- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah me too. This is the podcast that comes after
- 0:10Speaker 2: the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland
- 0:29Speaker 1: bonus episode, a little thing we like to call the
- 0:32Speaker 1: after party. This is the show after the show, the
- 0:34Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 0:36Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other.
- 0:37Speaker 2: The backyard, to dig into the dirt, our mission.
- 0:40Speaker 1: To uncover the truth, to confront the myth, to reclaim
- 0:43Speaker 1: the story. On this bonus episode, we were talking about
- 0:45Speaker 1: old Dirty Bastard and the body in the trunk of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the car allegedly registered to a modern day hip hop artist.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We're rewinding back to our dimebag Daryl from Pantera episode
- 0:55Speaker 1: previewing next week's led Zeppelin in the Haunting of Headley
- 0:58Speaker 1: Grange Part two episode we get into your voicemails, text, dms,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. This is
- 1:04Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:07Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want
- 1:13Speaker 1: told the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All Right,
- 1:16Speaker 1: this goes, let's get into it. Balance in life is key.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Too much of anything is harmful. I love the Beatles,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and there was a time in my life when I
- 1:40Speaker 1: loved smoking grass. But if I locked myself in my
- 1:44Speaker 1: room all day, every day and did nothing but bong
- 1:46Speaker 1: hits and listened to John Paul Jorgian Ringo, the results.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Would not be good.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And I'm not saying I'd emerge from my bedroom all
- 1:52Speaker 1: googly eyed with ideas about Armageddon, race wars like Crazy Charlie.
- 1:58Speaker 3: No.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That would require much more than just weed. That would
- 2:01Speaker 1: also require LSD DMT. My overall point, however, I believe, holds.
- 2:07Speaker 1: If all I did was listened to the Beatles and
- 2:10Speaker 1: do drugs, I'd have less of a perspective on music,
- 2:13Speaker 1: on life, on whatever.
- 2:15Speaker 2: This is obvious. I don't have to tell you this.
- 2:18Speaker 2: If all I did, If I did all I.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Did was help, If what I was doing all the
- 2:22Speaker 1: time was healthy, If I was just lifting weights all
- 2:24Speaker 1: the time and eating protein, those things in excess wouldn't
- 2:28Speaker 1: be good either.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You need balance, Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 1: If all I did was watch Violent Gangster movies and
- 2:34Speaker 1: eat popcorn wishes, basically all I really want to do
- 2:36Speaker 1: in life. I'd have a warped view on society and
- 2:39Speaker 1: probably a little bit thicker. I'd be a little bit
- 2:41Speaker 1: thicker around the waist. You need balance. If all I
- 2:43Speaker 1: did was talking to this microphone to you guys and
- 2:45Speaker 1: write and record stories about crazy musicians and ignore my
- 2:48Speaker 1: wife and my kids in the process, I'd probably be
- 2:51Speaker 1: more successful, but I would also be less happy in life.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Balance Balance, Balance balance. A couple of years ago, a
- 2:59Speaker 1: teenage from Houston decided to make his own music to
- 3:03Speaker 1: accompany the YouTube videos that he was creating, videos that
- 3:07Speaker 1: were gaming montages displaying his Fortnite skills. Fortnite was his obsession.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Music was secondary, but soon that unhealthy obsession with video
- 3:19Speaker 1: games was transferred somewhat to music, and music became the
- 3:23Speaker 1: thing for this young gamer. He released a song on
- 3:27Speaker 1: TikTok and that song blew up, and then another and
- 3:30Speaker 1: that song blew up, and within no time he was
- 3:32Speaker 1: signed to Interscope Records. Now he has this burgeoning career,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and he took his foot off the gas a little bit,
- 3:39Speaker 1: reignited his first passion gaming while making music. The artist
- 3:44Speaker 1: never really abandoned his love for gaming, specifically for Fortnite,
- 3:48Speaker 1: a violent but not gory game for cartoonist shooting. I've
- 3:54Speaker 1: never played Fortnite, but for those of you who have,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I'm not entirely accurate, I apologize, but I did
- 4:01Speaker 1: look into this today and I wanted to give you
- 4:02Speaker 1: an accurate depiction of this. For those of you who
- 4:05Speaker 1: don't know, Fortnite a lot of violence, but it's cartoonish.
