- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to mini school, everyone.
- 0:21OK, I have many stories for you guys and I thought of like four
- 0:26more that I didn't even include when I was driving over here.
- 0:29So let's just get straight into it.
- 0:31But before I do, Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 0:34It helps us so much. It helps us grow.
- 0:36And we are trying to get to 10,000 YouTube subscribers, so
- 0:40we are almost there. Please subscribe to us on
- 0:42YouTube. OK, this is a very quick update
- 0:45to start this episode off and then I hope to never think about
- 0:49this again. But Clayton Eckard, I think
- 0:52that's how you say his name. I don't know.
- 0:53Again, I'm not a bachelor girlie, so I was not part of
- 0:55this universe. I've just been calling him
- 0:57Clayton. But I was like, at some point I
- 0:59probably need to start using his last name.
- 1:01Clayton posted private messages with Gabby Windy to prove that
- 1:06he's, I guess, tried to make things right with her in the
- 1:08past. So I guess I was wrong last week
- 1:11when I said that I thought that neither of them will ever
- 1:14address this again. Clayton responded to Gabby's
- 1:16TikTok calling him out by sharing alleged DMS that he sent
- 1:20her trying to meet up and I guess make things right with her
- 1:24since their bachelor days. So he said on Instagram,
- 1:27essentially saying it's justified to make fun of
- 1:30someone's physical appearance. Reminder, she said he looked
- 1:33like a toe to attack a passion of theirs that's changed their
- 1:37life if they hurt you in the past.
- 1:39So you're teaching your audience to be vengeful, to not forgive.
- 1:43And I don't agree with that. You have every right to be upset
- 1:46with me and what I did on the show.
- 1:48I've done everything in my power to apologize.
- 1:50I've taken accountability time and time again.
- 1:52I've reached out multiple times and extended the olive branch
- 1:56and you want nothing to do with me?
- 1:58OK so then he posted like private messages where I guess
- 2:00it proves that he's reached out to her trying to like smooth
- 2:03things over and meet up with her since their time on the bachelor
- 2:06together. You know what it's giving if you
- 2:08guys watch Summer House, it's giving W being all Sookie that
- 2:12Sierra won't be like buddy buddy with him after he fucked her
- 2:16over multiple times this past year.
- 2:19It's like W doesn't know how to act or feel when he's not
- 2:23beloved by everyone that he's around.
- 2:25And it totally changes his demeanor.
- 2:27It totally changes his personality.
- 2:29And like that is what Clayton is giving in the scenario he's
- 2:33throwing now. Now he's throwing like a hissy
- 2:35fit that she won't back down and apologize for, like hurting his
- 2:39feelings. I think he really thought his
- 2:41initial video being like, dance is my passion.
- 2:44You're bullying me. I really think that he thought
- 2:47that that was going to, you know, under him a lot of
- 2:49sympathy, but he does not understand Gabby Windy's
- 2:53audience and he does not understand Gabby Windy's new
- 2:57era. OK, the next story that I have
- 3:00for you guys, this is everywhere.
- 3:02I am sure so many of you guys have seen this.
- 3:05But one former au pair story is going viral on TikTok after she
- 3:10documented herself sneaking out of her host family's house in
- 3:13the middle of the night to fly home.
- 3:15So creator Ella Catherine is going viral.
- 3:18Like, proper viral. 40 million views viral after she moved to
- 3:23Italy to be an au pair for a family and documented herself
- 3:26escaping in the middle of the night to fly back to the US less
- 3:31than a week later. Gosh, I'm literally shaking.
- 3:33That was the scariest thing ever.
- 3:35I couldn't figure out how to get past the gate, but I got it.
- 3:39And carrying all these bags, kind of scary.
- 3:43I just hope the train comes soon.
- 3:45So Ella is a 21 year old American girl.
- 3:47She was meant to a pair for like 3 months in Milan for a family
- 3:51in Italy with one child. She said she met them on a free
- 3:55au pair website and not through an agency, but she knows that
- 3:58lots of people use that site. The host mom reached out to her
- 4:02and they Facetimed twice and then within two weeks she was on
- 4:05a flight. Ella has since posted a few
- 4:07videos explaining how and why she decided to leave.
- 4:10There were a few factors at play, but it seemingly came down
- 4:13to a lack of training and job clarity, feeling belittled and
- 4:17aggression from the host mom, or alleged aggression from the host
- 4:20mom being asked to work outside of her agreed hours and
- 4:24regularly being alone with the host dad who didn't speak any
- 4:28English so there was like a major language barrier.
