Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Shawn Salisbury's our guest with us every Tuesday. Hear love
- 0:05Speaker 1: chopping it up with Sean Hey, as we're going to
- 0:07Speaker 1: break Seawn. I kind of pose that question hypothetically. With
- 0:11Speaker 1: Darren Rizzy, we're looking at a guy that clearly has
- 0:14Speaker 1: changed culture, but has never been an offensive or defensive coordinator.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Neither had John Harbaugh, right, he was a special teams guy.
- 0:22Speaker 1: There are those examples, and then there's the perfect blend
- 0:24Speaker 1: of like and Andy Reid that's a culture guy that's
- 0:26Speaker 1: also the play caller. Which would you like if you're
- 0:28Speaker 1: looking at the Saints with Darren Rizzy, if they continue
- 0:30Speaker 1: on this role, I mean, how much do you dock
- 0:34Speaker 1: him or knock him for not being a guy that's
- 0:36Speaker 1: going to control one side of the ball.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Not one ounce. As matter of fact, I kind of
- 0:40Speaker 2: like it.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Why.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Okay, Well, if I'm a head coach after all these
- 0:45Speaker 2: years of playing offense, let's talk about human nature for
- 0:48Speaker 2: a second. Do you think I'm all of a sudden
- 0:52Speaker 2: going to be turned into a defensive coach in his
- 0:54Speaker 2: favorite I don't care what any coach tells us. Mattie,
- 0:57Speaker 2: if you're if you're Jeff Fisher back in the day
- 0:59Speaker 2: when he was coaching defense. Or if you're Andy Reid,
- 1:03Speaker 2: he gets out of Spagnola's way, right, you're an offensive guy.
- 1:06Speaker 2: If you were, if you cut your teeth as an
- 1:08Speaker 2: offensive guy, what's Nick Saban gonna favor most of the time?
- 1:11Speaker 3: Defense?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Defensive backs and defense when you're ahead, no matter what,
- 1:16Speaker 2: even though you're a head coach, you got to oversee
- 1:18Speaker 2: it all. You know, I've been with coaches they got
- 1:20Speaker 2: an offensive background in their head coaches. Now, guess what
- 1:23Speaker 2: they do most of the time during practice, They help
- 1:27Speaker 2: her around the offense. They just do. It's it's human nature.
- 1:30Speaker 2: It's just the way it is. If you if you're
- 1:32Speaker 2: a if you started out as a singer and you
- 1:35Speaker 2: got a couple acting roles along the way, and you
- 1:37Speaker 2: show up in fifteen of the each are there, you're
- 1:40Speaker 2: gonna probably go to what you know, that's that's just
- 1:43Speaker 2: the way it is. So in this case, you know
- 1:45Speaker 2: why I like it. You don't have a favorite You
- 1:48Speaker 2: just don't. And I know it's like, you know, we
- 1:50Speaker 2: don't have favorite kids. We like them all, but oh
- 1:52Speaker 2: my firstborn okay or whatever it is. We everybody has
- 1:57Speaker 2: something that they're that they and I know it's ound's crazy,
- 2:01Speaker 2: but I am a bit in my career seeing it.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Offensive guys tend to favor their offensive practice field defensive
- 2:09Speaker 2: some guys, if they're really into it, they don't even
- 2:12Speaker 2: you'll hear teams when they're not winning. Well, he didn't
- 2:14Speaker 2: even spend any time with the defense or any time
- 2:16Speaker 2: with the offense. Human nature, you're you're you hang around
- 2:19Speaker 2: the pe your environment that you're used to, and I
- 2:22Speaker 2: think that especially when you're a first time head coach
- 2:24Speaker 2: or an interim head coach, if your offense or defense,
- 2:27Speaker 2: but why I like it? And you mentioned Andy Reid,
- 2:29Speaker 2: And you know who John Harbaugh's coach was you do
- 2:32Speaker 2: when he was in Philadelphia was Andy Reid culture guy.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And when it first happens, we all of a sudden think, well,
- 2:39Speaker 2: why would you hire special teams coach? Well, because John
- 2:42Speaker 2: was damn good. He's a culture guy and understood when
- 2:44Speaker 2: Andy was trying to teach him. Then you hire guys
- 2:47Speaker 2: on both sides. There is no and I'm not saying
- 2:49Speaker 2: the intentionally favor somebody. It's just it's just human nature
- 2:52Speaker 2: to be around what you're even more comfortable with or
- 2:54Speaker 2: what you've cut your teeth doing Nick Saban it practice,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I'll guarantee you hangs around the defensive backfield because your
- 3:00Speaker 2: defensive backs coach with Nick Saban, and you screw up,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you won't be long for the job. Okay, less patience there.
