Latest / Twin Cities Territory / As losses pile up, are Twins looking like trade-deadline sellers?
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Oh, a bad couple of days for the Twins as
- 0:06Speaker 1: they're losing streak hits four games, all of the losses
- 0:10Speaker 1: pretty deflating and lacking any sort of punch from the
- 0:15Speaker 1: Twins as they now are four games under five hundred
- 0:18Speaker 1: again forty nine and fifty three and fading in both
- 0:21Speaker 1: the AL Central and the AL Wildcard race, raising all
- 0:25Speaker 1: sorts of questions about what this team's going to do
- 0:27Speaker 1: ahead of the trade deadline. This is Twin City's Territory
- 0:30Speaker 1: Your Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I am Zach Pierce of the Athletic joined by Dan Hayes,
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Athletics, Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, longtime
- 0:39Speaker 1: Major leaguer and former Minnesota Twins pitcher. Guys, no other
- 0:44Speaker 1: way to put it, just a bad stretch of baseball.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Twins have been outscored thirty four to nine since Saturday.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The bats haven't been there, usually reliable starting pitchers have
- 0:54Speaker 1: not performed. We'll get to all that here in the show.
- 0:56Speaker 1: But Dan, Dan's had a front row seat to this
- 0:59Speaker 1: whole losing st week. What's what's it been like to
- 1:01Speaker 1: see Dan?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Mh Wow? Yeah, wow, in a bad way.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It's just been like the first three games were just
- 1:12Speaker 3: non competitive. They you know, Taj Bradley got hit hard
- 1:17Speaker 3: on Saturday uncharacteristically you're going for a series win. You
- 1:23Speaker 3: follow that up the next day and the blowout. Struggled
- 1:27Speaker 3: and yeah, what what was that?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Do not do that again? Please?
- 1:32Speaker 4: Do you have the phone vertical?
- 1:34Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:35Speaker 2: I do have the phone vertical. Yeah. I don't think
- 1:37Speaker 2: there's anything we can do about that.
- 1:39Speaker 1: All right, we're one shot, We're not We're not gonna
- 1:43Speaker 1: shot today, all right, Yes.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Good to know.
- 1:49Speaker 3: No, Zebbie Matthews struggled and was just you know, I mean,
- 1:53Speaker 3: it was terrible.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Saturday. Sunday was terrible. That was just defeating. They come
- 1:57Speaker 2: here Monday.
- 1:58Speaker 3: That's the eye opening one where Joe Ryan gives up
- 2:02Speaker 3: six home runs and you know.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I knew it was a franchise record.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I did not know until Zach just showed us a
- 2:07Speaker 3: few minutes ago that that was the most home runs
- 2:09Speaker 3: surrendered by any pitcher in baseball history, and that there
- 2:13Speaker 3: are twelve guys have done that. But that was just
- 2:17Speaker 3: it is, and it's not a club that you're trying
- 2:19Speaker 3: to get into. It's not the one you're it's not
- 2:23Speaker 3: the one you're standing outside of and trying to tip
- 2:25Speaker 3: the bouncer to get into that club. You are trying
- 2:28Speaker 3: to tip the bouncer to keep you out of that club.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Just really like uncharacteristic for Joe.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know, it's funny the Houston start that he'd gotten
- 2:39Speaker 3: all those unearned runs, the earned runs charged unearned runs
- 2:44Speaker 3: that took his era down by half a point. Well
- 2:47Speaker 3: that half point went back on their eight runs. Six
- 2:52Speaker 3: homers just looked out of sorts, and it kind of
- 2:57Speaker 3: was fitting because that's how the Twins have looked last night.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Not quite as out of sorts, just still sloppy. A
- 3:06Speaker 3: few missed plays.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Here last night, so that's good.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they were for they were winning for two and ins.
- 3:14Speaker 3: And and I will say like I was struck after
- 3:17Speaker 3: the game that we walked into the clubhouse and there
- 3:20Speaker 3: was some conversation going. There was life in there, no music,
- 3:23Speaker 3: but there were guys like it wasn't quiet, it wasn't
- 3:27Speaker 3: like a morgue or anything like that. It was actually
- 3:31Speaker 3: somewhat active, which made me think, I don't know what
- 3:34Speaker 3: they took from it, but that they were engaged and
- 3:36Speaker 3: they weren't like hanging their heads the way they pretty
- 3:39Speaker 3: much had been the previous three games.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So maybe this was we didn't get our.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Asses kicked as bad kind of loss, and they were
- 3:47Speaker 3: like reacting to that, but it wasn't as quiet. So
- 3:50Speaker 3: I don't know what to make of that. I just
- 3:52Speaker 3: know this is four games at the worst time for
- 3:55Speaker 3: the for the Twins to show the front office what
- 3:58Speaker 3: they're about.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I don't know what to make of it from these
- 4:04Speaker 1: four games. And we mentioned the Joe Ryan six homer
- 4:07Speaker 1: outing on Monday, but I'll just show it on the
- 4:11Speaker 1: screen for those watching on YouTube. One of twelve players
- 4:14Speaker 1: now to have ever allowed six homers in a game.
- 4:17Speaker 1: No one's allowed more. Seven of them have happened since
- 4:20Speaker 1: two thousand and four, and the other five are all
- 4:23Speaker 1: between nineteen thirty and nineteen forty, so he's just the seventh,
- 4:28Speaker 1: seventh and sort of the modern era of baseball. And
- 4:31Speaker 1: my favorite part about this graphic is that Tim Wakefield
- 4:34Speaker 1: did it in August two thousand and four, and it's
- 4:36Speaker 1: still got the win. Five innings pitched, six homers allowed.
- 4:40Speaker 1: But the Red Sox went to town on Detroit that day,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Sports Reference dot Com with the stats, Thank you to them.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But Tyler, like, what do you make of it? I mean,
- 4:50Speaker 1: obviously sometimes people have bad starts, but that was historically rough.
