind of reclaiming that. But I'm
- 28:07Speaker 1: instead of like doing one big plot in there, I'm
- 28:09Speaker 1: kind of just like snaking through, um, like a thin
- 28:13Speaker 1: strip through it. So it's gonna be a bunch of
- 28:15Speaker 1: tall grass and brambles and stuff all around it, and
- 28:17Speaker 1: then just a narrow strip of food. It will kind
- 28:19Speaker 1: of weave its way around that, um and I think
- 28:22Speaker 1: that will pull some deer past my stand location a
- 28:24Speaker 1: little bit better. So, you know, just kind of doing
- 28:27Speaker 1: stuff like that, spraying, maintaining, checking on things. That's all
- 28:30Speaker 1: I've done on that property. Um. I haven't put up
- 28:34Speaker 1: cameras yet. I usually do. But so, how much have
- 28:40Speaker 1: you thought about Holy Field? Honestly, you know, not as
- 28:45Speaker 1: much as you might think. I mean, I thought about
- 28:48Speaker 1: I mean guessing I've thought about a good bit and
- 28:51Speaker 1: I've been looking for I've been driving around the roads
- 28:53Speaker 1: and scouting some fields here in the summer, And like
- 28:55Speaker 1: I told you a couple of weeks ago, I thought
- 28:57Speaker 1: I maybe saw him, And then the day after we
- 28:59Speaker 1: recorded that podcast, I saw him again. But then this
- 29:02Speaker 1: time I got I got a better look on him
- 29:05Speaker 1: with a spotting scope and I couldn't see a notch
- 29:07Speaker 1: in his ear for sure. So now I'm thinking, maybe
- 29:10Speaker 1: it's not him. Um, but man, it sure looked like
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, the brow times and the main beam sure
- 29:15Speaker 1: looked like it. So I don't know. Maybe maybe that
- 29:17Speaker 1: could heal up a little bit, so it's not quite
- 29:19Speaker 1: as it doesn't stand out quite as much as it
- 29:21Speaker 1: has in the past. Maybe that's possible. I don't know.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It's been it's been four years since I saw him
- 29:26Speaker 1: first get that injury, so that's possible. Um, But I
- 29:32Speaker 1: don't know. I mean, I I haven't been obsessing as much.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I did do some videos recently where I was kind
- 29:38Speaker 1: of going through, um, all my video stuff from last
- 29:42Speaker 1: year and kind of analyzing what I did right, what
- 29:45Speaker 1: I did wrong. So that got me thinking about some
- 29:47Speaker 1: of this a little bit, so I have been rethinking
- 29:48Speaker 1: how I want to tweak some stand locations. Um, but
- 29:51Speaker 1: so much of it with him in this property, there's
- 29:54Speaker 1: only so many decent spots I can hunt, And so
- 29:56Speaker 1: it's just a matter of okay, you know, just pick
- 29:59Speaker 1: the right one of these like four stands you can
- 30:01Speaker 1: hunt during the rut and make sure you've got the
- 30:04Speaker 1: conditions right and hope that he's going to come cruising
- 30:06Speaker 1: through without you messing it up. And just do the
- 30:08Speaker 1: stuff that I know I gotta do. And you know,
- 30:11Speaker 1: like we've talked, over the years, I've put myself in
- 30:13Speaker 1: a position where every year I've had a shot opportunity
- 30:16Speaker 1: at him. You know, the first two years I passed.
- 30:18Speaker 1: The third year I just wasn't ready for it. So
- 30:21Speaker 1: it's not necessarily a matter of me doing something dramatically different.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I think it's just a matter of me doing what
- 30:27Speaker 1: I know I need to do and executing on that
- 30:29Speaker 1: plan the right way. You know, don't take any shortcuts,
- 30:32Speaker 1: don't get lazy. Um. And if I do that, I
- 30:34Speaker 1: think I'll have a shot or two. Um, if he's
- 30:37Speaker 1: still in the air, I'll have an opportunity. Uh, just
- 30:39Speaker 1: a matter of if I can you know, take advantage
- 30:41Speaker 1: of it. So yeah, that's the Holy Field deal. But
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know that survivor buck he could piece hopefully back
- 30:47Speaker 1: and he I think will be a really cool deal
- 30:49Speaker 1: this year he'd be a four year old. And then
- 30:51Speaker 1: that mega giant that I saw at the end of
- 30:53Speaker 1: last year a couple of times. Uh, if he hangs
- 30:57Speaker 1: out on this property, that would be cool to see
- 31:00Speaker 1: because I haven't seen a Michigan buck like that before. Um,
- 31:04Speaker 1: So that's all exciting for this little spot here. And
- 31:06Speaker 1: then you know question question about your northern Michigan spot. Yeah, okay,
- 31:12Speaker 1: so you you got a picture of this drop time
- 31:14Speaker 1: buck there right, So you've done some habitat work there.
- 31:18Speaker 1: It looks like it's paid off as far as bringing
- 31:21Speaker 1: the uh, you know, some deer back into the area. Um,
- 31:27Speaker 1: has that habitat work you think directly impacted them the
- 31:33Speaker 1: age class of deer that's visiting that farm. So I
- 31:37Speaker 1: definitely think it's directly impacted stuff. If it has directly
- 31:42Speaker 1: impacted the age class, I don't know about that, but
- 31:44Speaker 1: what it has done, you know, it's it's such a
- 31:47Speaker 1: small property, just forty acres um and really the the
- 31:51Speaker 1: section of it that we can access to make any
- 31:53Speaker 1: changes is much smaller than that. I mean, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 1: the maybe the front twenty, the back twenty is just
- 32:01Speaker 1: kind of swamp in low grounds, so it's kind of
- 32:04Speaker 1: all wet and stuff. The front twenty part of that
- 32:06Speaker 1: has our cabin and the yard and like some pines.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And then so then maybe we're down now to about
- 32:13Speaker 1: ten acres where I could do some stuff. And of that,
- 32:16Speaker 1: you know, there's only a couple of acres that are
- 32:19Speaker 1: workable at all without having some major logging done or
- 32:23Speaker 1: someone coming with a doze or knockout trees, and we
- 32:25Speaker 1: just haven't been able to do that yet. So to
- 32:28Speaker 1: this point we have maybe an acre of openings made now. Um,
- 32:37Speaker 1: so it's not you know, sub substantial that we're changing
- 32:40Speaker 1: the nutritional output to a to a really heavy degree
- 32:44Speaker 1: or anything. But but what it does, what it has done,
- 32:47Speaker 1: is it created this focal point that we never had before.
