- 0:16And starting it's the Morning Show with Preston's Got good morning. It's Wednesday,
- 0:22January the seventeenth. Little chili outside, It'll get your blood moving, that's
- 0:26for sure. Great to be with you. That's Grant Allen over there in
- 0:29Studio one A. I am here in Studio one B and I'm hungered down
- 0:33right now with Charlie. Charlie Strickland is with me from the Talent Training Group,
- 0:39and of course he and JD are also co hosts of Talent Outdoors.
- 0:44You can follow the podcast on the iHeartRadio app. You can listen live on
- 0:47Saturday mornings. How are you, Bud, Happy New Year, Merry Christmas
- 0:51all that stuff. Oh yeah, you took off for the holidays. Yeah,
- 0:54just work right through. We just plow right on through, of course
- 0:56you do. It's our busiest time of the year. We were glad to
- 1:02have that end of the year rush. You never know how that's gonna turn
- 1:04out. I'm curious, after this number of years with the range and now
- 1:10with the store, what does what does the season tell you if anything about
- 1:15the upcoming year? Does it act as any kind of predictor Well, we
- 1:19hope you know, when we have a busy holiday season that that's sort of
- 1:23an indicator that the coming year is gonna fall a suit. It's sort of
- 1:26like, you know what you're doing at midnight on the first, you know,
- 1:30the new year, that's what you're gonna do the rest of the year.
- 1:33So I figure out every year, I figure I'm gonna be sleeping a
- 1:34lot because that's what I'm doing at midnight. That takes in my late fifties.
- 1:40Is uh, I don't know if I'm wost stay up. So we
- 1:44did make it till after midnight, but I'm a late night binge, you
- 1:49know, show watcher. Okay, well, wife had enough of this.
- 1:55I have the next day. I have to get her caught up on whatever
- 1:57episodes I she just doesn't want to stay up in one. He's not well.
- 2:01She has a real job, So I worked for me and j D.
- 2:07That's no. It was a but yeah, we hope that it's going
- 2:10to be this kind of year. I mean, you never know because with
- 2:15all the politics going on, you know, so if of course, I
- 2:20don't think Biden's gonna make it to the election and any semblance of a sane
- 2:27fashion or whatever. But for some reason, other Democrats pull out a stip
- 2:30presidential election, then the gun business is going to go crazy for a while.
- 2:36You know, we don't want to see that for that reason. It's
- 2:38it's bad as when you're cheering against your industry being busy. You know,
- 2:40we want the industry to be strong. But when it said it's peak,
- 2:45it's because the politics are against us. So we were pulling for you know,
- 2:51sanity and normalcy or you know, as close to Trump you can get
- 2:54to that. And you know, but that philosophy being in office and and
- 3:00it hurts us. It's like when we passed or when that's the state passed
- 3:02and the governor signed the uh, the permitless carry thing. That hurts us,
- 3:08but it helps us, if you know what I mean. It hurts
- 3:10our business because people don't feel like they have to have the training that they
- 3:15did before, which we really haven't seen that play out that way. It's
- 3:20been a lot of people still come to us they don't have to. I
- 3:23still think a lot of the fly by night training classes sort of fell away,
- 3:28the ones that were required for the permit, but responsible people are still
- 3:31coming for that. So you know, we're looking for a good year in
- 3:36front of us. We dodged. You heard about all the tornadoes and stuff
- 3:42in Marianna was a story. There was weather everywhere for you and your family
- 3:46and friends out there. Yeah, the tornado that hurt hit Irwin Jackson's campground
- 3:51over there actually formed over our house. My wife works for the Sheriff's office.
- 3:57She runs communications over there for she was in the USC and she called
- 4:00me at six in the morning. That's that's a six year times like five
- 4:05my time to wake up, and it was six. Anyway, she says,
- 4:10there's a tornado over the house. So I throw on a robe and
- 4:13walk out in the blistering cold wind and look up. I had to go
- 4:17take the flag down because the flagpole was at about a forty five degree angle
- 4:21and in the midst of a tornado. I'm taking care of the flag.
