- 0:01Good morning and a warm welcome to your show,
- 0:05Sunny Mornings in Boston. I'm your host, Melissa,
- 0:09and it's Friday, September 25th. You'll be interested
- 0:14to know. 70 years ago, today, in 1956. The first
- 0:20transatlantic telephone cable linked North America
- 0:23and Europe with reliable direct voice communication,
- 0:27carrying many simultaneous conversations beneath
- 0:30the ocean, and proving long -distance voice could
- 0:33travel in real time across the Atlantic. That
- 0:37achievement opened an era of instant intercontinental
- 0:40conversation and transformed global business
- 0:43and personal ties. So now you know. And now,
- 0:49it's time for the weather report. This morning,
- 0:55it's partly sunny. and it feels like 56 degrees
- 0:59with 15 miles per hour wind. The sunset will
- 1:03take place at 6 33 and it will rise again tomorrow
- 1:06at 6 35. It looks like we're in for a mostly
- 1:10cloudy day with a high near 66 and a breezy northeast
- 1:14wind around 20 miles per hour ringing a chance
- 1:17of rain after two o 'clock. If you're inland,
- 1:21it will hit a high of 67 tonight. Expect rain
- 1:26likely with cloudy skies, a low of 54, and a
- 1:30windy north wind around 28 miles per hour along
- 1:34with a good chance for more rainfall. The nearshore
- 1:37buoy at Cape Cod Bay reads 62 degrees for the
- 1:42water temperature. Looking ahead in the weather.
- 1:47Expect a wet and windy weekend as Saturday brings
- 1:50steady rain with highs near 61. and northeast
- 1:53winds around 23 to 26 miles per hour, dusting
- 1:57as high as 52 with 1 to 2 inches possible. Rain
- 2:02continues into Sunday with highs near 62 and
- 2:05similar breezy northeast winds. Then showers
- 2:08and thunderstorms linger into Monday with highs
- 2:11around 62 and a diminishing north wind. Bonjour,
- 2:16food enthusiasts! This podcast is brought to
- 2:18you by Versailles Cafe and Pastries in Encinitas.

- 2:44day from 8 to 5. So stop on by and don't forget
- 2:48to tell them. Sunny mornings send you. In local
- 2:53news, public dollars fund Boston's public schools,
- 2:58but many communities supplement with private
- 3:00donations, and those dollars are not spread evenly
- 3:03across the city. Now, a Boston city councilor
- 3:07is calling for more transparency around this
- 3:10funding. The Boston Latin School had a nearly
- 3:13$95 million endowment at the end of fiscal year
- 3:172025, making a meaningful difference for its
- 3:20students. In contrast, Roger Clap Elementary
- 3:23in Dorchester raised just shy of $4 ,000 in fiscal
- 3:27year 2026. City Councilor Minierd Culpepper highlighted
- 3:32the discrepancy, noting the need for more equitable
- 3:35funding across schools. Counselor Julia Maggia
- 3:39plans to create a working group to address this
- 3:42financial disparity. Now on to sports. Falcons
- 3:5235, Packers 14, final last night on Thursday
- 3:56Night Football at Lambeau Field. Michael Pennex
- 4:00Jr. made his season debut and threw a touchdown
- 4:04pass to Austin Hooper. directing Atlanta's most
- 4:07productive offensive night of the year, with
- 4:10Brian Robinson running for over 100 yards and
- 4:14a score. The number that tells it, through two
- 4:17games, Atlanta hadn't run a single play inside
- 4:21the red zone. Last night, the offense scored
- 4:24on both of its trips there. Jordan Love and the
- 4:28Packers had gone turnover -free through two weeks,
- 4:31but Green Bay managed barely 100 yards of total
- 4:35offense. and never found the rhythm that carried
- 4:38it past the Jets in overtime. Atlanta moves to
- 4:421 and 2, with real evidence its offense can move
- 4:46the ball. Breemday falls to 1 and 2 as well,
- 4:50its first loss of the season. Same record, opposite
- 4:54trajectories. One climbing out of a hole, one
- 4:57searching for answers. In local sports, The Red
- 5:02Sox dropped the finale to Cleveland 1 -0 last
- 5:06night, Rangers swore us, taking the loss despite
- 5:09five strong innings, and the Guardians took the
- 5:12series. Boston has now lost 4 -5, but the playoff
- 5:18spot is locked up, so it's about finding rhythm.
