Transcript
- 0:04Hey guys, good morning. It is Saturday,
- 0:07August 8th. This is Corey, willing to make
- 0:11things right. The Stone: Healing begins when I become willing
- 0:15to face the harm I've caused and take responsibility for it.
- 0:20Ripple 1 Practical: Today I will be honest about my past without
- 0:23becoming trapped by it. I cannot change what I have done,
- 0:28but I can become willing to make things right where possible.
- 0:33Peace grows when I stop avoiding what needs to be faced.
- 0:37Ripple 2 Spiritual: As I clean up the past, the Father replaces
- 0:41shame with humility in me. Christ forms a
- 0:45heart in me to pursue reconciliation, even when it is difficult.
- 0:50And the Holy Spirit gives courage to face old wounds and the
- 0:54willingness to take the next step toward healing.
- 0:57And, um, you know, we're talking about 8 and
- 1:029, and we'll be talking about 8 and 9 for— or just 8 right now.
- 1:05But because there is a separation in it,
- 1:09and, um, I didn't realize the separation until I
- 1:14saw— like, until I experienced it, right? Because when
- 1:19you think, like, you know, I'm going to make a list of amends and,
- 1:21you know, do this, it and became willing to
- 1:26make these amends, all of them. And that's
- 1:31different than me playing it, because I
- 1:35think a lot of this stuff we just play around in our head, or at
- 1:39least I do. I say we, I play around with a
- 1:42lot of things in my head and have for my whole life. And I
- 1:46can play it out and play it out and play it out. But when I
- 1:49put it before me in black and white, like it suggests
- 1:53we do. And it says that on page 67, it said in the Big Book,
- 1:57it says, we saw— when we
- 2:01saw our faults, we listed them. We placed them before us in black and white.
- 2:04We admitted our wrongs honestly and were willing to set
- 2:08these matters straight. And what's cool about that part, it's in Step 4.
- 2:12It's not even in Step 8. And I
- 2:18know that, uh, Man, when I was
- 2:22going through this the first or the second time, when I came back
- 2:26in the rooms and I was going back through this making the
- 2:29list process, man,
- 2:34things were really touching me. And I don't know if that makes sense, but things
- 2:37like when I would put them on paper, man, they would really affect
- 2:41me. Not affect me, but touch me in a way that it just pushed
- 2:46me against it. There was something that I couldn't it was blocking
- 2:49me. But I found the more and
- 2:53more I wrote, the— that was when the more and more my shoulders began
- 2:57to drop. Um,
- 3:00and like, I, I, I did some certain things, like, you know, I would say
- 3:05the Third Step prayer, because the Third Step prayer is interesting, right? Because like,
- 3:08it doesn't have an amen at the end of it. So I
- 3:12would say the Third Step prayer, and I would go into meditation and ask God
- 3:16to provide— to show me some names, some more names than that was on my
- 3:21list of my 4th step. And so show me some names
- 3:24of people I had affected. And then,
- 3:28I mean, you know, God would provide names for me.
- 3:31And then I would shut it down with the 7-step
- 3:35prayer. I would write those names down. I would go through the process
- 3:39of what I did to these people. How, you know,
- 3:43did I owe them money? Did I do this? Did I do, like, you know,
- 3:46how I affected their ambitions, personal relationships, security?
- 3:51I would do that, and man, my shoulders
- 3:55would drop. And then after that, I would thank God. I would thank
- 3:59Him for the— because this isn't so
- 4:04I can get all these relationships back out in the world.
- 4:08This is for me to grow my relationship with God so maybe
- 4:12I can grow relationships through God in the world.
- 4:16I don't know if that makes sense, but it makes sense to me.
- 4:21So when I come into this, if the whole deal is
- 4:25on page 44 of the big book,
- 4:28it says, if when you honestly
- 4:33want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking
- 4:36you have little control over the amount you take, you're probably alcoholic.
- 4:41If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only—
- 4:45so I have only circled, highlighted,
- 4:49underlined— a spiritual experience
- 4:52will conquer. So if I
- 4:56need to have a spiritual experience, you know, and it refers
- 5:00to this over on page 79 of the Big Book,
- 5:04it says, and this is in pages 76
- 5:09through 83. Those steps encompass
- 5:12steps 8 and 9, and they give you in complete detail
- 5:17every which way you should make amends, not any which way. And like,
- 5:20you know, because, you know, principle, you know, personalities come out when
- 5:24I'm talking to people in these rooms of why they shouldn't. But this book tells
- 5:28me every which way why I should. And here's the main
- 5:32reason, right? Because it said the only way to conquer this
- 5:36is with a spiritual experience. So on page 79,
- 5:40it says, reminding ourselves that
- 5:43we have decided to go to any lengths to find a
- 5:47spiritual experience, we ask that we be given the strength and the
- 5:51direction to do the right thing, no matter what the personal consequence may
- 5:55be. We may lose our position or reputation or face jail, but we are willing.