- 3:06Speaker 2: It's the same anywhere else. So I could care less
- 3:09Speaker 2: what side of the ball you coach, and I definitely
- 3:11Speaker 2: could care less if your special team coach and it's
- 3:14Speaker 2: the chicken or the egg? Are you? Does winning come
- 3:17Speaker 2: before culture? Or culture come before winning? And I think
- 3:20Speaker 2: in my time it's the culture, the environment, the buy
- 3:23Speaker 2: in comes before the winning. You can win some games
- 3:26Speaker 2: just because you're talented. I think to sustain winning, culture
- 3:30Speaker 2: comes first, in which in we use that word a lot.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Whether it's culture, buy in, everybody on the same page,
- 3:38Speaker 2: the respect, all those kind of bunched into one thing.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So I have zero problem with it. If you get
- 3:43Speaker 2: guys to do more than they can do or then
- 3:46Speaker 2: they're used to doing. That's why I want is my
- 3:48Speaker 2: head coach. I can find X's and O's guys. I
- 3:51Speaker 2: always can't, and if they don't work, I'll find the
- 3:53Speaker 2: next one. They all know X's and O's Leadership's not
- 3:56Speaker 2: easy to get because it's also not popular because you're
- 4:00Speaker 2: going to piss people off along the way. Buy in's
- 4:02Speaker 2: tough to get because you don't want to be kissing
- 4:04Speaker 2: somebody's backside, but you also want to make the player
- 4:07Speaker 2: know that you got their back. So it's trust and
- 4:09Speaker 2: it's transparency, all those things that some coordinators that get
- 4:13Speaker 2: to be head coaches or assistants to get to the
- 4:15Speaker 2: head coaches, they just don't quite grasp that and they
- 4:18Speaker 2: go back to their position coach or coordinating. Some just
- 4:21Speaker 2: aren't good at it. Then you get some that are
- 4:22Speaker 2: good at both Andy Reid. You get some that are
- 4:25Speaker 2: good at at knowing how to be a head coach
- 4:27Speaker 2: or yelling screen, but aren't good at making sure everybody
- 4:30Speaker 2: there's a trust factor because they're a coach and a
- 4:33Speaker 2: general manager, they're too close to the front of There's
- 4:35Speaker 2: a lot of different layers to it. You give me
- 4:37Speaker 2: a guy who gets people believing they can do more
- 4:40Speaker 2: than they do and hiring the right staff when it's
- 4:44Speaker 2: now an interim coach doesn't get much chance to do that,
- 4:47Speaker 2: but the players get to a point where they say,
- 4:49Speaker 2: I'll do anything for him, and then the x's and
- 4:51Speaker 2: o's come, But I'll take culture and leadership and buy
- 4:55Speaker 2: in over you coached. And I've seen way too many
- 4:58Speaker 2: offensive and defensive coordinators that were great at coordinating, they
- 5:01Speaker 2: become head coaches and couldn't run their own nose, let
- 5:04Speaker 2: alone run a team. So I'll take that anytime. The
- 5:08Speaker 2: fact that that Rizzy's a special teams coach has zero
- 5:12Speaker 2: to do. And if he can be ninety percent or
- 5:14Speaker 2: eighty percent of John Harbaugh and he gets this gig
- 5:18Speaker 2: and they play well and the buy in continues, why
- 5:20Speaker 2: do you have to go look for a sexier name
- 5:22Speaker 2: because he's is a coordinator. I think it's overrated being
- 5:25Speaker 2: a coordinator to be a head coach. I don't. I
- 5:28Speaker 2: don't think it's necessary if you're a great leader. Great
- 5:30Speaker 2: leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and they don't
- 5:32Speaker 2: need to be able to call defensive players offensive places.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That's why I empower those guys I hire to do that. Yeah, okay,
- 5:39Speaker 2: they know the ex'es and o's. You go take care
- 5:41Speaker 2: of your guys all oversee that. Now, what do you
- 5:43Speaker 2: think Rizzy's going to do during special teams? And even
- 5:50Speaker 2: if he turned it over to a defense special teams coordinator.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You know damn well, if they screw up and or
- 5:55Speaker 2: out of their lane, who do you think is get
- 5:57Speaker 2: the wrath of it? The special teams coach. That's human nature.