- 32:51Speaker 1: So there's just no high quality food like this around
- 32:54Speaker 1: the area anywhere, at least you know, really close to
- 32:58Speaker 1: this property. Maybe maybe some I have heard some people
- 33:00Speaker 1: a neighbor of oursists said that such and such down
- 33:03Speaker 1: the road is plant some food plots. And there is
- 33:05Speaker 1: one crop field maybe a mile and a half away,
- 33:08Speaker 1: um that I've seen before, but um but otherwise there
- 33:11Speaker 1: just isn't this kind of food. So when you put in,
- 33:13Speaker 1: all of a sudden, a tasty, little green food source
- 33:16Speaker 1: like we have here, We've we kind of carved out
- 33:19Speaker 1: three little food plots. Kind of it's more so like
- 33:21Speaker 1: two because two of them are connected now, um, so
- 33:24Speaker 1: kind of one and a half food plots as suppose,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and planet oats and buckwheat and so it's just kind
- 33:31Speaker 1: of like this little ice cream section now that just
- 33:35Speaker 1: there's nothing like it. So we've got all of a sudden,
- 33:39Speaker 1: a couple of dough family groups that are hanging out
- 33:41Speaker 1: here consistently and consistently visiting this area that we never
- 33:45Speaker 1: had before. You know, I've told the story in the
- 33:47Speaker 1: past that we hardly ever saw a deer at all.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I mean, we would hunt and maybe one person would
- 33:52Speaker 1: see a deer or two for the whole you know,
- 33:55Speaker 1: we usually go up there opening weekend plus a handful
- 33:57Speaker 1: of day. So maybe we'll say four to five day
- 33:59Speaker 1: period that there's a group of guys up there, maybe
- 34:02Speaker 1: four to five guys, and we might just see a
- 34:05Speaker 1: couple of deer over the whole group. Um, and this
- 34:07Speaker 1: is hunting our property. Plus was a bunch of public
- 34:10Speaker 1: land all around it that we hunt to. So now
- 34:12Speaker 1: though we put in this food and now we're seeing
- 34:16Speaker 1: deer consistently at least so lots of doughs. I've never
- 34:20Speaker 1: seen does as consistently as we're seeing now, So that's awesome.
- 34:23Speaker 1: And now on camera we're starting to get mature bucks.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I think that's simply because now there's a consistent dope
- 34:29Speaker 1: population here, and now that there's a consistent group of
- 34:32Speaker 1: doughs that are hitting this food plot, there's a reason
- 34:35Speaker 1: for these mature bucks to come through and take a look.
- 34:37Speaker 1: And I think the reason why there's mature bucks now,
- 34:41Speaker 1: I'm sure there were always a mature bucker too in
- 34:44Speaker 1: the general area, because this is like some mega big
- 34:47Speaker 1: swamp country that people never get into. So I'm sure
- 34:50Speaker 1: that there's been some big old bucks that have made
- 34:52Speaker 1: it to old age that just because there's no one
- 34:54Speaker 1: out there getting to them. But we're kind of getting
- 34:57Speaker 1: those deer to come up towards our area now with
- 35:00Speaker 1: these doughs that are kind of readily available, and the
- 35:03Speaker 1: Antler point restrictions went into play three years ago, I
- 35:06Speaker 1: think or four years ago in this area, So now
- 35:09Speaker 1: a lot more of those year and a half old
- 35:10Speaker 1: bucks are getting passed on. So I just think you've
- 35:12Speaker 1: got more two year olds, which means eventually more three
- 35:14Speaker 1: year olds, which means yet more four year olds. Um.
- 35:17Speaker 1: And that has seemed to make an impact. So we're
- 35:20Speaker 1: seeing way more bucks that you know, fifteen years ago,
- 35:23Speaker 1: everyone would have been like, oh, it smokes, that's a
- 35:25Speaker 1: nice eight pointer and it was a two year old
- 35:26Speaker 1: eight pointer, um. But now we're actually seeing three year
- 35:29Speaker 1: olds and four year olds, which um, which is which
- 35:32Speaker 1: is like I am, I would be so excited if
- 35:35Speaker 1: I could kill a three year old buck on that property,
- 35:37Speaker 1: that would be you know, one of the best bucks
- 35:39Speaker 1: ever killed up there. And if I could do that,
- 35:41Speaker 1: that would be that would be the coolest thing possible.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Like then the top goal I could accomplish probably well,
- 35:49Speaker 1: it'd be right up there with killing holy Field would
- 35:51Speaker 1: be really close to being is satisfying as killing holy
- 35:54Speaker 1: Field would be just because the history have you know here,
- 35:57Speaker 1: and the kind of the low point that we're at
- 36:01Speaker 1: and how we've been able to kind of slowly improve it.
- 36:03Speaker 1: So there's so much more we could do. I feel
- 36:05Speaker 1: like if we could like hire a lagger to come
- 36:08Speaker 1: in and clear out a few more spots for us,
- 36:10Speaker 1: or if we could hire a guy with a doze
- 36:13Speaker 1: or to come and push open some areas, because because
- 36:15Speaker 1: the biggest thing is we just need food. We need edge,
- 36:18Speaker 1: and we need food. Because right now, I mean, before
- 36:20Speaker 1: we did anything, it's just basically a forty acre square
- 36:23Speaker 1: of thick pine trees and swamp, just no transition, no edge,
- 36:29Speaker 1: no features at all, just thick crap. And then that
- 36:33Speaker 1: continues on for fifteen acres in every other direction. Now,
- 36:36Speaker 1: all of a sudden, we've got some companies, We've got
- 36:38Speaker 1: some edge, um, we've got some different kind of food.
- 36:41Speaker 1: So you you all of a sudden start getting different
- 36:43Speaker 1: ways that the deer relate to it. You can start
- 36:46Speaker 1: anticipating how they might travel. So now you have an idea. Okay,
- 36:49Speaker 1: here's a couple of spots that these does do seem
- 36:50Speaker 1: to be betting in relation to this food. Here's how
- 36:53Speaker 1: they're coming in during the rout. It seems like we're
- 36:56Speaker 1: seeing the one or two mature bucks that have been
- 36:59Speaker 1: popping up like last year there was um, there was
- 37:03Speaker 1: one mature about the show up on camera. The year
- 37:05Speaker 1: before that there was two. UM, and then they seem
- 37:07Speaker 1: to be showing up during the ruts. So I don't
- 37:09Speaker 1: think we have anything that's living on us consistently yet,
- 37:11Speaker 1: but um, but each year during the first couple of
- 37:14Speaker 1: weeks in November and late October even they've been popping up.
- 37:18Speaker 1: So so yeah, this year we expanded it even more.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Again it's just a little forty and UM. You know,
- 37:28Speaker 1: this year we decided to try to expand it a
- 37:30Speaker 1: little bit more and just try to improve the quality
- 37:34Speaker 1: of the little food plot areas we have so far.