- 6:00We have to be. We must not shrink
- 6:04at anything. And must is a circled word because must is a— that's
- 6:08not a suggestion. And so we get into this place of,
- 6:11hey man, are you willing to do this and not live on the basis
- 6:15of these suggestions as well? Because if I want to just get a suggested
- 6:19thing and— because I've been suggesting myself to do things my whole life,
- 6:23but when I go and do follow these directions, Clear-cut directions.
- 6:28There's no gray. I mean, you can really come down and
- 6:31if you really want to argue, but which one do you want to be?
- 6:35Do you want to be in this or do you— I mean,
- 6:38I'm saying it to you, but do
- 6:42I want to be in this or do I want to continue living in my
- 6:46way of life? And my way of life didn't work. I found that
- 6:50out. But let me tweak it a little bit and let me see
- 6:54if I can do it this way now. No, I don't think that's how the
- 6:56way it works. It's like, do I abandon myself to God in this deal,
- 7:00or do I not? I kind of really— I liked,
- 7:03uh, in Matthew,
- 7:07I think it was Matthew 23, Matthew 5:23,
- 7:12it says, therefore, if you're offering your gift to the altar and
- 7:17there remember your brother has something against you,
- 7:22leave your gift in the front of the altar. First go and reconcile
- 7:25to your brother, then come to offer your gift. So God, I think what it's
- 7:28saying, it's like, you know, hey, If you're coming to God's
- 7:32altar— if I'm coming to the altar to God and I got something back home
- 7:36I got to go make right, before I go give this gift at the altar,
- 7:40go make it right. And the Big Book aligns
- 7:43to that point exactly on page 164.
- 7:49It says, God will constantly
- 7:53disclose more to you and to us. Ask him in your morning meditation what you
- 7:56can do each day for the man who is sick. The answers will come if
- 8:00your own house is in order. And it's not talking about a physical house,
- 8:04I don't believe. It's talking about the spiritual, my spiritual
- 8:08house with God. But obviously you cannot
- 8:12transmit something you haven't got. See to it that your relationship
- 8:16with him is right, and great events
- 8:20will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the great fact for
- 8:23us. So when I like, you know,
- 8:28is my house clean? You know, am I doing what
- 8:31God would want or am I still running off self-propulsion
- 8:36trying to arrange life to suit myself?
- 8:40And you know, man, sometimes I do. Sometimes I fall short. But like,
- 8:45you know, I've talked about this countless times, but you know, in meditations,
- 8:49you're following your breath. And you're following your breath and
- 8:53you're breathing in, you're breathing out, and you're
- 8:58just thinking about that breath coming back into one.
- 9:01And so you'll, I mean, for me at least, I'll go start thinking about my
- 9:05work or finances or
- 9:09anything in between or penguins. It doesn't matter.
- 9:14But the deal is, at least in some guided meditations,
- 9:18what I first started doing originally, It's like, hey,
- 9:21you know, it tells you if, hey, if you drift off, just come back to
- 9:25one. Well, that's what I'm doing
- 9:28with God, right? That's what I'm doing with these little prayers throughout my day that
- 9:32I will be doing. I'm just coming back to one with God.
- 9:36So I don't beat myself up too bad if I just get a little bit
- 9:40off track, because like, why would I? Because I'm just living in this human experience
- 9:44and this is what I'm supposed to be doing anyway.
- 9:48Living. Now I'm not hiding anymore.
- 9:51On, uh, in Matthew
- 9:55again, Matthew chapter 6,
- 10:00verse 33, it says, but seek first his kingdom
- 10:05and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
- 10:09Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will
- 10:12worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its
- 10:16own. I was thinking about that the other day, and I
- 10:21was thinking about, you know, this spiritual condition.
- 10:25And the spiritual condition they talk about is on page 85
- 10:29of the big book. But, you know,
- 10:33the one thing that it doesn't tell me ever in this book is, you know,
- 10:36we just don't have to drink for one day at a time. Because, man,
- 10:40like, I If
- 10:44I'm powerless from alcohol, how do I even have the ability to
- 10:47drink not for one day? I can't do that on my own accord,
- 10:51right? So it's not talking about that.
- 10:55It's talking about, on page 85, it says,
- 11:02it does not exist for us. And we're talking about the thought
- 11:06of drinking. It says, we are neither cocky nor we are afraid. That is
- 11:09our experience. That is how we react so long as
- 11:12we keep in fit spiritual condition.
- 11:16Fit spiritual condition. So I had to get fit first,
- 11:19right? So getting fit takes a
- 11:23good amount of time. I know people that work their whole life off and they
- 11:27never feel fit. But then you think about a pro football
- 11:30player and what his conditioning looks like to stay fit, to stay
- 11:34active, to stay you know, out there on the field, and it's a
- 11:38lot of work. And doing things like this is just a piece
- 11:41of it, right? You know, I mean, I think it— I think when it's— I
- 11:44don't think, I know what— for me, when it starts, it's on awakening.
