- 0:00Getting married is very easy. Staying married is very hard.
- 0:04Staying happily married is very, very hard.
- 0:07And even people that have Jesus find it to be very hard.
- 0:11And if you don't have Jesus, it's impossible.
- 0:14All right, little Q&A. What do you look for in a new
- 0:18church? Home?
- 0:20Number one, Bible teaching. Are they Bible teaching?
- 0:24Bible believing church and are they clear on the issues that
- 0:29are being compromised in our day?
- 0:31Like there's only two genders, male and female.
- 0:34Marriage is for one man, one woman.
- 0:36Sex is only for marriage. Some of those things will tell
- 0:40you whether or not they're soft woke, hard woke, or Bible
- 0:44believing conservative, which is exactly where you want to be.
- 0:47In addition, I would ask yourself how are the people?
- 0:52So if the Bible is taught, praise God.
- 0:55Are the people warm, loving. Do they seem healthy, joyful.
- 1:00Are you seeing the fruit of the Spirit, you know, in the life of
- 1:02the community and the church family?
- 1:04Cause church is really largely about connecting with God and
- 1:08his people. And if they're people, you're
- 1:10like, I, I enjoy these people and these, these feel like my
- 1:13people praise God, then that could be a great place for you.
- 1:16In addition, then getting to know a little bit about the
- 1:20senior leader and their marriage and like, is this a joyful,
- 1:24happy, healthy, holy marriage? Are are they together?
- 1:28Are they strong and intact? Cause a lot of the times what
- 1:32creates the crisis in the church is there's a problem in the
- 1:35marriage, that there's infidelity in the marriage and
- 1:37then that breaks everything. And then I would go to secondary
- 1:41issues. If you've got kids, you know, is
- 1:44it a good place for your kids? If you're married, is it a good
- 1:47church that supports and strengthens marriage?
- 1:50What I would tell you is go for a while and give it the benefit
- 1:57of the doubt. Don't come in with a critical
- 1:58spirit, especially if you've got some church hurt and no church
- 2:03is perfect. And be careful because there's
- 2:07an old theologian in America named Jonathan Edwards, and he
- 2:09says if you idolize, you'll demonize.
- 2:12And so if you go into a church and like this is the best church
- 2:14ever, well, every church has got its faults and flaws and at some
- 2:18point you're going to find them. And you could go from idolizing
- 2:20to demonizing. So just go in and say the
- 2:23leaders are sinners, the people are sinners, and I'm a Sinner.
- 2:26And we're all doing the best we can under the grace of God and
- 2:29put some grace on it and give some time to it.
- 2:33But I would go for a couple of months.
- 2:34And I would say if you're a man, when we moved to Arizona and we
- 2:37were first looking for a church, I would go to churches before I
- 2:41brought my wife and kids and I would go check it out.
- 2:45And if it wasn't good, I would get up and leave.
- 2:48And then I didn't have to have my wife and kids be part of that
- 2:52process. And then when we found it, you
- 2:55know, when we'd find a church that we liked, then I'd be like,
- 2:57hey, babe, let's load up the kids.
- 2:58Let's go, 'cause it's my job as head of household and, and
- 3:02husband and father to sort of lead the charge.
- 3:05And if we're in a church that we don't like and we got to get up
- 3:08and leave and go check the kids out, it's all kind of awkward.
- 3:11And I just didn't want to do that to my family.
- 3:13And so, yeah, Bible teaching, good marriage and leadership,
- 3:17evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in the lives of the
- 3:20people. And, and then secondarily, you
- 3:23know, if you have some particular needs for family or
- 3:26marriage or whatever, does it meet those needs?
- 3:29And then and then, yeah, lastly, the husband, the father should
- 3:32be the one to do the homework, to do the research.
- 3:35Of course he does it with his wife, but don't just make your
- 3:38wife do all the research. You go there and say, I don't
- 3:41like this one. It's your responsibility to do
- 3:44the homework and to lead the family.
- 3:47OK, how important? Here's a question.
- 3:50How important is baptism for a new believer?
- 3:53Is it mandatory? Yes.
- 3:56So the Bible says repent and be baptized, right?
- 4:00Repent, turn from sin, trust in Jesus, be baptized.
- 4:05That is going public with your faith and it is declaring your
- 4:10allegiance publicly. And it, it used to be in the
- 4:15early church when they would baptize someone, they would ask
- 4:18them, do you renounce the devil and all his works?
- 4:22It, it is really a public declaration of a complete shift
- 4:26in allegiance. And now Jesus is my God, my
- 4:30Lord, my Savior. I am 100% devoted to him and I
- 4:35publicly align myself with him. I I'm convinced that baptism is
- 4:41also a means of grace. And so like communion, those are
- 4:46sacraments. It's a means of grace.
- 4:48It's where the Holy Spirit is present in a powerful present,
- 4:54anointing, empowering, encouraging way because you're
- 4:59walking in obedience. Jesus said to, you know, we're
- 5:03supposed to go and baptize people in the name of the
- 5:05Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, which of course is the Trinity.
- 5:08So this is obedience and it is commanded, but it's commanded in
- 5:14part so that you can receive the blessing of the grace that comes
- 5:19through the obedience. And so, yeah, the, the, the, the
- 5:23Bible shows people getting saved and then baptized immediately.