- 6:00Speaker 1: When they liked the field goal against Atlanta, it looked
- 6:02Speaker 1: like his head was gonna go.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Which not. So there's no doubt. There's no doubt. So
- 6:06Speaker 2: to me, leadership, buy in, culture comes before winning and
- 6:11Speaker 2: also is the number. Those those are the traits I
- 6:13Speaker 2: need in a head coach. I got plenty of x's
- 6:15Speaker 2: in those guys. Now to oversee it and say I
- 6:17Speaker 2: don't want to do that. We're playing great defense, run
- 6:19Speaker 2: the football. Fine, that that that's why you the head coach.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Those are the tough decisions and when to go for it,
- 6:24Speaker 2: when we're punting, when do we go forward on fourth down?
- 6:27Speaker 2: But give me a leadership. And for the first two games,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and this was about his balanced attack, big plays, Taysom
- 6:32Speaker 2: Hill getting involved, catching it, running it, Kamara getting involved.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I mean every car was efficient with the football they
- 6:39Speaker 2: and then their fourth quarter they closed it out, so
- 6:42Speaker 2: it was it was impressive. And at two and zero,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I'm not ready to move on from him and automatically
- 6:47Speaker 2: and interim coaches usually do get fired. Yeah, but I
- 6:50Speaker 2: got to see this through and find out what this
- 6:52Speaker 2: team does down the stretch and if if his impact
- 6:55Speaker 2: is really this powerful. If it is, I don't need
- 6:57Speaker 2: a sexier name to be my head coach.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That's a great segue. So there's six games left. They're
- 7:02Speaker 1: going into their buy. This week they come out. Let's
- 7:04Speaker 1: give me just a reaction thought to these you come
- 7:07Speaker 1: out your buy, you're at home against the Rams.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Thoughts, Oh, winnable, there's no question. Now what you have
- 7:13Speaker 2: is a healthy Rams. You know what they're gonna do.
- 7:15Speaker 2: They're gonna drop back and get those guys. You got
- 7:17Speaker 2: to play in that game. You got to make sure
- 7:19Speaker 2: that those two receivers, you know, Pooka and Cup don't
- 7:22Speaker 2: take over the game. Hit Matt Stafford. That's a winnable game.
- 7:25Speaker 2: And they're in that. You said they're in New Orleans.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Right, it's a New Orleans.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely winnable game. That's a Dow Jones The West
- 7:31Speaker 2: is winnable as well, But that's definitely winnable. The way
- 7:33Speaker 2: they've been playing the last two weeks.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You go to the Giants where you're gonna face Tommy DeVito.
- 7:38Speaker 2: If you don't win that game and take two weeks
- 7:41Speaker 2: off and quit football, they're awful.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You're home against the Commanders.
- 7:46Speaker 2: That'll be a tough one. Tough, that's tough. You got
- 7:48Speaker 2: to as we well know, the quarterback's pretty damn good.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And talk about culture change. Look, look what you know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: dan Quinn's done turning over to those guys all kind
- 7:57Speaker 2: of oversee some defense and do all that. But let
- 8:00Speaker 2: Cliff take care of that. And they got a good quarterback.
- 8:02Speaker 2: That'll be a tough one today. I'd favor I would
- 8:05Speaker 2: favor Washington going into that game.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Then you're at green Bay home against the Raiders at
- 8:09Speaker 1: the Bucks. That's how you finish.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Green Bay will be tough. Yeah, at home, but you
- 8:15Speaker 2: can win the Bucks game because they got some dow
- 8:18Speaker 2: Jones in them too. And there was what was the
- 8:20Speaker 2: other game?
- 8:21Speaker 1: So it's at green Bay home against home against Las Vegas.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Then at the Bucks.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Four and two easily capable? Is that six games that
- 8:30Speaker 2: he said, wait five.
- 8:30Speaker 3: If they go four and two or two.