- 4:09Speaker 2: It's not gory.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Certainly, there are other video games that go way further
- 4:13Speaker 1: with the violence than Fortnite. Fortnite is a game where
- 4:16Speaker 1: cartoonish shooting and combat are at the center of the
- 4:20Speaker 1: gamer's action.
- 4:21Speaker 2: The game is known.
- 4:22Speaker 1: To be highly quote unquote addictive. Okay, now, for we're
- 4:26Speaker 1: to believe some of the parents who allow their kids
- 4:28Speaker 1: to play Fortnite, and those parents who have raised concerns
- 4:32Speaker 1: about their kids being consumed by the game, addictive is
- 4:36Speaker 1: an understatement. Online, there are numerous stories about kids completely
- 4:41Speaker 1: disconnecting from not only their parents but from reality over
- 4:46Speaker 1: their obsession with the game Fortnite. Kids so addicted that
- 4:50Speaker 1: they literally cannot disconnect. They stop showering, they stop sleeping,
- 4:55Speaker 1: they stop eating. I am not a psychologist, I'm not
- 4:59Speaker 1: pretending to be, but you look, just go online look
- 5:01Speaker 1: this stuff up. Many have chimed in. There's lots of
- 5:04Speaker 1: online videos from psychologists, from people in the medical field
- 5:09Speaker 1: on the subject of the harmful nature of obsessive gaming.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sit here and tell you video games
- 5:16Speaker 1: are all baptism. That's not what I'm doing. Okay, again,
- 5:19Speaker 1: it's about balance and my point, my larger point is
- 5:22Speaker 1: this is specifically about Fortnite. So after hours upon hours
- 5:27Speaker 1: of violently eliminating, you know, understandably in a nongory way,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but still eliminating your enemies, it's not hard to imagine
- 5:37Speaker 1: a twisted reality presenting itself to the gamer. I spent
- 5:44Speaker 1: last weekend more. I spent four days more than the
- 5:46Speaker 1: weekend reorganizing my entire record collection. Every free moment I
- 5:50Speaker 1: had was spent alphabetizing records, staring at records, moving records around,
- 5:55Speaker 1: flipping through records, picking records up, putting records down, putting
- 5:59Speaker 1: records on show. I was taking the offshells.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Records, records, records, records, records.
- 6:02Speaker 1: When I went to bed at night and closed my eyes,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I literally saw vinyl. Okay, you know what I'm talking about.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Those of you who have worked on assembly lines, those
- 6:10Speaker 1: of you who have done tedious jobs, you know, as
- 6:14Speaker 1: part of your hobby or part of your labor, whatever
- 6:16Speaker 1: it is. You know, when you do something over and
- 6:18Speaker 1: over and over and over again, physically, you close your eyes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: that's what you see. The brain is impressionable. The brain
- 6:26Speaker 1: is fragile. The teenage brain is not yet fully formed.
- 6:31Speaker 1: The teenage artist that I'm referring to here, the one
- 6:35Speaker 1: obsessed with Fortnite. His name is David spelled D four
- 6:40Speaker 1: the Numeral four D four VD. In twenty twenty two,
- 6:45Speaker 1: at the age of seventeen, David took a break from
- 6:47Speaker 1: gaming and allegedly started dating a twelve year old named
- 6:52Speaker 1: Celeste Reeves. He also released a song that blew up
- 6:56Speaker 1: online at the same time, called Romantic Homicide. The lyrics go,
- 7:00Speaker 1: in the back of my mind, I killed you and
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't even regret it. I can't believe I said it,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but it's true.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I hate you. A video for.
- 7:09Speaker 1: This song was released on Celeste Reevas's birthday, September seventh.
- 7:16Speaker 1: In April twenty twenty four, then fifteen year old Celeste
- 7:21Speaker 1: Revs went missing. David continued with his career, releasing an
- 7:27Speaker 1: album in the earlier part of this year twenty twenty five,
- 7:31Speaker 1: through Interscope, and touring a couple weeks ago this month.
