- Jaba: Hello everybody and welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards, joined by my co-host Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB underscore cards underscore. And we're back. We did one of these episodes a couple weeks ago, but we want to kind of try to do it more. And again, it's kind of just has it comes up and once we hit a critical mass. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: and that is talking about some eBay snipes or just general buys that we had that we were happy about, kind of across any price range, any player, and you know, just kind of talking through our thought process, where we got it, why we bought it, and you know, why why we think it's a good deal. before we get into it, this episode is brought to you by Prospect Pulse. on the App Store now is Prospect Pulse or on desktop or mobile has Prospectpulse V one dot com. Use code Scout for your first month free. cancel any time in that first month. You're not gonna get charged. yeah, I'd highly recommend trying it out. It's free, you risk nothing, and I'm happy to, you know, walk anyone through it, kinda show you how the site works. you know, if you're serious about Bowman, I you know, just can't recommend it enough, honestly. So With that being said, Jeremy, tell me about some snipes you had. I know you were a busy boy. Jheremy: Yeah. Not really, right? I don't know. I I do think Jaba: I thought you were. Jheremy: I do think there are still snipes to be had. They're farther and fewer between. Because Jaba: Yep. Jheremy: now comps are kind of solidifying, but you're gonna catch some things that kind of sneak through or things that people just don't I don't know, like they're not gonna just full on be locked in. So what did I find? I found an Austin Overn two ninety nine Speckle Auto that The guy said has print lines on it. Wanted to make sure I knew it had print lines. I bought it for $15. And the print line is just a part of like the manufacturer line of those speckles at a $2.99. So Heath says it's a print line. I think it's just a part of the way in which the card is laid out. So for $15 of Austin Over, and we talked about him kind of being that older Rays guy who performs, has tools. Like, what's he gonna do for $15 when base autos are doing what? Like $8 to $10. Like, I'll take a number there. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Pretty much all day. let's see what else. I know I fastly quickly, fastly, bigly bought a bent a Jaba: Mm-hmm. Jheremy: Dax Kilby base auto first. So it was listed as a 26 Dax Kilby auto. The picture is of a first for 45 bucks. We had talked about him in our AFL preview. You thinking he could be a triple digit auto again one day? Off to a scorching start. You picked him as your $50 plus. I remembered that. I saw that price go up and we talked about this too. Like just knowing kind of baselines when you see something quick, snap it. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: I knew you already had him as your fifty plus. You we had talked about him cracking into potential triple digits or at least high 80s, 90s. When I saw it buy it now for $45, for me, that was a no-brainer, so I snagged that. Jaba: Yeah, not to cut you off, but when Jheremy: No, you're good. Jaba: we did our draft, I think he was a seventy one dollar auto, he might have been seventy four. either way, per prospect pulse he's now at ninety one. So, I mean you got yours half off. The last four Jheremy: Love that. Yeah. By the time that yep. Jaba: sales are eighty, ninety four, ninety ninety. you know. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: I don't think it was you know, Warren Buffett type call to say that he was gonna be a hundred bucks. But Jheremy: Right, but Jaba: I also kinda thought it would take more than four AFL games, but he's been he's been nuclear, Homered. But Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah, and I mean bought it for fifty f or forty five. I'm all into it for fifty three, fifty three. I think that's also a part of what we all do that nobody wants to acknowledge but is very much a thing. Taxes, fees, shipping. It all counts as your price of your card. You can't say you bought a card for forty five, ignore Jaba: Yep. Jheremy: the fact that you paid seven dollars shipping, sell it for what I say, forty five, sell it for fifty five and say you make a profit, 'cause you don't. You didn't make money. If anything, you lost money after fees and taxes on both ends. It's something I don't think everybody wants to Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: acknowledge and nobody wants to. I like to think, look at no, it's forty five. Like, no, unless you're buying it at a card show, you're getting hit with something else. that that's that's a tangent there. Jaba: It does suck, but it's like yeah, like you're just kinda lying to yourself and then you're not gonna have Jheremy: You just have to be mindful of it 'cause Jaba: accurate numbers and you're gonna pay more taxes. Jheremy: Right. Yep. my other snap buy that I liked a lot was a Johansy Colome, true yellow first auto. guy put it up for I think it was a starting bit of forty nine ninety nine, or you could just buy it for one hundred forty nine ninety nine. Didn't think twice, just hit buy it now. He had his