- 37:37Speaker 1: So we just opened up more of it, took out
- 37:39Speaker 1: more trees around the edges, just open up the candy
- 37:41Speaker 1: a little bit, put down more line. We were up there,
- 37:44Speaker 1: like I said, two weekends ago, so we did some cutting,
- 37:46Speaker 1: laid down a bunch more lime on it all again, um,
- 37:50Speaker 1: and then sprayed it so because of it, because of
- 37:53Speaker 1: the soil quality there and it's all pine trees around there,
- 37:55Speaker 1: it's very acidic soil. So I think now it's like
- 37:58Speaker 1: year three or four that we've been trying to improve
- 38:00Speaker 1: that soil quality that I think now finally we're gonna
- 38:02Speaker 1: be in a position that the pH level should be
- 38:06Speaker 1: high enough that we can probably start planning some other things.
- 38:09Speaker 1: So I might try planning some brassicas or clover um.
- 38:12Speaker 1: So yeah, I think, like I said, we might have
- 38:14Speaker 1: like an acre of food this year. That'll be great.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Gonna have some different stand locations kind of around that,
- 38:19Speaker 1: and maybe next year find a way to get some
- 38:22Speaker 1: some new sections carved out and kind of go from there.
- 38:25Speaker 1: But it's been you know, like I said, it's been
- 38:27Speaker 1: really cool to see out there. It's a fun it's
- 38:29Speaker 1: a fun it's a fun place to go even if
- 38:32Speaker 1: there weren't deer. And now that we're starting to have
- 38:34Speaker 1: a little bit more success or at least a little
- 38:36Speaker 1: more opportunity from the deer hunting perspective, that makes it,
- 38:39Speaker 1: you know, just that much more exciting. So my dad
- 38:41Speaker 1: and I were up there together and that was great,
- 38:43Speaker 1: and I mean, it was cool we were I don't
- 38:46Speaker 1: I don't think I told you this last time we chatted.
- 38:49Speaker 1: If we did, tell me, um, But we had a bonfire.
- 38:52Speaker 1: We're sitting by the bonfire next to the cabin, just
- 38:54Speaker 1: my dad and I talking, and it's just before dark,
- 38:57Speaker 1: you know, maybe a half hour four or five minutes
- 38:59Speaker 1: before arc. And we hear turkey gobble And this was
- 39:02Speaker 1: like June or sixteenth or seventeen, something like that, and
- 39:05Speaker 1: we're a turkey gobble off the distance. So then I
- 39:08Speaker 1: just start yelping with my mouth and he gobbles back,
- 39:12Speaker 1: and so I keep yelping and he gobbles back, and
- 39:14Speaker 1: over the next half hour I called in two gobblers
- 39:18Speaker 1: right almost to the edge of the yard, just yelping
- 39:20Speaker 1: it with my mouth in the middle of June. It
- 39:24Speaker 1: was awesome. Yeah, that was fun to have that happened
- 39:28Speaker 1: so late in the summer. I wouldn't have expected that.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Uh So, yeah, man, I'm I'm pumped about that. And
- 39:35Speaker 1: um that that's been the big project I've been working
- 39:37Speaker 1: on so far. So we'll come back in August after
- 39:41Speaker 1: my Montana trip and um, you know, put down, put
- 39:46Speaker 1: down some fertilizer, get him planted, just some stand locations,
- 39:50Speaker 1: and then I probably won't go Maybe I'll go back
- 39:52Speaker 1: once in Bohan in October and then we'll wait for
- 39:54Speaker 1: gun season in the middle of November to try to
- 39:57Speaker 1: hit it hard. So that's the game plan there. Alright,
- 40:02Speaker 1: let's take a quick break now to think our partners
- 40:04Speaker 1: at white Tail Properties, and as we've been doing every
- 40:06Speaker 1: couple of weeks here in the podcast, I want to
- 40:08Speaker 1: point out a helpful resource that white Tail Properties is
- 40:11Speaker 1: put together, which is their new video in this land
- 40:14Speaker 1: beat YouTube series they've been putting out, which features my
- 40:16Speaker 1: buddy Ben Harshin, who's a white Tail Properties land specialist,
- 40:19Speaker 1: and in this video he shares some great advice about
- 40:22Speaker 1: using maps to identify habitat and terrain funnels that will
- 40:25Speaker 1: serve as this kind of ideal rut hunting set up.
- 40:27Speaker 1: And what I really like about this video is that
- 40:30Speaker 1: it actually features an example and which Ben shows us
- 40:32Speaker 1: what the funnel looks like on a map, and what
- 40:34Speaker 1: it looks like in person from the ground, and then
- 40:36Speaker 1: finally what it looks like from an aerial drone perspective too.
- 40:39Speaker 1: So if you're still trying to wrap your head around
- 40:42Speaker 1: what we mean when we talk about funnels and pinch points,
- 40:45Speaker 1: this video will be a huge help. So if you're
- 40:47Speaker 1: interested in checking it out, you can head over to
- 40:49Speaker 1: the white Tail Properties YouTube channel and look for the
- 40:52Speaker 1: video titled Locating and Hunting Funnels. And now back to
- 40:56Speaker 1: the show I'm Jack, dude. I feel I feel really like,
- 41:02Speaker 1: I don't know, just energetic, not necessarily thinking I'm gonna
- 41:05Speaker 1: kill anything, but just like really excited to get back
- 41:08Speaker 1: in the stand or a hunt period this year. Man,
- 41:11Speaker 1: I agree with you. I got bad news to share, though.
- 41:15Speaker 1: That is kind of a downer that I want to
- 41:17Speaker 1: run past. You get your thoughts on this, um, can
- 41:20Speaker 1: I can I take you that direction? Okay, let's hear it, um, sir.
- 41:25Speaker 1: So chronic wasting disease. We yes, we um. We just
- 41:34Speaker 1: got word. Well, two things have happened. Number One, A
- 41:37Speaker 1: few weeks ago, the DNR came out with a new
- 41:41Speaker 1: set of proposed recommendations for managing CWD in Michigan. Now
- 41:47Speaker 1: um that they were proposing to our Natural Resources Council,
- 41:51Speaker 1: and their proposals we're pretty controversial, um, within the state
- 41:56Speaker 1: of Michigan. I want to get your thoughts on those.
- 41:58Speaker 1: But then, and with all that happening, most of them
- 42:03Speaker 1: where the c w D has been located to this
- 42:05Speaker 1: point has been north and northwest of where I hunt. UM,
- 42:10Speaker 1: handful of counties away, so nothing too close to home.
- 42:13Speaker 1: But just last week we got an email saying that
- 42:16Speaker 1: a CWD positive deer was found right here by us,
- 42:21Speaker 1: um in the county just north of me and so,
- 42:24Speaker 1: and it's a county where I do hunt as well.