- 4:25Glad to see you have your priorities right now, making sure it's not touching
- 4:28the ground, and uh so I got to make But I look up and
- 4:31you can see the clouds doing all kinds of crazy stuff, and then it's
- 4:35moving to the northeast pretty rapidly, and I'm like, Okay, I think
- 4:39we dodged this one. To see on the radiar I've got pictures on my
- 4:42phone where there's a circle around my house and and it hit from my hilltop.
- 4:46I could I would have if it had not been cloud. I've been
- 4:48able to see where it hit the ground that touched down the first time over
- 4:53at a friend's house and then went straight north and jumped the Inner State,
- 4:57loos some trucks off the Innerstate and hit Irwin's campground that he has spent so
- 5:00much time and money rebuilding after Michael, and now it's just utterly destroyed.
- 5:05And you know, terrible things happen to good people. I just you know,
- 5:11but it was a roughness, close call. A lot of friends lost
- 5:14a lot of houses and stuff over there. Charlie Strickland with me of the
- 5:20Talent Training Group and Helen Outdoor is our personal defense segment. You know,
- 5:25you talked about Charlie the presidential election. Obviously it's it's going to impact the
- 5:31industry one way or the other. Where are we with ammunition in twenty twenty
- 5:38four heading into it. I've heard some reports say that the government is buying
- 5:42up a bunch of stuff, and so there's some AMO that's a little more
- 5:45difficult to find than others. This thing is all over the map. We
- 5:48started hearing with the war in Ukraine that we were going to have these severe
- 5:53ammunition shortages and that countries weren't going to be importing ammo anymore from you know,
- 5:58Europe, and then the Biden administration is pushing buttons trying to keep stuff
- 6:00from coming, and then you know, everybody, we start worrying about it,
- 6:05and then the supplies don't dry up, and then you start hearing from
- 6:10your manufacturers, hey, it's going to be a tight time, and then
- 6:13it's not. But then you can't get stuff, you know, in a
- 6:15timely fashion, and then all of a sudden it's there again. And so
- 6:20I can't really speak with any authority on where we're going with that, because
- 6:25it's it's the We feel like the industry in some fashion said produce some artificial
- 6:31rumors or shortages. You know, they were making a lot of money.
- 6:35Am was short and they were running prices through the roof, and then all
- 6:39of a sudden, it's what the left accuses old companies are doing. It's
- 6:44kind of the same thing. Now we don't know that this was the case,
- 6:46but it sort of felt like there was this false panic that they were
- 6:50trying to push in to us to go ahead and buy a bunch of stuff
- 6:53and get it in. It's not as free flowing as it was before,
- 6:58because yes, there is some pressure from foreign wars and a lot of the
- 7:01components and the raw materials. And what you have to remember is is in
- 7:06most every industry, and the AMMO and oil production and even vehicle manufacturing,
- 7:14electronics manufacturing, but every industry is dependent upon the global economy and the supply
- 7:21chain, and all it takes is for something to happen. I mean,
- 7:26the big AMMO shortages in COVID was because the Italy shut down. I remember
- 7:30Italy just said, we're shuddering our society for a while, and that's where
- 7:33a lot of our primers came from. And all it takes is a twenty
- 7:36percent reduction in primer supply, and all of a sudden, AMMO is hard
- 7:41to get because you just took something that was you know, take any kind
- 7:45of food stores. You've got so many gallons of milk coming into the grocery
- 7:48stores and so many gallons of milk being bought, and the farmers produced so
- 7:53many gallons of milk, and I have to buy so many cows to be
- 7:56able to provide what the demand is and anytime. So all of a sudden
- 7:59you lost a quarter of your cow herd, or a quarter of the milk
- 8:03bottling facilities went down. There's a pinch, all of a sudden. This
- 8:07the grocery store shelves are empty because one it's you're not getting it, but
- 8:11people aren't just waiting now the panic buying. Of course, milk's a bad
- 8:13example because it won't sit there forever. But you know the same thing with
- 8:18ammunition. So it's every industry is the same, and we are so dependent
- 8:20on China and other foreign countries for our raw materials, for all of the
- 8:26components and technology and production. Back when I was studying college or studying I
- 8:33was studying in college in my forties. When I went back to get my
- 8:37business degree, you know, we'd sit around and listen to professor talk about
- 8:43how important the globalization is so important and it's so critical to a worldwide economy
- 8:48in these times of peace when we're all learning to get long and it forces
- 8:52us to coexist amongst the Yeah, how's that working out for us? You
- 8:56know, there was this big push. Everybody was all that's out source everything.