- 7:36Speaker 1: In September of twenty twenty five, two towyard employees out
- 7:41Speaker 1: in Los Angeles walked past an impounded tesla and noticed
- 7:45Speaker 1: a strong futrid smell. Authorities were called. The front truck
- 7:50Speaker 1: of the tesla was opened up and inside were the
- 7:53Speaker 1: dismembered remains of the missing fifteen year old Celeste Revs
- 7:59Speaker 1: the car. It has been reported that the car was
- 8:03Speaker 1: registered to David. Now David is cooperating with the police,
- 8:09Speaker 1: but the Internet is not cooperating with David. His alleged
- 8:15Speaker 1: online discord chats, some alleged to be with Celeste or
- 8:20Speaker 1: about a Celeste, have gone public. I can't verify if
- 8:25Speaker 1: they're true or not. I'm not going to speculate here,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but hey, you're free to search this up online. They're
- 8:30Speaker 1: easy to find. It was also discovered by online quote
- 8:36Speaker 1: unquote Sluice that David has an unreleased song allegedly and
- 8:41Speaker 1: its title is Celeste. And it's been reported that Celeste's
- 8:46Speaker 1: mother has verified that her now deceased fifteen year old
- 8:50Speaker 1: daughter had the same tattoo on her finger as David.
- 8:54Speaker 1: That tattoo reads shh. I don't know if this guy
- 9:02Speaker 1: David had anything to do with celest Revas's death, but
- 9:06Speaker 1: I know that we're going to find out soon. And
- 9:09Speaker 1: if David is responsible for the cruel and callous and
- 9:13Speaker 1: to celest Reevas's life, there's no telling yet why or
- 9:18Speaker 1: how something like this could happen. But in these early days,
- 9:23Speaker 1: this case reminds me of the Aaron Hernandez case, the
- 9:27Speaker 1: former New England patriot whose brain was so scrambled from
- 9:32Speaker 1: PCP and weed that he turned himself into a homicidal sociopath.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I was there when this news broke up in Boston.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. It was truly unbelievable. You just couldn't
- 9:47Speaker 1: understand it. And now it's understandable because we've learned about
- 9:51Speaker 1: his life. We learned about the drugs he was taking,
- 9:54Speaker 1: we learned about the concussion stuff, the ct all that.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And there's something about how this story about Celeste Reevus
- 10:04Speaker 1: and David is unfolding that that just brings me back
- 10:07Speaker 1: to those days. I don't know why Celeste Revs was killed.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I don't know if anybody knows why besides the killer
- 10:16Speaker 1: right now. And like I said, I have no idea
- 10:20Speaker 1: if all this information that's out there right now adds
- 10:24Speaker 1: up to this guy David being responsible. I don't know
- 10:30Speaker 1: what could compel somebody to do something like this. Even
- 10:33Speaker 1: after all this time researching these episodes, trying to understand
- 10:36Speaker 1: this behavior, I'm left coolest. Some murderers, I suppose, are
- 10:41Speaker 1: just born bad. They're just born that way. There's evil,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and evil is sometimes like water, it finds its way.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I truly believe that. But I also believe that sometimes
- 10:53Speaker 1: outside influences impress upon the brain in ways that are
- 10:56Speaker 1: so strong that murderers are made. Now, is David a
- 11:00Speaker 1: murderer again, I don't know. I'm not going to sit
- 11:03Speaker 1: here and say that he is. Is he another musician
- 11:06Speaker 1: driven to kill through some mix of hubris and perhaps
- 11:11Speaker 1: video game induced violent fantasy in psychosis? I have no idea,
- 11:16Speaker 1: but I have my theories, and we're going to have
- 11:19Speaker 1: more on this story as it develops, because it's a
- 11:22Speaker 1: fascinating one, and I feel for the victim's family here.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I haven't read. Yeah, I'm just going to stop because
- 11:33Speaker 1: there's a lot out there. There's a lot to talk
- 11:35Speaker 1: about here, but this case is so fresh and we
- 11:37Speaker 1: have to be careful about what we talk about publicly.
- 11:40Speaker 1: But I invite you all to look into this online
- 11:44Speaker 1: and I'll keep bringing you news as it breaks, and
- 11:47Speaker 1: eventually there will for sure be an episode on this
- 11:50Speaker 1: story if David's involvement proves to be what people suspect
- 11:54Speaker 1: it to be. This right now already it reminds me
- 11:57Speaker 1: of an old school Disgrace Slaante episode, you know, the
- 12:01Speaker 1: whole art imitating life thing with Tak forty seven from
- 12:03Speaker 1: season one. I don't like Take's music, and I don't
- 12:07Speaker 1: like David's music either, for that matter. But there's plenty
- 12:10Speaker 1: of music from bad, bad men, as we say, and
- 12:13Speaker 1: some women.