- 42:26Speaker 1: So there is now c w D in one of
- 42:29Speaker 1: these counties that I do hunt in, and that you know,
- 42:31Speaker 1: my buddies like Corey and Dustin and those guys right
- 42:35Speaker 1: there right by them. Um. So that's just a huge
- 42:39Speaker 1: bummer that it's it's local now. Um. But that being said,
- 42:44Speaker 1: these new recommendations and new proposals, I'm curious such your
- 42:48Speaker 1: thoughts are on this. So this is what they're proposing
- 42:50Speaker 1: in Michigan. They're proposing to manage the state kind of
- 42:55Speaker 1: in two different zones. And not gonna paraphrase here, I
- 42:57Speaker 1: might not get the exact details right, So if you
- 42:59Speaker 1: live in Michigan, your interest in this, you should just
- 43:01Speaker 1: go to the d NR website and read the actual
- 43:03Speaker 1: proposal because I'll probably get the details wrong. But as
- 43:07Speaker 1: I remember it, Um, they're proposing a few things. They're
- 43:10Speaker 1: proposing that in the core c w D kind of
- 43:13Speaker 1: surveillance zone that they're calling this, I think this is
- 43:15Speaker 1: that the counties where CTB has been found. I think
- 43:18Speaker 1: that's five or six counties now UM. And then and
- 43:21Speaker 1: it might also then include the counties that touch those
- 43:25Speaker 1: UM in that zone. They're proposing that baiting be banned
- 43:29Speaker 1: right now immediately, so that would be you know, any baiting,
- 43:33Speaker 1: any minerals, anything like that. UM. They're proposing that they
- 43:37Speaker 1: will ban all um dear urine based lures and scents
- 43:44Speaker 1: UM that are like natural real dear urine unless they
- 43:48Speaker 1: are certified by the a t A. The a t
- 43:50Speaker 1: A has gotten like a new certification program that's trying
- 43:53Speaker 1: to certify c w D free deer farms and stuff.
- 43:56Speaker 1: So anything that doesn't get that certification, they're in a
- 43:58Speaker 1: band UM. And then here's the controversial ones. UM. They're
- 44:04Speaker 1: proposing a mid October gun hunt for doze, so opening
- 44:10Speaker 1: up a handful day gun hunt during the middle of
- 44:13Speaker 1: what would usually just be bow season UM. And then
- 44:16Speaker 1: they're recommending taking our muzzleloader season, which is about a
- 44:21Speaker 1: three week long period UM in December and just changing
- 44:25Speaker 1: that to a to any firearms season, so basically taking
- 44:28Speaker 1: our two week firearms season and expanding that to a
- 44:31Speaker 1: five week firearms season UM in that area. So that
- 44:37Speaker 1: has got a lot of people up in arms because
- 44:40Speaker 1: of the fact that you know, it's just gonna especially
- 44:42Speaker 1: for the people that have been trying to push for
- 44:45Speaker 1: some changes to management that might help, you know, increase
- 44:48Speaker 1: age structure and improve the quality of deer hunting in Michigan.
- 44:51Speaker 1: There's a lot of people that have been pushing for
- 44:52Speaker 1: things like antler point restrictions across the whole state. Um
- 44:56Speaker 1: and now they're seeing this as just being like, man,
- 44:58Speaker 1: this is gonna just destroy the quality of the of
- 45:00Speaker 1: the deer hunting here even more. Um So. Yeah, and
- 45:06Speaker 1: they're also banning things like, um some common sense things
- 45:09Speaker 1: like no transport. Well, some people are upset about this too.
- 45:12Speaker 1: They don't want to transport deer carcasses across county lines now,
- 45:15Speaker 1: so if you kill a deer in a CW deposit
- 45:18Speaker 1: of county, you're not supposed to move it outside of
- 45:21Speaker 1: that county. Um So. I think some people are worried
- 45:23Speaker 1: about how that's going to impact, you know, certain taxidermists
- 45:27Speaker 1: or deer processing stations and stuff like that. Since what
- 45:29Speaker 1: if you shoot a deer up north and you've gotta
- 45:31Speaker 1: take it home, You can't just go home the next day.
- 45:34Speaker 1: You have to do something with that deer. Um So, yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 1: that's that's what's happened. Now, there's been all sorts of
- 45:43Speaker 1: people up on arms about particular that gun season expansion
- 45:47Speaker 1: and having that gun season in the middle of October. UM. Now,
- 45:52Speaker 1: the Quality Deer Management Association UM, at least the local
- 45:55Speaker 1: branches and stuff here have been proposing kind of alternative,
- 46:00Speaker 1: which has been, hey, let's let's find ways to you know.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Definitely they support everything from um, you know, stopping the
- 46:08Speaker 1: transfer of caucusses to de baiting issues and things like that,
- 46:12Speaker 1: but rather than the increased gun seasons, they're saying, hey,
- 46:17Speaker 1: give us a bone, like, throw us a bone, throw
- 46:20Speaker 1: us some kind of incentive to help keep hunters excited
- 46:25Speaker 1: and engaged in this area, and we will kill more
- 46:27Speaker 1: doughes like because because a lot of these regulation changes,
- 46:30Speaker 1: like the increased firearm opportunities, basically it seems to be
- 46:34Speaker 1: that they're trying to get more does killed to reduce
- 46:36Speaker 1: deer density in these areas, to hopefully slow down the
- 46:39Speaker 1: spread at at a high level. I think that's what
- 46:41Speaker 1: they're trying to achieve with these proposals. So the alternative ideas, hey,
- 46:47Speaker 1: let's reduce the buck, the kill of yearling bucks by
- 46:51Speaker 1: introducing an antler point restriction here in these areas. So
- 46:54Speaker 1: so we will kill fewer bucks because we're gonna be
- 46:57Speaker 1: passing on those year and anfle bucks because the APRS.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But that will hopefully lead to an older or a
- 47:03Speaker 1: more balanced age structure. So that's like a carrot. That's
- 47:06Speaker 1: an incentive for a lot of deer hunters that want
- 47:07Speaker 1: to see better deer hunting opportunities in the state. But
- 47:10Speaker 1: that will lead to increased dough harvest because now we're
- 47:13Speaker 1: you know, we'll take more dough tags um additional maybe
- 47:17Speaker 1: archery dough seasons, or or simply because of the fact
- 47:19Speaker 1: that now we're not gonna be targeting quite as many
- 47:21Speaker 1: books will, you know, the difference will be met by
- 47:24Speaker 1: targeting more doughs. So that's this kind of alternative idea
- 47:28Speaker 1: that's been put out there, and that might be a
- 47:30Speaker 1: way to to keep hunter morale high. Um. The point
- 47:34Speaker 1: being that if you go in here and increase these
- 47:36Speaker 1: guns seasons, you're just gonna get people disheartened about how
- 47:40Speaker 1: deer hunting is shifting in this way, and you're not
- 47:42Speaker 1: going to get the hunter engagement. And if you don't
- 47:44Speaker 1: have the hunter high morale and hunter engagement. You know,
- 47:48Speaker 1: you're not going to get the action that you want anyways,
- 47:49Speaker 1: because if people are upset about the situation, they're not
- 47:51Speaker 1: gonna go kill these doughs the way you want them to,
- 47:53Speaker 1: and you're not going to get that outcome. Um. So
- 47:56Speaker 1: those are the two different kind of proposals that have
- 47:58Speaker 1: been thrown around here in the state. I don't know.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I don't know what's going to happen because cw just
- 48:06Speaker 1: keeps on popping up. So obviously, in my opinion and
- 48:09Speaker 1: in the opinion of the scientific community, the management community,
- 48:13Speaker 1: people have done the research, like CWD is something we
- 48:16Speaker 1: have to take seriously. It's it's not a government conspiracy.