- 9:00We're a service related economy. Let's push everything to these countries where they
- 9:03employ inexpensive labor, I a slave labor, and let's have let them build
- 9:09the stuff. And this is what is being pushed in like apple, you
- 9:13name it. So look, so where are we now? So if we
- 9:16have a war with China, we have something. So when I start preparing
- 9:20for you know, power outages, like when we had a you know,
- 9:24two day power outage the other day because of the tornadoes, you know,
- 9:26I relish those moments sometimes because it gets it. Lets me test my my
- 9:31plan and identify the issues that we have in the plan. Where are the
- 9:35where are the problems? And then we fix those because uh yeah, I
- 9:41don't know what's going to happen next, but you know I've got plenty of
- 9:43am If you don't, I know where some's at litting on the shelf over
- 9:48midway. We are back twenty one minutes after the hour. Charlie Strickland with
- 9:52me from the Talent Training Group Personal defense segments. So the holiday season's busy.
- 9:58We talked about it with JD at the beginning of the month of December.
- 10:01Folks do go out and buy guns some make a mistake and picking one
- 10:05out for somebody as opposed to letting them try one. But the bottom line
- 10:09is there are new people with guns out there. It occurred to me in
- 10:11all the years that you and I and JD and I have talked about this
- 10:16in this segment, we haven't spent much time on maintaining firearms. And I'm
- 10:22just curious, how often should someone break down a semi automatic pistol and clean
- 10:30it every single time they shoot? Because I know that's not happening. Oh
- 10:33well, I don't do it every time, single time I shoot. I'm
- 10:37guilty of that, right. You know, the SHARE's office we want it.
- 10:39Every time you qualified annually, we wanted you to go home and clean
- 10:43your gun. Most people didn't, you know, let show up the next
- 10:46year with a dirty gun. A gun works fine, depending on if you've
- 10:50got a good quality gun. It's not necessary to clean it that often.
- 10:54It's a good idea, Okay. It's kind of like you could probably wear
- 10:58the same pair of pants two or three days in a row if you wanted
- 11:01to, especially in the winter. You're supposed to, you know, not
- 11:05me, I wear clothes one time goes into dirty clothes and it's the magic
- 11:11hamper in the closet, you know. I just put it in there,
- 11:13and it magically appears folded in the other in the house. It does.
- 11:16I can't figure how to magically make it go back in the closet and hang
- 11:20back up where it belongs. But how do you do that with your firearm?
- 11:22And so well you will. You come to me and act stupid,
- 11:28and you go, I just don't know how to do it, and I'll
- 11:31go, well, hang on just a minute, Well let me wipe it
- 11:33down while I've got it broken apart. And no, don't come in the
- 11:35store and say, Charlie wants me to come show I'm too stupid to run
- 11:39my gun. I want Charlee, I want to see charting. No,
- 11:41don't please. The chances of catching me with a spare minute are pretty slim.
- 11:46So really, you should clean your firearm every time you shoot it,
- 11:48because what happens is the residue you leave on there starts to attract moisture,
- 11:52and moisture does bad things to metals. And also that residue also attracts grime,
- 12:00pocket lens, things that are on you. If I if I took
- 12:03my gun out and my holster at any given moment and dropping the magazine ejected
- 12:09around lock slide to the rear. You're going to find a lint and dirt
- 12:11in there, just from every day carry, because I carry the gun everywhere
- 12:13I go and there's a lot of stuff in there, and it does,
- 12:16in fact need to whether I shoot it or not, it needs to be
- 12:20broken down into the few components that you know. You don't have to break
- 12:24it down to every pen and spring, just field strip it. Every gun
- 12:28comes with a manual, and if it doesn't come with a manual, google
- 12:31it. There's a YouTube clip somewhere. Yeah, there's a YouTube and probably
- 12:35one that I did fifteen years ago on how to just break it basically take
- 12:39that thing down, and you should ask when you buy a gun, you
- 12:43should ask person at the counter how do I do this? Or bring in
- 12:45your gun unloaded in a box into the store and we'll show you how to
- 12:48do it. I mean any store. You can go to any store in
- 12:50town, they'll probably more than likely be more than happy to show you how
- 12:54to do that. As a customer service issue. Gun cleaning, there's gun
- 12:58cleaning stuff on every gun store in town. I was going to ask you.