- 12:14Speaker 2: That I do like. And that's the subject of our.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Recommendation section that Zeth and I are diving into later
- 12:19Speaker 1: in the exclusive part of this episode for All Access
- 12:22Speaker 1: members on Patreon and Apple subscriptions. What music from truly
- 12:26Speaker 1: deplorable artists do we still love and that we would recommend,
- 12:32Speaker 1: even it's fucked up to think of it as like,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I'm still still watching, you know, still listening to x
- 12:38Speaker 1: y z by that guy did that thing. But you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'm also recommending we're really pressing ourselves and challenging ourselves
- 12:46Speaker 1: here with the whole art versus artist thing. Zeth is
- 12:49Speaker 1: going to be approaching this from the film angle. What
- 12:51Speaker 1: films by or featuring demonstrably bad bad men and maybe
- 12:55Speaker 1: a few women can we.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Not do without?
- 12:57Speaker 1: And the answer to these questions, you know, I'll be
- 12:59Speaker 1: in the music side of it, like I said, coming
- 13:02Speaker 1: up in the exclusive section of this after party for
- 13:04Speaker 1: our all access members, just five dollars a month to
- 13:06Speaker 1: become a member at disgracelampod dot com slash membership before
- 13:09Speaker 1: prices go up. All right, Old Dirty Bastard is in
- 13:12Speaker 1: your feed right now, and you can use this episode,
- 13:14Speaker 1: this ODB episode as your introduction into the ten episode
- 13:17Speaker 1: story that we did on Wu Tang Clan coming up
- 13:20Speaker 1: next in your feed. Right after this, we're rewinding to
- 13:23Speaker 1: our Pantera and dime Bag Daryl episode. And then hey,
- 13:26Speaker 1: it's October, so that means we hear in Disgraceland are
- 13:29Speaker 1: unleashing a ton of Halloween related content to keep you
- 13:33Speaker 1: spooked all month beginning with our Part two episode on
- 13:36Speaker 1: led Zeppelin in the Haunting of Headley Grange, Jimmy Page
- 13:40Speaker 1: was on some other fucking level. People, You're not gonna
- 13:43Speaker 1: want to miss this, nor you're gonna want to miss
- 13:45Speaker 1: our new episodes on Judas Priest, Pentagram, and ac DC,
- 13:49Speaker 1: all coming in the next few weeks. And we're gonna
- 13:50Speaker 1: be rewinding our classic Halloween Disgracelam episodes all month on
- 13:55Speaker 1: artists like The Cramps, Brandon Lee, the Misfits and more.
- 13:59Speaker 1: All Right, when that Part two led Zeppelin episode hits, though,
- 14:02Speaker 1: like I said, an episode about Headley Grange, the haunting
- 14:05Speaker 1: of that studio, I want you guys to be thinking
- 14:08Speaker 1: about your run ins with haunted homes, haunted anything.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Really.
- 14:12Speaker 1: What are the spookiest things that have ever happened to you, guys?
- 14:16Speaker 1: Run ins with ghosts, seances, ouiji boards, life after death experiences.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Anything can be about.
- 14:23Speaker 1: You can be about you know, your family, your friends,
- 14:27Speaker 1: anything spooky that's happened to you.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Let us know. Let's kick off this October.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Right. You don't have to be Jimmy Page to give
- 14:33Speaker 1: me a call and give me your answers, but just
- 14:35Speaker 1: call let me know. Six one seven nine oh six
- 14:37Speaker 1: six six three eight spookiest shit that's gone on in
- 14:39Speaker 1: your lives? You might hear yourself on next week's after party.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash with your answers to last.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Week's question of the week.
- 15:12Speaker 1: All right, I've been doing a lot of complaining lately
- 15:14Speaker 1: about the lack of current quality music, biopics and documentaries.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But it's not all bad. I should mention, just for balance, okay,
- 15:22Speaker 1: that I caught some of the Live Aid documentary series
- 15:25Speaker 1: at CNN RAN and I got pulled into it. Not
- 15:29Speaker 1: enough to compel me to seek the series out and
- 15:31Speaker 1: watch it on my own, as opposed to just catching
- 15:34Speaker 1: it while surfing channels. But again, I did get pulled in,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and that's saying something. And I don't want to just
- 15:39Speaker 1: be a negative Nancy out here talking shit all the time.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I learned some things. I learned some things about Phil Collins.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I learned a lot about Bob Geldoff that I didn't know.