first name absolutely butchered and he has cologne as a last name. So I got lucky with the way I search on eBay, it's just twenty twenty six Bowman Chrome Auto. that popped up. I saw it right away. Just said yeah, let me take that. last couple were really, really cheap autos, and you and I talked about this. Like it's probably time if you can find some cheap autos, like base autos of guys you like, like go for Somebody last night had a Talon Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Haley base auto. Buy it now three dollars PWE ship. I'm all in for four fifty-five. Like for me, that's a no-brainer. You guys have heard us talk about him. And I'm trying to keep these quick and to the point so I don't just ramble nonstop. And this morning I grabbed a Kyle Carr base auto. Two dollars PWE ship all in for three fifty. I just I I simply don't think I can lose on a card when you're into it that cheap of a Yankees pitcher with the proximity to the Bronx where he is, being in that he's already up to triple A. New product like you Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Like it's not gonna be a big win. Like you run that at three bucks, like with a decent stream. Even if you get six, seven, eight bucks, like sure you make two, three bucks, but keeps the room moving and you never wanna lose money. I just feel like that's a no-brainer type buy anytime you can get a base auto of a new product ship for sub four dollars. And Jaba: Yeah, and a a again, like you your whatnot streams, you start at three bucks. Like there's just no way, like if you run that even even if in a year he hasn't debuted, like someone's gonna pay three dollars, you lose like fifty cents. You know, Jheremy: No doubt. Yeah. Jaba: the downside is just literally under a dollar. and you know. That's why I'm Jheremy: Yeah. And yeah, I mean Jaba: a huge fan of those kinds of buys. Jheremy: And the last one, and then I'll turn it over to you, was another one where just knowing doing our week to week just price checks of all these guys. Like I knew Elian Rosario was about a ten to twelve base auto, which we think is still far too cheap for his talent level. So when I saw four ninety nine go up for thirteen dollars and ninety five cents OBO with a dollar thirty ship six shipping, that's a card you don't even worry about an offer. You just buy all in your sub fifteen bucks for what we think is a top what? ten to fifteen chasing the product, like in that ten to fifteen range, not saying top ten. Jaba: Yeah, he's right there. Jheremy: Like I just thought again, that's a no brainer buy. You put that on a back wall of a show, it's gonna go. If that's what you want to do, Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: you hold it for a card show, sell it in person. Your comps are probably twenty five bucks. Like just go for it. You can't lose and I yeah I I was more low end. the Column at one fifty was I guess a little bit higher up, but that's kind of what I've been buying. Haven't been buying a whole lot. But that's seven minutes of me rambling, so you're up, Jabba Jaba: Yeah, I mean for me I think when I'm like looking to flip Or buy stuff that I can, you know, put on a whatnot stream and be confident that most of it will be winners, because, you know, you're gonna have some inexplicable losers and some are gonna go for way more than you would think. But as long as I'm buying stuff where I'm like, okay, like I I I cannot lose, you know, fifty percent on this, even in the worst room of all time, I'm gonna buy it. And I think that the best cards for that are refractors to four ninety nine, 'cause they're in everyone's price range. You know, it's not a ridiculous amount of money where people are really putting a lot of thought into it. You know, they're liquid, they look cool, there's some exclusivity with the number. So a couple of those I bought. Last couple days I got a Slater at twenty eight fifty. I mean his base is doing like fourteen bucks, so it's not even that crazy of a deal. I mean it's two X the base, but like I just feel like he's woefully undervalued. I'm not gonna sell that right now. But I think, you know, next year that's like a fifty dollar auto pretty easily. Brandon Clark got one at twenty one eighty six all in. That's another one where it's a refractor. You know, the base auto is twelve, fifteen bucks and you know, it would Take a lot for the refractor to dip below 20. so I mean it's kind of just stockpiling those refractors because they're so liquid where it just doesn't take much to win and it's pretty hard to lose at those price points. on the Ellian Rosario trend, I got a orange, I sniped one at 261, a true orange auto of Ellian Rosario. I was very happy with that. again, I mean his blues are doing like one fifty ish. They were up closer to like one eighty, but I think they've sank back down to one fifty ish. Either way, you know, I think that that's probably about where the golds should be priced. So I just felt like that was an opportunity there. And again, you know, two sixty for a true orange auto of a guy that is, you know, top fifteen ish in the product. just I i it would take a really bad year next year to lose on that. And you know, if it was that bad it's pretty easy to get out pull before you know the collapse and price. let's see here. I got