- 4:30Ella explained that part of you know why she decided to leave
- 4:34was that she was being blamed for things that weren't her
- 4:36fault. One example she shared was
- 4:39during a weekend trip to Portofino with the family.
- 4:41They were getting the child into the car and when someone honked
- 4:44at them, the host mom turned around and blamed Ella, saying
- 4:47she wasn't paying attention or helping.
- 4:50But according to Ella, she had been with the child the entire
- 4:52time. Ella basically just made it out
- 4:54to be quite this like toxic environment for her which
- 4:58prompted her to sneak out in the middle of the night.
- 5:00I think she was like, I want to say she was like 5 days in.
- 5:04So she said she didn't tell the family that she wanted to leave
- 5:07because she was uncomfortable and worried about how they would
- 5:10react. So she just snuck out and then
- 5:11sent them a text. Ella has received a lot of hate.
- 5:16Many people claim that she dramatized her original video
- 5:19where she posted about escaping. Like people were genuinely
- 5:22concerned for her safety, thinking OK, like what kind of
- 5:25bad situation is she in? And then when she did her story
- 5:28time when she was back in the US, people were like, wait,
- 5:31that's it. So there was already a lot of
- 5:33skepticism them around, you know, Ella and her kind of
- 5:37expectations of being an au pair.
- 5:40And of course, then people start like looking into her social
- 5:43media, they start looking into who the host family could have
- 5:45been and all these things have come out.
- 5:47So I guess Ella was posting on TikTok prior to going to Italy
- 5:51saying she was going to have like a Euro summer.
- 5:52And she was basically trying to figure out how she was going to
- 5:55do that. And then she started posting
- 5:57that she got this amazing opportunity to have this like
- 6:00beautiful Euro summer, started talking about her clothes and
- 6:02all this kind of stuff. So everyone's like, so you
- 6:04obviously went for, like, a vacation and, you know, when you
- 6:08are au pairing, like, you're taking care of someone's child.
- 6:10So like, childcare needs to be the number one priority.
- 6:13But OK, fine. Like, of course, like, people
- 6:15don't just au pair out of the kindness of their hearts.
- 6:18They're there to experience a different culture, a different
- 6:20country to travel on the weekends.
- 6:22Like whatever. Part of what Ella claims is
- 6:25that. Yeah, like, her duties were
- 6:27beyond what the job description said.
- 6:29So she said that, you know, she was made to bathe the child and
- 6:34and that was not part of her job description.
- 6:36She said she had every Friday off, but then they were
- 6:38expecting her to do child care on Friday, all these little
- 6:41things. And now, of course, multiple
- 6:42Internet sleuths have dug up the job listing and the host family.
- 6:46And I'm not going to like put anything here.
- 6:48I'm not going to read it. Like people have been reading it
- 6:50on TikTok, which I think is just like creepy.
- 6:53Like it's not doxing the host family.
- 6:54But like it could be, you know, like people could like actually
- 6:57figure out like who this is in real life.
- 6:59So I will not be doing any of that.
- 7:01But apparently in the job description, it does say, like,
- 7:05she will bathe the child. It says that she gets, I think
- 7:08Fridays from like 4:30 PM off because the child gets picked up
- 7:11earlier from school on Fridays. So there seems to be a lot of
- 7:15confusion and, like, questions around what her expectations
- 7:19were there and basically blaming her, saying like, you didn't
- 7:22understand what you were signing up for.
- 7:24Oh, yeah. And in one of her first days,
- 7:26she was saying like, she didn't know what she was supposed to
- 7:28do. But I, I guess if you think
- 7:31about it like if all the duties of what you're supposed to do in
- 7:34the house are like listed on the job posting and then you get
- 7:37there and like in theory, you are supposed to know like you
- 7:40take care of the kids. So I think maybe there was just
- 7:44like miscommunication across the board, like her host family
- 7:47thinking she would come in and just like take charge and start
- 7:50doing all those things. And she was not doing that.
- 7:52She was expecting direction and to be kind of like told what to
- 7:56do. And of course, in the first few
- 7:57days, like you do need to be like trained and kind of
- 7:59directed, I get it. But one of the first days she
- 8:03said like there was nothing to do.
- 8:05And so she took a nap in the middle of the day.
- 8:08And then the host mom was like, hello, what are you doing?