- 48:18Speaker 1: It's it's not something um that the insurance companies are
- 48:22Speaker 1: trying to shove down our throat. Uh. Despite what you know,
- 48:25Speaker 1: some people are saying that that aren't actually involved in
- 48:28Speaker 1: this stuff. UM, So I think we need to take
- 48:31Speaker 1: it serious. Him. So you're telling me that when a
- 48:34Speaker 1: hunting celebrity comes on social media and and says a
- 48:39Speaker 1: rant about how c w D is a hoax, we
- 48:42Speaker 1: shouldn't believe them. Yeah, that's what I'm saying in out there, man.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'll tell you what There's been some frustrating stuff put
- 48:53Speaker 1: out into the world from Yeah, I'm not claiming myself
- 48:58Speaker 1: to be an expert at all, but I'm going to
- 49:00Speaker 1: trust the scientists, the biologists, the people that really understand this.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Those are gonna be the people that I take my
- 49:06Speaker 1: information from, not someone who is trying to film the
- 49:09Speaker 1: TV show about stuff or who wants to sell bait
- 49:13Speaker 1: and supplements or whatever. That's so frustrating to see that
- 49:17Speaker 1: kind of stuff put out in the world and confusing people,
- 49:20Speaker 1: and it's just not something that we can mess around with,
- 49:23Speaker 1: you know, right, Absolutely so, man, when it comes to
- 49:28Speaker 1: c w D, this is something that I I am like,
- 49:34Speaker 1: I have internal thoughts about, right, So, Like it sounds
- 49:38Speaker 1: to me that before I say that, let me say this.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I bet you if we tested every deer that was
- 49:46Speaker 1: killed throughout the United States, c w D would show
- 49:50Speaker 1: up in way more places than what it's currently at. Right. Yeah,
- 49:55Speaker 1: that's probably true. That sucks to say, but I have
- 49:58Speaker 1: a feeling it's it's it is. It's almost like one
- 50:02Speaker 1: of those zombie movies where you know where it expands,
- 50:07Speaker 1: and it expands fast because a deer exposed to I
- 50:12Speaker 1: mean dear. We know deer social we need no dear
- 50:15Speaker 1: travel and you know, they touch each other and they
- 50:19Speaker 1: eat off the same I don't know the same plants
- 50:22Speaker 1: and and food sources, and sniff and groom each other.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And you know, if a deer does that a mile
- 50:29Speaker 1: down the road to another deer, and that deer does that,
- 50:31Speaker 1: and that dear does that, it can snowball really fast.
- 50:34Speaker 1: So like, I just think that c w D is
- 50:39Speaker 1: going to be inevitable, and I think that it is
- 50:43Speaker 1: nature's way. And this is me no scientific background, ain't
- 50:47Speaker 1: no research or anything like that. This is just my opinion.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I think that nature is gonna take its course, and
- 50:55Speaker 1: if a deer gets c w D, it's either gonna
- 50:58Speaker 1: die quick where it's gonna die you know, later on
- 51:03Speaker 1: after it's well old and mature. Right, So I don't know.
- 51:09Speaker 1: I mean, it just seems to me like this is
- 51:11Speaker 1: nature's way of figuring things out. And the deer that
- 51:14Speaker 1: survived c w D and potentially don't get it or
- 51:18Speaker 1: recover from it, if that's even an option, you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: or you know, they they evolve from this, then the
- 51:25Speaker 1: deer herd will come back stronger and they'll beat it. Um.
- 51:30Speaker 1: But when it comes to like going out and saying, Okay,
- 51:35Speaker 1: well here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna shoot every
- 51:37Speaker 1: deer in sight, or we're going to um increase gun
- 51:43Speaker 1: seasons and stuff like that, I don't think that. Obviously,
- 51:48Speaker 1: the there's a lot of people that don't need to
- 51:51Speaker 1: be giving their opinion. And I think even that the
- 51:55Speaker 1: c w D world, like the people the scientists, don't
- 51:58Speaker 1: even know a lot about this yet. So when like
- 52:03Speaker 1: the state makes a decision based off of science that is,
- 52:08Speaker 1: it's there and we're showing a spread of c w D,
- 52:12Speaker 1: but we don't know about it yet, it just kind
- 52:16Speaker 1: of sucks to the hunter where they're making these these
- 52:19Speaker 1: big decisions based off of science, but not like proven
- 52:25Speaker 1: science yet. You know what I mean, I do hear
- 52:28Speaker 1: you're saying. I mean, I do know what you mean.
- 52:30Speaker 1: But but what's the alternative? Do we do nothing? I
- 52:33Speaker 1: don't know, man, I mean, if let's I guess, let's
- 52:37Speaker 1: walk through that once doing nothing and continuing hunting, and
- 52:41Speaker 1: you know, deer herds increase and decrease, you know, they
- 52:45Speaker 1: increase and decrease some you know, maybe winter kills them
- 52:48Speaker 1: or or something like that what does I mean, what
- 52:53Speaker 1: good does it do to have b w D? I mean,
- 52:59Speaker 1: do these these man ask killoffs if it's just gonna
- 53:02Speaker 1: it's gonna be around and it's gonna you know, I
- 53:06Speaker 1: don't know so many thoughts, you know what I mean.
- 53:10Speaker 1: I mean, I think you know, we we We've talked
- 53:12Speaker 1: to people that have talked through the the sign that
- 53:16Speaker 1: the long term implications. You know, it's yeah, in the
- 53:19Speaker 1: short term, there aren't gonna be major issues. But what
- 53:23Speaker 1: if we get to a point where we scot parts
- 53:26Speaker 1: of Wisconsin are getting now where in some areas something
- 53:28Speaker 1: like forty or fifty of all the bucks are CTBD positive.