- 8:33Speaker 1: On top on top of the two they've already won.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That means he would have gone six and two in
- 8:38Speaker 1: his eight game stretches. An interim that was the only
- 8:42Speaker 1: hard to deny.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Huh, especially when you're when you go in and everybody
- 8:46Speaker 2: has kind of left you for dead. Oh it's a
- 8:48Speaker 2: guy with interim coach. We know he's getting fired. They're
- 8:50Speaker 2: gonna go do all kinds of different things. No, if
- 8:54Speaker 2: that's the case and players go to bat for him,
- 8:57Speaker 2: I'm not saying player in powerment gets the coach hired,
- 8:59Speaker 2: but say, you know, what he's done is change the
- 9:01Speaker 2: way we think. And Mickey and the group say, you
- 9:04Speaker 2: know what, why do I need to go? I got
- 9:06Speaker 2: him in house because once then you're gonna fire a
- 9:08Speaker 2: whole staff, You're gonna move on from everybody, and you're
- 9:12Speaker 2: gonna have to redo the thing and hope that the
- 9:14Speaker 2: next coordinator or a retread is going to be he
- 9:18Speaker 2: gets buying. And what it is is if you don't
- 9:20Speaker 2: get that, all of a sudden, you're like, well, they
- 9:22Speaker 2: got rid of the guy we wanted. So you go
- 9:23Speaker 2: in with a negative the negative thought. If he's able
- 9:26Speaker 2: to go four and two or even three and three
- 9:28Speaker 2: last the last six games, I think you have to
- 9:31Speaker 2: strongly consider it. And when you have it in house
- 9:33Speaker 2: and you don't have to change much in the verbiage
- 9:35Speaker 2: and everything. There's a comfortability, not a complacency, but a comfortability.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think that it'll be one of those those coaches
- 9:42Speaker 2: that you you have to keep. You'll consider others. But
- 9:45Speaker 2: matter of fact, if it gets to the point where
- 9:47Speaker 2: they're like four and one and they're waiting on the
- 9:49Speaker 2: last game, get it done soon so you go into
- 9:52Speaker 2: the offseason, No, and don't leave any doubt. If he's
- 9:54Speaker 2: able to pull that off with what they've been through,
- 9:56Speaker 2: I got no problem hiring him.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Sean Salisbury, it's you know what, remind a little bit
- 10:00Speaker 1: of Sean if he gets that point. Miami had Dan
- 10:03Speaker 1: Campbell as an interim head coach.
- 10:04Speaker 2: They blew that.
- 10:05Speaker 3: They blew it.
- 10:06Speaker 1: They could have hired, didn't it because they were looking
- 10:09Speaker 1: for the better name, And I mean.
- 10:10Speaker 2: They were bigger and sexier, and you know what, how
- 10:12Speaker 2: many times it is supposed to be bigger and oh
- 10:14Speaker 2: more pub and everybody knows him as has fizzled. Hire
- 10:18Speaker 2: the guy who gets people to buy into what you're
- 10:21Speaker 2: trying to teach and watch it. Just watch it bloom man.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I'm past the point of the sex. If the sexy
- 10:28Speaker 2: name's Andy Reid, great, how many of those guys are there.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But the only way we find out about a guy
- 10:33Speaker 2: like Rizzy is hire him and let's see what he does.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And the great thing, now, see real quick, I know
- 10:39Speaker 2: I'm late at this night. If he's got if he
- 10:42Speaker 2: only had Normally we fire coaches at the end of seasons,
- 10:45Speaker 2: right like with three games to go, and they don't
- 10:47Speaker 2: really have chance to put there even if they go
- 10:48Speaker 2: too and one, we say, well, let's move on.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Good point.
- 10:51Speaker 2: The fact that he would get what would that be
- 10:54Speaker 2: eight games right half a season. Now he gets to
- 10:57Speaker 2: put his stamp on it, and a five and three,
- 10:59Speaker 2: six and two, You're like, okay, he's had a he's
- 11:02Speaker 2: he's he's had enough time to let us see what
- 11:04Speaker 2: they're doing. If they end up going six and two,
- 11:07Speaker 2: why the hell do you need to leave the building?
- 11:09Speaker 2: And it's not gonna cost you six seven eight million
- 11:11Speaker 2: dollars to do it.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You would have a large enough sample where you could
- 11:14Speaker 1: say Ellie coached.
- 11:15Speaker 3: The team.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Set of the two game throwaway, that everybody's got their
- 11:19Speaker 2: car starting their golf clubs in the trunk, right, This
- 11:22Speaker 2: at least gives me a body of work to say
- 11:24Speaker 2: Oh look what he's done. Come from behind, have a
- 11:27Speaker 2: big fourth quarter, get guys to play well, running game,
- 11:30Speaker 2: get to all these things. I empower him if they
- 11:33Speaker 2: get to that point and take care of it. Like
- 11:34Speaker 2: we just said, Mickey doesn't need to go outside the building.
- 11:38Speaker 1: He Sean Salisbury at Sean Unfiltered, Doug him Afollo. He
- 11:41Speaker 1: catch him over a weekday morning there sports like seven
- 11:43Speaker 1: ninety five season's best.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Sean. We appreciate you, man, Thank you.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Love a brother, Thank you. Appreciate you