- 8:11Basically like texted her and she was like, oh, I'm taking a
- 8:14nap. Ella is definitely kind of
- 8:18getting dragged, but she's like leaning in.
- 8:20OK, so she has turned all the comments off of these videos.
- 8:24But she is like in her influencer era.
- 8:26Also, people saw actually that at the beginning of the summer
- 8:29before she left or like before she, I guess it's not summer yet
- 8:32in the US, but like before she left for Italy, she said this
- 8:35summer, I want to work so hard at TikTok that I make TikTok my
- 8:38fault full time job. So a lot of people are like, OK,
- 8:40did she take this job, you know, this au pair opportunity to kind
- 8:44of build her TikTok. And when she figured out she was
- 8:46or like found out she was unable to like vlog with the kid.
- 8:49Like maybe maybe she even asked the parents, like who knows.
- 8:52Then it kind of like threw a wrench in that plan for her.
- 8:55But it also is like incredibly disorienting living at other
- 8:59people's houses. I did an exchange when I was 16.
- 9:03I wasn't au pairing, but I was like, because I'm obviously from
- 9:06Canada. And so we, I was in French
- 9:08immersion my whole schooling. So I did a French exchange where
- 9:10I lived with a girl and her family who was my age.
- 9:14We were both 16. I lived with her family for two
- 9:16months and then she came to Canada and lived with my family
- 9:19for two months. And it is so disorienting living
- 9:25in a different country and someone else's house amongst
- 9:27their own things. Like it feels very different to
- 9:30moving like a way for university.
- 9:32Like I lived away for university.
- 9:34Obviously I live, I'm an expat now living in Sydney from
- 9:37Canada. And like it's so different when
- 9:39it's like on your own terms, like in your own space, whether
- 9:42it's like your own dorm or like your own apartment or whatever.
- 9:44Even if you're living in a share house and stuff, it's so
- 9:47different than living like slotting yourself into someone's
- 9:49family and their life. It's a very, like, disorienting
- 9:52experience. So I don't know if she expected
- 9:54how bizarre she was going to feel, like all of that was going
- 9:56to feel when she signed up to this.
- 9:58But yes, she is absolutely being dragged.
- 10:00But, you know, she's also 21. OK, you guys.
- 10:03And when I was 21, I was making the most unhinged decisions.
- 10:09I was living away from home at university by myself.
- 10:12And, yeah, I can't say that I wouldn't have made similar
- 10:17decisions. I mean, I probably wouldn't have
- 10:18taken a nap in the middle of, like, essentially a work shift.
- 10:21But, you know, her not like having a solid plan, like doing
- 10:25this, like spontaneously, you know, not going through like, a
- 10:28vetted agency, like all this stuff.
- 10:29I'm like, yeah, but she's like 21.
- 10:31Like, I don't know, to me, I'm like 21.
- 10:33You're just, you're just a kid. Like, you don't know, you know,
- 10:37you're like starting adulthood, like, kind of like dipping your
- 10:41toe into it a little bit and you're gonna make tons of
- 10:43mistakes. And yeah, this is the most viral
- 10:47thing, at least on my side of the Internet right now.
- 10:50OK, the next story that I have for you guys, this is OK.
- 10:53Actually, no, I have two Coachella adjacent stories.
- 10:56The 1st is that Addison Ray made her Coachella debut.
- 11:00Annabelle is like the biggest Addison Ray Stan.
- 11:05She's like, that's my girl. So she spent the whole day
- 11:08today. It's Monday for us in Australia,
- 11:09the whole day today with three screens, one of them working on
- 11:13the podcast with me, the other on Slack with us.
- 11:16And then the third, she had the Coachella live stream going up
- 11:19and she was like sending us screenshots being like, Oh my
- 11:21God, my girl Addison. So Addison made her debut.
- 11:23That's very cool. It's also really cool to think
- 11:25that Sabrina Carpenter, didn't she play espresso for the very
- 11:29first time at Coachella last year, like this time last year.
- 11:32That's wild to think of the impact since, OK.
- 11:35But the other Coachella adjacent story that I have for you guys
- 11:38is that Timothy Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are attending
- 11:42Coachella together. And there's this clip of them
- 11:45together in the crowd being affectionate.
- 11:48And I don't know, they're like amongst 1,000,000 people and it
- 11:52was just taken by a random fan. It did not look staged.
- 11:56It was not like APR moment. And they were just being like
- 11:59really cute together. So you guys know, like, I don't
- 12:02believe in them. I don't believe that they exist
- 12:06in the same universe. But this clip really is the
- 12:09first time where I've seen like actual chemistry from them.