- 4:55Speaker 4: It was an interesting one.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Like I'm very obviously like wasn't sharp, you know, so
- 5:01Speaker 6: whatever led to that Dan hit on. You know, he
- 5:04Speaker 6: may not have been able to throw his regular side
- 5:06Speaker 6: in between because of the All Star Game.
- 5:08Speaker 4: You know, pitching in that game is great and it's
- 5:11Speaker 4: something you want to do forever. It's you know, you
- 5:13Speaker 4: grew up wanting to do it.
- 5:15Speaker 6: Hindsight, Joe probably wishes he had done a little something
- 5:18Speaker 6: else in between outings. But you know, it's one to
- 5:21Speaker 6: I think sounds like the vibes haven't changed.
- 5:24Speaker 7: You know.
- 5:25Speaker 6: The guys are they know what's going on. They're not
- 5:27Speaker 6: paying again, you know that. It's like he said, it
- 5:30Speaker 6: wasn't like a morgue.
- 5:31Speaker 4: It's it's just.
- 5:32Speaker 6: A little rust that I think he had his velo
- 5:34Speaker 6: is down. His location wasn't very good either, you know,
- 5:38Speaker 6: and they're the Guardians almost misspoke. The Guardians have a
- 5:43Speaker 6: few lefties. They have a big lefty that he's hit
- 5:46Speaker 6: two balls now that were like I height for home runs.
- 5:50Speaker 6: And I don't know if Cleveland's got yet.
- 5:53Speaker 4: It's a big it's a newer kid.
- 5:54Speaker 6: I don't know his name, but he so I believe
- 5:58Speaker 6: in Minneapolis in the last two I think he hit
- 6:00Speaker 6: a ball up there as well. And Chris jian Menez
- 6:04Speaker 6: was actually talking about it on the Cleveland broadcast. You know,
- 6:07Speaker 6: they had the machine set up on the field, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 6: probably to be at Joe's slot and release height, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 6: to mimic him correctly, and it looked like they had
- 6:19Speaker 6: done some work and it paid off because they.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Weren't getting fooled by much.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Granted, when you miss meddle with everything, it tends to
- 6:27Speaker 6: go far, you know, and that's just kind of part
- 6:29Speaker 6: of baseball. But some of those pitches, especially the ones
- 6:32Speaker 6: that were elevated, you know, the ninety two to ninety
- 6:34Speaker 6: three miles an hour at the top or above the
- 6:36Speaker 6: zone that they were just squaring up. Like Rokio's ball,
- 6:40Speaker 6: I believe was like a top corner of the zone
- 6:42Speaker 6: inside to a lefty and he just clipped it. And so,
- 6:45Speaker 6: you know, I think Joe had a little rust, a
- 6:48Speaker 6: little lack of sharpness, but I think Cleveland came out
- 6:51Speaker 6: ready to face Joe Ryan, and they nailed their scatter report.
- 6:55Speaker 6: You know, it happens. Balls don't normally leave the yard
- 6:58Speaker 6: like that. That's, you know, thely of it. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 6: could have they have been four doubles and two homers
- 7:03Speaker 6: in another park maybe, but you know, it's just one
- 7:06Speaker 6: that you gotta just flesh that one, you know, as
- 7:10Speaker 6: Tory Hunter, I remember saying when I first got up,
- 7:12Speaker 6: it was you know, flesh it.
- 7:13Speaker 4: You got another game tomorrow.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:15Speaker 6: In Joe's case, he's got to start a few days,
- 7:17Speaker 6: so he'll have to chew on that one for a minute.
- 7:19Speaker 6: But I think he comes out guns blazing after this,
- 7:22Speaker 6: after a normal week and gets back into his routine.
- 7:26Speaker 3: He he definitely asking around afterwards, was like, was there
- 7:31Speaker 3: any tipping going on?
- 7:33Speaker 2: No, there was no tipping going on.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Was there asking about why he didn't make the start
- 7:39Speaker 3: or why he didn't throw a bullpen?
- 7:41Speaker 2: After the All Star Game?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Sounded like a long week and physically just wasn't a
- 7:46Speaker 3: down spot where it was like, hey, we can get
- 7:49Speaker 3: through this. But it certainly made a difference, and I
- 7:51Speaker 3: think some of the loss of velocity. Look, you're already down,
- 7:55Speaker 3: You're getting your butt handed to you. Joe Joe Very's
- 8:00Speaker 3: velocity a lot, and and you could probably tell there
- 8:03Speaker 3: was some letdown because that's the guy that gets amped
- 8:05Speaker 3: up and can can jump it up there.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But also it doesn't shock me that he was down.
- 8:11Speaker 3: In the ninety one ninety two range in that last
- 8:14Speaker 3: couple of innings, because you know, I mean, he's down
- 8:17Speaker 3: five nothing, he's down six nothing. You know, it's you're getting.
- 8:22Speaker 6: The vilas, were all getting similar. Everything is kind of blending.
- 8:24Speaker 6: It was just so weird, that was what I noticed.
- 8:27Speaker 6: There wasn't a big separation, and they looked pretty comfortable
- 8:30Speaker 6: in the box, and you know that's never a hitters
- 8:34Speaker 6: are just up there like it's a Sunday stroll in
- 8:36Speaker 6: the park.
- 8:36Speaker 4: You know, it's you don't want.
- 8:37Speaker 3: That, yeah, No, And and I mean Cleveland has been
- 8:43Speaker 3: opportunistic in this series.
- 8:45Speaker 2: We saw it in last night's game.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Kendrew Rojas gets ahead of Stephen Kuan, And that's been
- 8:50Speaker 3: one thing that I've noticed this whole trip is a
- 8:53Speaker 3: lot of two strike pitches being deposited. Rojast gets ahead
- 8:59Speaker 3: of Kwan, and granted, Kwan gave him a great at
- 9:02Speaker 3: bat in the first.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Inning, Kwan was like a ten pitch of bat and.