- 5:21They host the Cubs this afternoon at 1 -0 -5,
- 5:25Clay Homes on the mound. Off the field, Eli White
- 5:29is done for the year after lisp -rank surgery,
- 5:32opening a door for speedster Braden Ward, who
- 5:35set Worcester's stolen base record and could
- 5:38debut in October. On the ice, the Bruins head
- 5:42to Washington tonight, at 7 for round 2 of their
- 5:45preseason series. Matthew Poitras is day -to
- 5:50-day with a lower body issue, though Mason Lorry
- 5:53passed his tests after a camp scare. Boston also
- 5:57waved defenseman Max Gannett to Providence. Over
- 6:02at BC, the Eagles open ACC play tomorrow at noon
- 6:05against unbeaten Virginia Tech at Alumni Stadium,
- 6:09with Bo McCormack back in the backfield. The
- 6:13Patriots placed Del Pettis on IR and are banged
- 6:16up heading to Jacksonville Sunday. Drake May
- 6:20says it's urgency, not talent, holding the offense
- 6:23back. Meanwhile, the Celtics camp roster is set,
- 6:28headlined by news center Mitchell Robinson with
- 6:31Media Day Monday. In top news, researchers say
- 6:37they have the most conclusive proof of Thomas
- 6:40Jefferson's paternity of Sally Hemming's children.
- 6:44A strand of hair found in Jefferson's Bible launched
- 6:46a 15 -year investigation involving DNA scientists.
- 6:50historians, genealogists, and descendants of
- 6:54both Jefferson and Hemings. The story of that
- 6:57investigation and what it reveals is told in
- 7:00Richard Curran's new book, History by a Hair.
- 7:04This discovery validates the complex history
- 7:07surrounding Jefferson, emphasizing that all his
- 7:10descendants, whether through his wife Martha
- 7:13Wales or Sally Hemings, are part of one American
- 7:16family. Acknowledging the shared history is essential
- 7:20for reconciling differences within the nation.
- 7:24In business news, Philadelphia Federal Reserve
- 7:28President Anna Paulson said Thursday that she
- 7:31and her colleagues may need to raise interest
- 7:33rates further to bring inflation back to target.
- 7:37Speaking a week after the Federal Open Market
- 7:39Committee raised benchmark borrowing rates by
- 7:42a quarter percentage point, Paulson noted that
- 7:45inflation trends are still worrying. She stated
- 7:48that underlying inflation is still running around
- 7:512 .5 to 3%, which is well above the 2 % target.
- 7:57Paulson remarked that inflation has held higher
- 7:59even outside of oil supply shocks and tariffs.
- 8:03She added that economic output has been solid
- 8:06and the labor market is holding steady. In crypto
- 8:11movement, Bitcoin is up 3 % for the week to about
- 8:15$84 ,000. Ethereum is unchanged at about $3 ,000,
- 8:22and XRP is up 7 % to $1 .53. Moving on to a more

- 9:09to tell them Sunny Morning sent you by. And now,
- 9:13back to the show. Let's talk science. In a first
- 9:18for marine mammals, veterinarians have used bacteria
- 9:22-killing viruses to treat a beluga whale with
- 9:24a drug -resistant infection. Jetta, an 11 -year
- 9:28-old beluga whale at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut,
- 9:32developed chronic pneumonia caused by multi -drug
- 9:35-resistant E. coli bacteria. After antibiotics
- 9:39proved mostly ineffective, experts developed
- 9:42a bacteriophage treatment for Jetta specifically
- 9:45chosen to fight her infection. Molly Martini,
- 9:50senior veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, notes
- 9:52that marine mammals face multi -drug resistant
- 9:55infections far more often than land mammals.
- 9:59Jetta was treated through a specially crafted
- 10:01nebulizer and her care team has not found any
- 10:05evidence of recurrence. And in entertainment
- 10:10news... Dinosaurs have been running around movie
- 10:14theaters for decades, but it is surprisingly
- 10:16difficult to escape the very large shadow cast
- 10:19by Jurassic Park. The trick might be forgetting
- 10:23about theme parks altogether and simply dropping
- 10:25the prehistoric monsters into an ordinary American
- 10:29neighborhood. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor
- 10:33star in The End of Oak Street, which is officially
- 10:35America's number one movie at home. after topping
- 10:39the Apple TV Store's United States movie chart.
- 10:43This sci -fi survival movie has now spent six
- 10:46days at number one, ahead of the invite, back
- 10:49rooms, and Tony. The movie currently holds an
- 10:53excellent 86 % critic score on Rotten Tomatoes
- 10:56from 335 reviews. Well, all righty, folks. It's
- 11:02time for the quote of the day. And today, Our
- 11:07quote comes from the American educator and philosopher
- 11:10John Dewey. And he said, education is not preparation
- 11:15for life. Education is life itself, highlighting
- 11:19the importance of equitable access to resources,
- 11:22as seen in the Boston school's funding disparity.
- 11:26And that's a wrap for this morning. You can check