- 15:47Speaker 1: If you're interested in this time period of pop music,
- 15:49Speaker 1: since this is well worth your time, all right.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I was thinking.
- 15:52Speaker 1: About how I would have made that doc however, on
- 15:56Speaker 1: the same subject, and I should mention that though I'm
- 16:00Speaker 1: railing weekly against the corporate, algorithmic studio storytelling machine CASM.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Hey, we have shirts, by the way.
- 16:06Speaker 1: The fact remains that if a studio is going to
- 16:10Speaker 1: pay me to make a music documentary and give me
- 16:13Speaker 1: an opportunity to explore music history using my storytelling skills,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna jump at the chance. I'm not trying to
- 16:18Speaker 1: be some crusspunk version of a podcaster here. I'm trying
- 16:20Speaker 1: to be the best fucking storyteller I can be in
- 16:23Speaker 1: whatever medium makes sense, and to reach as many people
- 16:26Speaker 1: as possible. And it's mainly because of what we've been
- 16:28Speaker 1: talking about here. Modern music culture bores the hell out
- 16:31Speaker 1: of me. Yet music history is something that my life
- 16:35Speaker 1: is centered around. And I know that's the same for
- 16:38Speaker 1: you guys as well, because you tell me so every day.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Crooked Rain got at us over on Patreon and hipped
- 16:44Speaker 1: us to this David Byrne directed movie True Stories. We
- 16:48Speaker 1: were talking about the greatest rock and roll movies. I've
- 16:50Speaker 1: never heard of this Jackie. On Patreon, she wrote, I
- 16:55Speaker 1: love this community. All the recks that have taken me
- 16:57Speaker 1: out of my music listening, film watching, comfort zone, discovering
- 17:00Speaker 1: new gems and rediscovering stuff I haven't listened to for ages.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I'm sure we are all open to more, especially from
- 17:05Speaker 1: you quieter or discos. I know some of us are
- 17:08Speaker 1: very very vocal, but please don't be shy. I encourage
- 17:10Speaker 1: you to please give us your recommendations and thoughts. And
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know when Jackie posted that, the comments underneath that
- 17:16Speaker 1: post filled up with recommendations from the disco community, including
- 17:20Speaker 1: an audiobook I've never heard of, narrated my ghost Face
- 17:25Speaker 1: Taylor I believe, recommended that. There's a book an autobiography
- 17:28Speaker 1: by Rodney James Dial. I didn't know about this. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: never heard of this recommended by Kathy m If modern
- 17:33Speaker 1: music culture, if modern music culture, if it bores you, okay,
- 17:39Speaker 1: if you're interested in obsessing over music history with like
- 17:41Speaker 1: minded obsessives, then jump into the chat on Patreon and
- 17:44Speaker 1: introduce yourself to the larger disco community. As I mentioned before,
- 17:48Speaker 1: joining our little club is only five bucks a month
- 17:50Speaker 1: and not only gets you into the Patreon chat here
- 17:52Speaker 1: that I'm talking about, but unlocks exclusive content and ad
- 17:55Speaker 1: for you listening. Sign up on Patreon or subscribe through
- 17:58Speaker 1: your Apple podcast app. All right, I'm in the phone
- 18:01Speaker 1: booth at the moment, the one across the hall hanging
- 18:05Speaker 1: on the telephone. It's crowded this week. Let's check out
- 18:08Speaker 1: this message from the eight oh eight where the hell's
- 18:10Speaker 1: eight oh eight Hawaii. Anyway, let's listen.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Hey, how's going love the show?
- 18:15Speaker 3: I just saw listen to your bonus episode and you
- 18:17Speaker 3: were talking about that. Somebody did two episodes in The
- 18:21Speaker 3: Grateful Dead and not knowing you might have done it.
- 18:23Speaker 3: But Fish Trey Anastasia keeping in the.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Jam band scene.
- 18:27Speaker 3: He had a rough time, almost died with addiction, and
- 18:32Speaker 3: Fish is kind of a crazy ass band. Love him
- 18:34Speaker 3: or hate him, some people do. Some people think they're cheesy,
- 18:37Speaker 3: but I think it's definitely an episode that you should make. Thanks,
- 18:42Speaker 3: have great day, Aloha out here in Hawaii.
- 18:44Speaker 2: My friend in the eight oh eight.