- 9:04Speaker 3: He flew out, but Rojas left a slider on the
- 9:07Speaker 3: inner half. You could see Jeffers wanted it away and
- 9:10Speaker 3: it's just like on the edge inside ninety five. And
- 9:15Speaker 3: someone on social media said, man, that was up in
- 9:18Speaker 3: the air for a long time.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Why didn't Buck get to it?
- 9:20Speaker 3: And it's because they don't expect Stephen Kwan to pull
- 9:23Speaker 3: that pitch.
- 9:24Speaker 2: They expect that to be hit to left field.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And you're shaded towards center and where Rojas left it
- 9:32Speaker 3: like it just cement mixed right into and Kwan's not
- 9:35Speaker 3: a very powerful guy, and he hit that off the
- 9:38Speaker 3: base of the wall in right center for a double,
- 9:40Speaker 3: and I was like, yeah, Rojas, the stuff is there.
- 9:45Speaker 3: There's no question the stuff is there in his game.
- 9:47Speaker 3: But the walks were costly. There's just been so many
- 9:51Speaker 3: mistakes by Twins pitchers on this hole. But Joe's start
- 9:54Speaker 3: really really exacerbated at that point, like it was like
- 9:58Speaker 3: everything was over the middle.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Those fast there usually high were.
- 10:02Speaker 3: At the top of the zone and being hit out
- 10:04Speaker 3: and it was just surreal to see it happening, Like
- 10:08Speaker 3: that's four homers. Wow, where's Joe's like all time list
- 10:11Speaker 3: and you're looking, You're like, oh, yeah, that's right. He's
- 10:13Speaker 3: given up home runs. He's given up five twice and
- 10:16Speaker 3: he had he had one, Duff. You were there in
- 10:18Speaker 3: San Diego in twenty twenty two, he gave up ten runs.
- 10:20Speaker 3: It was a day game. He just got absolutely obliterated.
- 10:24Speaker 3: And then the next year he gave up five in Atlanta,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and that's the one where afterwards he revealed his injury
- 10:30Speaker 3: and his groin injury and they had hurt himself in
- 10:34Speaker 3: the field, and so it was it was a very
- 10:37Speaker 3: absurd kind of performance to be there for. And afterwards
- 10:41Speaker 3: he owned it and Derek Shelton owned it and somebody
- 10:44Speaker 3: was like asking me, does he hurt and was like no.
- 10:47Speaker 3: They basically just said his stuff sucked. That's when you
- 10:50Speaker 3: break it down. That's what they came out with was
- 10:52Speaker 3: his stuff just sucked.
- 10:54Speaker 6: The numbers probably told the whole story, you know, stack
- 10:57Speaker 6: cast probably what was going to happen.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well, twins five games out in the Central. Now
- 11:04Speaker 1: White Sox and Cleveland both tied there, three and a
- 11:07Speaker 1: half out in the Wildcard. There is a lot to
- 11:11Speaker 1: come in the next thirteen days before the trade deadline,
- 11:14Speaker 1: still time to win some games and maybe turn things around,
- 11:17Speaker 1: but we will talk about what the front office might
- 11:20Speaker 1: be thinking. We'll talk about the next two games in Cleveland,
- 11:23Speaker 1: a chance still to split the series when we come back.
- 11:26Speaker 1: If you like what you hear, please toss us a
- 11:28Speaker 1: like a subscribe. However you may listen. There's a QR

- 12:22Speaker 1: fix his phone for us.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Thanks Dan, I didn't warn.
- 12:24Speaker 1: You that this this was my show today, this ad.
- 12:27Speaker 1: But yes, as you guys know, I finally made it
- 12:30Speaker 1: to a Twins game. It's getting a little while ago now,
- 12:33Speaker 1: a couple few weeks ago against Colorado. But that's why
- 12:36Speaker 1: I want to give our sponsor of today's video a

- 13:36Speaker 1: use it later. Thank you, Seek Geek. Four straight losses
- 13:43Speaker 1: all pretty depressing if you're a Twins fan. Forty nine
- 13:47Speaker 1: to fifty three, And once again we come back to
- 13:50Speaker 1: the question that we have been debating all month and
- 13:52Speaker 1: longer than that actually, and we'll probably continue to debate
- 13:55Speaker 1: over the next couple weeks. Have the Twins gone from
- 13:59Speaker 1: buyers to sell It was just a couple of weeks ago, Dan,
- 14:02Speaker 1: when Tom Polad was talking about the importance of adding
- 14:05Speaker 1: to this team and showing investment for the guys in
- 14:08Speaker 1: the clubhouse and for the fans who endured obviously that
- 14:10Speaker 1: fire sale at the end of last year. Don't necessarily
- 14:15Speaker 1: want to let four games change all of that. But
- 14:17Speaker 1: it sure looks like this team is more than just
- 14:20Speaker 1: a bullpen arm away from contention at this point, and
- 14:23Speaker 1: it's at least got to be on the table now
- 14:25Speaker 1: that this thing is going in the other direction.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It has to be.
- 14:30Speaker 3: And this is the downturn on the roller coaster that
- 14:33Speaker 3: you know you expect, and you're going through this. There's
- 14:37Speaker 3: still thirteen days whatever it is into August third, and
- 14:41Speaker 3: there's twisson turns at all times, and the Twins are
- 14:45Speaker 3: going through this stretch where it is day to day
- 14:48Speaker 3: and you you know they got to turning around quick.