- 11:49But it goes on to say on page 85, it says, you know, we had
- 11:52to— it is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action
- 11:56and rest on our laurels. Laurels is past achievements,
- 11:59what I did yesterday. What I did last year,
- 12:03what I did the year before that? Am I resting on this
- 12:07old 4-step? Am I resting on all my old amends, or do I got
- 12:11some things I need to go make right today? And there is,
- 12:14man. I think the most important amends to make is the
- 12:18next one because that's all there is.
- 12:22And so that's where I was thinking about this one
- 12:26thing at a time thing because that's all I can do is let me clean
- 12:30up the street. One thing at a time, one day at a time. Let me
- 12:34go make amends to somebody. And man, like, I was thinking about this
- 12:38the other day, you know, we're gonna be talking about 8 and 9 for 2
- 12:40months. And what a cool thing. Like, you know, I got
- 12:43to confront a neighbor of mine yesterday
- 12:46and, you know, clear up some things with her. And because
- 12:51that's what I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to show this,
- 12:54that God, I'm supposed to be a demonstration to God. For God,
- 12:59to live out there in the world amongst people and be
- 13:03a human just like them. And like,
- 13:06you know, so I don't— and I see other people, you know, they— there's
- 13:10this thing that, you know, my head at least blocks
- 13:14me sometime with my ego. I'm like, well, all these other people, they don't do
- 13:18that and they're okay. Well, I'm not. I didn't live like most people.
- 13:22Um, I didn't Most people don't go out and hurt
- 13:26people, and they don't go out and ruin families, and they don't go out and
- 13:30hurt their kids and do countless things, right?
- 13:34But I did. And it speaks to that effect
- 13:38on page 30 in the Big Book. It says, the delusion that we were like
- 13:41other people, or presently maybe, that means right now, has to be smashed.
- 13:46Presently maybe has to be smashed. And man, that's the dangerous
- 13:50place I've ever been in. Thinking that I was like other people.
- 13:56I, um, I can't live like that. I can't,
- 14:00I can't forget that I have to live in a way that's
- 14:04structured, for me at least. Some people don't have to,
- 14:08but, you know, I got to wake up first thing in the morning and bring
- 14:10God into my day. Throughout my day,
- 14:13little prayers. My thoughts— I,
- 14:16I like my thoughts today to be on other people because I like to be
- 14:20of, you know, service and love to those people.
- 14:24It says in the practical on here, it says, today I'll
- 14:28be honest about my past without becoming trapped by it. You know, can I
- 14:32walk down the aisles of Kroger and not worry about who's on the next aisle?
- 14:36Can I walk out of my house and look around my neighborhood and
- 14:40be okay? There was a time I didn't even want to come out of my
- 14:44house during the daytime because I didn't want to face the music of my
- 14:48neighbors, just look at them. And like, you know, it's not even like they're going
- 14:51to say anything, but it's just this look. And I had
- 14:55more intention of that look being bad than they probably did, because they were probably
- 14:57coming from a loving position, more loving position than I'll ever come from.
- 15:03Then it goes on to say in here, if I cannot change what I have
- 15:06done, and I cannot, but this book tells
- 15:10me what my job is to do.
- 15:14And I was talking to somebody about this the other day,
- 15:17and I was like, man, like, you know, I feel like,
- 15:21and we spent 2 months talking about it, but there's
- 15:25always been in these recovery rooms too much talk on these defects
- 15:30and shortcomings because I'm not trying to be
- 15:34this person that Corey thinks he needs to be. I'm trying to be a person
- 15:37that God wants me to be. And I don't know what that looks like.
- 15:40And God uses me in so many different ways.
- 15:44But on page 124, In the Big Book,
- 15:47it says, we grow by our willingness to face and
- 15:51rectify errors and convert them into assets.
- 15:56I'm going to read that again. We grow by our willingness to face
- 16:00and rectify errors and convert them into assets.
- 16:05My greatest defect, one of my greatest defects today,
- 16:10was drinking and doing absurd and obnoxious things when
- 16:14I drank, and I could not stop, and I kept on hurting my family
- 16:18and kept on being a disappointment to everybody around me. I could never
- 16:22live up to this person that I thought I wanted to be, or I thought
- 16:26you wanted me to be. But the cool thing today
- 16:29is I get to live up to what God wants me to be and to
- 16:32rectify my errors and convert them into assets and be of use to God and
- 16:36to be of use to you. And what a cool thing
- 16:40this is, to be able to do this and talk
- 16:43about these different concepts and this stuff. It means so much to me.
- 16:47And man, I'm going to end this with a
- 16:50prayer, and thank you guys for listening today on this Saturday.
- 16:54Prayer: Father God, give me the honesty to face the harm I've caused and willingness
- 16:58to make things right. Through your Holy Spirit, replace guilt with courage
- 17:02and avoidance with action. Shape my life through the example of Jesus
- 17:06and lead me toward healing and peace.