- 18:46Speaker 1: We are currently at this moment putting together a Phish
- 18:49Speaker 1: episode as we speak, and of course, right here as
- 18:54Speaker 1: we're doing it, there was this news about a fatal
- 18:58Speaker 1: stabbing at a fish show in Virginia last week week.
- 19:01Speaker 1: This is not part of the story that we were
- 19:03Speaker 1: planning on telling, similar to how the Bumfardo piece of
- 19:07Speaker 1: the Jimmy Buffett story wasn't something that really fit into
- 19:09Speaker 1: our episode. So we've got this problem. We've had this
- 19:13Speaker 1: problem since the beginning of time. How do we cover all.
- 19:16Speaker 2: The interesting bits in these artists stories?
- 19:20Speaker 1: And next week I'm here to tell you now that
- 19:22Speaker 1: we're gonna have an announcement next week on how we're
- 19:24Speaker 1: gonna be dealing with this issue. It's a solution that's
- 19:26Speaker 1: going to result in something cool for you guys, So
- 19:28Speaker 1: keep an eye on your podcast feed for that info.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But yes, eight o eight, we've got a fish episode
- 19:33Speaker 1: and even more fish content coming your way. All right,
- 19:36Speaker 1: let's hear from Morty in the two seven six on
- 19:38Speaker 1: great rock and roll movies.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Hello, Jacobs is Morty from the two seven to six.
- 19:43Speaker 4: I've been listening to both Disgraced Land and Hollywood Land
- 19:48Speaker 4: for months now. It keeps me well entertain while I
- 19:55Speaker 4: work a graveyard shift part time at Cracker Burrow. Fantastic.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I just want to say a rock and roll movie
- 20:04Speaker 4: that that should be mentioned is Beyond the Valley of
- 20:10Speaker 4: the Dolls Bruce Myers Joint. Just it's rock and roll
- 20:15Speaker 4: to the core. It's a parody of Hollywood. You got
- 20:20Speaker 4: an all female group rock band before there was female
- 20:24Speaker 4: rock bands. The soundtrack is just kick ass. You know.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I can't believe nobody's mentioned it, but yeah, I think
- 20:32Speaker 4: that should be mentioned, which was made back in nineteen
- 20:35Speaker 4: seventy and was supposed to be the sequel to Valley
- 20:41Speaker 4: of the Dolls but became something totally different. I guess
- 20:45Speaker 4: that's all I got. Talk to you later, by.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Morty, my man.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Thanks for taking us with you to work at night.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Grateful to be keeping your company on those long overnight shifts.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I'm sad to say that I've never seen Beyond the
- 20:57Speaker 1: Valley of the Dolls.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? I know, disgraceful. I need to
- 21:01Speaker 2: see it.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Maybe I can talk my wife into watching it with
- 21:03Speaker 1: me this weekend on your recommendation.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Thank you, Mordy. Let's read this text from the.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Nine to one four on the same topic. This is
- 21:14Speaker 1: Stace answering your question about rock and roll movie recommendations.
- 21:17Speaker 1: My number one is trained spotting That opening scene of
- 21:20Speaker 1: a gangly, young, buzz cut, fuzzy headed Ian McGregor running
- 21:24Speaker 1: down the street to Iggy Pop's lust for life is
- 21:27Speaker 1: nothing short of iconic, and of course that choose life
- 21:30Speaker 1: monologue delivered by a junkie has lived rent Free in
- 21:32Speaker 1: my head since the film came out in the mid nineties.
- 21:34Speaker 1: What's more rock and roll than Heroin to do? Okay,
- 21:37Speaker 1: love your pop. I've been listening since his debut and
- 21:40Speaker 1: even want to post her for tweeting about it, which
- 21:42Speaker 1: I forgot to collect. But I'm sure the ship has sailed. Ps.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Here is my plea for more coverage of female music
- 21:49Speaker 1: artists behaving badly. It's got to be more out there
- 21:52Speaker 1: than Amy Winehouse. You know what, and she said, Lana
- 21:55Speaker 1: tol right, you're right, she says PPS. I absolutely loved
- 21:59Speaker 1: how you framed the Britain the episode Truth is better
- 22:02Speaker 1: than tabloid fiction.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Stace.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We're putting together our programming for next year and two things.
- 22:11Speaker 1: We're going heavy into stories about women.
- 22:16Speaker 2: In the past.