- 53:33Speaker 1: And what if we get to that point where were
- 53:35Speaker 1: you hunt in Iowa it's like that, and where I
- 53:37Speaker 1: hunt here in Michigan it's like that. And now all
- 53:39Speaker 1: of a sudden, you know, we haven't seen it jump
- 53:42Speaker 1: to humans yet, but the Center for Disease Control doesn't
- 53:46Speaker 1: recommend you eat it because that's not acent for sure thing.
- 53:50Speaker 1: So what if now every other buck you kill you
- 53:54Speaker 1: can't eat? And what if you know, in Wyoming and
- 53:59Speaker 1: stuff where it's been known to be around for a
- 54:01Speaker 1: while longer, they are seeing population level declines because of CWD.
- 54:05Speaker 1: So what if we get to a point now where
- 54:08Speaker 1: and this might be twenty years from now, this might
- 54:09Speaker 1: be a long ways away. But what about when you know,
- 54:12Speaker 1: when Mac and Everett are hunting, you know, they can't
- 54:15Speaker 1: eat any of the bucks they kill, and they can't
- 54:19Speaker 1: you know, dear populations are going down by ten percent
- 54:22Speaker 1: every year, So that means we have to change our
- 54:23Speaker 1: hunter regulations. So now you can't get two buck tags
- 54:26Speaker 1: a year in Michigan because the population is going to
- 54:29Speaker 1: be going down. Or what if we find out that, yeah,
- 54:33Speaker 1: actually some percent of humans that have been eating deer
- 54:36Speaker 1: meat now are actually developing some kind of nervous system issues.
- 54:40Speaker 1: I mean there are I agree, like there's so many questions,
- 54:43Speaker 1: there's so many unknown still. But at the same time,
- 54:47Speaker 1: if we don't try to slow it at least or
- 54:49Speaker 1: do something, it just seems like the long term impacts
- 54:53Speaker 1: are are scary. So I don't know anything about You know,
- 54:56Speaker 1: Wisconsin is the kind of hotbed for this. Right they
- 54:59Speaker 1: went in when they had this, when the the c
- 55:03Speaker 1: w D first became prevalent. Right, they went in and
- 55:07Speaker 1: they destroyed the deer population. Right, they tried to wipe
- 55:09Speaker 1: it out as much as possible over time it had
- 55:14Speaker 1: it been kind of rebounded, right, But what I don't
- 55:17Speaker 1: know is are the deer in that area still c
- 55:23Speaker 1: w D positive. Sounds to me like they are, yeah,
- 55:27Speaker 1: But but here's the thing. What they did is that
- 55:29Speaker 1: they did a like the scurse. And again this is
- 55:34Speaker 1: me from the outside from what I've heard and read.
- 55:37Speaker 1: We're not professionals and we don't live and hunt there,
- 55:39Speaker 1: so I'm going to get some of the details probably wrong.
- 55:41Speaker 1: But as I understand the situation, right when they first
- 55:44Speaker 1: discovered cw D in the area, they did try like
- 55:47Speaker 1: the scorched Earth policy, where they tried to really knock
- 55:50Speaker 1: out the dear populations in these areas. They really aggressively
- 55:53Speaker 1: tried to you know, thin deer populations and do different
- 55:56Speaker 1: things like that. But then like five years ago or
- 55:59Speaker 1: six years or whatever, they decided to go the complete
- 56:03Speaker 1: opposite and they really like went hands off, like they're
- 56:06Speaker 1: gonna they monitored the CWD, but then they weren't doing
- 56:09Speaker 1: much in these areas whereas being found to try slow
- 56:12Speaker 1: the spread or do anything else, so they want the
- 56:14Speaker 1: exact opposite direction with it. Now, the last I don't
- 56:17Speaker 1: know how many years has been, but five six, seven,
- 56:19Speaker 1: something like that, UM to where they're not trying to
- 56:22Speaker 1: make any type of changes. Yes, to your point, CWD
- 56:27Speaker 1: is definitely still there. It is increasing. The the infection
- 56:32Speaker 1: rate seems to be higher and higher every year. It
- 56:34Speaker 1: seems to be that zone is growing out from that
- 56:36Speaker 1: hot spot. UM So, I don't know. I mean, I
- 56:40Speaker 1: don't know if if if the scorched earth policy that
- 56:42Speaker 1: they had for a while, if that slowed things down,
- 56:44Speaker 1: and if they kept doing something like that, maybe that
- 56:47Speaker 1: would keep it from spreading at the rate it is.
- 56:49Speaker 1: I don't know if that's the case or not. To
- 56:51Speaker 1: your point, though, I feel like the balance with this
- 56:54Speaker 1: and this is from a purely just as a hunter
- 56:56Speaker 1: stand standpoint, But I think from the way I see things,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I think we need to be doing as many common
- 57:04Speaker 1: sense things we can do to to reduce the spread
- 57:06Speaker 1: as much as possible, to slow the spread as much
- 57:09Speaker 1: as possible, um to at least keep things from getting
- 57:12Speaker 1: critical critically damaged until we learn something or find some
- 57:16Speaker 1: other solution that's going to help us, you know, stop
- 57:20Speaker 1: this thing in a more wholesale way. But but we
- 57:23Speaker 1: can't lose hunter engagement and moraile either, right, because so
- 57:28Speaker 1: if we start doing things that get hunters completely unengaged,
- 57:33Speaker 1: then we can't you know, we can't do any of
- 57:35Speaker 1: these things like thinning the deer population a little bit,
- 57:38Speaker 1: or getting people to even report their deer or get
- 57:40Speaker 1: their dear tested. Like if people are so frustrated, or
- 57:43Speaker 1: if people's deer hunting situations in their area are so
- 57:46Speaker 1: destroyed that they're not going to be part of it anymore,
- 57:49Speaker 1: then then you're not achieving anything else either. So there's
- 57:53Speaker 1: gotta be some kind of middle ground. I don't know
- 57:54Speaker 1: where that is, um where we need to take it. Seriously,
- 57:57Speaker 1: we need to learn more. We need to make sure
- 57:59Speaker 1: there's money and time and investment going into researching this.
- 58:02Speaker 1: We need to stop things that are spreading this around quickly,
- 58:06Speaker 1: like transporting deer all over the place and you know,
- 58:10Speaker 1: infect a deer getting loose out of captive facilities, or
- 58:13Speaker 1: killing a CTVD positive and Wisconsin and then bringing it
- 58:16Speaker 1: back to Wiscontin bringing back to Michigan and dropping it
- 58:18Speaker 1: in your backyard and then having a new hotspot there.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Like that kind of stuff that's like obvious. I feel
- 58:24Speaker 1: like it makes a whole lot of sense to knock
- 58:26Speaker 1: that out. Um the other stuff I know I've mentioned.