- 14:52Speaker 3: But there might be some staying power with this four
- 14:55Speaker 3: game losing streak. And the reason why I say that
- 14:57Speaker 3: is it's against Cleveland, it's against the Cargo Cubs. This
- 15:01Speaker 3: is the meat grinder portion of their schedule and they're
- 15:04Speaker 3: not looking great. They're gonna need to show something these
- 15:07Speaker 3: two final games against the Guardians and get back on track,
- 15:11Speaker 3: because you need to show your front office something that
- 15:14Speaker 3: you have some life against good teams.
- 15:17Speaker 2: If if they were going to.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Come out and go one on one and end up
- 15:20Speaker 3: on two and five on this trip and dig themselves
- 15:23Speaker 3: into a hole, you got a long way to go,
- 15:27Speaker 3: and you can get there because the A's and the
- 15:29Speaker 3: Kansas City Royals are coming to town, and those are
- 15:31Speaker 3: two lesser than teams. But you would like to show
- 15:36Speaker 3: that you can do this a little bit against some
- 15:37Speaker 3: good teams, and I think that makes these two really important.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Look at this.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Point, Look, you can't look at it and go man
- 15:47Speaker 3: Sell Sell Sell, you got you gotta ditch the recency bias.
- 15:51Speaker 2: You can't just go off vibes.
- 15:54Speaker 3: But it certainly has been disappointing just because of the
- 15:58Speaker 3: quality of the competition and how poorly the Twins have played.
- 16:02Speaker 3: It has been uncharacteristic between Todds, Bradley and Joe Ryan
- 16:06Speaker 3: seeing them pitch the way that they did, especially given
- 16:08Speaker 3: how they had been pitching, and so can you just
- 16:12Speaker 3: chalk it up as one bad start.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Possibly, Joe Ryan was.
- 16:15Speaker 3: So dominant at Yankee Stadium right in that Sunday to
- 16:19Speaker 3: clinch a series victory. Joe Ryan's had so many big
- 16:22Speaker 3: moments for you that certainly you can see why you
- 16:26Speaker 3: would go look at Monday and say, yeah, he's coming
- 16:28Speaker 3: off the All Star he's tired, But you need this
- 16:32Speaker 3: show something soon because the thing is is that there
- 16:36Speaker 3: are a lot of good players still in this roster
- 16:39Speaker 3: that like this.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Team might be better off trading.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Like if you were to look at this from the
- 16:44Speaker 3: big picture, if you were to look at this and say,
- 16:47Speaker 3: you know, let's pretend like the ownership was in a
- 16:49Speaker 3: good spot with the fan base right and there was
- 16:52Speaker 3: no pre existing conditions that were kind of trying to
- 16:57Speaker 3: keep the team going the right way. If you were
- 17:00Speaker 3: at that spot and the fans were trusting what you
- 17:02Speaker 3: were doing, which certainly is not the case, and the
- 17:06Speaker 3: fans want Twins to.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Be winning and adding and all doing all that.
- 17:10Speaker 3: But if you were in that spot, you would look
- 17:12Speaker 3: at this and go, man, you know, Joe Ryan's gonna
- 17:14Speaker 3: be a free agent after next season, and he's got
- 17:17Speaker 3: a lot of trade value right now. And man, Trevor Larnick,
- 17:20Speaker 3: his trade value has probably not been this high since
- 17:23Speaker 3: he was a prospect early on in his career. This
- 17:27Speaker 3: is the guy that Twins have been trying to trade
- 17:28Speaker 3: for two plus years because.
- 17:30Speaker 2: They had a bunch of left handed outfielders.
- 17:32Speaker 3: I shouldn't say they've actively been trying, but I mean, like,
- 17:35Speaker 3: with the amount of left handed outfielders they have in
- 17:37Speaker 3: the system, you know, Walker Jenkins is coming, Emma Rodriguez
- 17:41Speaker 3: is right there with those guys all there you would
- 17:44Speaker 3: be opportunistic and look to trade Trevor Larnick if you
- 17:46Speaker 3: can get value.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Well, his value's never been higher.
- 17:49Speaker 3: And certainly with Brian Jeffers, like you don't want to
- 17:52Speaker 3: screw up the vibes in the clubhouse, but Ryan Jeffers
- 17:55Speaker 3: is a free agent after this year, you have two
- 17:57Speaker 3: other catchers. Is it possible that you would trade him
- 18:00Speaker 3: to try and improve a different area? I mean, those
- 18:03Speaker 3: are all real questions where if you're looking from you know,
- 18:06Speaker 3: the view from ten thousand feet, that's those guys would
- 18:09Speaker 3: be realistically looked.
- 18:10Speaker 2: At as being traded.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And unfortunately, I think the Twins are putting themselves in
- 18:15Speaker 3: a spot where you have to consider those questions unless
- 18:18Speaker 3: you can turn it around.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Tyler, does there come a point, even in a clubhouse,
- 18:23Speaker 1: where you you're like, yeah, the better option is probably
- 18:26Speaker 1: not to trade away the future for this team.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Yeah, you just as a player. It's so hard, especially
- 18:34Speaker 6: like depending on your status and the organization. Like I
- 18:37Speaker 6: was fortunate, you know, we had a group that had
- 18:39Speaker 6: been together since twenty twelve, basically like most of us
- 18:42Speaker 6: got drafted together, you know, Kepler and Polanco overall like
- 18:46Speaker 6: a year before us I believe maybe two. But we
- 18:50Speaker 6: all grew up together, all got to the big leagues together,
- 18:52Speaker 6: and so to us, like losing anybody was like life changing.
- 18:57Speaker 6: You know, these guys, they've they've all played for several teams.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Now it feels like, at least for the veteran half,
- 19:03Speaker 6: the young guys are all early in their careers and
- 19:06Speaker 6: so there may not be as huge as a hit,
- 19:10Speaker 6: you know, other than them being friends.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Like obviously that sucks. You know, your your locker MAT's
- 19:14Speaker 4: gone one day.