- 5:29And so you should get baptized. If you are a Christian, you
- 5:33should get baptized in a public way.
- 5:36And baptism shows the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus
- 5:40and how water cleanses us from filth.
- 5:42Jesus cleanses us from sin. And so baptism, it looks back to
- 5:47Jesus resurrection, it looks forward to our resurrection.
- 5:52And it also reminds us that in Christ our old life is buried
- 5:58and dead and our new life with Christ is begun.
- 6:01And so there's a lot that is happening in baptism.
- 6:07And I'll just be honest, it is one of those really remarkable
- 6:11days in your life. It's like your wedding day.
- 6:14There's a few days in your life that are sort of historic
- 6:17moments and they're mile markers in your walk with Christ.
- 6:21Baptism is just that. And so that would be my strong
- 6:24encouragement. Yes, repent and be baptized in
- 6:27the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit as soon as
- 6:31possible after you become a believer in Jesus Christ.
- 6:34How about this one? Here's a question, is it OK to
- 6:40date a non believer not yet saved but attends church?
- 6:46Well, you shouldn't date a non believer because you can't marry
- 6:52a non believer. You got to ask yourself what is
- 6:54the point of dating? A Christian should believe in
- 6:58intentional dating, and that means that the intent of dating
- 7:03is to find a spouse and get married.
- 7:05Intentional dating means you don't.
- 7:07You're not dating multiple people, just one, and that
- 7:10you're not dating without a clear objective.
- 7:14You're dating with the objective of coming to the conclusion is
- 7:17this my spouse? Is this going to be my husband,
- 7:19my wife? So the point of dating is to get
- 7:22married. Well, if you can't marry an
- 7:25unbeliever, don't date an unbeliever because dating,
- 7:28intentional dating is the process that leads to marriage.
- 7:31And what can happen is if you start dating an unbeliever,
- 7:35maybe they go to church with you, but you're, you're never
- 7:39really sure. Like are they, are they doing
- 7:42the Jesus thing because they want to be with me?
- 7:44Or even if we weren't together, would they be with Jesus?
- 7:47And so you want them to have Christian friends, other people
- 7:51that are helping evangelize them, walk the process with
- 7:54them, you know, bring them to church and and you can be
- 7:57friends with them, but you can't have a romantic relationship.
- 8:01And other people should be tagged in.
- 8:02Let's say it's a guy dating a girl.
- 8:04Introduce her to great girls at the church.
- 8:06Encourage those relationships. Let those girls be friends of
- 8:09hers. Let those girls evangelize her.
- 8:11You're still a friend of hers. But until she comes to her own
- 8:14faith, until she's walking with Jesus on her own, you can't walk
- 8:17with her because if she's not walking with Jesus, you can't be
- 8:21walking with her. And if you start dating someone,
- 8:24what happens is usually you end up sort of compromising your
- 8:28values, sleeping together and or what happens is you start
- 8:33drifting in your faith and and then you're not actually strong
- 8:38in your relationship with God. And that's a terrible foundation
- 8:41for a marriage. The highest rate of divorce are
- 8:45two people that practice different faiths.
- 8:47The lowest rates of divorce are people who are Bible believing,
- 8:51church attending, Jesus loving Christians.
- 8:54They actually have the the best odds of, you know, a successful
- 8:57marriage. So yeah.
- 8:59And the other thing is too is like if if they don't know
- 9:02Jesus, they don't really understand you.
- 9:04If they're not under the authority of the Bible, you're
- 9:07not going to be able to come to agreement.
- 9:09If they don't have the Holy Spirit, the two of you are going
- 9:12to have an impossible time sort of walking the same Rd.
- 9:16together. And if they don't know Jesus,
- 9:19they don't really understand you.
- 9:20Because if you are a Christian, the most important person in
- 9:24your whole life is Jesus. And if, if that's true and they
- 9:28don't know Jesus, they don't really even understand you.
- 9:31I couldn't imagine Grace and I when we're married, You know,
- 9:35we're coming up on 35 years married next August, a year from
- 9:39August. But we're under the authority of
- 9:41God's word. So we don't have to argue.
- 9:43We need to study and obey. We pray together.
- 9:46My wife held me and I've got a long day and prayed over me
- 9:50today and I prayed over her last night.
- 9:52I couldn't imagine a marriage where we weren't praying over
- 9:54each other and under the authority of God's word together
- 9:57and church, we worship together, we hold hands and we worship God
- 10:00together and we show unity in the, in the, in the, in the
- 10:05worship of our God. And so all that to say, getting
- 10:08married is very easy. Staying married is very hard.
- 10:13Staying happily married is very, very hard.
- 10:16And even people that have Jesus find it to be very hard.
- 10:19And if you don't have Jesus, it's impossible.
- 10:22So hopefully you know if they are to be your spouse, they will
- 10:26get saved, come to their own convictions, and then you'll be
- 10:29able to date as Christians go through a premarital process,
- 10:34see if you should be married, and if wise counsel and maybe
- 10:38parents or church members speak into it, then you move toward
- 10:42marriage. So it's friendship, intentional
- 10:44dating, engagement, marriage. If that's the direction you're
- 10:49going and they don't know Jesus, you should not be dating them.