- 13:01Let me ask you that as well. There are products that are designed
- 13:05for guns that that every gun store sells, right is that the type of
- 13:11product? I mean, what distinguishes that from say something else that you would
- 13:16use to clean, something like WD forty or something exactly. Don't need that
- 13:18stuff? Okay? Why? Oh? WD forty a great product for cleaning
- 13:24and for displaced water displacement dash forward es. It's it's great for I have
- 13:30multiple cans of w D forty and shed, I have p B blaster,
- 13:33I have all kinds of stuff you know that stays in my shed, in
- 13:37my barn, in the back of my truck. I don't use them on
- 13:39guns. I use gun oil on guns because gun oil has been specifically formulated
- 13:43for that purpose. Now, there are some machine oils and some motor owls
- 13:48and some things and blends and stuff that we get into mixing our own and
- 13:52doing whatever. Don't do. Just just go buy me by a little bitty
- 13:56bodygun oil that lasts most people for ever and ever. Yeah, because you
- 14:01only need like with a glock, you literally need five drops of oil to
- 14:03lubricate a glock pistol correctly, you know. And there's a specific places that
- 14:09those things go a little bit of all goes a long long way. Too
- 14:11much oil on a gun, it starts to just absorb trash. So yeah,
- 14:16because you hear people talk about you need to make sure that gun's good
- 14:20and wet, No you don't, you don't. You need just where the
- 14:26metal surfaces touch metal surfaces, that's really the only place oil goes. And
- 14:28then it's such a thin layer. How do you know when this day and
- 14:33age that you got a metal surface touching a metal surface when so many guns
- 14:35are composite, Well, even the composite guns, polymer guns things like that
- 14:41have steel inserts. A glock has a polymer frame, but inside of that
- 14:46it is molded a steel skeletal structure and there's four little steel contact points there
- 14:52that fit inside the slide rails on the slide. And you just put a
- 14:58dry all on each slide rail on the slide and let it, you know,
- 15:03run down the rails. That's all you have to do there literally five
- 15:07drops. It's crazy simple. But you don't want any visible though. You
- 15:13just want to kind of wipe it off of an oily rag when you're done,
- 15:16dry rag on the grip, so you don't want to leabricate the grip.
- 15:20It's The Morning Show with Preston Scott on News Radio one hundred point seven
- 15:24double UFLA or on NewsRadio double UFLA Panamicity dot com. Time flies when you're
- 15:33having fun and Charlie and I haven't seen each other in a while, so
- 15:35we're actually catching up on a lot of stuff and it's good to see you.
- 15:41Good to see you. Yeah, the people who just listen to everything
- 15:43we just talked about on the break, that would be like a whole episode.
- 15:46Well, how often you and Charlie are you and JD talk about that?