- 19:16Speaker 6: You know, Taylor Rodgers and I were hanging out when
- 19:18Speaker 6: we got snowed out for he got traded, you know,
- 19:21Speaker 6: and it's just a it's a weird uh, it's a
- 19:23Speaker 6: weird experience, is a weird time. And you know, as
- 19:25Speaker 6: a player, it's like you try not to think about
- 19:28Speaker 6: it too much, but when you're the name that's in
- 19:30Speaker 6: those talks, like it's each guy handles things differently. Some
- 19:34Speaker 6: rise to the occasion, some don't like it at all.
- 19:37Speaker 6: You know, some guys are having meetings with the front office, like, hey,
- 19:40Speaker 6: what do we got going on? You know, I'm sure,
- 19:43Speaker 6: especially a guy like Jeffers, like this is a huge
- 19:45Speaker 6: year for him, Like he he may want to have
- 19:48Speaker 6: some input on it. Like it's there's just so many
- 19:51Speaker 6: different conversations to be had. And the sad part is
- 19:56Speaker 6: or the good part, I guess is the the fixes
- 19:59Speaker 6: just win games. At the end of the day, Like
- 20:01Speaker 6: you get hot and play well, you're not gonna have
- 20:04Speaker 6: any issues. But you lose four games in a row
- 20:07Speaker 6: to two better than average opponents, you know, it gets
- 20:12Speaker 6: ugly for you quickly, and these conversations start. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 6: there's gonna probably be articles that come out today and
- 20:18Speaker 6: tomorrow about what are the options now that they lost
- 20:21Speaker 6: this week? You know, And that's what's so crazy. As
- 20:24Speaker 6: you get closer to this deadline, it does so fast
- 20:27Speaker 6: turn into just the house is burning. You know, sell, sell, sell,
- 20:32Speaker 6: and you know it's it changes so fast, and you know,
- 20:35Speaker 6: the one year we sold and we've still made the
- 20:38Speaker 6: wild card, so it's there's it's also not the end
- 20:41Speaker 6: of the year, like you get rid of some guys
- 20:43Speaker 6: in the short term, it's like, man, we had a
- 20:46Speaker 6: chance here, and then it's like or you keep going
- 20:49Speaker 6: and play. You know that guy's gonna go do what
- 20:51Speaker 6: it reed does anyways. But you know, it's it's so
- 20:54Speaker 6: individual player to player and team to team that you
- 20:57Speaker 6: just don't know what's going to happen. But I think
- 21:00Speaker 6: what the nucleus of the team is there. You know,
- 21:02Speaker 6: it's just whatever move you make, hopefully it doesn't hurt
- 21:05Speaker 6: you in the long run. I guess psychs no.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Like with Larnick, it's this is not advocating for
- 21:13Speaker 3: trading laren because Trenor Lawrence having an awesome season and
- 21:16Speaker 3: he's been a force for them at the top of
- 21:18Speaker 3: the lineup. But you look at it and you go, man,
- 21:20Speaker 3: Walker Jenkins is on a tear right now at Triple A.
- 21:23Speaker 3: And if you can get something for Larnick, and you know,
- 21:26Speaker 3: I know teams like Tampa Bay like teams that are
- 21:29Speaker 3: platoon heavy love looking at those that right handed split
- 21:34Speaker 3: where he's got like an eight to fifty nine oh
- 21:35Speaker 3: ps against right handed pitching.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Can they give him major league give you major league
- 21:40Speaker 2: help back?
- 21:41Speaker 3: And then you bring up Walker Jenkins, who probably is
- 21:43Speaker 3: a better defender but isn't gonna be quite the hitter
- 21:46Speaker 3: as experienced wise. I mean, the potential is there for sure,
- 21:50Speaker 3: and what what would that look like? What would that
- 21:52Speaker 3: what would that drop off be? And you know there's
- 21:55Speaker 3: a chance you might end up okay there. But Larnick's
- 21:57Speaker 3: having a great year and he's like a one to
- 21:59Speaker 3: sixth war player right now. And it's like, man, plus,
- 22:02Speaker 3: he's been here forever and the guys like him, and
- 22:05Speaker 3: he knows ball and he's one of those noseball guys,
- 22:08Speaker 3: just a ballplayer and loves talking the game and and
- 22:11Speaker 3: adds so much.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Value to the clubhouse.
- 22:13Speaker 3: And it's like and Ryan Jeffers, like, that's probably one
- 22:17Speaker 3: of your smartest.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Guys in the room.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And he is the ABS king, although Vic Caroten has
- 22:24Speaker 3: done a really nice job too, But Jeffer's been with
- 22:27Speaker 3: his staff forever. And what does losing that mean and
- 22:29Speaker 3: what does that look like? And if you if you
- 22:32Speaker 3: get rid of Joe Ryan, it's like you really do
- 22:35Speaker 3: better get.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Something yeah, yeah, and you better get something.
- 22:40Speaker 2: To center fielder. You better talk to your center fielder.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Otherwise Cherney churn your your meter.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Your meter might be coming back if I mean, because
- 22:51Speaker 3: that's the thing, like if you trade your pitching, how
- 22:54Speaker 3: are you gonna convince that guy in center that not
- 22:59Speaker 3: to say I want out? And they're they're doing their
- 23:01Speaker 3: best to do that, but you know, trading your best
- 23:04Speaker 3: picture certainly would throw a wrinkle into the future plans,
- 23:09Speaker 3: and it can get ugly around.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Here real fast.
- 23:12Speaker 3: You'd have to go out and trade him to like
- 23:15Speaker 3: in Atlanta, or to a Philly where you get like
- 23:18Speaker 3: Andrew Painter, Like you need to get a guy that's
- 23:20Speaker 3: right there that's on the cusp of becoming that guy.