- 58:32Speaker 1: I mean I read an article a couple of days
- 58:34Speaker 1: ago last week about came out of the Pennsylvania State
- 58:39Speaker 1: or University of Pennsylvania or penn State or something like
- 58:42Speaker 1: that where they did the research and nine out of
- 58:47Speaker 1: eleven mineral stations UH tested positive for c w D
- 58:52Speaker 1: and wherever this research was done. So I think that
- 58:55Speaker 1: this year is going to be my last year using
- 59:00Speaker 1: mineral man that I literally was going to ask you
- 59:03Speaker 1: do it? Are we at the point now where that
- 59:07Speaker 1: the sypes of studies are showing that these mineral stations
- 59:09Speaker 1: or bait stations are disproportionately high areas of concentration for
- 59:13Speaker 1: this kind of thing? Yeah? Absolutely So do we have
- 59:16Speaker 1: a moral or or or have it or even like
- 59:19Speaker 1: a management obligation as hunters to say, you know what, Yeah,
- 59:24Speaker 1: these deer can get it in a lot of other
- 59:25Speaker 1: ways too, but this is one way that I can
- 59:27Speaker 1: reduce the chances are slow it in some ways. So,
- 59:29Speaker 1: even if it's not banned in my state, should we
- 59:32Speaker 1: stop doing it? So you're saying you would, yeah, I mean,
- 59:35Speaker 1: which is crazy? Right? Um? I feel it's my part.
- 59:40Speaker 1: I feel it's my responsibility because I am offering Dear
- 59:45Speaker 1: a concentrated place to meet, right, which which really sucks
- 59:52Speaker 1: because hundred yards from where my mineral stations are are
- 59:59Speaker 1: salt a lot locks for the cattle that the deer visit. Right,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: So if I'm not putting out mineral, the deer are
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: going to be going and getting that mineral from the
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: salt blocks and the mineral blocks that are being put
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: out in On the farms that I hunt, there's deer
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: tracks all over them along with a cattle. So I
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: gonna tell the farmer they shouldn't do it too. They're
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: going to tell you you're crazy. They don't care. Um,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: but I feel it's my responsibility. Even if it's just
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: a half of a half of a percent, it helps.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: I think. I think it's just my responsibility to do that. Yeah,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: I think. Um, I think it's something that people gotta
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: start thinking long and hard about. Um. It sucks, dude,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: because it's one of my favorite things to do. Oh
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and I'll tell you what. It's seriously impacts your ability
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: to capture summer trail cameras pictures because yeah, I can't.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: I can't bait or put mineral in Michigan anymore. And
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: it's really tough to get the concentration of pictures like
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: you can when you have that out there. I mean,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: it's dramatically different approach that I take now trying to
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: find you know, just setting up on a inside corner
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: of a bean field and hoping that some dey are
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: going to pass through their water source or trail crossing
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: or something like that. It's it's nothing like having a
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: trophy rock or whatever out there. But to your point,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I think it's it's something we gotta we gotta think about,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: because yeah, I mean, there we go. We got Illinois, right,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: so now we got Illinois. Didn't they banned mineral stations
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: or a while ago? Right? So yeah, it's been it's
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: been banned for a while. But now people are trying
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: to trying to get it reversed. Yeah. The people who
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: are trying to reverse it are the are the people
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: who own I think I want to say biologic, right,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I don't. I don't. I haven't heard about that because
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: that's most yoke um, not MASSIOK. But someone who's got
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: supplements companies, Yeah, a company that has supplements is trying
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: to reintroduce it, and their whole push is um the
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: deer need our supplements because they're unhealthy. So the more
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: healthy that they are, they are, you know, they may
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: be able to fight this, which you know is it
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: is an okay you know, is an okay reason. Right.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: If you think that your mineral provides um uh nutrition
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: to deer, then that would be good to help them
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: fight disease. But this disease attacks strong, healthy animals, right, Yeah,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: you can get anyone. Yeah, yeah, I don't know, man,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I if they can show me the science that says
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: that no way is our bait states and these types
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: of deals impacting this the spread of the disease. But
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I haven't seen anything like that yet. All the all
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the research, all the biologists, the experts on this that
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: you know that don't work for a deer hunting community.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: But the people that work, you know, for the USGS
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: and stuff like that, like the ones that don't have
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: some kind of weird incentive pushing them one way or another,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: they're the ones pointing to the fact that, yeah, this
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: this stuff is an issue. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: put my faith in that. On a positive note, I
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: do have faith that science and the hunting community will
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: work together to help either like reduce this or solve
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: this problem. I I just have a feeling that there's
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: going to be a breakthrough because of how many how
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: much dear means to people. Yeah, I think there's gonna
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: be something positive come out of all this, and in
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: the long run we may suffer short term, but at
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: the end of the day, I think years down the
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: road there's going to be there's going to be I
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: don't know if it's going to be a cure, but
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: a solution. Yeah, yeah, I hope you're right. I think
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I think you know, I like your optimistic view on
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: it too, And probably so if that's the case, if
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: we're really hoping that something like that could be the case.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: It seems like probably the weak link right now is
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: research because the charts I've seen recently have shown the
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: funding that has been devoted to research and CWT has
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: just gone down the tubes as of a few years ago,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: because there's like a bunch of grants that were given
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: back when it was first shown, when it first popped
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: up in the early two thousands, and that money ran out,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and so recently I think there's not been very much funding.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: UM So I think we as a hunting community need
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to get behind different proposals to start getting some dollars
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: put towards more research to to try to find those
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: kinds of solutions. And I know that I know that
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: there was something proposed earlier this year, a bill proposing
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: some kind of um serious funding being granted to that
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: kind of thing. So I think when those when um,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: when specific legislation has put out there that we hear about,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: we definitely need to push that, talk about it, get
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: people on board, to get our representatives behind it. Absolutely,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: that's always a rent rent on topic. Though I know
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: it sucks. Let's end this positive. Let's end on a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: on a positive note. I'm leaving for Montana. I know
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I'm jack for you because again I'll be living through
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: your Instagram pictures and the pictures that you send me
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: to be basically, you're being a dick to me. You
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: send me those pictures like, hey, look where I'm at
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: and you're not. Have you have you taken your kids camping?