- 15:50If only people heard and the things you talk about that don't make the
- 15:54show. I've been carving out a little bit of the breaks here recently on
- 15:58our show. Yeah, Grant produces the show, and then after he's gone,
- 16:03I take the video and play with it and putting some stuff on YouTube,
- 16:07and we just record right through the breaks now and nobody gets to hear
- 16:14that. But the most recent show, I carved out part of the break
- 16:17and I put it out there as a short. I can't tell if he's
- 16:19blushing over there, just laughing from familiarity, but he well, he hears
- 16:25everything that goes on on the break. He's sitting right there in the room
- 16:29with us. He's over there doing stuff with the computer and frees us up
- 16:32to just sort of just sort of well, just keep going and yeah,
- 16:41me and j D and Fred and Captain Paul in the room. Sometimes it
- 16:45gets a little you know. Captain Paul is I mean he is straight he's
- 16:48Oh yeah, I tell you what. He is, straight laced, he's
- 16:52he is. He is a true Christian gentleman, Yes, sir, he
- 16:55is. And to put him next to Fred is like, you know,
- 17:00let's let's watch what happened, you know. But here's the thing. Oh
- 17:03yeah, But I mean they sit there and talk about fishing and all these
- 17:07different things. And I just sometimes just sit there and play on my phone
- 17:10on the brakes and listen to them talk. And it's such a you know,
- 17:12it's such a unique conversation sometimes I bet it is. But hey,
- 17:17let me ask you this. We talked about breaking down firearms, how often
- 17:22you clean and so forth. I wrote down another question that I've gotten via
- 17:26email. And I know that you all on the program have talked quite a
- 17:30bit about the new law in Florida, as it's as it's made right now,
- 17:33the law as it is with regard to constitutional carry, we're not quite
- 17:37full constitutional carry. What do you recommend? What is the best way for
- 17:42someone to carry inside their vehicle? Okay, so I carry on my person
- 17:52inside my vehicle, that's on me. It's in my waistband, okay,
- 17:57or in my part which I wouldn't have a hard time getting one out of
- 18:00my pocket in my vehicle. But I do carry a pocket pistol sometimes,
- 18:03but that's not my primary gun. That's typically the second or third tertiary or
- 18:07whatever it's. But sometimes I'll have one just in case I got to go
- 18:11somewhere. You know, by inside of the waist band's not good. So
- 18:14in a vehicle, I always tell people the safest place to put one is
- 18:18inside your console or just lift console lid there's a gun there, or you
- 18:22know, a glove box is way over there. It's hard to get to,
- 18:25yep, it is. You don't want to use these magnet mounts and
- 18:27things to where it just sticks to the dash because technically those aren't really legal
- 18:33because they're not securely in cased, not otherwise really accessible. They're also not
- 18:37on your person because you can carry on your person now with a new law,
- 18:40but it has to be on your person in the vehicle. It still
- 18:42fits the old statue, which says that it has to be securely in case
- 18:45not otherwise really accessible. So it's either on you or it's securely incased.
- 18:49So that part of the law is not any different now now, despite the
- 18:56fact that they've opened it to where anybody can carry it. If you read
- 18:59the law, it allows you to carry on your person concealed, concealed without
- 19:03a permit. Correct. Okay, that means in your vehicle, that means
- 19:06out in public, okay, But your vehicle carry still remains the same.
- 19:10That lass still stays the same. They didn't change that. They didn't say,
- 19:14you know, in your vehicle. Now you can carry anywhere you want
- 19:17to. So it's still and it's subject to interpretation. But the safest bet
- 19:22is to either keep it on you or securely encased. Now, you know,
- 19:26as far as the most convenient place, it's on kind. I mean,
- 19:30I've got a rack with a rifle and a pistol that's behind the seed.
- 19:33I've got, you know, a bunch of different options. But I
- 19:37would say somewhere people can't see it. That if it's not on your person,
- 19:41it's inside of something snapped in something in a holster where you can get
- 19:45to it quickly, and that's so wide open in different vehicle tips. I
- 19:49want to talk some more about this, and I want to talk about the
- 19:52specific application in case of need next with Charlie Strickland the Talent Training Group Personal
- 19:59Defense. Here on the Wrning Show with Preston Scott went to break. Charlie
- 20:06said, what do you mean by that? Yeah? I never know,
- 20:10And you said, when we come back, we're going to talk about X,
- 20:11Y and Z, and I'm going, I don't know what he's talking
- 20:15while we're on the break, Can you tell me what I might have to
- 20:18google that real quick. We're talking about carrying inside a vehicle and the best
- 20:25way to do it, because I firmly believe that probably you know, and
- 20:29I'm obviously I can't document this, but I would say the overwhelming majority have
- 20:33no real idea how to carry in their firearm in their vehicle and it be
- 20:38available in a case of need. I will tell you most people that buy
- 20:42guns don't carry on their person. They leave them in their vehicle. I
- 20:47mean, good, strong, conservative gun on in public. You know,
- 20:51red blooded USA American Americans don't carry on them like they should, even though
- 20:56they can. They leave it in their truck or they're car or something,
- 21:00and then you know, where's that at. Well, let's send a holster
- 21:03inside my console. I go look in at their console and it's under six
- 21:07months worth of paperworking crap. They're thrown in there. You know, they
- 21:10got to dig for it, and that speaks to mindset. But if you're
- 21:14going to carry in a vehicle, so it needs to be Now a lot
- 21:18of people think and most of us, including you and I, have holsters
- 21:21that are KAYAKX holster and you put the gun in and it goes click and
- 21:25it's friction fit. That's not really snapped there, and it's not really secured
- 21:29it has to So it doesn't fit the letter of the law with regard to
- 21:33being out says snapped in a holster. I would argue that that's clicked in
- 21:36a holster, you know, which is close enough to being snapped in a
- 21:38holster, and it has just as much retention as the other does. But
- 21:44it's it's a nuance you'd have to argue in court, and you don't want
- 21:47to go there. So getting something with a thumb snap, a rotating hood,
- 21:52a some sort of retention device which is a little more old school.