- 22:16Speaker 1: The problem has are has been that women just started
- 22:18Speaker 1: as fucked up as dudes and they haven't behaved as badly.
- 22:23Speaker 2: But however I found a way in. And the second.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Piece here that you might appreciate is we're working on
- 22:30Speaker 1: a way to bring you guys more fully into the
- 22:31Speaker 1: process of helping us choose these stories. So we'll have
- 22:35Speaker 1: more on that soon, but headline more female artists coming
- 22:39Speaker 1: your way. In disgrace, lam programming all right, three.
- 22:42Speaker 2: H two Right San.
- 22:43Speaker 1: In nineteen seventy eight, a movie came out called American
- 22:45Speaker 1: Hot Wax. I was all of six or eight years
- 22:47Speaker 1: old when it was released on television, so I may
- 22:48Speaker 1: be misremembering some things, but it was about Alan Freed
- 22:51Speaker 1: and probably my introduction to rock. It's got all the
- 22:54Speaker 1: bangers in it and screaming Jay Hawkins performance, and it
- 22:57Speaker 1: blew my mind. But it had all the good stuff,
- 22:59Speaker 1: teams dancing in defiance, races, mingling with each other, and
- 23:03Speaker 1: cops trying to shut it all down.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Another great one.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Was released in nineteen eighty ish called Times Square, a
- 23:10Speaker 1: great soundtrack to young girls escaping a mental health hospital
- 23:13Speaker 1: and in general raising hell and.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Upsetting the public.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I've heard of American Hot Wax, I've probably seen clips
- 23:18Speaker 1: from it. Never heard of the nineteen eighty ish film
- 23:22Speaker 1: Times Square, but I'm highly intrigued.
- 23:25Speaker 2: This sounds fantastic. I love that era of New York.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I just love looking at it on film, especially when
- 23:31Speaker 1: there's some sort of pop, punk, rock and crime angle
- 23:34Speaker 1: to it. So I'm gonna check Times Square out three
- 23:37Speaker 1: h two. Thank you very much, your your I don't
- 23:40Speaker 1: know why, but Times Square nineteen eighty ish reminds me.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Of of Over the Edge, a great rock.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And roll movie that's not about music that came out
- 23:50Speaker 1: I think late seventies, might have been seventy eight seventy
- 23:53Speaker 1: nine Matt Dillon's first movie or second movie.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Maybe Tex was his first movie. It's one of those,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but it's fantastic, incredible soundtrack Over the Edge. Check that
- 24:04Speaker 1: out and check out Times Square on recommendation from the
- 24:06Speaker 1: three to ZO two and oh before I go, speaking
- 24:08Speaker 1: of Over the Edge and beyond the value of the dolls,
- 24:10Speaker 1: we have new hats and t shirts that would fit
- 24:13Speaker 1: well on the characters in both of these movies. That
- 24:16Speaker 1: means they look good on you as well. All right,
- 24:18Speaker 1: but you gotta move quick as our trucker hat or
- 24:20Speaker 1: just say no to chasm shirts and our hoodies. They're
- 24:22Speaker 1: going bye bye in a couple of days. This merch
- 24:24Speaker 1: sale comes to an end on September thirtieth, perhaps even
- 24:28Speaker 1: earlier if sizes and supplies do not last, So hit
- 24:31Speaker 1: up shop disgraceland dot com to grab yours, or just
- 24:34Speaker 1: head over to our website justgracelandpod dot com. I'm running
- 24:37Speaker 1: out of time right now, so no emails this week.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Maybe I'll read them on the Patreon chat in a
- 24:42Speaker 1: video or something in a couple of days. I'll be
- 24:45Speaker 1: back in a flash, though.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Hang tight.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I love Paul Newman. I love Paul Newman so much.
- 25:03Speaker 1: What an incredible actor. Two thousand and eight, when he died,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I was driving home from a gig in New York
- 25:09Speaker 1: with my band Bodega Girls, and we were driving through Connecticut,
- 25:14Speaker 1: and we got home way late or early in the morning,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I should say, I went to bed, woke up next
- 25:20Speaker 1: day I found out he died. And I've always thought,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I don't know, this is so silly and stupid to think,
- 25:26Speaker 1: but you know, driving home from New York to Boston,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I always thought, maybe Paul Newman passed away as we
- 25:32Speaker 1: were driving through Connecticut. And I don't know why that
- 25:36Speaker 1: matters to me. I have no reason for it at all.