- 23:24Speaker 3: But that's a huge risky run, and you know, it's
- 23:29Speaker 3: it's a tough spot to be in and it's certainly
- 23:32Speaker 3: not the conversation I think the front office was hoping
- 23:34Speaker 3: to have four days ago. It's like because if you
- 23:37Speaker 3: if you're looking the other way, you know, you look
- 23:39Speaker 3: at a bullpen game last night, Man, I don't know.
- 23:42Speaker 2: The bullpen games are just.
- 23:45Speaker 3: You're you're in a big, huge game playing Cleveland, and
- 23:51Speaker 3: you throw a bullpen game out there, and there is
- 23:53Speaker 3: nothing quite like there's no picture that's necessarily totally on
- 23:57Speaker 3: the hook for that right.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It's not one guy that's riding on.
- 24:01Speaker 3: It's get through it past the baton, hope, guys get out.
- 24:05Speaker 3: It's a really challenging like to make that guy go
- 24:09Speaker 3: up against Parker Messik all Star, who looked absolutely dominant.
- 24:13Speaker 2: His fastball was so good. We saw really awkward swings.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yet that was the closest game of the last four so.
- 24:21Speaker 2: It was right.
- 24:23Speaker 3: But you know, I mean, you need to if you're
- 24:26Speaker 3: if you're on the other end of this conversation, you
- 24:28Speaker 3: need to have you probably need to add a starting picture.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Although I think we'll see very soon Connor prelip come back.
- 24:34Speaker 3: He threw three really good innings at Saint Paul there
- 24:38Speaker 3: at night and showed that his blister wasn't a problem.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Struck out three.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Uh, they could see him at home this weekend. You
- 24:46Speaker 3: need a starting picture, though, you need relief help. You
- 24:49Speaker 3: know this isn't You're right, this is not just add
- 24:52Speaker 3: a reliever. This is probably add two arms, maybe three arms.
- 24:58Speaker 3: It's it's a tough spot to like. We should push
- 25:01Speaker 3: our chips in. After this four.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Days we'll finish up on that topic. I will speak
- 25:06Speaker 1: on behalf of all fans when we come back after this.

- 26:13Speaker 1: Tyler mentioned that there would be articles coming out talking
- 26:16Speaker 1: about what the twins should do at the deadline, and
- 26:18Speaker 1: look at that, Dan's already written one. Check it out
- 26:20Speaker 1: right now on the Athletic Dan is there in Cleveland
- 26:24Speaker 1: for this series and wrote about the vibe in the
- 26:26Speaker 1: clubhouse and how the twins are in danger of becoming
- 26:30Speaker 1: trade deadline sellers right now on the internets, the Athletic
- 26:35Speaker 1: dot Com, there's an in between option two here, right,
- 26:40Speaker 1: guys like you to your point of everything, like and
- 26:42Speaker 1: I think the whole fans are on edge and they
- 26:46Speaker 1: could mutiny. Thing is true, but also like, that's because
- 26:53Speaker 1: last year was so frustrating, because the team was supposed
- 26:56Speaker 1: to be building towards something. Once that happened, that change
- 27:00Speaker 1: the context of this season entirely, and the fact that
- 27:02Speaker 1: they were that were even talking about maybe buying at
- 27:04Speaker 1: this point remains a pleasant surprise. And so I think
- 27:10Speaker 1: some fans, maybe not the ones that show up in
- 27:12Speaker 1: your meant replies Dan on X, but I think some
- 27:16Speaker 1: fans are rational enough to say, like, I don't know
- 27:19Speaker 1: that I want you to buy right now. Like the
- 27:24Speaker 1: whole strategy has been to build for the future. It
- 27:26Speaker 1: looks like maybe that's off to a good start. So
- 27:29Speaker 1: just hang on to the pieces that can help with that,
- 27:32Speaker 1: and don't trade away the people who are going to
- 27:35Speaker 1: help this team win in two, three years or however
- 27:37Speaker 1: long it's going to take. I don't know, I don't
- 27:40Speaker 1: I guess what I'm saying is, I don't if a
- 27:41Speaker 1: couple names get traded and there's good logic behind it,
- 27:44Speaker 1: like Jeffers, maybe not Joe Ryan, that one would be
- 27:47Speaker 1: a tougher self. I think I don't think you're going
- 27:51Speaker 1: to see the same outrage as long as it feels
- 27:54Speaker 1: like something, there's progress towards something.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I agree.
- 27:58Speaker 3: And also I think the he's already happened with the fans.
- 28:01Speaker 3: I mean we're seeing it in the attendance numbers. Yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 3: you've already the ship has already sailed, Like the fans
- 28:07Speaker 3: are pissed, So you do have to win to get
- 28:09Speaker 3: back people.
- 28:11Speaker 2: So I agree with you.
- 28:13Speaker 3: I think the more rational fans are not going to
- 28:16Speaker 3: be You've already ripped off the band aid by taking
- 28:19Speaker 3: with last year's trading ten guys, with cutting payroll by
- 28:23Speaker 3: thirty million a couple of years ago, with not adding
- 28:26Speaker 3: with just adding Trevor Richards at the twenty twenty four deadline,
- 28:30Speaker 3: You've already done all the damage. But so potentially diving
- 28:36Speaker 3: all the way in right now, just pushing all your
- 28:37Speaker 3: chips in might actually pissed off the rational ones who
- 28:41Speaker 3: were like, hey, there's a plan here, let's let's just
- 28:43Speaker 3: see it through. And because you run the risk of
- 28:46Speaker 3: like going with well, what are we doing now?
- 28:49Speaker 2: Like what is the plan?
- 28:51Speaker 3: If we say I don't see them trading Walker Jenkins,
- 28:54Speaker 3: I don't see them trading Kaylin Culpepper, it wouldn't be
- 28:57Speaker 3: that this is not what they're gonna do. Joe Ryan
- 29:00Speaker 3: is the closest thing on this roster to that kind
- 29:04Speaker 3: of nuclear option where it's like, wait, what are we
- 29:06Speaker 3: doing here? And it's funny because that's the guy that
- 29:09Speaker 3: you easily could get paid the.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Most for and get a ton for right now.