- 21:56You know, it can be zipped in something, it can be in something
- 21:59with the lid. It could be just covered up. It doesn't even have
- 22:02to be snapped or league as long as it's as long as it's enclosed.
- 22:07Mike. See this leads me to my next question, because let's just say
- 22:11you take one of those friction or snap holsters. You just take that thing
- 22:14off, you put it in your console. That doesn't make sense to me
- 22:17because it's still a two handed thing to get access to it to draw it
- 22:21if you needed it. Yes, and that's one of the issues if I
- 22:23take my inside the wasteband holster off and just throw it in my console or
- 22:29set it in the console or whatever driving down the road. I mean,
- 22:33let's be honest, most people that do take them off just gonna throw them
- 22:36in the cup holder or something, which is not technically legal. But you
- 22:41know, it is what it is. But it's still going to take two
- 22:45hands to free it unless you know how to push your thumb on that holster
- 22:48just the right way and get that thing out of there. Or use some
- 22:51sort of jam it up against something and pull it out. It's it's you
- 22:56know, it is a two handed move. The same thing if you're carrying.
- 23:00If you're concerned about, you know, a hitchhiker, somebody getting in
- 23:03the passenger seat of your vehicle, and you're right handed, you've got stuff
- 23:06in the middle of the car. You got to consider, well, how
- 23:07would I get to the gun if this person gets in the passenger side and
- 23:11the carjacking or something, how would I get to the gun? It's between
- 23:14us. We're fixing a fight over it at that point. If you carry
- 23:18it on the left side, you know, I would reach down in the
- 23:21door pocket, unholstered the pistol and turn and I would I would practice using
- 23:25my left hand to shoot towards the passenger side in a close quarter environment if
- 23:30that was the case. Which, however, to training and training with your
- 23:33weekend, if you're out left handed, and then which at that distance you
- 23:36should be able to do pretty well after practicing a little bit. But then
- 23:40again, if you're going to carry down there in the door pocket, you'd
- 23:41better have that thing properly secured, because if you get stopped on a traffic
- 23:45stop and they say, hey, step out of vehicle. That's the first
- 23:48thing you see is that gun, and so you know it opens up a
- 23:53lot of doors. So really and truly you you need to and I have
- 23:56my own solutions, but it's you know, what's gun do I grab?
- 24:04The guy goes give me your truck? I'm thinking he goes. You having
- 24:10to think about it, and I'm trying to figure out im gonna kill you?
- 24:11Now, I've got so many options there, sir. You know I'm
- 24:15just saying, but I mean, these are things that everybody that is a
- 24:18gun owner needs to be. He is to walk out, sit in your
- 24:22vehicle and go, Okay, what would I do if and where's the best
- 24:23play? Exack like this and then come see us. And if you need
- 24:26a special option, a special holster made for a particular purpose, We've got
- 24:32a guy in the back that can build anything. You just have to tell
- 24:34us what you want and I might take him a week or two, but
- 24:37he'll turn out exactly what you want. Good stuff is always appreciate the time,