- 12:13And it was really cute. So I've decided I will buy in.
- 12:16I'm going to stop being a Timothy Chalamet and Kylie
- 12:19Jenner denier for the time being, and I will subscribe to
- 12:23their love story. The next story that I have for
- 12:26you guys. I don't really know what else to
- 12:27say about this, but it's something that you need to get
- 12:30across and I'm sure a lot of you guys are.
- 12:32But TikTok is being flooded with Chinese manufacturers sharing
- 12:37how they make luxury goods. So in the wake of the US
- 12:40tariffs, Chinese manufacturing companies are spilling the tea
- 12:44on TikTok about the process and actual pricing of making luxury
- 12:49items and encouraging consumers to buy direct from the source
- 12:53now instead of through brands. That Irma's fatigue will cost
- 12:57you 38,000 USD, but what is the real cost out of the factory
- 13:02today? I'm going to break it down in
- 13:04front of you step by step. So it's just an endless stream
- 13:08of these manufacturers sharing the pricing and kind of like how
- 13:12you can get in touch with them and how you can buy their
- 13:15products. So it's like you're seeing a
- 13:17Birkin being made and then it gets shipped back to Italy and
- 13:20they put, you know, like the logo on it and maybe some
- 13:22finishing touches. But they're like, yeah, if you
- 13:24want to buy this Birkin bag directly from, you know, us in
- 13:29China, get in touch and you can buy it for like 450 USD or
- 13:35something like that. It was probably more than that.
- 13:36I kind of forget this whole situation has started quite a
- 13:39big conversation about, I mean, obviously the tariffs, but also
- 13:43kind of how, like China is pushing back.
- 13:46And also just like, the price of luxury goods or the price of
- 13:51branding. Because at the end of the day,
- 13:54sure, you could buy a Birkin bag directly from the manufacturer,
- 13:59but it wouldn't have the Hermes branding on it.
- 14:02So then is it a Birkin bag, you know, And like, what's the
- 14:06point? Isn't the point of buying
- 14:08something that is so expensive so that people know that you
- 14:11have something that's so expensive, you know, so that
- 14:13they know that you're part of this, like, elite club?
- 14:15Like, isn't that kind of the point?
- 14:17Yeah, I guess the power of marketing and branding, and it's
- 14:19really interesting to see the pushback.
- 14:22OK. And the last story that I have
- 14:24for you guys is that Katy Perry is going to space.
- 14:28So Katy Perry is one of six women who are heading to space
- 14:32courtesy of Blue Origin, which is a private Space Flight
- 14:35company owned by the devil himself, Jeff Bezos.
- 14:39For context, the flight is thought to cost hundreds of
- 14:42thousands of dollars, but it's not known exactly how much.
- 14:47It is also presumed that the celebrities who are heading to
- 14:50space paid for it themselves. This flight has been billed as a
- 14:53historic event because it is the first female only crew since
- 14:571963, but online, people aren't taking it as seriously.
- 15:02On Twitter, many people have been sharing memes about the
- 15:04flight, with update accounts like Pop Base and Pop Crave
- 15:07counting down until she leaves. Nevertheless, the flight will
- 15:10allegedly last around 10 minutes total.
- 15:15This is just so stupid. Rich people need to stop going
- 15:18to space. Do you remember when rich people
- 15:21used to donate like buildings? They would build libraries, they
- 15:24would build hospitals, they would build education, they
- 15:27would fund the arts. Like stop going to fucking space
- 15:30for what? Also, if I was an astronaut, I
- 15:34would be so deeply offended that all of these rich people can
- 15:39just, like, pay for a ticket on my life's work, basically.
- 15:43You know, like these people are like elite physicists and they
- 15:46are an elite physical condition, and they are like, training
- 15:49their whole lives. It is so incredibly difficult to
- 15:52become an astronaut, to, like, actually go to space and do the
- 15:54work. And now all these rich people
- 15:57just get to go. I'm interested in staying on the
- 16:00ground. If I had that much money, I
- 16:02would literally never go to space.
- 16:04Like, that would be the last thing that I would care about.
- 16:07Who cares? I guess when you have that much
- 16:09money, you're just like, what else is there?
- 16:12Like, how else will I get a thrill?
- 16:14You know what else am I chasing? So I guess Katy Perry is about
- 16:18to get 10 minutes of thrill. Anyways guys, that's it for Mini
- 16:21Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