- 29:13Speaker 3: So just kind of illustrates how tricky this all is
- 29:17Speaker 3: for Jeremy Zol and Tom Paul out right now, because
- 29:20Speaker 3: the pr hit will not be great if they trade
- 29:22Speaker 3: guys away. But again, maybe you trade the guys, maybe
- 29:27Speaker 3: you trade Jeffers and Larnik run the risk of breaking
- 29:30Speaker 3: up the group a little bit, but you improve your
- 29:35Speaker 3: roster currently by.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Doing that, by getting some pitching help back. I don't
- 29:39Speaker 2: know how it.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Plays out, and the fact that there's not a ton
- 29:42Speaker 3: of sellers out there it makes it tricky for sure.
- 29:46Speaker 3: So it's gonna be interesting, and that's the thing. Well,
- 29:49Speaker 3: it's the roller coaster. We're gonna see more dips, We're
- 29:52Speaker 3: gonna see more upswings because there's thirteen days to go
- 29:55Speaker 3: and this is that kind of time.
- 29:57Speaker 6: Well, the one I just keep thinking about the fact
- 30:00Speaker 6: that we don't know what everyone else is going to do.
- 30:02Speaker 6: There's so many teams that are kind of in that
- 30:05Speaker 6: like what do we do spot And it's like, right,
- 30:09Speaker 6: what if what if just no one gets rid of anybody?
- 30:11Speaker 6: You know, like everyone's just like, you know what, We're
- 30:14Speaker 6: not going to give anybody anything and we're going to
- 30:15Speaker 6: just go you know, I mean, it'd be incredible to watch, like,
- 30:18Speaker 6: you know, the team that started the year is just
- 30:20Speaker 6: who you're gonna go with.
- 30:21Speaker 4: But you know there'll be a move made.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Somebody's going to try and get Scooble, you know if apparently,
- 30:27Speaker 6: which is I can't even wrap my mind around him
- 30:29Speaker 6: not being a Tiger, But you know, it's there's so
- 30:32Speaker 6: many kind of that meddling five hundred ish group, like
- 30:36Speaker 6: a bad week can literally change it for anybody, and
- 30:39Speaker 6: that's what I think.
- 30:40Speaker 4: It's going to make it really interesting.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And then there's one thing that we didn't even mention
- 30:45Speaker 3: is that this all has come their their four game
- 30:48Speaker 3: losing streak while the rest of the American League, and
- 30:50Speaker 3: the Red Sox have won fourteen finally did win yesterday,
- 30:53Speaker 3: but that's that's yesterday. The White Sox are playing well,
- 30:58Speaker 3: the Guardians are well. So like, you've not only been going,
- 31:03Speaker 3: you're trending the wrong way. Other teams are starting to
- 31:05Speaker 3: separate themselves, which makes it challenging.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and like just even if you think you know
- 31:13Speaker 1: what the Twins should do, Tyler, like to your point,
- 31:16Speaker 1: doing it is another you know, like the Twins should
- 31:19Speaker 1: have a starter. Okay, great, well who who's available?
- 31:21Speaker 4: Who's going to give us a starter? You know, like,
- 31:23Speaker 4: wh what's it.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Going to cost? Do you want to pay what it costs?
- 31:27Speaker 1: It's just not like so they could be trying to
- 31:30Speaker 1: buy or sell and not do either just because they
- 31:32Speaker 1: can't find the right the right match.
- 31:34Speaker 6: Well yeah, and you can't just take a bad deal
- 31:35Speaker 6: to make a move, you know, that's the big one.
- 31:37Speaker 6: You can't just oh, this is what was available. It's like, well,
- 31:39Speaker 6: Joe's not gone until next year, so you don't have.
- 31:42Speaker 4: To move him. Yes he's valuable, right, but he will
- 31:45Speaker 4: still be valuable.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:46Speaker 4: I think you start to your weigh.
- 31:48Speaker 6: The the one that keeps going to mind is that's
- 31:50Speaker 6: and the song X guys were talking. You know, Jeffers
- 31:53Speaker 6: is hitting homers. He came back healthy like he's the
- 31:56Speaker 6: one that makes sits unfortunately, but you know, like I said,
- 31:59Speaker 6: I'm not a g nor will I ever be.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So who knows, Hey Breslo made it?
- 32:05Speaker 4: You know, you never know Cat's partner sixteen.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Well, I guess the good news for the Twins they
- 32:13Speaker 1: still have a chance to split the series in Cleveland.
- 32:16Speaker 1: There's two games left starting tonight. I have to do
- 32:20Speaker 1: the math from the Pacific times. I'm five forty Central time. Storry.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I was like, I said, I can't be right, but
- 32:25Speaker 1: it is because it's Eastern time in Cleveland, right right.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Bailey Ober today against Slade Secconi it looks like and
- 32:34Speaker 1: then TODJ. Bradley and Gavin Williams in the day game
- 32:37Speaker 1: on Thursday, the finale, so a lot of v loo.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I'm calling them must win with a question mark in
- 32:43Speaker 1: the graphic there on the screen, because I guess that's
- 32:47Speaker 1: if you're looking at it from a can this team
- 32:49Speaker 1: actually make a push. That would be a nice statement
- 32:52Speaker 1: to come off and finish this road trip with two
- 32:54Speaker 1: wins and earn a split and kind of put that
- 32:56Speaker 1: four game losing streak behind them. But if they don't,
- 32:59Speaker 1: then it really does amplify that nine game stretch to
- 33:03Speaker 1: the before the deadline A's Royals, and then at Seattle
- 33:07Speaker 1: it's here we go one player or the other.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be a lot better to be two
- 33:13Speaker 3: games under five hundred when you go home for that
- 33:16Speaker 3: than it is to be.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Five or six.
