Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: What is going on? We made it to Friday, Thank goodness.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I am so excited for the weekend I'm going to
- 0:25Speaker 1: be spending time with I call her my final roommate.
- 0:29Speaker 1: She was the last woman I lived with before I
- 0:31Speaker 1: started living on my own, and she got married and
- 0:34Speaker 1: now currently goodness, like within five years, has a husband
- 0:42Speaker 1: and three children and now lives outside of Richmond. So
- 0:45Speaker 1: looking forward to a weekend of some girl time. And
- 0:49Speaker 1: in the meantime, I want to tell you about something
- 0:52Speaker 1: I shared during a coaching call this morning. I was
- 0:55Speaker 1: working with someone who has a goal to get more
- 1:00Speaker 1: publicity for her business, and we were chatting about how
- 1:04Speaker 1: she could do that and what specifically that goal would
- 1:10Speaker 1: look like flesh out. I asked her how she'd want
- 1:13Speaker 1: to feel in a year if she was successful in
- 1:15Speaker 1: that goal, and then asked her the following question, which
- 1:19Speaker 1: is the thoughts starter I want to bring here this week.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I asked her, knowing that your goal is to secure
- 1:27Speaker 1: x amount of press opportunities within the next three sixty five,
- 1:33Speaker 1: what is one thing that you can do within the
- 1:36Speaker 1: next two weeks to get you closer to your goal?
- 1:40Speaker 1: And sometimes it's hard to think that micro right we
- 1:46Speaker 1: get overwhelmed and over consumed by our big, hairy, scary,
- 1:50Speaker 1: audacious goals, as Selene Flanagan once told me. But the
- 1:55Speaker 1: thing is is that by breaking it down and thinking small,
- 1:59Speaker 1: getting and we've talked about that acronym so many times
- 2:02Speaker 1: on the show, specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound,
- 2:06Speaker 1: you can then go after whatever it is that you're
- 2:09Speaker 1: after in a more intelligent way. So let's zero in
- 2:14Speaker 1: on an example. I have always wanted to give a
- 2:18Speaker 1: TED talk. It is something that is very much on
- 2:21Speaker 1: my radar and something that I am nowhere near accomplishing
- 2:25Speaker 1: at this moment. Logistically, I would say that I have
- 2:30Speaker 1: the outline of my talk what I believe I would
- 2:33Speaker 1: talk about. I've watched plenty of Ted talks, right, but
- 2:38Speaker 1: I've made no progress necessarily in terms of figuring out
- 2:42Speaker 1: exactly how to make this happen, connecting, researching, et cetera.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So if I know that my goal by April twenty
- 2:50Speaker 1: eighth of twenty and twenty four, a year from now,
- 2:53Speaker 1: is that I want to give a TEDx talk, let's
- 2:56Speaker 1: narrow it down a little bit more. Then this week
- 3:00Speaker 1: a small goal that I can set something that I
- 3:03Speaker 1: can make sure happens is I do research into where
- 3:07Speaker 1: the TEDx talks happen in my area and build myself
- 3:11Speaker 1: a spreadsheet of the people that are responsible for putting
- 3:16Speaker 1: together these events. That way, with that information, I can
- 3:20Speaker 1: start to think about reaching out. Another thing that I
- 3:24Speaker 1: can do if I know that I want to reach
- 3:26Speaker 1: out perhaps within the next month, is take some time
- 3:29Speaker 1: over the next two weeks to draft what that email
- 3:32Speaker 1: would look like. So now you're starting to see where
- 3:34Speaker 1: my thought process is going. Right. You might not think, oh,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I want to give a ted talk, So the first
- 3:39Speaker 1: thing I should do is think about the email that
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm going to send to someone that might get me there,
- 3:43Speaker 1: or maybe you would. But all of this to say
- 3:46Speaker 1: is that there are small steps that we must take
- 3:50Speaker 1: on our journey to get to where we want to go.
- 3:53Speaker 1: We don't just run a marathon without doing the training
- 3:56Speaker 1: rate and if you do, bless Truly. I've said this
- 4:01Speaker 1: before and I'll say it again, the journey is the destination.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So make sure that, regardless of what your big goals are,
- 4:08Speaker 1: that you are enjoying yourself in the process, because the
- 4:11Speaker 1: process is the point. There is no joy at the
- 4:15Speaker 1: finish line. If you don't make that process worthwhile, and
- 4:19Speaker 1: if you dread it, then truly you have to ask
- 4:22Speaker 1: yourself what was my why to begin with? So my
- 4:27Speaker 1: prompt for you this week what is something that you
- 4:30Speaker 1: are after and what is one small action that you
- 4:33Speaker 1: can take in the next two weeks to get you
- 4:36Speaker 1: closer to that overall big, scary, hairy, audacious goal. And
- 4:42Speaker 1: now a listener question.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Hi Emily, it's fearing to hear from West Sussex in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the UK. My question is how do you go about
- 4:51Speaker 2: making big career or life decisions. Have you got a
- 4:55Speaker 2: strategy and are really logical about it or do you
- 4:58Speaker 2: tend to have a strong gut feeling that you can
- 5:00Speaker 2: photo And have you ever struggled with decision making or
- 5:03Speaker 2: decision regret or are you a fairly decisive person. I'm
- 5:07Speaker 2: at a bit of a crossroads in my career and
- 5:09Speaker 2: I'm worried about making the wrong decision, so I'd welcome
- 5:12Speaker 2: any advice. Thank you very much.