- 25:39Speaker 1: It's just a weird, little trivial thing that I always
- 25:42Speaker 1: think of when I think of Paul Newman. I have
- 25:44Speaker 1: great affection for the man as an actor. Slapshot is
- 25:48Speaker 1: one of my favorite movies of all time, and Paul
- 25:51Speaker 1: Newman is the subject. As you know of or some
- 25:54Speaker 1: of you know of this week's Hollywood Land episode. And
- 25:57Speaker 1: here's a little taste of our man, doctor Lundy talking
- 26:00Speaker 1: about Paul in this week's Hollywood Land Rap Party episode.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Robert Redford and Paul Newman were very similar when it
- 26:08Speaker 5: came to philanthropy. You know, Redford was all about the environment.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Newman was all about people, specifically about sick kids, kids
- 26:16Speaker 5: with serious illnesses. He started this company, Newman's Own in
- 26:20Speaker 5: nineteen eighty two, which was a food business that began
- 26:24Speaker 5: with just salad dressing and eventually moved on to like pasta, sauce,
- 26:27Speaker 5: olive oil, pizza, popcorn, cookies, coffee tea. I'm sure you
- 26:31Speaker 5: see the stuff in the supermarket all the time. Quick
- 26:34Speaker 5: shout out to his pasta sauce Sokker Rooney, which is
- 26:37Speaker 5: an all theimer for me. But anyways, my point here
- 26:41Speaker 5: is that when he started this company in eighty.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Two, he was laughed at.
- 26:44Speaker 5: It was like, look at this vain actor putting his
- 26:47Speaker 5: face on a salad dressing label and all that. But
- 26:50Speaker 5: then when people saw what it was really about, that
- 26:52Speaker 5: this company was putting one hundred percent of their profits
- 26:56Speaker 5: into programs that benefited kids with serious illnesses that benefited
- 27:02Speaker 5: school food programs. It was like, holy shit, No, no
- 27:06Speaker 5: actor has ever pulled this off before. And keep in
- 27:09Speaker 5: mind the nonprofits that Newman's own helps fund includes this
- 27:15Speaker 5: network of summer camps for kids with serious illnesses that was,
- 27:19Speaker 5: you know, founded back in the late eighties, and according
- 27:22Speaker 5: to one camp counselor who worked there, Paul Newman would
- 27:25Speaker 5: visit every week just to hang out with the kids,
- 27:28Speaker 5: not for photo ops with the press, not for a
- 27:31Speaker 5: pat on the back. He did it because he just
- 27:34Speaker 5: believed in what the company was doing, and he believed
- 27:36Speaker 5: in helping other people. And you know, this isn't to
- 27:39Speaker 5: say the guy was perfect, because he wasn't. Part of
- 27:42Speaker 5: being authentic like that is that it's a warts and
- 27:45Speaker 5: all thing, you know, And if you want a really
- 27:47Speaker 5: in depth look at that, I highly recommend you check
- 27:51Speaker 5: out this documentary series that was on HBO from a
- 27:54Speaker 5: few years back called The Last Movie Stars, which is
- 27:57Speaker 5: about Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward, directed by
- 28:00Speaker 5: Ethan Hawk.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Guys, make sure you're following Hollywood Land on Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 28:05Speaker 1: or wherever you get your podcast. Paul Newman had this
- 28:08Speaker 1: ornery side to him that I just loved. And like
- 28:12Speaker 1: I said, he lived in Connecticut. Connecticut is technically New England,
- 28:19Speaker 1: I think of it more is New York. I don't
- 28:21Speaker 1: think Paul Newman was a New England sports fan, but
- 28:26Speaker 1: that ornery side of him would have fit perfectly for
- 28:30Speaker 1: the Patriots nation.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Right now, God trying to root for the Patriots this season.
- 28:38Speaker 1: All right, before I get too far, I got to

- 29:01Speaker 2: They laugh.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I'm not even joking. One guy at a local church
- 29:04Speaker 1: event last week asked me if the Patriots were still
- 29:07Speaker 1: even in the NFL. This is before Sunday's game where
- 29:10Speaker 1: they turned the ball over ten thousand times. This team
- 29:12Speaker 1: is an embarrassment and I can't get over how far
- 29:14Speaker 1: we've Fallen. I can't get over how good we had
- 29:17Speaker 1: it back in the day. Brady Belichick, I can't believe