a Union Amparo true orange for 130. that's just Jheremy: Gomet. Jaba: kind of you know the Mets the Mets color match and it's such a hot market. Amparo didn't really play this past year. He was good in the DSL two years ago. he'll go to single A this year and if he does much of anything, you know, with how hot the Mets market is and that color match really played into it because you know how Having collected Mets for the last few years, people really pay up for the oranges with the Mets. So, you know, again, that's just one where the downside is really limited and the upside's pretty decent, even if I'm not, you know, the biggest fan of the player. same same thing, Kleiner Ramirez got a refractor at 14 bucks all in. you know, he was a pretty he got a pretty decent bonus. He was the Mets DSL player of the year. He struck out more than you'd like, But you know, there's tools there, he played pretty well. but yeah, I mean for me I think when I'm looking at like quick snipes and trying to kind of make money and build a foundation of cards for a portfolio, I'm really looking at the four ninety nines because it's the first point where you get some sort of, you know, exclusivity with it being numbered. But it's also, you know, unless you're talking about like Angel Gomez, you know, it's kind of in everyone's wheelhouse. It moves easily. And again, if you can get these guys at price points where, you know, you feel like they can really only go up and even if they play badly next year you can come out whole. You know, that's kind of the whole thing of it to me. I'm just trying to see. There's anything else that I love here. Not really, honestly, so that kinda that's kinda that. You got anything else you want to talk about? Jheremy: Did you just get that cleiner like two or three days ago? Jaba: October seventh, so yeah, three days ago. Jheremy: I offered that guy. It was like twelve bucks OBO. So I think I sent him like a six dollar offer. And he offered he came back at me at eleven ninety nine. Like he took a penny off, which I get. Like sometimes you gotta throw out low offers and see if it Jaba: Pretty fun. Jheremy: sticks. So Jaba: actually I had one more I gotta Isaias Castillo True Blue Yankees for fifty five all in. you know normally I don't really like the DSL repeaters, but I think both Castillo And Juan Torres did have awesome years statistically. I mean, Castillo, he's a 5'11, 190 outfielder, which isn't like the greatest body, but he had 14 homers and 28 steals with a 1,037 OPS in the DSL last year. I mean, yeah, he was a repeater. He also struck out like a third of the time, but I mean that power speed combo is pretty nuts. He's a Yankee. It's a color match with the Yankees. You know, just another one where it's like, okay, how how fast could I lose on that not too fast. so you know, again, I I I think that's kind of my common theme. Jheremy: Right. Exactly. People just like your just like just like your Mets orange, like Yankees blue, like Red Sox red, right? Everybody wants those Red Sox color matches, baby out of five. the team colors just always do well. They seem to hold well too. Like even the no names will continue to hold a little bit more of a premium. I think when you and I talked, and I I already said this once, but it's like now is the time to start dipping into those base autos. Like I think you're safe. A lot of these players have bottomed out. Have a general feel for what the market is. Like just even if it's listening with us, like, hey, all right, they were saying this is about a eight to ten dollar auto. I can get one all in at five bucks. Like you're not gonna lose sleep over five Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: bucks. If you are, don't do cards, but or Jaba: Yeah, agreed. Jheremy: do it smartly. Bigly. But yeah, Jaba: Bigly. Jheremy: I mean, that's kind of it. I think it We like to do this not to show like, haha, look what we got and gloat about it. Just like the deals are still out there. And whether it's here or card Jaba: Absolutely. Jheremy: show on Facebook, on whatever app you buy, whatnot, there's deals to be had everywhere. Stay consistent looking for Know who you want. try to be concise with your searches so you're not just scrambling everywhere trying to I need a piece here, I need a piece here. I forgot about this kid, let's go scramble here. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Like just kind of have a game plan and we're gonna talk about some of that in an upcoming episode about Players we're gonna target in the off season from prior releases, players that we think are gonna be undervalued, how we're gonna attack the off season as a whole, what we're gonna do, everything like that. And I think some people have asked for that, so I think it'll be a good episode coming in the future. Jaba: Yeah, absolutely. I think that's something we're excited to talk about. And yeah, I think it'll be good. I think it's a goodbye window right now. I think November will be a goodbye window. and then yeah, I mean December we have draft and we're kinda right back into full swing once that happens. So Alright, well, Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah? Jaba: thank you everyone for listening. means the world to us. We love ya. And let's go Mets. Talk to you guys next time.