- 5:14Speaker 1: This is a really good question. Hey Fiona, I love
- 5:17Speaker 1: I love hurdlers from all corners of the world. Thank
- 5:20Speaker 1: you so much for this question decision making. I would
- 5:23Speaker 1: like to think that I am really one to follow
- 5:27Speaker 1: my gut and my intuition. I am a pretty level
- 5:31Speaker 1: headed person, at least I like to think so, and I,
- 5:35Speaker 1: generally speaking, go by this compass that I'll share with you.
- 5:41Speaker 1: If something happens, whether it is an opportunity, an email
- 5:45Speaker 1: hits my inbox, I ask myself if I am responding
- 5:49Speaker 1: or reacting, and reacting is something that might happen very quickly?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Right I get an email in my inbox and it's
- 5:57Speaker 1: offering me a gig that I'm very excited about. Okay, awesome.
- 6:02Speaker 1: If I was to reply right then and there, I
- 6:04Speaker 1: might not think fully about what I would want to
- 6:08Speaker 1: respond with had I removed myself from the situation a
- 6:12Speaker 1: little bit more. For instance, what kind of compensation is
- 6:16Speaker 1: there for this opportunity? Is this opportunity one that definitely
- 6:19Speaker 1: aligns with my values? And what is a priority for
- 6:22Speaker 1: me right now? Do I feel like I have the
- 6:24Speaker 1: bandwidth to execute this in a way that I would
- 6:26Speaker 1: be proud of. So many questions that I can ask myself,
- 6:29Speaker 1: some of which I may not take a step back
- 6:31Speaker 1: and think about if I am reacting. So I always
- 6:35Speaker 1: say this in terms of something similar to that situation,
- 6:38Speaker 1: Ask yourself what would be the damage quote unquote if
- 6:42Speaker 1: I just waited so that I could respond instead of react.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I think that something that happened for us during the
- 6:51Speaker 1: pandemic was that we learned a lot more about responding,
- 6:55Speaker 1: about taking the time to listen to that intuition to
- 6:59Speaker 1: do whatever it is that truly feels like it serves
- 7:03Speaker 1: us because the world slowed down a little bit and
- 7:06Speaker 1: we slowed down a little bit. Now, granted, there are
- 7:09Speaker 1: much bigger decisions to be made than whether or not
- 7:12Speaker 1: I would accept a gig, you know, moving into a
- 7:16Speaker 1: new apartment and spending more money, making the decision maybe
- 7:19Speaker 1: to change cities, ending or starting a new relationship. Goodness.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I mean, the list goes on, right and when it
- 7:27Speaker 1: comes to making big decisions, And I kind of hinted
- 7:31Speaker 1: at this before, but I really go back to my
- 7:34Speaker 1: values and I ask myself, is whatever I am thinking
- 7:38Speaker 1: about a reflection of who I am and who I
- 7:41Speaker 1: want to be? Is this something that's going to fill
- 7:45Speaker 1: up my cup? Is this something that allows me to
- 7:49Speaker 1: be my best self, empowers me to go in the
- 7:52Speaker 1: direction that I dream of going. And I wish I
- 7:56Speaker 1: could tell you that it will always be simple if
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know your values and you are clear headed and
- 8:01Speaker 1: trust your gut. But I know that's not the case.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So when all else fails, my biggest piece of advice
- 8:07Speaker 1: for decision making. And yes, I have had times where
- 8:10Speaker 1: I've doubted mine in the past, but I truly believe
- 8:13Speaker 1: that what is meant to be for me will be
- 8:15Speaker 1: for me. Have someone that you trust that you can
- 8:18Speaker 1: bounce things off of. For me, it is my family,
- 8:20Speaker 1: it is my parents, It is my dear friends that
- 8:22Speaker 1: I'm so lucky to have as a part of my life.
- 8:25Speaker 1: These are people that I know do not judge, but
- 8:28Speaker 1: rather listen and also truly want what's best for me.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And so I would encourage you to lean on your people,
- 8:36Speaker 1: your anchors, and know that they've got your best interest
- 8:39Speaker 1: in mind as well. That's it for this week. Make