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Do you have any advice for me? Because this is
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: he's five months old, We're taken off for five weeks
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: right now, I've never taken my kid camping, right, But
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: here's what I will tell you. On trips like that,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: you have either got to get them asleep or you
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: have to keep them occupied. I don't care how old
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: they are. Right, So he's five months old. So what
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: are his favorite things right now? Um? Boobs and probably
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: a mirror so if you can so he'll look at it,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: or a pacifier or something, you know what I mean.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Just like, so get him, maybe keep him up a
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: little bit, make your night suck a little bit, uh,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: and then put him in the car sheet so when
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: you take off he sleeps, or drive when you're driving
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: out there, that's gonna be the suckiest part of it all.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I'm worried about. Right, So maybe maybe you or your
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: wife sleep during the day, you know, try to alter
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: go to bed earlier, or go to bed late, however
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: you want to do it, and then drive through the
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: night so he sleeps on a regular routine and he's
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: not you know, during the day, he's not crying and
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: have to stop and then feed him and then wait,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: stop and change diapers and all that stuff you can
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: you know, and then there's been a drill. I mean,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: that's always an option as well. Do they have baby
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: bene drill? Oh? Yeah, you can give a baby ben
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: a drill just a little bit, but you don't want
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: to overdo it. I'm probably not going to do that,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: but I don't. I was just gonna say, don't do
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: that advice. But your advice about driving through the night,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: that is a good idea, and it's something we were
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: thinking about. We're we're talking about maybe like just like
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: leaving it like two in the morning or something like
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: just super early. So that um, so that to your point,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: he'll sleep for seven hours or something before he gets up,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: because I because I was worried, Like, man, you know,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: every couple of hours he wants to eat, and every
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: few hours he has to get his diaper changed. And
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: so every time we have to do that, you know
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: that means you have to stop, pull off, take him
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: out his carci do that whole deal. I mean that
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: could really slow slow things down. I might want to
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: be worried about and not. This isn't to go back
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: to Debbie Downer road again. Is elevation, right, You're gonna
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: be at a higher elevation and it could play havoc
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: on his ears. Yeah, I hadn't really thought about that
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: too much, but a little there's something you can do
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: to babies to help them get used to that. Not
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: to look into that, because yeah, I mean, we'll be
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: going to even down in the valleys. You know, that's
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: even that's still five thousand feet of elevation or something.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: So it's gonna be it's gonna be an adventure and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it's going to be different. I don't know what we're
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: gonna be able to do. I don't know what how.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: You know. One of the big issues. We weren't camping
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: this past weekend with him, just to kind of test
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the waters here locally, and what we didn't even think
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: about was just, you know, trying to keep him asleep,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: you know, when he goes down for naps or usually
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: we put him down to bed before we go to bed,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: but that's in this little twenty ft box that everything's in,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: so it's not he has a separate bedroom where he
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: can go and not be woke up by us. But
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: it's all in the same place though, So if we
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: want to go in and cook, or if we have
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: to go in and do anything, or if we're coming
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: in and out to go to bed, and we have
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: two dogs, one of which is this big black lab
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: who's really loud whenever he's in there, his tails smacking things,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: his feet are scratching. I mean, there's no way to
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: quietly get in and out of there. So I don't
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: know what we're gonna do for sleeping. It's it's gonna
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: be like I'm just imagining the worst case scenario in
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: my head right now, and I just imagine about oh
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: two weeks, you and your wife are gonna look at
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: each other. You're going to be fighting with each other,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: but you don't know what you're going to be fighting about.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: And it's because your child is continuously crying. And we're
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: gonna say, why don't we just go back to Michigan.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: That could that could happen, And like we we even
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: like we even have talked about that. We're gonna be flexible.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: You know, if it ends up being a disaster, then
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: all right, we're just gonna call it. But but hopefully
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: we can, you know, hopefully we have a good time
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: out there and do some basic hikes and just you know,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: enjoy the western scenery a little bit. Show him a
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: buffalo and h a grizzly bear, from the road maybe, Um,
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: so I added from the road. Yeah, who knows. We're
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: gonna trying to We're trying to take him on some hikes.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: We got the baby backpack thing for him, so we're
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: gonna try to do a backpacking trip with him. See
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: how that goes. Um, So, yeah, it's gonna be an
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: education in what parent life is like on the road.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: I'll report back to you in the coming weeks. Yeah,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: I'm I think next summer is going to be a
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: family Colorado trip. So, um, I might even be taking
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: some advice from you as well. Yeah, man, I think
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: it's just gonna be so cool. I can't wait till
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: he's as old as his a mac when I'm you know,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: at that age, they're going to really, you know, get
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: excited about stuff and see you know, an elk or
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the mountains and you know flip out. Yeah like that.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: That just seems so exciting, all new world, man, Marcus
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: macus potty trained. That's exciting. That's huge. So you're you're
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: down to just one in diapers. Well he still wears
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: a pull up to bed right at night? Yeah, well
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: he can't. He can't really wipe his butt that good yet.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: But when he's awake throughout the day, no problems, that's
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: gotta that's gotta be a great relief. One less diaper, dude,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: it's a big thing. It's like I almost feel like
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: I should celebrate with my wife congratulations. I uh yeah, kids, man,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: it's been awesome so far, you know, the first five months.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: You know, we've talked about a few times before, but
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: it's it's just been amazing. He's been easier to handle
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: than I expected. Like he's just been a happy baby,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: a great sleeper, all those things have been great. But yeah,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: I got lucky. But the big test, the big test
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: is still to come this trip and then hunting season.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: So yeah, what are you gonna carry him around for
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: like a four week hunt? You're gonna take him in
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: the tree standing with you like that kind of test. Yeah. Man,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna try the new saddle hunting thing and he's
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: gonna be in the front pack, and uh, that'll make
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: for some good videos. Right. Oh yeah, man, Well, I'm
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: glad we got some time just to catch up. It's uh,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: it's increasingly harder to do with kids and work, and
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: so thanks for making the BS session here, buddy. Hey man,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: anytime any any final things we got cover for shut
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: this one down? Not really, man Um. The other day
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: I was going out and checking the mail and I
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: had to stop pop in my head like, man, I
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: haven't had spaghettios in a long time, and I just
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: really wanted spaghettios. I haven't had him yet, but in
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the next couple of days, my goal is to go
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: to the store get a ken of spaghettios. Man, that
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: that's riveting stuff. And you asked, man, I did ask
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: why what made you think that when you were going
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: out to get the mail, Like what triggered spaghettios while
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: getting the mail? You know, I think, dude, abstract, random,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: very abstract. Do you remember that one time that you
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: went into your kitchen, you opened up a cabinet door,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: you grabbed a can of food out of it, You
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: started eating it and you later realized that was dog food. Yeah,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: it was only one bite. You make it sound like
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I ate for a container before I realized that there's
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: only one bite that you know, when anyone asked me like, so,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: what's this Dan Johnson guy, like, I'm just I just
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: tell him that story and that's that's all that needs
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: to be said dude eight dog fed one eight and
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: then talked about it on a podcast He admitted to it. Yeah,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I think she's a dumbass. That's that's your most admirable
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: characteristic right there, Dan, You just put it all out there.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Thanks man, I appreciate someone's got to do it. That's true. Alright, dude.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Well good chatting, and um, next time we talk, I
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: will be able to tell you how Baby Adventure one
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: point oh has gone. And that's at first today, folks,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: So thank you for tuning in. Happy fourth of July