- 33:20Speaker 3: You go home six under five hundred, you're defeated and
- 33:22Speaker 3: you should sell like you don't win these two.
- 33:25Speaker 2: You lose both of them. That's it. Really.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I don't know how you come back from that. If
- 33:30Speaker 3: you don't. They are in a good spot where Bailey
- 33:33Speaker 3: is thrown well. In his two starts back from the
- 33:35Speaker 3: IL look good. In Chicago, they were still on pitch
- 33:39Speaker 3: count there, like I think he was around eighty five.
- 33:42Speaker 3: So we'll see how he handles a lefty heavy lineup
- 33:46Speaker 3: here on on Wednesday. And then Todds Bradley really needs
- 33:51Speaker 3: a big bounce back from him.
- 33:52Speaker 2: That was just I mean, he has command issues. He's
- 33:55Speaker 2: had them in his career.
- 33:56Speaker 3: It's been a thing for him, but he really avoided
- 33:59Speaker 3: them earlier this season and done a good job of it,
- 34:02Speaker 3: and like so Saturday was just so uncharacteristic for him
- 34:06Speaker 3: to coming out of the break and throwing up a
- 34:09Speaker 3: dud in Chicago like that.
- 34:11Speaker 2: They really need him to show what he has been.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Against Cleveland and get them home with a split would
- 34:18Speaker 3: be very nice, just because you just need to find
- 34:21Speaker 3: those good vibes again. And you took that four day
- 34:23Speaker 3: break and everybody really did need it. I thought that
- 34:26Speaker 3: the rest factor. That was just a very long, challenging
- 34:30Speaker 3: first half, a team rallying around each other, and there's
- 34:33Speaker 3: a lot of good things, but it is an emotional
- 34:34Speaker 3: first half where like they kind of formed an identity,
- 34:38Speaker 3: but it took a while to get there, and like
- 34:40Speaker 3: that rest seemed like it was good. But man, that
- 34:43Speaker 3: identities disappeared these first couple days because the offense hasn't
- 34:46Speaker 3: been hitting. You know, you mentioned it.
- 34:49Speaker 2: The thirty four to nine.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Well, thirty four is abysmal on the pitching side, but
- 34:54Speaker 3: nine runs in four days is not good for an
- 34:57Speaker 3: offense that got Byron Buckston back.
- 34:58Speaker 2: The last two they just have looked just kind of
- 35:02Speaker 2: lethargic and.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Not you know, you get behind, and getting behind before
- 35:07Speaker 3: for them was never a problem. And they get the
- 35:09Speaker 3: one run comeback last night in the sixth inning on
- 35:13Speaker 3: Royce Lewis's little like they called it an air I thought,
- 35:16Speaker 3: with the way Messick was throwing, and we saw a
- 35:18Speaker 3: couple of balls come off of his funk producers some
- 35:23Speaker 3: weird swings, yeah, and some right handers. The spin when
- 35:27Speaker 3: they hit the ball was so weird. Royce's spun past
- 35:31Speaker 3: Messic and it's a little number for an infield error
- 35:34Speaker 3: was what they ruled it.
- 35:35Speaker 2: But I mean, like that was the only comeback they showed.
- 35:37Speaker 3: And then after that buston, you know, Gets actually had
- 35:41Speaker 3: to put a good swing on it.
- 35:43Speaker 2: They're down four to two.
- 35:45Speaker 3: He batted with two runners on and he got Gaddis
- 35:49Speaker 3: Hunter Gaddis, who is has really pitched great.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Against the Twins over the years.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Gaddess threw him seven straight sliders, and you know, Buck
- 35:57Speaker 3: took some close ones and then he drove the one
- 36:00Speaker 3: to center field and the metrics on it were it
- 36:04Speaker 3: was a good swing. It was like one hundred point
- 36:06Speaker 3: four off the bat, hit it to the warning track
- 36:09Speaker 3: and it flew out.
- 36:10Speaker 2: But he, you know, just missed that.
- 36:13Speaker 3: That was really their chances, and they just didn't show
- 36:16Speaker 3: a lot other than that Messick was so good. It's
- 36:18Speaker 3: just been a weird four days. It has not been
- 36:21Speaker 3: like but this team has done this before. We've seen them.
- 36:24Speaker 3: They were eight games under five hundred on June eleventh. Yeah,
- 36:27Speaker 3: they fought their way back, and you just wonder if
- 36:30Speaker 3: that fight to get back to five hundred took everything
- 36:33Speaker 3: out of them, at least right now, because it you know,
- 36:36Speaker 3: it has not looked great so far.
- 36:40Speaker 1: The formula when they've been winning has been score a
- 36:42Speaker 1: bunch of runs, get a good start, and then hang
- 36:45Speaker 1: on for the ride with the bullpen, and those first
- 36:48Speaker 1: two things have not been happening in the last four days.
- 36:50Speaker 1: That's a league worst nine er from the pitching staff
- 36:55Speaker 1: since Saturday, thirty two innings, thirty two earned runs out
- 37:00Speaker 1: and as you mentioned, the bats just haven't been there
- 37:03Speaker 1: like they were when it was when it was rolling.
- 37:05Speaker 1: So Tyler, we'll see, maybe.
- 37:08Speaker 4: Think winning streak starts tonight.
- 37:10Speaker 1: What streak starts tonight?
- 37:12Speaker 4: There we go, we will see.
- 37:15Speaker 1: It's like I said, five point forty starts tonight in
- 37:17Speaker 1: Cleveland twelve ten in the afternoon on Thursday, before the
- 37:21Speaker 1: Twins come home Friday to face the former Oakland.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Athleticsnow Sacramento Vegas.
